19 Apr 2023On Hollywood Predators: Running Fast & Far From Showbiz00:16:06

It’s no secret that Hollywood is infested with creeps. And for every young, wide-eyed actress/model/musician/dancer looking to make it big, these predators have mastered the art of luring naive talent into their sticky webs.

I’ve had my run-ins with a few of them. These encounters have been fewer and further between as I've grown apart from my career in the fashion industry, but they’ve put a significant dent in my opinion of many of the men running the show in Hollywood.

In this episode I tell the horror story of an A-List producer and why I ran fast & far from the alleged opportunity of a lifetime.

As I continue to prepare for the Berlin Marathon, I also explore my current media diet, including an array of memoirs I've been listening to on Audible. 27 Jun 2023Behind the Glamour: The Reality Of Living In Models' Apartments00:19:31

You're about to step behind the camera and explore the unvarnished truth of my early years in the world of fashion modeling. Imagine a shared living space in Athens, Greece, a small apartment in New York City, and a myriad of experiences and emotions tied up in each. The struggles, the loneliness, and the sheer effort of figuring out basic life skills on my own. This episode takes you through a world of castings, nightlife, and pressure, but also the lesser-known reality of model apartments and club promoters.

But this journey isn't just about glitz and glamour - there's a darker side to it all. As we move deeper into my experiences, I recount unsettling encounters with club promoters and reveal a chaotic lifestyle that often left me questioning my place in it all. I share stories that might surprise you - of young girls I met, of introduction to harmful behaviors like drugs, alcohol, depression, and starvation. This is a raw and honest account of my modeling journey, breaking down the facade of glamour and laying bare the reality of what goes on behind the scenes. Come, walk through this journey with me.

28 Jun 2023The Unretouched Reality of the Modeling World00:21:25

Have you ever wondered what really goes on behind the glamorous façade of the modeling industry? I reveal the good, the bad, and the downright ugly in this candid episode. I take you back to the 2000s, a wild west era in modeling, before the Me Too movement or social media had any influence. It was a time when control came from adults who dictated my body, my diet, and even my hair. Listen as I recount the harsh reality of having my weight discussed in cold, objective terms, and the lasting impact this has had on my self-perception. I hope things have changed, but it's important to reflect on these experiences.

The journey continues into the body image struggles that were all too common amongst models in the industry. Hear how the pressure to conform to a certain size dominated conversations, discouraged exercise, and even exempted me from PE classes. It was an era where drastic weight loss was celebrated, and I found myself on the cover of a magazine despite being over my agency's 'desired' size. Brace yourself as we delve into the challenges of navigating this world, from bracing for body shaming comments, to dealing with creepy individuals. This episode is not just a trip down memory lane, it's a call for a healthier, more inclusive industry, where success isn't measured by the number on the scale.

I'll share how this new perspective led to breakthroughs in races and changed my relationship with food, sobriety, and my body. Reflect with me on the importance of flexibility, trust, and not setting too many expectations in life as we approach a new year filled with endless possibilities.

This episode is about my unlikely introduction to running, my struggles, and my triumphs.

Shift gears with me as we explore the weight of expectations and how they can mold us. Hear the story of my PE teacher, the first person to predict my athletic potential, and how this prediction ignited an unquenchable flame within me. I also lay bare the stark differences between my supportive father and my disapproving mother and how their reactions influenced my journey. 23 Nov 2024Balancing NYC Chaos vs. Texas Tranquility... (+ Answering Your Questions About Training, Aging, & More)00:52:52

This episode talks about how the bustling streets of New York City compare to the laid-back life of Texas. It's been a challenge of living a dual life between two very different worlds. With my brilliant producer, Jason Belsky, by my side, we share the evolution of our creative journey, from expanding our studio space to juggling diverse projects. This episode uncovers my love-hate relationship with the grind of city life, and the surprising personal growth that comes from balancing these contrasting environments.

Ever had a neighbor who seems to test the very limits of your sanity? Jason and I recount our separate ongoing sagas with noisy neighbors, those unwelcome symphonies of urban living, and the delicate art of managing one's peace in shared spaces. We tackle the generational shift in parenting styles and how it echoes through the thin walls of apartment life. Whether it's confronting the cacophony or adjusting to the quietude of Texas nights, this colorful narrative offers a slice of the complex tapestry that is city dwelling.

Exploring topics from motherhood at 35 to the peculiar world of marathons in Crocs, this episode doesn't shy away from the unique and unexpected. I share my reflections on future life choices, the modern landscape of dating in New York, and the curious allure of "rage listening" to provocative podcasts. With humor and introspection, we dive into the dynamics of personal and professional growth, revealing the quirks and inspirations that keep us moving forward.

25 Nov 2024Running Towards Recovery: Nolan John On Sobriety and Ultra Endurance00:52:16

What if you could transform your life through the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other? On today's show I am joined by Nolan John, an ultra runner who swapped the Midwest lanes of Chicago for the sunlit trails of Austin, Texas. From traversing through the wild landscapes of The Speed Project (an ultra marathon relay race), Nolan shares his exhilarating journey of personal growth through ultra-endurance running. Together, we unpack the chaos and creativity that comes with unsanctioned racing, where every step is a chance to run towards better versions of ourselves.

My story runs parallel to Nolan’s, as I recount a personal path to finding sobriety through running. Nolan shares with me his own path to getting sober with a heartbreaking loss of friends and the dark days he had following a near death motorcycle accident.

Navigating sobriety's challenges in a world filled with temptations becomes a shared theme as we discuss the strength in replacing harmful habits with healthier ones. From facing societal pressures to embracing imperfections, we reflect on how running and sobriety intertwine, offering paths to self-discovery and growth. We also emphasize the courage it takes to redefine oneself and the ongoing commitment to a better, more authentic life. Join us on this journey as we uncover the transformative power of running.

08 Dec 2024Zach Bitter: The Art of Running 100 Miles01:00:35

Ultrarunning legend Zach Bitter joins us for an inspiring conversation about his relationship with the 100 mile distance. Reflecting on Zach's incredible accomplishments, including his world and American records, we delve into how his perseverance motivated personal running goals. We talk about the nuances of adapting to new environments like heat and incline training as well as the mental power it takes to push yourself to the max.

Zach's transition from collegiate running to the grueling world of ultramarathons was unlikely but it has been a fruitful pursuit that's shown him he's capable of a lot more than he ever expected. Discover the delicate balance between training volume and speed workouts, and unpack the strategies necessary for conquering a 100-mile race. I ask him to break down for me in laymen's terms how to go about pacing, staying in the zone on track courses, and what to do when things don’t go as planned—(or like how a simple extension cord can save a treadmill record attempt).

The conversation also opens up about the crucial elements of nutrition and recovery, highlighting personal experiences from races and the adaptable nature of dietary strategies like a modified keto diet. We discuss how to manage hydration and nutrition effectively during grueling events, and the importance of strength training and injury prevention. From the potential of negative splitting to the thrill of setting personal records, this episode captures the essence of pushing boundaries in ultrarunning, with inspiration drawn from iconic figures like Alexander Sorokin and Camille Heron.

03 Sep 2019Life As A Stand-Up Comic: Sallie Smith-Fitch talks about the comedy scene in NYC00:34:20

I’ve lived in New York City for a dozen years of my life, and one of the best things about that is crossing paths with so many different kinds of striving, determined people going after their dreams.

When I first moved here, I literally had nothing except the clothes on my back but I knew I had the drive to get me to where I want to go. I crashed on couches and found a way to get in front of the right people at the right time to end up being able to actually live here, which was a dream come true.

So on today’s show, I’m going to have a conversation with my friend Sallie who I met years ago when we both worked at the same place. I was on a break from my modeling career where I picked up a job working in a coffee shop where Sallie showed me how to steam milk and make the perfect cappuccino.

When I started working there I looked up her Instagram before I actually knew her, and saw she does all these stand-up comedy shows around the city. Which is a pretty crazy side hustle. So today we are gonna talk about the stand-up scene as well as just what motivates us to go after our dreams.

19 Sep 2019Wild Wild Woman: 5th Generation Alaskan Sophie Frost on Reclaiming Fashion as Sustainable Self Expression00:55:01

Named after her great grandmother who was the first woman to settle in Alaska from Sweden, Sophie Frost is an artist and writer living here in New York. It’s safe to say, she stands out no matter where she goes. She’s striking as a human (and I don’t mean because she’s really tall and dresses cool) but instead because she carries a spark of energy that is engaging and fascinated by life. She also has a pretty wild story of moving here all the way from out west to go to art school at Pratt majoring in Critical and Visual studies.

On the show we talk about how Twitter makes us better writers, walking for Fashion Week, fashion as the most utilitarian art, the difference between Gen Z & Millenials, where art resides in us, what makes us create, love, what it was like living in Berlin, and how we identify with the tough Viking sisterhood that we both share.

Now, with over 300 days now of sobriety under my belt, I thought I’d shed some light on what that looks like now.

31 May 2020I Ran 76 Miles On The Track In 17 Hours00:37:39

I signed up for the Orchard Street Runners 100 mile global running challenge on a whim after running a few spontaneous solo marathons during the COVID shutdown. After running my first sanctioned marathon last December, I began toying with the idea of covering more than 26.2 miles in a day — or dipping my toes in the world of ultra endurance. This virtual event seemed like the perfect excuse to take a stab at something new.

I went out hoping for 100 miles but will take 76.
