28 Feb 2022How to Be Confident When You Lack Confidence in Your Capability [073]00:20:48

How can you be confident when you lack confidence in your capability? One of the realities for many emerging leaders, especially high-achieving people or perfectionists, is that it’s a challenge to feel confident in your capability.

You may have a high-level of experience, you may be educated or have received specialised training, but despite all of that you still lack confidence in your capability at work. You convince yourself you’re not intelligent enough, you’re not competent enough or you’re not good enough.

Does this sound familiar? If you can relate to any of what you’ve read so far, then this episode is for you.

I talk about how you can feel confident when you lack confidence in your capability. I talk about:

  • How to identify whether it’s Impostor Syndrome, or not.
  • Comparing yourself to others - when it’s good and when it’s bad.
  • Dealing with your inner self-talk which is almost always negative.
  • How to remember your achievements when you’re always looking for the next goal to achieve.

There are a lot of nuggets of wisdom in this episode from start to finish. I know you’ll get a lot from it.

31 Jul 2022Sound More Decisive When You Speak (Do THIS!) [078]00:18:37

Being indecisive or sounding indecisive when you speak is a common hurdle for many emerging leaders. Most of the time, it’s because you’re waiting for approval, permission or you’re fearful of saying the wrong thing. But when you sound indecisive when you speak, especially at work, it makes you look like you lack confidence in yourself - which in turn makes people question your capability at work. Sounding decisive when you speak is an important skill you must develop, and in this episode, you will learn how.

I share with you the one major shift you need to make in your communication to sound more decisive (and this shift is extremely easy!). Then, I share with you two case studies so you can see the indecisive communication in action, understand what is wrong with it, and learn how to change it. You’ll learn what you should say instead to sound more decisive.

By the end of this episode, you will have a number of communication tools and sentences that you can use to sound more decisive at work, and ultimately, boost the level of confidence you convey to others.

30 Sep 2022Why Your Team Doesn’t Respect You (and what to do about it) [079]00:14:10

As a leader, how can you get your team to respect you? This is a common question that many leaders ask when they begin with a new team or begin a leadership position for the very first time. Why is this important? If your team don’t respect you, they won’t follow you. If they don’t follow you,  you can’t make the impact you want as a leader.

An incredible amount of your job as a leader requires the support and power of the people in your team. I bet you thought it was the other way around! To some extent it is. But you rely on your team for so much. If they don’t respect you, they won’t be there to support and help you achieve your goals.

This episode will share five reasons why your team doesn’t respect you, and I also share strategies to help you overcome this lack of respect.

Listen in on the podcast platform of your choice! I hope you enjoy this episode.

31 Oct 20225 Myths About Leadership That Are Holding You Back [080]00:18:56

Over my time as a leadership coach, I’ve heard from many emerging leaders what appear (to them) to be very valid reasons as to why they’re not ready for leadership. They might say, “I don’t know all I need to know yet”, “I’m not extroverted enough”, or “I don’t have the title of a leader”. These are all myths, or mis-truths, about leadership that WILL hold you back. They keep you playing small. They make you believe that you’re not capable enough to be a leader.

The reality is, anyone can be a leader. But in order to get there, you must overcome these mental hurdles that are in your way. So in this episode, I delve deep into five common myths that could be holding you back from a leadership position. I also share simple strategies to help you get out of these blocks.

30 Nov 2022How to Articulate Complicated Thoughts Clearly [081]00:19:06

One of the ways in which we can distinguish average leaders from great leaders is their ability to communicate. Their ability to explain complicated topics in a clear and articulate way. You might think that people who speak in an articulate way, were born like that. But as you’ll discover in this episode, it’s more likely that they’ve been trained - trained to speak in a way that is articulate and eloquent.

Personally, it has been my lifelong mission to be more articulate when I speak. And through this journey, I’ve discovered a 3-step process that has helped me immensely to improve my communication. It’s a process that anybody can put into action, even you. It’s based on the concept that “our speech is a reflection of our thinking”. This means that in order for us to speak clearly, we need to ensure our thoughts are clear and structured first. Once your thoughts are clear in your mind, it will be much easier for you to communicate those thoughts in a clear and articulate way.

If you’ve ever felt that you get your thoughts muddled, you don’t make sense when you speak, or you can’t express what is on your mind in a clear way, then this episode is for you! Discover my 3-step process to articulating your thoughts well in this episode.

30 Sep 2023How I Learned to Speak With More Clarity [090]00:14:36

For a long time, I felt that I didn’t speak with clarity. I would jump from thought to thought without any intelligent connection. I wouldn’t finish my thoughts properly leaving people with an unfinished thought. Overall, my communication was jumbled and all over the place. I realised that I needed to learn how to speak with more clarity. After spending a long time researching and trialling different methods, I narrowed it down to seven things that helped me the most.

In this episode, I take you through the method that has helped me to speak with more clarity. It includes:

  • Expanding your vocabulary
  • Removing unnecessary information
  • Conveying one thought at a time
  • Keeping the main point in mind
  • Reading to improve your speaking
  • Writing to improve your speaking
  • Learning from interviews and documentaries

08 Oct 2024Master These 7 People Skills to Become a Great Leader [093]00:29:20

In this episode, I share 7 people skills you need to become a great manager or leader. Aspiring managers or leaders who show a high level of technical skill are often seen as competent enough to get promoted into senior levels. However, what often happens with these types of skill-based promotions is that while the individual has the technical skills necessary for the job, they often lack the people skills they need to manage and lead well. And this can lead them to underperform in their new position or for their boss to question whether they’re the right person for the job. I created this episode to help you avoid this dilemma.

Keeping your head down and doing a good job at work is no longer enough to get noticed and promoted. This is a roadblock that prevents many emerging leaders from climbing up and rising to the level of success they desire.

24 Feb 2020[002] Why You Need to Think About Leadership Development Early in Your Career00:24:17

Many emerging leaders don’t think about their leadership development until something dramatic has happened to them in their career. Maybe they’ve been overlooked for a promotion or perhaps they don’t receive the high-level projects they need to prove themselves.

These critical events push people to start thinking about at their leadership development. Have you experienced critical events like these?

When you’re early in your career, things go smoothly for you. You don’t have much responsibility and most of your effort goes toward learning the job. But at some stage, you might reach a breaking point. You might start to notice obstacles or blocks appearing in your career journey.

It’s at this point, you’re likely to understand how important leadership development is in your career and wished you’d invested in it earlier.

In this episode, I go into five reasons why you need to think about leadership development early in your career so you can be ready before a leadership opportunity lands in your lap.

In this episode, I discuss:

  • How people wait for a critical event to happen before they think about their leadership development.
  • A whole other area of your professional development (your soft skills) that is critically important in leadership.
  • How learning about leadership early in your career helps you advance faster.
  • How learning about leadership development can help you differentiate yourself and stand out.
  • How bosses are risk averse and they need to see you demonstrate leadership capability before they promote you.
  • You need to have your own interests in mind for your career journey because your boss may not.
  • How Jack Welch, ex-CEO of General Electric, stood out from the pack to become a great leader.

24 Feb 2020[003] How to Start Building a Strong Leadership Brand in 202000:20:40

You’ve no doubt heard of personal branding. Emerging leaders need something stronger than that. They need to build a leadership brand so they can be recognised as somebody with leadership potential.

When you’re aiming for a leadership position, you need to package and market yourself as a leader. How do you do that? How do you create a leadership brand?

There are a number of touch points you need to think about. These are the points from which your audience will gather clues or information about who you are and what you stand for.

These are the touch points that your boss will use to decide whether you’re leadership material, or not.

So it’s critical you get them right!

In this episode, I help you define your leadership brand so you know what you’re aiming for, and then I delve into three touch points so you can start creating your leadership brand for 2020.

In this episode, I discuss:

  • Why I prefer the term, “leadership branding”.
  • How you have control over these touch points.
  • How to define your leadership brand and I share with you a quick activity that you can do on your own.
  • Why your outfit is an important touch point to think about.
  • How your nonverbal communication is important.
  • The importance of your verbal and nonverbal communication being in-sync.
  • How to overcome getting your thoughts muddled and clearly convey your thoughts in business meetings.

Resources talked about in this episode:

08 Mar 2020[004] Q&A Episode - How Can I Get Noticed and Rewarded for the Great Work That I Do?00:26:47

This is the first Q&A Episode for The Leadership Pod. The question for this episode is, “How Can I Get Noticed and Rewarded for the Great Work That I Do?”. This question came to me from one of my Udemy students.

Being overlooked, feeling under-appreciated, working harder and longer than everybody else but getting no reward for it, is a common issue for many emerging leaders. So I knew that this would be the perfect issue to talk about in the first Q&A episode.

In this episode, I first take a deeper look at this common issue for emerging leaders, then give some solutions you can try, and then talk about what you can expect to happen when you solve this issue at work.

I hope this episode is going to be helpful for you. If you've ever felt overlooked for the hard work that you do in the office, you'll get a lot out of this episode!

In this episode, I discuss:

  • An important mindset shift you need to make when you transition from junior to senior level in a company.
  • How your people skill will help you get noticed and rewarded.
  • How to talk about what you’ve achieved in your team meetings to help others see your contribution.
  • How to have a one-on-one with your boss so they know, and cannot deny, the hard work you’ve been putting in.
  • How to approach this issue in your performance evaluations.
  • How taking action makes you feel that you’re more in control of your job and life!
  • How assertive communication is the style of communication you need to have these types of conversations.
  • Information about the Assertive Communication Skills Masterclass on Udemy.

16 Mar 2020[005] 5 Reasons Why You Should Speak Up In Meetings00:28:20

One of the biggest barriers to building visibility that I see with my clients is not speaking up in meetings, especially when they have an idea, opinion or suggestion to share with the room.

This is such a shame because meetings are the easiest way for any professional to build visibility. But for a couple of reasons that I share with you in this podcast episode, emerging leaders more often that not, hold back.

My aim with the episode is to encourage you to speak up more in meetings by sharing with you five great reasons why you should!

In this episode, I discuss:

  • How lack of confidence can cause you to hold back in meetings.
  • How not all corporate cultures support people talking freely in meetings.
  • Why keeping quiet shows you have nothing to contribute.
  • How people can start questioning why you’re even in the room!
  • Why meetings are easy and FREE way to increase your visibility.
  • How speaking up can get you closer to high-level projects.
  • Why you need to speak up to position yourself as a leader.

23 Mar 2020[006] How to Reinvent Your Leadership Brand When You Get Promoted00:22:42

As you rise higher in your career, you will need to reinvent your leadership brand. This can happen when you move up to the next level, for example from manager to senior manager, or if you move to a different industry or start your own business.

Basically anytime there’s going to be a transition, you will need to reflect on your leadership brand and identify whether it’s going to serve you in your new position.

Having a leadership brand that’s not up-to-date can hold you back and keep you away from your career goals.

In this episode I talk about five things you need to think about when reinventing your leadership brand when you get promoted.

In this episode, I discuss:

  • How reinventing your leadership brand is a gradual process.
  • How to identify the elements of your leadership brand that still serve you.
  • How to identify elements that no longer serve you and are holding you back.
  • How to re-define your leadership brand with a technique I use with my clients.
  • How to communicate your new leadership brand.
  • How to monitor the results.

29 Mar 2020[007] Top Soft Skills for Future Leaders00:35:01

Many new managers aren’t equipped with the soft skills they need to lead a team. They’re usually promoted based on the level of technical skill they have, or the number of years of experiences they have.

They’re thrown into the role of a leader, but they don’t know anything about how to lead a team. They have good technical skills, but they don’t have good people management skill.

This is where the breakdown occurs. But it doesn’t have to be this way. In this episode, I talk you through the top 5 soft skills that you need to know about if you want to succeed as a new leader.

Listen to this episode on Apple podcasts here [link]

In this episode, I discuss:

  • How the world of work is changing with AI, and how people management skill is becoming increasingly important.
  • The top 5 soft skills you need to know about as an emerging leader.
  • How communication is important for leaders - both talking and listening.
  • How collaboration and developing good relationships is becoming more important.
  • How critical thinking and problem solving is one of the top soft skills you need to know about.
  • How Emotional Intelligence is what separates great leaders from managers.
  • How change-agility is paramount in today’s business world.

Knowing how to have difficult conversations in the office when you don’t like conflict is a common issue for emerging leaders. You may need to give somebody negative feedback. In order to have difficult conversations with employees, you need to approach it with strategy and confidence. In this episode, I share with you strategies you can implement to have difficult conversations with people in the office. These strategies all revolve assertive communication.

  • In what situations do leaders need to have difficult conversations?
  • Giving negative feedback and telling somebody they have bad body odour.
  • Five steps to having a difficult conversation with somebody in the workplace.

26 Jul 2020[024] Q&A: How Can I Get My Team to Speak Up In Meetings00:23:51

How to encourage employees to speak up in meetings is a common question for new leaders. In order for you to get the most from your team and encourage creative thinking or innovative problem solving, you need to get your team to share their thoughts and opinions.

However, it isn’t always easy to get people to speak up in meetings, especially if people are introverted, from a non-English speaking background, a minority group, or are a young professional.

For these types of people, you must create a safe space for them to share their thoughts, opinions and ideas. In this episode, I share three ideas on how you as a new leader can encourage your team to speak up in meetings, including how to listen and acknowledge, create thinking time and stop interruptors.

In Episode 24 of The Leadership Pod, “Q&A: How Can I Get My Team to Speak Up in Meetings?”, I delve into this topic. You’ll learn:

  • Why you need your team to speak up in meetings.
  • Reasons your team do not speak up in meetings.
  • How to listen and acknowledge when they speak.
  • Verbal and nonverbal strategies to show you’re listening.
  • Create thinking time, including a fun post-it note activity.

30 Aug 2020[029] Use The One Strategy to Delegate Assertively at Work00:15:37

Are you looking for an effective technique to delegate assertively at work? As a leadership coach, I’ve found that many emerging leaders don’t delegate effectively. Either they avoid it because they don’t know how to do it, or their attempts at delegating are not effective

As an emerging leader, it’s critical that you know how to effectively delegate to your team. You need to ask them to perform tasks, meet objectives or reach goals.

If you avoid delegating because you don’t know how to do it, or your delegation technique isn’t effective, it often results in you doing the work yourself. Which in turn leads to overwork and overwhelm.

In this episode of The Leadership Pod, I guide you through my winning technique for delegation. It’s a simple 3-step technique that works for me and for my coaching clients.

In this episode, Use this One Strategy to Delegate Assertively at Work, you will learn:

  • The problem with delegation.
  • What happens if you don’t delegate effectively.

It can be daunting, especially if you’re disagreeing with somebody more powerful than you. However, in leadership, it’s critical that you develop the skill to disagree when you need to and want to.

Holding back from disagreeing can lead to many negative repercussions in leadership. The main one being, you can let bad ideas stay in the conversation, driving your team’s growth in the wrong direction, which in turn, damages your reputation as a leader.

In this episode, I share my thoughts on why it can be hard to disagree and then I continue on with three reasons as to why you should disagree when you’re a leader.

In “Why Disagreeing Makes You Look Like a Leader”, you will learn:

  • Why disagreeing with family and friends is easier than with your coworkers.
  • Fears that could be holding you back from disagreeing.
  • Why you can’t be a people-pleaser and agree 100% of the time.
  • Why disagreeing makes you look like a leader.
  • How disagreeing makes you look more honest and authentic.
  • Why disagreeing helps you become more visible in the office.
  • Details about next week’s episode on how to disagree.

25 Oct 2020[37] How to Disagree Assertively With Someone at Work00:25:55

Learning how to disagree assertively with someone at work is a key skill that emerging leaders need to master. As you climb higher in the corporate world, you need to make your opinion known. You need to look like an independent thinker if you want to establish the reputation as a leader. And disagreeing with people at work when you need to or want to is a great way to do this.

However, disagreeing doesn’t come naturally to many people. If you’re more of a passive communicator, you’re likely to use a lot of indirect language when you disagree, causing your disagreement to sound weak. If you’re more of an aggressive communicator, your disagreements can sound too direct and overpowering.

There is a middle ground that is disagreeing assertively. This allows you to get your point across with confidence and conviction, while at the same time, maintaining a positive working relationship with the other person.

In this episode, How to Disagree Assertively With Someone at Work, I guide you through the 5-step strategy that will help you disagree assertively. I teach you the foundational concepts behind this strategy and give you example sentences to use in your next disagreement.

You will learn:

  • Two common problems when people disagree.
  • 5-step structure on how to disagree assertively, respectively and effectively with someone at work.
  • 1. Recognise the other persons’ viewpoint.
  • 2. Ask permission to disagree.
  • 3. Verbalise your disagreement.
  • 4. Support your opinion with a rationale.
  • 5. Circle back and ask for input/feedback.

15 Nov 2020[040] Your Professional Image When You Work From Home00:25:27

How to maintain a professional image when you work from home. This is a question many emerging leaders are asking themselves in 2020.

When you work from home, it’s tempting to opt for comfortable clothing such as activewear, loungewear or pyjamas. However, these outfit choices can have an impact on your level of productivity and confidence when you work from home.

A 2020 study by CouponFollow with 1,000 remote workers found that 80% of people who dress more formally felt more productive throughout the day.

Personally, I’ve found when I lift my level of formality in my WFH outfits, I immediately feel more confident and I’m more productive in my work.

In this episode of The Leadership Pod, I talk more about this issue and I share with you some ideas on what you can wear when you work from home.

You will learn:

  • More about the CouponFollow study of remote workers.
  • How outfits choices impact your level of productivity.
  • The issue of no separation between our personal and professional selves.
  • Easy outfit ideas to help you maintain professionalism when you work from home.

20 Dec 2020[045] How to Get Your Ideas Across in Meetings00:18:49

How to get your ideas across in meetings is a common question for emerging leaders. Many of my clients ask me, “How can I get people to listen to my ideas?” or “How can I get my point across in meetings?”.

These are common obstacles all emerging leaders need to overcome. If you can relate to the above questions, I want you to know that you’re not alone.

Getting your ideas across effectively and confidently in meetings is possible. However most people don’t succeed with this because they get their thoughts muddled or people interrupt them.

In order to get your ideas across effectively in meetings, there are three things you need to remember:

  1. Get to the point quickly,
  2. Support your point with evidence, facts or an example, and
  3. Invite a discussion.

In this podcast episode, I expand more on these three steps and share an example of a mid-level business woman who struggles to get her ideas across in meetings.

07 Feb 2021[051] What Happens When You Start to Set Boundaries?00:13:20

A common question when people start to set boundaries is: what happens when you set boundaries? How will other people react? Will they become aggressive with you? How should I respond? All of these questions are normal when you start to set boundaries.

There are two difficulties you’re up against when you set boundaries. First, you have to work up the courage to set boundaries with the other person. Second, you have to be prepared to protect those boundaries once you’ve set them. It’s the “protection” aspect I address in this podcast episode.

Protecting your boundaries once you’ve set them is incredibly important. People will try to push your boundaries. They will try to get you to change your mind and do what they want you to do. As a leader, it’s very important that you are strong enough to protect your boundaries and not give in to other people’s pressure.

Setting boundaries in your professional or personal life can be challenging, but not impossible. I hope this podcast episode will give you the confidence to protect your boundaries once you’ve set them.

In this episode, you will learn:

  • What commonly happens when you set boundaries.
  • How other people are likely to respond when you set boundaries.
  • 3 most common types of push back when you set boundaries.
  • A little about my experience setting boundaries and learning how to be assertive.

Listen to this episode on the podcast platform of your choice: Apple Podcasts, Audible, Spotify, Google and more.

I hope you enjoy this episode!

14 Feb 2021[052] Q&A Can You Stop People Communicating Aggressively?00:12:48

Can you stop people communicating aggressively with you? This was a question I received from one of my video course students. You may have come across this situation yourself. Perhaps you’ve asked yourself, “how to deal with aggressive communicators” or “how to stop people communicating aggressively”.

Dealing with people who communicate aggressively with you is challenging, especially if you’re coming from a passive style of communication. Rather than changing the other person’s communication style (which is near impossible), a better strategy is to use assertive communication to guide them to communicate with you the way you want.

Assertive communication is the best style of communication to use in both your personal and business life. It helps you set boundaries and communicate more openly and honestly to people around you. When you master assertive communication, you feel more empowered and in control of your life, and you can stop those aggressive communicators!

In this podcast episode, I answer the question, “Can you stop people communicating aggressively with you?”.

You will learn:

  • The 4 different styles of communication
  • What commonly happens with aggressive communicators.
  • How to use assertive communication to “train” people to communicate with you the way you want.
  • A common mistake people make by accepting bad communication.

21 Mar 2021[056] Q&A: How Can I End a Conversation Gracefully at a Networking Event00:20:37

How to end a conversation at a networking event. Ending conversations at networking events is challenging for many emerging leaders. You don’t want to sound impolite. You don’t want to be rude or offend your conversation partner. But at the same time, you don’t want to be stuck with a rambler or in a pointless, boring conversation.

Ending conversations is challenging but it’s not impossible. For leaders, it’s incredibly important that you’re able to end conversations when you need to.

Your time is precious. You need to make sure that the time you spend networking is with people who matter for your career or business.

In addition, being able to confidently end conversations makes you look like a leader. It shows that you’re taking control of the conversation and taking control of your time.

When I started networking, I didn’t know how to end conversations gracefully. I thought it was rude and impolite so I would just let the other person talk. I ended up wasting a lot of time at networking events, not meeting people I wanted to meet and missing out on business opportunities.

Since then I’ve learned how to end conversations gracefully at networking events and I’ve built the courage to do so. And in this podcast episode and related YouTube video, I share my strategies with you.

If you want to know how to end conversations at networking events, listen to this episode below to get my eight strategies you can follow. I share both nonverbal and verbal cues you can use to indicate you’re ending the conversation.

I also share many sentence examples that you can say to your conversation partner to end the conversation gracefully.

28 Mar 2021[057] How to Speak Like a Leader at Work00:19:08

How to speak like a leader at work. As you advance into leadership, you’ll be required to use a different style of communication in the workplace. You will need to move away from the style of communication you used early on in your career and adopt a more assertive and confident style of communication.

Speaking like a leader and sounding like a leader in workplace conversations is critical if you want to advance into a leadership position. You must know how to delegate to your team confidently and effectively. You will need to know how to share your opinions with conviction. And you will also need to learn to be okay with disagreeing, and disagree assertively.

Whether it’s delegating, sharing your opinions or disagreeing, these are not communication styles that people commonly use when they are entry level in their career. However as you advance into leadership, these communication techniques are what will make you stand out, get noticed and get promoted.

In this podcast episode and related YouTube vide (below), I delve into these three communication techniques to help you speak like a leader at work.

If you’re an emerging leader and you feel your communication needs improving because people don’t listen to you at work, you get overlooked in meetings, or you don’t have the impact you want, then this episode is definitely for you.

09 May 2021[063] Why You Need to Have Difficult Conversations00:16:03

Why do you need to have difficult conversations? Many people shy away from challenging or difficult conversations. They avoid them or make excuses as to why they don’t need to have that difficult conversation.

Instead, they may try to leave “clues” in the hope the other person will pick up on those clues and change their behaviour. This rarely works.

Difficult conversations are a necessary part of your personal and professional life. As a leader, rather than avoiding them, you need to tackle them head on.

When you do, you feel empowered. Because you’re no longer taking a passive approach to life allowing a difficult situation to continue. You’re dealing with it in an assertive way.

There are many reasons as to why you need to have difficult conversations. In this episode, I talk about the top 3 reasons that push me to have difficult conversations when I need to.

You will learn about:

  • People won’t pick up on your clues.
  • It reduces your stress and anxiety.
  • It helps you set boundaries for the future.

If you’ve ever had difficulty addressing problems in your work life or personal life and you want reasons as to why difficult conversations are important, this episode is for you.

16 May 2021[064] How to Deal With a Coworker Who Wants to Be Your Best Friend00:23:48

How do you deal with a coworker who wants to be your best friend? How do you set boundaries with a colleague in the workplace who wants to be your best friend?

The reality is, coworkers are not your friends. I know it sounds harsh. But you shouldn’t be “best friends” with your coworkers in the workplace.

When you are best friends with your coworkers it muddies your professional relationship with them and can sometimes damage your reputation too.

Being best friends with your coworkers can:

  • Prevent you from setting clear boundaries.
  • Make you look unprofessional in the eyes of other coworkers (or your boss).
  • Prevent you from getting your work done.

There are probably more reasons as to why you shouldn’t be best friends with your coworkers, but these are three that I touch on in this week’s podcast episode.

Of course, it’s important to maintain a positive working relationship with all of your coworkers. And I encourage you to do that. But sometimes the relationship gets too intense.

Sometimes it becomes problematic for you. It can begin to distract you from your work and damage your reputation around the office.

I know you’ve worked hard to get where you are in your career. To avoid these negative consequences, I’ve outlined 5 ways you can deal with a coworker who wants to be your friend in this week’s podcast episode and YouTube video.

These strategies are practical and will definitely help you establish a professional relationship with people.

23 May 2021[065] Q&A: How to Start a New Role as a Leader When Your Team Is Still Working Remotely00:22:50

Starting a New Role as a Leader When Your Team Is Working Remotely is a challenge for many leaders in 2020 and 2021.

You cannot see your team members face to face. You cannot get to know them the way you usually would in the office. And you cannot get to know others leaders inside your organisation as easily as you normally would.

How do you build relationships with your team when they’re working remotely? How do you build key relationships with other leaders when everyone is working from home?

These are key questions that many ambitious emerging leaders want to know the answer to and I address them in this week’s podcast episode and YouTube video.

Starting any new leadership role is challenging. But when you cannot meet and interact with people in-person, it makes it a whole lot harder.

The seven strategies I share in these resources are to help you get to know your team, establish rapport and build trust with them while you are all working remotely.

You will learn about:

  1. How to get to know your team when working remotely.
  2. Help your team understand your goals.
  3. Decide the best way to communicate.
  4. Open up a “free talk time”.
  5. Empower your team to make decisions.
  6. Organise a virtual pizza party.
  7. Get to know other leaders inside your organisation.

I also share an activity you can do with your team to get to know them. The questions I use in the activity are below:

Questions in the “Get to Know Your Team” Activity

  1. What do we already know about our new leader?
  2. What don’t we know but would like to know about our new leader?
  3. What are our fears or concerns about our new leader?
  4. What do we hope for with our new leader?
  5. What recommendations do we have for communication, dealing with issues, meetings etc?
  6. Other questions that will help you get to know your team (and vice versa).

How can you build your personal brand when working remotely? Building your personal brand while working remotely or working from home might be more challenging, but not impossible.

Over 2020 and 2021, many emerging leaders have been forced to build their personal brand, or leadership brand, without meeting people in-person. What’s important to focus on when you can’t interact with people in-person is your online, social media, phone, and email presence.

Basically think of any way that you interact or communicate with other people while working remotely and that is what you need to focus on when building your personal brand remotely.

I delve into how to build your personal brand when working remotely and share concrete steps you can take in the podcast episode and YouTube video below.

You will learn about:

  • Using LinkedIn to build your personal brand including your headline, about section, content creation, and connection requests.
  • Using email to build your personal brand including email greeting, closing, and email signature.
  • Using phone to build your personal brand including tone of voice, greetings, and using people’s names.
  • Using video conference to build your personal brand including background, outfit, and body language.
  • Other tips including follow up emails after group video calls, remembering birthdays, sending research/articles, and attending online events.

31 Aug 2021[067] How to Be Assertive On-the-Spot00:23:17

How can you be assertive on-the-spot? Being assertive when you need to and on-the-spot can be challenging, especially if you’re coming from a more passive style of communication.

It can be really difficult to think of how to respond assertively to a negative comment, in the moment.

I don’t know if this happens to you but sometimes when I’m in front of a stressful conversation, a conflict or a rude comment, I freeze.

I can’t think of anything to say on-the-spot. I start mumbling. I get anxious. And I don’t know how to respond to this person - until 20 minutes later!

Then I think of what I “should have said” or “could have said” to that person.

This delayed response time isn’t helpful when you want to be assertive on-the-spot.

In this podcast episode, I share with you five techniques to help you be assertive in the moment.

These are techniques that have helped me as a recovering passive communicator and they have helped thousands of my students in my Assertive Communication Skills Masterclass too.

In this episode, I talk about:

  • Why is it so hard to think of a response on-the-spot?
  • Try to calm your stress response.
  • Be prepared, if you can.
  • Listen first.
  • Get your key message clear in your mind.
  • Re-write previous conversations.

30 Nov 2021How to Share Your Ideas in Meetings - Effective 5 Step Framework [070]00:23:13

How can you share your ideas in meetings? Sharing your ideas in meetings and contributing with confidence is a key skill that emerging leaders need to master.

But meetings are a time when people commonly become nervous - when you can easily lose confidence in yourself and your ideas. As a result, you might refrain from sharing your brilliant ideas with others in the room

Sharing your ideas in meetings doesn’t have to be daunting, complicated or difficult. In fact, there is a simple 5-step process that you can follow.

  1. Plan what you want to say.
  2. Break into the group conversation.
  3. Bridge people to your idea through facts, story observation or trend.
  4. Share your idea in the meeting.
  5. Follow-up to see what others think of your idea.

If you follow this simple 5-step process, you will be able to share your ideas with others in the meeting with ease and confidence.

I talk more about this framework and how you can share your ideas in meetings in this podcast episode!

31 Dec 2021Build a Stand-Out Leadership Presence in 2022! [071]00:20:17

How can you build your leadership presence? How can you stand out in the workplace as somebody with leadership potential? Leadership presence or executive presence is a quality that helps others to see you as a leader. As somebody who has great potential to become a leader and be very successful in that role.

You might know people you work with who have charisma or the “it factor”. These are people with leadership presence. And it’s this “presence” that allows them to have so much impact in their career.

If you want to have the maximum amount of impact in your career, then you need to develop leadership presence. But since it’s such an illusive quality, how can you actually build it? How can you create leadership presence? That’s exactly what we delve into in this episode.

I talk about:

  • What is leadership presence.
  • The importance of developing self-confidence.
  • Get clear on the value you bring.
  • Use confident body language.
  • Communicate with confidence.
  • Create a signature leadership outfit.
