07 Jul 2024#17 Do you squirm in confrontation and conflict? Let’s make it constructive00:36:50

In this episode, we dive into the topic of constructive conflict and crucial conversations, exploring how to handle confrontation effectively. Liz shares her insights after reading "The Advantage" by Patrick Lencioni, which reshaped her understanding of conflict.

First, we define conflict and dispel the myth that conflict is inherently bad. Conflict is essential in the workplace, fostering growth and improvement. We discuss the spectrum of conflict, from artificial harmony to destructive conflict, highlighting the goal of achieving constructive conflict.

Key elements in handling conflict include character, self-confidence, and trust in those around you. Vulnerability plays a significant role, as does having the right motives—aiming for the best solution for the team and the overarching purpose. It's crucial to receive information from others without fear, avoiding destructive behaviours and not taking offence easily. Remember, nothing is personal, and behaviour often hints at internal struggles both for you and the other person.

In team settings, giving the benefit of the doubt and thinking the best of your colleagues is vital. Conflict requires practice, and mistakes are part of the learning process. Initially, it may look messy, but real-time conflict practice is essential for improvement. Changing your perspective on conversations and removing personal biases can lead to more effective conflict resolution.

Emily shares how her workplace handles conflict, emphasising the importance of synergy, as described in Habit 6 of "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People." This approach goes beyond respectful communication, aiming for win-win outcomes rather than win-lose or lose-win scenarios.

To learn more about conflict, we recommend listening to Patrick Lencioni's podcasts (Em made a whoopsie on the name in the poddy - sorry Pat), which offer valuable insights. Self-discovery is crucial; examine your reactions in conflict situations and maintain a growth mindset. Journaling about your responses and seeking accountability can help you understand and process your reactions.

Liz references her learnings from Chet Holmes book ‘The Ultimate Sales Machine’. Liz references Rockafella Habits accidentally so when she is referring to that she is meaning the principles from Chet’s book linked below. She talks about how discussing pain points in meetings is crucial for all parties in a team.

Action is necessary—engage in conflict, practice, and repeat. Building new neural pathways and developing a new skill set requires numerous repetitions, but the result is well worth the effort.

14 Jul 2024#18 Are you an entrepreneur or an intrapreneur? 7 ways you can know.00:28:52

In this episode, we explore the concepts of entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship, sharing personal insights and experiences from both of our past experiences. We begin by defining an entrepreneur as someone who sets up businesses, taking on financial risks. In contrast, an intrapreneur is an individual who creates new and innovative products within an established business, utilising the company's resources to bring ideas to life.

We discuss the importance of both roles in the workplace, highlighting how different personalities and risk profiles complement each other in a team. After completing your new grad years, you might wonder what's next—perhaps opening a business? We encourage removing the curtain and talking frankly about your motivations and goals. Understanding your "why" is crucial.

For those leaning towards intrapreneurship, we emphasise the benefits of working within a team and using available resources to achieve goals without the heavy struggle entrepreneurs often face. The business carries the risk, so it's essential to prove your innovation is worthy while being mindful of resource management. Focus on making things better, serving others, and setting your team up for success.

Entrepreneurship can be lonely and burdensome, involving significant risks, the pressure of generating income, and the responsibility of paying others. While the adventure and thrill can be exhilarating, it comes with negative thoughts and challenges. Despite the glamorous social media portrayal of overseas holidays and champagne, entrepreneurs often find themselves answering emails and managing the business.

We discuss the judgments and questions potential entrepreneurs face: Are you prepared to go all in, back yourself, work hard for minimal pay, take huge risks, learn new skills, and potentially fail? Leadership involves significant sacrifices in time and emotions, so it's crucial to think wisely before deciding. Entrepreneurship offers flexibility but not necessarily freedom, as it requires continuous thinking, creating, and analysing.

To help you determine whether you are more suited to being an entrepreneur or an intrapreneur, we provide seven key questions to ask yourself:

  1. Why do you want to start a business? If it's for recognition, reconsider.
  2. Are you comfortable with enormous risks?
  3. Are you passionate and a problem solver?
  4. Do you embrace failure?
  5. Are you quick to make decisions and confident, even if you fail?
  6. Can you manage yourself and be accountable without needing feedback?
  7. Are these traits learned over time, or are they innate for you?

We'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences on this topic.

01 Jul 2024#16 Feeling time poor? Take control of your time00:50:00

In this episode, we delve into the importance of effective planning and time management, featuring insights from Liz on quarterly planning. Liz emphasises the need for clear long-term goals, asking yourself where you want to be in five years, one year, and 3 months, and listing the tasks necessary to achieve those goals. We call on exercise goals as an example of commitment to goals, breaking big goals down and creating healthy habits. One common pitfall is the perception of either having too much time or not enough time, which is unproductive. Instead, we should adopt the mindset that we choose how to spend our time: "Time is not my master, I am a master of my time." This approach encourages intentional use of time.

The glorification of being busy often leads to unproductive behaviour, where we end up running around like headless chickens and abdicating responsibility. Liz advocates for a shift in perspective: viewing your schedule as full rather than busy. Effective planning and goal setting are essential at all levels, especially for management and professional advancement.

We discuss practical strategies for planning on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis. This forward-thinking approach helps reduce the mental load and prevents the chaos of last-minute decisions. Liz suggests outlining the three most important tasks and tackling the one you least want to do first, as this often has the most significant impact and moves the needle forward. This concept, derived from key performance indicators (KPIs) from the 1980s, implies making a substantial, positive change.

Time blocking is another effective technique, where you allocate specific time slots for different tasks and set deadlines. This helps maintain focus and ensures tasks are completed within a set timeframe. Accountability and self-discipline are crucial for successful time management. Using the carrot-and-stick approach, you can motivate yourself by rewarding accomplishments.

When feeling overwhelmed, writing everything down can help organize your thoughts and priorities. We also discuss the importance of working in a supportive workplace that encourages healthy planning and goal-setting practices, such as 90-day plans and specific projects for speech therapists. Tools like Clockify can assist in tracking time and improving productivity.

We recommend several resources for further learning, including "The One Thing" book, Lorraine Murphy's "Get Remarkably Organised," and "Eat That Frog," which offer valuable tips on prioritisation and productivity.

21 Jul 2024#19 Giving Power to our Parents00:32:55

In this episode, we focus on how we can empower parents and enhance collaboration to achieve a better therapeutic approach. Drawing from our experiences as two mums who have taken our kids to specialists and therapy, we discuss the differences between medical and therapeutic treatments, highlighting that speech and exercise physiology journeys are often long and require ongoing engagement.

To alleviate parents' anxiety, education and open communication are crucial. Aligning education with the value of therapy helps parents understand and engage more positively, which in turn helps them talk more positively to their children about therapy.

For parents whose children are in school and not always present, maintaining engagement can be challenging. Effective strategies include follow-up phone calls, providing fact sheets, using communication books, and sending emails. Being an informed SLP (Speech-Language Pathologist) is key.

Creating supportive partnerships with parents involves:

  • Actively listening
  • Working together
  • Including parents in decision-making
  • Being positive
  • Demonstrating empathy

Conversely, we undermine these partnerships when we:

  • Listen as lip service
  • Have a preconceived agenda
  • Focus on measurement or standardisation
  • Focus solely on the diagnosis

For business owners, marketing can be reframed as education, helping parents understand the value and process of therapy.

Identifying and effectively engaging with parents involves:

  • Listening to understand their concerns and needs
  • Implementing practical strategies
  • Providing education and ensuring comprehension through asking questions
  • Maintaining open and honest conversations

Lizzy emphasises the importance of these practices in building strong, collaborative relationships with parents.

24 Mar 2024#5 Employee vs. Independent: Which Role Suits You Best?00:42:40

In today's episode, we delve into a critical decision many health professionals face: whether to pursue a career as an employee or venture into independent work. In this episode we explore our own experiences, our own journeys from being employees to contractors, and ultimately, to running our own businesses. Along the way, we'll uncover valuable insights about values, mentorship, and finding alignment in your professional life.

Em embarked on her professional journey by working within various frameworks: public sector, governmental roles, community health, and hospitals. Eventually, transitioning into the role of a contractor before finally establishing her own business.

Liz's career path is a testament to versatility, having worked as a contractor, an employee, and finally, as the owner of her own business. “Through my experiences, I emphasize the importance of understanding personal values and how they align with different career trajectories.”

In our experiences we have found that employees attract a level of training, quality control, support and career progression. Access to mentorship and structured professional development opportunities are often a part of the ageement and often the stability that comes with these terms can be helpful for home loans and benefits like sick leave.

On the other hand, contractors enjoy greater freedom in hours, unpaid leave, work approach and flexibility in service offerings. Including more fluid mentorship processes which pave the way for entrepreneurial endeavours. These arrangements can often also present the opportunity to explore diverse career paths and adapt to changing life seasons.

Choosing your path is a deeply personal decision. It's essential to prioritize alignment with personal values and recognize the importance of mentorship and professional development in shaping your career trajectory. For those aspiring to entrepreneurship, transitioning through independent roles can be a strategic move.

In the journey of professional growth, the decision between being an employee or an independent is deeply personal. Our stories shed light on the multifaceted nature of career choices and the significance of aligning values with professional endeavours. Whether you're seeking stability or entrepreneurial freedom, understanding your unique path is essential in crafting a fulfilling career journey.

30 Sep 2024#23 Managing Challenging Behaviours with Stephanie Pinto01:02:32

In this episode, we dive into the nuances of emotional expression and how it impacts leadership and parenting. Our guest, Stephanie Pinto, an expert in emotional intelligence, shares her insights on why detecting emotions through facial expressions is often inaccurate and how our own emotional states can influence our perceptions. We discuss the importance of teaching emotional vocabulary to children through real-life experiences rather than relying solely on traditional visuals. Stephanie also highlights her book, From Chaos to Connection, and her online resources for parents and therapists.

10 Mar 2024#3 Em & Lizzy; From Biz Besties to Joint Ventures, Here is Our Story00:23:02

In this episode, we'll take you through our journey of how we met at a business conference and quickly formed a bond, fuelled by our shared experiences of business and being mothers in the professional world. Despite working on different projects, we found solace and support in each other, sparking both business and mentoring journeys that have enriched our lives.

Our collaboration has been a long time coming, stemming from way back when Em attended Liz's Kids Heart Pilates and immediately saw the potential for partnership. Through frequent conversations over Voxer, we provided each other with encouragement and peer mentoring, drawing from our individual strengths in areas like team culture and mindset.

As we navigated challenges like maternity leave while running businesses and our own children's developmental needs and complexities, we realised the power of collaboration in addressing broader issues in child development and the power of working together.

Throughout our journey, we've learned the importance of openness, collaboration, and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. By sharing our experiences and learning from each other, we're committed to making a meaningful impact in the field of child development through our podcast, courses, and collaborative efforts.

16 Jun 2024#14 How to ask for a payrise? Let’s talk contracts and cash!00:52:19

In this episode, we discuss the importance of understanding the unique dynamics of different businesses and industries when considering career progression and salary negotiations. The first step is to have a conversation with your employer about your career goals and workplace expectations. Reflecting on what you want from your workplace and career progression is crucial.

Workplace expectations and opportunities can vary significantly. It's essential to identify the expectations, benchmarks, and opportunities within your specific workplace. This includes understanding the difference between billable hours and hours per week, and how many clients you are expected to manage in a typical 38-hour workweek. Additionally, knowing the expectations tied to your wage is vital.

Many people turn to job search engines like Seek or Indeed to compare salaries. However, it's important to remember that these platforms may not align with industry awards and are not policed for accuracy. It's also crucial to understand whether the listed salaries include superannuation or not. High salaries often come with high expectations, as you need to generate sufficient income for the company. It is crucial to assess the value of all components of positions to make an informed decision.

From a financial perspective, companies divide money in specific ways, often using a 3-4 ratio. We encourage you to do your research, including looking at company websites, to understand how responsibilities align with pay packets. Salaries are not independent of job responsibilities, and it’s important to recognize this when evaluating your own compensation.

When asking for a pay rise, resources and PD, consider key factors and common questions. If your job involves driving, for example, that should be factored into your request. Demonstrating your value before asking for a raise is crucial. Business owners are more likely to agree to a pay rise if they can see tangible outcomes from your work. Think about how you can invest in the business and bring more value.

Adopting a mindset where service comes before money can be beneficial. Ensure that your job description and salary are aligned. If you want a pay rise, you need to go above and beyond your current job description. Be proactive and don't wait until the last minute, as businesses operate on budgets. Having a clear goal in mind and being open to negotiation can help you achieve the salary you desire while maintaining a good relationship with your employer.

Don't be afraid to talk about money. Developing a healthy money mindset is essential, and we reference Lorraine Murphy's, Mike Michalowicz Denise Duffield Thomas, Bent not Broke and Mel browne work on this topic. Budgeting resources like those from Mel Browne, the Barefoot Investor, and books like "Crucial Conversations" can be very helpful. If you want to earn more money, educate yourself and evaluate your current money habits. Often, spending habits remain the same regardless of income level.

21 Apr 2024#9 Finding Your Niche: Exploring Generalist and Specialist Paths in Allied Health00:28:23

In this episode, we delve into the concept of navigating your career journey, considering the span of a career and the various factors that influence it. Whether you're a man or a woman, your career trajectory might differ due to life events like having children, but ultimately, many of us find ourselves working until around 65 years old. It's a considerable chunk of our lives, especially if we start our professional journey at 22, leaving us with approximately 40 years in a given profession. So, how do we keep our motivation and passion alive throughout this time?

We discuss the balance between specialisation and generalisation, a crucial aspect for maintaining enthusiasm in our work. This balance is particularly pertinent for new graduates faced with the daunting question of what career path to pursue. The pressure to have it all figured out can be overwhelming, but our guests shed light on the importance of experimentation and exploration in finding one's true calling.

Em shares her personal journey of specialising in preschool language, highlighting the value of trying out various roles to discover where your interests lie. She warns against the dangers of pigeonholing oneself too early in one's career, advocating instead for a more flexible approach to professional development. Likewise, Liz recounts her experience of initially wanting to work with adults but finding fulfilment in working with children, illustrating how career paths can evolve over time.

Throughout the conversation, we explore the importance of considering different life stages and personal circumstances when planning our career trajectories. Achieving a healthy work-life balance involves finding stability in some areas while embracing change in others. We also touch upon the role of emotional triggers in our career choices, emphasising the need to set boundaries and prioritise our well-being.

Ultimately, this episode encourages listeners to adopt a curious and open mindset, embracing change and recognizing that career journeys are fluid and ever-evolving. Whether you're just starting out in your career or contemplating a shift later in life, there's always room for growth and adaptation.

29 Apr 2024#10 Burnout and Boundaries: It's a Slippery Slope00:57:50

In this episode, we tackle the critical issue of burnout, drawing insights from Liz's personal experience with burnout, suffering a stroke at 33 and what she shares in her burnout presentations on the subject.

Burnout is not just exhaustion; it's an occupational phenomenon characterised by chronic workplace stress that remains unmanaged. This stress can manifest as decreased energy, increased mental distance from one's job, and feelings of ineffectiveness due to an overwhelming workload or too many responsibilities.

The conversation delves into the difference between empathy and compassion, emphasising that while empathy is about feeling with someone, compassion involves taking actionable steps to help. Staying in a constant state of empathy without transitioning to compassion can be dangerous, leading to what is known as compassion fatigue. This involves taking on the emotional and psychological burdens of patients, which can be particularly taxing for healthcare professionals who are naturally empathetic.

We explore the slippery slope of burnout, discussing the challenges faced by both employees and contractors in maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Bonuses and incentives can inadvertently contribute to burnout by encouraging workers to take on more responsibilities without adequate support or boundaries.

The episode also touches upon the paradoxical nature of being a healthcare professional. What makes someone good at their job – empathy, compassion, problem-solving skills – can also be their undoing if they overcompensate for these strengths. Liz shares her personal journey of how her empathetic nature, which initially drove her to become a health professional, eventually led to additional emotional burdens after her stroke. We discuss practical strategies for preventing burnout and maintaining boundaries, such as not taking work home, setting aside decompression time between work and home, and being realistic about what you can manage. Communication is key, especially for certain working structures like having your own business or working as an independent outside employee arrangements where clinicians may feel obligated to be available 24/7. Taking personal accountability and seeking psychological support when needed are also crucial steps in preventing burnout.

This episode serves as a reminder that while hard work and empathy are admirable qualities, they must be balanced with boundaries and self-care to avoid burnout. Being aware, educated, emotionally intelligent, and proactive in maintaining balance are essential for both personal well-being and effective client care. If you feel yourself tipping towards burnout, it's crucial to pull back immediately and refocus on what gives you balance and fulfilment. Join us as we delve into the complexities of burnout and explore ways to foster a healthier, more sustainable approach to work and life.

07 Apr 2024#7 Growing With Grace: Essential Skills for Child Development Professionals00:34:23

In today's episode we talk about the skills that we see as essential being paediatric clinicians.

It is without a doubt that it takes a special kind of health professional to work with kids and we have worked with and trained up so many amazing speechies and exercise physiologists over the years and what we see is that there are two distinct sets of skills that are required for this work.

A person's natural skillset and those skills that are developed over time. We talk about the Natural skillset, being the skills that give someone the ‘permission to play’; they are the natural skills that they possess as a person.

Some of these include:

Permission to Play- Natural skillset

Bubbly

Expressive and playful

Smiles

Warmth

Natural around kids

Calm in chaos

Curious and inquisitive

Confidence around children

Being flexible and adaptable - happy to go off plan and calm in a storm.

Creative, innovation with time, energy, planning, hold yourself and seeing things that aren’t there

See the potential

Be optimistic and positive

Nurturing

Educator

Playful

Ok asking questions

Note that most of these skills are not clinical. They are not technical. We unpack how new grads so often can be wound up with clinical skills and we both take these clinicians through training focussing on connection being the most important factor as when we cant connect we wont be able to share our clinical knowledge.

Then we looked at the developed skillset; the skills that we develop over time and through experience in the role.

These are skills that we don’t expect new grads to have when starting a position and skills that are built on through training and mentoring.

These include:

Calm in chaos- engaging kids creatively

Curious- improvising and finding opportunities to layer in therapy.

Clinical technical skills

Knowledge of research

Communication skills with parents and educators, skills to talk to different audiences and help them understand

Education skills in advocacy, teaching, educating for the profession

Skills in running a group of children and sessions in different settings

Managing behaviour and engaging kids

Engagement with kids more strategically to achieve goals

Learning using all senses, multimodal communication – how do you use all these to engage children

Multitask- Doing three things at once, talking to parent, while managing child, taking data and knowing your goal and where you are going clinically

Scripting for activities and goals

17 Mar 2024#4 Six Steps To Overcome Imposter Syndrome00:33:04

Today on the show, we delved into the concept of imposter syndrome, a term that has gained significant traction in recent years. We explored how stepping out of our comfort zones is essential for growth and development, yet it often triggers feelings of inadequacy and fraudulence, particularly in early career stages when working with children and collaborating with parents, educators and other allied health professionals.

Reflecting on our own personal experiences, we discussed how imposter syndrome wasn't always recognized or labelled, highlighting the way in which the word itself has allowed us to be a little more vulnerable. We emphasized the importance of acknowledging and sitting with these feelings, rather than simply identifying with the label of imposter syndrome.

Throughout the discussion, we highlighted that imposter syndrome is a common experience shared by many, and the key to overcoming it lies in being curious about the underlying emotions without feeling threatened by them.

We looked at some practical strategies including fostering connections and relationships with influential figures in a clinical setting, as well as focusing on your purpose to reframe those tricky feelings of fraudulence. We encouraged our listeners to shift focus away from themselves and towards those they aim to help, recognizing that everyone is preoccupied with their own concerns, rather than scrutinizing others for perceived inadequacies.

23 Jun 2024#15 Feeling Stuck in Perfectionism?00:38:39

In this episode, we explore the intricate relationship between perfectionism and anxiety, particularly how perfectionism can hold you back, often paralleling imposter syndrome. Liz shares her personal journey through her current stage of growth and the discomfort it brings, including panic attacks following her stroke in 2015. She emphasises the importance of naming and bringing these feelings to light, recognizing that they are not reality but mental health triggers. By separating these thoughts from your identity, you gain power over them.

We discuss the critical question: "What story are you telling yourself?" In a high-achieving team, it's essential to be aware of who surrounds you and to run your own race. Gifted children often exhibit higher levels of anxiety and perfectionism, which is part of the process of self-understanding. Fear of making mistakes can lead to overly complicated tasks and halted progress, often manifesting as procrastination and spending excessive time on tasks.

Perfectionism and imposter syndrome are interconnected. Imposter syndrome can lead to perfectionism-driven tendencies, where individuals feel fraudulent and overthink tasks to the point of paralysis. It's crucial to manage these tendencies by being okay with imperfection and understanding that mastery is messy.

We highlight the impact of perfectionism on parenting, where perfectionist parents may project their anxiety onto their children, blocking their ability to learn. Breaking these generational cycles requires healing and mindful communication. The language we use with children, such as saying "that's perfect" or "great job," can significantly impact their self-perception.

Solutions and Strategies:

  • Trust yourself and recall past achievements.
  • Balance evidence-based practices with practical execution.
  • Be aware of your thoughts and do not let negative thoughts dictate your behavior.
  • In moments of doubt, remind yourself of your goals and the impact you wish to achieve.
  • Accept that growth challenges may cause you to shrink back, but perseverance is key.
  • Keep things simple and avoid overthinking.
  • Surround yourself with positive energy and consider an accountability partner.
  • Use templates and systems to keep you on track.
  • Seek professional help from a counselor or psychologist if needed.
  • Implement and execute your plans, even if it means throwing yourself in the deep end to learn and trust yourself.
  • Understand that failure is part of learning and development.
  • Be mindful of the language you use to praise yourself and others.

This is a bonus episode between Lizzy and Emily from the PLA Library. We are in between Season One and Season Two and wanted to continue to provide you with goodness and learnings.

Some key concepts during the conversation:

🔑 Importance of incorporating movement and physical activity, body awareness, stretching, and core exercises into therapy sessions.

🔑 Impact of language on health and the importance of setting up healthy habits.

🔑 The need to raise awareness about the role of EPs (Exercise Physiologists) and their collaboration with other allied health practitioners/professionals specifically in the paediatric sector.

🔑 The difference between OTs (Occupational Therapists) and physiotherapists (physios) in terms of diagnosis and frequency of visits.

🔑 Discussion of the challenges of engaging children and managing behaviour in therapy sessions.

Lizzy recommends to check the Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) website for a list of EPs in the region.

She provides free resources and information on her website. She offers an exercise database which includes 30 different exercises along with dialogue examples, paediatric prescription formulas, and developmental opportunities for each exercise.

Lizzy has two clinics where she provides exercise therapy and support. She has previously been a guest expert and has shared valuable insights and practical strategies for speech sessions. She also does a free master class or webinar a couple of times a year. In this episode, we explore the importance of professional and personal development (PD) as essential components of success, emphasizing the need to lead and master oneself before leading others.

We delve into the concept of "why" – understanding your personal mission and career mission, inspired by Simon Sinek's influential book and video, "Start With Why."

We encourage listeners to reflect on their motivations and identify who is doing what they aspire to do.

We discuss the significance of setting both long-term (5 years) and short-term (1 year) career goals, applying the same principles to personal development as one would with clients.

This involves defining the specific populations you want to work with and setting goals in various aspects of life, including work, personal, health, possessions, and family.

The episode provides practical guidance on how to approach PD, from selecting the right courses and modalities (online, face-to-face, research) to budgeting and implementing what you've learned.

We emphasize the importance of assessing the effectiveness of your PD efforts and refining them over time to ensure continuous growth and development.

We discuss strategies for proposing PD opportunities to employers, including presenting a business plan outlining how you will contribute and serve your peers through your newfound skills.

Researching available PD courses and taking advantage of professional organizations like Speech Pathology Australia, ESSA, OT, and Physio can also be beneficial.

Drawing from our own experiences running courses, we share insights into what we have learned from the process and stress the importance of completion, engagement, and feedback.

This episode aims to empower listeners to take control of their professional and personal development by setting clear goals, selecting appropriate courses and modalities, and effectively communicating their PD needs and contributions to employers.

By adopting a strategic and proactive approach to PD, listeners can pave the way for continued growth, success, and fulfillment in their careers.
