We had a chance to hear from Brandon Owen, John Pham, and Adam Schulhof as they sat down for a group interview at the Orthopreneurs Summit back in October. You've heard their names and you know their products, but do you really know the stories behind KLOwen, Inbrace, and Grin?

This shouldn't be the case with proper retirement planning.

You’re probably spending a lot of money on marketing. Every case that walks through your door costs you something. We want them to get them to say yes to our treatment plans to drive up our case acceptance rate.

The number 1 thing you can do as a doctor to help your treatment coordinator get better case acceptance is by getting out of the room quicker.

You heard that right… as a doctor, you are not that important in the treatment case acceptance process. It doesn’t matter how good of a salesman you think you are.

Gone are the days, Orthos spent 45 minutes drawing treatment plans with their patients. The best way you can help your TC close better is by spending as little time in the room as possible.

5 minutes to get the patient to meet you and understand a few details on their treatment plan is enough. The rest is better handled by your TC.

In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Sophie Acker. She is the VP of Global Product Management and Business Intelligence at DentalMonitoring.

Sophie is originally from France before she moved to Holland to work for DentalMonitoring. She is a trained clinician who worked as a pediatric dentist before going back to business school and never went back to practicing.

DentalMonitoring offers innovative solutions to orthodontists and dentists to assist with remote check-ups. We recently started using them here at our practice to increase efficiency.

However, one concern I’ve heard from some people in the orthodontic world is that DentalMonitoring technology threatens our profession. 

But Sophie clarifies this concern by assuring us that their systems and products are made with orthodontists in mind. DentalMonitoring gives doctors the flexibility to apply their own protocols within the system.

22 Mar 2022Closing Anterior Open Bites Predictably w/ Dr. Nicole Scheffler00:39:31

In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Nicole Scheffler. She is one of the amazing speakers lined up for the Orthopreneur Summit in September.

Dr. Nicole Scheffler received her dental and orthodontic training from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. She practices full-time in Boone, North Carolina.  

She lectures a lot on closing anterior open bites all over the country and the world.

Back in the year 2000, when nobody was doing TADS in the US, Dr. Nicole went to Belgium to learn how they were placing TADS and how the patient experience was. She came back and approached ORMCO, and that’s how VectorTAS came about.

Nicole recommends closing open bites with TADS in conjunction with an open bite splint to intrude the posterior because it’s just as stable as jaw surgery.

We also talk about creating a vibrant office culture where staff want to come to work. This is important as we all know getting and keeping dental assistants who are the right fit is key to the success of your practice.

In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Ann Marie Gorczyca from Antioch, California. She is a practicing orthodontist of 32 years. In addition, she has authored 4 books on dental practice management. These are the books she wished she had early on in her career.

But what nobody really talks about is what scalability actually means. Understanding what we need to do for our practices to get them bigger and more effective is key.

Now, there are two types of scalability:

  • Scaling up
  • Scaling out

In this episode, I take you through the process of scaling and what it entails by using practical examples of what we have done in our practice and when you should consider doing them.

The question for you today is, where are you right now in your practice, in terms of scaling up or scaling out, relative to where you want to be?

In this episode, I am joined by one of the POWERHOUSES of the orthodontic practice, Dr. Bob Skopek.

He has practiced orthodontics for over 20 years in North Barrington, Illinois. His practice focuses on customer experience, exceptional clinical care, and business efficiency.

Talking of efficiency, he transitioned from a practice of 15 team members and 11 chairs to 3 team members and 3 chairs.

And guess what happened to his revenue after the transition….. it DOUBLED.

This is HUGE from an efficiency perspective, but how did he achieve this.

He credits a few things:

✅Learning to move teeth with plastic – (he is a top 1% Invisalign provider)

✅Remote monitoring through DentalMonitoring App

One of the greatest life lessons that changed how I look at life came from one of my patients. 

He was a bona fide lead singer in a lead band who came to his appointments in a crushed purple velvet suit with his gorgeous girlfriend in tow. 

He looked very dapper in his cool suit and exuded swag. 

The suit got me thinking….

As much as I loved it and would have liked to wear it, did it fit my personality?  

This is the lesson I’m sharing with you today in this 5-Minute Friday episode.

We have a young orthodontist who has grown her practice to 7 figures in one year using TikTok.

As Dr. Ashley Kisling puts it, TikTok is not all about singing and dancing.

Today on the Orthopreneurs show, we have one of the most inspirational and positive Orthodontists ever.

We have Dr. Jeff Heinz of Heinz Orthodontists Rockford and Grand Rapids, Michigan.

He is well known in the Ortho community for his positivity and for being a great human being. Today, we get to know him better.

Dr. Heinz went to the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry for his undergraduate studies.

In his second year in dental school, he was involved in a motocross accident that left him paralyzed. This was a devastating accident that could have made him give up on his dreams, but he was very determined to rebuild his life.

He caught up with his classmates and got extra motivation to work hard to finish top of his class. He practiced General Dentistry for a while before going for residency at Indiana University.

Jeff's story of overcoming tragedy to live a fulfilling and successful life is so incredible and a true testament to his resilience.

Today on the OrthoPreneurs Show, I have the pleasure of interviewing the amazing Dr. Jacob Koch.

He practices in Atlanta, Georgia, and also lives there with his family.

Dr. Koch is a fitness enthusiast and competes in fitness competitions. He is so ripped he looks like the Terminator.

Having been an overweight kid all through his childhood, he shares some cool fitness tips he has picked along the way, from losing excess weight to competing in fitness competitions. One secret he shares is how to find time to work out from a busy schedule.

19 Jul 2022Balancing Practice, Learning, and Motherhood w/ Dr. Shira Tor00:37:21

Right from a young age, Dr. Shira Tor knew she wanted to become an orthodontist. She had this big diastema, which really messed up her self-confidence. She would laugh with her hand covering her mouth.

But as soon as her mom took her to an orthodontist who fixed her smile, her self-confidence grew, and right there, she knew this was her calling.  

She promised her orthodontist, Dr. Ira Weiss, that she would one day become an orthodontist like him to help other kids.

And not only did Dr. Shira work hard and become an orthodontist, but she also became an associate at Dr. Weiss' practice and later transitioned to a partner and is now in the process of becoming the senior partner.

Dr. Shira completed her Doctorate of Dental Medicine Degree at Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health and her orthodontic residency at Einstein Hospital in Philadelphia.

She attributes her success in the ortho field to her willingness to learn new things by taking lots of CE courses and being part of several study groups.

In addition to her Ortho journey, we talk about balancing the demands of growing a practice and motherhood. Dr. Shira shares some unique perspectives on this issue, including how to overcome the 'mom guilt' that some mothers might feel.

Dr. Chris Bonebreak Jackson grew up in an orthodontic family. Her father was the town orthodontist in Clarksville, Maryland. She'd spend a lot of time in the practice helping out with her twin brother, who went to dental school and became an orthodontist straight away.  

She went to MIT to study Mechanical Engineering and found her way to Wall Street to work as a high-yield bond trader with Goldman Sachs.

The thrill and buzz of Wall Street didn't last long, after 5 years, she longed for something different. She missed working with her hands and helping people in a tangible way.

Around this time, she attended an Ortho convention with her family in Boston, only to be inspired by all the Ortho tech on display.

She decided to take a new career path and went to Harvard Dental School and UNC Chapel Hill for her Ortho residency.

She practiced Ortho for a while and is now headed to Massachusetts to work as the Director of Clinical Affairs at LightForce.

Hers is an amazing story where everything she has done, from mechanical engineering, to finance to practicing Ortho, has aligned perfectly to bring her to her present position.

Dr. Susan Podray is not only a good orthodontist but also a dyed-in-the-wool entrepreneur. She has a 6-location practice in Georgia besides investing in commercial real estate and also running a side business with her kids.

Just like my own journey, she didn't become an orthodontist straight away. She first practiced as a general dentist briefly, then went back to school to become an orthodontist just like her father. Her brother is also an orthodontist. (The apple doesn't fall far from the tree)

As you'll be hearing in this episode, Dr. Susan and I have even more things in common. We are both partners at Smile Doctors. We discuss how our practices have become more efficient after joining the OSO. She has even gone ahead and opened a new practice while partnered with Smile Doctors.

There's something empowering about facing something tough and refusing to go down without a fight. Doing everything in your power to make sure you win the storm.

Make no mistake, you are going to go through many storms in your life and in your career.

Sometimes, things will go terribly wrong in your practice. Maybe a client complains, no one accepts treatment, a great team member leaves, etc. These things will happen, and you know what, you'll ride the storm and come out fine.

On the other hand, sometimes things go along very well, those great days when everything goes beautifully. But don't make the mistake of thinking that this will always be the case.

We all have these ups and downs, positives and negatives, all the time. The key is to learn how to embrace the storm and help those around you survive it with you.

Having a VA is one of those things you don’t know you need until you get one and realize what you’ve been missing.

Most of us in Ortho are great achievers. I meet all of you out there, and I'm so impressed and sometimes feel like I'm the dumbest person in the room. 

You were likely among the top students all through your classes, and that got you into this wonderful career.

In addition, many orthodontists speak multiple languages, play multiple instruments, practice martial arts, and many other things are going on. 

No doubt that you are an achiever.

Because of being an achiever, sometimes we fall into the trap of wanting things too quickly. We want a million dollar-practice in 6 months or an amazing culture in a month, or a full schedule of new patients next week. 

But I'm here to tell you that success in Ortho or in anything worth having is not glamorous. It's not fast. But I will guarantee you that if you put your work in, amazing things will happen.

We want to surround ourselves with the right people who will make us happy and bring out the best in us. Remember, you become the average of the people you spend time with.

We should seek more Tiggers in our lives and limit our time with Eeyores.

If you're working pretty hard, that's a good thing. But I want to give you some advice today. I want you to focus on working harder on yourself than on your job.

Now, what does that mean?

Everybody wants to go to work and tell others what to do, not necessarily working on themselves.

The biggest changes you can make in your life come from working on yourself and not trying to correct others.

It's easy to point the finger at somebody and say they did something wrong.

But I want you to look back at yourself and say, as a leader, as a manager, as somebody who's guiding a team, what could you have done differently in terms of training, onboarding, hiring, leadership, management, that could have prevented that problem from happening?

I'm not a fan of rhymes, alliteration, or silly little sayings, but I heard this quote a while ago, and it really resonated with me.

I started thinking about a number of things that have happened to me, my partner, and our practice in the last year or two. (We’re all aware that life has changed dramatically in many aspects - from employment, technology, and inflation to global issues if you will.) 

Almost all of us have been facing huge challenges in business and life in general. And no matter how easy or difficult the times we’re living in are, we always have two choices.

We can complain, moan, and whine about how unfair and wrong the things happening to us are. Or we can be at peace with the things we can’t change and focus on those we can.

As most of you probably know, before I went back to school to become an orthodontist, I practiced as a dentist for many years.

The truth is that I was exposed to dentistry when I was just 4 years old in my dad's office – the original Dr. Krieger.

My father, Dr. Allan Krieger, is today's guest.

He has been an inspiration to me my entire life. He has guided me in many ways, allowing me to achieve what I have today. I wouldn't be here in my professional life were it not for him. He taught me much of what I know (and practice) to this day.

Most of you must have heard about private equity in our industry with the OSO/DSO model. But today, you'll get to hear about venture capital in dentistry and what it's all about.

I am joined by Dr. Jeremy Krell, the co-founder and managing partner at Revere Partners.

He is a general dentist by clinical training with multiple practices in New Jersey, where he is a silent partner but no longer does clinical work.

His strength is in business. He is a dyed-in-the-wool entrepreneur with multiple successful businesses he started and grew to multimillion-dollar buyouts.

He is here to talk about the only independent venture capital fund in the oral health industry.

In a nutshell, Revere Partners identify opportunities for their investors and provides capital to startups in the oral health space. 

The capital and guidance help these startups in their early growth stages before they reach a point where they can be acquired. This, in turn, creates a lot of wealth for the investors.

Being a doctor who understands the dentistry industry, Jeremy says that Revere Partners was created by doctors for doctors. The model is much simpler than other VCs to help dentists, orthodontists, and other people in this space who are looking for investment opportunities.

The long and short of it was that someone organizing an event had received a nasty email full of colorful language from one of the would-be attendees.

They proceeded to take a screenshot of the email without the full context and posted it on their social media. They included the person's email, place of work, and other such detail.

This got me thinking…

Nobody is perfect. People are going to screw up, even those close to you.

Today I want to recount one of the words of my favorite mentors, one I wish I had met. His name is Jim Rohn, and most of you probably have heard of him. He is one of the greatest motivational speakers of all time.

During one of his profound talks back in 1981, he recognized that things happen at known intervals in life, just like in nature.

As we know, with the four seasons, fall is followed by winter, and spring is followed by summer. Additionally, we all know dark is followed by light.

What does all this mean?

Every one of us will experience winter, whether financially, personally, or professionally; we're going to face winter, but winter doesn't last forever. It will soon be spring and summer.

In our current context, many people are worried about the looming recession, but just like it has always happened, the recession will soon be over, and a period of prosperity will follow.

If you ask many orthodontists, HR is one of the more challenging aspects of running a practice. The pandemic-induced staff shortages didn't help matters either.

As a matter of fact, the shortage of good team members poses a true existential crisis to the survival of orthodontics long term, or at least the way we know it.

Finding and retaining good team members is even more important, as well as maintaining a conducive workplace.

But keeping up with the ever-changing HR landscape, State laws, and the constant threat of a lawsuit from a disgruntled former employee is not easy.

In this episode, I am joined by Alan Twigg of Bent Ericksen & Associates, who provide an array of HR and employment compliance products, services, and materials to help any employer achieve a fully functioning and compliant HR department.

We discuss a wide array of HR issues that can arise in an orthodontic practice or any other workplace and how best to protect yourself as an employer.
