Ep. 1: 5 Tips for Gaining Teacher Buy-In
00:19:45
📣Takeaways:
Always find SOMETHING positive to point out and help them build on that.
Provide ONE small, manageable thing to try to implement before your next check in.
Provide ways for them to see objectively how the progress is going and make decisions on those data.
Provide THEM (teachers) positive reinforcement for their efforts!
What can YOU do to take the load off of THEM?
Bonus: Ask for their opinion on things, even if you know what the answer is or the best course of action. Make sure they feel they are being heard and listened to. Consider their insights and build upon common goals and expectations.
💎 Today’s GEM: Your #1 goal of a first observation or request for support in-class is to be ASKED BACK. Remember that you can do nothing for even the most needy class or teacher unless they want your help, so find something positive to focus on or give them one simple thing you know will make a difference, and build a level of support and trust from day one!
⏰ We have something to save you TIME this week! ⏰

Ep. 3: 6 Ways to Approach Challenging Behaviors and Trauma-Informed Care
00:30:52
📣Takeaways:
Build a relationship of trust. Bond, be present, show interest, make YOURSELF a reinforcer, create a safe place for your student.
Provide predictability and consistency. Not only help you and your staff but gives your students a sense of safety and security if they know what to expect and when.
Give choices. Such an easy but powerful strategy! Remember the “frame.” The non-negotiables are the frame of the picture, but everything on the inside can be fluid. Brushing your teeth is non-negotiable, but you can do it in the bathroom, sitting on the toilet, on your bed, with this toothbrush or that. You get the idea.
Pick your battles. Does it matter if they want to walk in the hallway sideways? Or that they want to do their math worksheet sitting on the floor? Maybe, but maybe it doesn’t. Again, giving back control may make a huge difference!
Plan ahead. You know your student and can often predict what the triggers are going to be. If you plan ahead and prepare, when challenging behaviors occur, you know what to do. It’s also good for the student!
Start fresh. Once an incident is over, let it be over. Start fresh. Other than good-practice debriefing, let bygones be bygones. Each day, each hour, even, let it be a fresh start.
💎Today’s GEM: If you wanted to just pick ONE thing to try this week, take time out to build a relationship with a kiddo who’s struggling. Maybe you invite them to come play a game. Maybe you bring a favorite treat just for them. Maybe you just tell them how much you appreciate how hard they’re working.

Ep. 5: DTT vs. NET: The Skill Building Showdown
00:32:57
What is DTT? DTT (Discrete Trial Training): Structured learning with repetitive trials, clear prompts, and lots of data tracking. Think table time, 1:1, repetitive practice, materials, clipboard, data. 📋
What is NET? NET (Natural Environment Teaching): Skill-building within everyday routines, focused on child-led interests and real-world practice. Think free time, on the floor or wherever you are, embedding your goals in whatever you’re doing. 🧸
👌DTT Pros:
Structured & clear presentation
Easier data collection
Good for initial skill acquisition
Controlled environment
🤷♀️DTT Cons:
More difficult to generalize
Can feel unnatural
Can create prompt dependence
Less emphasis on motivation
DTT, generally really good for early skill acquisition, good for students who have a slower learning trajectory, and for students who need low distractions and repetitions to gain traction.
👌NET Pros:
Better generalization
Learner motivation
More “real” and functional
More social opportunities
🤷♀️NET Cons:
Less controlled
Taking data is difficult
May be slower progress
Potential for inconsistencies
NET, good to generalize learned skills, good for students who are more apt to learn from their environment, who have some play-based skills you can capitalize on.
It’s all about BALANCE!
💎Today’s GEM: Your challenge this week. Take one skill and one student this week and take some time with that goal in a DT setting and in an NET setting and see how they work together for you!

Ep. 6: Providing Data Support in the General Education Setting
00:20:58
📝Takeaways :
Students often have high emotional and behavioral needs but are academically appropriate for general education classroom settings.
These learners may not have inclusion teachers or paraprofessionals to help implement behavior data or strategies.
This requires us to use our ‘outside the box’ thinking in terms of data collection and interventions.
Bonus: Check out the download file for user-friendly printable and digital data sheets!
💎Today’s GEM: Try using one of these data sheets to get objective behavior data as a starting point for behavior consult. Can also increase student motivation toward behavioral goals! 🎉

Ep. 7: Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff with Alicia Like
00:19:29
Have you heard the term “pick your battles?” It’s not just a quip! Used thoughtfully and systematically, it can be an amazing tool in your behavioral toolbelt! It helps reduce power struggles, preserves energy (yours and theirs), prioritizes safety and core values, and creates opportunities for positive choices.
Join us as we discuss this and other ways to alleviate the power struggles with my friend and colleague Alicia Like, M.Ed., BCBA.
📝Takeaways :
1. 🎯Keep in mind the GOAL of the task. If you are working on writing, is the goal the penmanship or is the goal the concept, the organization? If it’s the concept, then does it matter if they use a crayon instead of a pencil? If the goal is to sit at circle time for 5 minutes, does it matter if he sits on a chair or on the floor? Be flexible on what you are requiring and what you are able to “let it go” (in the words of Elsa).
2. 🖼️For the most oppositional behaviors, keep in mind the FRAME concept. Know your non-negotiables beforehand, those things that just have to be. Then allow for lots of fluidity in the middle. We have to go to the bus, but we can walk, we can dance, we can ride in the wagon, we can silly sing on the way. We obviously can’t punch our friends, but we can punch this bag, we can kick this ball, we can scream into this pillow. Be clear about those non-negotiables beforehand, but whenever possible, let there be flexibility “in the middle.” Let the student have as much choice and say for the rest of it.
3. 🚫Avoid saying NO as much as you can! It is possible! Try these: “As soon as…” -- when something else needs to be done first. “As soon as we get this work done, we can totally get those cars out.” “No, but…” -- when something needs to be done instead. “No, but we can use this marker instead of that one.” ”Not yet…” -- when something needs to be done later. “Not yet, but we can do it after lunch. Let’s put it on your calendar so we will remember!” Obviously, some NOs are unavoidable, but when it’s possible, give it a try! A more positive response may be just the magic you need to turn a situation around!
💎 Today’s GEM: This week, see how often you can turn a “no” into a “no, but,” “as soon as,” or a “not yet.”

Ep. 8: Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month
00:13:43
Have you heard the term “pick your battles?” It’s not just a quip! Used thoughtfully and systematically, it can be an amazing tool in your behavioral toolbelt! It helps reduce power struggles, preserves energy (yours and theirs), prioritizes safety and core values, and creates opportunities for positive choices.
Join us as we discuss this and other ways to alleviate the power struggles with my friend and colleague Alicia Like, M.Ed., BCBA.
📝Takeaways :
🧩 April is Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month so things like puzzle piece symbols are front and center.
The puzzle piece was historically associated with the idea that individuals with autism were "missing" a piece or were incomplete and was created without autistic input.
♾️ The infinity symbol represents the idea of infinite possibilities, reflecting the diversity of experiences within the autism spectrum. It emphasizes acceptance, understanding, and the celebration of neurodiversity. It was created by autistic individuals.
Many people still embrace the puzzle piece and feel it is a fitting representation, but many people have chosen to use the infinity symbol instead.
💲There is a “dark side” of autism that is rarely talked about, in that individuals with severe autism have significant barriers, intensive needs that cause financial strain.

Ep. 52: BCBA in Schools vs. Clinics – Pros, Cons, and What to Expect
00:36:15
Join us as we break down the pros and cons of being a BCBA in a school vs. clinic setting, covering collaboration, job stability, workload, and more!
🔑 Key Takeaways ✅ Team Collaboration Matters – Schools often provide a built-in multidisciplinary team (SLPs, OTs, teachers, etc.), while clinics may have fewer collaboration opportunities. ✅ Family Involvement Differs – Clinics typically have more direct parent involvement due to insurance requirements, while schools rely on IEP meetings and teacher communication. ✅ Job Stability & Work-Life Balance – Schools offer predictable schedules, summers off, and union protections, while clinics can have more flexibility but higher burnout potential. ✅ Paperwork & Caseloads – Clinics may have intense insurance-driven documentation, while schools balance IEPs, FBAs, and larger caseloads. ✅ Making an Impact – Schools allow for systemic change across students and staff, while clinics often focus on intensive, individualized progress.
📚 Resources and Ideas 📌 ABAI & Autism NJ Conferences – Professional development opportunities for BCBAs in schools and clinics. 📌 Licensure & Certification Considerations – Some schools require dual certification (e.g., special education or school psychology). 📌 Work-Life Balance & Pay – Important factors to research when considering a BCBA role in either setting.

Ep. 53: Teaching Positive Behaviors – Part 10 of the FBA Mini-Series
00:09:26
Continuing on in our FBA-BIP mini-series, we're at Step 10! This week, we’re tackling one of the most important steps in behavior intervention planning—choosing the right replacement behavior. Just reducing problem behavior isn’t enough; we have to actively teach what to do instead in a way that’s functional, motivating, and sustainable.
🔑 Key Takeaways ✅ Replacement behaviors must meet the same function – If a student yells to escape a task, teaching them to request a break makes sense. Giving them a fidget does not. ✅ Make it easy & efficient – The new skill must be as quick (or quicker) than the problem behavior, or it won’t stick. ✅ Teach what’s already in their repertoire – If a learner can’t say, “Can I take a break?” yet, start with something simpler, like using a break card. ✅ Plan for sustainability – Reinforcement should be natural whenever possible, so skills can generalize without heavy external rewards. ✅ Extinction matters – If the old behavior still works sometimes, students will keep using it. Staff must commit to only reinforcing the replacement behavior.
