Dr. Kristen Willeumier (@kwilleumier) conducted her graduate research in the laboratory of Neurophysiology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the laboratory of Neurogenetics at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.  She received MS degrees in Physiological science and Neurobiology and a Ph.D. degree in Neurobiology from the University of California, Los Angeles. She was a postdoctoral scientist in the Department of Neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where she continued her work in the field of neurodegenerative disease. 

She was the recipient of a National Research Service Award Fellowship from the National Institutes of Health and has presented her work internationally. 

Having served as the Director of Neuroimaging Research for the Amen Clinics, she led the efforts in utilizing imaging technologies to understand the neurobiological correlates underlying psychiatric disorders. 

In this capacity, she oversaw many pioneering studies, including a clinical research trial investigating the long-term effects of repetitive subconcussive impacts in National Football League players, and developed a protocol to successful reverse brain damage and improve cognitive health!

Dr. Willeumier is widely published in peer-reviewed journals including The Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, Translational Psychiatry, and The Journal of Neuroscience.

Dr. Kryskow is actively involved in research related to psilocybin, MDMA, ketamine, mental wellness, chronic pain, and neurogenesis. Co-investigator on the largest microdosing study  Microdose.me which is ongoing with 14,500+ enrolled participants. Dr. Kryskow is a Clinical Instructor at the University of British Columbia and an Adjunct Professor at Vancouver Island University. As the medical lead on the Roots To Thrive Ketamine Assisted Therapy program which treats health care providers with PTSD, depression, anxiety, and addiction. In real life, she loves foraging in the forest, ocean kayaking, growing kale, and daydreaming in the hammock.

My second guest is Dr. Laura McLean, a physician whose background includes practicing internal medicine, respirology, and critical care, and for the past 9 years, primarily sleep medicine. Most recently, Dr. McLean has been working as a consultant in sleep disorders in a multidisciplinary lifestyle medicine clinic in Canada. Her connection with the Roots to Thrive program started as a participant in cohort number 3, and she has now become a team member, currently in the role of a co-facilitator/mentee.

My third guest is Andrea Lemp who has been leading health and wellness programs in Vancouver for over 30 years. A specialist in Community and Hospital Mental Health and Addictions, Andrea has practiced and led in diverse Specialty Hospital and Community settings. She is a graduate of BCIT’s Psychiatric Nursing and Registered Nursing Programs and a graduate of UBC’s Bachelor and Master of Science in Nursing Programs. Andrea concluded her 30-year hospital and community career, shifting from the limits of conventional psychiatry, she now supports individuals, groups, and leaders to recover their full health and unlock their true potential in body, mind, and spirit. Addressing the root cause of disease, this approach represents combining the new fields of Psychedelic and  Functional Medicine.

Dr. Kristen Willeumier (@kwilleumier) conducted her graduate research in the laboratory of Neurophysiology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the laboratory of Neurogenetics at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.  She received MS degrees in Physiological science and Neurobiology and a Ph.D. degree in Neurobiology from the University of California, Los Angeles. She was a postdoctoral scientist in the Department of Neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where she continued her work in the field of neurodegenerative disease.  She was the recipient of a National Research Service Award Fellowship from the National Institutes of Health and has presented her work internationally. 

Having served as the Director of Neuroimaging Research for the Amen Clinics, she led the efforts in utilizing imaging technologies to understand the neurobiological correlates underlying psychiatric disorders. 

In this capacity, she oversaw many pioneering studies, including a clinical research trial investigating the long-term effects of repetitive subconcussive impacts in National Football League players, and developed a protocol to successfully reverse brain damage and improve cognitive health!

Dr. Willeumier is widely published in peer-reviewed journals including The Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, Translational Psychiatry, and The Journal of Neuroscience.

Today’s guest is Leslie Kenny, founder of Oxford Healthspan. Leslie is a Southern Californian entrepreneur and graduate of both Berkeley and Harvard, whose life was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis in her 30s. When her doctors told her lupus had a life expectancy of five years and that RA could only be managed, not cured, she set out to optimize her health as best she could with safe, natural solutions. She went back to school at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in NYC, became a Bulletproof coach under health pioneer Dave Asprey, and took on health coaching clients worldwide.

 

At the same time, she began helping life science academics at European universities, including Oxford (where she lives), to raise money for their discoveries. At a meeting with one such scientist, she learned about a natural compound called spermidine, abundant in nattō, a traditional Japanese dish that she had grown up with. Spermidine was showing great promise supporting health as we age.

 

The science was compelling – one scientist even called it “an anti-aging vitamin” in a published scientific journal – and it was safe. Still, because it was natural, food-derived, and not a drug that would bring in more money, no one was interested in promoting it. Leslie immediately wanted her octogenarian mother back home in California to take it – especially since nattō is very hard to come by (it's pretty smelly, for one thing!). Unfortunately, spermidine wasn't available in the US (or really even known there). Spotting this unmet need, she decided to bring it to the US herself.

 

Today, at age 56, Leslie is living proof that we can get better with age, so long as we take responsibility for our health and meet our doctors halfway. Spermidine is part of her anti-aging arsenal, and she hopes it will become part of yours too.

Harris holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Honours Biomedical Sciences from the University of Waterloo.
