16 Feb 2022Seed Cycling With Kate Morton00:46:50

Part of holistic wellness is understanding that everything in the body is connected. Hormone balance affects many other areas of your health, and when this delicate balance is thrown off for some reason, your body’s way of telling you can be through menstrual changes, energy issues, digestive troubles, insomnia, infertility, and more.

For getting hormones back in balance, seed cycling can be a powerful way to use whole foods to improve your wellbeing. To discuss this gentle method,  we are joined by Kate Morton, a Registered Dietitian with a master's degree in Human Clinical Nutrition that focuses on women's health and fertility. She’s also the founder of Funk It Wellness, a menstrual health company on a mission to end PMS, naturally.

09 Mar 2022Plant Wisdom With Miranda Aponte00:56:59

Miranda Aponte is an herbalist-in-training of the Puerto Rican diaspora sharing the intersections of healing + eco + social co liberation on Mariposa. With the passing of her curandera grandmother, she got the courage to create a space to share healing modalities, practitioners, and an apothecary. Mariposa uplifts ancient, ancestral, and indigenous wisdoms with reverence and the respect that these sacred practices come from communities that have been targeted for centuries. The hope is to provide support in tapping back into our innate wisdom and returning to our roots as Earth stewards.

In this episode, we talk about the commercialization of herbalism, working with plant spirits, responsibly connecting with the land, elemental medicine, and the relationship between plants and death.

23 Mar 2022Behind the PMS Cravings00:26:21

PMS cravings are all the rage (sometimes literally) in the luteal phase of our cycles. When we’re not clued into our monthly changes, it might feel like something otherworldly has taken over and cleaned out the fridge.

Intense cravings can be the result of a few different things: emotional needs, physical hunger, or a sign that your body needs a certain type of nourishment. How can you tell which is which? We'll talk about it on today's show.

13 Apr 2022Kitchen Witch Basics00:27:41

If you’re wondering whether or not you can be a kitchen witch, there’s no initiation, there’s no gatekeeper, no certification or exam. You are one if you decide to be one!

I talk a lot about eating intentionally — thinking about how you want to feel and choosing foods that align with that goal. It’s about being present and empowered with your food choices.

But there is another type of way that we can eat intentionally, and that’s with kitchen witchery. This is choosing food for its magical or energetic properties. Making magic out of your meals, and incorporating food into your rituals.

We’ll talk about:

  •  how to read a recipe
  • essential kitchen items
  • different ways you can infuse your energy and intentions into your meals
  • my favorite books for going further
  • rituals to try to get started

20 Apr 2022Overcoming Intuitive Eating Roadblocks With Tomesha Campbell00:46:44

Intuitive eating is a gentle approach to health and life that prioritizes feeling good in your body. It helps you cultivate a much more relaxed relationship with food, but the process isn't always easy. It takes time and patience, and a lot of work to unlearn and reframe diet culture messaging we've learned over the years.

Weight-inclusive health coach Tomesha Campbell joins me to talk about how you can work through some common roadblocks that people typically come across when trying to adopt an intuitive eating lifestyle.

Tomesha Campbell is an experienced health coach, speaker, and blogger. She is driven by the desire to support women to break up with the scale and develop a positive body image through a weight-inclusive approach to health. Tomesha's journey with weight and body image has been a long one, but it's taught her that health is about so much more than weight. Tomesha has been featured on Autoimmune Wellness, the SPI Blog, and Boston While Black. She currently resides in Watertown, MA with her dog, Penny Deena.

04 May 2022Answering Your Questions!00:41:53

The final episode of the season is a special Q+A episode about nutrition, menstrual health, intuitive eating, hormones, and more. I answer the following questions:

  • Is protein-combining worth considering when it comes to your nutrition?
  • Why am I so depressed before my period?
  • How do you deal with burnout, particularly from work?
  • Do you have any recommendations for working with or healing PCOS?
  • If you don’t ovulate, which phase of your cycle are you technically in?
  • How can I track my cycle if the temperature is off from thyroid issues and inconsistent sleep?
  • When it comes to intuitive eating, I have a hard time with the “food police” principle. That voice is hard to get rid of. Do you have any suggestions on how to focus on that?
  • How can one manage hormone changes that affect your food intuition especially during menstruation or as we age?

16 Nov 2022Cyclical Activism with Janine Mulone00:30:45

Cyclical activism is a practice of being politically involved in a way that is ongoing and sustainable. In the same way that we use cycles to create supportive personal self-care practices, we can use cycles to ensure we are taking action towards collective change in a way we can keep up long-term. I am joined by Janine Mulone of Feel Good Retail for this episode, which is a re-airing of our 2020 podcast It's Just a Phase.

Many people share with me that they feel like they're learning about their bodies and their intuition "too late" in life, and that they want to avoid the same happening with their children. In this episode, I share how to nurture and support your child in having a healthy relationship with food, with their body image and bodily functions, their menstrual cycle (or sibling's cycle), and spiritual practice. 21 Dec 2022The Fertility Cliff Myth + Preconception Planning00:26:39

The "fertility cliff," or the idea that your fertility takes a complete nosedive on your 35th birthday, is a longstanding myth. In fact, it's based on some really old research (like, shockingly old) and the decline and risks associated with being of "advanced maternal age" are not as dire as we're told. In this episode, I explore the research on this topic and what the numbers actually say, and offer some nutrition and lifestyle recommendations for preconception planning if you are preparing for pregnancy.

25 Jan 2023How Capitalism Impacts Your Period00:21:16

Capitalism requires us to work like machines, producing the same level of output day after day. Humans just can't work like that, especially those of us with menstrual cycles whose energy, focus, creativity, and more shift from one phase to the next. This week's episode explores how this patriarchal structure of working and living can have an impact on your period and your cycle health.

01 Feb 2023The Menstrual Phases as Tarot Archetypes00:23:34

My favorite part about cycle syncing is that you can find so many areas of your life and interests to apply it to. Tarot is a tool for self-reflection and self-awareness, and in this episode, we explore how you can align with your cycle by embodying different archetypes found in the cards. I provide specific examples of archetypes from the major and minor arcana that mirror the energy of each cycle phase, to give context to what's going on mentally and physically in the body and help you organize your self-care around your cycle.

29 Mar 2023What You Need to Know About Perimenopause00:27:40

For my listeners who have been in their menstrual years for quite some time... this one's for you. Perimenopause is a-comin', and it may not be as far off as you think. In fact, symptoms can start as early as your late 30s (though it's more likely to happen in your mid-40s), which is why I want to share what to expect when you're expecting menopause. We weren't educated about our periods before we got them, so I want to make sure you're armed with the right knowledge and tools before this next phase of your reproductive life.

We talk about:

  • The wide-ranging symptoms of perimenopause, like hot flashes, mood swings, and decreased libido.
  • The hormonal impact on your anatomy, including changes to the vulva, cervix, uterus, and ovaries.
  • Why it's so important to manage stress in perimenopause (beyond the usual reasons).
  • Body composition changes like bone density and muscle loss.
  • Viewing menopause as an opportunity, instead of a sentence.

24 Mar 2021Diet Culture Dropout00:39:37

This episode is brought to you by my Hormone Harmony series happening Wednesdays in March. Upcoming classes: Fertility for Everyone & Finding Relief From PMS and Period Pain. Save your seat here.

This one's a doozy today, friends. Content warning: I'm going on a rant about weight loss and post-pandemic body talk that I've been seeing lately. I share the Facebook thread from someone in the media who got me thinking about this issue, and we also talk about dropping out of diet culture, as well as what's wrong with the modern body-positivity movement.

I am also sharing resources about supporting the AAPI community in the face of the vicious hate crimes against Asian women that occurred recently in Atlanta.

21 Apr 2021How Changing Your Diet Can Change Your Period00:35:58
28 Apr 2021Biohacking for Menstruators00:36:27

If the term "biohacking" conjures up images of Silicon Valley tech bros ingesting weird pills for dinner and plugging all their personal metrics into their iPhone apps, you'd be right. But it's also things like meditating, using medicinal herbs, and eating for your cycle.

The conventional way the wellness industry talks about biohacking, however, wasn't really designed for lunar bodies. This episode discusses what it actually is, examples you may or may not be familiar with, and what it can look like for you in a way that doesn't mess up your hormone health.

05 May 2021Embracing Your Lunar Energy (A Tarot-Guided Episode)00:32:34

Society places a heavy emphasis on "solar" qualities that are prized in corporate settings, where more "lunar" qualities are not as well-respected in our culture. This can leave us feeling pretty imbalanced. In this episode, Kristen takes you through five ways you can embrace your divine lunar energy, guided by the tarot. Before that, Kristen discusses the recent Oatly drama and helps you decide whether it's the right milk alternative for you.

12 May 2021The State of Menstrual Health00:30:56

We're expected to function like capitalist robots in our culture, but we don't power on and off the same way every single day. Period underwear, tampon taxes, menstrual leave, and more — this episode offers a look at the state of menstrual health in the US, the violent roots of gynecological care, where we've made progress, and where we could definitely see some improvements. '

**Note: In this episode I mention 700K covid deaths — I misspoke! As of this recording, we are closer to 600K deaths in the US.

This episode is supported by my FREE WORKSHOP: The Patriarchy vs. Your Body, happening on May 19th. If you can't make it live, RSVP anyway to get the replay emailed to you.
