29 Apr 2019Episode 19: How to Get Unstuck00:11:31

After a brief hiatus, Karen Cubides is back with Episode 19 of The Musician’s Guide to Being Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise. On this week’s episode, Karen gives listeners five important tools and techniques that they can use when they are feeling “stuck” at a point in their lives or careers.

1. Feel the Feelings. Many musicians and artists are accustomed to tough stages and rejection and have therefore built up walls and developed a thick skin. We need to learn to actually feel these feelings and accept that it’s okay not to feel okay. Karen suggests a technique that she uses in which she sets a timer and allows herself a short “pity party” to cry, yell, rant etc. Once the timer has ended, it’s time to get back to work and move forward with your plans and goals. We are all human and we all need a moment sometimes, otherwise emotions will pile up and result in things being blown out of proportion.

2. Reassess your health. Reassessing your physical and mental wellness can be a vital step into becoming unstuck. We need to ensure that instead of giving into our vices, we are setting ourselves up for success by evaluating how we are treating our bodies. I.e. Are we eating the best foods? Are we exercising on a regular basis.

3. Find your Passion. Find your “why”. Sometimes we need to go back to the basics and remember why we do the things that we do. Our worth comes from who we are not and not what we do. Our passion and our “why” for what we do will always be stronger than our circumstances.

4. Imagine your life without the things that stress you out. Karen reflects on working with her mentor and discusses an experiment in which, for two weeks, she tried to imagine her life without all of the things that make up her career and cause the most stress in her life as a whole. She asks if you would thrive without these things? It is easy to get bogged down and we forget why we started in the first place. This exercise could help us breath and realize that the life we have, we are living by choice. It may not be perfect but it’s what we love.

5. Reintroduce the Routine to Your Life. We all need to take a break from the grueling routine now and again but once we have recovered it is important to slowly introduce it back into your life and hit the ground running. Karen reminds us that we are the product and if we are faulty, things are not going to work out. We are the most important part of our brand!

Tony Robbins says, “Things are either growing or dying”. While this may be true, we need to remember th

09 May 2019Episode 20: From Classical Musician to Rockstar00:20:44

This week Karen talks with Nick Laufer. Trombonist for Toby Keith, Co-Founder of the Maniacal Four Trombone Quartet, COO of CAS, and her husband!

As a touring and studio musician, Karen wants to pick Nick’s brain in regards to the life style and what it has taken to get this point.

As a country musician, Nick admits that he has never listened to Country music a day in his life, outside of the music that he performs. Growing up and throughout college, Nick played consistently with a number of Top 40 cover bands in addition to classical and chamber music ensembles at a high level. He says that playing in these sorts of environments are what prepared him for playing with Toby and his band with relative ease.

One of the major differences and learning curves for Nick was that he had to learn to play with inner ear monitors. Over the years he had become accustomed to “wedges” and floor monitors that usually resulted in him feeling the need to play louder to be heard over what was being played on the speakers. Playing in these situations would quickly cause his hearing and his “chops” to be negatively affected. With inner ear monitors, he is able to hear a mix of the band and himself at the level he needs to play at a normal volume with comfort. His one drawback is that by using the innner ear monitors, you lose any acoustic sounds, but he still wouldn’t have it any other way.

Karen then asks Nick about the more theatrical aspects of his performance as a musician in Toby’s band and how these differ from his background. As classical or jazz musicians, dancing or other theatrics is never considered because it is all about the music. For larger live crowds who are drinking and dancing, they want to see that the performers on stage are having just as much fun as they are. As a “non-dancer”, it took Nick some time to find his moves, but through following the other band members, he has found a way to fit the look. He adds that they are completely aware of how ridiculous they look.

Next, Karen addresses the idea of dealing with performance anxiety in such a high stakes environment. Nick talks about preparation being sure that he knows his part down cold so that no matter what happens, he knows that he will always be playing his part well and correctly. In addition, he makes sure that he knows everyone else’s parts and how everything is supposed to fit together.

Nick then goes on to discuss his personal training as a musician and how it was the ear training that he received in college that truly made a difference for him. When he was in school, st

16 May 2019Episode 21: Optimize Your Performance With Exercise00:26:14

This week, Karen brings back our favorite chiropractor Dr. Cassie Major to talk about exercise, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), and optimizing your performance as a musician.

Dr. Cassie Major is a chiropractor whose practice is a full wellness center that teaches the five essentials of health. Exercise, Nutrition, Detox, Mindset, and Chiropractic.

To kick things off, Karen asks Dr. Cassie about exercise and how to overcome the fear of being sore or intimidated by the gym. Dr. Cassie used to weigh 200lbs as a result of a thyroid condition that caused her metabolism and energy to drop. Finding a form of exercise that worked for her was a long journey. The key is to finding what form of “exercise” works best for you. For some people, the word exercise can trigger something horrible in their brains and it can be helpful to change the word itself to something else such as “movement” or “training”. Just by changing how your verbalize what you’re doing can alter your perception of the activity itself.

Karen and Cassie have been participating in HIIT workouts on a regular basis. Studies have shown that HIIT leads to weight loss, balancing hormones, and establishing a good routine. It’s a shorter workout overall and in a study to compare HIIT to normal resistance training, researchers found that participants who took place in HIIT workouts saw equal or better results over a six week period. High Intensity Interval Training can be 4 minutes, 6 minutes, 20 minutes etc. It’s a shorter exercise that increases in intensity while increasing your heart rate and oxygen consumption. The greatest difference between HIIT and longer workouts is the Excessive Post Oxygen Consumption (EPOC). After running or doing any other lengthy workout, your body continues to burn fat for up to 4-12 hours. After HIIT, your body can continue to burn fat for up to 48 hours. Lengthy workouts are still good for your health but anyone can benefit greatly from incorporating some HIIT into their regular workouts.

Dr. Cassie then discusses that exercising at the start of your day on empty stomach is the optimal time and way to do so. Starting your day with a workout improves your day overall and causes your body to burn excess fat instead of whatever you ate just before your workout.

If you are having trouble getting started on an exercise program, the best thing to do is explore your options. Whether it’s the gym or class pass, it is important to find a community and what motivates you to show up. The best way to get started is to just start! Karen and Cassie workout toget

23 May 2019Episode 22: All About Sleep Hygiene00:06:44

On this week’s episode, Karen tells us about the importance of Sleep Hygiene and her own personal night time routine that allows her to recover and be completely rejuvenated for each and every day.

Sleep Hygiene is essentially how we incorporate our nightly routine into our daily lives and how it affects us. As musicians, performance is directly related to how we recover and if we aren’t allowing ourselves to recover, we aren’t setting ourselves up for success.

Karen’s first tip for good sleep hygiene is to make the bed for sleeping only! By eliminating electronics or other work materials, you are allowing your brain to be retrained into believing that when you are in bed, it’s time to sleep. Doing so can help with insomnia, stress and many other unhealthy habits.

The same goes for sleepwear. We should aim to have specific clothing just for sleeping. As a freelancer and business owner who works from home on a regular basis, Karen finds that it is crucial to have specific clothing for sleeping, lounging, working, exercising etc.

Making sure your physical body is ready for sleeping can also make a difference. Being aware of our eating habits and coffee intake prior to bedtime can make all the difference when it comes to settling down for the night. Karen personally prefers stretching, meditating, or journally before bedtime in order to allow her mind and body to become centered and relaxed as it prepares for the next day. It is important to provide yourself with a conducive environment to have a good night’s sleep.

Finally, knowing how much sleep you need personally and maintaining consistency in the number of hours you are allowing yourself to have each night will allow you to take care of yourself and ensure that you are refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to tackle the next day.

14 Dec 2022Episode 200: Redefining December- Holiday Edition00:24:19
25 May 2019Episode 23: Start Your Own Recording Project00:14:52

Have you ever thought about recording your own album or EP but didn’t know where to begin? This week, Karen talks to us about demystifying the process and the steps you can

take to start creating your own project. It’s important to know that you can start at anytime and that a project like this is simply a timestamp of where you are at a certain point in your life. You don’t need to be at the peak of your career and no one needs to give you permission. You have the rest of your life to create more projects but if you want to start now, do it!

The first step is creating a project like this is to have any idea and to decide what you want this to look like in the end. Will it be a tribute? Classical? New Music? Jazz? Original works? You’re only job is to find the question and answer it yourself.

The next step is to figure out the financials. Will this be a crowdfunded project or will it be something that you finance yourself? Regardless of your method, it is imperative that you know exactly how much you will actually need to fund this project. By working backwards and determining every factor, you can find a number that works for you and go from there. Karen finds that most artist tend to run out of money when it comes to marketing their project so to remember to incorporate that aspect when crunching the cost of your project. Once you have figured out the financial details, you must figure out the timeline of payments. Most projects of this sort don’t happen all at once, so it is necessary to ensure that the funds needed will be there when you need them over the span of the project.

Setting a date for the release of your project have a number of benefits. On your end, it provides a deadline and keeps you accountable for yourself and your timeline. As for your audience, it gives them a build up and time to get excited about what you’re working on and will ultimately release for their enjoyment. Having a team to work with can make something like this much more manageable and realistic. Karen has found that the bigger and the more competent the team, the better the results.

If recording in a studio is a new experience for you, it is important to prepare yourself and expect the unexpected. It can be highly stressful and uncomfortable for some to record in a studio or professional environment for the first time so you should always remember that you won’t always be perfect and that it is okay to feel vulnerable.

Finally, Karen stresses the importance of a marketing campaign. Having a clear vision and portrayal of what your audiences can expe

01 Feb 2023Episode 203: Finding Your Why Outside of Music00:37:13

Flushing out your "Why" is all about determining in this season what you think your purpose in life is; perhaps we can define it as what brings your joy and personal satisfaction, with a huge CAVEAT of  boundaries. The reason I say boundaries is I have found in my research that it’s really hard to feel like we have a clear purpose if we are doing things we think other people expect of us, or because we happen to get praise for them, or because they are easy/ come naturally. In this episode, I want to challenge the status quo around you having 1 major life “why” where you have some sort of eureka moment that gives you the “answers” and then you just go forth and conquer and everything is peachy or if you deviate or change your mind you have failed.

Let's learn and grow together in this episode as we explore and determine how to come to a "why" that best fits our current season.

Boundary Section of the Episode:
My new favorite boundary expert is a renowned licensed therapist and relationship expert Nedra Glover Tawabb. She has an amazing book on boundaries I highly recommend!

She defines boundaries as : “I define boundaries as a verbal communication or an action that you communicate to someone to feel safe, secure, and supported in a relationship”

04 Jun 2019Episode 24: Brian Garcia00:24:10

This week, Karen speaks with her long time friend and Costa Rican trumpet player, Brian Garcia about their history as friends, his career as a musician, and what he has learned in the process.

Karen and Brian first met in 2007 at Interlochen summer camp where they bonded over the struggles and challenges that they faced when it came to understanding the language and the culture that surrounded them.

Growing up in Costa Rica, Brian loved music and the trumpet and fondly looks back at the days he would get to go to the music store and scour the shelves for hours looking for CD’s of his favorite orchestras and musicians. Once arriving in the US for the Interlochen Arts Summer Program, he quickly realized how many resources he suddenly had at his disposal and how common it was for those surrounding him to take these resources for granted. He found that the environment at Interlochen was an explosion of creativity and that everyone around him was just as inspired and motivated as he was.

After graduating from the Interlochen Arts Academy, Brian attended Lynn University in Florida for his Bachelors, then SMU in Texas for his Masters, then returned back to Lynn for a Performance Certificate. Brian is now in the process of pursuing a Masters in Musical Arts at Yale University.

After all his years of schooling and looking back on the mental and emotional struggles that he has faced, Brian gained a great deal of wisdom when it comes coping with hard times and maintaining the strength to believe in yourself and carry on despite the circumstances. He emphasizes the importance of seizing the day and making the most of what you have.

His advice for young aspiring musicians? “Believe in yourself!”

There are endless options for music festivals covering every topic and instrument in many countries all over the world and most of them offer financial aid. It’s okay and even imperative to invest in yourself!

“If you are the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room”

Creating your own workshop is also an option. You simply need to find a need, have an idea, build a team, creatematerial and content, then start marketing and promoting! No one needs to give you permission to make it happen.

10 Jul 2019Episode 29: The Miracle Morning00:17:46

The Miracle Morning is a popular book by Hal Elrod that teaches you how to start your day to ensure productivity and success. Karen tells us about how she incorporates The Miracle Morning into her life and how you can too!

The six daily activities that make up The Miracle Morning are:

  1. Silence
  2. Affirmation
  3. Visualization
  4. Exercise
  5. Reading
  6. Scribing

Also known as S.A.V.E.R.S

The first step to incorporate these activities is to set your alarm one hour earlier than your normally do. By adding one hour to your day, you can spend ten minutes on each of these activities.

Silence: Karen recommends spending your ten minutes of silence somewhere other than your bed to prevent yourself from falling back to sleep. This time is for medication, breathing, reflection, praying, etc.

Affirmation: Your brain doesn’t always know what is real so by reciting positive affirmations to yourself, you will begin to believe and embody these affirmations. Remember to only use positive language!

Visualization: We need to give ourselves permission to dream and want things, having a visual reminder of what you want in your life keeps things in focus.

Exercise: Use this time to continue to wake up your body by stretching, doing some yoga or even some High Intensity workouts. It’s a great way to feel more connected to your body early in the day.

Reading: Find a topic that you are interested in or passionate about and use this time to educate yourself.

Scribing: Use this as an outlet for your thoughts and perhaps even as a time to express gratitude for things in your life.

By completing these six activities first thing in the morning, you will feel accomplished and ready for your day! Check out the book for more information on making The Miracle Morning apart of your daily routine!

31 Jul 2019Episode 31: ITF Recap00:10:42

This week, Karen recounts her experience at the International Trombone Festival that took place in Muncie, IN a few weeks ago. She talks about the top three things that she learned and the importance of attending festivals, workshops, and conferences.

1. Showing up

It can’t be so easy for anyone to come up with a reason not to attend a workshop or music festival but showing up is the first step! Karen experienced such growth and change amongst ITF participants just from being surrounded by their peers and attending masterclasses led by their heroes. By putting yourself in these situations, you can easily find your people and continue your journey towards having a successful career.

2. Get Involved

The next step in making a change and moving forward in your career is to get involved! During ITF, Karen found herself as a member of a diversity panel amongst a number of incredible trombonists simply because she asked and showed interest! Despite not even being a trombonist herself, Karen knew that she could have a voice and make a difference in this situation and ended up having her voice heard.  You don’t have to have a big title or have a place in a major orchestra to be making a difference. Taking a chance and simply asking can make all the difference in helping you find your place and how you can have an impact.

3. Playing Well With Others

Doesn’t matter who you are, how well you play, or what you’ve accomplished, you will not advance in your career if you can not play well with others. Being kind and flexible can open doors for you that you never even thought possible. At ITF, Karen’s husband and COO of CAS, Nick Laufer, was the yes man. He did everything he could to help as many people as possible and ensure that everyone was getting what they needed to have the best experience possible. Nick’s selflessness and willingness to go the extra mile for others resulted in him being asked to judge the trombone quartet competition that he and his quartet had won a decade earlier! It just goes to show that if people enjoy you and appreciate you as a person, you are more likely to be given more opportunities and ultimately lead to greater success.

So get out there and show up, get involved, and be a good person! If you are the smartest person in the room you are in the wrong room.

30 Jul 2019Episode 32: Matthew Jermiason00:26:50

This week, we have Matthew Jermiason back on the podcast for the second time during his time at the CAS Performance and Musician Wellness Workshop in Nashville this summer. Matthew tells us about the struggles of “making it” as a musician in NYC, the joys of having and day job, and overcoming burnout.

Hello NYC!

Since arriving in NYC just eight short months ago, life has been a nonstop whirlwind for Matthew. From the culture shock and learning the mass transit system to acclimating to living with so many other people in such a small space, Matthew admits to needing a few months to get into the flow of such a change. After spending most of his life in North Dakota, Matthew studied music at Bowling Green University in Ohio before finally taking the plunge into the Big Apple. Like many aspiring musicians, Matthew was intrigued with the idea of “making it” and if that was something within his reach. He reflects on how he’s realized how much his idea of “making it” has changed over the years as he’s had different experiences as a musician. Back when he was getting his degree, the idea of playing in a major orchestra was “making it”. Now, as a working musician in NYC, he feels as though he has already “made it” just by living in such an incredible city and making it work while he follows his passions. He sees this new chapter and way of life as a third degree to go along with his Bachelors and his Masters.

Matthew attributes his success to the many other musicians in the city that helped him through this first year. Everyone is from somewhere else and they all had to go through something very similar when they first moved to NYC. It’s the teamwork and comradery amongst musicians that allows everyone to survive this crazy lifestyle.

Burning Out

Feeling burnt out can be a very true fact of life for anyone looking to truly develop their skills and make something of themselves. Musician’s are no exception. Matthew has personally experienced burn out several times in his life and is not afraid to talk about it. After completely both of his degrees, he felt tired, worn down, and simply had no desire to play trombone or make music anymore for the time being. For so long, he had to be 150% and was constantly being told what to do and how to do it on a daily basis. To overcome his burn out, Matthew says that he tried taking a break from music all together and dove into his other interests to allow his mind to focus on other things that made him happy. He felt that disassociating himself as a musician really helped him find himself outside of
