13 Nov 2024Day 13: Food Struggles and Body Image Battles - 30 days, 30 episodes00:12:59

Today, I want to share my personal struggle with food and body image, a journey that began when I was around 12 years old. I also want to highlight the often-overlooked issue of how men can face similar challenges with body dysmorphia and unhealthy eating habits. Through this conversation, I hope to normalize these discussions and remind listeners that they are not alone in their experiences.

Here are some key takeaways:

  • My struggles with food began at the age of 12, which significantly shaped my relationship with eating.
  • Men also experience body image issues and disordered eating, yet this is often ignored in society.
  • My unhealthy relationship with food was rooted in unresolved grief that I experienced during my younger years.
  • It is vital to discuss food and body image openly, as this can help normalize these conversations.
  • Finding a balance between healthy eating and mental well-being continues to be an ongoing challenge for me.
  • Acknowledging our struggles and seeking support when needed is crucial.

23 Nov 2024Day 22: Wicked: Worth the Hype – 30 days, 30 episodes00:07:44

Today, I discuss the much-anticipated movie adaptation of Wicked, which has finally arrived after years of development. As a long-time fan of the Broadway show, I am excited about the performances, particularly those of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who truly brought their characters to life.

The movie runs for 2 hours and 45 minutes, and I found myself completely engaged throughout, not once feeling the urge to check out (or run to the restroom). Visually stunning and rich in storytelling, it captures the original work's essence while introducing new elements that enhance the narrative.

Go see it and let me know what you think!

06 Aug 2024Finding Roots as a Child of German & Jewish Refugees | Dena Rueb Romero01:00:57

In this episode of "The Life Shift Podcast," Dena Rueb Romero shares her experiences growing up as the child of German Jewish refugees in Hanover, New Hampshire, and the impact of her family's past on her sense of identity and belonging. The conversation delves into themes of loss, resilience, and the search for a sense of rootedness, offering listeners a deeply moving narrative that explores the interplay between personal and collective histories.

The Impact of Family History on Personal Identity

Dena's narrative illustrates how the traumatic experiences of her parents, both German Jewish refugees, deeply influenced her sense of identity. Growing up, she felt isolated and different from her peers, burdened with the unspoken losses her family endured during the Holocaust. Her parents' resilience and their efforts to shield her from their painful past shaped her understanding of herself and her place in the world. This theme underscores the lasting effects of historical trauma and how personal histories are interwoven with larger historical contexts.

The Challenges and Rewards of Writing a Personal Memoir

One of the significant aspects of Dena's journey is her experience writing a book about her family's story. She compares the process to having a baby, acknowledging the immense effort and emotional labor involved. Despite the challenges, Dena found immense joy and catharsis in completing her memoir. It serves not only as a tribute to her family's resilience but also as a means of preserving their legacy. This takeaway highlights the therapeutic potential of writing and the importance of storytelling in processing and honoring one's past.

Finding Roots and Connection to Ancestral Heritage

A pivotal moment in Dena's story is her visit to the Jewish cemetery in her father's hometown, where she discovers the graves of her great-grandparents. This experience provides her with a profound connection to her ancestors and a deeper understanding of her family's roots. It symbolizes her journey towards finding a sense of belonging and anchoring herself in her heritage. This theme underscores the importance of acknowledging and honoring one's ancestry to ground oneself in the present and foster a sense of connection.

Guest Bio

Retired social worker Dena Rueb Romero grew up in Hanover, New Hampshire. She graduated from Brandeis University, received an MA in English from the University of Virginia, and received an MSW from Boston College Graduate School of Social Work. Her essay about German citizenship was published in a book about reclaiming German citizenship. All for You is her first full-length book. Dena still lives in Hanover, singing in a women’s chorus, volunteering at a daycare center, and working with an organization supporting refugees and asylum seekers.

12 Apr 2022The Importance of Support: Finding a Community During Infertility | Lauren Yard00:48:32

Lauren joined me to talk about her journey of building her family. She is happily married with two children under three years old. However, it was not an easy journey for Lauren as she faced over two years of infertility and multiple miscarriages. We discuss the need for support and normalizing discussions about seemingly taboo topics. We also talk about letting go and controlling the things in our power and allowing life to teach us the lessons it has for us.

Lauren is a mom of 2 human boys and two dogs. With such an energetic crew, she looks to her husband for comedic relief and calmness when the household seems a little chaotic. She can frequently be found in a flower garden, reading young adult novels, sitting in the sunshine, and eating cold food and leftover snacks because… kids. She prides herself on finding a way to make things work when all hope seems lost--fully aware that some call that denial; she calls it persistence.

This week, many feel the strain of differing beliefs and values, prompting a reevaluation of relationships, particularly within families. I share some of my own experiences, notably with my mother's side of the family after her passing and the realization that maintaining these ties often felt one-sided. It's essential to recognize that we are not obligated to hold onto relationships that don’t serve our well-being. Ultimately, I encourage you to choose the people who uplift and support you, emphasizing that it's okay to prioritize your own mental and emotional health over societal expectations.

Takeaways:

  • It's essential to prioritize relationships that bring joy and fulfillment into our lives.
  • Communication is a two-way street; if you're always reaching out, reconsider the relationship.
  • We don't have to maintain ties with family or friends that don't serve us positively.
  • Sometimes, we must make difficult decisions to protect our emotional well-being and happiness.
  • Recognizing that not all relationships deserve equal effort can lead to healthier connections.
  • Life is too short to invest time in relationships that do not nurture our growth.

10 Sep 2024Two Cultures, One Authentic Self | Jasmin Faulk-Dickerson01:10:17

In this episode of "The Life Shift Podcast," Jasmin Faulk-Dickerson shares her extraordinary journey of growing up and finding herself within the contrasting cultures of Saudi Arabia and Italy. Jasmin shares the internal conflicts and societal challenges she faced, her use of imagination as a means of coping, and her ultimate quest for living an authentic life. This episode offers a heartfelt and inspiring narrative about resilience, creativity, and the courage to embrace one's true identity.

Navigating Dual Cultures

Jasmin's upbringing between Saudi Arabia and Italy presented unique challenges and opportunities, shaping her worldview and identity. At home, she experienced Italian customs, language, and an open atmosphere; while in public and at school in Saudi Arabia, she encountered traditional and conservative expectations. This juxtaposition created a sense of internal conflict and confusion, as she had to switch between these two worlds constantly. Jasmin’s story highlights the complexities and richness of living between two cultures and the challenges of balancing them.

Escapism and Imagination

Confronted with the restrictive societal norms of Saudi Arabia, Jasmin turned to her imagination and creativity as a means of escape. She, along with her siblings and friends, created entire worlds, complete with their own languages and characters. This imaginative escapism provided a mental sanctuary where she could freely express herself and explore her identity without fear of repercussions. Her love for Michael Jackson and her private performances in her bedroom served as another outlet for her creative and artistic inclinations. These activities were not just pastimes but vital coping mechanisms that helped her navigate her constrained reality.

Quest for Authenticity

Jasmin’s journey is ultimately one of seeking and finding authenticity. Growing up, she was often advised to hide her true feelings and conform to societal expectations to avoid trouble. However, suppressing her true self led to an internal struggle and a deep yearning for freedom and authenticity. Her story underscores the importance of living a life true to oneself despite external pressures and constraints. Jasmin’s eventual escape from Saudi Arabia was pivotal in her journey toward self-discovery and living an authentic life. Her experience serves as an inspiring reminder of the courage it takes to pursue one’s true identity and the fulfillment that comes from living authentically.

Guest Bio

Jasmin is a social and behavioral researcher, author, speaker, podcaster, and cultural identity advocate. Born in the Middle East to an Arabian father and Italian mother, Jasmin has lived the intersectionality of her identities through challenges and triumphs as the product of the first generation of bi-cultural children in a conservative and isolated Saudi Arabia of the 1970s/80s. Jasmin's areas of expertise include deconstructing social & cultural bias, social identity, social/cultural oppression, women's rights, multicultural perspective, racial/ethnic understanding, and radical ideologies. In her memoir, "The Last Sandstorm," Jasmin highlights the colorful and challenging experiences of her upbringing in Saudi Arabia, which led to her harrowing escape in her 20s. Jasmin hosts the podcast "I Want You To Meet," where she engages with artists and activists in inspiring and educational conversations.

The conversation, intended to be a simple check-in, became a public airing of grievances, with pointed accusations and insinuations that left Alan feeling attacked and undermined. This uncomfortable scenario, compounded by the presence of witnesses, forced him to confront the realities of an unfit leadership dynamic, highlighting the importance of workplace culture and the profound impact of leadership styles on employee morale. The experience served as a wake-up call, prompting Alan to reassess his professional values and aspirations, ultimately leading him to establish a coaching business focused on supporting others through significant life shifts.

The dichotomy of comfort and discomfort runs deep in Alan's story. Initially, he had thrived under a previous supportive boss, cultivating a safe environment where risks were encouraged and failures were seen as learning opportunities. In stark contrast, the new leadership style was one of power, leading to an atmosphere filled with fear and insecurity. Alan's reflections illuminate the importance of emotional intelligence and the need for leaders to foster environments where open communication and trust are prioritized. This episode serves not only as a personal reflection on his journey but also as a broader commentary on the critical nature of leadership in shaping workplace dynamics and individual fulfillment.

Takeaways:

  • Creating a supportive work environment cannot be overstated; toxic leadership hampers growth.
  • Coaching is a valuable tool for leaders to navigate challenges and enhance their skills.
  • Finding the right fit in professional relationships is essential for long-term success and satisfaction.
  • Every struggle in a career can be a learning opportunity that shapes future success.

As Alan discusses his transition from employee to entrepreneur, he underscores the significance of aligning one's work with personal values. The realization that his previous role was no longer fulfilling sparked a courageous leap into entrepreneurship, where he could create a space for himself that resonated with his true self. Alan emphasizes that change is often uncomfortable but necessary for personal growth. His journey captures the essence of embracing vulnerability and taking bold steps towards a more authentic life, inspiring listeners to reflect on their career paths and the moments that catalyze change.

05 Nov 2024Day 5: What Would You Do Differently? - 30 Days, 30 Episodes00:13:28

In this episode, I reflect on the complexities of wanting to change pivotal moments in my life, particularly regarding a significant decision I made in 2017. I think about whether I would go back and alter my choice to return to Orlando from Colorado, considering how that decision has shaped my current relationships and experiences. I also draw parallels to the film "Sliding Doors," which illustrates how a single decision can lead to vastly different life paths. Ultimately, while I acknowledge the temptation to rethink past choices, I emphasize the importance of accepting those decisions as part of my journey that has led me to where I am today.

Takeaways:

1. Reflecting on past choices can be complicated, especially when those choices have shaped who we are today.

2. Life changes often arise from hasty decisions made during moments of emotional turmoil.

3. Understanding the reasons behind our decisions helps us better comprehend our life choices.

4. Every decision, even those made hastily, contributes to the journey we are on today.

14 Nov 2024Day 14: From Taylor Swift Concert to Chaos - 30 days, 30 episodes00:10:00

After a super fun Taylor Swift concert in Miami, my friend Traci and I found ourselves navigating an unexpected adventure that turned into a pretty scary moment. What started as a fun night out quickly spiraled into a torrential downpour in an unfamiliar neighborhood, leaving us soaked and stranded while trying to secure an Uber ride back.

As we stood there, drenched and apprehensive, the kindness of a stranger ultimately saved us, reminding me of the importance of having a solid plan when attending events.

This experience highlighted life's unpredictability and reinforced the need for caution in unfamiliar places.

24 May 2022Honoring Memories, Overcoming Life's Challenges: A Story of Grief, Growth and Empowerment | Matt Gilhooly 01:10:25

In this episode, we flipped the script so I could tell my story. Throughout the first batch of episodes, the guests (and listeners) asked when I would tell my story. So, in this episode, my first guest, Christin Lindley, leads the conversation as I share the pivotal moments that shaped my life and eventually led to The Life Shift podcast.

As a child, Matt faced his mother's sudden and unexpected death. At just 8 years old, he had to grapple with the grief and sadness that comes with such a tragedy. He was also forced to adjust to a new life in Georgia, where he had to start school as "the new kid." Despite all this, he found comfort in his grandmother's love and support. Unfortunately, she eventually got a lung cancer diagnosis, and it became clear that her time was limited. On her 82nd birthday, they had a wonderful celebration surrounded by family. During this time, they were able to have an honest conversation about their relationship and express their gratitude for each other. After she passed away, he took time off from work to process his grief and come out on the other side with clarity. He realized that he had been living his life to other people's expectations, but now he could live authentically for himself. He learned that it's okay to be sad but also happy for the experiences you shared together. Grief is something you never get over, but it's important to process it to move forward in life.

07 Jun 2022It Took Almost Losing a Leg to Chase After a Dream Career | David Toback01:00:12

In this episode, I am joined by my friend David Toback, a voice actor and creator of the GVAA Rate Guide used by non-union voice actors. In our conversation, we talk about how a collection of shifts in his life led him to lean into his passion and be more open to the universe. In addition, we learn how some life-altering shifts introduced him to the idea that he can truly do whatever he wants.

David is a Voice Actor, COO of the GVAA, creator of the GVAA Rate Guide, a rates & performance coach, and one of the industry’s foremost rates experts and advocates. He educates the industry on rates, voice actor value, and mindful practices to run a business from a place of abundance and authority. David is a passionate advocate for fair rates and showing voice actors the value they command. He’s had the pleasure of educating the industry through the GVAA, coaching, webinars, podcasts, and speaking at conferences such as VOcation, V.O. North, and VO Atlanta. David is dedicated to ensuring the stability of voiceover rates through rate and negotiation education and advice. David's journey to VO & the GVAA: David has allowed his creative vision, passion, integrity, positivity, and humility to guide his journey. After a horrific accident in 2014 where he almost lost his right leg, David chose to live life and pursue his dream of voiceover! Originally a student of GVAA, David was mentored by Cristina Milizia. After receiving rates advice and resources, he created a personal rate guide that became the foundation for the GVAA Rate Guide. After working with Cristina to develop and introduce the first version of the Rate Guide, David joined the GVAA staff in 2016 and has become the main driver of the organization’s growth and development. Currently, David serves as the Chief Operations Officer, responsible for managing all aspects of the academy. David was born in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and lived in Orlando for 22 years after attending the University of Central Florida (UCF). Go Knights!! He relocated to LA in June of 2020 (yup! during the Pandemic) to continue his Life & VO journey.

21 Jun 2022Burning Everything to Find True Purpose | Kelly Anderson00:56:28

In this episode, I host my new connection, Kelly Anderson. Kelly and I met through LinkedIn, but as you will notice through the conversation, we found a strong connection through the discussion about her pivotal moments. In this episode, Kelly talks about how she left the corporate world to find her purpose. Her story will resonate with anyone that has ever asked themselves, “Is this all there is to life? The same routine day in and day out?” I loved having this conversation with Kelly and creating new, stronger bonds with people living their purpose.

After navigating several massive life changes during the pandemic, Kelly experienced a soul awakening that set her on the path of fully stepping into her purpose. 28 Jun 2022Sometimes Things Shatter to Reveal Our Authentic Selves | Becca Berkey01:04:29

In this episode, I talk to my friend Becca Berkey about the more recent pivotal moments in her life – the convergence of many nearly simultaneously. In one year, Becca got pregnant at 37, lost two family members on the same day, and then the world shut down due to the pandemic. But the most interesting part about her story is her journey that brought her to live authentically – driven by her values.

My favorite part of this story is how she describes her journey – as a vase with cracks that eventually shattered to be reborn as something new, perhaps a mosaic table. We are a product of our journeys, and I hope many moments of Becca's journey resonate deeply and help someone feel slightly less alone.

Becca Berkey is an interdisciplinary learner, researcher, and educator with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Butler University, a Master’s degree in College Student Personnel from Miami University, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies from Antioch University New England. You can read more about her amazing work on her site, www.beccaberkey.com.

12 Jul 2022Twists and Turns from Corporate Life to Dream Farm Life | Jenna Byrne01:03:28

In this episode, I talk to my friend Jenna about when she was five months pregnant with her first daughter; she and her husband quit their corporate jobs, sold everything they owned, and downsized to a travel trailer to travel the country and learn from other farmers. The twists and turns led them to truly understand what they wanted for their family. Through the conversation, we reminded ourselves that we must grow through all the challenging moments to get where we want to be.

Jenna is a wife and mother to two beautiful girls, ages 5 & 2, and owns The Farm alongside her husband in Sequim, Washington. Eight years ago, she was told she'd need long-term prescription medication to manage her disease after being diagnosed with an autoimmune condition. Looking for other options, she stumbled upon the paleo diet and started learning how changes to her diet could put her condition into remission. This research led her and her husband to find a passion for raising their own livestock & growing their food. After spending three years in Tennessee building their farm, retreat, & micro-bakery business on rented land, they knew they were ready to return to the pacific northwest. They bought their dream farm in December 2021 & are currently selling their pasture-raised eggs, sourdough products, microgreens, fruits, & vegetables from their self-serve farm stand. They will be launching their Whole Health CSA by the Fall of 2022 & will be shipping their farm-fresh, small-batch products to customers all over the country. www.iiiriverskitchen.com

19 Aug 2022UPDATE #3: More Recordings, New Equipment, and Episode Previews00:16:02

In this update episode, I wanted to share exciting news about starting to record new episodes again and some equipment upgrades. I also wanted to share a few previews of the upcoming episodes through October 18, 2022.

In this episode, I discuss:

  • The Life Shift's new recording equipment
  • Working on new audio intro music with my cousin
  • New subscription models - ad-free and early release
  • Resuming recording new episodes for release starting 10/25 - initially looking for 10 to close out 2022, but interested in getting stories recorded for 2023 too.
  • Request to spread the word to potential guests
  • Rate and Review on Apple Podcasts

Upcoming Episode Preview:

Noelle Cheaib - Moving to another country can be so exciting. But what is it like finding "home" in a new country right when the world shuts down?

Ashley Pereira - Our childhood traumas can shape so much. Eventually, we might break, but what blooms after is so very beautiful in this story.

Dr. J. Rodriguez - Finding a mentor is a blessing. But getting to fulfill a mentor's final wish is a life-changing thing.

Heather Torres - Perfect life, right? Think again. This story shows resilience and finding the real meaning of life after a sudden, unexpected divorce.

Hondu Knight - Addiction is real. It can be deadly. But, if you are lucky, you find the space and grace to recover and inspire others.

Cory Keith - Retiring in your 30s from public service can turn into diving into your own rules and running a successful business.

Erica Kelly - Infertility's ups and downs, and the surprises of discovering that one of your unborn TWINS may have special needs.

Jenny Wood - Why not? Take risks because what if they work out? This episode is a fun story of chasing a stranger off a subway train (in a good way).

Rob Cressy - Literally, how positive affirmations and thoughts can save someone's life just as the lights are fading.

Thank you for being a part of this community of storytelling!

21 Oct 2022BONUS EPISODE - Wrap Up for First 32 Episodes00:34:10

To celebrate the end of season one, I compiled a collection of the final questions for each of the first 32 episodes of The Life Shift Podcast. I know that many listeners like to hear how the guest answers the final question.

Typically the questions are:

  • "If you could go back to the version of you right before your pivotal moment, what would you say?"
  • "If someone listening is in a similar position, what would you want to tell them?
  • "What have you learned from this moment?"

Thank you for being a part of this journey. Stay tuned for Season 2, debuting October 25, 2022!

1. The importance of early cancer detection, especially for those with a family history of the disease.

2. The story of a woman who overcame cancer after being diagnosed in her 40s.

3. The life-changing impact of a cancer diagnosis and treatment.

This is Tory Campbell's story...

Tory Campbell was born in Incheon, South Korea, and abandoned at birth. She was adopted by a Caucasian couple in Connecticut and raised there. When she was 36, she got into CrossFit and made great friends. Then, at 40, she had her annual woman's exam, and a lump was found. After some tests, it was determined to be cancerous, and she underwent treatment. A year later, she was cancer free and moved to San Diego. While shaped by her upbringing, her values are not necessarily what her parents wanted. She currently lives estranged from her adoptive family in San Diego as a direct result of her cancer diagnosis.

1. Robin Hofmann's experience as a parent of a child with autism and how it has helped her in her career

2. Her experience making her gluten-free recipes and how this led to her production of a baking show

3. Robin's experience making her first movie during the COVID-19 pandemic and how this led to a life shift for her into the world of filmmaking

"Making films is my passion and my purpose."

Robin Hofmann was always interested in film and TV but was discouraged from pursuing it as a career by her stepfather. Instead, she got a degree in psychology and spent 27 years working with people with disabilities. When Robin could no longer film her baking show due to Covid, she decided to write and produce her own movie. She has found her true passion in filmmaking and loves every minute of it.

Robin Hofmann is an award-winning writer, director, and producer. She started producing content to spread awareness and highlight individuals who may not have had a voice otherwise. Before getting into film, Robin earned her degree in Psychology and spent 27 years working with individuals with disabilities. Her film journey began with an online baking show focusing on gluten-free recipes and spreading awareness of disabilities. Shortly after, she began interviewing “ordinary people with extraordinary stories” on her online talk show, Chat with Me. These experiences brought her to the art of filmmaking, where she began writing, producing, and directing independent films. https://hoffysheartproductions.com/

06 Dec 2022From Public to Private: This Teacher's Story of Finding Fulfillment | Jackie Scully 00:59:13

Jackie Scully reflects on her decision to leave her teaching job in Hawaii during the recession to return to Pennsylvania, only to find the job market for teachers just as difficult.

"I was kicking myself. I was like, what did I do? This is not the life I want to live.”

Jackie is a former public school teacher who now teaches at a private school. She has experience teaching in the public school system in Hawaii and Pennsylvania.

In this episode, you will learn the following:

-The frustrations Jackie experienced with the public school system, specifically during the No Child Left Behind era

-The impact of the recession on the public school system in Hawaii and the consequent mass exodus of teachers

-The challenges Jackie faced in trying to find a teaching job in the public school system after moving back to Pennsylvania

Jackie went to public schools and always felt quite lost in them. So she went to college, became a teacher, and then worked in the public school system in Hawaii. Although she loved Hawaii, when the recession hit, things changed. Teachers' salaries were cut, and many of her friends, who were also teachers, left the state. She also made the difficult decision to leave, moving back in with her parents in Pennsylvania. She couldn't find a teaching job there, so she moved to Maryland with her then-fiancé. She finally found a teaching job at a private school in Wilmington, DE. It was a much different experience than teaching in public schools, and she loved it.

Jackie Scully is an experienced History/Psychology Teacher, Creator/Host of The Teacher Story, which features her own story and teacher interviews. She is also the Co-founder of The Teacher Circle LinkedIn group, a global community to support teachers and others in education. She aims to elevate teacher voices and others in education and put them at the forefront of the education reform movement.

20 Dec 2022Charting a Career Path Against the Grain and Bringing Stories to Life | Wayne Partello01:06:43

After being forced to abandon his dream of becoming a police officer, Wayne Partello, a young, ambitious entrepreneur, is confronted with a daunting challenge: to prove himself without a college degree in the cutthroat world of media and professional sports.

"You have control of your story. It's what you want to be known for, and you have control of that." - Wayne Partello.

Wayne Partello is the co-founder and CEO of CUENTO Marketing, a marketing and brand consultancy based in San Diego. He is passionate about helping brands determine their story and bring it to life.

Wayne Partello learned to make decisions with purpose and tailor his life to what he wanted to do. He wanted to be a police officer, but after the police academy, he moved to Boston to become a DJ. As a requirement, he returned to Florida to work as a police officer. But when the city was restructured, Wayne realized he needed to make a change and decided to go to a trade school. While his friends were graduating college, Wayne felt the pressure to have a career but eventually ended up with the real-world experience that guided the rest of his career.

In this episode, we discuss:

1. Exploring the power of real-world experience, as opposed to a degree, to achieve success.

2. Examining the importance of re-evaluating career paths to find true purpose and fulfillment.

After over a decade of media experience followed by over a decade of NFL and MLB front-office experience, Wayne Partello decided it was time for a change. He needed to scratch the entrepreneurial itch that had been following him since his teenage years, but this time he wanted to use all the experiences he had gained through his journey to help brands identify who they wanted to be and how to make that a reality.

This allowed Liam to apply for last-minute places on courses that couldn't be filled by universities through the normal application process.

Liam shares a few other instances where a little late-night curiosities and impulses led to big changes in his life. Through hard work and determination, he was able to find his place in the world.

17 Jan 2023Finding Your Passion: A Teacher's Journey to Discovery | Lorraine Connell00:59:10

After ten years of teaching chemistry and dreading a future of 25-35 years of the same job, Lorraine Connell applied for a middle management position, only to be met with disappointment when she was not chosen. Without waning support from the administration, Lorraine had to innovate to find a way to enjoy teaching and challenge her students.

"It was five years later where something landed in my lap, and I felt that same excitement that I had felt that first week that I told you, where I burst into tears. So my mentor was moving on, and he was teaching a class called Peer leadership. And so it was student leadership development, and kids were actually given course credit to learn leadership skills. And this, in addition to my chemistry class, just changed everything for me. I felt really connected again. I was happy."

Lorraine was a successful chemistry teacher for many years and loved her job. She connected with her students and was passionate about her subject matter. However, she felt it was time to move on to something else. After applying for a middle management position, Lorraine was devastated when she was not chosen.

For the next five years, Lorraine felt less and less supported by her administration. In 2018, however, she was given the opportunity to teach a student leadership class. This allowed her to make more authentic connections with her students and rediscover her love for teaching.

Lorraine is now the owner of Peers not Fears, LLC, and a veteran educator of over 20 years. She works with schools and youth-serving organizations to coach educators and students and is the host of the podcast Education Unimagined. In 2022, Lorraine left her full-time chemistry teaching job to work with interested schools, families, and communities to develop more equitable access and empowerment of students.

Lorraine's story is an inspiring one. It's proof that making a career change is possible and that it can lead to amazing opportunities. To learn more about Lorraine's story and hear from current and past students about their educational experiences, check out Education Unimagined Podcast. To learn more about Peers not Fears, LLC and their work, visit www.peers-not-fears.com.

Don't let fear hold you back from making a change - you never know what opportunities might come your way. So take a chance and make the shift.

29 Dec 2022REPLAY: Honoring Memories, Overcoming Life's Challenges: A Story of Grief, Growth And Empowerment | Matt Gilhooly 01:12:17

This is a REPLAY of episode 11, launched in May 2022. I wanted to share this episode again for new subscribers that have yet to hear my story and the WHY behind The Life Shift Podcast.

During this time, they had an honest conversation about their relationship and expressed gratitude for each other. After she passed away, he took time to process his grief and come out on the other side with clarity. He realized that he had been living his life to other people's expectations, but now he could live authentically for himself. He learned that it's okay to be sad but also happy for the experiences you shared together. Grief is something you never get over, but it's important to process it to move forward in life.

“I know I was reawakened, you know, by this legacy of dad and moving forward in the future. Uh, you asked about emotional intelligence Matt, I could say I didn't really have much of it. I was able to read people very, very well. I was good at sales. I was good at business, but being able to feel process emotion was not a strength. I could read the room well. I didn't process things. I just, I just buried them.”

Matt is an entrepreneur and corporate veteran in sales, coaching, recruiting, leadership, and sales management. He has coached high-performance individuals and Teams for 8 years with ProAdvisorCoach and has led dozens of offsite retreats and conferences. He is best known for his integrity and highly energetic and enthusiastic personality. After losing his father, Matt also faced a freak zipline accident that could have taken away his ability to work. However, he used this moment and transformed it into teaching, coaching, and speaking to teams and companies while recovering. This was a defining moment in his career, and he credits the support of his family and the preparation of his mindset for his success.

31 Jan 2023The Butterfly Effect: How Small Decisions Lead to Unbelievable Opportunities | Josh Painter00:59:58

In this week’s episode, Josh Painter shares his inspiring journey of taking risks and how it eventually paid off. And how he has found a way to create the best version of himself ever, going against living the life that others expect of them.

“I get a text from the office manager, and it says do you want to work with some investors in San Diego? And this is just a concept that I talked about in the book and sometimes you just say yes to things and then figure it out later and you don't always have to know the reason or where it's going, but for whatever reason, I said yes, I remember thinking of all these questions and just said, just figure it out, yes. And he goes, okay, great, they'll be in the office on Thursday, you're going to meet with them, and I was like, oh, that escalated quickly.”

Josh talks about the crucial moments that altered his life, like taking a job working at the jail at 21, investing in real estate after a shocking phone call, and embracing opportunities even if he didn't feel ready (say YES!). He also stresses the importance of hiring coaches to help you reach your goals. Tune in now to hear Josh's story and learn more about the power of taking chances!

Josh founded the Best Version Ever community after realizing that most people live a life that others expect of them, not a life true to themselves. Unfortunately, he was living this same life, moving from one job to the next, barely getting by, and almost losing everything at one point.

Since then, Josh has built and sold a successful real estate company, started a charity organization, and lives his Best Version Ever by helping others crush their goals and reach their full potential in all areas of life.

20 Jan 2023Preview: Patreon Bonus Episode #4: Kelly Anderson - After the Recording00:06:02

I wanted to celebrate a milestone on the Patreon page with everyone and share a clip from one of the Patreon Bonus Episodes this week. The Patreon is growing, and we just hit 15 subscribers. This is a milestone because I created a t-shirt giveaway where once I hit 15 subscribers, I would draw a random name for every five new subscribers and send that person a Life Shift Podcast t-shirt (one of two designs) I created.

So, one or two people will soon receive their very own The Life Shift Podcast T-shirt.

I wanted to share this clip from Kelly Anderson's bonus episode recording. At the end of each bonus episode, I like to ask the guests if they have anything to share with someone considering sharing their story with someone (or the show) and the value it could provide.

So in this clip, you will hear Kelly Anderson's response.

Thank you for the support along the way. If you want to help support the show and join the Patreon, please check out www.thelifeshiftpodcast.com/join

21 Feb 2023Facing Tomorrow: Transforming Grief into Strength and Wisdom | John Kelley01:07:55

**Please note that this episode may be triggering for some listeners. Take care as you listen.**

John Kelley shares his story of loss, resilience, and perseverance in this week's episode. John's story is one of tragedy and triumph, and his incredible journey inspires many. In this episode, John talks about his father's advice (“Tomorrow is not promised”), his father's untimely and sudden death, and the tragic passing of his mother.

“Sometimes, he would have those mind-blowing philosophical conversations. You know, like I am because I am, and I can think; therefore, I am not like he would bring these weird things up that he's read or heard of in the past. And one of the things that he would always say was much simpler than all of that, and it was tomorrow is not promised. And he's told me that from a young age, it's something that I've always heard. It's just not something that I had understood yet, and it was in an instant when I was told he was gone; it all of a sudden was a lesson learned of Damn Tomorrow is not promised.”

Here are the main takeaways from this episode:

  • Despite the immense grief and loss John experienced, he persevered and found a way to honor his parents and build a successful career. He used the pain and suffering to fuel him and create a life of purpose and meaning.
  • John found solace in his friendships and relationships with those around him. He leaned on them for support and guidance during his difficult times.
  • He believes in the power of his story and how it can help others who are going through similar experiences.

John Kelley is a Texas firefighter, entrepreneur, and marketing advisor. As a business major, small business owner, and marketing advisor for Beefy Marketing, he has become very familiar with entrepreneurs' daily challenges. Bringing his humor and love for helping others to The Small Business Origins Podcast, he dives deep into what makes each business tick, helping bring useful information to other small business owners. Learning all about a business and putting them into the spotlight gives listeners a reason to visit each business featured and give them a try.
