26 Nov 2019 | The Business Side of Entrepreneurship, Knowing Your Why & Knowing When to Start Your Business Aaron Eggert | 00:44:23
This Minnesota professional has a history of turning small business into big business and connecting the brains of the Twin Cities community. With roles in several businesses as both an advisor and investor, co-founding a non-profit called Minneapolis HOPE, and proof of his incredible ability to grow an organization – it isn’t hard to believe that he has a knack for initiating and maintaining great relationships and great business. Aaron made his first major break-through at an office products distributor when he broke the first three years sales record that had been in place longer than he had been alive. Then, at age 29 he became Vice President of Sales leading the company into more profit and took a mediocre office furnishings division from bland to booming in 2 short years. That’s when he was noticed and recruited to join iSpace Environments, which at the time was a medium sized office furnishings business. In 5 years, Aaron led the company to 270% growth through brand awareness, strategic planning, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. He believes that his success is about being genuine in his desire to understand his client’s business with the passion to connect and to be a resource to others. The beginning of this journey began in the summer of 2017. Our Founder, Aaron Eggert had just turned forty years old and found himself in a bit of a predicament. As a partner in a successful office furnishings and technology firm that had grown exponentially over the past few years, he should have been on top of the world. However, it was quite the contrary. It's not like he was going through a mid-life crisis or anything, he was just missing something. So, Aaron took some time off to reflect and get to the root of what was causing this void. During his reflection it became abundantly clear how fortunate he was. He has lived a life filled with success and fantastic experiences, his wife is a complete rock star independent business owner, and they own a hobby farm with a chocolate lab (Una) along with five chickens. What's not to love about that? Then it hit him. Aaron found himself asking "What am I doing to create purpose and solidify my legacy?" That's when BACKforty was born. It was Aaron's fortieth year of existence that he decided to share his business successes as a service to others. Then to pay homage to his rural ties, the term "back forty" is defined as an area of land that is uncultivated or undeveloped. Every person and business has a "back forty", an unrecognized and uncultivated opportunity for development. www.instagram.com/eggert.aaron and www.instagram.com/backfortymn Jenna Redfield is a digital content expert, focused on organizing, planning and creating content for marketing purposes. 09 Jun 2020 | Criticism vs feedback-What’s the right way to effectively call out someone’s behavior & how to react when you make missteps | 00:47:12
This episode's topic is one that I felt wasn't being talked about in the midst of all the discussions this week. It was the idea of how to have conversations with people online about the issue of race, specifically on Instagram, how we are talking in the comments & how we are calling people out. Learning to accept criticism & feedback for the things we've done and how to react to those who call us out & to make changes. I specifically talk about some examples that have happened this week, what to do & what not to do. How to be able to discuss what's happening in a respectful manner online without bullying and how to learn and be able to look at yourself and make changes in what you know. 24 Nov 2020 | Growing through TikTok, adjusting to MN Culture, Being your real self online & Cancel Culture with KDWB Radio Host @ewhiteonthemic | 00:54:55
E. White is kind of what happens when a bro and a hipster have a baby: super energetic, very loud, but always down to go off the beaten path! Born and raised in Philadelphia, E. was brought up to have pride for his city, and is excited to embrace the Twin Cities with that same love. He always tries to be the plug for all things local, whether it’s a neighborhood coffee shop opening up, or a cool underground art show downtown. If he’s not doing that on air or on social media, he’s probably hoping to make you laugh! Outside the studio, E. is a huge craft beer nerd that loves exploring every taproom possible. He tries to road trip at least once a month, and loves documenting his stops along the way. He also keeps really involved with the arts as an avid photographer, videographer, and musician, and often performs his raps on his Instagram! He’s also excited to dive into the comedy scene in the Twin Cities, as he’s always looking for open mics to hit up. He also brings that same energy to his content on his constantly growing TikTok page! Not to mention, he’s always talking about hockey there too, as he is obsessed with the sport. Simply put, he definitely “rides his own wave” and tries to stay positive and happy along the way. www.Instagram.com/ewhiteonthemic www.twitter.com/ewhiteonthemic www.facebook.com/ewhiteonthemic https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMJH1y1ux/ Jenna Redfield is a digital content expert, focused on organizing, planning and creating content for marketing purposes. 24 Apr 2017 | 15 Mistakes You May Be Making on Instagram with host Jenna Redfield | 00:29:19
Sharing 15 tips about how to grow and how to avoid mistakes when designing your instagram.Mistake 1. Using botsI hate bots. Hate them. Yes they can help bring you followers, but most of the time the followers are empty and non-engaging. Pro tip: The best way to bring organic followers is to actually interact! Mistake 2. Not putting your location on your accountIf you are a local based business or honestly any business, make sure to put your location on your instagram. I run a local based business and I easily follow people who show that they are in the same location as me. If you don't list your city, you could be losing followers, even if you sell beyond your local market. Pro Tip: Make sure to have a business account and add your city in the settings, this way it doesn't take up space in your description Mistake 3. Not listing a website/linkAnother thing I see many times is that people put no link to their business or facebook page and have nothing there. If you have a blog or anything, make sure to put Pro Tip: Use www.linktr.ee as your link. You can add a bunch of calls to action in one link! Mistake 4. Following more people than follow youThis is something I've heard from many people. Always follow less people than follow you. This comes off as more reputable and shows that you aren't desperate for followers. Pro Tip: What I do is make a separate private account for the beauty bloggers, fashion bloggers and celebrities I want to follow but won't add to my following list. This way I'm only following people in my industry and can actually keep up. Mistake 5. Not having a consistent looking feedInstagram can be your portfolio and first impression of your business. If it's full of family pics, shot in low light on an iPhone, you may be losing customers. By using the same consistent filters, and if you have graphics, using the same colors and fonts, you appear much more professional. Mistake 6. Not using instagram storiesBecause of instagram's algorithms changing, having an instagram story is so important because you are put on the top of everyone's feed and they won't miss your post/content. So double up! Pro tip: Create a iphone sized graphic in canva.com! I'll hopefully be posting a tutorial soon! Mistake 7. Not using HashtagsAlthough there have been many posts recently about shadow bans (google it!) I still believe hashtags are an amazing way to find other instagram accounts as well as for accounts to follow you! Mistake 8. Not engaging with others or replying to commentsIf all you do on instagram is post pictures, you are really missing out! Instagram is a community and you need to treat it as such. Take some time, even if it's 5 minutes, each day, comment on posts, like pictures and respond to your commenters! Mistake 9. Not refollowing/engaging with accounts you want to follow you backOne thing I've found that isn't super spammy and although it takes some time actually works, is getting the app Followers and tracking who isn't following you back. Every month I scroll to the bottom of the list and unfollow and refollow a few people. Then I comment on those peoples post. This helps people know about me and they may have missed me following the first time. I wouldn't do this more than 2x so only do it for accounts you want to get the notice of. Mistake 10. Not being consistentPosting at least once a day is very important if you want to build a following. If you only post weekly, you are way less likely to build an audience quickly. Pro tip: plan out your feed with a planning app, like plann or later. Mistake 11. Not posting at the right timeTiming on instagram is super important. I usually post between 7am-9am or after 7pm. These are when the most people are online. Pro tip: check your instagram analytics to see when the most people are online! Mistake 12. Only using graphicsI usually don't follow accounts that only use graphics. It tends to look messy and none of them look alike. I prefer accounts that have photos and use clean graphics occasionally. Mistake 13. Not coming up with original contentUnless your account is strictly a curated account (mine is for the Twin Cities Collective, a community group) you need to put out original images if you want to grow your account. I have never featured an image that isn't mine Mistake 14. Not having pretty picturesInstagram is truly a visual site. If your pictures are less than desirable, you may stall in terms of followers. One easy way to have pretty pictures is by using stock photos. Check out my stock shop for inexpensive photos you can use to make your instagram page look super professional! You can also create custom stock photos with my easy to use order form! Mistake 15. Not selling your products/servicesOne recent thing I've realized is that many of my followers don't realize what I actually do! Don't be afraid to promote your services but don't have every single post be self-promo. Mix it up! For every 3 posts, 1 should promote something, even if it's another social media account Jenna Redfield is a digital content expert, focused on organizing, planning and creating content for marketing purposes. 05 Sep 2017 | Writing & Editing remotely for the Huffington Post with Jordan Turgeon | 00:46:42
Today I interviewed Jordan Turgeon, Senior Contributor Editor at HuffPost & Content Editor at Still Kickin. We talk about many things, including our new space at www.studiocowork.com Follow Jordan at www.instagram.com/jturg
Hello, Twin Cities Collective! My name is Jordan Turgeon. I’m a senior contributors editor at HuffPost and editorial director for Still Kickin. This month’s theme is content and writing. I wasn’t able to get too specific in the podcast about the ins and outs/behind the scenes at HuffPost but wanted to flesh out some of the topics we did discuss (and add some I forgot to mention). Content creation is an expansive topic, and I won’t pretend to be an expert on all of it -- I’m always learning! But in my time at HuffPost and Still Kickin, I’ve learned a few things that could be helpful to others. (And naturally, I put them in listicle form. Because the listicle doesn’t appear to be going anywhere anytime fast.) ---
There is so much pressure these days for content creators to be experts at everything. It’s as if we need to be one-man or one-woman bands in order to succeed in this competitive industry. My opinion? This mindset can be pretty toxic. Trying to be everything to everyone will affect your confidence (and could potentially confuse your audience). Instead of trying to conquer it all, pick one or two key areas you have a voice in or experience with and focus on those topics. Maybe you’re a self-taught videographer. Maybe you’re a DIY-er. Maybe you’re a stay-at-home parent with a side hustle. Maybe you take gorgeous photos of rocks. Whatever you’re an “expert” in (and I use the word “expert” loosely, because it carries a connotation of perfection but simply means you can speak to a particular topic), work with that. Create content around that topic. Don’t worry about the rest. Because if you try to focus on too many different areas, you’re going to spread yourself too thin. You may even come off as disingenuous. Niches can be your friend. Find yours! 2. Produce regular content (but not too regular). There seems to be a magic formula when it comes to post frequency. You want to engage with your audience... but not bombard them. You want to sell your products and services… but not annoy people in the process. Confession: I don’t really know what that magic formula is. Does anyone? Here’s what I do know: Since taking over Still Kickin’s social media accounts a year ago, I’ve spent time observing how people interact with our content. We’re a non-profit organization, so a loss of followers could potentially translate into fewer donations and sales. Not good. I started by looking at my personal social media feeds. Was I ever annoyed by how frequently a person/company was posting? If so, what about it bothered me? Sometimes, it was because the message or images were repetitive -- if I’ve seen one, I’ve seen ‘em all. Sometimes, it was because they were aggressively soliciting my business -- almost as if they wouldn’t take no for an answer. I try to apply these lessons to Still Kickin’s posts as best I can. Emphasis on “try.” I’m always learning! Think about your own social media feeds. Have you ever unfollowed someone? If so, why did you? Don’t commit those same social media “sins.” Put yourself in your audience’s shoes. 3. Don’t worry so much about what others are creating (but do get inspired by their creations). We all know or follow someone who seems to be 100 percent totally killing the content creation game. Maybe their small business is a financial success. Maybe they’ve been able to turn their side hustle into their primary source of income. Maybe they’ve gotten to work with a dream client. The two best things you can do for yourself (and your sanity) is 1., not compare yourself to these people, and 2., support the heck out of them. I have some incredible, badass journalist colleagues at HuffPost. They’ve gotten book deals. Their articles go viral on the regular. They are stellar writers. They inspire the heck out of me. But I try to not let myself fall down that comparison rabbit hole. My career will never be like theirs, because we are not the same people. Our achievements can’t be the same, because we have different goals. I’m only compromising my own success when I compare myself to them. People get jealous. We’re human. Once it passes, learn what you can from your peers. We all accomplish more when we lift each other up. 4. Community matters. Content is key. But so is community. If people are posting about you/your company on social media, acknowledge that! Re-share that content on your own platforms (while crediting the original source, of course). It shows you have reach and, in my opinion, is one of the best testimonials you can earn. Some of Still Kickin’s most well-received content wasn’t even created or produced by us. It was first posted by other people. People who like our mission and our products enough to share with others.
5. Rejection sucks. No way around it. Something I didn’t mention in the podcast: I’m also a fiction writer. An unpublished fiction writer. I’ve written (and shelved) a handful of manuscripts the past several years -- which means I’ve also received hundreds of rejection emails. And in my job at HuffPost, I can’t accept every submission I receive. So I’ve been on both sides of things: I’ve felt the sting of rejection, and I’ve had to deliver it. You’re going to get rejected. You probably already have at least once. And it’s the worst. The best advice I can give? Let yourself wallow. Let yourself feel devastated. Only then can you pick yourself up and send out that next pitch. 6. Get yourself (at least one) critique partner for your writing. The best way to hone your writing skills is to have other writers tear it apart (gently and constructively, of course). My journalism school professors taught me a lot, but I would argue I’ve learned just as much from having other writers review my work. It can be incredibly scary to hand over your writing to someone else for criticism, but that’s when you grow. Of course, you’re probably not going to have a critique partner review every single Tumblr post or Instagram caption you craft, but for the larger, more extensive pieces? It can be a gamechanger. --- That’s all I have for now! If you have additional questions, feel free to reach out! Since 2017 is already almost gone, I share a little about 2018. Local Questions: Favorite Local Restaurant or Coffee Shop? Phenomenal question! I'm a huge Mexican food love so I would say my favorite go to mexican is by far Boca Chica & Burrito Mercado which are both in St.Paul. They are my favorite little hot spots for authentic mexican! As for coffee, I love all the coffee! The One on One bike shop in Minneapolis has the best Americanos I've ever tasted and the barista, Carna is such a sweetheart! And the coffee shop I love with the best atmosphere would be Nina's in St.Paul. What do you want to share with our community? Have the courage to fail each and every day!
