15 Jun 2024 | Senua's Saga: Hellblade II & the Summer of Games 2024 | 01:22:33
E3 might be dead, but we still got a boat load of trailers last weekend and as usual we're here to talk all about it. We all loved the look of Ubisoft's imminent Star Wars Outlaws, which got two enormous gameplay reveals at their conference, while Monster Hunter Wilds cut through with it's unique beasts and intense weather conditions. Not to mention a whole host of surprises we cover at length. Before all that though, Rob got himself a month of Gamepass to play Ninja Theory's long awaited yet somewhat underwhelming Senua's Saga Hellblade II as well as a whole grab bag of treats also on the service. Not sure when we'll be back, summer commitments allowing, we may do a spoilercast on Baldur's Gate 3 or something... if Rob & Will ever finish it. 24 Jul 2023 | Final Fantasy XVI, Sniper Elite 5 & more! | 00:39:14
Rob was going utterly insane at Marcus for buying a copy of Final Fantasy XVI without anything to play it on, but it turned out to be an elaborate hilarious joke! For Marcus has actually joined the PS5 space race after all! Listen on for our thoughts on Square's latest entry in their long running franchise! Meanwhile, Will has been performing open heart surgery on Nazi's from distance, in Rebellion's similarly storied series. 03 Dec 2024 | Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Monster Hunter Wilds, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl & more! | 01:17:20
After that disaster-piece of an episode last time around, we thought we'd try super hard to make this one a success, it could be argued even, that we overcompensated. Rob even took one for the team and shelled out an exorbitant sum for a PS5 Pro just to make up for it. He's even had to play Star: Wars: Outlaws in it's newly patched 60FPS + DLC glory. Oh and the new Dragon Age. It's been a tough old time. It really has. And then there's poor old Marcus, with his time on the Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta only for it to be taken away until it's proper release date early next year, at least Will was man enough to tackle S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 - Heart of Chornobyl. We hope you find this episode more acceptable, or at least how much we suffered for it :) All this and more on a somewhat glitchy #NOTplaying Podcast! 12 Sep 2024 | Star Wars Outlaws, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, Thank Goodness You're Here & more! | 01:06:27
We're back! After an extended summer break in which Rob actually succumbed to the great videogame staff cull of 2024 and therefore played the most disgusting amount of actual videogames possible. And who can blame him the summer took so long to actually begin, but begin it finally did and off went Marcus and Will a frolicking... So yeah - it's mostly Rob who's bringing the games this week, namely Star Wars Outlaws and Space Marine 2. Will & Rob have BOTH played Thank Goodness You're Here though, to varying levels of success. All this and everything we missed at Gamescom, the Playstation 5 Pro - which will hopefully reverse Sony's fortunes after the disastrous launch(?) of Concord and much much more! It's good to be back :) Contact us on Email at: notplayingpodcast@gmail.com Follow us on Twitter: @notplayingpod If you're listening on iTunes or Spotify, please give us a review! 27 Nov 2023 | Spider-Man 2, Diablo IV, Alan Wake 2 & more! | 01:23:56
The games are coming thick and fast as we approach the end of another year in gaming. And it only feels right that such an incredible 12 months should come to such a crescendo, with Rob having already completed Spider-Man 2 since last episode and moving straight on to Alan Wake 2. On the other hand, Will still hasn't settled on his 'perfect character' to finish Baldur's Gate 3 with and Marcus is still bossing mechs around in Armored Core VI. We all have lives to varying extents it would seem. Enjoy this our most penultimate episode of 2023! Back soon for Xmas japes and GOTY discussion! 06 May 2024 | Fallout on Prime Video, Dragon's Dogma 2 & more! | 01:06:20
We don't normally bang on about TV shows (We'd be a man down if we did), but while we have been playing some new stuff, the biggest single event in videogames for the past month or so would have to be the miraculous conversion of Bethesda's beloved videogame series into passive televisual entertainment and who are we to argue with the alleged 65 million people who watched it! Back in actual videogame land though, Will has been leading the charge with his time on Dragon's Dogma 2, while Rob and Marcus are still knee deep in Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth and Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden respectively. All this and more on a most post-apocalyptic #NOTplaying podcast...

24 Apr 2023 | Dredge, Starfield, Final Fantasy XVI & more! | 01:23:31
E3 might not be happening this year, but we still have plenty to discuss this month, including release dates for Starfield and the much delayed Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League. We've also all been going a bit gooey over Sony's recent Final Fantasy focussed State of Play, so expect much more on that game when it releases in just a couple of short months time! And Rob's been having a right old spring clean of stuff he started before Christmas, so some final thoughts on God of War Ragnarok & Midnight Suns, before launching into how Team 17's Dredge has helped him fall back in love with his much neglected Nintendo Switch. 31 Jan 2022 | 2022 Preview inc. God of War Ragnarok, Starfield, Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring & more! | 01:33:25
Quite a bumper episode this week, since we thought it would be enough to go through which games we are looking forward to in 2022 should they actually come out, but then Microsoft thought they would kick the year off with the absolute megaton of them deciding to purchase the troubled Activision/Blizzard. What ramifications will this have on the industry? And how good will this be for gamers? All this and more on our first proper episode of 2022! 14 Mar 2022 | Elden Ring, Horizon Forbidden West, Dying Light 2 & more! | 01:35:01
There's no getting around it, February was a lot. Not 1, not 2, but 3 massive open world games, more multi-billion dollar studio acquisitions and - of course - more delays. In this week's episode we analyse the fallout only to discover that all three of us are playing the same thing, although that may not be for very long given that one that it is! 02 May 2022 | Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Weird West, Tunic & more! | 01:05:32
While the last few weeks has seemed a bit quiet on the game release front compared to the bloodbath in February, we've let rather a lot of news stack up this time. Leading the charge is Sony, with the recently restructured digital membership offerings and a couple of State of Play's covering Hogwarts Legacy and the imminent side-scrolling cousin to Ghost of Tsushima, Trek to Yomi. There's also the wonderful news that Amy Hennig will get a chance to make her Star Wars game finally amidst a truly stacked line-up of entries in that particular franchise currently in development. As for what we've been playing, Will's chucked a bunch of time into Borderlands spin-off, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Rob's been using his Easter break to get to some Gamepass indies and Marcus is still making his way through Elden Ring. We'll be back some time in June once the dust has settled on whatever this year's #NOTE3 Summer of Games turns out to be. We'll be surprised if there isn't at least something Starfield-shaped at the Microsoft/Bethesda showcase announced for June 12. In the meantime, enjoy this latest episode of the #NOTplaying Podcast! 19 Jul 2022 | Summer of Games 2022 inc. Starfield, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Trek to Yomi & more! | 01:07:07
Sorry for the delay on this episode, but we've all been a bit in the wars lately with various bouts of lingering covid and it's been so hot this week that we plain forgot to put the episode out despite it being in the can for a few days... And it took a while for us to get round to recording our thoughts on what used to consitute E3 in years past, so this one is actually quite brief compared to our usual extensive coverage, but in a year that's seen it's fair share of delays is there really much point in getting excited about games that may not see the light of day for years to come anyway... Long term listeners won't be surprised that our conversation here gravitates mostly towards the Bethesda/Capcom end of things, but the big news really is that Will finally got hold of a PS5 and that Rob should have put down actual money that he'd get through Horizon Forbiden West before him. And no, Marcus still hasn't finished the Final Fantasy VII remake, despite being really excited for the next installment of the remake trilogy... 26 Aug 2022 | Stray, PSVR 2, GTA VI, Gamescom & more! | 00:56:31
We didn't think we had a lot to get into this week, but in a moment of supreme scheduling cock-ups we found ourselves recording actually during Geoff Keighley's Gamescom opening night extravaganza, so the miniscule amount of news we did have was ultimately interrupted by a number of unexcepted megatons, including a release date for Return to Monkey Island, which we will likely be talking about more in our next episode! Let's not get ahead of ourselves though, while gaming time may have been on backburner slightly during the summer months, we all managed to have a go on the much-anticipated cat adventure, Stray, whilst sampling the many delights of Sony's new (playhole) Playstation Plus/Extra/Premium service and Rob's still plugging away at Horizon Forbidden West. Will he finish it in time for God of War Ragnarok? Listen on dear listener and watch this space! 10 Oct 2022 | Return to Monkey Island, Immortality, Stadia RIP & more! | 01:40:20
Bit of a news-heavy episode this month as we chronicle the inevitable demise of Google Stadia, a slew of announcements from the far-east via Tokyo Game Show, Nintendo Direct & Sony's recent State of Play, while in the west Disney un-delay Midnight Suns and Ubisoft let rip with a absolute cavalcade of information regarding the future of the Assassin's Creed franchise. Meanwhile in actual gaming land, Rob & Will have been enjoying the latest (final?) instalment of the Monkey Island series, Rob alone has been exploring Sam Barlow's latest FMV curiosity, Immortality and while Marcus (shockingly) hasn't been playing anything much new, he did enjoy the recent Distant Worlds concert at the Royal Albert Hall, which at least amounts to more effort than simply switching on a console... 14 Nov 2022 | God of War Ragnarök, A Plague Tale Requiem, Marvel Snap & more! | 01:04:23
It's not often we all find ourselves in the same room these days, especially given recent events, but as luck would have it, Will happened to be in town around the time our latest episode was due, so we were able to sit round a mike round Rob's and shoot the shit in person. We were also joined by long term friend of the show and #NOTlistening collaborator, Ash. Top of the list is probably the recent PSVR2 announcement, followed up with great furiosity by the release of God of War Ragnarök, which at time of recording Rob had only played the first few hours of and was still basking in the warm glow of having recently finished A Plague Tale Requiem. Also everyone except Will has been playing the insidiously addictive Marvel Snap - he's been too busy with Overwatch 2 and platinuming Skyrim. Because only PSN trophies count. Or something... :S Contact us on Email at: notplayingpodcast@gmail.com Follow us on Twitter: @notplayingpod If you're listening on iTunes, please give us a review! 22 Dec 2022 | The Game Awards 2022 inc. Judas, Jedi Survivor, Streetfighter 6, Death Stranding 2 & more! | 00:39:44
In this most festive and final episode of 2022 we pick out some of our highlights from Geoff Keighley's annual advert (and also awards show) extravaganza, catch up on the latest from Microsoft's epic buyout of Activision & weigh in with our opinions on the divisive Forspoken Demo that recently hit PSN. And following on from last year's success, Will is back with another cryptic quiz, highlighting the very best games of the year, but spelled wrong to give it just a dash of #NOTplaying flavour. Back in the new year with our games of 2022 and what we're looking forward to in 2023! Until then, have an absolutely stonking Christmas and a not so shabby new year! 23 Jan 2023 | Our favourite games of 2022 inc. Marvel's Midnight Suns, A Plague Tale: Requiem, God of War Ragnarok & more! | 01:03:55
The moratorium on saying 'Happy New Year' may be up, but we're still only in January so there's time for us to finally share our favourite games of 2022. Well, Rob did anyway. The others have their excuses, but you can wait for them to explain themselves. 07 Mar 2023 | Hi-fi Rush, Atomic Heart, Baldur's Gate 3 & more! | 01:22:13
After a few understandably slow years it's quite refreshing to have not 1 but 2 significant game releases this early in the year, not to mention some timely updates from the main players in our delightful hobby. These haven't been without controversy though, with the games media understandably frustrated by Microsoft's shadowdrop release of Bethesda and Tango Gameworks' rhythm-action mashup, Hi-Fi Rush, while out on the frontlines of Ukraine the deputy minister of digital transformation is seeking a worldwide ban on Mundfish's recent ode to the Bioshocks, Atomic Heart. Because they love peace or something... All this and the usual updates on other things we've been playing - there's even a little tabletop time this week after Rob's recent indulgent excursion to the Cotswolds! Hosted on Acast. 22 May 2023 | The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Star Wars - Jedi Survivor, Street Fighter 6 & more! | 01:17:01
Games games and more GAMES. That's all we're talking about this week simply because that's all we have time for, aside from perhaps a quick update on the whole Microsoft Activision saga, which likely will continue to rage on for the rest of 2023. Like I just said though, there's no time for that though on a episode that features likely more than one GOTY contender and there can be no more likely candidate than the 20th entry in Nintendo's storied Zelda franchise, which builds on the previous game, Breath of the Wild in some unique and interesting ways. The same could be said for Respawn's second Jedi game, unlike Capcom's new Street Fighter game, which is arguably it's most unhinged version to date. Anyway, I barely have time to continue typing this now. I have Zonai devices to catch... or something. 06 Jan 2025 | Our favourite games of 2024 inc. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, The Game Awards & more! | 01:30:05
Happy New Year all! We hope you got all the videogames you wanted and most importantly some well earned time to enjoy them! We certainly did, in the gift of Machine Games' remarkable Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which really didn't need to be anywhere near as good as it turned out in the end. So good in fact to receive full honours from at least one of us in our regular games of the year segment as is tradition. We also go over the big winners from the recent Game Awards show just before Christmas, as well as a detailed analysis of the big announcements. We'll be back in 12 months to see how right we were about the success or indeed, actual release, of said phenomena. 29 Aug 2023 | Baldur's Gate 3, Gamescom 2023 & more! | 00:53:03
On this week's show we're catching the last rays of summer from the comfort of Rob's sofa once again as we meet up in person for a change to discuss our usual winning combo of recent gaming news and the games what we have recently been playing. And this time around we're talking Baldur's Gate 3, which recently exited it's state of early access to equally insane amounts of acclaim and concurent Steam Users. We also highlight some of the moments from Geoff Keighley's ONL Gamescom spectacle and see how Marcus is getting on with Final Fantasy XVI after Rob's valiant attempt at finishing one RPG before the next one turns up.. ...speaking of which, what's the in the sky? 26 Mar 2024 | Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Helldivers 2, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden & more! | 01:16:34
So much for a fallow year, for here we are with a brand new potential GOTY contender EACH! And so early in the year we are too! As was very well signposted in our last episode, Marcus has finally polished off 2020's FFVII Remake just in time for it's follow-up, Rebirth, which he has so far been sacrificing sleep for, Will has been diving into hell, with sleeper hit of the year, Helldivers 2 and Rob decided to roll the dice on Dontnod's Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, which features a pair of protagonists who mostly like to curl up by the fire and... ...it's all about the sleep (groan) on this week's #NOTplaying Podcast Contact us on Email at: notplayingpodcast@gmail.com Follow us on Twitter: @notplayingpod If you're listening on iTunes or Spotify, please give us a review! 12 Feb 2024 | Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, FFVII Rebirth, God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla & more! | 01:24:03
2024 is off to quite a start with extensive showcases from both Microsoft and Sony within the first few weeks of the year as well as a genuine GOTY contender in Ubisoft's latest refresh of the Prince of Persia franchise, which goes back to it's roots in a supremely slick take on the classic 2D 'metroidvania' action platforming genre. Will's also had the chance to finish God of War Ragnarok as well as have a quick peruse of it's recently released Free DLC, Valhalla, while Marcus has been foaming all over the imminent FFVII Rebirth and the demo that came out along with that dedicated State of Play last week. We can only apologise for this one. If it wasn't connections dropping or random things banging around, it was furiously typing to look things up. It's all a bit of a mess this week sadly :( Amidst the Chaos however, we were able to lay down our highlights from the most recent online presentations from Microsoft & Sony, as well our thoughts on a couple of cool indie games which recently came out: Devolver's delightfully artistic The Plucky Squire and UFO 50, a proposition so bizarre extreme measures were implemented to deal with it. E3 may not have happened again in 2023, but it's still that time of year again where we are inundated with showcases and trailers. All the main platform holders more than delivered, with Microsoft devoting almost half of their 90+ minute event to the monolithic Starfield and Sony showing off a good 15 minutes of the imminent full sequel to Spider-man. 16 Oct 2023 | Starfield, Assassin's Creed Mirage, Armored Core VI & more! | 01:19:43
We're emerging from underneath a gigantic pile of gaming rubble this week to share our thoughts on just a handful of titles amidst the current tidal wave of autumn releases. First up is the almost podcast shattering paradox of Starfield, then we've got the latest (albeit significantly paired back) installment of Assassin's Creed and even Marcus has something new to play in From Software's non-dark-souls-but-still-hard-as-fuck mech resurrection, Armored Core VI. There's also more futuristic ultra violence in the recently released Robocop: Rogue City demo and the new Cyberpunk 2077 DLC/(MASSIVE)update, Phantom Liberty. Bit of a last minute one this week, because we were just about to upload this week's episode when we realised we hadn't recorded it yet. 16 Jan 2017 | #161: Our Top Videogames of 2016 inc. Doom, Firewatch, Inside & more! | 00:30:22
On this week's show we're going through our favourite videogames of 2016. Rob's put together his list with the usual level of scientific and objective accuracy, whilst Iain has simply opted to include his personal favourites of the year, in no particular order. Suffice it to say, most bases are covered, especially given that Rob was able to become a console slummer before the year was out. Included (in no particular order) are... This week we're casting our beady eyes over 2017 and talking about some of the games we're looking forward to this year. Right off the bat, it's clear that not a great many big games actually have release dates yet, possibly due to Nintendo dropping their new console in Q1 or maybe because of the insane Christmas Gold-rush we experienced at the tail end of 2016... 2017 in Videogames https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_in_video_gaming Contact us on Email at: notplayingpodcast@gmail.com Follow us on Twitter: @notplayingpod You can find the show notes for this show at www.notlistening.co.uk If you're listening on iTunes, please give us a review! 13 Feb 2017 | #163: Nintendo Switch, Hitman, Yakuza 0 & more! | 00:40:46
This week's show is almost completely dominated by Japan, which is kind of appropriate given the land of the Rising Sun seems to be owning the beginning of 2017. Nintendo are about to release a new innovative console, Square Enix have multiple Final Fantasies being remade and have more than established a foothold in the conventional western videogame space with their recent reinvention of the Hitman series, which Rob has finally made a start on (and is also now available in full season retail form). And that's without mentioning the recent deal Square made with Marvel, which is actually something of a two-ended sword in these parts... all this & more on an especially oriental-orientated #NOTplaying Podcast! 27 Feb 2017 | #164: Bloodborne, Bards Tale 4, E3 goes public & more! | 00:13:27
It's another half-arsed episode this week unfortunately. Just Rob on his tod again with a quick update of what's going on game-wise for him ATM. Actually, let's just stop this third person pretense and allow me to indulge myself with some games I've been playing since we last recorded. Spoiler: there's not a lot new, except that I finally cut my teeth on a From Software game and failed spectacularly to play anything new and/or decent in VR despite my best efforts... On this week's show we're mostly talking about Horizon Zero Dawn and whether or not this is the game that justifies getting a PS4 over an Xbox One. 11 Apr 2017 | #166: EGX Rezzed 2017, Torment: Tides of Numenera & more! | 00:25:00
On this week's show Rob recounts his recent annual pilgrimage to Eurogamer's Spring-time Extravaganza @ London's Tobacco Dock, as well as his time spent with Torment: Tides of Numenera for lack of any decent AAA RPGs to play right now - if you discount Zelda of course. And the less said about Mass Effect the better... (suffice it say, short of Adam making an appearance at some point, there won't be any further mention of it here!) 02 May 2017 | #167: The thing about RPGs is... featuring Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, The Witcher & more! | 00:53:31
You may have noticed the frequency of episodes has slowed down somewhat this year, but we've decided to make it count after our announcement of a new monthly schedule for the show going forward. We've got the big guns this week - Will from our flagship #NOTlistening Podcast decided to get involved in our rambling discussion of all things RPG. In this show, we talk about some of our favourites and even ended up with an idea for a follow-up episode as a result. You'll have to watch this space for that... 31 May 2017 | #168: Prey, Nioh, What Remains of Edith Finch & more! | 00:44:14
It's been a while, but Iain is finally back for the first time in months to talk about what he's been playing this week, including walking sim of the moment, What Remains of Edith Finch and the incredibly badly named but exquisitely well-designed early access multiplayer sensation that is PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS (Yes - it's so bad we refuse to put it in the show headline). Meanwhile Rob's been grappling with Team Ninja's Nioh on PS4 and Arkane's new immersive sim, Prey. Since we kidnapped Will again for this E3 bonanza, the #NOTlistening crew decided to put together their own 'Idiot's Guide' to last week's proceedings. If however you're looking for something a little more... concise(?), then look no further. 17 Jul 2017 | #170: The Thing about RPGs is... Part 2. | 01:05:40
It's turning into quite the long hot summer this year and since we've almost been completely starved of new games for the past couple of months we're just rambling on about bollocks again in this second part of our 'What is an RPG?' discussion. This time we had Iain around to throw his thoughts on the pile. Thankfully it looks like there are a few new games coming out in the next couple of weeks so our next episode will hopefully be more business as usual. In the meantime, here's a bunch of nonsense we recorded a few weeks back.... Enjoy! 14 Aug 2017 | #171: Pyre, Lawbreakers, Shadow of War & more! | 00:58:27
July was a rough month for videogames, with barely a single release worth discussing. The floodgates are beginning to open though, with the release of Supergiant Games' latest, Pyre - a strange hybrid of RPG and Basketball. We've also gone back to The Division, Marcus is still plugging away at Final Fantasy XV and both Rob and Will have finished Horizon Zero Dawn. We also discuss the tepid launch of Cliff Blezinksi's Lawbreakers, the new Hearthstone expansion, Knights of the Frozen Throne and end up discussing the increasing of trend of lootboxes showing up in the games we play. 20 Nov 2017 | #174: Paris Games Week, Visceral Games & a bunch of sequels we would like to see... | 00:51:38
We haven't covered news on this show for a while now, but there were a couple of developments over the past few weeks that we couldn't ignore. First being the incredibly sad and frustrating closure of Visceral Games and the cancellation of Amy Hennig's Star Wars game. Thankfully Sony's Paris Games Week presentation was there to assure the world that traditional single player videogames are far from extinct. 21 Dec 2017 | #175: Our Games of 2017 | 00:29:44
It's been a slow year for us on the #NOTplaying Podcast. We dropped our episode schedule down to monthly and that's reflected in the number of games we've been able to play. We've also been leaning on some old favourites too, so even with so many great games coming out over the past 12 months, 2017 has felt like a bit of a snooze. There have been some highlights though, which we would like to share with you on our last show of the year. Merry Christmas & a very Happy new year to all of you who have stuck with us! Nothing much new this episode, but Rob did get a free copy of Ghost Recon: Wildlands with his shiny new microphone (which he utterly failed at recording this month's particular shambles of an episode with) and Iain's been playing it too, so we go on at some length about that. Also: Marcus played something called Gang Beasts and Rob managed to get through the entirery of Alien: Isolation - which is something of an achievement given how long that game has been in his Steam Library... 18 Jun 2018 | #181: E3 2018 - Part 1 inc. Fallout 76, Spider-man, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Cyberpunk 2077 & more! | 00:51:58
It's that time of year again, when we set our mice and controllers down and have all our disposable downtime taken up with trailers and interviews and gameplay demonstrations of games we won't get to play for month or even years. That's right! It's E3 2018!!! The giant videogame conference that there's absolutely no need to attend in person unless you're one of those lucky people that get's to see Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay behind closed doors... (grumble grumble :( ) Not that we're jealous at all, since we still got to see an awful lot of exciting new stuff across the various conference streams and youTube clips appearing in our feeds all last week. As the message at the top of the show will inform you, we did go on quite a bit. So long in fact that we've decided to split this into two shows. This first part catches the hype-surf with all the things we're most excited about, while in the second part we get a bit more critical and explore some of the weirder & wilder parts of the show. So look out for that in a few weeks time. Until then, enjoy part 1 of our extensive E3 coverage! :D Contact us on Email at: notplayingpodcast@gmail.com Follow us on Twitter: @notplayingpod You can find the show notes for this show at www.notlistening.co.uk If you're listening on iTunes, please give us a review! Yeah. It does feel like a while ago now, especially now the World Cup is over, but we decided to hold back some of our E3 coverage to help nurse the summer drought. Spider-man! Spider-man! If there's a game to lead with this month this one can! You heard it right. Both Rob and Iain have been playing Sony & Insomniac's Arkham-level treatment of Marvel's most beloved and iconic superhero, while Will has been wrestling with South Park: The Fractured But Whole & Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus and Marcus has been up to more Zeldaing in Hyrule Warriors on the WiiU! It's just Rob & Iain this month and both are still quite entrenched in Spider-man. They did manage to get to some other things though, namely the latest (& concluding) installment of Tomb Raider, Survios' boxing movie tie-in, Creed: Rise to Glory & Overkill's take on the relentless Walking Dead franchise. It's that time again, but we've gone for a slightly different approach in discussing our games of the year this time. Well, we've pretty much wholesale thieved Polygon's 'The Besties' 'Battle Royale' format - where we arbitrarily seed our shortlist of games by a number of different criteria and then let them face off against one another until there is one victor. That was the intention anyway. Listen on to see how well it turned out... 25 Feb 2019 | #189: More Assassin's Creed, More Spider-man, DLC for both & not much more. Sorry :/ | 00:34:44
It's only February and already we have some games that might be in the conversation for Game of the Year 2019: Apex Legends, Metro: Exodus, Slay the Spire, Tetris 99, Resident Evil 2... We've also had Kingdom Hearts 3, Anthem, Far Cry: New Dawn & Crackdown 3. Good or bad, one thing you can be sure of is that at time of recording, we've #NOT played any of them. We might not be on the bleeding edge of gaming this month, but at least we're honest. So instead of any insightful conversation about any games to have come out so far this year, enjoy us droning on about some DLC for stuff we've already been banging on about for ages. Because #toomanygames #gamesaretoolong etc. Hopefully we'll have played something new before E3 rolls around... 25 Mar 2019 | #190: Star Wars Games - Past, Present, Future | 00:30:56
There's been a fair amount of news and controversy surrounding the Star Wars franchise and it's current usage in videogames recently, not least of which is the apparent level of de-satisfaction being levelled at EA's channelling of it. There's even been rumblings of Disney's own 'Lucasarts' trademark being resurrected from the ashes (though this episode was recorded a while before that). So here's our musings on the situation, our history with the games and other assorted ramblings... Enjoy! 15 Apr 2019 | #191: EGX Rezzed, BAFTAS, Stadia, Vampire Bloodlines 2, Borderlands 3 & more! | 01:22:27
After a few lacklustre episodes (we just hadn't had time to play much of anything new - sorry!) we're making it up to you this month with an absolutely packed show. First up we have to address some recent sequel announcements of the vampiric and borderlands variety, as well as the reveal of Google's new games streaming service, Stadia. Will's been on post apocalyptic shooter duty with Far Cry New Dawn and Metro Exodus, Rob's been getting a bit miffed by the new Hearthstone expansion and Marcus has been having a party with um.... Mario Party? And then we're off on our annual pilgrimage to London's Tobacco Dock, for EGX Rezzed where we all got to play a bunch of different things: Ape Out, Divinity Fallen Heroes, Everspace, My Friend Pedro & much much more... And all that before hobnobbing with Videogame Royalty at the BAFTA Games Awards, the winners of which, we discuss in detail here... Happy? 28 May 2019 | #192: Rage 2, PS5 Specs, E3 2019 Predictions & more! | 01:11:39
It's been about a week or so since the last post-apocalyptic shooter came out and I'm not even talking about Rage 2 - which kicks of this month's episode, with Will having given it a good once over. Rob's found himself getting sucked into the actual real-life sport that is Formula 1 after picking up Codemasters' F1 2018 for a song and Marcus probably leads the charge with some of the wackiest E3 predictions ever recorded. We also weigh in on the recently announced target specs for PS5 and what it might mean for the next generation of consoles. Next month: listen to how absolutely bang on our predictions were. #hypetrain #e3 #etc Contact us on Email at: notplayingpodcast@gmail.com Follow us on Twitter: @notplayingpod You can find the show notes for this show at www.notlistening.co.uk If you're listening on iTunes, please give us a review! 17 Jun 2019 | #193: E3 2019 inc. Cyberpunk 2077, Watchdogs Legion, The Outer Worlds & more! | 01:14:34
This being a videogames podcast, what else could this month's episode possibly be about? Yes. It's that time of year again where we go through all the announcements at this year's E3 event in Los Angeles, the mecca of all that is gaming. The annual event that sets the agenda for what we'll be interacting with for the next 12 months and while this year certainly had it's fair share of pulled punches as we teeter on the brink of a next generation of consoles and an inevitably subscription-based streaming future, there were enough release dates set in stone to suggest an exciting year ahead. The only question remaining is how spot-on or not we were with our predictions in the last episode... 15 Jul 2019 | #194: Google Stadia & the future of videogames | 00:27:21
Google announced more details about it's 'Stadia' streaming platfrom prior to E3 and so it's shadow loomed large over the conference. Ubisoft seem to be embracing it, as do Bethesda & Electronic Arts, but where will this leave the first party publishers? Will consoles become a thing of the past as local processing becomes more and more irrelevant? On this episode, we attempt to answer these questions and many more... 12 Aug 2019 | #195: Final Fantasy VII & the issue of Videogame Nostalgia | 00:24:20
Nostalgia is a funny old thing. It can turn even the sanest minds into dribbling wrecks at the mere whiff of childhood happiness. And don't those publishers know it. Why spend hundreds of man-hours coming up with original content when there are all those new platforms to have things ported to and why indeed make a new Final Fantasy game, when you can just mine an existing one? And so it was that the subject of the Final Fantasy VII remake came up during our breakdown of Square Enix's E3 presentation a few weeks back. And Rob found it so hard to comprehend Marcus's enthusiasm, that we thought it was worth spinning out into it's own episode... 30 Sep 2019 | #196: The Last of Us Part II, Borderlands 3, A Plague Tale: Innocence & more! | 00:48:24
So this episode was originally supposed to be with you a little sooner, but we've had some illness and family issues to deal with and then Sony & Microsoft decided to run their online announcement streams on the night we were going to record so you're getting the september episode right at the end of the month rather than somewhere in the middle of it. If there's any upside to all of this it's that the longer we leave it, the more stuff we've played and/or can talk about. So after getting our take on said streams and the announcements within, Will gives his opinion on the latest Borderlands game, Marcus dresses down Epic Games' attempt at a game so very close to his heart and Rob talks about the first game of 2019 he's played, the surprisingly well-executed A Plague Tale: Innocence. It's been a while since we last posted an episode and to be honest we weren't expecting to be back with you so soon, but then a mutant plague got inflicted upon the world and we're all holed up in our various hobbit holes with not very much to do. There's always gaming though and oh how very much we've fallen back on our erstwhile hobby of choice. We've been subscribing to various online services, re-embracing the art of co-op online multiplayer and finally getting to play some games that until recently seemed like nothing more than a pipedream - all in a desperate bid to stay sane during these most apocalyptic of times. 26 May 2020 | #NOTe3 Part 1: Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Ghost of Tsushima, Unreal Engine 5 & more! | 01:09:48
So E3 is definitely cancelled this year, but all that news has got to go somewhere and it looks like Geoff Keighley is on the right track, beginning what looks likely to be a regular drip feed of announcements over the entire summer to begin preparing us for the new console generation kicking off at the end of the year. So on this week's show, we spend most of our time picking over the various morsels that have been demoed (or #NOT) to us so far, including the latest installment of the currently (in our humble opinion) GOTY quality Assassin's Creed series, quite possibly the final PS4 exclusive Samurai Adventure, Ghost of Tsushima and the latest version of the game engine that powers just about everything, Unreal 5. All this and some rambling about what we're currently playing at the end. The Summer of Games keeps on swinging in lieu of there being any proper E3 this year and on this edition of the #NOTe3 show we're taking our first look at the Playstation 5, as well as the first batch of games that will be available for the system, a new X-Wing game (Finally!) in EA's Star Wars Squadrons and a load more juicy details on the eternally and torturously delayed Cyberpunk 2077. #3: Watch_dogs, CastAR, Titanfall & more On this week's news roundup we talk about all the delay nonsense going on at Ubisoft, including the postponement of watch_dogs (and therefore, effectively the next generation as far as we're concerned) and whatever the opposite of that is for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (The current gen versions at least...). We also look at what's coming in November on Playstation Plus, rumours of a Red Dead Redemption sequel and a new Alien game, some exciting new VR announcements that might give the Oculus Rift a run for it's money and those exciting(?) new hardware announcements from Apple. All this and more in this week's more timely news-focused edition of the Game DumpCAST. 06 Nov 2013 | #4 Beyond:Two Souls & Shadowrun Returns | 00:49:00
#4 Beyond: Two Souls, Shadowrun Returns & More This week we talk about some of the games we've been playing, including Quantic Dream's latest interactive drama, Beyond: Two Souls, famously starring Ellen Page and Willem DaFoe. We also dig into the end result of Hairbrained Schemes' wildly successful kickstarter project, Shadowrun Returns, the early access PC version of State of Decay and Patrick dazzles us with tales from the VR future, specifically Euro Truck Simulator 2 - which some are hailing as the true next generation of video games (!?!?!). We also discuss the current state of MMOs and Square Enix's attempt to fit Deus Ex on a mobile phone. All this and more in this week's Game DumpCAST. 12 Nov 2013 | #5 Call of Duty, Batman: Arkham Origins | 00:54:48
#5 Call of Duty: Ghosts, Batman: Arkham Origins & more... It's another dose of gaming news this week as we discuss this year's crop of (almost) annualised sequels, including Call of Duty: Ghosts, Batman: Arkham Origins & Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Of course, we haven't played any of them ourselves, but that's not gonna stop us having an opinion on the general consensus! There's also word from Telltale about both the second season of their acclaimed Walking Dead series and their recently launched Fables game, The Wolf Among Us. There's discussion on what the PS4 can't do and what Motorola's recently announced Project Ara CAN. And of course it wouldn't be a Game DumpCAST without an update on all things VR, featuring Oculus Rift, CastAR and Tactical Haptics. All this and more on this week's Game DumpCAST... Game DumpCAST #6 Metro: Last Light, Battlefield 4 and more... On this week's show we talk about the masterpiece that is 4A Games' Metro: Last Light and how they were able to achieve so much with so little, Patrick comes back from the VR brink after treating his Oculus Rift to some Halloween scares and Iain tells us all about the latest installment of EA's military shooter series, Battlefield 4. Game DumpCAST #7: PS4 and Xbox One Special As the next generation of consoles begins we run down some of the top stores from this most momentous couple of weeks in gaming. Smelly Controllers, Kinect witchcraft and the heinous act of plugging a PS4 into an Xbox One are all covered here. We even have a special guest in the form of Game Developer, Tim Diggle, to give us his own unique perspective on recent events. All this and more in this week's news-packed Game DumpCAST! 03 Dec 2013 | #8: Bandit Skies, Torchlight 2 and more | 00:56:54
Game DumpCAST: #8: Bandit Skies, Torchlight 2 and more... On this week's show we talk to Game Developer, Tim Diggle about his bullet hell shooter, Bandit Skies, discuss the co-op merits of Diablo clone, Torchlight 2 and convince each other that we were man enough to finish Outlast (honest!). In the VR corner this week is Blue Estate, Minecraft and F1 2013. And it looks like Iain and Patrick have had their fill of GTAV, without having even finished the single player campaign - will the PC version be worth hanging around for? 10 Dec 2013 | #9 Broken Sword 5, The Mandate and more | 00:39:00
Game DumpCAST: #9: Broken Sword 5, The Mandate and more You could say it was a bit of a slow news week - so slow in fact, that it's started us thinking about how we structure the show (you have been warned! :S). Aside from the expected teething troubles of the new consoles, some mobile game announcements and game-related movie news, there wasn't an awful lot to talk about. The most promising tidbits are in the title in fact... we promise next week's show will be better, but you can't knock us for trying... Enjoy?!?!?! 18 Dec 2013 | #10: Gone Home, Black Flag, Dead Space 3 | 00:46:10
Game DumpCAST: #10: Gone Home, Black Flag, Dead Space 3 On this week's show we go all Emo with Gone Home, swashbuckle our way through Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and freak ourselves out good and proper playing Dead Space 3 in co-op. There's also a token sprinkling of VR in the form of Kairo, some mobile thrills with the amusingly retitled Stealth Inc. and finally Rob going all misty eyed with Nostalgia playing the recently reimagined Castle of Illusion. Suffice it to say, it was far from 'Mickey Mouse'. 23 Dec 2013 | #11: Teh! Best! Games! EVAH! (2013)!!! | 01:50:35
On this final Game DumpCAST of the year we thought it would only be right to go over some of our favourite gaming moments of 2013 and try to figure out our top 5 games of the year. We’ve bent the rules slightly in that some of the games mentioned might not have come out in the past 12 months, but this is our podcast and we make the rules, so if you don’t like it - don’t listen. With that mild hostility out of the way, sit back and enjoy as we chat about our favourite videogames of 2013! 12 Jan 2014 | #12 Steam Machines & Playstation Now | 00:57:27
This first episode of 2014 was intended to be a preview show of sorts, showcasing some of the games we're looking forward to over the next 12 months - we've had to push that to next week though because, well, CES 2014 happened... and we had to get to all the news that dropped there while it was still fresh in our minds. This includes the grand unveiling of the first wave of Steam Machines, the new improved version of the Oculus Rift, the news that Titanfall's player count will only be 6 Vs 6 and Sony's new Playstation Now streaming games system. It's all about quality over quantity on this first Game DumpCAST of 2014! 20 Jan 2014 | #13 2014 Preview - Day Z, Destiny, Reset | 01:27:59
We're quite a way into January already, but there's still enough of 2014 left for us to talk about all the games we're excited for this year. There really are quite a lot. Too many to list in fact. The theme of Survivalism and application of VR technology seems to feature quite heavily though and there are a refreshing lack of sequels come to think of it. If you were just looking forward to the next installment of Assassin's Creed and another Call of Duty, then prepare to have your mind blown in this exhaustive and extraneous, crystal ball toting Game DumpCAST look into the future. Well, 2014 anyway... 29 Jan 2014 | #14 State of Decay, The Walking Dead | 00:41:43
On this week’s show we talk about what went down at the recent Steam Dev Days event in Seattle, where Valve revealed their partnership with Oculus VR, showed off a new iteration of their Steam Controller and sent everyone who attended home with a shiny new Steam Machine. The lucky bastards :S On the subject of unholy alliances, we also use the news of Undead Labs signing an exclusivity agreement with Microsoft to wax lyrical about the awesome proof-of-concept that was State of Decay and chat about the latest installments of Telltale's 'A Wolf Among Us' and 'The Walking Dead' episodic adventures. 03 Feb 2014 | #15 Skyrim, The Secret World, Republique | 00:44:26
On this week’s Game DumpCAST we finally get to talk about all those games we were playing over the Christmas Break! Or in some cases simply modding, such is the case with Skyrim, which it seems is not only capable of sucking up countless hours with gameplay, but also making it look pretty too! We also get into some VR Air Hockey with Shufflepuck Cantina, some VR driving with Assetto Corsa and some VR first person puzzling with free Half Life 2 Mod, Estranged: Act 1. Then there’s the non-subscription MMO, The Secret World and at long last, the first episode of the crowd-funded AAA iOS effort, Republique. Check. It. Out. 27 Jul 2020 | #NOTe3 Part 3: Ghost of Tsushima, Watch Dogs: Legion, Far Cry 6 & more! | 01:01:23
There weren't any dancing pandas at this year's Ubisoft 'Forward' online event the other week, but they made up for it with some 'actual' gameplay (finally) of the imminent Assassin's Creed Valhalla and the surprise reveal of a new Far Cry game! And since we've all been stuck at home for the most part, both Rob & Will have been charging through Suckerpunch's Ghost of Tsushima, so have much to share about that. 10 Feb 2014 | #16: Star Citizen, Early Access & Beyond | 00:55:59
On this week’s show we talk about the crowdfunding success (madness?) of the massively multiplayer space-sim first person shooter behemoth that will one day be Star Citizen, the pros and cons of early access and why it's worth actually playing Beyond: Two Souls instead of just watching it all on YouTube. All this and actually not a whole lot more on this week's Game DumpCAST... 17 Aug 2020 | The Last of Us Part II - Spoiler Special | 00:33:33
We've been holding this one back a bit to give everyone a proper chance to play it, because naughty dog's long awaited follow up isn't exactly something you can marathon through. It's relentlessly bleak, torturously long-winded, but also probably the best game anyone will play this year, or decade even. So here's Will & Rob spoiling the absolute shit out of it for Marcus, who kindly volunteered to act as audience surrogate. Enjoy... or if perhaps you are still intending to play this game, please turn back now before it's too late... 17 Feb 2014 | #17 The Last of Us Spoiler Special | 00:39:38
So we figured that now the first (and last) DLC for The Last of Us has been released it would be a good time to talk about Naughty Dog's masterpiece in greater detail. This has nothing to do with Rob having only just finished it. Honest. It goes without saying that there are spoilers right from the start, so please don't listen to this unless you've already finished this excellent excellent game. 24 Feb 2014 | #18: Flappy Bird, Evolve, The Order 1886 | 00:32:42
On this week’s show we discuss the end (as we know it) of Bioshock Developers, Irrational Games and that Flappy Bird Fiasco before looking at a couple of upcoming games whose embargoes have now lifted: first up there’s the multiplayer-focussed Evolve, from the creators of Left 4 Dead, Turtle Rock Studios, which pits 4 players against a single player-controlled monster. Then there’s Playstation 4 exclusive, The Order 1886, which promises to meld CGI and real-time gameplay like never before. We also have a new release date for the next Wolfenstein game and even word of the next installment of the Doom franchise… all this and more in another news-packed Game DumpCAST! We also have Jon Marson from our sister show, the TV DumpCAST, filling in for Iain this week. 24 Sep 2020 | #NOTe3 Part 4: PS5 & Xbox Series X Launch Details, Wasteland 3, Among Us, Carrion & more! | 01:06:54
Sorry for our tardiness this month, but we were dearly holding on for some more information on the next gen console launches before we recorded and Sony weren't that forthcoming until last week! On this episode we're finally talking prices, release dates and which platform might have the brightest future. Last minute plot-twists ahoy! Also Will & Rob have been dabbling in a bit of Wasteland 3, Marcus has had his finger on the pulse of Among Us and collectively we've all fallen for Devolver's devious hype plan, the fiends... 03 Mar 2014 | #19 Titanfall, The Elder Scrolls Online | 00:49:46
Another Iain-less show this week, but one that has Jon on again, this time to talk about the Titanfall and Elder Scrolls Online Betas (Spoiler: One of them is a day one purchase and one of them might be not - can you guess which it is?). Pat's also been delving into the incredibly lucrative and now zombie-less early access hit, Rust. There's also plenty of hilarity to be had from the 'Game-Jam-Conceived' Surgeon Simulator 2013 and Rob's been working though his The Last of Us withdrawals with the Left Behind DLC... all this and maybe a tiny bit more in this week's Game DumpCAST You can listen to more of Jon's work at http://www.spreaker.com/show/tv_dumpcast or follow him on twitter @wobblyjon To Check out other shows in the Collection visit: http://barkerpodcasts.webs.com Including TV DumpCAST: http://www.spreaker.com/show/tv_dumpcast All views and opinions expressed in this podcast are solely those of The Game DumpCAST. 19 Oct 2020 | Star Wars Squadrons and our highlights of the generation! | 01:10:25
With the next generation of videogame consoles imminent, we thought we'd take some time to reflect on some of the more notable events of the past 7ish years. The highs, the lows and the outright weird. In other news, Rob remembered that Star Wars Squadrons is the game he's been waiting for forever... 17 Mar 2014 | #20: BAFTAs, Arkham Knight, Watch Dogs | 00:46:57
On this week’s show Rob and Patrick are joined by fellow game-dumper, Paul Barke to talk about some of the latest and greatest bits of videogame-related news on the planet, kicking off with the recent Bafta Winners. There’s also mention of the newly announced Batman: Arkham Knight, a new release date for Watch Dogs and that obviously purely coincidental Xbox One price drop on the eve of Titanfall. There’s also some VR News in the form of a PS4 Headset rumoured to be revealed at GDC, which may well have already happened by the time you read/listen to this. 27 Nov 2020 | Playstation 5, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Watch Dogs Legion & more! | 01:10:59
While the world might be at a standstill, that hasn't made any difference to videogames, especially in a year that sees the launch of a new generation of consoles. One of which, we've finally got our sticky paws on. Well, Rob has at least. Not to be outdone however, Will's been holding up the ubisoft fort, having played a signifant amount of both Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Watch Dogs Legion. Two games that have been very much on our minds for the past year or so. And isn't it a blessed relief to have so much virtual fun in these perilously harsh times. There is only one landmark yet to come in 2020 and you can bet we'll be back to discuss that particular title before the end of the year, assuming Cyberpunk 2077 will actually come out!?! Paul catches us up on what's going in the world of petrol-fest, Project CARS and Rob has a round-up of all the mobile games that have been keeping him busy on his daily commute. 30 Mar 2014 | #22: GDC, Titanfall & a bit of a rant... | 00:31:08
Bit of an odd one this week. We weren't able to record a proper show, but we did get a report from Tim Diggle about his time at GDC in San Francisco the other week. Oh and Iain and Rob played some Titanfall and some of the audio from that is on here too. Apologies for the rant at the start, but it had to be done. Normal service should resume next week... Enjoy!
