13 Self-Awareness, Happiness and Leadership with Matthew Phelan
00:28:50
Matt Phelan is Co-Founder & Co-CEO of The Happiness Index He's focused on sharing the vision of Freedom To Be Human with a global audience.
Matt is happiest when spending time with loved ones, particularly anything that is outdoors in nature.
I started my first business, a marketing agency, in 2008 right before the last big financial crisis. Although I can’t recommend starting a business when the world is in melt-down, we certainly had to learn a lot of lessons very quickly at the time!
My first business was actually integral to building The Happiness Index. Not only did the idea come from one of our customers (who is now our Chief Marketing Officer), but our CTO at the time built V1 of our product. It was initially an in-house solution we used! Quickly our customers started asking to use it too, and now we provide a platform that’s used by thousands of people across over 100 countries.
In a nutshell, we provide a SaaS platform that helps HR and People professionals measure their team’s happiness and engagement. Traditionally, emotions are left out of the workplace, but neuroscience shows us that we need to unite both the head and the heart. By understanding how employees are thinking and feeling, businesses will thrive.

17 Self Aware Leadership with Sophie Bryan, Ordinarily Different
00:29:12
Sophie Bryan is an executive and transformational coach working with professionals who find themselves feeling like they are stuck in their careers – or their lives in general – and want to move to a more fulfilling, expansive and enjoyable career & lifestyle.
“As my personal story will attest, I know the “stickiness” of doing a job that doesn’t truly fulfil you and the impact it has had not only my life, but that of my family and friends too.
At the age of 32, I quit my job as a HR Director in London – which gave me a lot of stickiness – high salary, stability, and status – all things that I had been working hard for all my career. I also had a young daughter to raise and a mortgage and bills to pay.
And I was miserable… unfulfilled, stressed, anxiety ridden, working long hours, 4 hour commutes a day, no social life, lack of family time and stressed out. Eventually, these feelings overruled the stickiness and I could not deny my true feelings. I craved FREEDOM!! I wanted to have complete control over my day, I wanted to be my own boss, and HAD to break free of the confines of an office. When I could see the world carrying out life outside the office windows – what was I missing out on?!
So I quit. With nothing but my drive, passion, goals to make my dream of being my boss a reality, and my desire to shift my life to a space that was dramatically different from the unfulfilling job that I currently held.
Eight months after quitting, I found myself standing on the TEDxFolkestone stage, delivering a talk about an idea that I am so truly passionate about, with 7 clients under my belt, a whole new network and community of friends and clients who truly inspire me, and I felt like I was making a real valid contribution to the world. I have found my freedom, I’m acting on my passion, and I’m living my purpose.
Now a further two years on, with significant business success, health, happiness and an abundance of new knowledge and focus, I am here to help you discover what your freedom, passion and purpose is – in whatever shape or form that may take – to become the best version of yourself you can be, and to live your best life.”
