23 Jun 2021Pirates and Death Row with Wong Siew Hong of Eldan Law - Episode 1600:49:15

Send us a text

In Episode 16 of the Legal Genie Podcast, your host, Lara Quie, is in conversation with prominent Singapore lawyer, Wong Siew Hong, Partner at Eldan Law LLP in Singapore.

Siew Hong read law at the National University of Singapore and was called to the Bar in 1988. Three years later, he heard the call of the wild and became a private investigator, chasing pirates who made and sold fake products - not only in Singapore but all over Asia.  It was the greatest time of his life. Sadly, he was urged to give it up and get a ‘respectable job’ and so he returned to legal practice in 1993 and has been putting his nose to the grindstone ever since.

As a partner at Eldan Law, Siew Hong’s work against the fake goods trade continues to this day as he still practices Intellectual Property law whenever he can, specialising in product security and anti-counterfeiting.

He also practices criminal litigation work, and it was a chance encounter with an elderly lady in the then Subordinate Courts in 1989 that ignited his passion to fight for the underdog, the disadvantaged and the disenfranchised.

Siew Hong has appeared in over 30 capital cases in the High Court and scored a few wins, including the recent landmark Beh Chew Boo case in the Singapore Court of Appeal involving the acquittal of a Malaysian accused of drug trafficking.

He has received a long service award for his work as a member of the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Criminal Law Advisory Committee.

In his spare time, Siew Hong is an orchid enthusiast who has discovered several new orchid species, including one named after him, and is an internationally accredited orchid judge.

Siew Hong shares:

·         His humble beginnings in Singapore and less than stellar academic record.

·         His switch from engineering to the arts, which gave him the grades he needed to read law at NUS.

·         His early days as a private investigator chasing counterfeiters.

·         His return to a sensible job as a lawyer doing IP work for Louis Vuitton.

·         How an old lady inspired him to fight for the underdog.

·         The interesting case of a man who had Darier Disease.

·         The recent case of Mr. Beh Chew Boo and his lucky escape from the death penalty.

09 Sep 2021Rise of the ALSP with Titus Rahiri, CEO of KorumLegal - Episode 2100:41:03

Send us a text

In Episode 21 of the Legal Genie podcast, your host, Lara Quie, is in conversation with Titus Rahiri, CEO and Founder of Alternative Legal Services Provider (ALSP), KorumLegal.

Titus is based in Hong Kong.  A senior corporate and commercial lawyer with over 20 years of experience in Europe and the Asia Pacific, he has led legal teams in New Zealand listed FTSE and NASDAQ listed companies, as well as high growth and unicorn businesses.

Titus has experience in technology, digital, and e-commerce across various industries and has a keen interest in the legal transformation space and the business of law

In this episode, Titus discusses his motivations for becoming a lawyer, and how he ended up where he is today – the CEO of a “NewLaw” entity called KorumLegal.

Titus shares his upbringing in New Zealand as part of a large working-class Maori family. He was the first in his family to go to university and struggled with being a minority and feeling like a “fish out of water”.

Having a “challenger” mindset, he chose a modern law school, which was less popular with the more established law firms but managed to do his training with Russel McVeagh, a large New Zealand law firm.

At work, Titus crossed paths with both good and terrible mentors, eventually making the move in-house, to get the chance to see the full life cycle of deals and the commercial drivers behind them.

Like many antipodeans, Titus moved to the United Kingdom, where he worked at Sky, a media company, and later Expedia, where he was exposed to numerous opportunities, including a sponsored MBA, leadership of Hotels.com, and a posting in Asia.

Titus created KorumLegal to cater for the gaps he observed in the middle of the legal industry pyramid. While law firms still occupy the top section of very specialized expert legal advisory, he believes that the middle section is ripe for disruption by in-house legal, technology, and new law models.

KorumLegal has several products providing flexible talent, which help to solve their clients’ pain points and support in-house legal teams from MNCs to start-ups, especially in the areas of technology, media, telecoms, corporate and broader financial services.

Titus shares his advice for lawyers in private practice and describes the paradigm shift of power from the firms to the in-house teams as a consequence of the GFC.

I hope you enjoy the episode!

To learn more about Titus, you can find him on LinkedIn and connect with him here, check out KorumLegal’s website here, or get in touch with him at titus.rahiri@korumlegal.com.

[00:02:39] Niti Nadarajah: Absolutely. So, I actually, for the first six years of my life moved around quite a lot. I was born in Scotland, which I love to tell people because it really surprises them because they're like, what, Scotland?

[00:02:53] Like. Yeah. So, my dad was studying in Scotland at the time. So, they happened to be there. So, we spent two [00:03:00] years there. So, not very long. And then we moved from there to England. We spent a bit of time in England, a bit of time in Abu Dhabi. A year in India, where my sister was born. And then my dad actually decided that, so, my parents are from India and had immigrated from India, I think in the seventies, sixties or seventies.

[00:03:19] And my dad had decided that he wasn't a hundred percent at home in the UK. There was just something about it that didn't quite feel comfortable. And so, he wanted to see what Aus

15 Oct 2021Superyachts, Humility and Plumbing with John Leonida - Episode 2300:46:35

Send us a text

In Episode 23 of The Legal Genie Podcast, your host, Lara Quie is in conversation with John Leonida. Until his retirement from law in 2020, John was a partner at Clyde & Co in London, where he specialized in international shipping and marine work and established a niche area, which he branded the "Superyacht Group."

His clients were either shipping entrepreneurs, operators in the oil support industry or high net worth individuals, builders, and designers of some of the world's most luxurious superyachts. In September 2020, John joined LP Squared Limited to provide board level advice to owners, builders, family offices, and superyacht stakeholders on the more commercial and strategic aspects of the superyacht industry.

He is currently undertaking a PhD in maritime history on the culture and social impact of yachts and superyachts between 1918 and 2018.

In this episode, John discusses his upbringing, his career, how he eventually moved into a legal career, and what he feels are crucial values lawyers should have.

Growing up in a working-class family, he initially embarked on an economics degree, before making the cross over to a legal career where he eventually settled in the maritime practice at Clyde & Co where he stayed for 23 years.

John discusses the difficulties he faced as a junior lawyer with extensive experience in the finance space which sparked tensions over disagreements with more senior lawyers. Despite this, his previous experience in personal relations benefited him.

He eventually made the superyacht practice his own, getting an accelerated bump to partnership as a result of the firm’s trust in him. John goes on to talk about some of the common problems he faced in the industry, especially whilst dealing with such high-value clientele.

John then moves on to his retirement the previous year. He discusses the reasons surrounding his retirement and comments and how some lawyers face difficulties in retirement as their legal profession made up such an integral part of their identity.

He talks about how the profession has changed over his years in practice as well as some of the traditional values in the legal industry that have taken a backseat in recent years.

John concludes by raising three points he feels are important for all lawyers.

The first, espoused by his former mentor, was to always be humble.

The second, is a rich vocabulary, something that John feels is fundamental to convey your understanding of the law to your clients. John mentions some tips he has given trainees before that have helped with their drafting of the law.

Finally, a potential shocker to some, the understanding that lawyers are the “plumbers” of the world of commerce and should play the facilitative role in the background.

I hope you enjoy this episode!

03 Nov 2021Crafty Counsel with Benjamin White - Episode 2500:43:09

Send us a text

In Episode 25 of the Legal Genie podcast, your host, Lara Quie, is in conversation with Benjamin White. Ben spent six years as a corporate lawyer at Clifford Chance before moving in-house with the Global Fashion Group.

In 2017, he founded Crafty Counsel, a platform that allows legal counsel access to online learning and development via a series of videos recorded by specialists in the area. It is also a community of lawyers eager to socialize, network, mentor, and share experiences

In this episode, Ben discusses his slightly more unconventional career path and experiences living abroad as well as how Crafty Counsel came about.

Going against the grain, Ben decided to put his training offer with Clifford Chance on hold for a couple of years to pursue his interests, taking up a post-graduate course in Chinese history. He spent six months at Beijing University and returned to China sometime later as a Clifford Chance trainee.

When he returned to the law, he initially intended to go into litigation, but relealised that he would be a better fit for the corporate practice after starting his training there. He advises younger lawyers to keep an open mind and to try something to find out if they actually do enjoy it.

Later, he was given the chance to get seconded to a client, where he got a taste of being an in-house counsel. Finding the experience stimulating, and to delve more into his interests in the start-up and venture capital frontier, he took the chance to move on to the Global Fashion Group as in-house counsel. Ben commented that at that time, venture capital and start-up work was harder to come by at a large firm like Clifford Chance.

Ben goes on to discuss some of the key differences between his experience at a large law firm in contrast to his in-house, highlighting the sense of control that he gained after the move.

Ben was then at a crossroads between accepting positions at prominent VC funds as their first internal counsel or moving on to Crafty Counsel which he had been working on and mentions why he chose to move forward with Crafty Counsel.

Ben also highlights his experience as the inspiration for Crafty Counsel. In-house counsels usually face a more ambiguous environment with structures and environments varying significantly across companies as opposed to the private practice where career options are relatively more straightforward.

Finding this an underserved community, he decided to put his mind to it to create a community for support and the exchange of information, practices, and situations. The demand for more community-based events happened just as COVID hit, prompting a shift in focus from more technical topics to more practical matters.

Crafty Counsel has some events planned for the next few months and is looking forward to the possibility of in-person events, whilst at the same time maintaining digital meetups – which have successfully connected people from all over the worl

Send us a text

In Episode 26 of the Legal Genie Podcast with your host, Lara Quie, is in conversation with a unique guest who has been in the legal industry for half a century, David Grief.

David is probably the world’s most experienced international modern barrister’s clerk.

He was the senior clerk for 38 years for Essex Court Chambers, one of the pre-eminent commercial sets in London and then moved to establish the first London-style chambers in Singapore.

David started visiting Singapore regularly in the 1980s and has recently opened his own consultancy here called David Grief International Consultancy.

David shares his life story from unaccomplished school leaver at 17 to a chance encounter with a Queen's Counsel that led to a life of flying private aircraft and driving Aston Martins.

He describes his early days as a barrister's clerk and how he rose through the ranks to achieve the role of senior clerk at Essex Court Chambers, "the best set in the land".

David talks about being blessed with a good memory and a genuine interest in people, which have been key to his success as a senior clerk.

His love of travel and commercial air travel in particular, saw him come to Singapore and other far flung places. Having established good friendships and seen an opportunity to become the first senior barrister's clerk in Singapore, David started a new life here in 2018.

He believes that if you don't ask, you don't get, and that nothing is impossible.

I hope that you enjoy the conversation.

24 Jan 2022YouTuber for Lawyers with Angela Vorpahl - Episode 2701:03:32

Send us a text

In Episode 27 of the Legal Genie Podcast, your host, Lara Quie, is in conversation with Angela Vorpahl.

Angela is an American intellectual property and human rights attorney turned YouTube channel host and creator of the “Law School Master Plan Strategy” course designed to help law students master their time, compete for top grades and position themselves for their dream job out of law school.

She was raised in Texas, where she also went to university, and later passed the bar.

After interning as a judicial clerk, she decided to sit the New York bar exam and moved to New York, where she became an associate practising IP law.

She was there for 5 years before it struck her that she didn't have a passion for IP law, and that working on human rights cases might be a more fulfilling use of her legal training.

Quite by chance, she discovered that YouTube did not only offer entertainment, but also educational content.

She soon started to create videos on all the things she wishes she had known before starting as a junior lawyer.

Her lawyer nature made it hard for her to press upload to her channel, but after a year, she finally went live with her channel.

She noticed that the most pupular videos and questions related to people thinking of doing law and going to law school rather than lawyers already in practice.

This realisation made her create her  “Law School Master Plan Strategy” course.

Angela shares her journey from Texas to Times Square, to full-time YouTuber.

I hope that you will enjoy the episode.
