17 Nov 2022Episode 248 - Understanding Our Stories in the Shadow of Pain with Joan Kelley01:39:12

How can we begin to process our stories after a life-altering loss? Where can hope be found in the midst of insufferable pain? How do we connect the dots and find God's hand in our lives when suffering overshadows?

For Joan Kelley, those were difficult questions to answer after losing her teenage son, Will, to cancer. Yet, she found healing through looking at her life and the ways God has shown up, even in her worst pain. By going back in her own story, she has since been able to help walk alongside others in theirs by offering a listening ear or spiritual direction. And she has used what pain has taught her to bring hope and healing to those she encounters. While Joan knows she doesn't have all the answers, her journey has brought incredible lessons of faith, endurance, and how God can be trusted even in our darkest seasons.

In this episode, Davey sits down to talk with Joan about how everyone can use their unique wirings to bring hope to the hurting, why we have to make the time for our grief, and how processing your own story is pivotal in whatever healing path you are on.

Whatever the loss, Joan's story reminds us that we can all get to the place in our grief where we can still dare to hope.

29 Aug 2024Episode 340 - Nothing is Wasted Book: More to the Story with Kristi Blackburn01:26:28

What does redemption look like in our stories of pain and suffering? How do we step into the story of someone we love and hold space for them? For Nothing is Wasted co-founder, Kristi Blackburn, learning to be a place of refuge and healing for her husband, Davey, and son, Weston, years after they lost their first wife and mom, Amanda, has been no simple task. In the messiness of grief, blending families, and navigating the impact of trauma, Kristi has had to step into the call of being a wife and mother without a manual but only the grace of God to guide her. She has had to learn how to do it all from a place of faith and not fear, while also tending to her own story of shame, loss and grief. While it hasn't been easy, she has found that in the midst of it all, God has given her the strength and wisdom she has needed to be a source of healing and help to both Davey and Weston as they continue to put the pieces together of their shattered hearts. In this heartwarming episode, Davey and Kristi have the opportunity to share candidly about what it has been like to step into each other's pain, the difference between redemption and restoration, and how to parent kids who have faced the unimaginable. If you've ever struggled to see God's redemption plan play out in your story, this conversation will show you that perhaps it already has and you just haven't recognized it yet.

27 Jun 2024Episode 331 - The Power of Personal Revival with Lisa Whittle01:09:41

How do we live a more connected life with Jesus when this world offers so many distractions? What would it look like for individuals to experience personal revival in their own faith that could spark revival in other's lives as well? For author, podcaster and Bible teacher Lisa Whittle, it was her own journey towards seeking more of God that led her to write about it. As a woman in ministry, Lisa has seen and faced many challenges, but through it all, she was able to find God more and more. By asking God for her own personal revival, Lisa began to see all the ways the enemy of her soul attempts to keep her from it. From people pleasing and anxiety to social media and the celebrity culture that has infiltrated the Christian spaces she has been in, Lisa knows that there are many things that can derail her from living out of a whole hearted devotion to God. It is why she decided to update and re-release her book, I Want God: How to Love Him with Your Whole Heart and Revive Your Soul. As God continued to draw her own heart into personal revival, she realized the message she wrote years ago had even more relevance for our current culture. In this episode, Aubrey and Lisa talk about the challenges many women face in ministry and how to overcome them, what personal revival looks like in both seasons of normalcy and seasons of pain, and how the fear of man can keep us from the freedom God so longs to give us. If you've ever desired to experience more of God in your own heart and life but don't know how, this conversation will teach you the simplicity of loving Him and reviving your soul in the process.

21 Mar 2024Episode 316 - Even If He Doesn't with Kristen LaValley01:07:23

What do we do with the hard questions that arise from the pain we are feeling? How do we acknowledge our fears and our doubts while holding onto our faith? For author Kristen LaValley, the process of moving from a formulaic faith that believed God wouldn't allow pain if she did all the right things into a genuine, messy belief and understanding of God came through several seasons of suffering. From losing her and her husband's ministry position and faith community to witnessing a murder, the loss of a baby and a very traumatic birth experience with her twins, Kristen had to untangle her belief in a God that neatly healed and fixed every pain into the true nature of who God was and how so often it is His presence that He offers us in our heartbreaks. Now, Kristen and her husband help others walking through questions in their faith and spiritual wounds by giving them the same space to ask and process that they received from others in their journey. In this insightful conversation, Davey talks with Kristen about how what we believe about God shapes how we experience suffering, the way in which suffering shapes who we believe God to be and why wrestling is so important in moving from a transactional relationship with the Lord into a true and authentic one. If you've ever struggled with questions about God's goodness in the seasons of your difficulties, this episode will help normalize the grappling and undoing we all have to do about our beliefs about God in order to learn who He truly is.

In 2015, the small rural town of Austin, Indiana became the epicenter of the worst drug-fueled HIV outbreak in US history. William sits down with Davey to share some of how he found purpose in walking with people through life’s toughest trials and working to repair the broken systems at the root of this pain.

11 Apr 2024Episode 319 - Don't Give Up Just Yet with Nick Connolly01:09:24

How often have you found yourself ready to give up? What do we do when it feels too hard to keep going? Pastor and author Nick Connolly knows what it is like to be ready to quit. As a pastor, he has faced challenges that have made him second guess his calling. Even in the midst of writing and launching his book, Don't Give Up Just Yet: Choosing Persistence in a World of Overwhelming Resistance, he found himself experiencing panic attacks and unrelenting anxiety for the first time in his life. It was through his own personal struggles that he began to consider the importance of persistence when faced with resistance to what God has asked of us. In this conversation, Davey and Nick talk about what it looks like to not give up, the way spiritual attacks can impact us, and how to be authentic with all while choosing wisely with whom we are most vulnerable. 03 Oct 2024Episode 345 - Suffering and the Gospel with Paul David Tripp01:10:16

What does the gospel have for us in our suffering? How do we apply theological truths in our pain? Author and Bible teacher Paul David Tripp had a deep understanding of theology, especially when it came to pain and suffering. It wasn't until he walked through a season of physical suffering and chronic fatigue that those understandings he had in his mind became embedded into his heart. Through the difficulties and challenges of a medical condition that forever changed his capacity and revealed his limitations, Paul learned how the hope of the gospel can meet us in even the most painful days. His journey through that season and the lessons God taught him along the way are chronicled in his book Suffering: Gospel Hope When Life Doesn't Make Sense. In this conversation, Eric sits with Paul to discuss how suffering can lead to a deeper trust in Christ, the role prayer plays in our pain, and how God will bring a new level of understanding of theological truths when we are hurting. 03 Nov 2022Episode 245 - Special Release: Trial Update Part 1 with Davey Blackburn01:00:40

If you've been around here at Nothing is Wasted, you probably know the story of how we came to be as a ministry. It was after his own pain to purpose journey in which Davey Blackburn lost his wife, Amanda, and their unborn child in a tragic home invasion that God birthed this idea of a ministry that walked others through whatever pain they faced.

In this special two-part conversation, Davey sits down with Aubrey to discuss what the past few months have been like as the legal side of their journey came to a close with the trial and sentencing of the perpetrator of Amanda's murder.

For many, it may come as a surprise that this part of their story is just now happening, seven years after that fateful day that forever changed Davey's life. And yet, for the Blackburn's and Amanda's family, the significance of the number seven, a number that means completion in Scripture, is more than a mere coincidence. In spite of all the suffering they've endured, the timing is just another reminder that God has been with them every step of the way. And as this chapter in their journey comes to a close, a new one is beginning.

In Part 1 of this two-part episode, Davey recounts what he encountered during the trial, how he learned to find closure outside of the courtroom, and the way the picture of his earthly father helped him deeply understand the posture of His heavenly one in the depths of his pain.

Whether you've been following Davey's journey since the beginning or if you are new to the Nothing is Wasted family, this episode will remind you that even in the complicated parts of our story, God is ever so near.

30 Apr 2020Episode 110 - Kelly Streiff01:03:49

Kelly Streiff’s story of pain isn’t one where she’s already walked through grief and healed and overcame. Those stories are powerful, but that isn’t the one Kelly has to share right now. When she sat down with Davey to tell her story, Kelly was only six months out from losing her baby daughter Imogen. While walking through still fresh pain and grief, Kelly shares her story and talks about what it looks like to have faith not just on the mountaintop after the valley, but even in the middle of it.

06 Jan 2022Episode 202 - Gracie Parrish01:40:30

WIDOWHOOD SERIES PART TWO

Every partner of someone with an especially dangerous job has to face the reality that there is always a chance their husband or wife won’t make it home one day. But no amount of theoretical expectations could have prepared Gracie Parrish for the day when two uniformed police officers showed up at her door to deliver the last piece of news she would have ever wanted. Suddenly left as a single mother of two young children, Gracie found herself on a difficult journey that she could never have expected. To continue our widowhood series, Gracie sits down with Davey and Kristi to share her story of loss, grief, redemption, and newfound purpose.

09 Mar 2023Episode 262 - Surrendering Your Plans For God’s Plans with Marcy Gregg01:12:00

Imagine waking up in a hospital room and finding out that you no longer remembered the last thirteen years of your life. Think about the fear, the confusion and the uncertainty that would set in when you realized you had just been in a coma and parts of your life were no longer in your memory. Most of us have never experienced something as traumatic as that and can hardly imagine such a scene playing out in real life. But for artist Marcy Gregg, this was her story. After complications from giving birth led to her being in a coma, she awoke to a life she didn't know. Thirteen years of her memories were gone and she didn't recognize her husband or her kids. In order to be released from the hospital, she pretended that her memory was coming back. But once home, the weight of such a big secret began to overwhelm her and she turned to alcohol to cope with her anxiety and pain. Pretty soon, she found herself struggling with alcohol addiction, but through a divine intervention, the Lord spoke to her and she walked away from numbing her pain with alcohol. Her life has been met with more challenges, but through it all, she has chosen to trust God with her life and her story. Like a painting in progress, she has seen God as the ultimate artist who is not done yet with the canvas of her life. In this episode, Davey talks with Marcy about how to surrender in the face of uncertainty, choosing to live differently when life takes us on an unexpected path, and why trust requires us to lean in. Marcy's story is unique, but through it, you'll find a reminder in your own to trust God with the plan He has for your life, even when you can't see the whole picture quite yet.

18 Nov 2021Episode 195 - Mitchel Lee01:02:33

What do we do when life doesn’t go the way we think it should? What do these seasons mean for our faith? When Mitchel Lee was stepping into professional ministry, he thought he had a clear path ahead in life. After all, he was serving God full time. Certainly everything would go right, wouldn’t it? But Mitchel soon learned, as so many of us do, that life rarely goes the way we plan. When disappointments and trials come our way, what does that mean for our faith? Mitchel sits down with Davey to share his story and how he’s found a deeper, more authentic faith by embracing the idea that God is still good even if life lets us down.

03 Sep 2020Episode 129 - Os Hillman01:05:21

Failure is not something any of us want. It is consistently ranked as one of the most common fears, but it is also a fact of life. None of us make it through with a perfect record. That’s something that Os Hillman learned the hard way. After not one but two failed marriages and going from thriving in business to being broke, Os had been through failure and adversity on a tremendous scale. What Os learned is that God was in those trials, and that are lessons to be learned from all of our failures if we are willing to listen. Os sits down with Davey to share a bit of his story and the lessons he’s learned the hard way on his journey.

09 Nov 2020Episode 139 - Dr. Anita Phillips pt. 200:53:50

If the last several months have taught us anything, it’s that the racial tensions we read about in our history textbooks aren’t limited to the pages of the past. The pain that our black brothers and sisters have felt at the hands of white America hasn’t gone away, and ignoring it isn’t going to make it any better. In the second part of this powerful conversation, Dr. Anita Phillips shares with Davey about how racism has never truly left our culture or our churches, and how the body of Christ can begin the long, hard process of moving towards true unity, justice, and reconciliation.

14 Oct 2021Episode 190 - Kelly Olson01:12:14

Many of us would love nothing more than to forget the worst things that have happened to us. We want to keep them secret, to pretend that if we don’t talk or even think about them then maybe they didn’t ever really happen. We try to replace redemption with forgetfulness, and end up carrying pain that goes unhealed for far too long as a result. This was Kelly Olson’s story when she experienced a sexual assault as a freshman in college. Kelly kept her pain quiet for years, until one day she learned firsthand the power of a shared story. Now Kelly makes it her mission to help others experience the same kind of healing that she did. Kelly sits down with Davey to share her story and what she’s learned about the true meaning of redemption along the journey.

15 Feb 2024Episode 311 - Incurable Faith with Andrea Herzer01:23:04

What do we do when there is no cure for our pain? How do we live with joy and thanksgiving when our physical reality is a chronic condition? For author Andrea Herzer, learning to find joy in her chronic pain and incurable diagnoses was a feat. While her mind longed to be grateful, her physical condition made it seem impossible. And yet through her journey with chronic pain, cancer, and an accident, she was able to see God's kindness to her in the middle of her literal aches. Learning to rely on others and keeping her faith when God doesn't heal has been a struggle and yet through it, she has experienced more and more of the Lord's goodness in her life. It was through her own story that she was able to take the lessons God was teaching her and write Incurable Faith: 120 Devotions of Lasting Hope for Lingering Health Issues. In this conversation with Eric, Andrea shares how to hold on to your faith when God doesn't answer your prayers in the way you wish He would, where Jesus can be found in our physical pain, and why we can't expect medical professionals to be our saviors. If you're experiencing any form of suffering that is chronic in nature, this episode will remind you that God gives us unimaginable strength in our greatest weaknesses.

23 Jan 2020Episode 96 - Terry Wardle01:12:41

Terry Wardle’s upbringing was not an easy one. Growing up impoverished in rural America, young Terry watched his family struggle through an unbelievable amount of disfunction. Crime, violence, and death became staples of his life, and this exposure to things that no young child should see made a lasting impact. Years later, all these hurts bubbled up to the surface. Terry had a successful ministry, but the unresolved pain in his life had left him in a dark place. It was only when he began to intentionally confront this years-old hurt that Terry began to find healing. Terry sits down with Davey to share some of his story and how he’s teaching others how to heal well from old wounds.

18 May 2023Episode 272 - The Power of Discipleship with Preston Perry01:25:37

What does it look like to grow in your faith when you came from an environment that contradicted so many of the things of God? How do you become a follower of Jesus after experiencing a childhood riddled with so much trauma and pain? For Preston Perry, growing up in the inner city and facing so many challenges from being fatherless and the collective pain of a community in crisis, Preston struggled to truly know God. As a young person, he found himself entrenched in street life, dealing drugs and watching so many around him succumb to the ills of gangs and crime. It was through being discipled by a friend who grew up in a similar environment and yet was so different from the life they both knew, that God became real to him. The power of that relationship was pivotal in changing Preston's life and leading him to Christ. Since then, Preston and his wife, Jackie, have devoted their lives to ministry. Preston is a speaker and apologist who has been able to take his experiences and speak to people who grew up in a similar context as he did as well as widen the Evangelical Christian perspective on topics like justice. In this episode, Davey sits down with Preston to discuss how our environment can shape our worldview, the way to reach those in communities that are different than our own, the power of discipleship in leading others to Jesus and how to fight for holiness in marriage after stories of trauma. Even if your life experiences are different, Preston's story is such a profound reminder of God's power in all of our pain and mess and how redemption can come after our trauma.

04 Jan 2021Episode 148 - Pain to Purpose Certified Guides01:06:31

When we go through trials in our lives, it can be hard to know what to do next. We want to make it through this dark season, and to make our pain mean something, but we’re not sure how. That’s the heartbeat behind Nothing Is Wasted Ministries, and it’s part of why we created the Pain to Purpose Course. But we’ve found that walking through the course by yourself isn’t always the easiest, or the most helpful. We heal better in community, and this course is no exception. That’s why we’re launching our new Pain to Purpose Certified Guide program, to help match you with someone who knows what you’re going through and can help you through difficult seasons.

To celebrate the launch of this new program, Davey and Aubrey are joined by Ken Roberts and several of our Pain to Purpose Certified Guides to talk about what they’ve learned in their own Pain to Purpose journeys and how helpful it can be to have someone walk alongside you in yours.

12 Sep 2024Episode 342 - Finding Hope in the Mystery of Suffering with Ellie Holcomb01:03:03

How do we hold onto faith in a world full of so much suffering and sorrow? Where do we find hope in the mystery of all the pain? For Recording Artist and Author Ellie Holcomb working out her faith through song has always been the way God has invited her into the hope that exists in suffering. After walking through several years of losses and devastating heartache in the lives of those she loved, Ellie began to notice the ways in which so much of the goodness and joy in her life came birthed out of the pain. It is through music that she often shares her own wrestlings and the ways in which God allows us each the opportunity to experience hope in the canyons of the most difficult times. Her latest album, All of My Days, are Psalms set to music that have given her hope in the pain and suffering of this life. In this episode, Davey and Ellie consider how we can get comfortable with the questions and doubts that arise out of our pain, where we can see God in the valleys of life and the incredible invitation to hope in the midst of it all. If you've ever struggled to understand the mystery so present in pain, this conversation will be a balm to your soul as you are reminded that God is big enough to handle every question, every doubt, and every frustration we have in our most difficult days.

04 Jun 2024Episode 327 - Bonus Episode: The Good Gift of Weakness with Eric Schumacher00:54:06

What do we do with our frailties? How can we begin to see God's gift in our weakness? For author, pastor, and Nothing is Wasted guest host, Eric Schumacher, reframing his perspective on the areas where he was weak took some time. Struggling with his own imperfections and insecurities, God began to reveal to him that the very things that made him feel weak were exactly what God wanted to work through and reveal His strength. As Eric began to deep dive into the theological implications of weakness and where it can be found throughout human history in Scripture, he was able to see the incredible gift our weaknesses can be. It was through that study and his own personal journey that Eric wrote his latest book, The Good Gift of Weakness: God’s Strength Made Perfect in the Story of Redemption. In this episode, Davey and Eric talk about why God works through our weakness, how to find our value and worth in Jesus instead of our accomplishments, and the various types of weakness we face. If you've ever felt defeated by your own weakness, this conversation will encourage you that in whatever weakness you feel, God is at work in incredible ways to show you His strength.

06 May 2021Episode 166 - Robb Hiller01:05:05

No matter how successful we are in life, all of us are just one piece of bad news away from our entire world shifting into something we can’t imagine. That’s what Robb Hiller experienced when he was diagnosed with not just one form of cancer, but three. With his prognosis extremely negative and unsure how much longer he’d be alive, Robb embarked on the most difficult journey of his life. But in the middle of the pains of cancer treatment and the fear of death, Robb learned lessons about the nature of God and all of our lives that couldn’t be learned except through the fires of unbelievable pain. Robb sits down with Davey to share some of his story and what he learned about how we can thrive by helping others even in the midst of our own valleys.

07 Jan 2021Episode 149 - Jessica Ronne01:06:22

Our families are among the greatest gifts we can receive in life, but with that gift comes a risk. When pain strikes among these people who are so close to us, it hits us especially hard. Jessica Ronne knows this all too well. When her second child was born with severe special needs, it seemed like that was more trial than anyone should have to endure. Jessica’s journey, however, was just getting started. Only a few years later, Jessica’s husband lost his battle against a brain tumor, and Jessica found herself as a single mother to three children. Through this unbelievable pain, Jessica found herself closer to God than ever before. Jessica sits down with Davey to share her incredible story of struggle, loss, remarriage, blending families, and more.

20 May 2021Episode 168 - Lysa Terkeurst00:47:51

For most of us, forgiveness is a tricky subject. We know in our minds that it’s the right thing to do, and we probably try to forgive minor offenses as best we can. But when we are wronged in a much larger sense, forgiveness feels like the last thing we want to do. Lysa Terkeurst is all too familiar with that feeling. Not only is she a hugely successful ministry leader and bestselling author, but Lysa has walked through incredible amounts of hurt in her own life. Through this journey, Lysa has learned what forgiveness really is and how it unlocks the door for us to heal from our own wounds regardless of whether or not we are reconciled with those that wounded us. Lysa sits down with Davey to share some of what she’s learned about forgiveness and reconciliation, and the ways they factor into bringing healing in each of our stories.

24 Aug 2020BONUS - LaMorris Crawford Discusses Racial Reconciliation01:11:27

We are living in times unlike any in our country’s history. In the months following the killing of George Floyd, nearly every eye in the country has been on the unfolding story of racial tension. In the wake of this tragedy and the ongoing conversations about it, Davey was joined by LaMorris Crawford to discuss the topic of racial reconciliation and what each of us can do in this unprecedented moment in history.

02 May 2024Episode 322 - Letting Life In Again After Loss with Aubrey Sampson01:15:54

How do you keep choosing to truly live after losing one of the closest people in your life? What does it look like to show up when you're feeling the depths of grief? For our Nothing is Wasted podcast co-host, author, pastor and speaker, Aubrey Sampson, learning how to allow life to come in again through the cracks of her pain after losing her best friend, Jenn, was difficult. Finding her way through the grief without having the person she could always process pain with felt impossible. And yet, through it all, Aubrey began to see how even in one of her greatest losses, there were moments where she could keep death from winning by choosing to find joy and life in what was in front of her. It was there that she could begin to see God's redemption in her heartache and fight back against darkness. In this vulnerable conversation, Davey sits down with Aubrey to discuss how redemption often doesn't look like we think it will, how to begin to move forward after losing someone you love, and what to do when God's presence feels more like absence in your pain. If you've ever experienced the loss of a best friend or have wondered how to even begin to live again in grief, this episode will inspire you to keep choosing to show up fully in the one, precious life you've been given.

17 Oct 2024Episode 347 - Tired of Being Tired with Jess Connolly01:05:48

How do we experience true rest in a culture that demands striving and encourages fatigue? What does it even look like to live from a place of rest instead of burnout and exhaustion like most people around us do? For author, pastor, speaker, and mom of four, Jess Connolly, these were the questions she had to wrestle with in the face of all the demands coming at her from her various roles. When life hit a fever pitch and she seemed to reach a breaking point in every way, she knew that she needed more than some sort of watered down self-care answer. She needed to find a way to truly live from a place of trust in the goodness of God to provide and carry her through the noise and speed of life around her. It was through her own journey of figuring out how to deal with the soul-deep exhaustion that she decided to take others along in her latest book, Tired of Being Tired: Receive God’s Realistic Rest for Your Soul-Deep Exhaustion. In this episode, Aubrey and Jess talk about how difficult it is to find rest in our modern culture, the different ways fatigue can show up, and how to lead in our pain and grief. If you are tired of being tired--mentally, physically and spiritually--this conversation will show you that you don't need the world's false versions of rest, but you need an encounter with the one who offers you true rest in the depths of your being.

10 Mar 2022Episode 211 - Learning to Lean into our Pain with Jackie Hill Perry01:00:00

There are certain issues that the church is silent on too often. Whether it’s from fear of controversy or just not knowing what to say, it’s all too easy for many Christians to be afraid of talking about topics that can seem “messy.” Jackie Hill Perry is not one of those people. Having dealt with sexual abuse, pornography, gender confusion, same-sex attraction, and more, Jackie is well versed in these topics that many Christians fear to talk about. And as an author, speaker, poet, and more, Jackie has found herself in a unique position to speak up about these important issues. 25 Aug 2022Episode 235 - The Heartbreak and the Healing with Blanca01:13:15

Sometimes life can break your heart after one unexpected tragedy. But, what about when circumstances seems to break your heart all throughout your story? How do you find healing when it seems heartache is woven into the fabric of your life? For Christian recording artist, Blanca, it felt like her whole life was marred by heartbreak. As a child, she was a victim of sexual abuse. As an adult, she lost both her parents and went through a devastating divorce. Finding healing in life when it seemed like the pieces were shattered has been difficult, but through her journey with the Lord, through her music and with the help of a counselor, Blanca has begun to experience healing from her wounds. In this episode, Davey sits down with Blanca to talk about facing the pain in order to heal, the value in sharing your healing process with others, and how creativity can be a tool God uses to mend a broken heart. Healing is never an easy endeavor, but Blanca's story is proof that God is in the business of binding up the wounds of the brokenhearted.

02 Nov 2023Episode 296 - Stumbling Toward Eternity with Josh White01:25:15

How do we move towards the cross when our journey is full of detours, distractions and divergence from the abundance and freedom Christ offers us? For author, musician and pastor Josh White, learning to navigate the terrain of his past wounds while pastoring wasn't a linear course. When the hurt from growing up with an alcoholic father began to bleed into his life and ultimately his ministry, Josh went down the difficult road of examining himself and his story. Through his own personal reflection upon his life and upon the crucifixion of Christ, Josh wrote Stumbling Toward Eternity: Losing & Finding Ourselves in the Cross of Jesus, as a way to better understand the freedom that the cross offers to each of us. In this episode, Davey talks to Josh about why we are seeing leaders fall to scandal, how to notice pinpoints of God's grace, and where to even begin in the mess of learning to forgive those who have deeply wounded us. This conversation is an encouragement to anyone who has ever felt like their spiritual walk was more of a stumble than a climb upward as they heal and grow in greater understanding of the work Jesus did upon the cross for each of us.

17 Aug 2023Episode 285 - Reflections on Family, Ethnicity, and the Sacred Work of Belonging with Tasha Jun01:14:18

How do you navigate living between two completely different worlds? How do you honor the culture of a parent while being a part of another culture that doesn't always do the same? For author Tasha Jun, learning to love and embrace the culture of her Korean mother while finding a place to belong in American culture left her feeling caught between two worlds at times. Being biracial, Tasha struggled with a sense of belonging, but even more so, with her own identity in feeling too much and not enough at times. Learning to love who God made her, including the different parts of her culture, helped her to fully experience the love of God in the messy middle of understanding and embracing who she was. As she became a mother, she saw the sacred gift in her own heritage and give that gift to her children. In this raw and honest conversation, Davey and Tasha discuss what it is like to feel "othered," how writing can be a tool for healing, and seeing God meet you in your identity while learning to grieve the ways we feel like we don't belong. If you've ever felt like an outsider in any sense, this episode will encourage you that you belong in the beautiful kingdom tapestry that God is weaving together and your unique makeup is exactly what God intended.

21 Oct 2021Episode 191 - Michael Jr.01:00:57

We often say that pain is the common denominator of life. But while that is true, there is another common denominator: laughter. Even in the middle of the darkest seasons, we all find ourselves laughing at times. It’s a part of the human experience, just like pain. Michael Jr. knows this firsthand. As a comedian, his job is to make people laugh. But Michael’s comedy is far from an escape that tries to pretend that pain doesn’t exist. Through his own painful experiences and the stories of others that he’s witnessed, Michael has learned how laughter can reach us in our pain and bring newfound hope. Michael sits down with Davey to share some of his story and the wisdom he’s gained along the journey.

22 Jun 2023Episode 277 - Hope when it Hurts with Kristen Wetherell01:14:24

How do you keep trusting God when life doesn't get perfectly "fixed"? How can you begin to see God's glory move in your story within all its imperfections? For author Kristen Wetherell, chronic pain became a debilitating reminder that her plans and her life were not fully under her control. It was through a Lyme disease diagnosis and the subsequent pain and challenges she faced that God began to reveal to her how important it was to live a surrendered life before the Lord and see His grace and compassion in the midst of suffering. In her book, Hope When it Hurts (co-authored with previous guest, Sarah Walton, Episode #274), she encourages those battling any sort of pain, to see the hope God offers in our aches and hold onto Him when we want to let go. In this episode, Davey sits down with Kristen to unpack how we can begin to discern the will of God in our lives, what it looks like to walk by faith in our suffering, and the importance of leaning into others when we can't stand on our own. With profound wisdom, Kristen points out how God remains faithful to us when our story takes unexpected twists and turns and how we can keep trusting Him even though life unfolds in unexpected ways.

06 Oct 2022Episode 241 - Learning from Leadership Pain with Glenn Burris01:26:56

With so much going against leaders today, how can one learn to push through the hardships and challenges and stay the course? How do you keep pressing on when discouragement, rejection, or wounds make you want to quit?

Glenn Burris has served his entire adult life in ministry. He has led churches and organizations through the ups and downs that inevitably come. He has suffered the wounds that can come from being out front. He knows how often the enemy will attempt to discourage or distract you as you answer the call God has for your life.

It was through his lifetime of service that the Lord taught him the value of humility and wholeness as he sought to lead others. With a pastoral heart, Glenn continues to guide and shepherd others with the hard won wisdom he has after seeing so much in ministries, organizations, and in life. Ultimately, Glenn has learned that circumstances can't dictate his outlook, but his trust in the Lord can.

In this episode, Davey gleans from the deep well of wisdom that Glenn shares about how to stay in ministry for the long haul, the importance to keep our eyes focused on the eternal, and how pain can be a teacher.

We are all leading in some capacity, whether in ministry, in the workplace or in our home. This conversation will equip you to keep going when life makes leading hard.

10 Oct 2024Episode 346 - Finding Hope When Life Leaves You Feeling Shattered with Kellie Bullard01:10:59

How can you find hope when life shatters before your eyes? How can you continue to believe in the goodness of God after tragedy? For young mom Kellie Bullard, she couldn't imagine how quickly life could change. In an ordinary night, her life was turned completely upside down when her husband, Alex, died in a car accident less than a mile from their home. What was once a picture perfect life was ripped apart as she was left grieving the loss of her husband with a seven week old baby and a 2 year old. But even in the midst of her greatest pain, God showed up in small and tangible ways along her journey towards healing. She wrote about the truth of her grief and what God taught her along the way in her new book, Behind My Smile: Finding Hope When Life Leaves You Feeling Shattered. In this episode, Davey talks to Kellie about what it looks like to step out in faith when life is uncertain, how we can see God in our story, and the ways in which we can help young kids through their experience of grief and loss. If you've ever experienced life changing in an instant, this conversation you show you how to see the goodness of God and find hope again amidst the shattered pieces of the life you once knew.

05 Jan 2023Episode 253 - Special Release: Vision and Purpose in Your Pain with Davey Blackburn00:59:03

After tragedy, trauma or transition, it can be hard to find vision for a way forward. Often times, our pain can cloud any idea of a future or plans besides our deepest ache. How can we start to see above the fog of what has happened to us and begin to believe that God has a greater vision for our life beyond suffering?

In this special release episode, Davey talks about the importance of vision when it comes to our pain to purpose journey as well as the God-given vision he has for Nothing is Wasted as a ministry. Get a glimpse into what you can expect in the days to come from Nothing is Wasted and how we can help you partner with God to take back your story.

Proverbs tells us that "without vision, the people perish." Without vision, we can find ourselves wrestling with doubt, fear or hopelessness. Without vision, we can believe that the heartache we are experiencing is all there is for us. 11 Jun 2020Episode 116 - Nothing Is Wasted's Third Birthday01:39:48

Three years ago last week, the Nothing Is Wasted Podcast was launched. Since then, we’ve seen more people find hope and healing than we could have ever imagined, and we are so thankful to all of you in our community for listening and sharing what God is doing in your lives through this ministry. One of the questions we get most often is “How did Nothing Is Wasted start?” So for our third birthday celebration, with thought it would be a good idea to turn things around a little bit. Davey sat down with our new co-host Aubrey Sampson to share his story of pain, loss, and healing, and how it led him to found Nothing Is Wasted Ministries.

08 Aug 2024Episode 337 -Nothing is Wasted Book: More to the Story with Daniel and Brittany Brooker00:59:08

How do you learn to feel the pain instead of just filling it? What does surrender look like when we've entered a story that we never imagined for ourselves? On this first ever live Nothing is Wasted podcast episode from the Nothing is Wasted Book Launch event, Davey and Kristi Blackburn are joined by Daniel and Brittany Brooker to discuss the messy road of healing and redemption. The Brookers know pain--having both lost a spouse at a young age while parenting small children. Their process towards healing and hope and finding one another along the way has been full of incredible joy and difficult heartaches. Finding friendship with the Blackburns, another couple who understands the impact of trauma on a marriage and children and who are also blending together a family, has been a gift in the journey of grief, loss, and redemption. In this conversation, the Blackburns and the Brookers discuss why we have to feel our pain and not just fill it, the importance of surrender in our deepest valleys, and how God gives us people along the way that can be a part of his healing plan for us. If you've ever struggled to allow yourself the opportunity to really feel the emotions that come from a loss or your unique path of suffering, this episode will help you to realize that healing cannot happen until you admit there is hurt and allow God to meet you in the messy middle of it.

Which is, in part, why it’s so interesting that his newest book is called When To Walk Away. 09 Nov 2023Episode 297 - Caring for A Loved One with Alzheimer’s with Edward Grinnan01:36:05

Warning: This episode does briefly discuss loss by suicide and may not be suitable for all listeners. How do we care for a loved one with a disease that steals their memories? How do we tend to ourselves when we are helping aging parents? For Guideposts Editor-in-Chief Edward Grinnan, these were the very questions he had to answer after his mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Edward had to learn not only how to walk through such a difficult disease, but also how to face the reality that he too might one day suffer from it. Edward went on to chronicle his own journey through his mother's illness in his latest book, A Journey of Faith: A Mother’s Alzheimer’s, A Son’s Love, and His Search for Answers. It was through his journey that he was able to see with clarity God's presence and love. In this episode, Davey talks with Edward about how telling our stories reveals who we are, the impact Alzheimer's Disease has on families and caregivers, and specific ways that caregivers can care for themselves while tending to their loved one with the disease. If you are being impacted by Alzheimer's, caring for aging parents or know someone who is, this conversation will encourage you to see how God can show up in the ways we show up for those we love.

09 Dec 2022Episode 251 - Deciding to Trust God before the Unexpected Comes with Melissa Swain01:18:18

How do you prepare yourself for loss? What do you do in the days before your world encounters a seismic shift? Can you ever truly be ready to face your greatest pain?

For Melissa Swain, nothing could fully prepare her for the unexpected loss of her husband, Chris, in 2021 but in the days long before such a tragic grief, she had made the decision to trust God no matter what. Just a few years before in 2019, her family faced the unexpected death of her brother, Aaron. In a way, the Lord used that difficult time to prepare her heart for more grief she would walk through as a widow. As Melissa wrestled through the pain of losing her sibling and then her husband, she was faced with more unexpected circumstances when the fate of her husband's almost finished manuscript laid in the hands of his publisher. Was she the one to take his work and bring it across the finish line? She did and the book they completed unexpectedly together called "Write it On Their Hearts: Practical Help for Discipling Your Kids" was not only a way to keep her connected to Chris after his death, but it also served as a means for him to continue to love and parent his children in the days that followed while helping other families as well.

In this candid conversation, Davey talks with Melissa about what it looks like to grieve well, why our pre-decisions about God are so important when it comes to preparing us for pain, and how to wait on God when you aren't sure what is next.

If you've ever wondered how you could prepare your heart for the suffering that inevitably comes this side of heaven, Melissa's hard-won wisdom will encourage you to decide who you think God is before you ever get that phone call that changes everything.

10 Jun 2021Episode 171 - Motherhood with Kristi Blackburn and Aubrey Sampson01:01:32

PARENTING SERIES PART ONE

There are few, if any, challenges as difficult and important as being a mother. From conception to adulthood, moms are tasked with raising their children, taking care of them, and making sure they grow up in a loving, safe home where they can become the best people they can be. This task is simultaneously incredibly rewarding and unimaginably challenging. Every mom knows that being a mother comes with pains and trials that none of us would ask for.

To kick off our Parenting Series, Aubrey Sampson and Kristi Blackburn sit down for a special conversation about the joys and pains of motherhood. Aubrey and Kristi’s motherhood stories are very different, but they are both intimately familiar with the challenges and pains that come with this responsibility. And more importantly, they both know how God has met them in the midst of these challenges. Aubrey and Kristi share some of their mothering stories and the wisdom they’ve learned along the way in this special conversation.

14 Apr 2022Episode 216 - How to Heal Our Racial Divide with Derwin Gray01:11:37

In a world so broken, it is no wonder that division can be seen everywhere, even within the walls of the Church. The past few years especially have shone a light on how pervasive the sin of racism still exists to this day within our communities and within the body of Christ. Through his own personal experiences and his study of God's word, former NFL player turned pastor, Derwin Gray, has a vision for how healing can come where there is so much pain when it comes to the topic of race. The early Church proves that God's desire for His people is diversity and healing our divides is possible through the power of Christ's resurrection. Davey talks with Pastor Derwin Gray about what it looks like to heal our racial divide, encouragement for those who have experienced racial trauma, how to deal with the sin of racism in our hearts and a hope for a future in which we all see the beauty in God's design. Let this conversation embolden you to become an agent of change in your church, your community, and your home.

04 Apr 2024Episode 318 - If I Don't Laugh, I'll Cry with Molly Stillman01:19:07

How can you find laughter and joy when life is so unbearably difficult? Where is joy when pain and suffering seem to be a never ending part of life? For author and podcaster Molly Stillman, learning to laugh has been balm to her soul in some of her greatest losses. Having lost her mother as a teen, inheriting a sizable inheritance only to lose it shortly after and finding herself in debt and then experiencing pregnancy losses later in life, Molly has walked through too many sorrows to count and yet, she has found a way to laugh through it all. As a trained comedian, Molly has seen the gift of humor when life feels too heavy and has used that gift to bring joy to others in the most difficult moments. Now a homesteader and ministry leader, her life has taken the most unexpected turns and yet she still can find laughter and joy in the midst of it. She writes about her story and life in her new book, If I Don't Laugh, I'll Cry: How Death, Debt, and Comedy Led to a Life of Faith, Farming, and Forgetting What I Came into This Room For. In this conversation, Aubrey sits down with Molly to discuss what it is like to look a mother at such a crucial time in a young girl's life, how to tell your story in safe spaces, and the ways that shame can keep us from bringing to light the truth of what we've been through. If you've ever wonder if it's okay to laugh when so much seems to be going wrong, this episode will encourage you that humor is a gift from God and one He often offers us in the moments of our pain to give us a little push forward towards joy and healing.

02 Feb 2023Episode 257 - Embracing the Messy and Complicated Journey of Adoption and Fostering with Jillana Goble01:25:49

Parenting is complicated whichever way you come into it. When grief and trauma are part of the equation, it can add even more layers to navigate. How do you sit in the messiness of adoption and fostering while learning to see the joys and the wins in the midst of it?

For Jillana Goble, it has been through the challenges of parenting via birth, foster care, and adoption that she has learned to welcome the invitations the Lord offers in the tensions of it all. As she said yes to the difficulties and joys, she has seen her own understanding of God and family widen in an unimaginable way. She has learned that parenting of any kind does not come with a road map or a formula with a promise, but rather it is the small, daily obediences to say yes to loving our children well in all circumstances. It is there that we begin to see God show up in places that were once thought to be irrevocably broken.

In this conversation, Davey sits down with Jillana to discuss the often complicated nature of adoption and fostering that we don't always see as well as how understanding how integrated we are-mind, body, and soul-can help us love kids who have gone through unfathomable loss and trauma and how in it all, Jesus shows up in the mess.

29 Jul 2021Episode 179 - Michelle Moore00:57:30

When we experience something traumatic, it affects far more than we often realize. We often carry our worst moments with us in both our minds and our bodies. Take Michelle Moore for example. Michelle spent much of her life carrying the trauma of watching her mother die at a young age. Entering motherhood herself caused Michelle to experience the trauma at a whole new level, but it seemed like Michelle’s worries were coming true as medical issues threatened both her life and that of her child at the same time. But through it all, Michelle learned to find God in the midst of pain, and from there to find healing from trauma both new and old. Michelle sits down with Davey to share some of her story and how she’s turned it into her purpose to help other mothers who face the same challenges they did.

13 Jun 2024Episode 329 - The Hidden Peace with Joel Muddamalle01:04:42

What does humility have to do with our suffering? How can it lead to what we long for most--peace? For theologian, author, and podcaster Joel Muddamalle, a study of humility led him to understand that processing our suffering begins with coming to the end of ourselves. As we release pride, we can experience a perspective shift that can help us better see God's presence in our pain. In his book, The Hidden Peace, Joel looks at why humility is so important when it comes to our lives as believers. Humility, he argues, is the piece that is missing when it comes to the security, strength, and confidence we all desire. In this insightful episode, Davey chats with Joel about how Christ-centered therapy can bring about healing, the connection between humility and our suffering, and how spiritual disciplines cultivate humility in our lives. If you've been searching for peace and rest in your pain, this conversation will help you find a path to it through humbling yourself before God and accepting the invitation He offers in your weakness.

22 Jul 2021Episode 178 - Kurt Willems01:02:01

Where is God in our worst moments? For those of us who have experienced some event that caused immense pain, it can be nearly impossible to see how God was present in that moment. After all, if he was there, wouldn’t he have saved us? Kurt Willems wrestled with this question as he spent his life struggling to heal from abuse he experienced as a child. Now, Kurt spends his life teaching others the things he learned in his own healing journey, and helping people to answer that question in their own stories. Kurt sits down with Davey to share some of his story and the things he’s learned about the presence of God in the midst of our sufferings.

28 Jul 2022Episode 231 - Finding Perspective in the Unexpected with Kelley Scites01:27:57

What do you do when life takes a turn you never saw coming? How can you step into a story you didn't plan for yourself? For Kelley Scites, the wrestling with those questions began after an unexpected surgery. What had promised relief from pain and a new lease on life ended with having to be put on full time oxygen. The life she had imagined as an active mom came to a screeching halt as she had to adapt to this new pace of living. But it was through this shift in her story that Kelley began to see the importance of perspective. Living focused on Heaven rather than her current circumstances began to give her hope in what at times felt hopeless. In this honest conversation, Davey sits down with Kelley to talk about why perspective is so important in circumstances that won't change, learning to trust God with the outcome of our story and choosing growth over bitterness. The details of Kelley's story may be different than yours, but they offer a rich insight into how our perspective can make or break us in the middle of hard things.

01 Jun 2023Episode 274 - Together Through the Storms with Jeff and Sarah Walton01:35:33

How do you stay afloat when it feels like waves of grief and trauma keep crashing over you? How can you keep a marriage together when it feels like everything is trying to tear you apart? For Jeff and Sarah Walton, navigating the relentless storms of a child's neurological challenges, losing a job, and the impact of Lyme disease in their home seemed impossible. It felt like the story of Job where every aspect of their lives were touched by pain and suffering. In writing their book, Together Through the Storms: Biblical Encouragements for Your Marriage When Life Hurts, they shared their own journey through the unending trials of life and how they continue to find hope in the midst of all the pain they have endured and are still facing. In this conversation, Davey sits down with Jeff and Sarah to talk about how God's Word can be a lifeline in the storms of life, why honest lament is a gift, how to endure suffering with hope as a couple and where to even begin when talking to our kids about the trials we endure as a family. If you need to be encouraged by those who are still in the storm, this episode will show you that you can ride the waves between the reality you are living and the hope you have for a better future and find Jesus right where you are.

06 Jul 2023Episode 279 - Finding Faith and Family through Foster Care with Tori Hope Petersen01:21:15

What do we do with the messages that imprint themselves on our souls from our earliest memories? How do we overcome the most difficult parts of our story when our circumstances seemingly want to make us a statistic? For author, speaker and advocate Tori Hope Petersen, growing up in an abusive home and entering the foster care system at a young age made her start to believe that her life didn't matter. But somehow in the midst of the darkest moments, God met her and showed her His unfailing love in the face of people's failures to love and care for her and that her life had a greater purpose. Since that season, Tori has written about her experience through the system in her book, Fostered: One Woman’s Powerful Story of Finding Faith and Family through Foster Care and has become an advocate for others. She is also now a mom, undoing the brokenness from her family of origin and creating a beautiful tapestry called family through biological, adoption and foster parenting. In this important conversation, Aubrey sits with Tori to discuss the questions that can come when you're wrestling through a life riddled with pain, the value of community in healing from our trauma, and how the Church can become the foundation for care and love for those in the foster care system. Whether or not your life has been touched by foster care, this episode will remind you that no matter the messages you received as a child, God's message for you is clear: you are dearly loved and none of your pain is ever wasted.
