24 May 2021 | How a Mental Coach Thinks Before, During, and After a Tournament | 00:50:44
I played a golf tournament and documented my thoughts as I went through the week. I felt like I would want to be able to reference back to how I was thinking, and that it could possibly help somebody with how they should think before, during, and after an important round, or any round for that matter. ----- Thanks for listening! 28 Jul 2019 | I Need to Evolve | 00:08:46
Sometimes you have to look hard at yourself. Actually, all the time you have to look hard at yourself. You have to constantly deploy self-awareness against yourself. And when I do, I realize that I have been leaning to heavily on my own past experience and not pushing myself hard enough to evolve my knowledge and improve. Like I said in Part 1, my goal is to normalize mental coaching to the point that going to see a mental coach is the default for a struggling golfer. So if I have an ambition as big as that then I need to get better. So this is me checking in on myself and telling all of you my intentions. Question of the day: What would it take for your default when you're struggling to call up your mental coach instead of your swing instructor? 29 Nov 2020 | Bad Shots are Inevitable. So Why Aren’t You Ready for Them? | 00:16:37
When was the last time you played a round of golf without a bogey? It's not exactly common. How about something even more rare - playing a round without a bad shot/swing/chip/putt? It doesn't happen. Ben Hogan famously said even in his best rounds he only hit 1 or 2 perfect shots. So it's essential that you prepare mentally for bad shots, holes, scores, and tournaments. 09 Jun 2019 | Tiger’s Win at the 2019 Masters | 00:09:13
When you make mistakes, do you learn from them? Mistakes are inevitable. Everyone makes them. How people differ is how they RESPOND to their mistakes. Good players, mentally strong players, analyze their mistakes. They look hard in the mirror and figure out WHAT went wrong, WHEN it went wrong, HOW it went wrong, what that wrong feeling FELT like, and ultimately devise a PLAN to improve so as to correct that mistake in the future. This is what Tiger did coming off multiple close calls in the 2018 majors, and used what he learned to win the 2019 Masters. Waaaay behind the curve on this one, but the lessons and principles to be learned from Tiger's epic win are timeless. Hope you get some value out of it! Thanks for listening! 19 Jun 2019 | The Long Game | 00:06:08
5 minutes? More like 5 years. Patience and playing the long game. I believe this is a universal principle for success. But obviously it is not a "get rich quick scheme" or "7 steps to playing better golf". And that's the point. It is a marathon, and it requires patience. Behind every great player is an anonymous stretch of hours and weeks and months and years of hard work. I'm reluctant to prescribe tactics and tips, but I am fully committed to pushing players and people into believing in core truths. Running a MARATHON not a sprint. Subscribe and leave a review! A guest! For the first time ever on the show I have a guest, and this one is very special. Coach Mike McGraw spent 16 years coaching at Oklahoma State, a handful of years under Jay Seawell at Alabama, and is now the head coach at Baylor. Coach McGraw has won 3 NCAA championships, coached players such as Hunter Mahan, Charles Howell III, and Rickie Fowler, and his list of accomplishments goes on and on. 04 May 2020 | #53: There’s No One Way to Think | 00:09:50
A lot of us think that we have to do things just like to the pros in order to play like the pros. But I think that's a misconception that we should challenge ourselves on. What we do can weigh us down. So here's a challenge to change that way of thinking.

30 Dec 2019 | The Good and the Bad of 2019 | 00:27:21
This has been a really good year. When I look back over the whole year in retrospect it really looks like a roller coaster. A lot of lows where I was going through a slog of building a new business from scratch, waiting for new players to work with, and trying to think of new things to create and post. But so many highs, with a ton of newly learned skills, so many things that I created, and best of all dozens of people that I would've never talked to had I not started this venture.
So long story long, I have one person to thank for making this all worth it: you. Here's to creating more and better in 2020!!

23 Dec 2019 | Forget Your Goal | 00:21:13
Merry Christmas everybody! On this episode, I go through an excerpt of "Better Than I Found It" by Baylor Head Coach Mike McGraw. 19 Jul 2019 | Stick to the Process No Matter the Pressure | 00:09:55
In the middle of the biggest moment of my playing career I abandoned my routine. The same routine that I had been diligently doing for over a year before it. I did this because I just wanted to be present and soak in the cool moment. But what I didn't realize was that sticking to my process was HOW I would've enjoyed the moment even more. Whatever process you might have, stick to it even in the biggest moment. Don't let your emotions or the pressure sway you. Follow me on Instagram! Seek out failure. Embrace it. Love it. Welcome it with open arms. Because failure shows you what you need to improve on. Where you haven’t been thorough enough. 02 Sep 2020 | Why the Mental Game is Vital w/ Dr. Lindsey Blom | 00:30:10
How much of golf would you say is mental and how much is physical? 50/50? 60/40? 20/80? Regardless you will scarcely find someone that thinks it's all physical and no mental. So then does your practice time reflect those percentages? If you think any part of golf is mental then you should incorporate at least some mental training into your regimen, and Dr. Lindsey Blom makes a great case for that in this episode. ----- Want to try some actual mental training? 28 Mar 2023 | Dispelling Common Golf Psychology Myths w/ Raymond Prior - Part 1 | 00:47:36
In Dr. Prior’s upcoming book Golf Beneath the Surface (Amazon link to purchase--not an ad), a major theme is how the cliches and catch phrases and mental tips and tricks that we've heard so many times are mostly just myths. They’ve been generally accepted as truths but don't actually have much or any supporting evidence to back them up. So you could look at this episode as a teaser for the book and some of the deeper evidence based psychology that you will learn reading it, but I think equipping yourself with this knowledge will allow you to be more informed in fact checking what you read and hear, as well as how to specifically apply the actual scientifically backed psychology that will help you play better golf. ----- Raymond Prior, PhD: Raymond Prior's website: btsmindset.com Amazon book- Golf Beneath the Surface: The New Science of Golf Psychology Raymond Prior, PhD on Twitter: @bts_mindset ----- Episode topics: 00:00 Intro 02:42 Myth #1 - “Just be Positive” 11:51 Myth #2 - “Distraction techniques” 23:50 Myth #3 - “Willing the ball into the hole” 34:02 Myth #4 - “Just forget about a bad shot” 39:38 Extra - “How much block/technique practice should I be doing?” ----- Take the Mental Game Assessment and learn your top mental game traits and your areas in most need of improvement. ----- Click here to sign up for The Mental Re-Grip ⛳️ newsletter to receive golf psychology help in your email inbox every-ish Tuesday. ----- Have a suggestion for a topic or guest? 18 Nov 2019 | Special Guest Boston Univ Coach Bruce Chalas on Perspective and Counterintuitive Thinking | 00:29:43
I talk with Boston University Head Women's Golf Coach Bruce Chalas to talk about his philosophies on the mental game and how individuals improve differently from each other. Coach Chalas is a counterintuitive thinker, something that a lot of golf coaches aren't because they're afraid they might say something wrong. Coach Chalas is more interested in the long-term improvement of the person rather than the short-term good scores, yet his coaching has produced some awesome results!

05 Apr 2023 | Dispelling Common Golf Psychology Myths w/ Raymond Prior - Part 2 | 00:54:53
Welcome to part 2 of 2 where Raymond Prior, PhD and I work through another set of common golf psychology myths. If you haven't listened to part 1, I highly recommend it. In part 1 we talked about myths and cliches like “just be positive”, why distracting yourself is unhelpful, how you can’t just will the ball into the hole or make yourself focus, and it’s impossible to just forget a bad shot. We also had a little bonus at the end talking about block vs random practice and how much you should be challenging yourself in practice. In part 2 we talk about what's deceiving about the common wisdom surrounding nerves and anxiety, perception vs. reality, muscle memory, pre-shot routines, alcohol helping your anxiety, sleep being optional, and we take a deep dive on the yips that you're not going to want to miss. ----- Raymond Prior, PhD: Raymond Prior's website: btsmindset.com Amazon book- Golf Beneath the Surface: The New Science of Golf Psychology Raymond Prior, PhD on Twitter: @bts_mindset ----- Episode topics: 00:00 Intro 02:50 Myth # 4 - “Nerves = Anxiety” 14:12 Extra - Yips deep dive 20:35 Myth # 5 - “Perception is Reality” 26:40 Myth # 6 - “Muscle memory” 29:24 Extra - Pre-shot routines - Need em or not? 32:55 Myth # 7 - “Alcohol for 1st tee anxiety” 43:25 Myth # 8 - “I don’t need to sleep” 48:27 Extra - The best thing to do after you get a golf lesson ----- Take the Mental Game Assessment and learn your top mental game traits and your areas in most need of improvement. ----- Click here to sign up for The Mental Re-Grip ⛳️ newsletter to receive golf psychology help in your email inbox every-ish Tuesday. ----- Have a suggestion for a topic or guest? 23 May 2023 | The Purpose of Meditation for Golf | 00:27:17
On this episode, we talk about meditation. What is it? How to do it? Why should I do it? How will it help my golf game? And if you’re interested in nerding out with me and want to read more about the benefits of meditation/mindfulness practice, here’s the best research paper I’ve personally read about it: Meditation experience is associated with difference in default mode network activity and connectivity And here’s an excerpt from Raymond Prior’s book on just a “few” of the benefits mindfulness practice can have on you as a person: “A massive body of research shows people who practice mindfulness tend to be happier, more optimistic, more hopeful, and more fulfilled with their chosen crafts. They are more satisfied with their lives and grateful for what they have. They are less anxious, stressed, fearful, and depressed. They are less likely to repeatedly fall into unproductive habit loops and lose control in stressful environments. They are more emotionally intelligent and emotionally agile, allowing them to respond to negative emotions more effectively. They are more likely to engage in behaviors that lead to better health and higher performance related to physical fitness, nutrition, and sleep. They are physically healthier, have stronger immune systems, and even get fewer colds. They are more motivated to pursue passions and interests. They are more conscientious and openminded, leading to faster and better learning. They’re more resilient when faced with challenges and show more grit when pursuing endeavors that are important to them. They are more forgiving, empathic, and are better able to see other’s perspectives. They have closer and more functional relationships with friends, family, and romantic partners. “Oh, and people who practice mindfulness are more composed under pressure and have more stable confidence. “In the coming years, mindfulness practices will be as common, and required, for sport and performance as strength and conditioning training because the positive impacts are measurable and undeniable; those who don’t understand and don’t practice mindfulness will be left lagging behind.” Dr. Raymond Prior. 25 Oct 2019 | How to Stop the Vicious Circle | 00:31:23
You know the feeling. You're playing a round of golf. You're playing well for several holes. But inevitably you encounter some kind of difficulty, whether you hit a bad shot or you drew a bad lie in the rough or you have a long par 3 with a tucked pin or you're coming down to the wire at the end of a tournament. This happens pretty much every round. It's very rare that a round of golf goes perfectly smoothly from start to finish without any hiccups. But that event happening doesn't define you. It's how you react to it that defines you.

So how can we improve our attention? And how can we apply that to goal-setting for the new year? Sources: (1) Sollisch, J. (August, 2010). Multitasking makes us all a little dumber. 23 Oct 2020 | How a Regular Person Can Become a Scratch Golfer w/ Sean Denning of parmachine.com | 00:34:14
Sean Denning is just a "regular guy". He works a regular job. Has a regular family. Has regular time constraints. Yet he improved his handicap from around a 4, into a scratch in just over a year. Now at first glance that might not sound like a lot and it might sound like a long time. But look at your improvement during your own life. Has it been dramatic? Has it been fast? If you're like me, then most likely not. Improvement is slow in golf, and making big strides is really difficult. And the better you are the harder it gets to improve even further. But what I like about this conversation and Sean's story is that he did it with an hour here and an hour there. He didn't have a tour player schedule. But HOW he spent his time is what made the difference. If you don't have quantity, then extreme quality will have to do. Hope you enjoyed this episode, because I know I did. 16 Apr 2020 | Visualization Practice | 00:12:39
A lot of us are looking for things we can be doing during our downtime, between tournaments, or just a good daily habit to exercise your mind. This visualization practice is a good way to fill those gaps! The first half of this episode describes the why, what, and how of visualization/meditation. And the second half is a recording of a visualization practice that I do for myself. But just because it's for me doesn't mean you can't use it. It's generic enough to apply to you, while specific enough to simulate the feelings that you should have before, during, and after a competitive round of golf. Hope this helps! 21 Jun 2019 | Gary Woodland Plays the Long Game | 00:06:13
I've done a little research on Gary Woodland since he won the U.S. Open last Sunday. I didn't know this but in 2012 and 2013 he made a change to his agent, swing instructor, AND hired a new mental coach. These changes paid off relatively quickly by him winning some tournaments in the next year. But the big payoff took quite a long time. It was 6 YEARS before he finally won a major, despite being a regular player expected to win. He took his time, never lost his perspective, and it paid off. And I'm betting that this perspective doesn't change anytime soon for Gary. Subscribe and leave a review! Thanks for listening! For lots more, head to joshnicholsgolf.com.
