Hello and welcome to another episode of the Leadership Log where we talk about navigating everyday leadership. Do you find yourself taking risks or playing it safe? Sometimes it can be easy for leaders just to tread water, especially when things seem to be going well. Yet in truth continued creativity and risk taking is critical to leadership success. In this episode we are talking about taking risks and joining us to chat about their experiences of risk taking is Nicole Kerkenbush Nicole Kerkenbush joined Monument Health (formerly Regional Health) in Rapid City, South Dakota in 2016, and is currently serving on the Executive Team in the role of Chief Nursing and Performance Officer. The areas she is responsible for include Nursing, Operational Performance Management, Patient Centered Design, and Enterprise Intelligence. She initially joined Regional Health as their first Vice President of Data Analytics. Prior to joining Monument Health, Nicole served 24 years in the United States Army Nurse Corps where she focused on supporting quality healthcare with information and technology. Key roles that Nicole served in during her time in the Army include Chief Information Officer, Chief Medical Information Officer, and Military Functional Deputy Program Executive Officer. She also served as the Nursing Informatics Consultant to the Army Surgeon General for four years. She retired at the rank of Colonel. Nicole earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. She also received Masters Degrees in Healthcare Administration and Nursing, as well as a Certificate in Biomedical Informatics from the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington. In this episode we chat to Vicki Hovercraft Dixon.
Vicki started her nursing career as a healthcare support worker in a nursing home and completed her NVQ before commencing her nurse training at Southampton Hospital in March 1997 where she was one of the last project 2000 intake. After qualifying in 2002 her career was primarily focused in acute medicine, including some time spent in high dependency unit. She then moved into cancer care in 2009 and in 2011, set up the first Macmillan acute oncology service, which she then went on to present the model nationally and internationally.
She has also completed her MSc in advanced clinical practice, was nominated for the Macmillan Leadership Award and the nursing standard Leadership Award.
She also won a hospital Hero Award for her leadership.She's also completed her a QA fellowship with health education were six. And if all that wasn't enough, in September of this year, she started a new role as a lead cancer nurse at Hampshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. And to top it all off the icing on the cake and why she's here today. She's currently a Florence Nightingale Foundation Leadership Scholar.

She has gained a wide range of experiences in the NHS, community setting, private sector and in the USA. Over the last eight years Lana has gained experience within the clinical governance team as a specialist midwife for audits, guidelines, risk management and currently work as Maternity Risk Manager in the NHS Lana successfully launched the first Breastfeeding Group called Breast is Best at the Linden Children’s Centre in Hackney. She is also a member of the Trinidad & Tobago Nurses Association, member of the Trinidad & Tobago Healthcare United Kingdom Forum and co-director for Heartfelt Philanthropy Network In 2020, she received the Chief Nurse Gold Award for her contribution and dedication to maternity risk management at her trust. Storytelling is often the best way for leaders to communicate with people they are leading. Effective leaders—the Brene Browns as well as the Obamas — tell or embody stories that speak to other people. So is it the tool that everyone — leaders especially — should be constantly sharpening? In this episode we are going to be chatting to Jane Dwelly and exploring storytelling and making the case for storytelling as a key competence for effective leadership Jane can truly be described as a thought leader in digital health and in particular the development of people who are able to make this vital transformation happen. Jane trained and worked as a financial journalist for the first seven years of her career before joining the civil service to work at the Department of Health as its Chief Press Officer and later: head of Communications for Lord Ara Darzi. Jane started working on the digital health agenda in 2013 in NHS England covering such topics as shared patient records and ambitions to make the NHS “paper free”. Jane now has a portfolio in which she directs international activities for CHIME - a global membership organisation for digital health leaders, teaches leadership communications around the world, and publishes on the subject of nurse and midwife empowerment through digital health. Jane lives in South West London with her family and also finds time to be a Trustee of the Florence Nightingale Museum. Alongside this, she recently completed a PGCE and aims to take her experience and knowledge into shaping policy for university healthcare education in the future. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to have a chat with the lovely Andrea Sutcliffe, Chief Executive and Registrar of The Nursing and Midwifery Council (The NMC) Listen as Andrea shares her leadership journey to date, gives us an insight into a typical day for her and provides her perspective on some of the greatest leadership challenges for nurses and midwives at the moment Andrea's Bio Andrea joined the Nursing and Midwifery Council as Chief Executive and Registrar in January 2019. Andrea has over 35 years’ experience in health and social care, at a local and national level. Previously she was the Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care at the Care Quality Commission, Chief Executive at the Social Care Institute for Excellence and Chief Executive of the Appointments Commission. She was also an Executive Director at the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence for seven years from 2000 having managed services for children, women, older people and neurosciences for local organisations in London in the 1990’s. Andrea is an advocate for the positive use of social media and you can follow her as @CrouchEndTiger7 and discover her love of her cat Archie, hiking, Sunderland football club, music, theatre and film as well as her thoughts on health and social care. Hello Intrepid Leaders and welcome to another episode of the Leadership Log where we talk about navigating everyday leadership.
Joining me in this episode is Helene Donnelly. Helene is a registered nurse with over twenty years experience working in the NHS and Social Care. She raised concerns about the failings at Stafford Hospital (part of Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust) and she was a key witness to the Francis public inquiry that followed in 2010.
Helene was awarded an OBE in 2014 for this and she has since pioneered the role of ambassador for cultural change and the concept of Freedom to Speak Up Guardians which is now embedded across NHS and independent sector healthcare organisations
I am so thrilled to be have had the opportunity to sit down and have a one on one conversation with the inspirational Helene. I was in awe of her candidness and at times floored by the lived examples she shared that ultimately drove her to be the ‘skunk at the picnic’
Helene brave decision to speak up about care and behaviours she was observing and sometimes experiencing first hand allowed others to feel that they could do the same. Join us as we discuss the potential challenges of speaking up and how, collectively, speaking up in healthcare isn't just about making your voice heard—it's about making a difference.

His first job title was “Experimentalist”, which set the tone for the rest of his career. He then made the move into technology, and many subsequent years of leadership including CTO and CIO roles has made Tom passionate about DevOps, psychological safety and generative leadership. Tom now focusses on organisational transformation through safety culture. Additionally, he is the founder of psychsafety.co.uk, an online resource intended to aggregate and share current research, opinion and practices related to psychological safety. They have a newsletter and community and through psychsafety also provide psychological safety coaching, workshops, consulting and training. Outside of work, Tom spends as much time as possible outdoors, and is studying for a Masters Degree in Global Health and Humanitarianism. Hello and welcome to another episode of the Leadership Log where we talk about navigating everyday leadership. In this episode we are talking with Lucy Brown about her experiences of Imposter Syndrome Imposter syndrome was first described by two clinical psychologists – Dr Pauline Clance and Dr Suzanne Imes – in 1978, and it is reported that about 70 per cent of people have felt some degree of imposter syndrome and we think it is something almost everyone can relate to. Lucy is the Director of Nursing and Deputy Director of the Florence Nightingale Foundation Academy. She is an experienced Director of Nursing, award-winning Clinical Leader and proud FNF alumni. Lucy started her nursing career at Guys and St Thomas’ specialising in Paediatric Intensive Care before moving to Australia where she worked in the Royal Childrens Hospital in Brisbane. Most recently Lucy has been working for Circle Health group as a Director of Nursing supporting the NHS resilience work on the frontline. Lucy shares here experiences of imposter syndrome and provides some useful insights that can help you to recognise how imposter syndrome may operate for you . Sarah is a 2021 Emerging Leader Scholar Sarah is currently a team lead with the integrated discharge service at North Bristol NHS Trust, where she manages a multi-disciplinary team of nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, discharge trackers and administrators who are supporting inpatient areas with complex discharges. Outside of work Sarah has a variety of interests including music and football, reading and keeping active with both running and dance fitness. Last year Sarah completed a football referee course and is a wannabe trainee referee. In this episode we talk with Colette Datt. Colette has undertaken a Florence Nightingale (FNF) Aspiring Nurse Director scholarship
Colette is currently the Associate Director of Nursing for Children and Young People at North Middlesex Hospital.
Colette actively champions compassionate leadership and patient experience. She is very keen on supporting the development of the more junior members of her teams and she is an active mentor. She is currently working with her trust, FNF and 3 local Health Education Institution’s piloting a coproduced leadership programme for student nurses. She is keen to ensure student nurses and medical students are supported to work together in multi-disciplinary teams to learn from each other, to have a voice/perspective in service development and delivery and to undertake quality improvement projects.
She is determined to use her leadership skills, knowledge and experience to positively influence patient outcomes and staff experience and wellbeing.
One of Colette's dinner guest is Yvonne Coghil - Yvonne is currently the Director – WRES Implementation in NHS England, and deputy president of the RCN.

Gillian shares her experience of being a Global Scholar and gives us an overview of her project. Gill had worked within the Welsh NHS for over 22 years since moving to Wales from her native Ireland. She now supports the Chief Nursing Officer as a nursing officer in the Welsh Government, providing professional advice for the following policy areas: nurse regulation; nursing education and career development; workforce modernisation and development including implementation of the Nurse Staffing Levels (Wales) Act 2016. Gill is the first Welsh FNF Global scholar. Gill has worked with a number of third sector organisations as a nurse adviser to support nursing workforce developments in Uganda. In this episode we are talking with Dr Helen Lane about leadership through the pandemic.
Dr Helen Lane is a Consultant Physician, specialising in Diabetes & Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine at Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board where she has worked for the last 15 years and a Quality Improvement Skills Faculty Tutor for HEIW (Health Education Improvement Wales). Having held a number of lead roles in Innovation and Improvement within the Health board for many years and clinical lead for the multi-disciplinary QI teams, she is also the Associate Medical Director in Quality Improvement for the health board.She has a distinction in Clinical Leadership (postgraduate certificate level 7), is an Improvement Advisor (Improvement Cymru & IHI), and has recently been a finalist in the Womenspire awards 2021.
Helen and our team have recently been successful in winning the NHS Wales Working with Industry Award at the Medi Wales innovation Awards 2021, for their Quality Improvement project working on safer intra-venous fluids in an acute general hospital.
She is a wife and a mum of 3 lovely boys. Enjoys painting glasses, as in drinking glasses not spectacles. And has an increasing interest in creative writing which has lead to the recent publication of a book of poetry with another colleague - Reflections through the waves: poems of the pandemic
Listen to Help describe very honestly her experiences of leading during the past 22 months. Becky and Helen discuss how the pandemic has impacted on staff and how that manifests in daily working. Helen also discuss how she started writing poetry as an emotional outlet that helped her resilliance.

She recently completed the Hospice UK Strategic Leadership programme, and describes herself as having a real love of lifelong learning, people development and all things QI. Evelyn and Becky talk about why its important that we don't shy away from having difficult conversations and offer some advice on how you might structure difficult conversations. Hello Intrepid Leaders and welcome to series two of what was formally known as the Scholar Spotlight Sessions! As you can see we have had a re-brand and a change of name!!! For this first episode we chat with the delightful Greta Westwood. Greta shares her leadership journey with us and talks about the ambitious plans of the Florence Nightingale Foundation Greta has been the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Florence Nightingale Foundation since September 2019. She joined the Foundation in 2017 as the Chief Operating Officer. Greta is a Registered Nurse and a Florence Nightingale Foundation Alumna (2012 Leadership Scholar). She was a awarded a CBE in the Queen’s 2021 New Year’s Honours for Services to Nursing and Midwifery. Greta qualified as a nurse in 1983 and a midwife in 1987. She completed an MSc in Health Psychology in 1996 and a PhD in Nursing in 2010. Greta was one of the first genetic counsellors in the UK from 1987-2007. She held a joint Clinical Academic post with the University of Southampton from 2000-2005. From 2008-2012, she established, and then led, a National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Research Network. Greta held a joint post (2012-2017) with a NHS Trust and the University of Southampton as Director of Clinical Academic Practice for the university. She led the university’s clinical academic training programme for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals and was promoted to Professor for this work. Lisa is a 2021 digital scholar Lisa is currently leading on the Patient Safety Programme in Improvement Cymru - the national improvement organisation in Wales. Prior to this she had worked in education Lisa traditionally trained over 32 years ago (something I know she is very proud of ) and worked in medicine but most of her career was focused in cardiology both in London and south wales. Lisa has also worked in resuscitation and patient safety, so it comes as no surprise that her Interests include improvement, behaviour change, humanising healthcare and equity. When not in work Lisa loves to spend time with friends, family, food, walking and running with dogs. She has run a few marathons which she feel justifies my status as a runner although now I get dragged round local cliff paths by dogs.
