09 May 2022Event MUA Nicole Aquilina talks about getting signed with an agent and moving into the commercial world.01:48:06

Send us a text

The Makeup Insider is a fortnightly podcast exploring the life and career of makeup artists, hosted by freelance mua Vanessa Barney. This week: getting personal with Nicole Aquilina, Melbourne events-based makeup artist.

Inspired by Australia’s Next Top Model, Nicole was drawn into the creativeness of the makeup, beauty and events world.

With 11 years’ experience across commercial, weddings and events - she’s sought after for her artistry expertise and is passionate about her clients and her work.

 KEY TAKEAWAYS:

SAY GOODBYE TO MIRRORS.

Makeup often looks bad, before it looks good - you know. While there’s no rules in makeup, it pays to have a happy client. That’s one rule that Nicole swears by, ‘don’t do your client’s make up in front of a mirror’.

With one of the biggest trends this season making a comeback is the winged eye-liner, mua’s know that this can often be a challenge. And having a client take a sneak peak before the final reveal, could be a real mood kill on set.

You have to be confident in making the brief work for your client - and keep final looks as just that.

SO TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT. WHAT YOU REALLY, REALLY WANT.

The big takeout here: Ask your clients what they want. Better yet, get them to show you.

When you work on a counter, like MAC (which Nicole coins was the gateway into makeup before social media), you get to practice on people from all walks of life. Different genders, skin tones, facial features - it teaches you what theory and school just can’t.

People often go to a makeup counter with pictures on their phone of looks they want to replicate, and you get to show them the products that match their skin to achieve that look. When you’re freelancing and you have a client that wants a certain look, the best way to get them to explain that ‘natural’ look they saw on instagram is to show you.

“It’s so important to ask your clients what they want. Like so many people say they want natural, but when you ask them to show you a photo of ‘natural’, it’s of Kimmy K.”

Nicole Aquilina

IT’S OK TO ASK FOR HELP.

After building up clientele over the years, Nicole wanted to make the switch away from weddings and move into more commercial work.

Her problem? She didn’t have the network. She knew that she wasn’t personally at that point in her career where she could easily do it, and needed to ask for help.

Nicole encourages mua’s to get the experience, build your networks and don’t take setbacks personally. It’s important to know that a ‘no’ right now, isn’t a ‘no’ forever - so just keep going and focus on self improvement.

“I find it really hard to let go of control. [But] sometimes you just need someone to hold your hand a little bit and help you out.”

Nicole Aquilina

25 Oct 2021Creating Your Path to Success: Julia Green on Building a Makeup Artist Career with Passion and Persistence.01:22:40

Send us a text

The Makeup Insider is a weekly one-on-one podcast exploring the life and career of makeup artists, hosted by freelance mua Vanessa Barney.

Integral to the success of any makeup artist is their ability to pivot styles to suit the brief. Makeup often needs to change to complement the client, the lighting, the photographer or the trend.

@Julia Green is thankful makeup has come such a long way. Inspired by an article in @Vogue when she was in year 8 of people doing makeup on models backstage in the Milan and Paris Fashion Shows, she was roused to “create”.

FUN FACT: Julia still has the Vogue article which set her on her path to becoming a makeup artist!

If you’re just starting out or have been in the industry for a long time, tune in now, check out the key takeaways and subscribe for future updates below.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

CREATE.

Makeup artists don’t just ‘do’, we ‘create’. Julia found her spark early on, putting her hand up to do makeup at every opportunity she could. The School Play? Yes, a perfect place to get hands on practice and an introduction to products. Through your course instructors? Yes, you’ll be surprised the good stead these connections will put you in, in years to come.

Beauty styles, special effects, period makeup, character makeup and development – get a good overview of everything, so that when it’s your time to create, you can show off that spark of yours!

“At the start (of my career) there wasn’t a lot of makeup available... think thick crayons, aqua colour, pan sticks and grease paints – these weren’t very inspiring when you love CREATING. Makeup has come such a long way, which is one of the most exciting things, with technology changes, you have to understand your formulas for makeup.”

Julia Green

Your work hours are all over the place and yes a 4am start is a very possible reality. Make sure you are reliable and consistent with your clients.

Don’t underestimate WOM.

From cold calling clients to the ole’ grapevine (now called the Googles!), word of mouth is critical and can make or break your career.

Julia employed the “go see” technique, calling up photographers and artists to get her foot in the door and show them her portfolio.

Building a solid, loyal client base takes time, patience and a little bit of savvy (wine optional!). Find artists and brands you want to be aligned with, be professional and show up.

Communication (is Queen!).

What happens when sh*t doesn’t go the right way? Communicate, communicate, communicate.

Exceptional customer service skills are extremely important; this means learning the hierarchy and when you can step in. It’s building your community and keeping their bookings (yes, that hangover is going to have to be fixed with a breaky burger & large Coke enroute to the booking).

This industry is crazy fun and crazy hours – and you’ll find communication does a lot more than just keep the lights on.

“I went from grooming footy players for retail ads to being a lead mua for Fashion Week. Communication is so important, realise your capabilities and advocate for yourself. You can grow y

01 Nov 2021From Paralegal to Red Carpet: Mia Connor on Building a Diverse Makeup Career and Mastering Content Creation.01:16:15

Send us a text

The Makeup Insider is a weekly one-on-one podcast exploring the life and career of makeup artists, hosted by freelance mua Vanessa Barney. This week: getting personal with Mia Connor, fashion and red carpet-style makeup artist.

For freelance makeup artists, content creation days are the new TFP’s (time for print). Mua’s often use this time to build their portfolio with work that shows their strengths, skills and diversity - ultimately helping them land the sort of work they want to be doing (and getting paid for!). Mua’s can also use this time to unleash their creativity and keep their work up-to-date.

Mia Connor, self-confessed quality control freak runs content creation masterclasses, born from many years of trial, training and transition.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

What does well.

Makeup artists need to stay abreast of trends, have an intuitive knowledge of colours, lighting, and style, fit the brief AND always have the end goal of making our clients look the absolute best. Easy, huh!

From juicy skin to dramatic eyes, Mia loves to mix up her style, while keeping synonymous with her brand and the environment.

2021 has seen the fresh no-makeup look remain a top favourite, alongside the ‘American’ glamour with heavy foundation, manicured brows, and deep contouring.

Wear different hats.

Having exposure to and training across, as many different areas of makeup as you can, ultimately will help build your portfolio and increase your scope of availability for jobs.

For Mia, training across multiple genres including glamour, editorial, fashion, lifestyle and special effects – to hairstyling, hair extensions, tanning and eyebrows (what can’t this woman do!), meant she could turn her side hustle into a career.

In the makeup industry, everything is pigeon holed. You can’t be seen to be the ‘jack of all trades’, you need to own one... or so we’ve been conditioned to think. Mia is happily an exception to the rule – and a great role model to other mua’s looking to switch specialities.

Shake up your career.

From paralegal to successful entrepreneur and well- regarded makeup artist. Mia’s career path is anything but ordinary.

Leaving a secure job to open your own business can be incredibly daunting, but ultimately if you’re happy to take the plunge and give it everything you’ve got – it can be very rewarding.

“It’s hard to start freelancing when you don’t know anyone in your city, so I hustled every hour I had outside of my 9-5, until I was busy enough to make the decision to do makeup full-time.”

24 Jan 2022Brissy MUA Gemma Elaine talks about curating your perfect kit and confidence building.01:17:27

Send us a text

This week: getting personal with @Gemma Elaine, one of Brisbane’s top mua’s who has been working in the industry for over 16 years.

PUT YOUR HANDS UP IF YOUR MAKEUP KIT CONTAINS… sounds like the start of a drinking game, right? But curating your kit is one of the key ingredients to success as a makeup artist. We got the low-down from Gemma on what she puts in her kit, the questions to ask ahead of time and what she really loves about her job.

Gemma says at the end of the day, we all just have to see each other as a community, as opposed to competition. So if you can help another artist out, you’re actually doing yourself a favour in the long run. One of the best things about being a mua is the people you get to meet and friendships that you form.

If you’re just starting out or have been in the industry for a long time, tune in now, check out the key takeaways and subscribe for future updates below.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

BUILDING CONFIDENCE.
When Gemma first started out as a mua, she had little confidence. ‘I felt like I could do the makeup, but then when a 16-year old tells you they hate what you’ve done, your confidence is crushed’. Her biggest struggle was trying to get people to like what she’d done – until she learnt the human element: how to interpret people and understand their end-goal (oh and a sh*t load of experience too).

“People would bring in a photo of Miranda Kerr, and say make me look like this… It took me years of experience and learning to read people to know that they don’t actually want to look like her – they want to feel as good as she looks. It’s tricky to break down what makeup translates to different people and understand what they actually want to look like. But once you have the experience, your confidence grows.”

Gemma Elaine

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.

As a mua, we look at every client/job as an opportunity to learn. Whether you’re working retail, have an agent or are freelancing. You need to practice, practice, practice until your skills are perfect (or damn near close!). Learning how to work on different skin types and eye shapes, across different ages and very different personalities too – is largely beneficial for your career. Learning in a team environment is always really good for education, because you can see how other people do things, pick up tips and ask questions along the way.

If you’re happy and kind to work with, everything flows better. Gemma is a big believer in putting positive vibes into the universe and getting them back. So, she always looks at things as an opportunity to learn. “I learnt how to do makeup on everyone. On kids, on models, on me. You just have to learn that whoever sits in front of you, you’re there to make them happy, to make them look beautiful.”

28 Mar 2022Mr Maybelline for 10 years, countless fashion weeks & celebrities, Nigel Stanislaus has done it all.02:08:18

Send us a text

This week: getting personal with Nigel Stanislaus, a Singaporean-Chinese hair and makeup artist living in Melbourne whose celebrity client list spans Bella and Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner , John Legend , Jenna Dewan, Tina Arena, Troye Sivan, Olivia Newton John, Peaches Geldoff, Ruby Rose and Michael Bublé.

Born and raised by strong, resilient women, Nigel was compelled into the artistry life by the glamour, the strength, the flexibility and the attitude on how to survive, and how to thrive!

With an impressive repertoire of clients, industry experience and portfolio of work:

Editorials include L’Officiel , Harpers Bazaar, Elle, & Marie Claire. Former Mr Maybelline and  Asia’s Next Top Model Judge. NYC resident and makeup director to almost 200 shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.

Whether you’re just starting out or have been in the industry for a long time, tune in now, check out the key takeaways and subscribe for future podcasts below.

 KEY TAKEAWAYS:

SET YOURSELF A GOAL

Whether you’re working to pay bills, unleashing your creativity or aiming to be top dog - it’s important to set yourself a goal.

Nigel believes that if you manifest things, life will take you there. Sure there’s bound to be a few u-turns and bends in the road - but you will eventually get to your destination.

Not sure where to start? For Nigel, it was the fear of failure that always pushed him to have a plan, show up, be present and be the absolute best that he could be. Start by writing out your goals for the next week, month or year ahead - and see where it takes you.

LOVE WHAT YOU DO

Artists love to be inspired by the world around them. Nigel is passionate about his work and enthuses that, ‘makeup should make you feel something, it should give you emotional energy - like you’ve been dancing for hours’.

Our industry is tough, you need passion, skill and a whole lot of tenacity and grit to make it. Nigel (aka Mr Maybelline) always dons a big smile and love of learning.

Inspired by boots he saw in Rome or flicking through instagram, Nigel’s life goal is to teach kids who want to do makeup to know that it’s a beauty blender. Whatever you’re feeling - angry, sad, scared, hungry, excited - just paint it out. Use your passion, use your emotion to give your work substance and you’ll always love what you do.

“When people say, ‘oh, the glam is here’ to me, it’s not really like that. It's deeper, more personal... It’s business for me, it’s my career, it’s my identity - it is so much more than just magnetic lashes or painting someone..”

Nigel Stanislaus

 GIVING BACK (TO ARTISTS)

Taking kids off the street as his assistant, Nigel boasts that the hard work and commitment from those who assisted him out of High School, are the ones to watch out for in the industry today. These kids are now directors, artists in demand, entrepreneurs of up and coming brands… Giving back to the community and having young artists coming up the ranks around you is so important.

21 Jun 2022Instagram & Tik Tok content creator Claire Bridgett shares her story.01:34:33

Send us a text

This week: getting personal with Claire Bridgett, makeup artist and content creator.

Inspired by beauty YouTube videos, Claire’s confidence in her natural makeup abilities sprouted early in her life. From doing friends' makeup to working at Mecca - she explains how her career unfolded.

Whether you’re just starting out or have been in the industry for a long time, tune in now, check out the key takeaways and subscribe for future podcasts below.

 KEY TAKEAWAYS:

TIKTOK: NO ONE WANTS PERFECT.

Claire gives us the lowdown on how to get high performing content on TikTok.

1. Make it quick - 15 seconds is what TikTok values, but it’s been proven that 7 seconds is really the sweet spot.

2. Use ‘trending’ soundtracks - if you use a song or sound that is popular, the algorithm recognises that and will increase the ranking of your post.

3. Create punchy one-liners (aka clickbait) - using words that grabs your audience's attention, to really draw them in to your content, and want to find out more.

People want to see you be authentic, like you’re talking to your friends. If you’re not educational or entertaining, you just won’t make the cut.

Scroll through your favourite TikTok accounts and take note of what they do well and what generates high engagement (likes, views and comments).

#1 RULE: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE CUSTOMER.

You know that saying, ‘the customer is always right’? Well, nothing rings more true when working in the makeup industry.

Claire confides she has a TikTok for artists looking to break into the industry (and work for Mecca), with her hot tip, to: focus on your customer.

“Yes, you need to be talented… but it’s not actually about your artistry skills. It’s really customers, customers come first, no matter what.”

Claire Bridgett

YES: KNOCKBACKS ARE HARD.

Chumbawamba sang it perfectly, when they said, “I get knocked down, but I get up again, you’re never gonna keep me down.”

In the minute of the rejection, it can, understandably, feel like the worst moment of your life. Claire said she felt like giving up many times in her career, but knew she wouldn’t be happy until she landed that next position.

In our world, as an artist, you’ll be exposed to many type

Send us a text

The Makeup Insider is a weekly one-on-one podcast exploring the life and career of makeup artists, hosted by freelance mua Vanessa Barney. This week: getting personal with Ellie Zuker, makeup artist, hairstylist and life-long learner.

Learning is incredibly important. No matter what industry you’re in. The thing about learning is, while you may not take everything in – you take onboard the information you think is important and you go on to develop your own ideas, style and success based on what you’ve learnt.

You should never stop learning. Whether it’s a course, a masterclass or assisting – so long as you’re learning something new. Ellie is a life-long learner. She loves assisting (both paid and unpaid jobs), which has helped refine her technical skills, grow her industry connections, and nail the art of being on set.

And a little reminder from Ellie when it comes to self-doubt, ‘you need to stop comparing yourself to others… just because you’re not booked out every weekend, doesn’t mean you’re not successful. Take a step back and look at all the amazing things you have done or achieved.’

25 Apr 2022Carla Dyson shares how she build her bridal and commercial client base.01:32:58

Send us a text

This week: getting personal with Carla Dyson, commercial and bridal international hair and makeup artist.

If you follow Carla, you can see she’s always been a creative person. Her social media profile presents her career highlights, industry secrets, behind the scenes footage and how-to’s. Her top tip: work on speed. It’s important for clients and will generate higher ROI for you in the long run.

Carla is a woman of many talents. In lockdown she launched her own business, The Creative Directory - a community of creatives to help other artists take their careers to the next level. She also kept a little bit of herself [C.D] within the brand, passionate that the business is built as an extension of her values.

Whether you’re just starting out or have been in the industry for a long time, tune in now, check out the key takeaways and subscribe for future podcasts below.

 KEY TAKEAWAYS:

 THE [NOT SO] GLAMOROUS LIFE

Are you a workaholic? Reading this, are you also thinking about the 101 things you need to do to prepare for tomorrow’s shoot… your kit, the brushes, the client brief? Don’t worry. You’re not alone.

Carla admits she’s always been a workaholic, always hustling and working as much as she could every opportunity she got.

Our industry, though, is not always as glamorous as it’s made out to be. It’s actually quite a taxing job on your body. For one shoot, there might be 12 - 15 different shots, at different locations in one day. And that means changes for hair, makeup, decor, etc. which means you’re likely standing in heels for 8 - 10 hours a day!

Carla understands the impact on your body, but boasts, “I love it. That’s why we do it. It might be taxing, but damn it feels good when you sit back and see what you’ve created. What you’ve been a part of.”

THE INSTAGRAM BUSINESS

Are you really reaching your key target market if you’re not using reels?

Instagram, like many other social media platforms, constantly evolves. The algorithms change and there are new ‘best practice’ guidelines more often than we would like. But did you know that reels for instagram not only have incredible reach, they’re also more time-effective for YOU as an artist.

We’re all time-poor these days, so we got Carla to explain how she creates while she works… You no longer have that 5-minute window at the end of the shoot to take perfect still shots, she said, instead, just hold your phone up and film as you do it. This filming can be used for reels, with the footage being much more authentic and real - exactly what your audience is craving.

“Reels are raw. Using apps like Facetune set the wrong beauty standards, it’s not right. We need to make sure we’re posting stuff that is real.”

Carla Dyson

THE ASSISTANT CHECKLIST

If you’ve got the time, do it. If you don’t have the time, make the time - or consider if this really is the right career for you.

A common theme weaved through each podcast is assisting. It’s

29 Nov 2021Bookkeeping with Bec “Bookkeeping is more than just tracking finances; it’s making sure your business is running a profit!00:44:10

Send us a text

This week: getting personal with Rebecca Buchanan, owner of straight up bookkeeping – a virtual bookkeeping service which helps small businesses understand and track their sales, income and expenses to make better business decisions.

If your side hustle has grown into a fully fledged business, or you’re just about to launch your business – you need to manage your finances. Bookkeeping is at the centre of that, and something Bec encourages all listeners to do.

“Bookkeeping is more than just tracking finances; it’s making sure your business is running a profit! “Bookkeeping is more than just tracking finances; it’s making sure your business is running a profit! ”

So, at what point financially does work crossover from a hobby/side hustle to a business? Tune in now to find out!

If your side hustle has grown into a fully fledged business, or you’re just about to launch your business – you need to manage your finances. Bookkeeping is at the centre of that, and something Bec encourages all listeners to do.

“Bookkeeping is more than just tracking finances; it’s making sure your business is running a profit!”So, at what point financially does work crossover from a hobby/side hustle to a business? Tune in now to find out!

If you’re just starting out or have been in the industry for a long time, take a listen, check out the key takeaways and subscribe for future updates below.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

BOOKKEEPING 101.

As makeup artists, we hustle. Hard. Whether it’s doing casual work on weekends, outside our M-F jobs; early morning shoots, late night testing, we cram as much work and experience in as we can to build our skills and portfolio.

In terms of bookkeeping, when you start to make a bit of money (over $18,500 to be exact) and are consistently booking clients and gigs you are running a business. Hey, it may be incidental (congrats btw!), but now you NEED to track your finances.

Bec is a Xero enthusiast. Xero is a bookkeeping tool that links to your business bank account* and extracts all of your financial information into the system – to make it easy for you to see your P&L (profit and loss).

If you only do one thing today – SET UP A BUSINESS BANK ACCOUNT NOW. Treat your business bank account with respect, with the end goal of making a profit. Plus, it will make it 1,000 times easier than having to sift through all your late night maccy d runs.

As a Xero partner, you can contact Bec to activate a $10 monthly subscription. While this subscription doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, it provides the basic financial tracking you need for a business.

BONUS TIP: You can access Hubdoc through your Xero account. It’s a digital “hub” that stores all of your documents/invoices and migrates the key data (transactional information) to your Xero account. Think of Hubdoc as your digital shoebox system for storing receipts, pretty nifty actually!

“For the sake of $10 a month, I would use X

10 Jan 2022Sue McLaurin, Brisbane makeup artist and business coach with over 20 years’ experience, gives some great advice!00:58:46

Send us a text

This week: getting personal with Sue McLaurin, Brisbane makeup artist and educator with over 20 years’ experience.

Ever wanted to change careers, but thought… I’m too old to start over? Not for Sue McLaurin! Sue was working in the travel industry in Europe for most of her twenties, travelling and loving the feel-good freedom that the lifestyle brought. It was only when she returned to Australia working in a corporate job that she had the yearning to be back working with people, in a fun, creative way.

In an age where social media is critical to building and maintaining your networks, Sue talks us through how networking was key to her success as a freelance mua – and how the skills can still be applied to artists now.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

NETWORK.

As a freelance mua, you’re running your own business and should treat it as such.

Sue’s top tip is to network. Get on the phone (hit the socials) and organise face-to-face catch ups.You will get knock backs, but the ones you land, and do well, will be the ones to further establish your business and build your networks.

A lot of people don’t see being a mua as a legitimate job, more like a ‘hobby’. So, the knock backs, they can be hurtful. And we fully understand it can be tough. But that’s what you have to use as fuel to keep you going. When you land a job or have a client that is REALLY HAPPY with your work – you know, and you get that good ole’ pat on the back kinda-feeling, that this is what it is all for!

Networking to meet other artists is just as important, something TMI aims to achieve. We want to build our community of artists, so that everyone has someone to lean on, learn from and grow with. If you’re interested in assisting, you can pop your details down here.

“I got so many no’s, so many knock backs. In the first year I did five weddings… but then in the second year I did 56, and the third and fourth years I did over 150 each of those years.”

Sue McLaurin

FIND YOUR NICHE.

Something Sue really impresses on her students is to find your niche. In an oversaturated industry, you need to find your niche, your ideal clients, your own style and way of doing things.

What sets you apart as an artist? Think about your style, what would someone say about you when recommending you to a future client?

Sue suggests working to a two-year timeline. ‘It takes about two years to establish yourself’, and while it’s not all bright lights, if it’s your dream and you’ve set clear goals to achieve – then you’re going to work your hardest to get to that point.

You can be the most talented makeup artist in town, but if nobody knows about you, you’re not going to get booked. Keep your networks up-to-date, keep your skills up-to-date and stay true to yourself.

SHAPING SUCCESS.

What not to do? Don’t focus purely on the makeup, to the detriment of relationships. Half of what is going to get you booked for that next job or next client, is collaborating with other artists and being part of a community.

25 Sep 2023Kerrie Stanley: Exploring Vulnerability in the Creative Industry as a Multifaceted Artist – Makeup, Hairdresser, Wigs, Millinery, and Product Creator.01:15:40

Send us a text

The Makeup Insider is a fortnightly podcast exploring the life and career of makeup artists, hosted by freelance MUA Vanessa Barney. "Meet Kerrie Stanley: The Multifaceted Creative Extraordinaire – Makeup Magician, Hair Guru, Wig Wizard, Millinery Maven, and Innovative Creator.

Key Takeaways:

Tackling Creative Butterflies: Kerrie's here to remind us that no matter where we stand on our creative journey, those nagging anxieties and self-doubts are universal. Yet, with experience, we get better at taming them. So, for all you budding and starry-eyed creators out there, remember to toughen up and not let criticism hit too close to home. Easier said than done, but it's the key to keep pushing ahead.

Crafting Your Creative Crew: One of Kerrie's most treasured nuggets of wisdom is the importance of choosing your creative companions wisely. Being surrounded by inspiring and supportive souls can ignite the flames of our creativity and propel us to greater heights. Don't be shy about showing your vulnerable side and reaching out when you need a hand. Together, we can conquer hurdles and evolve as artists.

Creating Emotional Connections: Kerrie's parting thoughts struck a deep chord with me. She stressed that, in the grand scheme of things, it's not just about the art we craft; it's about the emotions we evoke and the impact we have on people. As creators, we possess the enchanting ability to stir emotions and touch lives through our work. So, let's strive to make a positive difference and etch our mark in the hearts of our audience."

03 Jul 2023How to  Assist in the Makeup Industry: Tips and Tricks with Emma Chaisty & May Vl.01:41:49

Send us a text

In this episode of "The Makeup Insider," host Vanessa Barney is joined by makeup artists Emma and May to discuss all things assisting in the industry.

We discuss the dos and don'ts of assisting, the importance of being a support system for your mentor, and the rewards of pursuing a career in makeup.

Here are my top three takeaways from this episode:

  • Read the room: As an assistant, it's important to be aware of your surroundings and the vibe on set. Don't go in with a preconceived notion of what you should be doing. Instead, take cues from your mentor and be open to adapting to their needs.
  • Be a support system: Being a creative can be mentally and physically exhausting. As an assistant, it's your job to be a source of support for your mentor. This means being positive, low maintenance, and offering help wherever you can.
  • Pursue your passion: Makeup and hair is a rewarding career, but it's also tough. If you're thinking about pursuing a career in this field, give it a go, but also have a backup plan. Stay in your own lane and don't compare yourself to others. Remember, there's a client for everyone.

I hope you all enjoy this episode as much as I did. Don't forget to rate and subscribe to The Makeup Insider podcast so you never miss an episode. Thanks for listening!

28 Feb 2022Australian Makeup Artist of the Year Ava Belle talks Lux Bridal and more.01:34:47

Send us a text

This week: getting personal with Ava Belle, Australian makeup artist of the year.

From face painting at children’s parties in Dubai, to glamour studios in London and nightclub body painting in Soho, Ava is a Byron-born Aussie creative star! With over 15 years’ experience, Ava’s makeup journey started when she was just a little girl watching her mum face paint at School fates.

Are you interested in performing arts, bridal makeup, assisting, editorial shoots, fashion week and runways, creating headshots, glamour shoots, freelancing or working across diverse client portfolios? Then Ava’s story is for you!

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

HUSTLE

Did you know Ava booked her first gig before she’d even bought her first kit?! How’s that for hustlin’.

Ava’s skills grew exponentially when she started assisting and travelling back and forth from Sydney to London, working on high profile jobs….

Attributing her success to constantly learning, being in the right (positive, educational) environments and putting herself out there, Ava encourages mua’s to create opportunities, have persistence, leverage your networks and just show up ready to go.

ADAPT

It’s been a hell-of-a-year, again. And for our industry, this couldn’t ring truer! If the past two years have taught us anything, it’s to be agile and savvy enough to adapt.

Ava pivoted from bridal to content, recognising the need to ‘adapt’ to the market around her. But also talked to us about an expensive lesson she learnt early in her career about trying to launch a product and business model in another country without doing her research.

“It’s been interesting times and I think that adapting has been the keyword over the last two years… My predominant business (pre-covid-19) was bridal, which had to take a backseat while I focused on producing lots of content during lockdowns and restrictions.

Through this time I also won Australian Makeup Artist of the Year, it was a nice surprise and a lovely title to hold.”

Ava Belle

COLLAB

You will have clients with different nationalities, different nuances, from all around the world. The important challenge is finding that common middle-ground, making your client on your seat feel comfortable and making sure you kick a$$ with your work.

While some collaborations happen organically through your networks, or from your business listings online - there are important steps you can take to assist this process.

 1. Build your portfolio, always be open to creating new content from your existing bookings or through new opportunities
 2. Don’t be afraid to have sponsored brand collaborations
 3. Know your worth - make sure your costs are covered if you have to travel, stay the night, etc.
 4. Be the best version of you. Show up, do the best work you possibly can and network with those around you.

I’ve always been business minded and entrepreneurial… when I realised I could run my business on my phone from anywhere in the world, it just gave me this freedom to go travel, explore (and work).

04 Jul 2022From Bedroom Studio to Global Glam: Serena Wyllie’s Journey to Becoming the ‘Queen of Glow’.01:34:16

Send us a text

The Makeup Insider is a weekly one-on-one podcast exploring the life and career of makeup artists, hosted by freelance mua Vanessa Barney. This week: getting personal with Serena Wyllie, makeup artist, Sydney-sider and ‘Queen of Glow’.

Growing up in a small country town, Serena established her business from her bedroom-turned-studio at the age of 16. From watching Chloe Morello on YouTube to travelling to the UK to complete a hair and makeup course. From completing Mia Connor’s mua masterclass, to Shannon William’s hair masterclass. And working her a$$ off travelling to remote locations in far North Queensland for gigs in between.

Whether you’re just starting out or have been in the industry for a long time, tune in now, check out Serena’s key takeaways and subscribe for future podcasts below.

 KEY TAKEAWAYS:

 BEING A SELF-STARTER.

Replacing her bed with a lounge in her bedroom-turned-studio at the age of 16, Serena charged $30pp for makeup appointments. Using makeup from Woolworths and a purple eyeshadow palette (which she somehow made to work for everyone), she didn’t let her location stop her from turning her passion into a career.

Using her full-time job to fund higher-end products for her Kit, Serena began working on bridal clients during her weekends - with one wedding leading to another. Building her portfolio of clients and work, she officially launched her career as a full-time mua on her 18th birthday.

A lot of perseverance in the face of rejection and setbacks, and a whole lot of initiative is what you need as an artist to make it.

“I took a leap of faith and I never looked back.”
Serena Wyllie

 HOW DIFFERENT STYLES FIT.

Not every brief is going to be the same, nor every client you work with. Understanding how to make a style work for you and how styles can be universally different across countries, is super important.

For Serena, she completed her mua course in the UK in London. Where blow drys, ‘no-makeup’ makeup and red lips were the beauty standard. Fast forward to her time back in Australia, she quickly learnt that beachy waves (that ‘undone’ look) and bronzed cheeks were what everyone wanted.

“That’s the thing with the industry. It’s like, you can never stop learning. Education is the best investment, try every six months to learn something new.”
Serena Wyllie

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS.

What are some of your highlights as an artist? Is it your favourite gig, your biggest client, your first real break?

Serena’s includes a wedding she worked on in Beirut, Lebanon. With her mum born there, it was really special to be flown over by her client for their incredible wedding, where she got to spend time meeting family and cousins, some of which for the first time.

She also proudly states that working with Zoe Foster Blake at the age of 20

18 Jul 2022Automation QUEEN Charlotte Isaac explains how to get back 4 hours a week, through Dubsado.00:31:45

Send us a text

The Makeup Insider is a weekly one-on-one podcast exploring the life and career of makeup artists, hosted by freelance mua Vanessa Barney. This week we take a look at a different type of artist, Automation-Queen, Charlotte Isaac.

Organised, tick. Talented, tick. Super friendly, tick. Meet Charlotte. An all-round organisational bada$$ who works with creative business owners to streamline their client communications.

She talks us through why she’s obsessed with a tool called Dubsado (and she’s mildly confident you will be too!) that helps your business stay in motion.

Charlotte also provides an overview of Business tools available on her website, to help your business succeed.

Whether you’re just starting out or have been in the industry for a long time, tune in now, check out the key takeaways and subscribe for future podcasts below.

 KEY TAKEAWAYS:

 What Is Automation?

It’s cloning what you would normally do, without you having to do it.

Let’s walk through an example for a bridal mua:

  1. Someone comes to talk to you about doing their wedding makeup
  2. You’ve got to make sure the date, time and location are organised
  3. You probably have to sort out some sort of contract, including requesting a deposit
  4. You might want to send them some information on how to get ready
  5. You might want to send the bride some skin care tips in the lead up to the wedding, and
  6. You might want to send them a reminder a week before the wedding.

There’s A LOT of information and organising that goes into a job, and while it’s different for everyone, what is clear is that automating those 6 steps above makes your job (and life) a whole lot simpler!

One of the biggest time sucks for mua’s is responding to emails. Most of the time new clients are messaging on a weekend, when they’re free - but you’re likely at a wedding or have just worked for 8 hours and you’re exhausted, and don’t want to check your emails and craft a reply.

Imagine having that all set up to automatically respond in your tone of voice, for you - without you having to lift a finger!?

 Why Dubsado?

Dubsado helps your business stay in motion. You can build relationships, schedule appointments and streamline your projects from start to finish.

Plus, it’s especially good for mua’s because:
1. It connects with Xero and QuickBooks (Accounting), Paypal, Square and Stripe (Payments), video conferencing apps, email providers and calendar apps.
2. You can try it for free for up to 3 clients - indefinitely! Yes, no lifetime payment needed.
3. You can request a client review a certain number of days after you finish working with them. Automating those pesky Google reviews and recommendations you hate asking for, but let's be honest, really need!

Ps. Yes, we totally acknowledge it’s an usual name. Fun fact: it’s run by a husband and wife, whose son used to run around their house goin

01 Aug 2022Model Jess Rae King, gives insight and tips from the other side of the makeup chair.00:31:54

Send us a text

This week we take a look at a different type of artist in our industry and  get personal with Aussie curve model, Jess Rae King.

In the industry for over 15 years, Jess is a curve model (aka plus size model) whose size 10/12 body challenged the ‘cookie cutter’ description of what a ‘standard’ model was, and has taken the modelling world by storm after winning a Melbourne Spring Fashion week modelling competition while at uni. Attributing her success to agent, Chelsea Bonner, Jess is a body-positive, confidence-building, mental health crusader.

Just earlier this year, Jess participated in the first ever, Curve Edit at Australian Fashion Week.  The event was the first runway of its kind, a dedicated show for models and fashion over an Australian size 10.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

A DAY IN THE LIFE.

What was traditionally a juggle between being on set four to five days per week, plus content creation, plus media opportunities - has now transformed, thanks to the implementation and growth of social media, to a more balanced workload.

With an agent for modeling and an agent for social media, Jess’ days, although chaotic, and different week-to-week, are manageable.

“This week, I’m shooting here in Melbourne, but next week I’m shooting interstate. Last week was Fashion Week, so my feet really haven’t touched the ground. This job is ever changing. No two weeks are the same. That’s what’s drawn me to this industry, to this job. It’s so varied and always exciting.”
Jess Rae King

USING YOUR VOICE, FOR GOOD.

Modeling traditionally, is kind of like being a mannequin. Being told what to do, how to do it and not speaking out.

However, as the world changes, so too does the audience. What audiences really crave is authentic content, a moral-compass type of idol, and a platform where they can follow along.

What attracted Jess to the industry was the idea of being in front of the camera and using that platform, for good.

“I was really early on to the adoption of Instagram so I you know spent a lot of my time talking about my history of body image and mental health and disordered eating and at the time that was really kind of like lapped up by the Internet, the world. I think people were really craving seeing some sort of authenticity and you know different body types and stories that they could relate to.”
Jess Rae King

TIPS FOR MUA’S.

Ever wanted to know what a model’s really thinking during your hair and makeup session? Jess tells us what she loves when she’s in the chair.

1. When the mua takes their time with skin prep.
 2. Getting to see and use new products.
 3. Learning about new techniques and styles.

Jess’s tip for models? Be present when you’re in the makeup chair. Try not to be on your phone, as it’s a wonderful time to learn, and to pick up new skills.

23 May 2022Geelong MUA Tess Holmes takes us through her path to success while juggling family life.01:23:40

Send us a text

This week: getting personal with Tess Homles, hair and makeup artist, mother and masterclass host.

Tess is responsible for the makeup on the cover shoot of ‘Then there was her’, Sophie Cachia’s biography, which just dropped last month and the many-a celeb glow-ups, including Sophie Monk and Jessica Gomes

“You know, it never really gets easier taking photos of yourself for videos, or listening to your own voice for that matter” - remarks Tess.

Encouraging mua’s unsure what to charge when starting out, Tess suggests starting at a base of AU$150 for an hour’s work. Once you work out your market, brand and followers - you can start to increase your price. You just have to gauge what’s right for you and start off somewhere.

Whether you’re just starting out or have been in the industry for a long time, tune in now, check out the key takeaways and subscribe for future podcasts below.

 KEY TAKEAWAYS:

TRIAL AND ERROR.

Makeup is art. It’s your own art, on a living canvas.

Nothing is perfect until you practice - and as Tess says, nothing is wrong (I mean there’s not hitting the client brief - which is entirely a different story), but otherwise the best part about makeup is that you can really make your own look, because there’s no real right or wrong, it’s all about personal style.

“It was all trial and error [in the early days]. It is all literally practice. You do something, then you rub it off. You know you can start again, and that is the best part about makeup.”
Tess Holmes

MAP TO SUCCESS.

Didn’t meatloaf say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions? Well, along those lines are also striving make up artists hoping to make it in the big bad world.

Tess mapped her way to success by creating a clear path of what she wanted, what she needed to do, and how to get there. Launching her self-titled makeup masterclass, Tess educates people on how to do their own makeup.

Sponsored by Mecca and selling out EVERY TIME within minutes, Tess’ makeup classes are drawing people from all over Australia.

While a masterclass requires a lot of work, it is very rewarding. You get to put your skills to good work by teaching a new generation of artists - you just need to find your niche.

“I did my research and there was nothing out there [at the time]. There wasn’t anything for just your everyday person to learn makeup… So that’s where I started. I drew a map of what I wanted to create.”
Tess Holmes

06 Jun 2022Cruelty free and environmentally conscious Melbourne based bridal MUA Kate McCleary shares her story.01:41:06

Send us a text

This week: getting personal with Kate McCleary, a cruelty free and environmentally conscious, hair and makeup artist.

Based in Melbourne, Kate understands the life of a mua is anything but straight and narrow. She starts off by telling us about a photo on her studio wall that is over nine years old and still one of her collection favs, boasting the importance of authentic collaborations, and why now is the time to ditch kits tested on animals and proudly join the cruelty-free artist community.

Whether you’re just starting out or have been in the industry for a long time, tune in now, check out the key takeaways and subscribe for future podcasts below.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

CRUELTY FREE.

If you don’t already check the fine print on your products, today is the day you start.

I want to be clear on the definitions, as it can be tricky to navigate the cosmetic industry when trying to be cruelty free (and vegan!).

Cruelty free means that the product was developed without any tests on animals. Whereas Vegan means that the product does not include any animal-derived ingredients.

Making a conscious effort to choose cruelty free products from early in her career, and as an avid vegan enthusiast, Kate understands how challenging it can be. Having an open mind, doing your research and supporting a brand whose ethos is the same as yours is key.

Kate’s go-to research hub is crueltyfreekitty.com, an American site with a large database of cruelty-free cosmetics.

Her fav brands include: Illamasqua, Charlotte Tilbury, Hourglass, Chantecaille, RMS, Kevyn Aucoin, plus more.

“Over the years I’ve waved goodbye to some of my most beloved brands. Many have been bought out by larger non-cruelty free cosmetic houses and even more have started selling in China where animal testing is mandatory. However, as a vegan, I believe we can live our life without harming others, so that is exactly what I do. Plus, our industry is rapidly changing, so you have to be on top of it to truly be able to service your clients.”
Kate McCleary

 DESIGNING A LOOK.

As artists, we crave that creative flair in our work. Whether it’s testing a new kit or being given free reigns on a shoot.

Consulting a new client is quite similar to the service space of tailoring. Kate  thrives in creative opportunities where she gets to design a look. With her bridal work, she can be quite creative - often working with pops of colour.

It can be rare in our industry to bring the whole look to life - the hair, makeup, clothes and styling, something she loves being part of.

“When you look after the bride's hair and makeup, you get that really cohesive look and you’re able to look after them for the whole day” says Kate.

Her  recommendation for those

11 Apr 2022Pinky aka Nicole Thompson, makeup artist, author & mum shares her 20 year career journey.01:49:09

Send us a text

The Makeup Insider is a fortnightly podcast exploring the life and career of makeup artists, hosted by freelance mua Vanessa Barney. This week: getting personal with Pinkiiieee (aka Nicole Thompson), makeup artist, author and mum.

With an eclectic career spanning 20 years, Pinky thrives on new challenges and has said yes to working all types of jobs from magazine, editorials and advertising, to body painting, celebrities and weddings. Challenged by the covid pandemic, she reassessed her work-life balance after child number two, and launched into freelancing.

Whether you’re just starting out or have been in the industry for a long time, tune in now, check out the key takeaways and subscribe for future podcasts below.

 KEY TAKEAWAYS:

SLIDING DOORS MOMENT.

From interior decorator, merchandiser and singer to rockstar mua, Pinkiiieee was inspired by her love of drawing and painting and a casual conversation with her boyfriend (now husband of 20+ years) who suggested she bring her passions in artistry to life.

As an impulsive go-getter, after a brief stint of industry recon, Pinky enrolled in makeup college. Nearly quitting halfway through the first year after feeling like she just wasn’t getting it right, Pinkiiieee encourages artists to stick with it, especially when things seem tough - because that’s when your sliding doors moment often happens.

“My first thought was (that) I loved all the glitter and shiny things. I loved the idea of special effects and doing movies… (but) I loved the pretty side too, the glamour of it all and making people feel really good…. I just became obsessed. I’m glad I stuck with it.

Pinky

WHAT IS MEDIA TRAINING?

With the increase in reliance on social media to elevate your artist profile, strengthen and widen your industry and client networks and basically act as a platform to land you consistent work - media training might be something to consider.

Pinky first completed media training in New York, revelling that it was ‘quite intense’, but acknowledging the importance of understanding each platform from a PR lens, how to answer difficult questions, how to talk about a ‘product’ in the most interesting way and how to be consistent, concise and calm under pressure.

Visual cues such as facial expressions, often tell a greater story than your words. When you’re active on social media, in front of the camera or talking about your product you need to be cognisant of all elements.

“The first time I watched myself back I was mortified. It was in a room full of people… and I thought I was bright and bubbly, but my facial expressions made me look like a cranky b*tch!. It’s about the energy you bring when you say something that really changes what you’re saying.”

Pinky

 BE IN THE MOMENT.

Have you ever watched a Fashion Week reel on instagram and thought, ‘Wow - there are some crazy styles right now!?’. Part of the amazing culture of our industry is being in the moment, being part of something bigger.

08 Nov 2021How Stella Tu grew her Instagram audience, from 8K to 80K in one year.01:06:10

Send us a text

The Makeup Insider is a weekly one-on-one podcast exploring the life and career of makeup artists, hosted by freelance mua Vanessa Barney. This week: getting personal with Stella Tu, Taiwan-born mua who launched her own line, Tu+Kit and grew her following from 8,000 to 80,000 through Instagram Reels.

***Language warning***

Ever felt the cold sting of rejection? Yikes! It’s something none of us like and are rarely comfortable with. But what if I told you that rejection doesn’t mean you aren’t good enough; it means the other person failed to notice what you have to offer^.

As artists, we face rejection all too often – and what it does is actually fire up a response in our brains. For Stella, this response motivated her to self-improve and focus on what she brought to the table.

“I still get anxious on every job, but you need to know how to pick yourself up [after rejection] and learn to embrace failure – it’s through failure we learn.

Stella Tu

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

The REELS of engagement.

  1. Audit
  2. Be consistent
  3. Do reels

If you’re looking to grow your following, then stop scrolling and take a peak at some insta reels.

R•E•E•L

A short, entertaining video, where you can express your creativity. Good for brands, artists (and dog lovers... ok we just added that one in 😉😉)

For an artist, we need to be excellent at using the tools we have. When there is an opportunity to showcase your skills and creativity, we should be shouting HELL- YES!

Stella grew her Instagram following from 8,000 to 80,000 followers by using videos of applications on models recorded during photoshoots and model collabs.

Her best tip? Record short clips every time you do an application, that way you can easily combine them into an engaging reel.

“Take the time to analyse your content... What content is performing well and what isn’t? Be content critical – your audience will be, but don’t be too hard on yourself – REMEMBER: YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH.”

Stella Tu

What I learnt about Bridal.

I often hear artists are weary about getting into bridal because of the ‘bridezilla’ persona… but have you done makeup on a model who hasn’t eaten all day?

REOW – same vibes!
As an artist, if you love all things bridal, then making the transition into this area can be worth the effort. From face-to-face courses to online masterclasses, there are plenty of ways to gain experience across bridal hair and makeup. With 3 mannequins at home to practice on (blonde, red and black), Stella cautions you to practice… a lot. Bridal makeup isn’t about what you think is best for the bride, it’s about what the bride wants. Of course, you must input some of your expertise, but leave your pride at the door – today is all about THEM.

Creative ideas.
Be inspired by those who inspire you. Whether it’s an artist you can relate to, or one you admire – be passionate about your creativity.

Tu&Kit evolved during Australia’s first pandemic lockdown period. Inspired by the UK line, Stella design

06 Dec 2021Harriet Hadfield, behind the red carpet & much more!01:06:19

Send us a text

This week: getting personal with Harriet Hadfield, makeup artist, business coach and founder of freelancewithfreedom.

Hands up if you’re an all or nothing kind of person? Harriet admits she sure is! And there’s nothing wrong with giving it your all, in fact – we highly recommend it. “One day stays one day, if you never make it real ~ H.H.”

Understanding how to find your place in this industry is really, really important, and a key motivator for Harriet changing careers from makeup artist to business coach. She’s now able to now help other artists understand their worth.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

FIND YOUR WILLPOWER.
Do you have that inner voice (or best friend, business, partner, life coach, etc.) that helps you plan ahead, avoid temptation and believe in yourself? That’s all helping to strengthen your willpower.

Willpower is the ability to resist skipping steps, or giving in to temptation – in order to meet your goals.

Finding your willpower and believing in  yourself, what you can achieve and how far you can go in your career is really important, and often overlooked in our industry.

Growing up, Harriet was determined to save dolphins and be an astronaut – a little different from makeup artist and business coach, but guided by the same tenacity she has since launched a thriving business helping artists find their why.

“I’m an all or nothing person... There was no middle ground, it was like, if I had to do it, I had to be really full on. “It took a lot of willpower, to be honest with myself that ok, maybe my journey is going to look a bit different.”

Harriet Hadfield

BEHIND THE RED CARPET.

Assisting, testing, working every job and making every connection you can to land your dream job... Sound familiar? And let me be clear, I mean the crème de la crème of celebrity and fashion runways. The red carpet in LA and NYC, and Fashion Weeks in Milan and London.

Behind these big shows are dozens of makeup artists working their magic on models. Is there a celebrity or brand you want to work with? Harriet’s tips are investigate the publicist/s who represent them and be strategic about the photographers, makeup artists, directors you’re working with.

THE RIGHT MINDSET.

The narrative in creative industries is work, work, work. Literally, work until you drop – but when you’re constantly in a rush, life is not so enjoyable anymore.

Harriet is working to change this narrative, but understands it takes time to undo what generations have been taught. We work in an industry that praises (and often expects) the ‘hustle culture’, that working four jobs in a day is what success looks like. But you need to be in the right mindset, prioritise your mental health, time with family and friends, and time for yourself.

We need to start normalising slowing down, being OK with saying no and understanding looking after yourself is just as important as your career.

“I was a people pleaser… and it got me so far, but it affected my mental health… now my choices are made from a place of freedom, not fear, which I feel really happy about and encourage my clients to find the same path.”

19 Jun 2023Overcoming Imposter Syndrome in the Makeup Industry, with Fashion MUA Phoebe Fever01:30:02

Send us a text

In this episode of the Makeup Insider, host Vanessa Barney interviews hair and makeup artist Phoebe Fever, who predominantly works in fashion and advertising. Phoebe talks about how her father, who is a photographer, inspired her to pursue a career in hair and makeup.

Phoebe offers valuable advice to aspiring makeup artists. She emphasises the importance of having a fresh and open mindset and being a positive energy on set. Phoebe also highlights the significance of building connections with people and being passionate about collaborating with them. However, she cautions against becoming too focused on pleasing others and neglecting one's own boundaries. Instead, she advises knowing one's strengths and letting one's work speak for itself. She suggests that makeup artists should try to put themselves in front of people they want to work with, even if it means starting small and gradually working their way up. Ultimately, the key to a successful career in makeup artistry is to strike a balance between being a good collaborator and knowing one's own worth.

13 Dec 2021Rob Povey fashion and advertising mua who seeks inspiration from the arts, environment, and subcultures gives testing and publishing tips.01:24:36

Send us a text

The Makeup Insider is a weekly one-on-one podcast exploring the life and career of makeup artists, hosted by freelance mua Vanessa Barney. This week: getting personal with Rob Povey, fashion and advertising makeup artist who seeks inspiration from the arts, environment, and subcultures.

Makeup artists inspire and find inspiration in the world around them. Models are live billboards advertising products, setting trends, evoking feelings, and creating a sense a desire/need critical for a brand to be successful. Makeup artists are the magicians working tirelessly behind the scenes to transform the models to fit the client brief.

So much in our industry is learnt from each other. Growing up as a CIS boy with a mum and sister who didn’t wear makeup, Rob wishes growing up there was a platform like TMI where artists could find out all this industry info to help our careers.

If you’re just starting out or have been in the industry for a long time, tune in now, check out the key takeaways and subscribe for future updates below.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

MAKEUP AND HUMAN CONNECTION.

As makeup artists we crave human connection. One of the biggest challenges of the Covid lockdown experience was missing people, and missing hugs! Hugging your friend, your grandma, your hairdresser – this physical expression of gratitude is something we do quite regularly.

Sure, we work with models regularly, but they’re used to getting their hair and makeup done. It’s when you work with personal clients that the real connection emerges. These type of jobs are almost like therapy sessions, you’re really helping them see themselves in a whole new light.

“Human Connection. That’s the thing I always come back to, is that I am an introvert through and through, but I really crave human connection. So I love that my job allows that.”

Rob Povey

MAKEUP AND STORYTELLING.

Every time you do makeup on a client, you’re helping shape their narrative. The story they’re telling in that exact moment – whether it’s for a test shoot, a live shoot, on set, the runway, your makeup will set the tone (literally 😉).

Rob loves storytelling through makeup and what makes his particular makeup skills quite special, is that he marries products to the skin exceptionally well. Drawn to unconventional beauty, Rob brings a unique perspective to the industry – highly focused on the story behind every client.

“I like things that come from darkness and weirdness, and makeup is a very emotional experience for me. Makeup is less about how preachy something is, it’s more about how it makes you feel and what it tells you.”

14 Mar 2022Vogue published, commercial & editorial MUA Ashleigh Carpenter share her story.01:41:40

Send us a text

This week: getting personal with Ashleigh Carpenter, Melbourne makeup artist and hairdresser.

Predominantly working on commercial and editorial shoots, Ashleigh always wanted to be a makeup artist.
Using a mood board, she curates looks she’s obsessed with, keen to master and to influence her style. She also lets her creative side flair working Melbourne’s Spring Fashion Festivals and Sydney’s Fashion Weeks.

 KEY TAKEAWAYS:

 TEST, TEST, TEST > SHOOT

Have you ever gone to a modelling agency with a photographer and asked their clientele, ‘Hey do you want to do a shoot?’... Seems crazy, right? Well, that’s exactly what Ashleigh did, only she calls these test shoot memories, ‘Little fun things!’.

All artists, models, photographers, etc. need images for their portfolio. So, what better way to increase your network and build your portfolio all at once than through connecting these worlds?

Slowly over the years, Ashleigh found photographers through Instagram or her networks and joined forces to create test shoots based on looks she wanted to build, and showcase. Her biggest tip? Choose photographers that complement your vibe, get creative and curate the shoots in the direction best suited for you.

PUTTING THE [ASS] IN ASSISTING

It’s important to know your style and what value you bring. For Ashleigh, her style reflects being in flower fields with flowy dresses (cue Australian Ballet, Channel, this season’s clothes) and the value she brings - over 14 years in the industry, with 97% of her jobs encompassing hair & makeup.

Same goes when you’re assisting. While you may have a distinct style, you’re there to assist a lead mua, lead hair stylist or the director of the shoot. We often hear, ‘it’s better to be seen than heard’ and as harsh as that is, it’s the way of our industry. You need to learn how to assist correctly and what value you bring.

“I would go and do assisting jobs before I started work. They were massive days, but I knew I needed the experience and to build my portfolio... Each job I was sent on had a different vibe, and a very different style to the commercial jobs I had experience in, so I’m glad I put all the hard work in along the way.”

Ashleigh Carpenter

 TRUST YOUR GUT

If Ashleigh had to pass on any information, she swears it would be to really trust your gut. She took a big leap and had to trust her gut and know that what she was doing was the right thing… and thankfully, it paid off. While we recognise this isn’t always the case, trusting and validating yourself is always important.

Ashleigh also encourages listeners to try and find an agent that’s like a mentor. You shouldn’t have to sell yourself to have them represent you - because if you have a solid portfolio and online presence, they should be able to accurately see your work and know whether they want to represent you before they meet you.

“I’m a big believer in goal setting. At the start of the year, I write my goals for the year ahead and for the next 5 years. I always check-in throughout the year to see where I’m at,

14 Oct 2021Building Connections and Mastering Your Craft: Monica Gingold on Success in the Makeup Industry.01:28:05

Send us a text

Episode 1

This week: getting personal with Monica Gingold, a highly skilled, go-to makeup artist who transforms current trends into relevant concepts for the makeup industry.

For Monica Gingold, everything fell naturally in to place once she built up her little black book of industry connections (and put a hell-of-a-lot of work in along the way!).

If you’re just starting out or have been in the industry for a long time, tune in now, check out the key takeaways and subscribe for future updates.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

Starting out.

Get exposure to the industry any way you can. Take a short course, do work experience in a beauty salon or retail. Practice doing makeup for family and friends and build your portfolio.

Monica always loved hair and makeup, from watching her grandma get glam on the daily to helping do the makeup at her school play – something sparked in her that she loved and she continued to chase that spark long into her career. As a junior, the best tip Monica would give is to be confident and always offer up your skills.

“I had good direction very young and knew I wanted to work in the makeup industry, but I had no life experience and grew up in a small community. I put my hand up to work for free and assist as much as I could to start building my portfolio and learning as much as I could along the way.”

Monica Gingold

Be a chameleon.

Monica emphasises the importance of learning how to read a room. Sometimes you’ll have a client who wants to chat, other times it will be an opportunity for you to network with the other artists in the room, and sometimes it pays to just be quiet.

Learn by watching those around you and find a mentor in the industry that has opposite strengths to you. Makeup is more about how your client feels, rather than how they look. Read that again.

“Making it”.

When did Monica make it?

She is an overnight success, 10 years in the making.

Monica has experience in theatre, film tv, special effects, fashion, bridal, events, everything... and encourages all mua’s to gain experience working across different demographics. You need to constantly practice to truly master your skills and be prepared for anything – every client and every job is unique. Your skills need to be versatile enough to slay no matter the job.

Realising her strengths lay in the artistry, not the admin (and you better believe there is A LOT of admin being a freelance mua) Monica launched @Tonic – a makeup education cross bridal agency company.

“Tonic works because we were really smart about

Having good relationships in the industry is

everything. If you don’t have that organically

then having an agent is important.”

20 Dec 2021Kylie O'Toole - what a career! From her years working on feature film to directing 2021's Melbourne Fashion week, you don't want to miss a minute.01:47:23

Send us a text

This week: getting personal with Kylie O’Toole - mua whose work includes ‘dead’ bodies, intimate boob scenes and more.

Ever wondered the type of artistry that goes into making a body look ‘dead’ in the movies, on TV, etc. First you learn how they died, what that wound would like look, how the skin would look, etc. For Kylie, she found herself painting ‘dead’ bodies at the tender age of 19 – ‘mind you, this was before the age of the internet. So, our research was reading the autopsy report from the corner, looking at the photos in the files and trying to mimic that’. Crazy!

If you’re just starting out or have been in the industry for a long time, tune in now, check out the key takeaways and subscribe for future updates below.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

LEARN YOUR BOUNDARIES.

It’s hard when you’re a pleaser… but I’ve learned some pretty hardcore boundaries since then, says Kylie.

Boundaries are important to set early in your career. I hope if there’s younger artists out there listening now that they know it’s okay to say no. There’s so much talk about all of this right now in the media, especially if it’s a woman doing it to you, it can feel very different. It’s your right to say no, no matter the circumstances.

When the stakes are high on a job, it’s a lot more stressful. Often the thing that stresses you out, makes you feel so good after you do them. As you get older you learn that it will be okay, that if things don’t work out, it will still all work out.

“I was wondering why I had IBS… but it’s from all the stress. It’s like, OMG I’m not bloody saving lives, but you feel like you are, you feel like if you make a mistake, you might as well, run away and live on an island somewhere. (but) I learnt the importance of setting boundaries and saying no.”

Kylie O’Toole

PERSISTANCE PAYS OFF.

Be persistent. If all you take away from this podcast episode is one thing, it’s that persistence pays off!

When you’re just starting out, it’s hard to know where to draw professional lines in the sand. Sometimes you have to chase up a client, an account, a company. Sometimes the hours are long, very long. It can be intense and ‘feel like camp’ laughs Kylie. Everything is heightened (including your emotions), but being persistent, full of passion and being open to new opportunities is part of the fun.

Kylie understands that putting yourself out there is almost scarier than getting the work. Your first test shoot, your first paid shoot, the first time with a new client. It can be *bloody* scary, but they can often turn into the best experiences.

‘When I arrived in London, all I had was a phone number and (she) never answered… I just kept on trying, kept on calling. I was persistent. And then one day she finally answered the phone… She turned out to be the most awesome human in the world, Scottish tough with a heart of gold. She used to tell me to toughen up constantly, she’s so creative and clever – she’s actually the designer of GoT.

17 Jan 2022From corporate to MUA, find out how Ebony Kay's had a client base before finishing MU school01:24:43

Send us a text

This week: getting personal with Ebony Kay, film, TV and special effects mua and prosthetics specialist.

From a creative arts background at school to falling in love with special effects artistry and anything involving character-creation, Ebony had over 200 hours of work experience when she finished studying and launched her freelancing career.

Are you interested in special effects? Not sure what’s involved or where to start… listen as we dive into the details with Ebony, as she shares her work experience, when she realised this is what she wanted to specialise in and how fellow artists are your biggest teachers and best contacts.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

LET’S TALK PROSTHETICS.

Companies need special affects for campaigns, such as anti-smoking, pool safety, hospitals, fire brigade, world vision, etc. They need injury simulation and training activities, but it also gives you creative freedom to build quirky characters, develop character plots and bring to life the unimaginable.

Moving to LA to understand prosthetics, Ebony studied an advanced prosthetics course where she learnt creature prosthetics, like Men In Black style. From there she got an internship in the special effect’s lab, working with Universal Studios and Monster Palooza.

Later in her career, Ebony collaborated with fellow artist, and together they launched Australian Effects Studio (no longer in operation).

FUN FACT: Ebony had to build a prosthetics workshop in a makeup bus for a film she worked on in NZ. She transformed one side into prosthetics and special effects and used the other side as her makeup studio.

 INSIDE FILM.

From independent films, short films and student films to TV film and universal studios – there are different avenues for artists to learn the ‘rites of passage’, and each company has their own system, but it’s all similar.

Inside the world of film it’s important to learn your place, when to step in and what’s expected of you. You can expect to do lots of paperwork and photos. The photos help with continuity on set, for example how the hair will move when the actor/actress walks through the door, where it’s going to land. It’s these minute details that are critical to character development, and many artists don’t anticipate the paperwork that is involved with it.

You’ll be printing the photos and writing the notes. If you’re lucky you’ll have an iPad to record it all, but if you’re working on a small set or indie film you might need to practice reading your scribble!

Ebony explains what ‘continuity’ is, it’s the continuation of makeup to make sure it matches from scene to scene. As most shows and films aren’t shot in sequence, you always need to make sure that the makeup, hair and special effects match. Maintaining the look so that the viewer isn’t distracted by something that’s visually incorrect on set.

TEACHING & LEARNING.

Ebony didn’t realise how much work wou
