25 Sep 2019 | Episode 1: Welcome…to Monster Island! | 00:15:02
Hello, kaiju lovers! Logo by Tyler SowlesListen as Nathan Marchand, co-creator and season one co-host of the Kaijuvision Radio, regales you with the origin story of his new podcast. It includes a vacation to a resort on the fabled Monster Island (formerly Monsterland), where he met his intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA (who miraculously survived the infamous War in Space), and got a new job as the curator of the Island’s film vault. Between bantering sessions with his detail-obsessed, fact-checking interrupter of a producer, Nathan explains the podcast’s philosophy of film appreciation and lays the groundwork for the upcoming episodes. And what will Nathan, Jimmy, and their many guests be discussing first? The filmography of Monster Island’s other most famous resident: KING KONG! Hold onto your butts! 09 Oct 2019 | Episode 2: The Tourists vs. ‘King Kong’ (1933) | 01:59:58
Hello, kaiju lovers! Our “Kong Quest” begins! Nathan is joined by his core group of Monster Island Tourists—Nick Hayden & Timothy Deal of the Derailed Trains of Thought podcast and Joe & Joy Metter—to discuss one of the greatest movies ever made: 1933’s King Kong. What’s interesting is none of these Tourists had seen this classic film before coming to the Island, so you’ll hear their fresh reactions, opinions, and analyses to the Eighth Wonder’s first and greatest outing. Listen as each of them compete for best (or worst?) joke of the podcast (“No monkeying around!” says Nick). Along the way Jimmy From NASA gets sassy with the Tourists and has to corral a dog dubbed “Teddy Kong,” who keeps trying to make a cameo during the Toku Talk. The Toku Topic for this episode is the Great Depression since the film was made and released at the height of that period and indirectly mentions it several times. Be sure to check out the latest episode of Nick and Tim’s podcast, Derailed Trains of Thought, where they visited Monster Island to discuss destruction as a story element with Nathan as a guest host. Their podcast is marvelous, and Nathan has appeared on multiple episodes. 23 Oct 2019 | Episode 3: The Godzilla Anime Trilogy (Mini-Analysis) | 00:38:53
Hello, kaiju lovers! Welcome to our first minisode! (Well, our second, according to my intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA). This is the first of a series of episodes where I’ll be analyzing films I was unable to cover on my previous podcast. In this one, I’m discussing the divisive Godzilla Anime Trilogy. Fans either love it or hate it. Me? I like it—a lot. I debunk some of the unfair criticisms of the trilogy, but the meat of my analysis is focused on how each of the four races in the trilogy—the Humans, the Bilusaludo, the Exif, and the Houtua—each exemplify different philosophies and how most of them take their worldviews to the extreme. There’s a lot of material here—so much that Monster Island’s Board of Directors calls to say I violated my contract! Listen as Jimmy acts as my agent to keep me from being shot into space (he deserves a bonus for practically being my agent). Here are the podcast episodes I mentioned in the episode. I recommend listening to them—especially the Redeemed Otaku episodes—if you want to hear a review of this trilogy from me. 13 Nov 2019 | Episode 4: Timothy Deal vs. ‘Son of Kong’ | 01:24:02
Hello, kaiju lovers! After Jimmy From NASA flies him back to Indiana to get his microphone, Timothy Deal of the Derailed Trains of Thought podcast returns to Monster Island to continue the “Kong Quest” with Son of Kong, the almost forgotten sequel to King Kong. If the 1933 masterpiece is a grand myth, the sequel is a pleasant bedtime story. Screenwriter Ruth Rose, when talking about writing this film, said, “If you can’t go bigger, go funnier,” which is an apt statement about this film and sequels in general. Nathan and Tim’s lively discussion connects Son of Kong to the Russian film Battleship Potemkin, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day—and gives Jimmy a lot of work for “Jimmy’s Notes.” They also theorize about what happened to “Mrs. Kong”/Kiko’s mother, which actually puts this and the first film into perspective…sorta. The Toku Topic builds off of the previous one with a philosophical discussion of how 1930s filmmakers addressed the Depression in their movies, touching on themes like escapism and collective rage. Here’s the Kaijuvision Radio episode on King Kong vs. Godzilla for you to listen to as part of MIFV’s Kong coverage: Episode 8: King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) (The Japanese Economic Miracle (The Golden 60s)) Read Jimmy’s Notes on this episode here. 27 Nov 2019 | Episode 5: John LeMay Presents ‘King Kong vs. Frankenstein’ & ‘Continuation: King Kong vs. Godzilla’ | 00:28:05
(FYI: This was recorded before the news that 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong would be delayed). Hello, kaiju lovers! In this special “side Kong Quest” ( ), Nathan is joined by author John LeMay (who is a gentleman and a scholar) to talk about two unmade King Kong films with connections to King Kong vs. Godzilla. The first was “King Kong vs. Frankenstein,” a project that special effects legend Willis O’Brien tried to get made in the late 1950s before it ended up at Toho. Then Godzilla and Kong almost had their rematch in the 1960s with Shinichi Sekizawa’s “Continuation: King Kong vs. Godzilla,” where the Eighth Wonder becomes a surrogate parent to a Japanese baby! Hear all about them in this episode! These and many other lost Kong films are covered in great detail in John’s book Kong Unmade: The Lost Films of Skull Island, which is part of Monster Island’s library and one of Nathan’s go-to resources for the podcast. Jimmy From NASA is absent for most of this episode because Kong and Godzilla were upset that Nathan skipped their 1962 monster mash movie, so Jimmy left to calm them down with the ORCA. The thing is, Nathan covered that film on his previous podcast, Kaijuvision Radio. Here’s a link if you want to listen to it before the next episode: Episode 8: King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) (The Japanese Economic Miracle (The Golden 60s)) Also, Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here on Monster Island! 11 Dec 2019 | Episode 6: Nick Hayden vs. ‘King Kong Escapes’ | 01:26:10
Hello, kaiju lovers! In the latest episode of the “Kong Quest” (which is finally mentioned by name on the air!), Nathan is joined once again by author and “Golden Ticket Tourist” Nick Hayden of the Derailed Trains of Thought podcast to discuss the wacky but fun King Kong Escapes. Like with the 1933 film, this is Nick’s first time seeing this 1967 Toho classic, which was the second (and sadly last) of Toho’s Kong films, as it was made in the last year they held the rights to the Eighth Wonder. This is a first for the show as it’s the first tokusatsu film directed by the great Ishiro Honda covered on the podcast. It’s a crazy nexus of ideas borrowed from other productions and some that seemed to anticipate others. For one thing, its villain, Dr. Who, is both a derivation and a precursor to the famous British TV series! Nathan and Nick also note some funny connections to Rankin-Bass’ classic holiday special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer given that they collaborated with Toho on this live-action cartoon. The Toku Topic is how Toho’s Japanese-American co-productions paralleled Japan-America relations. Stay tuned after the credits for a Marvel-style stinger and an important announcement. 25 Dec 2019 | Episode 7: ‘Half Human’ (Mini-Analysis) | 00:24:23
Merry Christmas, kaiju lovers! As part of Nathan’s continuing series on films covered in his absence on Kaijuvision Radio, this mini-sode examines Ishiro Honda’s 1955 film Half Human, which is infamous for being banned by Toho. Heck, it was stashed so far back in the Island’s film vault, it took Goji-kun and Bro Kong (the podcast mascots and possibly Godzilla and Kong’s “little” brothers) a long time to find it for Nathan to watch. Strange as it may sound, it’s serendipitous that this episode was released on Christmas Day because the film takes place partly on New Year’s Day. It follows a group of scientists and students investigating the appearance of the Abominable Snowman in the Japanese Alps, where they encounter a savage tribe who worships the Snowman. Nathan’s analysis focuses on the natives, their parallels to the Ainu (Japan’s indigenous people), and how this portrayal got the film banned. He argues that, despite possible insensitivities, Half Human is unfairly censored and deserves to be viewed by a wider audience. All this plus our first listener feedback letters and the Monster Island Christmas party—wherein Nathan learns that kaiju can sing Christmas carols (or so his intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, tells him even though he hasn’t fixed the ORCA yet). Here’s the Kaijuvision Radio episode on the film: Episode 38: Half Human (1955) (Genetic Origin of the Ainu People). Here’s the blog with the rules for the Destroyer novella giveaway. This episode featured “We Three Kings” by Jay Man (OurMusicBox on YouTube). 08 Jan 2020 | Episode 8: Ben Avery vs. ‘King Kong’ (1976) | 01:53:22
Hello, kaiju lovers! We’re kicking off 2020 with the Eighth Wonder’s return to Hollywood in a film brought about by Italian producer Dino de Laurentiis. Writer/podcaster Ben Avery joins Nathan to discuss the 1976 remake of King Kong starring Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange, which is firmly entrenched in its time and was touted as “the most exciting original motion picture event of all time.” What’s interesting is it straddles the gritty cynicism of early ‘70s films like Dirty Harry and the more hopeful films of the late ‘70s like Star Wars (because no MIFV episode is complete without mentioning that franchise). This was the first time Nathan had seen Kong ‘76 in years, and while he didn’t like it as a teen, he softens to it thanks in part to Ben’s love of it. Their discussion also touches upon the weird love triangle between Dwan, Jack, and Kong; the great but sometimes wonky special effects; and how modern audiences may feel about the film’s climax on the World Trade Center post-9/11. The Toku Topic is the 1973 Energy Crisis since it directly influenced the filmmakers’ decision to have the characters’ expedition be about finding untapped oil reservoirs. Here’s to the big one! 22 Jan 2020 | Episode 9: ‘The Mysterians’ (Mini-Analysis) | 00:27:55
Hello, kaiju lovers! Nathan covers yet another film discussed on his former podcast, Kaijuvision Radio, by Brian Scherschell: Ishiro Honda’s 1957 tokusatsu classic, The Mysterians. While Godzilla (1954) singlehanded created the kaiju and tokusatsu genres, this film arguably ushered in Toho’s “golden age,” which would last for a decade. While Nathan does touch on Moguera, the special effects, and the film’s many influences, the bulk of his analysis is focused on Japan’s relationship with the United Nations, which the nation joined just a year before the film was released. The Mysterians expresses Japan’s—and Honda’s—postwar ideal of “proactive pacifism,” which it saw in the U.N. Throw in a few snarky interruptions from the podcast’s intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, and a random cameo from a psycho-powered dictator, and it’s a typical Wednesday at The Monster Island Film Vault. After that, Nathan dumps out the mailbag to read several iTunes reviews and e-mails from listeners. Speaking of which, be sure to check out the upcoming fan project, Batman Meets Godzilla, one of the craziest yet most intriguing lost projects made famous by John LeMay’s book, The Big Book of Japanese Giant Monster Movies: The Lost Films (which now has a new “mutated” edition). T-SHIRT GIVEAWAY: Everyone who shares the Facebook and Twitter posts for this episode from the podcast’s pages will be entered for a drawing for a Batman Meets Godzilla T-shirt. 12 Feb 2020 | Episode 10: John LeMay vs. ‘King Kong Lives’ | 01:34:53
Hello, kaiju lovers! Despite a slight delay thanks to MIFV mascots Goji-kun and Bro Kong hiding Nathan’s laptop, the unavoidable has happened: King Kong Lives. John LeMay, author of Kong Unmade and other kaiju books, returns to Monster Island to discuss the Godzilla vs. Megalon of the Kong series—and John un-ironically likes it! This ill-fated sequel to Dino de Laurentiis’s 1976 remake stars Linda Hamilton, fresh off of her star-making role in The Terminator, as a scientist who resurrects King Kong with an artificial heart…because that cures falling off of a building. Not only that, he “falls in love” with Lady Kong, a female giant gorilla, which leads to most of the Kong film tropes getting turned on their ears. Also, King Kong eats rednecks. Yep. Nathan goes full-tilt MST3K with this movie, but he riffs because he loves. That is, when he isn’t mediating a conflict between John and the show’s intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA. The Toku Topic is the convoluted King Kong copyright, which came to a head twice when Universal tried to sue Dino de Laurentiis in the 1970s and Nintendo in the early 1980s. Hear all about it in the newest episode of The Monster Island Film Vault! You can buy the hardcover of John’s book Kong Unmade on Amazon. Check out Jimmy’s Notes on this episode! 26 Feb 2020 | Episode 11: ‘Varan the Unbelievable’ (Mini-Analysis) | 00:26:32
Hello, kaiju lovers! In Nathan’s continuing series of mini-sodes on films covered by Bran Scherschel on Kaijuvision Radio after Nathan left the show, he examines Ishiro Honda’s overlooked 1958 kaiju film Varan the Unbelievable (or Daikaiju Baran). While Honda didn’t think much of it (especially after its tumultuous production when the American TV network co-producing it pulled out), it was the first kaiju film written for Toho by the fabled Shinichi Sekizawa. The second half is a by-the-numbers monster movie, but the first half is intriguing because it touches on then contemporary issues with the burakumin, a discriminated social class in Japan. Their name means “village people” (no, not the disco band!), and they were essentially the “untouchables” of Japanese culture for centuries. When seen through that lens, this film offers more than a cool kaiju. After that, Nathan reads some listener feedback, including a letter from someone who offers some clarification on the (in)famous Batman Meets Godzilla script. Speaking of which, Batman Meets Godzilla, one of the craziest yet most intriguing lost projects made famous by John LeMay’s book, The Big Book of Japanese Giant Monster Movies: The Lost Films (which now has a new “mutated” edition), is being adapted into a fan-made comic book miniseries! T-SHIRT GIVEAWAY: Everyone who shares the Facebook and Twitter posts for this episode (or tags the show when they share it themselves) will be entered for a drawing for a Batman Meets Godzilla T-shirt. 11 Mar 2020 | Episode 12: Daniel DiManna vs. ‘King Kong’ (2005) | 02:39:58
Hello, kaiju lovers! It’s an epic episode for an epic movie! No, not that stupid parody film. Nathan is joined by Daniel DiManna, the creator and author of The Godzilla Novelization Project, to discuss Peter Jackson HUGE 2005 remake of King Kong. (Although, Danny had to survive a harrowing trip to Monster Island with the podcast’s intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, and a certain robot dinosaur to do so). Only Peter Jackson, who was fresh off of The Lord of the Rings, could’ve made a three hour film about a giant monkey, er, ape. Nathan and Danny do a deep dive into the film’s characters, themes, and story while struggling not to get Jack Driscoll and Jack Black confused. They freely admit this is the one giant monster movie that makes them cry. They also learn that the young man named Jimmy in this film may or may not be the podcast’s producer. (Confused? Join the club). The Toku Topic is vaudeville since Ann Darrow in this film is a vaudeville performer before getting work on Carl Denham’s movie. Nathan promises to not make a habit of producing episodes that cross what Danny calls “the Kurosawa threshold.” Timestamps: Intro: 0:00-6:08 Entertaining Info Dump: 6:08-15:29 Toku Talk: 15:29-1:55:52 Toku Topic: 1:55:52-2:29:43 Outro: 2:29:43-end © 2020 Moonlighting Ninjas Media Bibliography/Further Reading:

25 Mar 2020 | Episode 13: ‘The Three Treasures’ (Mini-Analysis) | 00:28:53
Hello, kaiju lovers! The unintentional “epic films month” continues with 1959’s The Three Treasures (aka The Birth of Japan), but thankfully this episode doesn’t cross the “Kurosawa threshold.” This is a religious epic in the vein of Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments except it’s about Shinto. It tells the tale of Prince Yamato Takeru (played by the always awesome Toshiro Mifune), the legendary 13th emperor of Japan (who’s being covered in our 13th episode…oh boy…). Interspersed throughout the film are vignettes depicting stories from Japanese mythology that parallel the prince’s life. Nathan zeroes in on several of the film’s story elements, including the Japanese creation myth, the Imperial Regalia of Japan, and Yamata no Orochi the eight-headed dragon. There’s so much that could be said about this film, Nathan may have to do a follow-up with Rev. Mifune (no relation to Toshiro Mifune) or the guys at The Kaiju Apostle. Nathan then reads yet more feedback clarifying the Batman Meets Godzilla story treatment—or rather, the Twitter war that almost broke out over it. 01 Apr 2020 | Bonus Episode #1: Jimmy From NASA Presents ‘Space Kong’ | 00:10:48
Hey, guys! The Vault is now under new management—Jimmy From NASA! Yes, after starting a betting pool during Nathan’s livestream of Override: Mech City Brawl Friday night and cleaning out the Monster Island Board of Directors, Jimmy became the new host of the podcast but kept Nathan on as his producer. Nathan is still a bit sore about that, as you’ll hear, but Jimmy is sure he’ll get over it. For his first episode, Jimmy is discussing his favorite unmade Kong film: “Space Kong.” This was a wild idea that came about in the 1960s while Merian C. Cooper was corresponding with comic book publisher Western/Gold Key Comics to produce a comic adaptation of original film and a sequel. This would’ve featured the children of the original characters and Carl Denham still young from finding the Fountain of Youth. Cooper suggested setting it on another planet with “King Kong reincarnated.” While Jimmy first learned of this lost project through a book written by his (first) flame war nemesis, John LeMay, he showed up that know-it-all by buying Cooper’s long lost story treatment for this proposed film on eBay using his newfound wealth. Be the first to hear about it in today’s episode! Here’s Nathan’s transcript of Episode 14. 08 Apr 2020 | Episode 14 – Dallas Mora vs. ‘Kong: Skull Island’ | 02:09:18
Hello, kaiju lovers! We’ve finally reached the MonsterVerse! After surviving in the wilds of Monster Island for two months, Dallas Mora from Geek Devotions joins Nathan to discuss the Eighth Wonder’s latest cinematic adventure, Kong: Skull Island. This pulpy adventure movie directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts took Kong in a whole new direction, dropping his lovesickness and making him a benevolent but savage protector. Nathan and Dallas dive headlong into the film’s rich backstory as explored in its comic book prequel, Skull Island: The Birth of Kong; discuss the colorful cast of characters played by a troupe of Marvel movie actors; and realize that Kong is the Batman of the MonsterVerse. The Toku Topic is the end of the Vietnam War, which leads to a poignant discussion that touches on pacifism, “just war” theory, and the treatment of war veterans (like the podcast’s intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA). A quick note: Due to Godzilla vs. Kong’s release being delayed to November, we’ll be taking a detour from the “Kong Quest” (ba-dum-ching) until then by covering films featuring other “kaiju kings.” Listen to find out who’s first! Hello, kaiju lovers! HOLY INTERVIEW, BATMAN! You’ve heard it being promoted for several months on the show, and now you’ll get the full story. In another special bonus episode for all of you in quarantine because of coronavirus, Nathan and his intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, are joined by Eric Elliott, the mastermind behind the Batman Meets Godzilla fan comic. As in the Adam West Batman and the Showa Godzilla! Hear Eric talk about the secret origins of this project that’s based on as an unmade film from the mid-1960s with story treatments written by Batman ’66 producer William Dozier and possibly even Shinichi Sekizawa. Then the Dynamic Duo discuss the art of sequential storytelling in comics, the mystery of the Sekizawa treatment, adapting the treatment for a three-issue comic, and who would win a dance-off between Batman and Godzilla. Tune in next week for a regular episode—same kaiju time, same kaiju channel! Read the comic on its official website. Follow the series on Twitter and Facebook. Read about this unmade film in John LeMay’s book, The Big Book of Japanese Giant Monster Movies: The Lost Films (Mutated Edition). 22 Apr 2020 | Episode 15: ‘Battle in Outer Space’ (with Luke Jaconetti) | 01:28:14
Hello, kaiju lovers! Today’s episode is a little different. Think of it as an extended “mini-analysis.” It’s also the first film MIFV has covered that features no kaiju. Luke Jaconetti, the host of the Earth Destruction Directive podcast (and owner of an impossible-to-spell surname), joins Nathan to discuss the film featuring everyone not working on The Three Treasures in 1959: Battle in Outer Space. The podcast’s producer, Jimmy From NASA, loves this film because it’s the second entry in what he calls a “pseudo-trilogy.” After Luke recounts his globetrotting adventure getting to Monster Island despite worldwide travel bans, he and Nathan discuss how what this film lacks in character it more than makes up for with showmanship and spectacle. It was a snapshot of the world at the beginning of the Space Race and the Cold War. They connect it to films like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, Star Wars, and even Toy Story 2! They also discuss whether or not the invading aliens, the Natal, could be interpreted as an anti-American commentary. Are you stuck in quarantine? Enjoy some quality entertainment and enlightenment through this tokusatsu epic! This was made as a supplement to this episode of Kaijuvision Radio, which featured Danny DiManna as Brian Scherschel’s guest host: Episode 42: Battle in Outer Space (1959) (The Space Race between the US and the USSR). 29 Apr 2020 | Bonus Episode #3: An Excerpt from ‘Destroyer’ | 00:15:18
Hello, kaiju lovers! For the final bonus episode of April to help you all survive quarantine, Nathan is reading a chapter from his kaiju novella, Destroyer, which he co-wrote with Natasha Hayden, Nick Hayden, and Timothy Deal (two of whom you’ve heard on the podcast). Specifically, it’s “Chapter 6: Berserk” (a detail he forgot to mention in the episode). You’ll also hear how this book was written as part of a year-long group project that started in a little place called—no joke—Story, Indiana. It was also inspired by a Godzilla film. Which one? Listen to find out! (Also, forgive Nathan for having a German accent that sounds more like a Russian accent. ). Nathan also posted this chapter on the podcast website a few months back. Buy the book on Amazon in paperback and on Kindle. This episode features the song “Mechagodzilla Theme (Remade Akira Ifukube Score)” by Phillip Anderson, which is a remake of “Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II Main Titles” by Akira Ifukube. 13 May 2020 | Episode 16: Bex vs. ‘Rebirth of Mothra’ | 02:16:56
Hello, kaiju lovers! Today we’re giving you something you perhaps didn’t know you wanted—a deep dive into Rebirth of Mothra, the first of a trilogy produced by Toho after retiring Godzilla (again). Depending on how you feel about this movie, you may love or hate this episode. What you will love, though, is the Tourist joining Nathan this week is none other than Bex from Redeemed Otaku. Since Nathan appeared on her podcast to discuss the Godzilla Anime Trilogy, he’s having her on three episodes as part of the “Summer of Mothra” while we all await the release of Godzilla vs. Kong (yes, much to anime-loving Bex’s chagrin, she’s filler). Their spirited discussion references and compares this film to a multitude of unrelated media, including The Lion King, Power Rangers, The Neverending Story, Sentinels of the Multiverse (a card game), and Panzer Dragoon(a video game). It’s quite meme-tastic with catchphrases like, “lightning and lasers,” and Nathan’s favorite, “Deus ex Mothrica” (he has issues with the movie’s ending). The Toku Topic is deforestation in Japan. While that may not sound exciting, it has deep connections to the movie and the Japanese national spirit. All this plus some Jimmy From NASA antics and more in the latest episode of MIFV! Here are the Redeemed Otaku episodes Nathan (and his friend Eric Anderson) appeared on to discuss the Godzilla Anime Trilogy: Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle Godzilla: The Planet Eater ANNOUNCEMENT: We now have a Patreon! 27 May 2020 | Episode 17: ‘The Last War’ (Mini-Analysis) | 00:29:21
Hello, kaiju lovers! Except today’s episode isn’t about giant monsters. Heck, it’s barely about tokusatsu. Nathan is analyzing the criminally underseen 1961 antiwar drama The Last War. While most of the creative team behind the camera aren’t the ones usually followed by kaiju/toku fans, there are several familiar faces in front of the camera: Frankie Sakai (Mothra), Yuriko Hoshi (Mothra vs. Godzilla, etc.), and Akira Takarada (too many to list). This film depicts a middle class Japanese family navigating everyday life interspersed with Japanese government officials and foreign soldiers trying to avoid World War III. It is a perfect snapshot of the Japanese national spirit at that moment in time and, Nathan argues, is the precursor to 1984’s The Return of Godzilla. As part of his analysis, Nathan reads the Bible passage quoted in the film (plus the following two verses that would’ve offered some hope) and a John Bradley poem that would’ve been perfect for the end of the film. All this plus Nathan opens the mailbag to answer some listener feedback! This is meant to supplement this episode of Kaijuvision Radio, which featured the fantastic Danny DiManna: Episode 43: The Last War (1961) (NATO) (The North Atlantic Treaty Organization). I’d like to give a shout-out to our Patreon patrons Travis Alexander (host of Kaiju Weekly), Danny DiManna, and elizilla13! Thanks for your support! Read Jimmy’s Notes on this episode. 10 Jun 2020 | Episode 18: Bex vs. ‘Rebirth of Mothra II’ | 01:48:48
Hello, kaiju lovers! The “Summer of Mothra” continues with Rebirth of Mothra II—the valley between two short mountains in the ‘90s Mothra trilogy. Once again Nathan is joined by Bex from the Redeemed Otaku podcast, and they try their hardest to do a deep dive on a shallow movie. While the first movie had an obvious environmental theme, this one barely gives 20 seconds of screen time to anything substantial. Even Belvera and Elias aren’t as exciting this time around. Then there’s Ghogo/Gogo/Go-Go (aka “Japanese Furby”), the “token cute thing” whose plushy Bex has no interest in buying because, well, magic urine. Yeah…. But nothing can prepare you for the Shyamalan twist at the end of this episode. Nathan and his intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, never saw it coming. Also, Jimmy introduces his new garage assistant, who’s either popular or infamous, depending on who you talk to. Here’s the Kaijuvision Radio episode Nathan mentioned: Episode 19: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) (The Reversion of Okinawa: History and Culture). 24 Jun 2020 | Episode 19: ‘Gorath’ (feat. Jack “GMan” Hudgens) | 01:00:02
Hello, kaiju lovers! Before Armageddon, before Star Trek: The Motion Picture, there was Gorath. Nathan is joined by the most loved and hated film critic in the kaiju community, Jack “GMan” Hudgens, to discuss this Toho classic that has been described as the lovechild of Mothra (1961) and The Last War. While it isn’t the most exciting film, Nathan and GMan explore how its theme of unity is a timeless message, and one that people need to hear now more than ever. Along the way, they compare this to Star Trek and H.P. Lovecraft stories and discuss how Maguma the giant walrus has done nothing but get shoehorned into stories he didn’t need to be in. Also, GMan gets into a bar fight with Jimmy From NASA. Yep. This is meant to supplement this episode of Kaijuvision Radio: Episode 44: Gorath (1962) (Near Earth Objects/Science of Gorath). I’d like to give a shout-out to our Patreon patrons Travis Alexander (host of Kaiju Weekly), Danny DiManna, elizilla13 and Joejira! Thanks for your support! 08 Jul 2020 | Episode 20: Bex vs. ‘Rebirth of Mothra III’ | 02:23:30
Hello, kaiju lovers! Twelve-centimeter girls, tiny robot dragons, and redemption—and we’re not talking about the movie! After some shenanigans with Jimmy From NASA’s teleporter, Nathan and resident “Mothrian” Bex (Redeemed Otaku podcast) finish the “Summer of Mothra” with the surprisingly good Rebirth of Mothra III. Although, maybe they’re just riding high on Bex’s hyperbolic enthusiasm over this movie. But it isn’t hard to improve on the empty, fluffy whimsy of the second one. There’s a lot of meat (bubble) to chew on thematically. Not to mention it also features one of the best-looking King Ghidorahs ever, time travel, and dinosaur puppets. However, Bex gets so carried away with her newfound faith in Mothra, she gets a visit from Monster Island’s chaplain, Rev. Mifune! Uh-oh…. For the first time, we’re covering not one but two Toku Topics: the hikikimori and Aokigahara (Aoki Forest). The child hero, Shota, is likely a member of the former, and much of the movie is set in that infamous forest. It’s an episode that spans the emotional gamut, that’s for sure! BE SURE TO LISTEN UNTIL AFTER THE CREDITS! 22 Jul 2020 | Episode 21: ‘Matango’ (Mini-Analysis) | 00:33:40
Hello, kaiju lovers! An artsy Japanese horror film about mushrooms based on a British short story? That’s sounds insane enough to work! Despite getting slapped with the schlocky English title, “Attack of the Mushroom People,” Matango ranks as one of director Ishiro Honda’s greatest achievements in tokustasu filmmaking. Screenwriter Takeshi Kimura considered it to be his magnum opus. It’s a story replete with subtlety and symbolism, an indictment of Japan’s newfound opulence and decadence in the early 1960s, and it’s as relevant now for any audience as it was back then. It’s such an important film, Nathan and his intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, interview the only scientist on Monster Island’s who’s brave and/or crazy enough to study the Matango—with frightening results! Featuring Daniel DiManna as the voice of Dr. Dante Dourif. Episode image created by Michael Hamilton. Check out his podcast, The Kaiju Groupie. Hello, kaiju lovers! As a special Fifth Wednesday Bonus Episode (which will become a regular feature of the show), I interviewed SciFi Japan writer Ben Chaffins about his new book, Discovering Tokusatsu. In it he chronicles his many quests to get interviews with high-profile people working in tokusatsu filmmaking. You’ll hear about how Ben got his gig at SciFi Japan, why he wrote the book, and how much of a “stan” he is for Ultraman: The Next and Ultraman Nexus (whose special effects director he interviewed for an exclusive chapter in this book). 12 Aug 2020 | Episode 22: The Metters vs. ‘Daimajin’ | 01:39:20
Hello, kaiju lovers! Despite some recording/broadcasting issues with a new microphone (which will be remedied for future episodes), Nathan was joined once again by his friends Joe and Joy Metter, who were vacationing on Monster Island. They started the “Daimajin Days” by screening and discussing the first film in Daiei’s Daimajin trilogy from 1966. These films combine the kaiju and chanbara (“samurai”) genres to create some of the most unique examples of both. While Joe and Joy aren’t connoisseurs of kaiju, they are fans of samurai films. They, along with Nathan, connect this film to Rurouni Kenshin, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and of course Star Wars. (You can fill that space on your MIFV bingo card this week). Also making a return is their dog Teddy Kong, and he brought his friend, Bitzilla. You’ll hear them several times during the episode. Teddy really wanted to see Gamera for some reason. (Because he was hungry for turtle meat?) The only buzzkill—besides the recording issues—was MIFV’s intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, butting heads with Joy over sword fighting. Geez. Since this is a period piece, the Toku Topics are the Sengoku Period of Japanese history and the coming of Christianity to Japan. We’d like to give a shout-out to our Patreon patrons Travis Alexander and Michael “The Kaiju Groupie” Hamilton (co-hosts of Kaiju Weekly), Danny DiManna (Godzilla Novelization Project), Eli Harris, and Bex (host of the Redeemed Otaku) (who joined just before this episode was posted)! 26 Aug 2020 | Episode 23: ‘Atragon’ (Mini-Analysis) | 00:31:27
Hello, kaiju lovers! This month’s mini-sode is yet another excerpt from the paper Nathan wrote for his Ishiro Honda independent study in grad school, and it’s on one of his favorite tokusatsu films: Atragon. This Jules Verne-ian sci-fi adventure story has deep connections to the Japanese national spirit as it was inspired by a militaristic 1899 novel and the ongoing newspaper stories about World War II stragglers being found on Pacific islands. The film also comments on resurgent Japanese nationalism in the early 1960s. All this plus listener feedback, and MIFV’s intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, tells a bit of his story about taking the Gotengo (the flying super-sub in the film) for a joyride in the ’80s. (If you want to hear the entire story, listen to Kaiju Weekly episode 38). And much to Nathan’s annoyance, Jimmy relays an outrageous announcement from the Monster Island Board of Directors about Godzilla vs. Kong. Episode thumbnail created by Michael Hamilton. 09 Sep 2020 | Episode 24: The Metters vs. ‘Return of Daimjain’ | 01:38:26
Hello, kaiju lovers! We have many happy (and not-so-happy) returns in this episode. Nathan’s friends Joe and Joy Metter are back to continue the “Daimajin Days” by discussing Return of Daimajin. They also brought their dogs, Teddy Kong and Bitzilla, although they’re a little quieter this time around. Regardless, this is the second of the Daimajin trilogy from 1966, and while it’s mostly a rehash of the first film that doesn’t quite rise to its heights (until maybe the last 10-15 minutes), it does bring a few new things to the table. These include a lake parting that rivals The Ten Commandments, a Daimajin with a less gray morality scale, and villains who believe in the supernatural and tremble. Unfortunately, MIFV’s intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, continues doubt Joy’s swordfighting ability. To test her mettle, he sics certain winged gremlins from the future on her—with surprising results! All this plus the Toku Topics is Shintoism, Shinto shrines, and torii gates since all those factor into this film. Episode image created by Michael Hamilton. Hello, kaiju lovers! Making his third trip to Monster Island—but his first appearance on MIFV—is none other than the Kaiju Groupie himself, Michael Hamilton. He paid Nathan and Jimmy a visit to discuss Dogora, the Space Monster, which was one of three kaiju films released in 1964 by Toho. The titular space squid is a nightmare straight out of an H.P. Lovecraft story—minus the sorta lame weakness. (To quote Batman, “Bees. My god.”) Nathan and Michael also discuss Japan’s infamous mafia, the Yakuza, since there are elements of it in this film. 30 Sep 2020 | Bonus Episode #5: First Anniversary Special | 02:24:53
Hello, kaiju lovers! Today’s special bonus episode is long, but can you blame us? It’s for MIFV’s first anniversary! Nathan makes a rare OOC (out of character) appearance and is joined by Patron and former guest Danny DiManna, author/creator of the Godzilla Novelization Project, to party like 2020 is finally over. In the first half, they present a “George Lucas extended version” of their Kaiju Con-Line presentation, which was titled “The Original MCU: Connecting Showa Era Continuity.” Essentially, they weave 26 of Toho’s tokusatsu movies (and one TV series) into a Marvel-style shared universe. Then for the second half, they play, read, and discuss feedback from listeners who shared their favorite episodes and moments from the podcast’s first year—including two messages from the other side of the fourth wall! Two words: multiversal madness! This is followed by several big announcements, including the theme for season two of MIFV coming in 2021. You don’t want to miss it! Here’s a link to comedy of errors that was Nathan and Danny’s Kaiju Con-Line presentation. Here’s a link to “Meister Titano,” the unofficial future of the Showaverse. 14 Oct 2020 | Episode 26: The Metters vs. ‘Daimajin Strikes Again’ | 01:35:28
Hello, kaiju lovers! The “Daimajin Days” come to a close with Joe and Joy Metter returning to discuss Daimajin Strikes Again. The final film of the Daimajin trilogy, while it has the same basic set-up with an evil lord oppressing the people, focuses on four boys who set out to rescue their commoner fathers and brothers from slavery. The Metters’ dogs Teddy Kong and Bitzilla make more cameos as they and Nathan make frequent comparisons between this film and Lord of the Rings, Naruto, and even X-Men! All the while MIFV’s intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, continues to antagonize Joy—which comes to a head in an epic post-credit scene! Today’s Toku Topic builds on the previous one by discussing kami (Japanese spirits and gods). We’d like to give a shout-out to our Patreon patrons Travis Alexander and Michael Hamilton (co-hosts of Kaiju Weekly); Danny DiManna (author/creator of the Godzilla Novelization Project); Eli Harris (elizilla13); Chris Cooke (host of One Cross Radio), and Bex from Redeemed Otaku! 28 Oct 2020 | Episode 27: ‘Frankenstein Conquers the World’ (feat. Travis Alexander) | 01:07:06
Hello, kaiju lovers! “FRONKENSTEEN! FRONKENSTEEN!” In what has to be a providential “accident,” our Halloween episode is the perfect kaiju film for the spookiest time of the year: Frankenstein Conquers the World. Nathan is joined by Travis Alexander, co-host of Kaiju Weekly and the biggest Baragon fan we know (#Justice4Baragon), to discuss this wild if uneven Toho classic directed by Ishiro Honda. We discuss the film’s relation to the hibakusha, the discriminated survivors of the atomic bombings, because Frankenstein’s plight in the film mirrors their real-life struggles. Also, Travis gets to meet Godzilla’s bumbling nephew, Godzooky (he’s practically Travis’s spirit animal), who helps Jimmy From NASA in the producer booth because he’s still reeling from his beatdown at the hands of Daimajin. Episode image created by Michael Hamilton. We’d like to give a shout-out to our Patreon patrons Travis Alexander (of course) and Michael Hamilton (co-hosts of Kaiju Weekly); Danny DiManna (author/creator of the Godzilla Novelization Project); Eli Harris (elizilla13); Chris Cooke (host of One Cross Radio), and Bex from Redeemed Otaku! 11 Nov 2020 | Episode 28: Nick Hayden vs. ‘The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms’ | 01:52:55
Hello, kaiju lovers! The Beast! The Beast! THE BEAST! From 20,000 Fathoms! Nathan is joined by his friend and regular Monster Island Tourist Nick Hayden for the first Ray Harryhausen film covered on MIFV: The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. This 1953 classic—the Jaws of its time, as Nick says—is one of the seminal films in the kaiju genre. It was the first “atomic monster” movie. Without it, we may have not gotten Godzilla in 1954. It was “suggested by” a Ray Bradbury story, which delights Nathan and Nick as both writers and classic lit nerds. Also, if you’re looking for quirky band names, this is the episode for you! So, join them for the final full-length film discussion of the season—despite Jimmy From NASA’s claims of a special Godzilla vs. Kong premiere on the Island in a few weeks. The Toku Topics are a brief history of nuclear tests and a brief history of amusement parks since both factor into this film. 25 Nov 2020 | Episode 29: ‘War of the Gargantuas’ (feat. Ben Chaffins) | 00:47:15
Hello, kaiju lovers! In this episode, Nathan is joined by Sci-Fi Japan writer Ben Chaffins to discuss what is, honestly, an overrated classic: War of the Gargantuas. This “pseudo-sequel” to Frankenstein Conquers the World outdoes its predecessor in only one way: the kaiju. Sanda and Gaira are the best characters in the movie, which is sad given that it stars Toho staples Kumi Mizuno, Kenji Sahara, and Nobuo Nakamura. Unfortunately, it also features a belligerently apathetic Russ Tamblyn walking around like a disinterested robot—on purpose. You’ll hear Ben and I discuss the farfetched but interesting interpretations of what, no joke, is apparently Brad Pitt and Quentin Tarantino’s favorite monster movie, and those interpretations include connections to Cain & Abel, “The Sea Boy and the Mountain Boy,” the Vietnam War, and Japan’s national identity. Also, Jimmy was on “paid leave,” so everyone’s favorite superhero robot, Jet Jaguar, filled in for him in the producer booth this episode. Check out the Shin Godzilla and GMK article by Jack “GMan” Hudgens that Ben and Nathan mentioned here. Episode image created by Michael Hamilton. 09 Dec 2020 | Episode 30: ‘Latitude Zero’ (Mini-Analysis) | 00:37:57
Hello, kaiju lovers! This week’s episode is a “traditional” mini-analysis of Latitude Zero, an almost obscure 1969 Toho science fiction film directed by Ishiro Honda, who probably had to take a dip in the “Bath of Immunity” to endure the stress of making it. To say it was harrowing would be an understatement. This strange American/Japanese co-production has a troubled history full of clashing sensibilities and creative differences (which you can hear more about in MIFV episode six). However, the main topic of the episode is the concept of utopia because Latitude Zero seems to be a rare example in fiction of a successful one. Spoiler warning: Nathan doesn’t buy it. Afterward, Nathan and Jimmy are visited by the Monster Island Board of Directors’ executive assistant, Ms. Perkins, who is the Island’s head of PR. She wanted to discuss recent “fake news” being spread by Jimmy From NASA and also announce the Board’s decision on Nathan’s proposals for season two of MIFV. All this plus listener feedback! This episode features Celeste Mora as Ms. Perkins (Twitter: @VOCelesteMora). The song heard in the episode is “Opening the Way” by Pablo Coma, which is a remix from the video game Shadow of the Colossus. It is from the OCRemix album, BadAss Boss Themes: Volume III. The episode thumbnail was created by Michael Hamilton. 23 Dec 2020 | Episode 31: ‘Space Amoeba’ (feat. Giant Monster BS) | 01:08:09
Hello. kaiju lovers! The end has come…for MIFV’s first season, that is. It was supposed to be an epic episode on Godzilla vs. Kong…but instead Nathan is joined by Matt and Gratton from the “Giant Monster Ben Shapiro,” er, “BS” podcast to discuss Space Amoeba (aka Yog, Monster from Space), a weird lesser classic from the Toho tokusatsu library. Released in 1970, it marked a shift in the Showa era for Toho films. This was the year special effects wizard Eiji Tsuburaya died, the studio contract system was discontinued in Japan, and Ishiro Honda left Toho, just to name a few big changes. Jet Jaguar hung out with the intrepid Jimmy From NASA in the producer booth to act as a “dump button” in case the GMBS boys went full-tilt HBO on a family show. They along with Nathan discuss the film’s quirky characters and plot, its three well-executed but almost forgotten monsters, and the wonders of the “Weedmobile” before Jimmy is called away to quell a rowdy Godzilla and Kong with his newly rebuilt Mechani-Kong. That goes about as well as you’d expect, so Nathan, Matt, and Gratton have to pilot another giant robot to save his intrepidness. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, kaiju lovers! Read Jimmy’s Notes on this episode. Listen to Matt and Gratton’s episode on Space Amoeba. The prologue and epilogue were written by Nathan Marchand. This episode features sound effects sourced from www.FreeSound.org, Brand Name Audio, and the Pipeworks/Atari Godzilla video games. The music tracks heard in this episode are “Global Defense Force: Moguera” by Heavy Melody Music (from the Godzilla Unleashed OST) and “King Kong 2 – Main Theme (Metal Cover)” by Sharp Rain Music. 30 Dec 2020 | Bonus Episode 6: Power Rangers In Space – Countdown to Destruction, Part 2′ (feat. Chris Cooke) | 00:50:25
Hello, kaiju (and toku) lovers! Nathan has been mandated by the Board to archive episodes of Power Rangers in the film vault. Their executive assistant, Ms. Perkins, was particularly insistent on him starting with Power Rangers In Space, for some reason. So, as a special bonus episode to close out 2020 and season one, Nathan and Chris Cooke (host of “One Cross Radio”) recorded a pair of watch-along episodes for that series’ two-part finale, “Countdown to Destruction.” While Chris is a “Power Fan,” Nathan went into this two-parter relatively cold, so you’ll hear his honest reactions live. Chris and Nathan also mention fun factoids about this epic episode as well as the series itself and the Power Rangers franchise (including a possible relative of Nate’s who served as a screenwriter and story editor on it!) MIFV’s intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, pipes in a few times and accuses Nathan of having a crush on the show’s big bad, Astronema, which earns him some potent sass. Stay tuned after the credits to hear the return of MIFV’s mascots—and the introduction of another one! To hear part one of this watch-along, check out the latest episode of One Cross Radio. 13 Jan 2021 | Episode 32: The MSTies vs. ‘Gamera the Giant Monster’ (feat. Nick Hayden and Timothy Deal) | 01:43:51
Hello, kaiju lovers! And welcome to MIFV season two! Much to Nate’s chagrin, the Board-mandated “Year of Gamera” begins with the “freakishly mediocre” 1965 movie Gamera the Giant Monsters (or Daikaiju Gamera). So saddened by this is Nate that he visits the Monster Island Chapel and speaks with Rev. Mifune, the Island’s chaplain. The reverend suggests watching the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes that featured Gamera films so Nate could at least get a good laugh watching them. But when Nate meets up with his friends, first season two Tourists Nick Hayden and Timothy Deal of the Derailed Trains of Thought podcast, they receive a voicemail from the Board’s executive assistant, Ms. Perkins, saying the Tourists can watch the MST3K episodes but Nate must watch the original Japanese cuts so they can compare notes. Talk about a buzzkill! The first Toku Topic of 2021 is energy consumption in Japan because Nate read an essay that argues Gamera represents that in this movie. Read Jimmy’s Notes on this episode. Featuring the voices of: -Nate Chen as Rev. Mifune –Celeste Mora as Ms. Perkins Prologue and voicemail scripts by Nathan Marchand. Music: “A Maiden’s Prayer” by RebeccaETripp (OCRemix) Sound FX sourced from Freesound.org, including “Running Loud” by dersuperanton. The episode thumbnail was created by Michael Hamilton. 27 Jan 2021 | Episode 33: ‘Submersion of Japan’ (feat. Adam Noyes) | 01:02:21
Hello, kaiju lovers! Nate is joined by podcaster/YouTuber/filmmaker Adam Noyes to cover something a bit different this week: the original 1973 tokusatsu disaster film Submersion of Japan (aka Japan Sinks). Think of it as a kaiju film without a kaiju. It’s based a novel by Sakyo Komatsu, who Adam describes as “the Japanese Michael Crichton.” The novel was a blockbuster, and this film was an even bigger hit. You can tell this was what Toho invested most of their money into and not Godzilla vs. Megalon that year. Adam and Nate discuss the film’s better-than-Hollywood special effects, the horribly truncated and re-edited U.S. version called Tidal Wave made by Roger Corman, and the film’s wrestling with Japanese national identity, among other things. Also, Nate’s “pseudo-sister” magical girl superheroine clone, Jessica, meets him just before the broadcast to let him know she just moved back to Monster Island. He’s…overjoyed. Read Jimmy’s Notes on this episode. Featuring Sarah Marchand as the voice of Jessica Shaw. Prologue script by Nathan Marchand. Music: “A weird thing” by Chiro. Sound FX sourced from Freesound.org. 10 Feb 2021 | Episode 34: The MSTies vs. ‘Gamera vs. Barugon’ (feat. Joe and Joy Metter) | 01:46:44
Hello, kaiju lovers! The Year of Gamera continues. (Yay?) Nate is joined by his friends Joe and Joy Metter to discuss the outlier of the Showa Gamera series, Gamera vs. Barugon. It’s the one that was actually aimed at an adult audience—and it flopped. As usual, the Tourists get to see the MST3K episode—which has Nate’s favorite line of those episodes—while Nate has to watch the original Japanese version. Even with Joel and the Bots’ riffs, Joe and Joy say they would’ve preferred to watch it subtitled! Thanks to a combination of a “monster mic” and the ORCA, Jimmy was able to get Barugon himself to interrupt a few times, but Nate thinks the ORCA’s translations were dubious, at best. The Toku Topic is the New Guinea Campaign because several characters in the film fought during that and the film takes place partly on that island. Beforehand, Nate, Jimmy, and Jet Jaguar are visited by William H. George III, Esquire, the special envoy to the Monster Island Board of Directors (MIBOD). It is he, and not Ms. Perkins, who brings the Board’s latest press release for Nate to read on the air. He also makes it abundantly clear the Board didn’t appreciate Nate’s “shenanigans” at the Gamera: King of the Monsters Banquet a few weeks ago. Read Jimmy’s Notes on this episode. Featuring Michael Hamilton as the voice of William H. George III. Prologue written by Nathan Marchand and Michael Hamilton. 24 Feb 2021 | Episode 35: ‘Prophecies of Nostradamus’ (feat. John LeMay) | 01:11:30
Hello, kaiju lovers! Jimmy’s (former?) flame war nemesis, tokustasu scholar John LeMay, returns to discuss the second banned film to be covered on MIFV: Prophecies of Nostradamus. This infamous disaster film—which is as different from Submersion of Japan as night is from day—was Toho’s biggest hit of 1974 and features the last appearance by Takeshi Shimura in a Toho tokusatsu film, which only makes its banishment to the back of the vault all the more puzzling. Nate and John explain that the film was banned because of a 30-second scene (that wasn’t even real!) featuring “Soft-Bodied Humans” that was seen as offensive to atomic bombing survivors. Nate also gives a history lesson on who the popular but misunderstood French seer Nostradamus was and his book of prophecies, which inspired this bizarre film. Yes, we know that this episode went over the Board-mandated time limit for “mini-sodes”—and we don’t care! You can buy John’s latest books here and here on Amazon. 05 Mar 2021 | Special Report #1 – ‘Pacific Rim: The Black’ (Season 1) | 00:29:46
In the first of what I’m calling “Special Reports,” I give my immediate thoughts on the new Netflix anime series, Pacific Rim: The Black. I was supposed to review it on Redeemed Otaku with my friend Bex, but that ended up not working out. As someone who adores the original film but hates the sequel (Uprising), I was surprised by how good this show was, even when it used some elements from Uprising. Be warned: about halfway in, I dive into spoiler territory, so avoid that if you haven’t seen the show. Will I ever cover this as a regular episode? Only time will tell. I put this episode together quickly, so it doesn’t have the usual polished and tight editing normal episodes have. 10 Mar 2021 | Episode 36: The MSTies vs. ‘Gamera vs. Gyaos’ (feat. Michael Hamilton and Damon Noyes) | 02:16:16
Hello, kaiju lovers! Nate and his guests, MIFV MAX members Michael Hamilton (co-host of Kaiju Weekly and The Kaiju Groupie) and Damon Noyes, reach the peak of the Showa Gamera series—which isn’t as high as Nate wants it to be. (Or does he just want to get high?) Once again as part of the Board-mandated “Year of Gamera,” the Tourists get to watch the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode featuring this film while Nate must view the original Japanese version to compare notes. Even so, Nate riffs his way through the episode so the Stockholm syndrome doesn’t set in. Michael sighs almost as much as he talks with all the jokes Nate and Damon drop about “gassy Gyaos nipples” and “plane murder.” You’d almost think Nate was enjoying himself. It’s a great act. The Toku Topic for this episode is the Sanrizuka Struggle, which was a movement against the construction of Narita Airport. It inspired a key plot element in this movie and helped Nate prove to Michael and Damon that there was a social commentary in the film. It’s also the last social commentary in a Gamera movie for years, so enjoy it while it lasts. Before the broadcast, Nate tries to tell his intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, how he plans to be a small thorn in the Board’s side only to be interrupted by Raymund Martin, the head of the Monster Island Legal Action Team, who promptly tells Nate why he can’t do that. Raymund Martin was created and voiced by Damon Noyes. Prologue written by Nathan Marchand with Damon Noyes. 16 Jun 2022 | Episode 66: Damon Noyes vs. ‘The Giant Claw’ | 02:40:16
Hello, kaiju lovers! Today’s episode is AS BIG AS A BATTLESHIP! Damon Noyes visits the Island (after yet another harrowing experience) for “Ameri-kaiju” to discuss 1957’s The Giant Claw. This infamous movie stars the ugliest antimatter-powered space bird you’ve ever seen! “Crazy Bernice,” as she’s known on the Island, looks more like Beaky Buzzard than Rodan, despite her movie being similar to the latter’s. Nate and Damon spend a surprising amount of time on this wacky movie, poking fun at the Claw marionette, theorizing over the bird’s origins, discussing borderline creepy 1950s flirting, and the movie’s unofficial sequel novels! You might be wondering, “What could Marchand possibly research as a Toku Topic for The Giant Claw?” Antimatter. What else? After the broadcast, Nate and Damon break in to commentate on Crazy Bernice escaping from the Beta Site and attacking H.E.A.T.—but thankfully, Zilla is around! Check out the movies Damon was in! Maxie, directed by Jarrett Bryant, is on the streaming site Vimeo. One can get $1.00 off the price by using the code: LaneCounty. “Off the Road,” a 13-minute short from Hewlett Artistry, can be viewed on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/ZdJHBY2a4fg. The “La Carcagne Promo” was written by Damon Noyes. The epilogue, “Crazy Bernice,” was written by Nathan Marchand. Guest stars:

12 Nov 2021 | Episode 52 - Kaiju Kim vs. ‘Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris’ | 02:06:18
Hello, kaiju lovers! After nearly a year of surviving inane MST3K fodder and watching the first two entries of a fantastic trilogy, Nate reaches one of kaiju eiga’s zeniths with Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris. He’s joined by YouTuber and (ironically) Godzilla enthusiast Kaiju Kim to discuss this masterpiece. As Nate puts it, this is one of the rare trilogies where each entry gets better—in fact, everything gets cranked to 12 in this. They discuss the amazing story, incredible characters, impressive special effects, absolute badassery, and the many, many cultural elements that may go over western fans’ heads as crazy fantasy. Speaking of which, choosing a Toku Topic was difficult, but Nate landed on the Four Symbols and mana, because they play the big roles in this film and the rest of the trilogy. Check out Kim’s video on Gamera 3 here. Listen to Nathan Marchand and Travis Alexander’s spinoff podcast, The Henshin Men, on Redcircle. 15 Apr 2022 | Bonus Episode #11 – Godzilla: The Series | The Cameron Winter Trilogy | Ft. The Cel Cast | 01:34:46
Hello, kaiju lovers! Our new boss here on Monster Island mandated that our first Fifth Wednesday Bonus Episode of 2022 be about him. So, Nate invites Drew and Jacob from The Cel Cast to return to Godzilla: The Series. Specifically, they discuss what has been branded, “The Cameron Winter Trilogy.” Namely the three episodes centered around the nefarious tech tycoon (“The Winter of Our Discontent,” “An Early Frost,” and “Lizard Season”). Jake and Drew have strong opinions about these episodes—and Nate has strong opinions about Cameron Winter. In other news, Godzilla is a kaiju. Special thanks to J.P. Gant for editing this episode. Jimmy puts his foot down and refuses to let Nate join him on Uber-Moguera to recapture Bill the Jotnar. Disappointed, Nate wanders around a local Norwegian church, venting months and months’ worth of pent up frustrations. But even when Jimmy manages to subdue Bill in the distance, Nate can’t help but make things a little harder for his intrepid producer. 15 Apr 2025 | Episode 102: ‘Reptilicus’ vs. Damon Noyes (Part 2) | 02:24:04
PART 2: Hello, Kaiju Lovers! This episode was five years in the making for executive producer Damon Noyes—so he talked for five hours! He’s been clamoring for all his favorite podcasts to cover the infamous Danish kaiju movie, Reptilicus (1961/1962), which became something of an icon in spite of itself. But good things come to those who wait, because now Vinegar Syndrome has released a new 4K blu-ray that includes both the American and Danish versions—complete with the notorious “Tilicus” song! Yes, Reptilicus was a pseudo-musical in Denmark! Nate and Damon had so much to get into, including a Toku Topic on biological regeneration, that this now holds the record for longest MIFV episode. This stop on the Monster Island World Tour was so long, your hosts almost missed the rest of a convention for Reptilicus fans in Tivoli Gardens called Repti-Con! 19 Apr 2024 | Episode 90: ‘Reptilian’ vs. Elijah Thomas | The Monster Island World Tour | 02:47:41
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In what might be the most subversive and inspirational episode of MIFV yet, Elijah Thomas (Kaiju Conversation) joins Nate to discuss the infamous South Korean “kaiju” (notice the air quotes?) movie, Reptilian. This is, in fact, a “remake” of Yongary, Monster from the Deep, and it's often called “The Room of kaiju films.” But Elijah says it’s more than that. He even goes so far as to say that if it wasn’t for this movie, the world wouldn't have BTS or Squid Game. How? Listen to find out! Then stay for our Toku Topic, which is something Elijah has become an expert in: Korean kaiju cinema. Read Jimmy’s Notes on this episode on the MIFV website! 25 Nov 2021 | Episode 53: ‘Godzilla Raids Again’ | Feat. Michael ‘The Kaiju Groupie’ Hamilton | Godzilla Redux | 01:58:12
Hello, kaiju lovers! Nate gets back to his new subseries, “Godzilla Redux,” with the first of the many sequels to Godzilla (1954), Godzilla Raids Again. Strangely, it was the first G-film his guest, Kaiju Weekly co-host Michael “The Kaiju Groupie” Hamilton, ever saw. This somewhat forgotten 1955 cash-grab sequel, which was produced and released within six months, isn’t much to write home about—except it features the first appearance of fan-favorite kaiju Anguirus and the first ever kaiju fight in a Godzilla film. Nate and Michael discuss these as well as the hilarious dubbed version, “Gigantis, the Fire Monster,” and the JSDF (Japanese Self-Defense Forces)—all while dodging Jimmy’s badgering of his “former” nemesis. Before the broadcast, Nate and Jimmy get an unexpected visit from a “not-quite-dead-yet” man—Gary! After months of hiding since his near-fatal encounter with an escaped Gyaos, he’s decided to reveal himself to Nate and share his harrowing story of survival. After the broadcast, Raymund Martin arrives with legal papers for a class action lawsuit against the Board for Nate and Jimmy to sign and has a happy reunion with his long-thought-consumed paralegal. Listen to Nathan Marchand and Travis Alexander’s spinoff podcast, The Henshin Men, on Redcircle. 04 Oct 2022 | BONUS – Kaiju 101 and Other Tales from Ramen-Con 2022 | 01:58:21
Hello, kaiju lovers! Over the weekend, Nathan made a day trip up South Bend, Indiana, to attend Ramen-Con—which is about anime, not cooking…most of the time. The theme this year was kaiju, so he had to go. He gave a panel presentation called “Kaiju 101,” which was a crash course in the basics of giant monsters. That’s what most of the audio is in this bonus recording is from. Before that, Nate talks about the rest of his experiences at the con—including representing Moby Dick against Rhinoblaster in Kaiju Court! 01 Feb 2024 | 5th Wednesday Bonus Episode #15: ‘The Abominable Snowman’ (1957) | Ft. Matt Walsh | Patreon | 02:05:57
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! You know him and you probably hate him—our guest today is none other than Matt Walsh! Okay, it’s not that Matt Walsh. This one shaves and isn’t a millennial curmudgeon. Anyway, because this Matt Walsh is a madman, he jumped on the joke tier on Patreon, “Jimmy’s Intern,” to discuss 1957’s The Abominable Snowman, making this MIFV’s first Hammer film…and its third yeti film. (Nate only had a mild case of PTSD). Nate was pleasantly surprised to see that this film, which stars Grand Moff Tarkin himself, Peter Cushing, was far more philosophical and thoughtful than he expected. You’re in for a spirited bonus episode that fits right in with the Monster Island World Tour…even if Jimmy gets the day off. 04 Apr 2024 | Bonus Episode #16: ‘Space Monster Wangmagwi’ | Ft. Daniel DiManna | 02:20:13
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In yet another impromptu “bonus” episode, Nate is joined by Daniel DiManna (Godzilla Novelization Project) to discuss a film that was finally unleashed upon the world by SRS Cinema: Space Monster Wangmagwi. As you can see, this one actually fits the season theme of The Monster Island World Tour. As mentioned in the Yongary episode, this was also released in the “Year of the Kaiju,” 1967, beating Yongary by a few months. But like many South Korean kaiju films, the story around this one exceeds its artistic merits. In its case, it was a “holy grail” of a lost film for kaiju fans; a thing of legend that few ever saw. But thanks to the dogged efforts of Ron Bonk, it’s now readily available. Just prepare yourself for a “rantmaster” about Squirrel (not “Spider”), King of the Kennys! Read “Jimmy’s Notes” on this episode: https://monsterislandfilmvault.com/index.php/2024/04/04/jimmys-notes-on-bonus-episode-16-space-monster-wangmagwi-ft-daniel-dimanna/. 17 Sep 2024 | Episode 97: ‘Godzilla vs. Gigan’ | Ft. Daniel DiManna | Godzilla Redux (complete) | 04:04:47
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In the longest MIFV episode ever (of all time), Nate is joined by Daniel DiManna of the Godzilla Novelization Project (no surprise why it’s long) to discuss the most underestimated of G-films: Godzilla vs. Gigan (aka Godzilla on Monster Island). They discuss every possible aspect of this film, from its under-funded production to its quirky yet iconic dub and everything in between—and we do mean everything. But the most surprising part of this epic episode is Nate and Danny’s discussion of the historical context in which it was made—a time of market penetration by foreign corporations and the explosion of the popularity of theme parks—the fascinating unmade drafts of its script written by both Shinichi Sekizawa and Takeshi Kimura, and the brilliant meta commentary it makes on Godzilla as a pop culture icon. “There’s something funny going on” in today’s episode of MIFV! Here’s the Sekizawa and Kimura panel Danny and I hosted at G-Fest 2019: https://youtu.be/D3fROnC-Sso?si=SJjlQ5kie_XYuDRA. Jimmy’s Notes on this episode COMING SOON! 20 Sep 2023 | Special Report #5 – ‘Gamera: -Rebirth-’ | MIFV x The Cel Cast | 02:45:40
Yeah, I’m thinking Gamera is back! And since his return is in anime form, of course Nate invited Drew and Jacob from The Cel Cast to join the discussion. Gamera: -Rebirth- is a six-episode anime that just dropped on Netflix, and it’s infinitely better than the fake anime Nate and the Cel Cast boys covered a few months ago. Writer-director Hiroyuki Seshita gets his redemption story in this, proving it really was studio interference that held him back with the Godzilla Anime Trilogy. More importantly, this is definitely in the Gamera tradition, where the Guardian of the Universe has to settle for a second-string studio with a lower budget, so he to do his best with it. Does it rise to the heights of the Heisei trilogy or the lows of the Showa series? Listen and find out! Watch the original livestream video on MIFV’s YouTube channel! Episode 59 on Mothra (1961) isn’t quite finished, so to make up for its delay, I’m sharing this abridged version of a Patreon-exclusive livestream. I was joined by Michael Hamilton and Daniel DiManna to celebrate the birthday of the late great Sean Connery by discussing the 1996 fantasy film Dragonheart that starred Connery as Draco and Dennis Quaid as the knight who hunts and befriends him. 22 Nov 2023 | Episode 80: The Asylum’s “Monster Island” (Ft. Raymund Martin) | 02:31:58
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In the (overdue) season 3 finale, Nate is forced to deal with Cameron Winter's “Christmas gift”: the Asylum's infamous Monster Island. It’s supposedly a “mockbuster” of 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but even by the Asylum’s standards, that’s a stretch. To unravel the legal loopholes and shenanigans that went into making this...movie, Nate brings on the Island’s star lawyer, Raymund Martin, and the man’s paralegal, Gary Steward. Not only do they riff this half-competent (and therefore, boring) “kaiyu” flick into the ground, they give you a crash course in the history of the Asylum and mockbusters. Nate’s contractual obligations are now complete! Beforehand, Nate delivers his final report as the nonexistent “media master” to Mr. Gold, who reveals a few tantalizing details about what's been happening on the Island lately. Guest Cast

26 Jan 2024 | Episode 83 Epilogue: "Kung Fools" | 00:13:30
Nate decides to do some film curation in Hong Kong--with Hannibal Chau. Jimmy escorts him to the Bone Slums to meet the black market dealer and discovers a reel containing the 1999 cut of Reptilian. So, he does what any kaiju film curator would do: he steals it. But Chau won't have any of that! Check out Nathan’s spinoff podcasts, The Henshin Men and The Power Trip. 29 Dec 2021 | Bonus Episode #10 – Meet the New Boss: An Interview with Cameron Winter | 00:10:56
Hello, kaiju lovers! In an MIFV exclusive, Nate interviews Solstice Technologies CEO (and the envy of Elon Musk), Cameron Winter, who recently purchased the majority shares of Monster Island. Winter discusses several changes that he will make to the day-to-day operations on the Island and how he plans to revitalize the struggling scientific facility and resort in light of the ousting of the Board. It’s the biggest interview Nate has ever scored! This episode was written by Nathan Marchand with Michael Hamilton and Jack “GMan” Hudgens. Guest stars:

08 Oct 2022 | Episode 70: The Drifters vs. ‘Pacific Rim’ | 02:25:56
Hello, kaiju lovers! Nate has been waiting for this Ameri-kaiju episode for a long time—he gets to discuss one of his favorite films: Pacific Rim! He’s joined by the three co-hosts of The Drift Space podcast—returning guests Jack “GMan” Hudgens and J.R. Viller, plus Jack’s sister, Rebecca—to gush about how much they love it. Guillermo del Toro’s masterful tribute to both tokusatsu and anime is a movie that is unabashedly itself with its archetypal but strong characters, incredible worldbuilding, and mind-blowing special effects. But beneath the beyond-cool chassis beats the heart of a grossly underestimated story of surprising depth. If you don’t already love Pacific Rim, Nate and the Drifters will change your mind! Beforehand, Nate discovers data files for an abandoned ad campaign for an unknown kaiju named “Chimera.” After the broadcast, as you undoubtedly heard, a mysterious kaiju attacked the Island but was killed by the Drifters in their Jaeger, Bouncing Betty. Nate’s live broadcast of that battle is included here. The prologue and epilogue, “Chimera,” was written by Nathan Marchand. Additional music:

17 Feb 2024 | Episode 84: John LeMay vs. 'Mighty Peking Man' | 02:00:03
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! The most cited man on MIFV, John LeMay, returns for his all-but-mandatory-at-least-once-a-season appearance to discuss the second Shaw Bros. film we’ve covered this season: Mighty Peking Man. This infamous cult classic was a favorite of director Quinton Tarantino, and it's easy to see why: it's sleazy yet weirdly artsy. It feels like an exploitation film at points—especially with the gorgeous Evalyn Kraft running around in nothing but a goatskin bikini—but the special effects are remarkably well-executed thanks to Keizo Murase. Since it’s John's favorite “Kongsploitation” movie, that is the first of two Toku Topics this episode, with the other being the Peking Man fossil, which partly inspired this flick. Check out this episode's epilogue, "Davida and Goliathon"! For full show notes, including a bibliography of sources, check out this episode's post on the MIFV website: https://monsterislandfilmvault.com/index.php/2024/02/17/episode-84-john-lemay-vs-mighty-peking-man/. 14 Feb 2022 | Episode 58: The Tourists vs. ‘Mighty Joe Young’ (1949) | 02:14:55
Hello, kaiju lovers! “Ameri-kaiju” continues with three of the original MIFV Tourists—Nick Hayden, Joe Metter, and Joy Metter—returning to the Island to the “spiritual sequel” to King Kong (1933): Mighty Joe Young (1949). This classic features the special effects masters of the generations: Willis O’Brien and Ray Harryhausen. As usual, Nate did way too much research, but its almost overshadowed by the BURNING OPRHANS(!). Nate’s guests were blindsided by this film’s climax; so much so, they start the discussion with that and move backwards through the movie, Memento-style. The Toku Topic is gorillas in captivity since Mighty Joe himself was a captive gorilla. Before the broadcast, Nate speaks with Jessica about her new job as director of tourism on his way to meet with the Island’s new PR director, Darius R. Gold, a big game hunter from Texas. Amidst a metric ton of bravado, Mr. Gold tells Nate to contact Teri Young, the current caretaker for Mighty Joe Young. After the broadcast, Nate finally gets a reply from her—and a suspicious revelation about Cameron Winter. This episode’s prologue, “Gold and Gorillas,” was written by Nathan Marchand with Michael Hamilton and Daniel DiManna. Guest stars:

22 Mar 2024 | Episode 87: ‘Yongary, Monster from the Deep’ vs. Neil Riebe | 02:25:41
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! The South Korea leg of the Monster Island World Tour begins with arguably the first true Korean kaiju film: Yongary, Monster from the Deep. Author Neil Riebe, who might very well be this film's biggest fan, pays yet another visit to MIFV's mobile studio in Uber-Moguera to enlighten us with his copious research on the movie. Released in the “Year of the Kaiju,” 1967, it borrows some from Showa Godzilla films but way more from Showa Gamera—complete with a Korean Kenny! Ironically, only the dubbed version of the movie survives. It was once the most expensive film ever made in South Korea (until that record was broken by its remake) and is considered one of the country's most important films, but does it have the artistic merit to warrant such acclaim, or is it truly just MST3K fodder? Since the film had Japanese technicians from Toei and X Productions working on it, our Toku Topic is Japan-Korea relations. Read Jimmy’s Notes on this episode on the MIFV website: https://monsterislandfilmvault.com/index.php/2024/03/22/jimmys-notes-on-episode-87-yongary-monster-from-the-deep-vs-neil-riebe/. 09 Dec 2021 | Episode 54: Bex vs. ‘Gamera the Brave’ | 02:24:49
Hello, kaiju lovers! With this episode, we reach the end of the “Year of Gamera.” Depending on who you talk to (like Nate), it’s a bittersweet occasion because, on one hand, many bad movies were endured, but on the other hand, today’s subject is 2006’s Gamera the Brave. Becky “Bex” Smith from the Redeemed Otaku podcast and YouTube channel joins Nate to discuss what is, as of now, the last Gamera film. It is sadly overshadowed by everything that came before it. It’s a shame because this is a Showa Gamera movie—except good! Think of it as a Gamera film made by Pixar. So, it’s emotionally honest and will make you cry. Even Nate had to summon all of his manly discipline to keep control. Bex, on the other hand, did not. The Toku Topic, since much of the movie takes place at a restaurant, is Japanese ramen culture. Before the broadcast, Nate was…graced with the return of his pseudo-sister, Jessica. Unfortunately, he didn’t appreciate her bone-crunching glomp and told her off. That got him a lecture from Jessica’s bestie, Bex. Afterward, Nate is all but forced to indulge Jessica and let her sing a karaoke of a popular anime theme song. You can probably guess which one. Check out the Redeemed Otaku podcast and YouTube channel. This episode’s prologue and epilogue, “Jessica Returns,” was written by Nathan Marchand with Becky Smith. Guest stars:

It’s not often Nate has actors from kaiju films on the show, let alone two of his buddies! Yes, believe it or not, his friends Daniel DiManna (Godzilla Novelization Project) and Elijah Thomas (Kaiju Conversation) both “starred” and “co-directed” the independent schlock-fest ZillaFoot from SRS Cinema. In this episode, which is more of an interview than a review/discussion, Daniel and Elijah talk about how they got involved with this movie and what they did in it. They also try to explain its convoluted history and divulge some juicy insider info! It’s the definitive podcast episode on ZillaFoot! (Worst bragging rights ever…?) 13 Jan 2022 | Episode 56: The Omni Viewer vs. ‘The Lost World’ (1925) | 02:24:53
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! And welcome to season three of The Monster Island Film Vault! We begin 2022 with a brand new series focusing on giant monster films from the U.S.A., “Ameri-kaiju.” To launch this special occasion, Nate is joined by returning guest/YouTuber/author Ryan “The Omni Viewer” Collins (and his kaiju-muppet-thing sidekick, Snazzy, who butts heads with Nate’s sidekick, the intrepid producer Jimmy From NASA) to discuss the prototypical kaiju film, The Lost World (1925). You’re about to hear one of the most MIFV of MIFV episodes: literary analysis, film appreciation, witty banter, hilarious puns, and wild history. What more could you want? Before the broadcast, Nate meets Dr. Nick Tatopoulos, the leader of H.E.A.T., in the KIJU breakroom (and pronounces the man’s name correctly) while fighting with the coffeemaker. Nick talks about his hostile history with the Island’s new boss, Cameron Winter—and then the crooked tycoon calls them on Nate’s phone! The Omni Viewer’s YouTube channel. 28 Sep 2024 | Episode 98: ‘Trollhunter’ (2010) vs. Eric Anderson | 02:32:01
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! The Monster Island World Tour moves into Europe with a stop in Oslo, Norway, to discuss the 2010 found footage kaiju film, Trollhunter (not to be confused with Netflix’s Troll from 2022—we already covered that). Nate is joined by his college chum, the founder of Nerd Chapel, Eric Anderson, to dive into a movie that says Christians need not apply to be Norway’s hunter of trolls (and we don’t mean the internet variety). That’s just one of the many aspects of this unique film that these two Christian nerds get into. Prepare yourself for a heaping dose of theology and folklore! For the Toku Topic, Nate delves into the “monster masts” controversy surrounding the construction of electrical lines in rural Norway, which helped inspire the film. 20 Mar 2024 | MIFV MAX #28: ‘The Mighty Kong’ | Ft. Brendan Morley (Autistic Lizard Productions) (abridged) | 01:25:17
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! According to MIFV’s analytics, King Kong (and not Godzilla) is good for business right now, so in this excerpt from our Patreon-exclusive livestream, we’re filling in one of the “gaps” from season 1’s The Kong Quest (ba-dum-tsh!) Brendan Morley joins Nathan to discuss the almost-forgotten animated musical (you read that right), The Mighty Kong (1998). It’s not only the first Kong musical, it’s arguably the best—which isn’t saying much. Still, it has an all-star talent line-up with Jodi Benson (The Little Mermaid) as Ann Darrow, Dudley Moore as “C.B.” Denham, and music by the Sherman Brothers. It can be argued this is the closest Disney has gotten to touching King Kong. Is it good? Depends on which host you ask. Join MIFV MAX on Patreon to see the uncut livestream version of this episode! 12 Aug 2024 | Episode 96: ‘The Lake’ (2022) vs. Jacob Lyngle | 02:42:24
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! With Korea finally behind them—much to Nate’s relief—he and Jimmy migrate to Thailand. There they are joined by the founder and editor of Kaiju United, your premiere kaiju website, to discuss the ambitious “thaiju” (ba-dum-tsh!) film, The Lake (2022). Jacob had the privilege of interviewing its director, Lee Thongkham, for KU, which is frequently referenced in this episode since there is shockingly little info online for this film. Not even the usual kaiju wiki pages have anything! Regardless, it’s an ambitious little movie, and compared to some of Thailand’s other giant monster fare, it’s practically a masterpiece. (Looking at you, Garuda!) Thongkham said his film was inspired by local legends of a serpent god, which inspired Nate to research the naga as this episode’s Toku Topic. 23 Dec 2021 | Episode 55 - ‘Yeti: Giant of the 20th Century’ (feat. Travis Alexander and Daniel DiManna) | 01:52:39
Welcome to MIFV’s season finale, kaiju lovers—it wasn’t what it was supposed to be! No, after the Board’s envoy, William H. George III, stunguns the ever-intrepid Jimmy From NASA, he takes over as producer and forces Nate, Travis Alexander (co-host of Kaiju Weekly and Henshin Men), and Daniel DiManna (author/creator of the Godzilla Novelization Project) to watch the infamous 1977 Canadian-but-actually-Italian kaiju movie, Yeti: Giant of the 20th Century. Though Nate survived watching it during Kaiju Quarantine, he’s still unprepared for inflatable abominable snowman nipples and deadly “toe-fu.” The riffs and jokes abound amidst actual research as WHG3 gets drunker—and more Scottish?!—as the episode progresses. God(zilla) help Nate! This episode’s prologue, “The Board’s Revenge,” was written by Nathan Marchand with Travis Alexander, Michael Hamilton, and Daniel DiManna. Guest stars:

16 Sep 2024 | Episode 97: ‘Godzilla vs. Gigan’ | Ft. Daniel DiManna | Godzilla Redux (Part 1) | 01:48:37
Continued in Part 2. Here’s the Sekizawa and Kimura panel Danny and I hosted at G-Fest 2019: https://youtu.be/D3fROnC-Sso?si=SJjlQ5kie_XYuDRA. Jimmy’s Notes on this episode COMING SOON! 28 Apr 2021 | Episode 39: The Drifters vs. 'Gamera vs. Viras' (feat. Jack 'GMan' Hudgens and J.R. Villers) | 01:37:49
Hello, kaiju lovers! In the first of a double-whammy of “Year of Gamera” episodes that continue to chip away at Nate’s sanity, today’s movie is 1968’s Gamera vs. Viras. Nate is joined by returning guest (and Jimmy From NASA nemesis) Jack “GMan” Hudgens and Jack’s friend J.R. Villers from The Drift Space podcast to discuss this outlandish but imaginative kaiju flick. It’s near and dear (haha!) to Jimmy’s heart because, believe it or not, it dramatizes an exciting chapter of his childhood. Yes, MIFV’s intrepid producer is one of the precocious “Kennys”! In order to survive, Nate makes many Star Trek references/comparisons and several puns. The discussion also includes talk about hentai (don’t ask) and how the Rocky films stole the Gamera series’ formula—and it includes Sly Stallone impersonations. The Toku Topic is the Scout Association of Japan since the Gamera kids in this—again, including Jimmy—are both Boy Scouts. Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org. The Drift Space on Podchaser. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! There was no way Nate could let Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One—only the most successful live action Japanese film ever released in America—go unanalyzed! So, for this special coda to MIFV season three, he’s joined by everyone’s favorite a-hole/”gatekeeper,” Jack “GMan” Hudgens, to discuss what might be worthy of the “Mount Rushmore of Kaiju Films.” They unpack everything from its rich themes, incredible characters, marvelous special effects, and more! Also, because Godzilla is good for business and worthy of “the Full Marchand,” you get a Toku Topic: kamikaze pilots. Check out The Drift Space and Deferential Wrath of a Rusting Markalite Cannon. 20 Jan 2024 | Special Report #6, Part 1 - ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ (Eps. 1-6) | 02:56:36
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In the part one of a two-part compilation of weekly podcasts originally made for MIFV MAX members on Patreon, Nate breaks down and analyzes the first six episodes of AppleTV+’s MonsterVerse series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. It starts off strong, but like many Americans, it gets squishy in the middle. The flashback storyline is definitely better than the “present day” (2015) story arc, but both Wyatt and Kurt Russell are impressive playing the same character in two time periods. Continued in part 2: https://monsterislandfilmvault.com/?p=2097. Check out Nathan’s spinoff podcasts, The Henshin Men and The Power Trip. 01 Mar 2023 | Episode 75: ‘Ebirah, Horror of the Deep’ | Ft. Brendan Morley and the Metters | Godzilla Redux | 02:12:14
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! The final “Godzilla Redux” episode of season three features three guests! Longtime staples Joe and Joy Metter and first-timer Brendan Morley join Nate to discuss Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (aka Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster). It’s Brendan’s favorite Godzilla film, so it was only natural he’d be here. Nate enticed Joe and Joy to return by having them watch the “banned” Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode that riffed the film. That means the entire gamut is run because Nate watched it subtitled while Brendan watched the international dub. The Metters, as the resident kaiju newbies, notice and appreciate some things hardcore fans take for granted—including what might be an Easter egg no one else has ever seen! It’s an MIFV exclusive, people! Listen to learn what it is! Before the broadcast, Nate meets a new girl who brings him a press release that says Jimmy is in jail, requiring Jet Jaguar to fill in for him on the show. Then Jessica shows up to berate Nate about taking her job. Afterward, Jessica hears from Mimo that Mothra DNA is being stolen by a Bug Lady, so she intercedes as Crystal Lady. But this new foe proves too strong—until she’s helped by Whambat! Check out Brendan’s YouTube channel: youtube.com/@AutisticLizardProductions. The prologue and epilogue, “Severing Family Ties! Jessica Fights Nate and Daggermoth,” was written by Nathan Marchand. This episode was edited by Kim Lacanilao of Nuclear Lizard Media (https://www.nuclearlizardmedia.com/) and Nathan Marchand. 04 Apr 2025 | Episode 101: ‘Power Rangers Time Force – Clash for Control’ | Ft. Andrew Wynja and Michael Hamilton | Patreon | 02:20:17
Hello, Kaiju Lovers…and welcome, Listeners with Attitude! Nate takes advantage of his short time back on the Island to produce a Patreon-sponsored episode requested by first-time MIFV MAX member Andrew Wynja “The Ninja,” who picked the Power Rangers: Time Force VHS “Clash for Control.” So, naturally, Nate couldn’t do this without his former Power Trip co-host Michael Hamilton. These episodes feature the first appearance of Wynja’s favorite Zord, the amazing mecha-dinosaur Quantasaurus Rex (or Q-Rex), and Nate’s Power Ranger “man crush,” Eric Myers, in an epic time travel adventure. But the reason Wynja chose this VHS edition of the episodes is because this was before they were censored in light of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Tune to hear about this and more! “Time for…Time Force!” Featuring Andrew Wynja as Frax. Jimmy’s Notes on this episode COMING SOON! 14 Mar 2024 | Episode 86: ‘The Whale God’ vs. Daniel DiManna vs. Elijah Thomas | 02:49:14
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In yet another impromptu episode (because reasons), Nate is joined by Daniel DiManna (Godzilla Novelization Project) and Elijah Thomas (Kaiju Conversation) to discuss the semi-obscure Daiei proto-kaiju film, The Whale God. Released in 1962, it was largely unseen outside of Japan until it was released by SRS Cinema this past January. The boys unpack the tremendous talent behind and in front of the camera--including Takashi Shimura, Kojiro Hongo, and Akira Ifukube, among others--its connections to Herman Melville's Moby Dick, and how it uses elements of J-horror to create a potent period drama. The Toku Topic, thanks to Danny's in-depth research, is Japanese whaling. Then stay tuned after the credits to hear Elijah try to touch the Whale God! Buy The Whale God on blu-ray and VHS from SRS Cinema! (https://srscinemastore.com/) Post-credit scene suggested by Elijah Thomas. 30 Jun 2022 | Bonus Episode 12: ‘Beware! The Blob’ | Ft. Travis Alexander | 01:18:14
Hello, kaiju lovers! In this bonus “Ameri-kaiju” episode, Travis Alexander of Kaiju Weekly and Henshin Men finally gets to see the goo—and he’s not happy! That’s mostly because he’s an animal lover and the Blob eats a kitten in the almost-forgotten and incredibly weird 1972 sequel, Beware! The Blob (aka Son of Blob). It’s the most bipolar movie Nate has ever seen for the show, and Travis, a lover of movies both weird and bad, found it borderline incomprehensible. Half of it is disjointed improvisational comedy, and the other half is a scary but inferior rehashing of the original 1958 classic. Strap for a discussion of more 30-year-old “teens,” a “hair sculptor,” and a Naked Turk! Additional music:

On September 25, 2019, Nathan re-entered the world of kaiju podcasting with a new show he wasn’t sure would work. Four years of ups and downs later, this unique blend of film analysis and audio drama is still going strong. 09 Jun 2022 | Episode 64: Kaiju Weekly vs. ‘20 Million Miles to Earth’ | 02:02:06
Hello, kaiju lovers! MIFV’s season three theme, Ameri-kaiju, wouldn’t be complete without some Ray Harryhausen, so Nate invited both of his “co-hosts in kamen” (ba-dum-tsh!) to discuss 20 Million Miles to Earth. (Yes, Jimmy reminds Nate that he got his chronology wrong, because this film was released in 1957 and The Blob was 1958. Oops!). Harryhausen super-fans Travis Alexander and Michael Hamilton, co-hosts of the Kaiju Weekly podcast, join Nate in a chat that veers perilously close to derailing at multiple points. Jet lag will do that to you, especially when flying to the Island in the Rad Bug. Regardless, 20 Million Miles was Harryhausen’s first truly iconic film, paving the way for his fantasy epics that followed. The intrepid Jimmy From NASA keeps trying to tell his story about seeing a herd of Ymir on their native Venus, but nobody cares. The Toku Topic is the Soviet side of the Space Race since this film begins with a rocket ship crash and was released several months before the launch of Sputnik I. Be prepared for many (bad) Russian accents! To compete with this broadcast, Cameron Winter did a livestream where he sent one of his Cyber-Flies to track down the Ymir so he could be put on display for the film’s anniversary and Harryhausen’s birthday in June. Winter rambles about seemingly random things while doing so. Special thanks to J.P. Gant for helping to edit this episode! Follow him on Twitter: @Homebrewed_SD (https://tinyurl.com/2jpc36r5). 17 Nov 2022 | Episode 72: Record All Monsters vs. ‘Colossal’ | 02:37:00
Hello, kaiju lovers! Today on “Ameri-kaiju,” we get artsy with the indie film Colossal, starring Anne Hathaway. Robert and Courtney from the Record All Monsters podcast stop by to have a thoughtful discussion on this unique kaiju film where the monsters are psychic projections of the main characters. While it’s a comedy, it touches on some heavy subjects, like alcoholism and narcissism. All three hosts share personal stories connected to those subjects. While some commentators have said that the film is about domestic abuse, Nate disagrees. So instead, today’s Toku Topic is on the psychology of inner demons because every character in Colossal is wrestling with one. Beforehand, Cameron Winter pays Nate a visit in Nate’s prestigious media master office. Winter asks Nate if he knows anything about Jessica helping to free the Ymir—and to maintain his cover, Nate reluctantly says she conspired to do so. Afterward, Nate and Jet Jaguar go to the Heat Seeker and meet H.E.A.T.’s techie, Randy, who sends the robot N.I.G.E.L. to spy on Winter’s operations on the Beta Site. There they make a surprise discovery that’s more than they bargained for, and now Jet must save them. The prologue and epilogue, “Trespassing,” was written by Nathan Marchand. Guest cast:

27 Oct 2021 | MIFV MAX #5: ”Ask Me Anything” 2nd Anniversary Special | 01:41:51
No, this isn’t episode 51. In light of falling behind on episode 50, catching up with my new job, and life in general, I’ve had to delay episode 51. I should hopefully have it done in a week or less. But in the meantime, as I get the podcast back on schedule, please enjoy this audio version of MIFV MAX #5, which was a livestream I did on the podcast’s YouTube channel on it’s actual second anniversary. You can watch the video version here. From YouTube: “To celebrate the podcast's actual second anniversary (which was September 25, 2019), I'll be holding an "Ask Me Anything" session. Got questions about the podcast? Ask away in the chat (or beforehand)!” We’d like to give a shout-out to our MIFV MAX patrons Travis Alexander and Michael Hamilton (co-hosts of Kaiju Weekly); Danny DiManna (author/creator of the Godzilla Novelization Project); Eli Harris (elizilla13); Chris Cooke (host of One Cross Radio); Bex from Redeemed Otaku; Damon Noyes, The Cel Cast, TofuFury, and Elijah Thomas! Thanks for your support! You, too, can join MIFV MAX on Patreon to get this and other perks starting at only $3 a month! Buy official MIFV merch on TeePublic! 10 Feb 2023 | Episode 74: Chris Cooke vs. ‘Power Rangers’ (2017) | 02:56:58
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! “Ameri-kaiju” continues with a bit of an unusual entry; one that, serendipitously, Nate also covered around the same time on his other podcast, The Power Trip: the controversial Power Rangers (2017). While Nate has grown to appreciate this film quite a bit, he intentionally brought on Chris Cooke (co-host of One Cross Radio, Radio Arcade, and Powerbombs and Piledrivers) to discuss it because he does not. However, these two find more common ground than you’d think. That was surprisingly true in today’s Toku Topic, which is a discussion of representation in media. This serves as a great companion to the Power Trip episode. Before today’s broadcast, Nate entered his office to find sitting in his chair none other than Mr. Gold. After a thinly veiled threat of “termination,” Nate divulges a secret about Jimmy to him. Afterward, the infamous “Not-Goldar” attacks Monster Island out of nowhere—but help arrives in the form of a newly powered-up Karone! But even Nate, Chris, and Jimmy get in on the monster-fighting action thanks to Mechani-Kong Mk. 2. The prologue and epilogue, “With Friends Like You,” was written by Nathan Marchand with Michael Hamilton. Guest Cast

23 Jun 2022 | Episode 67: ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ (1986) | Ft. Damon Noyes | 02:20:58
Hello, kaiju lovers! Thanks to Damon Noyes’s generous MIFV MAX pledge on Patreon, MIFV is covering its first musical: Little Shop of Horrors (1986)! Nate wanted to cover this as part of Amer-kaiju, but to his disappointment, it didn’t make the cut. That’s when Damon, who’s performed in not one but two stage productions of this, swooped in and got it on the roster. It has a puppet, after all. This story has a complicated history: from several short stories to a low-budget Roger Corman movie in 1960 to a 1982 off-off-Broadway musical to this film, Nate and Damon dive into all of it. You’ll hear discussion of Faustian bargains, debates over its two endings, some singing, and even a candid moment where Damon gets emotional about a song in the film. Before the broadcast, Nate was checking his e-mail in the KIJU breakroom when Mr. Gold arrives and says Cameron Winter wants to promote him to “media master.” Nate is reluctant, but he wonders if he can use this to discover what the new boss is hiding. Also, Dr. Douif calls as the Island’s kaiju horticulturalist to offer his thoughts on Audrey II. The prologue, “The Offer,” was written by Nathan Marchand. Guest stars:
