18 Jun 2024Deciding About Deciding00:22:53

Have you ever made a sound decision that turned out poorly, only to be harshly judged (or to harshly judge yourself) in hindsight?

It's a common trap: we often evaluate decisions based on their outcomes, ignoring the quality of the decision-making process itself. But what if that unlucky choice was actually the best decision given the information available at the time?

Making decisions is a core responsibility for leaders. Yet, many lack an intentional framework or methodology for how they make decisions and as a result, spend little time reflecting about how strong their decision-making skills actually are and what they can learn from past decisions.

In this episode of The Manager Track podcast, Ramona explores the importance of a thoughtful approach to decision-making.

She outlines key considerations like fast vs. slow decisions, the levels of decision-making involving your team, and identifying your personal decision filters. Ramona also shares guidance on facilitating productive decision-making meetings to drive toward clear outcomes.

Whether you're struggling with ineffective consensus-building, analysis paralysis from seeking too much information, or a lack of decisiveness, this episode provides valuable insights.

17 Jan 2023ChatGPT and 8 Ways it Can Help You at Work00:23:22

Chances are high that you've heard the buzz about ChatGPT. The discussions about this newly released AI tool has spread like wildfire on social media and beyond. So for this episode of The Manager Track podcast, I decided to share 8 common tasks that you could begin streamlining in the new year using ChatGPT (or other AI tools for that matter).

Yes, some of these tasks might have taken me an hour to complete on my own but can now be done in 15 minutes or less.

ChatGPT was released in late November 2022 by the startup OpenAI. The chatbot uses machine learning to come up with unique responses to the questions that you ask it. You interact with it in a conversational way, which makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions and provide specific answers to very targeted questions or prompts you pose.

But in my humble opinion, this is just the beginning of the exponential increase in businesses leveraging AI to perform tasks currently done by or heavily supported by humans. As such, I am really interested in seeing how AI will evolve and influence the workplace in the coming years. I'd love to hear from you about tasks you are streamlining with ChatGPT or if you have come across any other resources I should know about. Email me at contact@ramonashaw.com.

05 Dec 2023Unfounded Worries About Leadership00:13:24

The one person you spend more time with than anyone else is yourself. So, it's no surprise that your internal dialogue with yourself is also more crucial than any other conversation you could have.

In my coaching sessions, I often discover that my clients' internal conversations are the stumbling blocks for their career success. For example, without evidence, they've convinced themselves that giving direct feedback will lead to being disliked by their direct reports or that holding their team accountable might brand them as a micromanager.

But here's the truth: these worries are often more unfounded than valid. The reality often differs from the fears our internal dialogues present.

In this episode, I will share the most common unfounded worries about leadership and provide insights to help you reframe those doubts, empowering you to move forward more confidently in your leadership role.

04 Apr 2023The Micromanaging Dilemma: Balancing Control and Trust00:19:43

How do you balance control and trust? This is the dilemma of micromanagement.

While micromanaging is not a good leadership style it can be used as an effective time-limited and targeted management tool when a situation calls for it.

In this episode of The Manager Track Podcast, I will be sharing when you should micromanage, and how to do it well so that it is not being perceived negatively by direct reports, but actually seen as supportive.

20 Apr 2021Leaders: Commit to Yourself! - An Interview with Ela Staniak00:37:39

...How committed are you to yourself? To your personal growth, your happiness, and your contentment? So committed you would stop WHAT you are doing and see HOW you are doing when you're feeling triggered, hurt, anxious, restless, or stressed?

So often we are in such a hurry to do things and get stuff done that we completely ignore ourselves.

We break the promises and commitments we made to ourselves to fulfill promises and commitments made to others.

Helping, supporting, and caring for others are all wonderful traits but what happens if and when we give up on ourselves in the process of doing so?

Committing to ourselves and our own needs is a huge part of Self Leadership and in my view, Leadership starts with Self Leadership.

Now, I know this is easier said than done. I agree with Mary Kay Ash when she said “The first step is the hardest – making a commitment to yourself, for yourself.”

And that's why I'd like you to meet Ela Staniak. Ela is an amazing leadership coach from Australia and the topic of Commitments is right down her ally. I had a chance to speak with her about committing to ourselves and what happens if we don't. Listen to our conversation in this episode.

12 Jul 2022Over-Identifying With Your Job00:14:27

Remember that time when you had a "WIN" at work?  Maybe you nailed an impressive presentation, got some awesome praise, or closed a major deal - and you felt great about yourself, right?

But then on another day, you got some criticism, or maybe your presentation fell flat and didn't go as planned, or perhaps you lost an important deal or a big client and you blamed yourself because you knew there was something you should've done differently.

If those two scenarios resonate with you then you are definitely not alone, my friend.

The ultimate result is that we're over-identifying with our jobs. In fact, we've got our self-worth and our job success wound up so tightly together that is as if we've got a fast pass in hand for the emotional rollercoaster, skipping the lines (or worse yet never even getting off the ride) and both self-worth and job success are sitting side-by-side in the same wagon.

In this week’s episode of The Manager Track podcast, I explain why it’s bad for you, the challenges this brings up (and I see them all the time in conversations with clients), and how it will hold you back in your career. I’ll also explain how to stop this rollercoaster and get out of it so you can feel good about yourself regardless of what’s happening at work and therefore become a way stronger, more adaptable, and feedback-seeking leader.

12 Oct 2021Is It Me or Is It Them?00:15:44

"Is it me or is it them?" This is a question that I hear so often from new managers.  So, let's peel the onion on this one in this week's episode.

Part of your job as a leader, whether explicitly stated in your job description or simply implied, is your responsibility to manage people's performance.

For most, this is the "sticky" part of leadership. The shadow side of all the good stuff that comes with the new title and status. And if you're in your first leadership role then this is brand new territory.

Managing people who aren't meeting expectations is never fun. In fact, it can really push us outside of our comfort zones. It can bring up beliefs and assumptions such as...

  • Who am I to tell them how to do their job?
  • Maybe they don't do it because they don't like or respect me.
  • Maybe they think I'm a complete micromanager or way too nitpicky.
  • Why do I have to constantly "babysit"? That's not what I should have to do.
  • What if they hate me after I give them feedback and I start getting a bad reputation as a manager?

If any of those sound familiar, then this episode is for you.

It's normal to feel challenged and uncomfortable and to be wondering if it's you or if it's them.

In this episode, you'll learn...

  • The main reasons leading to underperformance
  • Why the "grey zone" is what often makes it so hard to manage performance
  • The 3 questions to ask yourself to know if it's you or if it's them
  • What to do to fix your part

Ready? Hit play and let's go!

15 Sep 2020Using LinkedIn To Attract Job Opportunities - With Chris Villanueva00:25:41

Studies show that 70-85% of jobs (especially the good ones) are filled through internal candidates or employees' networks.

That's a staggering amount!

So to attract higher quality and more frequent job opportunities we need to be well connected and we need others to know what we do and what we care about.

While there are many ways to build your network and develop your personal brand, I strongly believe that LinkedIn is one of the most effective ones.

And for that reason, I invited Chris Villanueva, founder of a resume and LinkedIn profile writing company, to The Manager Track podcast and I'm excited to share this interview with you today.

16 Apr 2024When our Minds Trick Us Into Ineffective Leadership - Interview with Cayla Horey00:42:34

Daring to sound cliché... but I'm pretty sure you've heard phrases like, "Think about what you are thinking about," and "Our thoughts become our beliefs, and our beliefs become our action." But have you ever had someone call out your mental blind spots?

Do you know what mental traps might be impacting your effectiveness as a leader? Would you be able to recognize them yourself?

In this episode, Ramona and her guest and fellow Leadership Coach, Cayla Horey share examples of situations when a leader's internal dialogue was about to trip them up but a coaching conversation cleared the path for a more effective leadership experience.

Cayla explains that our brains offer us constant streams of thoughts, and we have a natural tendency to simply accept and believe those thoughts as truth.

However, these unchallenged narratives can lead us down unproductive paths, causing us to make decisions or take actions that can ultimately hurt our teams and organizations.

This episode demonstrates how replacing limiting mindsets with more empowering ones that are as equally true, can unlock dramatically better outcomes for you as a leader.

If you are interested in developing a keen sense of self-awareness and identifying mental blind spots then this episode is for you.

21 Sep 2021How Great Leaders Control Their Egos00:27:12

Here is the thing when it comes to our egos... It is a lot easier to see someone else’s than it is to see your own.

It’s like that little piece of spinach stuck in between your teeth. You can go all day not knowing it’s there, but everyone else sees it.

When you finally look in the mirror and discover that it's there, it’s like, “Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

But let's be clear. Having an ego isn’t the problem. The problem is when the ego grows beyond what's helpful. And unfortunately, successful leaders who climb the ranks faster than others are particularly prone to that.

This is why I want to tackle this topic in this week's episode of The Manager Track so that you can have an honest look in the mirror, know what to pay attention to and how to keep your ego in check if and when needed.

Specifically, you'll finish the episode knowing...

  1. What differentiates an ego-driven leader from a humble leader and how to detect where you stand
  2. The 4 ego-driven thinking traps that get us into trouble and why new managers, in particular, are prone to be at the effect of them
  3. The 4-step process to curb your ego when it gets tempted to take charge

05 Apr 2022People-Pleasing Leaders: An Oxymoron00:22:48

Do you find it hard to say no to people? Do you struggle to meet people’s needs all the time? Do you often avoid conflict or confrontation?

If you’re answering ‘yes’ to any of these answers – you’re probably a people-pleaser.

It affects so many of us and people-pleasing is a frequent topic in coaching conversations with my clients. But I have found some proven strategies to overcome this tendency, which I will share with you in today’s episode.

Sure, there are also strengths to being a people-pleaser, such as being an advocate and a strong team player. But the weaknesses include taking on too much work, avoiding conflict or negative feedback, and ultimately, becoming resentful.

If you can relate to people-pleasing, then it’s time to tackle its root cause.

I unpack this further in this week's episode of The Manager Track podcast because people-pleasing gets in the way of you reaching your full potential as a leader. But by addressing your people-pleasing tendencies, you will be able to move forward in your work and personal life.

And when it comes to figuring out what to say 'Yes' or 'No' to, I find these questions from Paula Cookson’s ‘The Liberated Self’ to be super powerful:

  1. Are there other people who can do this task?
  2. Do I have time to do this task?
  3. Do I actually have an interest in doing this task?
  4. Do I have the energy to do this task?
  5. Do I feel pressured, or have a fear of angering or disappointing someone else?
  6. Will I resent myself or others if I say ‘yes’ to taking on this task?

29 Aug 2023Leading as an Introvert00:23:47

In this episode of the Manager Track Podcast, I will be pulling back the curtain on the topic of leading as an introvert. Not only will I challenge the notion that extroversion is a requirement of effective leadership, but I'll also reveal some other common misconceptions about being an introverted leader. I'll be diving into the benefits of introversion as a personality type and provide tips that will help introverted leaders leverage their strengths to become just as effective as their extroverted counterparts.

So if you're an introvert who aspires to lead, are currently leading and worry about having to hide your introversion, or are simply curious about the dynamics of introverted leadership, this episode is for you.

You can check it out here: www.ramonashaw.com/174-introvert

Action Steps:

  • Recognize and debunk the myths surrounding introverted leadership.
  • Reflect on your own inclinations and understand that introversion and extroversion exist on a spectrum.
  • Focus on understanding your own strengths and leverage them, irrespective of where you fall on the introversion-extroversion scale.
  • Challenge the cultural biases and be aware of them, but don't let them hold you back.
  • Embrace the unique qualities that introverted leaders bring to the table and understand how they can be harnessed for effective leadership.

16 Aug 2022When a Direct Resigns, What's Your Responsibility?00:18:41

It can be tricky when one of your direct report resigns, especially when they’ve been doing a great job.

If you are a new manager, you may not have experienced a resignation yet, but it is inevitable that at some point an employee will resign.

When you hear them say it out loud or you read their termination letter, you may experience self-doubt and question what you could have done better, or why you didn’t see it coming.

But this is not the time to shame and blame yourself, but instead to be really self-compassionate and to use this situation as a learning opportunity.

In this week’s episode of The Manager Track podcast, we are going to talk about what is and isn’t your responsibility when a direct report resigns, why self-

compassion is important during this time, and how you can learn and grow as a leader from this situation.

16 Jan 2024Coachability00:21:20

In this week's episode of the Manager Track podcast, host Ramona Shaw delves into the intriguing subject of coachability and its crucial role in personal and professional development. She begins by setting the stage with a helpful overview of what coaching conversations entail and then unpacks the four pivotal aspects of coachability: self-reflection, openness to feedback, action-taking, and self-accountability.

A question to consider: When something happens, do you think outward of what were the circumstances or what were other people doing? Or are you self-reflecting and considering what you chose to do or not to do?

14 Nov 2023Ownership Mindset00:20:54

Mark Pincus, the founder of Zynga, once said that leaders should "make everyone the CEO of something."

But that's easier said than done. So how do you go about cultivating an ownership mindset, not only for yourself, but all of your direct reports as well? I mean, is it even possible to affect how other people view their ownership of something?

In this week's episode, I wanted to highlight the importance of having an ownership mindset in leadership and explore some of the common challenges and negative consequences of a low ownership mindset within teams.

If you've ever wanted tips on how to boost your team members' autonomy and accountability to foster a more creative and independent work environment then this episode is for you!

19 Mar 2024Current-Day Lessons from Historical Leaders - with Moshik Temkin00:50:30

Do great leaders make history, or does history make great leaders?

Whether it’s a political upheaval like what Napoleon faced, an economic depression as with Roosevelt, or a company facing an existential challenge, great leaders have historically grasped these moments as opportunities for significant change.

In fact, the desire to bring about positive change and make a difference is a common thread among all outstanding leaders. But while studying successful leaders offers valuable lessons, learning from past failures can be equally insightful.

In this episode, Ramona and guest, Moshik Temkin, have a captivating conversation full of engaging stories about historical leaders, both the successful and some very unsuccessful events that have shaped the world we live in today.

Moshik is recognized as a distinguished professor who has significantly contributed to the fields of leadership and history. His expertise has led to teaching positions at reputable institutions, including Harvard. Temkin's scholarly essays and articles have garnered attention in esteemed publications including The New York Times, The Nation, Journal of Democracy, The New Republic, and the Los Angeles Times. His recent book, Warriors, Rebels, and Saints: The Art of Leadership from Machiavelli to Malcolm X, is a comprehensive examination of historical leadership that has been praised for its depth and insight into the journeys of past leaders.

One of our favorite quotes from the show: "I think what they had in common is that they spoke their truth. They were not concerned with whether people liked them or not. In fact, they understood that sometimes, and this might not be a pleasant thing to say, but sometimes, really, transformational leadership means that you are going to alienate people, some people, and you are going to create enemies. And Franklin Roosevelt himself said to the American people, he said, I want you to judge me by the enemies that I have made."

07 Nov 2023What My Most Successful Clients Have in Common00:21:12

Every year since 1935 and coming up on December 9, football enthusiasts gather around to see who will win the esteemed Heisman Trophy. Only the best of the best even make it on the ballot. But underneath, there is even more instilled in the heart of a champion that sets them apart.

The Heisman Trophy is awarded to the player who not only displays outstanding athletic abilities but embodies qualities that make them a true leader on and off the field. These qualities, often hidden beneath the surface, are what count in the selection process for this award.

And just like for these athletes, there are also some hidden qualities that my most successful clients display.

In this episode, I'm going to share with you six qualities that set my most successful clients apart. I've been so inspired by these qualities that I try to embody them myself in my own journey.

20 Dec 20225 Common Blind Spots Leaders Uncover in their 360 Assessments00:25:18

Over the past couple of months, I have done numerous 360-degree assessments and debriefs with leaders across the ranks.

While the results are highly personalized based on the specific feedback from direct reports, colleagues and managers, there are also some themes that stand out to me as broader common challenges for leaders. In this episode, I'll share with you my personal observations on what those are.

As we approach the holiday break, I invite you to listen to this episode and set aside some time to self-reflect on this past year and how you want to show up as a leader and grow in the new year. 23 Feb 2021Is Your Thinking Helping or Hurting You?00:15:26

When we think something over and over again, they quickly become patterns and those patterns then turn into beliefs.

Now believes can either be positive beliefs, things that will actually help us and support us and make us feel more confident and be more effective.

Or beliefs that can make us doubt ourselves very more and be less effective and not create the results that we really want.  But they're not that easy to uncover.

In this episode, I'm sharing the 6 most common thinking patterns that many of us have running in our minds, whether consciously or unconsciously.

11 May 20213 Big Mistakes New Managers Make & How to Avoid Them00:24:42

Becoming a new manager can be both exciting and overwhelming.

The biggest challenge is that most new managers don't receive any leadership training. Yet, the skills you need to succeed as a manager are completely different from the skills you needed to perform well as an individual contributor.

Because it's such a big transition, it’s very likely that you’ll make some mistakes as you ramp up in your new manager role. There are common missteps you can prevent, however, if you’re properly prepared.

In this episode, I'm sharing 3 big mistakes many new managers make and how to avoid them.

23 Nov 2021Leaders' Exhaustion00:20:55

Imagine this: you’re a high-performing manager taking your career seriously. Lately, though, you've been feeling exhausted and worn out.

You know, intellectually speaking, that when people take care of themselves, they feel better, and maybe even work better.

But deep down, you also believe that working harder and longer than everyone else is what made you successful, and in the fast-paced, intensely demanding world you operate in, that’s honestly what you think it takes.

So, you keep working long hours, respond to emails and messages way into the evening and even on your off days, and the idea of self-care... well is just an idea if we're real for a moment.

But now, work seems heavy and tiring, especially the "people" part of it.

If you can relate to this, maybe if it rings true for you right now or you've been in a situation like this before, then listen up!

Burnout, exhaustion, anxiety, and depression are all on a rapid rise since the beginning of the pandemic and even without taking the implications of COVID into consideration, many workplaces foster a work and performance culture that's simply not sustainable.

In my experience working with leaders day in and day out, many of which share the pressure hanging over them and how they feel exhausted from the pace and weight they carry.

And this is not to be taken lightly. If you've ever read stories from people recovering from burnout for years, it's simply not worth messing with it! It often takes years to feel like 100% again. Figuring out how to prevent it and learning how to deal with stress is crucial in the world we live in.

In this week's episode of The Manager Track, we tackle this conversation and look at what are the reasons why so many of us feel exhausted (hint: it's not just the workload!) and what shifts will help ease the load and slow down the pace without sacrificing your career.

26 Jul 2022Re-Release: 12 Unspoken Rules of Management00:21:34

Being in a leadership role comes with a lot of unspoken rules. Things that are not written in your job description, yet are critical for you to know in order to succeed.

More precisely, these unspoken rules are all about these small, often overlooked things that can make a big difference in how people see you, how they feel in your presence, and the trust they have in you.

I got thinking about these unspoken rules when I was walking my new puppy and realized how little I knew about the "proper" behaviors of dog owners and how I doubted myself in many moments while also realizing a few times after the fact that I just committed an unintended dog-owner crime... 😳

The exact same thing happens when you're new to management. And so, I sat down and recorded this podcast episode about the 12 unspoken rules of management (particularly relevant for new managers).

To give you a sneak peek, here are just 3 of them:

  • More is just more, it's not better!
  • Feeling uncomfortable doesn't mean you're doing it wrong.
  • If you're not repeating yourself, you're not communicating enough.

And there are 9 more important, unspoken rules that I address in this podcast. Now, this isn't a complete list but it's a great start.

24 Jan 2023Prepare for The Worst00:20:40

Preparing for the worst isn't about having a pessimistic outlook. It's about being realistic and prepared so that you can make smart choices if stuff hits the fan.

When we think ahead, evaluate risks, and prepare for the worst we demonstrate the skill of being a proactive leader (vs. a reactive leader). And as a result, we are way better prepared, aware, and able to navigate challenges than when we're being caught off guard.

In this episode of The Manager Track Podcast, I am going to share an exercise called The Pre-Mortem which is inspired by Stoicism.

I have done a couple of episodes on this podcast about the intersection of Stoicism and Leadership, and will likely talk about the topic a little bit more over the next few months, especially as I am in the process of writing a book about Stoic Leadership as we speak :-)

You will walk away from this episode with the knowledge of how to make a solid plan for 2023 by conducting the Pre-Mortem exercises.

19 Sep 2023Emotional Labor00:16:22

Emotional labor, it's that game face we put on when we have doubts, worries, or fears, but others expect confidence from us.

Let's face it, that can be exhausting and draining.

But here's the thing, if we ignore this emotional labor, it can lead to overwhelm, burnout, and loss of motivation.

There are ways to manage emotional labor effectively. In this episode, I'll discuss the concept of "emotional labor" in the context of leadership and its implications, including the feeling of exhaustion, stress, and overwhelm it can cause as well as provide some practical tips to help manage the symptoms it can cause.

You can watch it on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/y7xAAb2SvXs

Action Steps:

  • Recognize the emotional labor you're exerting in your leadership role.
  • Regularly reset and find ways to manage your emotional well-being.
  • Determine where you can be more genuine and where you need to project certain emotions.
  • Implement boundaries and practice compassionate detachment.
  • Be self-compassionate and give yourself the grace to feel and process emotions.

13 Jul 20213 Tips to Influence Other People's Decisions00:18:14

Ever been super convinced that your idea was the best but then to your complete surprise your boss decided to take a different route?

The reason for this might have been your boss's different perspective and rock-solid reason for that but it could also have been due to the fact that most of our decisions are based on emotions, not logic!

If you rely mostly on data, logic, and facts to make your case, then you're likely doing a poor job trying to influence other people's decisions.

And influencing and persuading other people is not an unethical thing. Quite the opposite. It's a requirement for great leadership.

In fact, I like what Marshall Goldsmith shared in an HBR article on the topic of influence:

"When presenting ideas to upper management, realize that it is your responsibility to sell — not their responsibility to buy."

And because so many of my clients want to develop their influence and persuasion skills, I thought I'd share some quick but very actionable tips with you as well in this podcast episode.

You may have spent years developing your technical expertise but as you grow as a leader, learning how to influence will become significantly more important.

So my hope is that by making an investment in learning how to influence and persuade, you'll be able to have a bigger positive impact on the people you lead and your organization overall.

10 Aug 2021How Do You Measure Your Own Performance?00:13:39

How do you know if you're doing a good job at work?

Is it praise and recognition from others? A promotion? A bonus? Or a good performance review?

The likelihood is pretty high that one of those sounded right to you.

But what all these answers have in common is that these results are not fully in your control. All of them depend on other people and their needs and wants or on external factors such as business growth and revenue, etc.

For example, what if someone else gets promoted over you? Does that mean you're not good enough yet? You can probably see how quickly this assumption can lead us down a vicious cycle of self-doubt or frustration and disappointment.

In this episode, I invite you to rethink how you measure your own performance and base your assessment solely on things that are 100% within your control.

30 Jan 2024Changing Behaviors & Achieving Goals00:24:31

"Quitter's Day."

No, it's not the day that a person quits their job. It's the second Friday in January, designated as the day when most people are likely to give up on their New Year's resolution (unofficially, of course).

Change, no matter how big or small can be difficult because our brains are wired to seek established patterns of consistency.

I'm sure you can easily recall that feeling of discomfort when you've tried doing something new in the past. Maybe you wanted to get better at delegating work and you leaned into it. But seconds later you felt like you made a mistake and should take that task right back.

This feeling of discomfort is normal but when left unmanaged can result in a pattern of backsliding into old comfortable ways.

However, there are ways to create a positive feedback loop that fuels continued growth and self-improvement. If you are looking for a blueprint to help you break through your old behaviors and achieve new goals then this episode is for you.

Waiting for motivation to strike is an unreliable approach, but by implementing consistent strategies, you can conquer procrastination and discomfort.

In this episode of The Manager Track podcast, I will be sharing tips for how you can increase your level of self-discipline and become good at accomplishing the things you don't like doing. You can't just wait for motivation to show up and overpower your procrastination or discomfort (because you'd be waiting a long time), the only reliable solution is implementing strategies and consistency into how you handle the tasks that you need to achieve.

29 Jun 2021From IC to Manager - 4 Main Shifts00:18:28

40-60% of new managers fail or underperform within their first 2 years on the job!

It's shocking, and it hurts! If you're new to leadership then you basically have a 50-50 chance of succeeding.

Now, you might think your past success will protect you from future failure but here is the thing: what got you here won't get you there!

If you underperform you obviously miss opportunities for career growth, raises, and promotions which hurts financially...

But what's even worse is that your self-confidence might drop to the floor and you might start thinking about giving up that dream of reaching the C-Suite one day.

And that's what's so hard!

Because the truth is that the problem is not YOU!

The reason all this is happening is that the vast majority of new managers, and likely you as well, never receive the leadership training they desperately need.

And that's a huge risk.

As you transition from an IC role into your first leadership role, you have to make several changes to what you do and how you do things.

In this week's episode, I discuss 4 main shifts in the following domains:

  1. Strategy and Vision
  2. Accountability and Responsibility
  3. Performance
  4. Execution

30 Nov 2021Having High Standards00:18:22

How high do you set the bar for yourself and for others? If you're anything like most of my clients then your answer is probably "pretty high."

The questions that beg to be answered are... is having high standards a good thing or a bad thing? And how do you know if your standards are just high or if they're in fact unrealistic?

There are two very important aspects to consider when answering these questions; the responsibilities that come with having high standards and the relationship you have with yourself and the standards you aim to live up to.

I share the details in this week's episode of The Manager Track so you can evaluate whether your standards are high in a good way or if they are simply unrealistic and create a discouraging environment for your team.

30 Mar 2021Uncovering Blindspots & The Johari Window00:20:11

In this episode, you'll learn how you can use the Johari Window as a tool to help you uncover blindspot and build better relationships with others and with yourself.

There are four panes or sections on the Johari Window:

  1. Open Area: This quadrant represents the actions, behaviors, and information that are known to you and those around them.
  2. Blindspot Area: Behaviors and tendencies in the blindspot area are known to others, but you are not aware of them. This could include hidden strengths or areas for improvement. Uncovering blindspots is a great starting point for development.
  3. Hidden Area: This information is known to you, but not known to anyone else. This could be feelings, ambitions, dreams, and opinions that you may withhold from others out of fear of negative reaction. When your trust strengthens, you might choose to reveal some of your hidden information.
  4. Unknown Area: This section includes information, skills, behaviors, etc. that are unknown to you and to others. This includes subconscious information that no one is aware of such as early childhood memories, undiscovered talents, hidden beliefs, etc.

The goal is to increase the size of the Open Area through discovery and uncovering blindspots and by sharing more information about you to reduce the hidden area.

In this episode, I'll learn 5 specific tools on how to do this.

In summary, the Johari window is a great tool for improving your self-awareness and, through it, your ability to work with others. It helps you understand the differences between how you see yourselves and how others see you.

26 Jan 2021The 3 Steps to Reach Your Next Career Goal in 202100:52:38

It's the perfect time to start thinking about pursuing that next goal in your career or to finally achieve a goal you may have been forced to put on hold last year.

But rather than talking about a few tactical steps, in this episode, we will cover exactly...

  • how to set up your action plan,
  • how to create new habits and behaviors that will get you the result you want, and
  • how to overcome the obstacles that you think are currently in the way or might be getting in the way down the road.

We're NOT talking about setting SMART goals or figuring out new years resolutions.

Instead, you'll get clear on why you want what you want and how to fuel your motivation with value-based goals and actions that are clear and aligned with what you actually desire.

Plus, we'll talk about what REALLY matters such as limiting beliefs, lack of accountability, or the self-doubt that is holding you back.

04 Jul 2023Re-Release: How to Deal With “Toxic” People at Work00:18:10

"Toxic" isn't just a buzzword, it's a very real way to describe behaviors and situations that are detrimental, both in and out of the workplace. This has been one of the most popular episodes of The Manager Track podcast. Since so many people have found it helpful, I thought I should share it again as a re-release. As more and more people begin to return to the office, this may even be a good one to share with a friend that may find it helpful.

___________________________________

The vast majority, let’s say 95% of people are good, caring people who have no intentions to hurt anyone. But then there are a few people who demonstrate behaviors that are hurtful towards others. They may be intentionally hurtful. They may intentionally push people’s buttons. Or exclude people and make them feel less than, or insecure.

Now I use quotation marks around the word “toxic” in this title because I strongly believe that there are no “toxic people”, but there are most certainly toxic behaviors or toxic dynamics, like toxic relationships.

And in my experience, it is inevitable that at some point in our careers, we find ourselves in a toxic situation or exposed to toxic behaviors.

And when you do, I want you to be equipped with tools to better handle the situation and with support to ensure you’re getting out of it with your confidence and wellbeing still intact.

For this reason, this podcast episode is about…

  • why taking charge when you’re exposed to toxic behaviors is crucial,
  • the 5 specific tips on how to deal with toxic behaviors, and
  • the negative lasting impact if you stay in toxic situations for too long (and why you might be sticking around too long).

If you’re currently dealing with a “toxic” person at work and it’s impacting your confidence or wellbeing, and you’re ready to get help and finally get a handle on it, then let’s talk. Schedule a call with me here: www.ramonashaw.com/apply

14 Jul 2020Unconscious Biases in The Workplace - An Interview00:37:59

Yes, I'm biased... and you are, too.

Ouch, I know!

Just like you, I wished that I could say I'm free of biases... be these biases on race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, or others.

But biases happen in a split-second. It's a brain process that identifies and categorized information in a way we're not consciously aware of.  Even when we say that we are very open-minded and not prejudiced, biases still creep upon us. Sadly, they're inevitable.

The good news is that having a bias doesn’t make you a bad person and not every bias is negative or hurtful. The problem arises when we don't recognize our biases which can then lead to bad or unjust decisions at work, in life, and in relationships overall.

And this is exactly why we need to examine our biases and be mindful of our hidden prejudices and the way they influence our actions and thoughts.

One way to do this is to listen to other people's stories - to empathize with them, learn from them, and expand your perspective by doing so.

This episode of The Manager Track is the last part of a 3-part interview series with powerful and courageous Black women.

Join me and Ericka in this honest and authentic conversation about biases, discrimination, and racism.

20 Jul 2021New Managers: Being "Productive" Means Something Different Now00:16:57

Do you ever end your day wondering where all the hours went? Your to-do list is longer than it was in the morning, and it feels you got nothing important accomplished.

If you can relate to this, then you're not alone.

As an IC (individual contributor) your main job was to get "stuff" done. Your performance was measured based on how much you accomplished and how fast you achieved your goals.

So that's what you used to define a "productive" day... it was all about scratching things off your to-do list.

But now that you're leading a team, the days can feel so "unproductive." All you do is helping others move their work along and solving their problems while also spending more time than you like sitting in meetings.

So by the end of the day, there is not much to show for all the work you did all day.

I remember when I felt this way. I started to doubt what I really contributed at work and I worried that my team members would see me as a lazy manager because I didn't produce much myself.

What I didn't realize during that time was that I had this whole thing upside down. I changed my role but never updated my definition of what a "productive" or successful day would now look like.

I was stuck in my old definition of what used to make me successful as an IC.

This is a challenge that many of my clients face because it is one of the numerous shifts new managers have to go through.

In this week's episode of The Manager Track podcast, I'll walk you through the 3-step process to sail through this transition and redefine what a "productive" day might now look like for you.

27 Sep 2022Quit The Quiet Quitting - And What You as a Manager Can Do For Your Team00:22:49

“Quiet Quitting” has been a buzzword for the last couple of months…and if you’re a little bit like me, you might even have started to cringe every time you hear the phrase now.

I’ve refrained from speaking about the topic so far because it seems to be broadly misconstrued and it aims to address a complex problem with an overly simple term or solution for that matter.

However, after sharing my thoughts with a reporter, I also decided to address the topic on the podcast.

So, in this week’s episode of The Manager Track podcast, I will share with you a little bit of its history in the workplace, why I personally dislike the term “Quiet Quitting”, the costs and risks associated with it, and my 3 suggestions for what you can do as a manager to address quiet quitting with your team members.

I hope this gives you a different and maybe new perspective on this latest hype of “Quiet Quitting.”

25 May 2021Busting 3 Myths of Leadership (for New Managers)00:14:16

A couple of years ago, I heard Melanie Perkins, 34-year old co-founder and CEO of Canva, say that she doesn’t think that the employees work for her but that she works for the employees.

It stuck with me because it highlighted one of the big myths so many of us have about what being a “leader” really means.

Today, I come across these kinds of misconceptions all the time and I see how they can misguide leaders and, especially, new managers.

In this week's podcast episode, I'm busting the following 3 specific myths that can get in the way of new managers' leadership growth:

  1. It's not just about leadership skills, but also about your leadership system
  2. It's not about excellence, but competence
  3. It's not about your style, but about their style
  4. Plus, you'll hear me talk about one more pitfall I see so many new managers fall into

14 Sep 2021Manage Your Mind Before You Manage People00:19:09

The responsibility of leading other people comes with the responsibility to lead yourself - and this is what we call Self-Leadership.

A big component of Self-Leadership is Mind Management and I believe that it is one of the greatest skills that you can learn to evolve your leadership. Plus, I see it as one of the most overlooked aspects of leadership development.

In this episode, you'll learn what it means to manage your mind and how this skill will benefit you and help you to evolve your leadership, your EQ, and your people skills to the next level.

29 Sep 2020"Can I Be Friends With My Direct Reports?"00:16:36

17 Aug 2021Stop Feeling Responsible For How Other People Feel00:18:53

I got a question for you... How do you feel when someone else is having a negative emotional reaction because of something you did or said?

If you feel guilty and responsible for how they feel then this episode is for YOU!

I often talk about emotional responsibility which means not to blame others for how we feel because our feelings are created by our own thoughts (not by other people or outside events!).

I know... this might be totally new to you and you might have a range of objections and questions pop up in your head right now. I get it!

Just stick with me.

Assume I'm right (and research from neuroscience to psychology is with me on this), then it's also true that you do not create other people's feelings.

But by the same token, you do not create other people’s thoughts.

Have you ever noticed, for example, that you can say something the exact same way to two different people and they both react differently? That’s because they are having different thoughts.

For many of us, the idea that we're responsible for our own feelings and that they are created by our own thoughts completely goes against the emotional model we adopted when we grew up.

But that old emotional model is incorrect. And not only that, but it is also at the root cause of people-pleasing and a range of ineffective leadership behaviors.

Think of sugarcoating feedback, avoiding tough conversations, saying no to requests, dishonest communication, and the list goes on.

When you take emotional responsibility for yourself but not for others, you are so much more present, more true to yourself, more effective and so much more compassionate with others.

Listen to this episode to see how this one shift in your thinking can unlock a whole new level of leadership effectiveness for you and change the way you show up in relationships at work and in your personal life.

04 Jan 2022The 3 Steps to Achieving Your Career Goals in 202200:22:24

As we're kicking off 2022, I thought it would be the perfect time to talk about goals and goal setting.

But don't you worry.. I'm not gonna go down the SMART goal lane and this is also not about New Year's resolutions.

Instead, in this week's episode of The Manager Track podcast I talk about the 3 biggest issues I see with goal setting and why so many of us lose steam along the way. Think about this... a meager 10% stick to New Year's resolutions for more than a couple of months.

Whether you're aiming for a promotion, want to exceed your annual goals, or are thinking about landing a new job, you'll walk away from this episode knowing what traps to avoid and how to set yourself up for success!

04 May 2021How Not To Micromanage00:31:44

"Please micromanage me!"... said NO employee, EVER!

Yet, 60-80% of employees (depending on the study) say that they've been micromanaged at least once in their professional lives.

The point is that there are a lot of "micromanagers" getting up this morning, making themselves a cup of coffee, and starting their workday. Yet, the vast majority of them don't realize that they are being perceived and described by others as micromanagers.

Yes, while you might honestly think that you must be hands-on with some (or all) employees, that they need your help, that your solutions are most often the best and it's your responsibility to share them, or that you're genuinely just a servant and caring leader trying to help your team as much as often as you can, your team may actually think you're micromanaging them.

I'm not trying to paint a gloom and doom scenario here but I want to make sure that you are aware of this blindspot so many managers are affected by.

In this episode, you'll learn the symptoms of micromanagers and tips to stop doing it, but you'll also discover the root causes of micromanaging. And that last part is what so often gets overlooked but is critical for you to understand if you're trying to change behavior.

16 May 2021Hiring Best Practices for Managers00:32:08

Interviewing isn't easy and with the added pressure to find the right match quickly, this process is a common challenge so many of my clients have.

And this is why I decided to bring to you an expert in Talent Acquisition and to discuss best practices for hiring managers.

Join me and Mark Langlie, a highly experienced Director of Talent Acquisition, in this week's episode of The Manager Track as we chat about...

  • The 3 best practices to prepare for the interview process and why success lies in the PREPARATION
  • How to work with an internal recruiter to get the best of them
  • How to manage the people involved in the interview process (including your senior leaders) and why this really matters
  • Why knowing your value proposition as a leader is key to win great candidates

And as a little bonus... I also threw in a question about what to do if you, personally, are interested in applying for an internal role and whether or not to share this information with your manager.

  • Dave and what he wished he knew on his first day on the job, and
  • Susan what parts of leadership were most unexpected to her.

I'm excited to share this conversation with you! If you're a new manager or even if you've been leading teams for a while, I promise you this episode will move you and will get you thinking!

10 Jan 2023How Managers Should Navigate Remote Work & IT Security - With Denis O'Shea00:36:45

This episode is a bit different than what you might be used to hearing. It's a conversation about how secure your team's passwords are and the risks associated with the sensitive employee and client information that used to live at the office, but has now become accessible from your employees' homes.

When the pandemic hit, most of us tried to figure out how to be able to work from home within a matter of days. Having the tech set up and being able to access work files and tools was way more important than data security... unless, of course, security is your jam ;-)

Well, that whole situation resulted in a 500% increase in cybercrime!

Since risk awareness and prevention is a key responsibility of a manager, I'm confident that you'll find this conversation with Denis O'Shea, the founder of Mobile Mentor, insightful.

Denis' company has just published the results of a study to understand the hybrid workforce, specifically remote workers coming out of the pandemic. Some of the findings were very surprising, and he shares them in this episode of The Manager Track podcast!

You'll learn some practical tips to help you avoid (or at least be prepared for) the nightmare of a cyber attack or data breach.

If you found this episode insightful, please do share it with the leadership in your organization's tech/ security department.

22 Sep 2020How to Become a Better Leader with DISC00:20:06

Do you work with someone who you just don’t get or who just doesn’t get you?

Each day, most of us wake up in the morning and interact with other humans – in our homes and in our work. We have our own personalities, preferences, and styles.

Some of us like to have as much information as possible before making a decision, while others prefer to go with their gut instinct and act fast to make quick progress.

Some of us are energized by socializing with people, while others love working on their own without distractions.

These are just a few of our individual differences in preferences and styles which influence who we collaborate well with and who we tend to have more difficulty with. And sometimes, these differences can get in the way of achieving results.

But it doesn't have to be this way.

By understanding the four main preferences and styles laid out in DISC and by starting to flex your style to better meet the preferences of those you interact with, you'll become a more effective communicator and a better leader overall.

- YOU'LL WALK AWAY KNOWING -

  • What the DISC assessment is and how it can help you as a leader
  • How to improve your leadership effectiveness with the help of DISC
  • How to communicate more effectively with the people you work with (including your boss)
  • And more!

28 Jun 2022Time Management is Pain Management00:12:56

Have you ever told yourself that “you just don’t have enough time?”

In this week’s episode of The Manager Track podcast, we’re going to talk about why time management is actually a lot more about pain management than task management.

I made this episode to help you:

  • Build awareness on how you spend your time and what you focus on
  • Own your decisions and make changes that align with your priorities
  • Follow through and execute on your decisions, even though doing so might feel uncomfortable.

A good number of my clients work on these topics and it's amazing to see what they can do when they get intentional with their time management! I hope you can apply these to your (work)life and truly take ownership of your decisions around how you spend your time!

22 Jun 2021Building Confidence00:26:10

Most of us aren't born with rock-solid, bulletproof confidence.

Instead, we have to build it, rebuild it, and protect it as we go through life and as we grow as humans and as leaders.

So, I'm curious.... where is your confidence level at today? Want to do a quick assessment with me?? 🤓

If so, answer the following questions...

  • What is your current confidence level on a scale from 1 to 10?
  • Where do you want your confidence level to be over the next 12 months?
  • What will having more confidence help you achieve? Why do you want to be more confident?
  • What's holding you back from building the confidence you wish to have?
  • What are you currently confident in? Think about your abilities and past achievements. What can you jump right in and do without hesitation and with pride?
  • What are you not confident in? What are you scared of doing? What makes you nervous just thinking about doing it?

Reflecting on these questions can get you the clarity you need to commit to building your confidence.

Because as much as I wished so, there is no magic pill. Instead, the practice of building and protecting your confidence is a bit like building muscles. What builds muscles is what keeps muscles.

In this week's episode of The Manager Track podcast, I'll share 2 strategies to help you build confidence, plus you'll learn the 4 ways are brains are wired to instill fear and doubts in us.

Lastly, I'll end the episode by sharing 3 specific tips on how you can help others, maybe people on your team, build their confidence.

05 Jan 2021Become a Strategic Thinker00:14:53

When we look at research about 96%. of leaders say they lack time for strategic thinking.

Even though most leaders know that they need to be more strategic to reach the next level in their career. Yet, they don't make the time.

They're too busy dealing with the day to day work.  But here's, what's so important. The higher up that you go in your career, the less you're going to be paid to scratch things off your to-do list and to just get stuff done and the more you will be paid for strategic thinking, for connecting dots for new initiatives, for creative thinking, and for making big plans that turn vision into execution.

In this episode, we're discussing what it means to be a strategic thinker and how to practice the skill.

And if elevating your leadership skills,  increasing your clarity, confidence, and competence as a leader in 2021 is one of your goals, then the Leadership Circle may be exactly what you've been looking for.  In a small group of experienced leaders, we tackle specific higher-level leadership topics every month through a blended approach of learning, coaching, accountability, support, and much, much more.

So to learn more, check out www.ramonashaw.com/leadership-circle. It's an amazing program for all the leaders who know that growing as a leader doesn't mean attending a one-off seminar, but it's an ongoing process. It's continued growth. It's like dimming the light day by day and make it a little bit brighter. Leadership is not a light switch that can get turned on in a one-day seminar and that's why the Leadership Circle was created.

I would love to hear from you and see if you are the right fit for the group and for this particular program. So visit www.ramonashaw.com/leadership-circle to learn more and schedule your free strategy call.

05 Mar 2024Better Listening - What It Actually Means00:26:00

Can you recall that last conversation you had with someone when you noticed they weren't fully present with you and giving you their fullest attention? Maybe they checked their phones every so often, maybe they were watching people walking by, or they were more interested telling you about their own experiences rather than trying to really hear and understand what you were trying to communicate.

How did you feel in that conversation? Chances are high that it seemed high-level, not very meaningful, or even a waste of time.

Listening well is a skill most of us have to learn as an adult and while it sounds easy enough, for many of us it is actually hard to do and filled with unconscious pitfalls.

Being a better listener can lead to significant positive outcomes for you, your team, and your organization. Not only does it demonstrate empathy and help to build trust but it also plays an important role in understanding various perspectives which can lead to making better, more informed decisions.

In this episode, Ramona will fill you in on the most common barriers to active listening, some of which you've probably not thought of before. She will also provide practical advice that will help you navigate challenging situations by fully engaging with the people involved and getting to the root cause of the issues at hand.

02 Nov 2021How to Create a Strategy for Your Team00:27:11

Get this... 96% of leaders say they lack the time for strategic thinking and 43% of managers cannot stat their own strategy (HBR).

That's crazy, right?!

As leaders, we MUST carve out time (i.e. ruthlessly prioritize) time to operate on a strategic level, to think about, discuss, plan, and then repeatedly communicate our strategies.

But let's be real. I know it's easier said than done to carve out time for "strategic stuff" in your packed schedule. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't or you can't.

Thousands of CEOs, founders, and execs do it EVERY SINGLE DAY and that means you can too.

But the importance of moving from being all transactional to stepping into a more transformational leadership arena is not all we're going to talk about here.  In fact, what I'm really sharing with you in this episode are...

  1. The 6 steps to develop a rock-solid 2022 strategy
  2. The 2 important considerations to make all along to ensure your strategy is set up to be successful
  3. The 4 most common challenges or reasons why strategies fail and how to prevent them

With this information in your pocket, you'll be ready to wow your team and your boss not only with a great 2022 strategy but also with an effective way to go about the entire endeavor.

02 Feb 2021Three Ways to Learn From Mistakes and Failure (and Not Get Knocked Down)00:14:34

Failures and mistakes...

We all make them. You might have bombed an interview, dropped the ball on a high-stake project, missed a deadline, wrote buggy code, you name it...

We're human and we are far from perfect.

BUT... we have a choice in how we respond to failures and mistakes. And that choice is what will drive your future actions.

Will you worry, always strive for perfection, procrastinate and try to stay safe OR will you go full in again, look for ways to be challenged, to see setbacks as setups, and take courageous actions no matter what?

If you're anything like me and you want to be bold, courageous, and confident in this world, then this episode is for you.

19 Jan 2021How to Have Difficult Conversations that Inspire and Motivate - An Interview with Aleta Maxwell00:24:06

08 Dec 2020Creating a Social Contract as a Team00:15:20

In this episode, we discuss the importance of a year-end review and reflection with your team and how to create a social contract as a team.

A social contract is a contract that your team agrees on that covers how you interact as a team and the desired behavioral norms that set your team up for its highest level of performance.

Here is a set of questions that you could use to discuss the social agreements with your team:

  • What expectations do team members have of each other?
  • What is working well within the team?
  • What is not working well?
  • What should the team keep doing, start doing, and stop doing?
  • What do we value?
  • What would make this team powerful?
  • What can we count on from one another?
  • How will we know we have achieved this?

If you want some help in facilitating a conversation like this for your team or if you are looking for other virtual events for your team, send me an email at contact@ramonashaw.com.
