PUBLIC VERSION. Screenwriter Nick Shafir (I.S.S.) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss his journey to becoming a working screenwriter with a film that’s currently playing in theaters all across the country. From a dyslexic aspiring writer living in New York City who discovered THE MOVIE CRYPT podcast back in 2014 and drew his own personal inspiration from it… to paying his dues at various jobs including being the writer’s assistant to the staff of a major network TV series where he was expected to fix toilets and once reprimanded for “walking too loud”… to selling his sci-fi screenplay I.S.S. during the pandemic and what it was like handing his baby off to a creative team and a production process that he wouldn’t be directly involved with from day to day… to why he believes it would be a disservice for an aspiring filmmaker to NOT go through both the wonderful highs and the soul crushing lows that accompany most every artist’s journey… to what it’s really like surviving for 6 months or more without a paycheck in sight yet not throwing in the towel and giving up on your dream… to how exactly Nick took his brilliant single location concept and crafted a complex character driven sci-fi thriller… to the research that he needed to do to believably write a story about scientists living on the space station… to the nonstop anxiety and constant self-doubt that an artist endures while hoping and praying that somehow someone somewhere will discover and recognize your talent… to the triumphant moment of having I.S.S. world premiere at the prestigious Tribeca film festival only to not even be allowed to step foot on the red carpet or talk about the movie due to the WGA strike… we’ve been waiting and waiting (and waiting) to share Nick’s story with you all and the time has finally come!

Also, Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a writer in search of tips on how to improve the dialogue in their screenplays which turns into a super in-depth 20 minute discussion on writing character’s with unique voices.

After a decade of watching his journey and rooting for him every step of the way… on January 5, 2024 Nick Shafir walked into the ArieScope Studio as an accomplished union screenwriter with a film on the eve of opening in theaters nationwide. He is a friend, a colleague, and now… a GUEST on THE MOVIE CRYPT podcast.  We couldn’t possibly ask for a more inspiring way to be starting off 2024 than with this amazing 2-hour conversation!

Will YOU be the next Nick Shafir? Strap in, get to work, and hopefully we’ll see you here in our studio soon!

06 Jan 2020Ep 344: Richard Stanley01:46:03

He’s a mystery wrapped in an enigma and a living hero to every artist who’s ever been trampled over by the system. Filmmaker Richard Stanley (HARDWARE, DUST DEVIL, THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU) sits down with Adam Green, Joe Lynch, and Arwen for a long awaited and fascinating discussion about his career journey. From seeing the original ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU in 1977 and determinedly deciding that he would one day tell H.G. Wells’ fantastical story his own way... to making a name for himself with 1990’s low-budget, post apocalyptic thriller HARDWARE… to watching his follow up DUST DEVIL fall out of his hands due to the bankruptcy of the production company and creative tampering of the final cut of the film (Stanley would go on to finance a restored version from the original negative many years later)… to ultimately getting the chance he dreamed of and writing/directing 1996’s THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU – only to have the project become a legendary clusterfuck after creative disputes lead to him being fired just hours after the start of production (in order to understand the absolute nightmare Stanley endured you need to watch LOST SOUL - the 2014 documentary about the DR. MOREAU fiasco)… only to rise from the ashes over two decades later with this his new feature COLOR OUT OF SPACE… if Richard Stanley’s unbreakable determination doesn’t inspire you to stick to your guns than you need to turn your guns in immediately. Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” to a writer struggling to manage his expectations and Adam and Joe pray at the alter of their cinematic hero in this phenomenal conversation that starts off 2020 in spectacular fashion.

Filmmaker Paul Davis (SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, BEWARE THE MOON: REMEMBERING ‘AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON’, INTO THE DARK) sits down with Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey thus far.  From writing for HORROR HOUND magazine… to making the definitive documentary film about AMERICAN WEREWOLF… to directing numerous short films… to playing a creature in DOCTOR WHO… to keeping his head up during years and years of empty promises and false starts…  to playing a Wookiee in SOLO… to having just wrapped his very first narrative feature for Blumhouse… Paul is living proof of “hanging in there for one more day” and a perfect example of picking yourself back up and continuing to move forward. Dr. Arwen gives out two heaping doses of “Hollywood Therapy,” your “Viewer Mail” gets answers, Paul does some fantastic impressions, and Adam and Joe pretend to try cocaine in this terrific episode that’s quite literally three old friends sitting down over a spot of tea and having a laugh.

Filmmaker Renny Harlin (NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4, DIE HARD 2, CLIFFHANGER, DEEP BLUE SEA, THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT, DRIVEN, EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his long and incredible career journey. From growing up in Finland and sneaking into restricted films underage… to watching a scene being filmed for Don Siegel’s TELEFON (1977) as a child and deciding in that moment that he was going to become a Hollywood action director… to how shooting just a part of his debut feature BORN AMERICAN (1986) lead to a US production company fully financing the rest of the production… to his early days being broke and struggling in Hollywood while living in a friend’s garage… to how casting Kane Hodder in his first role as a creature character in 1987’s PRISON lead to John Carl Buechler casting Kane as “Jason Voorhees” one year later… to making A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4: THE DREAM MASTER and how he came up with and shot the film’s amazing opening sequence… to the unfortunate timing of 1990’s THE ADVENTURES OF FIRD FAIRLANE which was released right as the cultural backlash began against comedian/star Andrew Dice Clay and how the film has surprisingly gone on to become one of his most beloved… to working with Sylvester Stallone on 1993’s CLIFFHANGER… to creating one of the most memorable moments in cinema while shooting 1999’s DEEP BLUE SEA… to making his latest feature THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 1 (in theaters this weekend!) as part of a trilogy that was shot all at once… to the real reason he has yet to attend a DGA social event… Renny candidly opens up in this phenomenal conversation that is filled with cinema anecdotes, filmmaking advice and loads of inspiration.

PUBLIC VERSION. Legendary writer David J. Schow (THE CROW, LEATHERFACE: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III, CRITTERS 3 & 4, THE HILLS RUN RED, and SO MUCH more) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen for an incredibly candid conversation about his prolific career. From writing a newspaper article about people overdoing their tans leading to David writing articles for various Men’s magazines… to his prolific arsenal of incredible one-of-a-kind short stories that created "Splatterpunk" and captured the attention of a young wunderkind at New Line Cinema named Mike Deluca… to being invited in to pitch story ideas for the 1989 TV series FREDDY’S NIGHTMARES where he landed a gig writing what would become the Season 1 finale (“Safe Sex”)… to what his exact involvement actually was with NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 5: THE DREAM CHILD… to why violence and carnage are not enough to make up a good horror story… to one of the craziest horror convention cosplays you’ll ever hear about (it even has a “happily ever after” aspect)… to his painful experience writing for the reboot of THE OUTER LIMITS (the original series is his favorite show of all time)… to the trials and tribulations of being a screenwriter and having to publicly wear any creative changes that were made to your script during the production process without your input or knowledge… to the true story of how the MPAA screwed over the release of LEATHERFACE: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III… to why David has the odd credit of “teleplay by” on Dave Parker’s THE HILLS RUN RED (2009) and why the guys believe that the “Babyface” character could have been ranked among the great slasher icons if the film had received the multiple sequels it deserved… to David’s extremely personal stories from the making of THE CROW and his honest reflections on the powerful and everlasting legacy of the universally beloved film - including the reason why hes only ever watched it twice… Schow is living proof that hard work, tenacity, and originality can indeed pay off and shine through the dark times. After all, it cant rain all the time.

Dr Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a returning patient who’s just completed her very first short film and looking for some advice as she starts submitting it to festivals, David reveals what became of the De Laurentiis mechanical “King Kong” created for the 1976 remake, and Adam shares the embarrassing story of the first time he tried smoking weed in this brutally honest, extended length, special episode that’s so damn good you’re going to want to listen to it twice!

13 Dec 2021Ep 445: Josh Miller00:40:39

PUBLIC VERSION. Happy YORKIETHON Weekend! We hope that you enjoyed (or are still enjoying) all the craziness we planned for our 6th annual YORKIETHON…but we also didn’t want to break our stream of never having a Monday come without an actual episode! Hopefully we saved a ton of dogs together this weekend! If you contributed- THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts!

This week, writer Josh Miller (SONIC THE HEDGEHOG) stopped by while Adam and Joe were in the thick of YORKIETHON preparations for a quick but no less eventful episode to discuss how he went from a middle-America geek to one of the more sought after scribes working in town these days! Josh takes us through his origins, how he met his current writing partner Pat Casey, and their process in working together over the years. Josh and Joe also discuss what it was like working together on YouTube/Blumhouse’s 12 DEADLY DAYS digital series and the “fun” of working on a holiday horror series on the same location as an abandoned mental institution. Josh takes us through the process of creating a script for one of the most iconic video game characters in recent times, including Sonic’s new origin story, being true to the IP of the character so as to not piss off ALL of the fans, and what it was like being dropped from the project only to come back after its been rewritten. Josh shares little details on how he and Pat went back to the well to write the sequel (including working with Jim Carrey from the start!), he talks about his position as one of the main programmers for the popular “Friday Night Frights” film series in Los Angeles, and Dr. Arwen heads to Travis Scott's ASTROWORLD (figuratively- not literally) for an extremely relevant "Hollywood Therapy" session.

From HIGH highs to LOW lows this episode is a rollercoaster of emotions even if it's a slightly shorter than usual episode due to the limited amount of time we had together. Hopefully you're joining us in basking in the after-glow (or just sheer exhaustion) of this year’s YORKIETHON! Dont’ forget - you can still donate to Save A Yorkie Rescue using the link on the YORKIETHON 6 page on ArieScope.com and help us save some dogs in time for Christmas! Thanks to everyone who stuck in with us this weekend! No coal from Santa for you this year!

11 Jun 2018Ep 262: Srdjan Spasojevic01:35:01

Srdjan Spasojevic, the filmmaker behind one of the most controversial films ever made (2010’s A SERBIAN FILM), joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen for a wonderfully candid and honest conversation about his career journey so far.  From a child growing up in Serbia with only two TV channels and limited access to films… to a teenager with newfound access to video stores and a love for Chuck Norris… to making short films while studying at university… to having his first feature film thrown out of post-house after post-house due to its shocking and boundary pushing content… to releasing what would become the most notorious film of modern time (banned/rejected in at least 46 countries that we know of)… Srdjan has lived through an experience like no other. Listen as the three filmmakers discuss Srdjan’s difficult path and the many hurdles he has faced while refusing to compromise his art.  Dr. Arwen prescribes a special marital edition of “Hollywood Therapy,” our Patreon supporters get answers to their “Viewer Mail” questions, and the mysterious curtain that has been surrounding this controversial filmmaker is publicly pulled back to reveal the incredibly kind and talented man behind the notoriety.  No matter what your opinion of A SERBIAN FILM may be we’re confident that once you meet the man behind the controversy you’ll respect him just as much as Adam, Joe, and Arwen do.

Don't miss Adam, Joe, and Arwen's commentary for A SERBIAN FILM - coming this Friday exclusively for THE MOVIE CRYPT's beloved Patreon supporters! No spoilers but it's certainly the most "unique" commentary the boys (and girl) have ever recorded.

Filmmaker Mickey Keating (CARNAGE PARK, PSYCHOPATHS) sits down with Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey so far. With four features under his belt in the last 3 years alone (each one premiering at a major film festival), Mickey is one of the very best examples out there today of an artist finding a way against all odds. From making the absolute most out of a meager budget… to the benefits of working with a skeleton crew… to avoiding trends and creating the kinds of films he wants to see… to the anxiety that surrounds unveiling each film to an audience for the first time... to stepping in front of the cameras as the host of SHUDDER’s original series THE CORE… this episode is an absolute “must hear” for anyone looking to break in to today’s industry. Austrian filmmaking team Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz (GOODNIGHT MOMMY, THE LODGE) sits down with Adam, Joe, and Arwen for a hilarious and extremely honest conversation about their career journey and the reality of financing films in this day and age. The unlikely filmmaking duo share the incredible story of how they met and began working together… the major differences/similarities between getting a film financed in Austria and in America… their approach to equally sharing the helm on each project… the major differences with which “success” is measured in Austria and in the USA… and the challenges that almost every filmmaker faces in trying to communicate just how difficult it actually is to maintain a career in the arts to those on the outside of the industry. Dr. Arwen provides emotional support/advice to a filmmaker wondering when the time is right to stop working for free (which spawns a brutally honest discussion about the perils of being too generous), Adam shares a very messy story about “parenting,” and Joe and Severin realize that they in fact shared a past “life” in this super entertaining and incredibly candid episode.

From getting arrested shooting a short film as a kid growing up in Canada… to being rejected from every film school in Canada for having bad grades… to attending the NY Film Academy in Los Angeles where he was assigned to make 2 short films but instead made 12… to losing his visa and having to go back to Canada… to making the decision to learn the business side of things as a way to work his way back to Hollywood… to the unlikely business he started that provided him with the skills and resources he needed to become a producer… to his triumphant return to Hollywood where he made 21 movies over the next 10 years… to the absolute nightmare situation he went through while producing 2020’s BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC and the importance of remaining persistent and never giving up no matter what goes wrong… Alex provides a crash course in inspiration that will have anyone who is feeling beaten down ready to get back up and into the fight!

28 Dec 2020Ep 395: Goodbye 202001:02:18
PUBLIC VERSION. Adam, Joe, and Arwen say goodbye and good riddance to 2020 in their traditional year end recap. Starting off with a detailed recap of last weekend’s YORKIETHON 5 (or at least, what their sleep deprived minds can remember from it), the boys proceed with a look back at the highlights of this past year including: their favorite episodes of 2020… recording the show over Zoom in the social distancing era… the month of daily live streams that was ADAM GREEN’S CORONAPOCALYPSE and it’s 2-night follow up 6 months later… parting ways with the Fangoria Podcast Network… their favorite MOVIE CRYPT LIVE pre-shows… the fun of SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE… the resurrection of ADAM GREEN’S SCARY SLEEPOVER… Joe’s Atlanta adventures on Season 2 of CREEPSHOW… ArieScope’s 22nd annual Halloween short film FULL SIZE… both MAYHEM and VICTOR CROWLEY playing on Joe Bob Brigg’s THE LAST DRIVE-IN… “Victor Crowley” achieving NECA action figure status… the devastating murder of Adam’s ex-girlfriend Amie Harwick… the heartbreaking loss of “S. Tyler Kitty”… HOLLISTON’s triumphant re-birth on Shudder… and more.

In a year stricken by political and racial division, cancel culture, toxic social media, a toilet paper shortage, a serious lack of hugs, and a worldwide plague that forced mankind to quarantine and isolate from each other… the three of us tried our very best to go the extra mile and continually create opportunities for the Crypt Keeper community to lean on each other and keep laughing through the depressing days and dark nights. In the end 2020 couldn’t beat us! We’re ending this incredibly difficult year having grown as individuals and having become closer friends. As some extra icing on the cake, our community crossed the 2020 finish line having saved a whole bunch of dogs together in the name of love!

So go ahead and wrap up 2020 in duct tape, set it on fire, and drive it off of a cliff like Slash’s car in the “November Rain” video. But never forget that every time this year knocked us down with its worst, our community continually got back up and tried our best. 2020 may have sucked hard- but we never gave up.

We wish you all a happy, inspired, and laugh filled new year! Stay safe, friends. Things will be better soon.
-AG, JL, & A
30 Aug 2021Ep 430: Alex Proyas01:02:46

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Alex Proyas (THE CROW, DARK CITY, I ROBOT, KNOWING, GODS OF EGYPT) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen for this extra special super-sized episode! From Alex’s early days as part of the talent lineup at Propaganda Films directing music videos for acts like INXS, FLEETWOOD MAC, and CROWDED HOUSE… to his fateful step into studio feature films with the beautifully haunting THE CROW (1994) which underwent the devastating and well documented tragedy of the accidental death of star Brandon Lee… his extremely candid opinion on why THE MATRIX (1999) has always seemed so suspiciously familiar to what many consider to be his visual masterpiece DARK CITY (1998)…to why his many experiences working within the major studio system on blockbusters like I ROBOT (2004), KNOWING (2009) and GODS OF EGYPT (2016) have left him no longer interested in pursuing studio films… this conversation with one of cinema’s underdog heroes may be among THE MOVIE CRYPT’s very best! 14 Feb 2022Ep 454: "Toxic Fandom & Cancel Culture" Roundtable02:03:49
In the first of a new series of Movie Crypt roundtable conversations, Adam, Joe, and Arwen welcome the co-creators and co-hosts of The MJ Cast (Jamon Bull, Q, and Elise Capron) along with award winning British investigative journalist and frequent MJ Cast contributor Charles Thomson (THE HUFFINGTON POST, THE GUARDIAN, THE SUN, and more) as they candidly discuss toxic fandom in a cancel culture world.

Created in 2015, The MJ Cast is a podcast celebrating Michael Jackson through in-depth interviews with the very people who worked closely with and truly knew the real King of Pop as well as extremely honest opinions and perspectives that cover all aspects of Jackson’s life and career. This roundtable conversation explores the joys of creating a podcast dedicated to discussing THE most famous entertainer who ever lived as well as the many hurdles that come with attracting such an extremely passionate and opinionated global fanbase… especially when the subject of their podcast was placed in the cancel culture crosshairs with the 2019 release of HBO’s polarizing and problematic documentary/TV movie LEAVING NEVERLAND in which two men accused Jackson of having sexually abused them in their childhood years. MJ Cast co-hosts Jamon, Q, and Elise share their front row experiences with fandom at both its best and at its uglies while investigative journalist Charles Thomson (best known for his award winning investigation that exposed the cover up of the historic Shoebury paedophile ring) levels off the conversation with his fact based perspective on the explosive worldwide response to the controversial LEAVING NEVERLAND.

As mentioned early in the episode, this conversation uses the controversy surrounding LEAVING NEVERLAND as a main example to comment on toxic fandom and the cancel culture times we are all living in. If you want to know more we suggest the following resources:

22 Jan 2024Ep 555: Josh Forbes01:00:01

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Josh Forbes (DESTROY ALL NEIGHBORS, CONTRACTED: PHASE 2) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss his career journey. From honing his craft and making his mark as a music video and commercial director… to making the jump into feature films… to the difference between subversive bloody fun and b-movie shlock… to working with the great Jonah Ray (MST3K, VICTOR CROWLEY) in a leading man role and the amazing Alex Winter (THE LOST BOYS, BILL & TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE) as an absolutely unrecognizable character under incredible make-up in DESTROY ALL NEIGHBORS… to how Josh made his creative choices on such a quirky film as a director who truly enjoys considering and trying the numerous ideas that such a talented cast excitedly comes to the project with… to why the decision was made to change “William Brown’s” artistic journey from that of a struggling cartoonist to that of a struggling prog rock musician… to how Josh and his make-up FX team pulled off such fantastical characters and elaborate effects sequences with the extremely limited time and resources of an indie budget and what it was like working with a diva swine… Josh pulls back the blood soaked and intestine splattered curtain on his latest feature opus! DESTROY ALL NEIGHBORS is currently playing in select theaters and streaming on SHUDDER.

Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a fellow podcaster facing a creative crossroads, Joe gets certified fresh, Adam gets clean as a whistle, and Chuckwagon returns in this fun and informative conversation.

12 Oct 2020Ep 384: Andre Gower01:02:18

PUBLIC VERSION. Actor and Filmmaker Andre Gower (THE MONSTER SQUAD, MR. PRESIDENT) virtually joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career and his phenomenal new documentary on cult fandom: WOLFMAN’S GOT NARDS (available on 10/27). From the endless auditioning as a child actor… to landing the leading role of “Sean” in Fred Dekker and Shane Black’s cult classic THE MONSTER SQUAD (you might be surprised which role he actually auditioned for!)… to filming the commercial for ATARI’s doomed E.T. Video Game … to directing his new documentary and the long road he has traveled with it from concept to release… Andre dives deep into the magic of fandom and just how important the films that we grew up loving actually are in the shaping of our lives. Dr. Arwen provides Hollywood Therapy to a writer having anxiety over choosing a director for her project and Andre blows Adam’s HE-MAN loving childhood mind in this FAN-tastic episode that encompasses everything that’s awesome about the things we love. Seriously, if you’re not smiling throughout this entire conversation you may be dead inside!

27 May 2019Ep 313: Taj Jackson03:01:15

Musician and filmmaker Taj Jackson (3T, TV’s THE JACKSONS: NEXT GENERATION) sits down with Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss the truth about his late Uncle Michael Jackson in the wake of the extremely controversial and polarizing HBO “documentary” LEAVING NEVERLAND. Together they dive deep into the details behind the 1993 and 2005 false allegations against Michael… discuss the potential dangers of abusing “cancel culture”… and shine a light on the numerous discrepancies and lies put forward in LEAVING NEVERLAND. Clocking in at 3 hours, this highly emotional and educational conversation stresses the importance of vetting the validity of accusations and the great injustice of blindly believing whatever we’re told.

Filmmaker Kyra Gardner may have only just graduated film school a few months ago but she’s already one of the best examples we know of an emerging young talent making huge strides in the world of cinema today! From trying to decide between a career as a veterinarian or an army nurse and instead choosing filmmaking as her calling… to observing her father at work on sets (Tony Gardner is an FX legend – check out our conversation with him in Ep 246)… to having her first short film selected for the 39th Cleveland International Film Festival at age 16 (the youngest participant ever!)… to having her short form documentary THE DOLLHOUSE acquired by Universal Studios for inclusion on the CULT OF CHUCKY home video (she was only 19!)... to winning a DGA Student Award at age 22 for her latest short film PHOEBE… at just 22 years old Kyra’s list of accomplishments is enough to motivate anyone looking to pick up a camera! Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” to a patient who is worried that his life may have passed him by as well as a filmmaker ready to secure distribution for his series while Joe stays in bed with the flu just like “Cameron” in FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF (“let my Cameron go…”) in this wicked inspiring episode.

Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a writer looking for the right place to start and Kim reveals the one personality trait that he credits as the secret to his success!

06 Aug 2018Ep 270: Andrew Yong01:03:44
Last year Andrew Yong sat down with Adam Green for this in-depth interview about his book I, SURVIVOR, however due to the publisher’s demands the episode had to be held back from airing until the book’s formal release. The lone survivor of the horrific 2007 “Honey Island Swamp Massacre,” Yong stood accused of viciously murdering over 40 people in the New Orleans bayou in his now infamous trial. Standing by his testimony that it was in fact “Victor Crowley” (an urban legend / local ghost story in Louisiana) who butchered the innocent victims, it seemed that Yong was surely facing the death penalty until the jury miraculously found him innocent and exonerated him from the heinous crimes. Listen as Yong discusses the writing of his tell-all book and relives his terrifying encounter with “Victor Crowley” that was really only the beginning of the hell his life would become.

For fans of Green’s HATCHET franchise this tie-in podcast episode is like one giant bonus feature for VICTOR CROWLEY (HATCHET 4) as the characters of “Andrew Yong” and his publicist “Kathleen” cross over into the real world on THE MOVIE CRYPT. Trust us, this is one episode that you’re going to want to re-visit some day down the carefully paved road ahead! Order your copy of I, SURVIVOR today on ArieScope.com.

22 Apr 2024Ep 568: Cameron and Colin Cairnes01:00:17

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmakers Cameron and Colin Cairnes (LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL, 100 BLOODY ACRES) join Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss their career journey and the making of their new hit film. From growing up in Australia in the 80’s as fans of cinema and the movies that inspired them to pursue a career in filmmaking… to the late night talk shows, hosts, and famous moments in television that inspired their script for LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL… to the challenges they faced crafting a story set entirely in one location and implementing a “found footage/documentary” style… to the various technical nuances and camera tricks they used to present the film in as realistic a way as possible… to how they work together as both brothers and filmmakers… to the social media backlash the duo faced over using A.I. technology to generate a few of the film’s graphics (and WHEN that decision was actually made)… Cameron and Colin take us deep behind the scenes of one of the year’s most talked about horror films and their devilish late night journey together.

Meet Adam Green at Texas Frightmare Weekend in Irvine, TX May 17th - 19th where he’ll be appearing alongside Kane Hodder, Danielle Harris, and FX artist Robert Pendergraft from the HATCHET franchise and offering the first ever “Victor Crowley” photo op! 03 Jul 2023Ep 526: Matt Angel & Suzanne Coote01:00:37

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaking duo Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote (HYPNOTIC, THE OPEN HOUSE) join Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss their career journeys together and the making of their latest film THE WRATH OF BECKY (now in theaters and available digitally)! In this terrific conversation Matt and Suzanne discuss the serendipitous way they met and began working together… the challenges of making a film that addresses our extremely divisive times while keeping the fun and violent mayhem accessible to as broad of an audience as possible… casting the spectacular Seann William Scott (GOON, AMERICAN PIE) as the film’s villain… the misconceptions about sequels and their budgets… and in the incredible second hour things get brutally honest as the conversation turns to finding good producers, the duos real reaction to the amazing news that their film had been accepted into the prestigious SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST film festival, the importance of having impeccable communication, and how they recovered from their first film’s disappointing reception and rose from the ashes stronger and more in love with their craft than before!

The second hour of this one is AMAZING, Patrons! Aspiring filmmakers- pay close attention!

28 Aug 2023Ep 534: Sam Lipman-Stern01:00:37

PUBLIC VERSION. Documentary filmmaker Sam Lipman-Stern (TELEMARKETERS, Vice, Rolling Stone) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his unique career journey and the making of his new doc-series TELEMARKETERS (currently streaming on MAX). From dropping out of High School in 9th grade and going to work full time as a telemarketer when he was just 14 years old… to being gifted a SONY handi-cam that would ultimately set him on his career path… to beginning to develop his storytelling voice during the pre-Youtube era of posting short videos on-line (remember eBaum’s World??)… to interning at Vice and becoming part of their video team as the magazine began evolving into a journalistic powerhouse… to his work as a video producer for Rolling Stone Magazine… to producing, directing, and shooting documentaries and interviews for PBS, MTV, Esquire, Adidas, Apple, The NBA, The New York Times, and more… to teaming up with the Safdie Brothers (UNCUT GEMS) and Rough House Pictures (Danny McBride, Jody Hill, and David Gordon Green’s company) and turning the countless hours of footage from his telemarketing job into the incredibly compelling docu-series TELEMARKETERS… Sam’s journey is one of the most unique and fascinating stories you’ll hear this year!

The guys also geek out over early digital video cameras, Sam tells some of his favorite stories from his time as a telemarketer, Adam discovers his balls at age 25, and Joe shares more details about his upcoming screening of MAYHEM (2017) at the Landmark Nuart Theater in Los Angeles on September 1st!

20 Nov 2023Ep 546: Michael Kennedy00:59:00

PUBLIC VERSION. Screenwriter and Producer Michael Kennedy (FREAKY, IT’S A WONDERFUL KNIFE) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss his career journey. From working as an animation assistant and IT support on FAMILY GUY for 10 years and what it was like when his writing career took off and he was able to head out on his own… to the making of FREAKY and its release during the pandemic.. to defining his voice as a writer and finding his lane… to the comical tribulations of being a writer where others get credit for a writer’s wins while the writer takes the blame for aspects that were beyond their control… to the making of his latest film IT’S A WONDERFUL KNIFE and his love for holiday movies… to the look of the villains he has created and the design of their masks… to how heartbreaking it is that so few will ever hear a film’s actual sound mix in the modern era of streaming films on tablets, phones, and poorly set up home theater systems… to why “old” can always be “new” again if a story is told with a fresh and original voice… Michael’s amazing success story is candidly laid out in this truly honest conversation about the filmmaking process.

The group also discusses how unfortunate it is that the original BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974) doesn’t get more of the respect it deserves, when it may be better to write a script on spec instead of pitching the idea first, and how even the most well intended decisions by executives to make a film more inclusive can backfire when the audience can tell that they’re being pandered to.

24 Oct 2022Ep 490: Peter Atkins00:59:37

PUBLIC VERSION. Writer Peter Atkins (HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II, HELLRAISER III: HELL ON EARTH, HELLRAISER: BLOODLINE, WISHMASTER) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey… to hell and back! From a blue collar aspiring rock musician living in Liverpool to becoming one of the most pivotal artists to ever create within the great Clive Barker’s sandbox and the iconic HELLRAISER franchise…this deep dive into everything Cenobite would satisfy even “Uncle Frank’s” darkest desires! How did a disastrous economy wind up providing just the right opportunity for Peter at just the right time? What was Peter’s writing process and creative collaboration with Clive actually like? What was actually shot for the HELLRAISER sequels and what was torn out of Peter’s screenplays before cameras ever rolled? What scenes were cut in the editing process? Does Peter think that fans will ever see the rumored cutting room floor moments that fans have been whispering about on-line for decades? PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Charles Dorfman (BARBARIANS) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey in this refreshingly honest filmmaker on filmmaker conversation about the long process of bringing an idea to the big screen for the first time. From a child enamored with his grandfather’s vast collection of VHS films… to reading every book about film directing that he could get his young hands on… to studying theater as a student at University where he initially started acting as a means to becoming a better director… to working as a development executive where he earned Associate Producer credits on films like THE KING’S SPEECH, SHAME, and TRACKS… to setting up his own theater company where he acted in several plays… to the long process of writing BARBARIANS while figuring out what exactly he wanted to do with his life… to how he ultimately came to the conclusion that if he would be directing the film he would not also act in it like he had originally planned… to the importance of always keeping an eye on the entire process of producing a film and not developing tunnel vision on only the task at hand… Charlie’s experience making BARBARIANS is one that aspiring filmmakers can surely gain insight and inspiration from.

Charlie also shares what 80’s soft rock song his film’s live foxes preferred to hear on set and the boys’ fingers get bitten when they fall down a YouTube rabbit hole in a discussion about why filmmakers and other content creators shouldn’t base the value of their work entirely on the number of views or “likes” each effort receives.

(We could have easily gone on for another 2 hours if time had allowed!)

Unfortunately, there is no “Hollywood Therapy” segment this week as Arwen wasn’t feeling well (don’t worry, she went to the vet right after this recording and she’s already feeling much better) but Elisha was able to answer a bunch of your “Viewer Mail” questions before we ran out of time!

(SUMMER SCHOOL fans are going to have their minds blown by all of the behind the scenes anecdotes that Dean shares in the spectacular second half of this phenomenal episode!)

Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a writer who has created an ideal set-up to write in but who is having trouble getting any actual writing accomplished… Dean wins Adam’s heart with his true love of metal… and the boys fail miserably at controlling their excitement over meeting one of their cinematic heroes in this heartfelt and fantastically fun conversation that is THE MOVIE CRYPT at its very best!

Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a writer looking to break in and a patient having anxiety about returning to “normal” after the pandemic, Joe recalls how Debbie taught him what a consummate professional looks like on a set, and Adam gets no respect after crowning an actress with the title of “Scream Queen Winner."

Through sheer ambition, tenacity, and raw talent, Schultz would pave his own way into Hollywood. He would go on to direct some of the biggest actors, comedians, and musicians in the history of entertainment and now… 50 years later… Michael Schultz is one the most prolific directors in American television and a bonafide hero of Black cinema. Best of all, he has also managed to remain one of the most humble human beings you’ll ever be blessed to meet.

From the pros and cons of 35mm vs DCP, vinyl records/analogue recordings vs CDs/digital files, Blu-Ray vs VHS… to how Jeff wasn’t even a fan of movies (“Why spend 2 hours of a date sitting in silence and staring at a screen together when you could be talking to each other instead?”) until he saw Michelangelo Antonioni’s BLOW-UP (1966) - a transformative cinematic experience that completely changed his direction in life… to how the positive affirmation and encouragement of a teacher made him realize that he was actually a talented writer… to how an anti-drug short film he made in 1972 (THE RINGER) helped secure him as the director for his screenplay SQUIRM in 1976… to why it’s a compliment to hear from fans that he “messed up their childhood”… to the real life horror movie set up that inspired Jeff’s big film that got away… to how a film’s score can be a disservice to creating true suspense… to a lesson in Hollywood accounting… to the writing of his new book DAY OF THE LIVING ME: ADVENTURES OF A SUBVERSIVE CULT FILMMAKER FROM THE GOLDEN AGE (now available!)… this in-depth conversation with a true legend of cinema is as enjoyable as it is educational.

Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a listener worried about going crazy between gigs and Jeff reveals how dancing with a gorilla on Halloween inspired SATAN’S LITTLE HELPER and the real reason why most fans don’t even realize that he wrote the second sequel to a beloved 80’s children’s movie.

From being named after “Damien” in THE OMEN and being introduced to horror films at age 3… to falling in love with the art of special make-up effects and making his own short films… to quickly deciding that college wasn’t his path and putting money into a short film to serve as his calling card instead… to being recruited to direct an anthology (ALL HALLOWS’ EVE) by a producer who saw his short on YouTube… to the genesis of “Art the Clown”… to making TERRIFIER on a ridiculously low budget by wearing so many key hats on the production himself… to the film’s slow climb to success through word of mouth and the excitement of horror fans… to the long road to making the highly anticipated sequel (TERRIFIER 2 - in theaters October 6th) and everything that goes into creating a great villain that connects with genre fans… this 2 hour filmmaker on filmmaker conversation is like taking a Slasher 101 course at Horror University… if Horror University was a thing.

From the films of 1999 that injected him with the filmmaking bug… to his experience at FSU and his first few assistant jobs working within the industry… to turning his gig as a “tape logger” for huge studio productions into his own version of film school… to the Production Assistant experience that changed his entire outlook on filmmaking… to his work as an editor on V/H/S VIRAL and his extensive working relationship editing films for friends of THE MOVIE CRYPT Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead (Episode 209) like THE ENDLESS, SYNCHRONIC, and SOMETHING IN THE DIRT… to the process of writing and developing his time traveling mind bender THINGS WILL BE DIFFERENT (in theaters now and available On-Demand soon)… and the massive wrench that got thrown into his production at the very start of photography and the extremely creative way that he pivoted to overcome the obstacle… Michael’s story is as technically fascinating as it is inspiring.
