This time, Mindful Meets welcomes a guest from New Jersey, USA.  Kaitlin shares her eating disorder story with us and how turning to a mindful, intuitive eating approach treated her eating behaviour and gave her a new and happy life with food.  Kaitlin describes herself as a wife, mom, and host of the "So What Else?" podcast.

We discuss the nature of bingeing, its psychology and the way it impacts living.  From her new place with her eating, Kaitlin talks to us about how this has changed the way she talks about food with her children and how she wants to bring them up without damaging attitudes to eating.

Sarah spent 50 years trapped in an eating disorder, in a body she loathed, in a world that praised slim and everything else was a failure.  In this candid conversation she talks about how her disordered relationship with food began and how she managed to get beyond negative body image and binge eating. 

Sarah now works as a mentor with the group Been There, a free resource, supporting anyone with negative issues with food and body image.   She talks about this marvellous work during our podcast chat.

 In this episode I'm chatting across the pond with Tia (Morell) Walden.  Tia has a really interesting journey to share with us.  She talks about beginning again, no matter what and no matter when.  This is what she did when she realised how much her eating was damaging her life.  

Tia is now a certified Holistic Nutritionist, Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, podcaster, and author of Obsessed With Mindful Eating - A Heart-Centered Approach to Nutrition.  She believes in using her energy and life experiences to empower others to take responsibility for bridging the gap between where they currently are and where they would like to be. To kick off the third series of The Mindful Eating Podcast I welcome Guy Shahar. 

Guy Shahar is an Energy Healer, Heartfulness Meditation practitioner and trainer and autism advocate.

Guy discovered energy healing later in life– though he realised that he had been using many of the same principles in his Heartfulness work.  Through his company, Heartful Healing  he works with clients all over the world to help them feel their best and live to their true potential.

Having enjoyed a career in industry and heading up 3 Public Companies; during 2016, following a life changing event it became imperative that he understood more about nutrition, gut health and what was going into his body.

This time on Mindful Meets I speak to Naomi Light.  Naomi is a couples and individual relationship therapist.  She shares her own relationship story and some tips for sustaining a healthy relationship.

Naomi is passionate about helping couples overcome challenges to connect in a deeper way. With her background in hypnotherapy and psychotherapy, Naomi now uses the leading research-based intervention for couples called the Gottman Method.

In this little mindful moment, specifically scheduled for the New Year, I talk about losing weight.  It's a big conversation.  How to lose weight - if you Googled that, you'd be there all day scrolling through the options.

I want to talk about how to do it with lasting success.  I also start the conversation with the fact that it is fine to want to lose weight (despite a lot of social media conversation to the contrary) but I do have certain caveats for you to think about. 

Much of my thinking is based on research done by the National Weight Registry in the US and from the National Centre for Eating Disorders who specialise in the treatment of weight loss and obesity, as well as EDs.

In this episode I'm talking to Vicky Fox, a level 5 reflexologist.  I had no idea about the far reaching benefits of reflexology until I spoke to Vicky.  These include (amongst others) increased circulation, healthy promotion of sleep as well as re energising, rejuvenating and stimulation of the different systems within your body.   It can also support a fertility, pregnancy and maternity journey, provide relief alongside palliative care and also help businesses to reduce stress in the workplace.  Amazing!

Vicky talks about her change of career into this area which has become a passion profession!  It can be enjoyed as a one off treatment or as part of the management for an ongoing condition.

Today we meet Bernie Wright.   Bernie is a BACP (Accred) Counsellor / Psychotherapist, Qualified Clinical Supervisor and Professional Trainer. Currently working as a Clinical Director for NEDDE Neurodiversity, Eating Disorders & Eating Distress.  She is a Master Practitioner in my field and passionate about the the subject of Eating Disorders & Neurodiversity.  

Bernie specialises in providing training for health professionals in working with those suffering with eating disorders & teaching practitioners how to work with  Neurodivergent people also suffering with eating disorders.

I met Bernie when I was studying for my own Master Practitioner and here she talks to me about different eating disorders, about bariatric surgery and the connection between eating issues and neurodiversity.

When we're overweight or have an unhealthy or destructive pattern of eating we can feel really bad about ourselves. At times like this it’s hard to summon up the energy to focus on the results we're looking for.  We get so bogged down in the fact that we can’t stay disciplined, that we are always tempted and that we can’t stick at anything.   This is overwhelming - the negative, small stuff dominates our thinking and we can’t break out of it – mine used to feel like a vice around my head.  

In this podcast i talk about how thinking more positively about yourself can help you change your relationship with food.

28 Jan 2023Your gut connects to everything! with Emma Jamieson - Mindful Meets #5200:42:22

Emma is  a registered nutritionist and health coach specialising in digestive health.

Why digestive health? Because Emma's experience means she knows how uncomfortable poor digestive health can be.  She was doubled over in pain every evening, looked six months pregnant by the end of the day due to bloating and was miserable cutting out all the foods she loved in the hope of identifying what was causing these debilitating symptoms.  She felt trapped in a body that was working against her. Her GP gave her a label – IBS – but that was as much as they could do and offered no further help or guidance. 

So Emma took matters into my own hands and began training as a nutritionist. On paper this was to enable a career change, but deep down she knew she was looking to improve her own health.

In our conversation, Emma shares her deep understanding of our amazing digestive system and the various factors in play that cause IBS and other gut-related conditions.  We talk about the impact of mindful eating and stress and it's a fascinating conversation!

Join me this time in conversation with Imogen Tingay.  Imogen has really ben through it!  She shares with us the experience of having chronic and acute eczema and the impact of turning to steroid creams.  Imogen's subsequent topical steroid withdrawal (TSW) journey to clear skin makes fascinating listening.  Steroid cream is a common topical eczema treatment but is it the right way to treat eczema?   Imogen talks about how to treat eczema naturally from what she learned from her personal experiences and what made the difference for her.   

Imogen now has clear skin and has found a way to an eczema cure forever. Hear Imogen's healing journey in this open and interesting conversation.  You may find her words helpful if you or someone in your family has eczema.  She is an inspiration.

Today I chat with the lovely Madi Myers.  Originally I was keen to hear all about Madi's adventures with fermented foods and then the conversation turned into much, much more.  Madi shares her experience with disordered eating and how she used intuitive eating to find stability in her relationship with food and how a business has turned into a mission to educate and support nutritional health, and encourage reduction of food waste. 

Fermented foods is a big part of her life.  Together with her husband Arthur, she founded The Crafty Pickle Co.  They are both nutritionists handcrafting gut-friendly, unpasteurised, living fermented foods from their workshop in South East Wales. Madi & Arthur are on a mission to reduce food waste by using as much perfectly edible, but imperfect or surplus produce as possible to craft their raw, vegan and naturally nutritious sauerkrauts, kimchis and kimchi juice. They also educate on fermentation, gut health and holistic health.

Vicky Midwood - AKA:  The Addictions Eliminator & Health Creator is an integrative health, nutrition and lifestyle coach who has been in the fitness and wellness world for over 32 years.  She is an author, podcaster (Raw Chatter) and creator of the B.L.A.S.T method to fabulous freedom.

Vicky started out as a fitness and fat loss instructor in 1991 as a way to justify and hide her bulimia, food, alcohol and exercise obsession - she shares her experiences with us on the podcast. On the outside she aimed to inspire, be a role model of fitness, strength and control, yet on the inside she was a full of guilt and shame and exhausted from hiding her real behaviour around food and alcohol.

We chat with Elle Mace this month.   It was difficult to come up with a title for this one because we talk about SO much!  Elle talks about her history with restriction, bingeing and bulimia but not just that, also she shares how she came to understand why it was happening and what aspects of her life had contributed to her eating behaviour.   

Elle has lived it and experienced it.  She has the experience of living with body dysmorphia and disordered eating which has driven her to be passionate to support anyone suffering with their relationship to food, their body, themselves and others.

 Elle Mace is a master practitioner in eating disorders, obesity and nutrition. She works with clients on a 121, group and online basis as well as running retreats and her own podcast.  Her chat with me talks about how she overcame her issues and what she thinks it important to heal others.  We chat about how to raise children without eating issues and the damage of dieting.

We share our coaching common ground and some tips about how you can start to recover from disordered eating.

Dana is a leading mental health and wellness expert, specialising in the gut brain axis. Dana believes that normalising poor mental health is not the correct objective because it is not normal! It’s the body’s way of telling us that something isn’t working as it should. She aims to inspire, motivate, and empower people with knowledge on how their bodies work and what we can do to support our bodies to work at their best. 

 When we understand the role that stress, genetics, poor nutrition and our lifestyles impact our mental health, and how we can make small, effective and achievable changes in each of these areas, then we can start to believe that poor mental health and poor resilience can be overcome. 

Before embarking on her Nutrition career Dana had a successful corporate career working as a consultant for PwC. During this career she saw the far-reaching impacts of stress and poor food choices on performance and health of those around her. Finally following her passion Dana started studying a BSc in Nutrition Science and completed her dissertation on the link between stress, gut health and mental health. 

 Today Dana works with individuals and companies throughout the UK running programmes and courses for reactive and preventative responses to stress and the impact on the gut. Dana has been featured in many publications, regularly speaks on podcasts and at conferences, notably at Food Matters Live this year.

Today's Mindful Meets with the effervescent Julie Mann.  Julie has been working as an actor in theatre, improvisation and role play workshops for over 40 years but that's not really why I invited her onto the podcast....

As a younger actor, when her daughter came along she wanted to work nearer home.  Julie knew it was smart to have several sources of revenue, Julie trained as a Hypnotherapist, Life Coach and EFT Practitioner and worked with clients from home too and became known as the Habit Fixer.

In our animated discussion we talk about personal awareness, change, understanding and self-compassion.  It might encourage you to take a different look at your own life.  

 Julie loves helping people to regain their mojo and age well by showing them how they can change their habits; mind, body and skin.  When you change your habits, you change your life!

This time on the podcast, I am joined by Nicola Dickinson to talk about something which was very new to me - Forest Bathing.  Do you need a swimsuit?  Actually, you don't!  Listen in to discover more about this amazing activity and how it can help you find peace and connection.  

Nicola was a beauty therapist for over 20yrs and then brought her own brand of natural hand and nail care to the market.  Then she decided that she needed a change, for her mental and physical wellbeing, realising that she had neglected these for far too long.

She needed to get more fresh air, exercise and be with people again, especially her family and not to have the stress of making and selling cosmetics around the world.  Then Nicola found Forest Bathing, which ticked all her boxes.  She completed the one year's training and hasn't looked back.

Nicola says that almost every aspect of her has changed for the better, her sleep, her diet, how and where she exercises as well as being out in fresh air, as well as her attitude to how she wants to live her life.

She says "It's the best thing I ever did!"

07 Oct 2024Movement, menopause and disordered eating with Cathy Houghton, Mindful Meets # 8201:01:36

Today I talk to Cathy Houghton.  She and I chat about weight loss, movement and disordered eating.  We also trained together at the National Centre for Eating Disorders so we chat a bit about that too.

Cathy is a Health and Movement Coach, coaching 1-2-1, couples and groups.  She specialises in coaching and training those with distressed relationships with food, exercise and movement.

Cathy qualified initially in Integrated Nutrition Health Coaching and Weight Loss psychology, and soon saw a need to acquire skills to work with disordered eating.  She completed the Master Practitioner training with NCFED, and the Advanced Certificate with Julia Buckroyd, as well as training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Coach.  Cathy is a Mindful Eating Practitioner, and a Mental Health First Aider, and has an extended Diploma in Neurodiversity and Disordered Eating.

As a Level 3 Personal Trainer, Cathy helps clients find balanced movement as a source of energy and positivity in their lives. 

For women (those identifying as women) Cathy offers non-diet, small group weight loss coaching, is a Menopause wellbeing coach & trainer, and runs an online Wellness Bookclub.

Today I am joined by a very special and very brave woman, Mel Bailey.  She talks to me candidly about the early family experiences which created her issues with food and the damaging eating behaviours that followed.  She describes how dieting caused her to gain a large amount of weight over decades of her life and how it was only by turning her back on dieting and seeking psychological and nutritional education that she changed her life and her relationship with food.  And it was a BIG change - a loss of 12 stone!

Welcome to this podcast (please stick with the slightly long intro music!) 

How to change my eating habits? The only way to change your eating habits is by retraining habits with small steps not big leaps.  In this LIVE stream podcast I explain why big, extreme changes don't work work.  And STAY TUNED UNTIL THE END when I give you 3 easy small wins to improve your eating.

In this podcast, I talk about how the sub-conscious needs to be retrained to understand what behaviour we want to change and why.  Because habits are learned steadily and over time we must employ small steps to change and not big leaps;  big leaps such as extreme diets or restriction don't work in the long run because they rely solely on willpower and don;t get the heart of the eating behaviour.  We need to be kinder to ourselves by taking it slowly, if you are looking for ways how to change your eating habits permanently. 

If you want to change eating habits you have to start slowly and with small steps.  We need to be kind to ourselves to change to healthy eating habits by retraining our sub-conscious to learn how to change eating behavior.  You can change eating habits to lose weight, improve nutrition and to change eating patterns but it must be done with small steps.  You can learn how to change your eating lifestyle through mindful eating and your can learn how to change bad eating habits through my online course.

11 Jan 2021Why dieting doesn't work! - Mindful Moment. #200:08:42

This podcast is about why dieting doesn't work and the reasons why dieting is bad.   Over 80% of diets don't work in the long term in fact there are several reasons why dieting is bad!  The way to lose weight is to stop dieting! In this podcast, extracted from a YouTube video, I talk about some of the reasons why diets don't work to help you understand why we need a new approach to lasting weight loss.

So instead - learn how to stop dieting and start living, stop yo yo dieting and lose weight for good.  This video gives several reasons why diet don't work.  The dieting industry is worth billions because it denies the fact that diets don't work and encourages you back for more of their diet mentality motivation.  But, it's not the only way to manage weight.   Mindful eating is the way to retrain how you think about food and to improve your eating behaviours - it's a way to get out of the fact that dieting is unhealthy.  You will lose weight healthily and naturally.  What's more you can find lasting weight loss by understanding why diets don't work and make a decision to do it another way.  You can learn how to lose weight in a lasting way.

There's  a more natural way to lose weight which means you never have to diet again.  Mindful eating isn't a quick fix diet which restricts what you can or can't eat.  It's the new way to find a better relationship with food, increase healthy eating and ditch the diets for good.  Because diets don' t work - this is the approach of The Mindful Eating Clinic, an approach which can teach you how to maintain a diet for weight loss.  So stop dieting and find food freedom forever!

My story about life with an eating disorder - binge eating, disordered eating and yo-yo dieting - and how I fixed my eating for good!  In this podcast, I talk about what it's like living with disordered eating.  I recorded this podcast to reinforce that if you are living with disordered eating behaviours then you are not alone.  I talk about a day in the life of binge eating disorder and a resulting pattern of dieting.   I hope to inspire those caught up in a similar life to seek help to resolve their eating once and for all.  I  want to inspire you that can fix it - that you don't have to endure living with disordered eating, emotional eating, comfort eating, bingeing or yo-yo dieting.    It IS possible to have a happy life with food and it's the reason why I started my Clinic, why I retrained, why I am reaching out to help others.  

Bingeing is a debilitating disorder, yo-yo dieting is demoralising and a dieting mentality creates anxiety and stress around food.  But irrespective of how long you have lived with disordered eating,  you don't have to resign yourself to these eating behaviours.  

I hope that my words help you and that my success in overcoming my eating issues inspires you.  Now I have no weight management issues,  I eat what I want, I understand my body and have sorted my mind. Overeating is a difficult thing to live with for many people.  At best it's uncomfortable to overeat and at worst it's really upsetting and causes feelings of disappointment and disgust.  But it IS possible to stop overeating - you just need to follow the right steps, in the right order.  You can find a way to stop overeating at night and you can stop overeating when bored too!  If you have been trying to find ways to stop overeating, in this podcast, I go through the 5 step process I use with my clients to demonstrate the best ways to stop overeating. Behaviour change is rooted in thinking.  At the beginning it's a lot less about doing and much more about thinking.   If we've operated within the parameters of a certain behaviour for a long time we could be forgiven for thinking that there's no point trying to change.

When it comes to eating and health, however, there is every point, and this podcast (and accompanying blog article) will give you some reasons why.  No matter how long you may have had a poor diet, your body will thank you for any improvements you can make, at any time.

Chris is a mindset, resilience and wellbeing coach and facilitator who helps people switch from auto-pilot to manual.  In his own words:

We all have an internal auto-pilot quietly working away in the background. This is fine for the routine and mundane tasks that we all need to get done, but just like we wouldn’t want our pilot to take off or land our plane in auto-pilot, staying in it for too long can be damaging. We over-rely on unhealthy coping mechanisms, repeating damaging cycles of thinking and behaviour, and let our negative thinking play havoc both in our personal and professional lives. 

Switching to manual is a choice, but an important one in today’s world, and one that can lead to more confidence, stronger relationships and living a happier life, at home and at work.

Oh my, it's all on the shelves isn't it?   But this podcast contains some ideas to help you manage the supermarket aisles!

By the way, I'm not really a killjoy!  I eat chocolate (always dark) and I drink wine (in moderation) and that's because I eat and drink for health as well as enjoyment.  This is always at the back of my mind.   Even at Christmas, you can switch to eating better quality chocolate (>70% cocoa)  which will give you added nutrition plus you're less likely to eat so much of it.  (Just saying....)

Mindful eating begins with mindfulness.  The ability to slow down and connect with what we are eating is essential to manage how much we eat.  It's also vital to create an awareness of the choices we are making towards improving the quality of the food we are eating.   This podcast is a guided mindfulness exercise.  It talks about being outside but if it's cold, you can do it anywhere.  If you can, take your shoes and socks off!

We're all looking for that magic way to stock to our goals.  This might be to lose weight or keep it stable or do make other healthy chances to our lives. We all have habits we'd like to change and many of us ask   "Why can't I just stick at it?!"

We can be hard on ourselves, despairing that we seem repeatedly to fail in our attempts to change how we eat.   But it's very unlikely that we'll be successful if our thinking is coming from a negative place.  This means that we just continue to pile on the pressure!

We need to learn how to create positive motivation to remain resilient and focussed.  Here are three motivation techniques to improve your chances of success.  This short Mindful Moment is a quick helpful podcast to build some motivation techniques.

In this Mindful Meet I am delighted to welcome Vanda Varga. 

Vanda is an accredited Trainer and Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Hypnotherapy and a neuro-rehabilitation specialist. She spent the last 18 years exploring how the brain/mind works and how it can be changed.

She is on a mission to help people, like you, who are committed to making a change, explore their inner excellence and become the very best version of themselves; guiding them on their journey of self-enablement to grow in confidence and self-esteem and lead a purposeful, proactive and fulfilled life.

She is a firm believer in people’s potential and life-long learning, knowing that everyone learns differently, therefore everyone’s growth will look different too.
