03 Mar 2022The Official Do Good Better Podcast Season Five Ep12: Fix It Forward Ministry's Matthew Carlson & Jeremy Jensen00:17:09

Today Patrick is joined by Matthew Carlson & Jeremy Jensen and their unique nonprofit story.

Fix It Forward Ministry's goal is to remove the transportation barrier for needy members of our community, thus helping enable them to be independent and self-sufficient. This is accomplished in two ways. First, by providing free car repairs to needy individuals--to help keep their vehicles on the road and safe. Second, by repairing donated vehicles and giving them to needy members in our community who do not have a vehicle or whose vehicle is beyond repair. They utilize volunteer labor, discounted parts, and charitable donations to cover the costs of repairs.

All work is performed at Fix It Forward Auto Care after business hours and on weekends. The same faces you see everyday at Fix It Forward Auto Care are the same faces that run the Ministry. Some serve on the Board Of Directors while others provide leadership, guidance and technical assistance to the teams of volunteers.

17 Mar 2022The Official Do Good Better Podcast Season Five Ep17: Matthew's Voice Project Co-Founders Jenny Schuster & Michelle Warren00:18:34

Today Patrick welcomes Jenny Schuster & Michelle Warren, Co-Founders of Matthew's Voice Project.

Matthew’s Voice Project (MVP) is a registered non-profit 501c3 that focuses its efforts on assisting students in our public schools who are identified as experiencing homelessness. Much of MVP’s focus is on unaccompanied youth (identified by the school system as living on their own with very little to no support), providing them with the support and encouragement they need to complete high school and graduate.

As of December 2021 area district liaisons had approximately 438 homeless students combined in our local area; families and unaccompanied youth living in shelters, cars, hotels, campgrounds, garages or doubled up with family and friends.

While our public school systems receive federal grants to administer to the needs of homeless students, their day-to-day needs are not met through this program. This is where MVP steps in to help.

14 Apr 2022The Official Do Good Better Podcast Season Six Ep5 Box of Balloons Director Katie Dukart00:17:25

Fargo Director Katie Dukart joins Patrick to share the unique mission of Box of Balloons.

Box of Balloons is a non-profit organization on a mission to make each birthday happy and every child celebrated. Every child deserves to feel special, be celebrated and have a memorable party.  Unfortunately that is not possible for many families. In America 18% of children live below the poverty level.  They believe that a birthday celebration can give families the joy and hope they may be missing.

Their focus is to ensure each child feels special and celebrated on their birthday.  A child's birthday should be happy despite a family's current situation, living conditions, or financial status.

Their fundamental goal is to provide joy, hope and celebration for the child and their family.

26 Apr 2022The Official Do Good Better Podcast Season Six Ep9: Workforce Development Expert & Author Kate Markin Coleman00:36:02

In 2022, Workforce Development is more important than ever. Kate Markin Coleman joins Patrick to tell us all why and where nonprofits go from here.

Kate Markin Coleman has spent decades leading organizational and large-scale change in the private and social sectors. She began her career in business, transitioning to the social sector when she and her colleagues sold the fintech company they led. It was an opportunity to marry two mindsets. As EVP and chief strategist for the national YMCA movement, Kate established herself as an expert in pacing and sequencing change and using networks and stakeholder engagement to scale impact.

Kate’s years in the nonprofit world gave her an abiding belief in its power to do good. She also observed the many ways in which the sector underperforms its potential. First, as a leadership fellow at Harvard University and now in her board and advisory engagements, Kate advocates for the adoption of practices that enhance outcomes. She focuses on process/program improvement, cross-sector collaboration, analytics, and building equity into workforce development. She has written two books on these practices with her spouse Stephen Goldsmith. They are still married.

17 May 2022The Official Do Good Better Podcast Season Six Ep18 Best-Selling Authors Brian Moran and Michael Lennington Discuss "The 12 Week Year"00:42:13

Today Patrick welcomes Brian Moran and Michael Lennington, authors of the New York Times Bestseller, The 12 Week Year, the guide to shortening your execution cycle down from one year to twelve weeks.

Most organizations and individuals work in the context of annual goals and plans; a twelve-month execution cycle. Instead, The 12 Week Year avoids the pitfalls and low productivity of annualized thinking. This book redefines your "year" to be 12 weeks long. In 12 weeks, there just isn't enough time to get complacent, and urgency increases and intensifies. The 12 Week Year creates focus and clarity on what matters most and a sense of urgency to do it now. In the end more of the important stuff gets done and the impact on results is profound.

  • Explains how to leverage the power of a 12 week year to drive improved results in any area of your life
  • Offers a how-to book for both individuals and organizations seeking to improve their execution effectiveness
  • Authors are leading experts on execution and implementation

Turn your organization's idea of a year on its head, and speed your journey to success!

19 May 2022The Official Do Good Better Podcast Season Six Ep20 Sing Me A Story Executive Director Austin Atteberry00:15:37

Today Patrick welcomes Austin Atteberry, Executive Director & Co-Founder of Sing Me A Story.

Austin hails from the great city of Chicago where he was raised and where he attended school at Northwestern University (06'). After completing his degree, he released a record as a singer-songwriter and was persuaded to move to Music City - Nashville, TN in 2008.  A few years into his time in Nashville, a beautiful girl named Sara moved in next door to Austin and changed the course of his life forever.

The idea for Sing Me a Story was born in 2011 and started to take shape in May of 2012 after Austin resigned his position at his day job in Nashville. Austin carries an MBA from Pinchot University in Seattle and was married to that beautiful girl next door, Sara, in 2013. They have two dogs (Fat Sam and Coli) and currently reside in the great state of Wisconsin. Austin makes a mean Texas bar-b-que and enjoys the relationships he shares with those he loves the most.

Patrick welcomes CEO & Co-Founder Jeremy Stalnecker to share Mighty Oaks Foundation's military veteran-based mission.

The Mighty Oaks Foundation is a faith-based Veteran service organization that teaches combat Veterans struggling with Post Traumatic Stress how to get beyond combat trauma and live their lives in the manner God intended. Many combat vets are unable to reintegrate back into civilian life, leaving their families to deal with the aftermath of broken homes and suicide at times. By aligning their lives to Biblical principles, these Warriors are able to lead their families, their communities and our nation. Mighty Oaks mission is to serve and restore our nation’s Warriors and families who have endured hardship through their service to America and to help them find a new life purpose through hope in Christ and resiliency and peer-to-peer recovery programs.

09 Jun 2022Love Never Fails: Improving the Lives of Vulnerable Children & Orphans in India | The Official Do Good Better Podcast #20400:16:17

Love Never Fails International began in 2009 when founder, Dr. Johnathan Kraus, felt the calling to leave his teaching career in NJ, USA to go to India and help children suffering in the slums.

This all started after watching the movie
Slumdog Millionaire  with friends from Church.

After God spoke to Johnathan's heart he continued his teaching position in NJ, but would return home each day and fall on his knees crying out to the Lord in tears to open a door to India where he could reach suffering children and provide a solution to poverty. At the time, Johnathan had no connections to make his dream a reality. With much fasting and praying God began to open doors to India and Johnathan moved there in 2010 with passion, love, and a God size vision to see many children in India set free from poverty and come to Jesus.

16 Jun 2022Chelsea's Closet: Inspiring Hope & Healing to Seriously-Ill Children Through Dress Up & Play | The Official Do Good Better Podcast #20600:14:46

Chelsea's Closet inspires hope and healing to seriously-ill children through therapeutic dress up and play. Their Executive Director & Founder, Alison Hicks, joins Patrick today.

Chelsea Hicks was an amazing little girl who loved life.  In April 2007, Chelsea was diagnosed with Stage IV Wilms’ tumor cancer, involving her right kidney, lymph nodes and lungs.  She was just three years old at the time.   Her constant companion during 13 surgeries, 20 months of chemo, and 9 doses of radiation in her 22 months of treatment was “E-E,” her beloved stuffed pink monkey.  Despite all of her treatment and medication, Chelsea always found  an energy and determination to bounce back.   Chelsea’s smiling face and zest for life was contagious.  Chelsea loved to dress up, have tea parties and parades while on the oncology floor.

On February 20, 2009, Chelsea lost her courageous battle.  She was only five years old.  Those who knew her will forever be grateful for the hours of fun and play that she inspired with her impish grin and infectious laughter.  She will never be forgotten and they continue to honor her by helping other kids fighting serious illnesses with The Chelsea Hicks Foundation and Chelsea’s Closet program.

28 Jun 2022Quiet The Noise And Focus With Bessi Graham | The Official Do Good Better Podcast #21100:51:38

Today's 5-Star Guest is "hub of inspiration" Bessi Graham.

Bessi Graham is an award-winning entrepreneur with over 20 years’ experience working with business owners, governments, and large funding bodies to bring “doing good” and “making money” back together. From the grassroots of sitting in the dirt working with business owners in the Pacific Islands to the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Bessi has seen it all and brings an unparalleled perspective on what makes change happen.

Working with people who have “made it” but haven’t found fulfillment, she helps them put their Time, Talent and Treasure to work in ways that align with their values and allow them to create a legacy they can be proud of. Bessi teaches people to quiet the noise of the demands and opinions of others and hear their own voice more clearly so they can contribute from a place of authenticity. She removes the frustration and pressure that comes from living someone else’s idea of success and replaces it with a sense of flow and fulfillment that can only come when you tap into the fullness of who you are and who you are becoming.

14 Jul 2022Accounting Tips for Nonprofits from Jeremy Ulmer of Brady Martz | The Official Do Good Better Podcast #21900:15:30

Today's 5-Star Guest is Jeremy Ulmer, Shareholder & CPA at Brady Martz.

Jeremy grew up on a farm near Fullerton, North Dakota. These days, he lives with his wife, Tosha—who was his high school sweetheart—and their three children, Tory, Christian, and Ryder, in Fargo. He is thankful that his parents also live in Fargo—as he and his family enjoy spending time with them at Big Pine Lake. Jeremy likes Fargo for its great business environment, its proximity to the Minnesota lakes, and the people, who he says, “are grounded and have great work ethic.” Outside of the office, his hobbies include working out, road cycling, and mountain biking.

After graduating from college in 1997, Jeremy was hired by Fiebiger, Swanson, West & Co. PLLP (FSW). He spent his entire career there, working his way up to partner in 2010. In 2019, Jeremy joined Brady Martz as a shareholder via its merger with FSW. He currently serves as the Fargo office lead on employee benefit plan audits and related questions—he is currently the only audit partner in his office who has a tax list that includes both individuals and businesses, including nonprofits and 5500s. Jeremy works with many nonprofit clients and also specializes in performing uniform guidance audits.

06 Sep 2022Marketing Doesn't Have to Be a 4-Letter Word with Jane Pfeiffer | The Official Do Good Better Podcast #24100:37:07

Today's 5-Star Guest is Jane Pfeiffer, Founder & President of Fieldtrip.

Leading by example, Jane guides the Fieldtrip team to develop sound, strategic work imbued with curiosity and significance. A previous research marketing specialist working in television, Jane started our agency with one client, Ashley HomeStore. As she built marketing strategies for Ashley HomeStore she grew new accounts and staff along the way. In our second decade, she has rebranded the agency, ready to take on the next chapter with the same vigor and tenacity that has helped us grow to this point. She is ferociously dedicated to ensuring everyone in and around the agency knows exactly where they’re headed and how they’ll get there. Jane says her biggest accomplishment is trusting her team to build an agency bigger than anything she could have dreamed of. But we know the truth of it, as she quotes Yoda—”Do or do not. There is no try.” Jane does.

13 Sep 2022Conscious Marketing for Purpose-Driven Brands with Ashlee Sang | The Official Do Good Better Podcast #24400:43:42

Today's 5-Star Guest is Ashlee Sang,  Brand Messaging Strategist, Consultant & Collaborator at Ashlee Sang Consulting.

Ashlee found her way to marketing and communications via an unconventional mix of Anthropology, Linguistics, and French at Washington University in St. Louis. (All of which influence her current work, believe it or not.)

Before launching her business full-time in 2019, Ashlee worked with nonprofits, including a law school alumni department, an international headquarters of a human rights education NGO, and a county branch of Habitat for Humanity. She also freelanced on the side for many years, not knowing at the time that she was preparing for entrepreneurship.

By combining these experiences with the conscious consumerism movement she was exploring in her personal life, Ashlee discovered brand messaging and marketing strategy and business for good...and never looked back.

She has since worked with over 70 businesses on everything from brand development and media list building to content creation and copywriting, always with values and audience-driven messaging at the core.
