27 Jul 2022 | David Copperfield (1935) | 01:33:42
We're back, Old Soul family! And we are covering an audience recommendation of a classic novel adaptation: David Copperfield! One of Charles Dickens's own favorite characters, the story of young David is a coming-of-age tale with lovable (and hate-able) characters that influence his life in becoming an aspiring author. This movie came to be out of producer David O. Selznick's love and devotion to his own father...and much to the opposition of his father-in-law (who was head of the studio)! We loved giving our first impressions on a story that has been on many people's bookshelves for over a century! 09 Feb 2025 | The New Hollywood | 01:16:26
We are joined by Vincent Casaregola, Ph.D. of St. Louis University to discuss one of the most groundbreaking movements in cinematic history: The New Hollywood. We've all heard of Old Hollywood, but what is THIS time period about? In the mid 1960s through early 1980s, a new generation of filmmakers emerged, challenging the old studio system and pushing the boundaries of cinematic storytelling. This era captured great creativity and innovation, producing some of the most iconic and influential films ever made. Between new business models, auteur directors, and parameters of freedom, moviegoers were able to experience a different kind of storytelling that hadn't quite been seen like this before. Dr. Casaregola walks us through the landscape of movies and competing television programming, changes in the business world and social movements, key figures making their way to the silver screen, prominent content of these films, and SO MUCH MORE! Tune in to understand the legacy of this historical period. *Hi everyone! So, Emma had a tiny tech hiccup during recording (her mic decided to play hide-and-seek with the connection, the little rascal!). This means the sound quality might be a tad bit different than usual. We've done our best to clean it up, but please forgive any less-than-perfect moments. We promise the content is still worth a listen, and we're sending you all extra virtual hugs for your understanding!
