13 Apr 2022 | Tony Orr - The First Source for Local News | 00:47:42
Morning news on radio has long been a staple of our work day. We have long relied on local newscasters to get up in the middle of the night to write those stories to keep all of us informed. Tony Orr moved to Kingston in 1977 to take up the morning shift at CKLC and Y98; 24 years later, he moved 'across the street' to a brand new operation that included KROCK and Country 93.5. He was there for another 20 years. There is more to Tony than just the news. He got involved in his community, joining different groups - all with the goal of making his new home town a better place. Over the past 40+ years, he has told many stories and shares some in this episode. 30 Mar 2022 | Georgette Fry - A Woman Who Just Loves to Sing! | 00:59:06
Georgette Fry is a name familiar to music fans in Southeastern Ontario. She has been singing her heart out for over 40 years. Her vocal style has bridged the gap between jazz, soul, blues and gospel, with the power of Etta James and the rasp of Bonnie Raitt. Her debut solo LP, back in 1996, “Rites of Passage”, was nominated for a Juno Award. Georgette continues to perform with some of the best musicians around, reinventing herself to showcase the talents that have made her a favourite. In 2002, she spearheaded the organization of choirs in over two dozen communities, offering women the opportunity to get together and sing! SHOUT SISTER is 20 years old and continues to thrive! This is a new conversation recorded in mid-February, 2022. Here is the link to the video Georgette and I spoke of during our conversation. Hold the cursor over the link, press Ctrl & click …. 27 Apr 2022 | Alexander Landry - An Officer in the Forces, almost a decade in | 00:44:55
For those listening from outside the area, Kingston is home to a large military base. Thousands of families have been posted in and out of this community. Kingston is also where you’ll find the Royal Military College (RMC) – a degree-granting university whose primary purpose is training military officers. Alex Landry is an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces. He has been posted to bases in New Brunswick, Ontario, Ukraine and Turkey. Community involvement has also been important to him – working on flood relief in Ottawa, and volunteering as a firefighter and first-aid responder in New Brunswick. He is passionate about both. In this episode, I chat with Alex about the last ten years, about the experiences of integrating both passions – from entering RMC to serving with the Canadian contingent at the NATO base in Turkey. This conversation was recorded virtually in late February 2022. 16 Mar 2022 | Lubomyr Luciuk - Slava Ukraini | 00:59:29
Lubomyr Luciuk is a Professor at the Royal Military College in Kingston. He was born and raised in this city in Southeastern Ontario, whose parents immigrated to Canada from Ukraine in the late 40’s. He obviously has an emotional attachment to his ancestral home. At the same time, his passion has been the study of Ukraine and the surrounding geography. He is an author of many books on the topic and has been sought after to comment on the current crisis. In this extended episode, Lubomyr sits down with host, Dave Cunningham, to help us try to understand the past, the present and the future of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This episode was recorded virtually on March 10th, 2022 During the episode, we refer to a local fundraiser. 21 Jun 2022 | Jim Reid - Making Difficult Times Easier | 00:32:45
Podcasts featuring local history have been very popular with listeners. Bill Stevenson was my guest for a show focused on the Facebook Page he set up – “Vintage Kingston”. Chris West shared plans for the revitalization of the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes. Brian Johnson told us stories of his 30+ years as captain of the Wolfe Island Ferry – stories about the Island and the waters between it and the City of Kingston. This is another in the series but a little unique. Jim Reid is the fourth generation to own and operate James Reid Funeral Home here in Kingston. It all began when his Great-Grand Father, the original “James Reid”, arrived here with his mother and siblings. He put his name on the facade on the building at 256 Princess Street in 1854 – and it’s still there! 05 Jul 2022 | Helen Cooper - Still passionate about the City! | 00:45:45
Helen Cooper was first elected to municipal council in Kingston back in 1980. Eight years later, she became the first woman to take on the job of Mayor. This episode profiles life before politics, during her time around the municipal ‘horseshoe’, and positions she occupied post elected office. Local government is obviously a very important part of community service, but volunteerism plays a critical role with almost every aspect of our society. In addition to her career in politics, Helen continues to contribute. 07 Jun 2022 | Rob Watkins - Musically, Keeping it Simple | 00:45:15
Rob Watkins is back with a new conversation. As with many singer/songwriters during the pandemic, he spent a good chunk of his time writing songs. When it came time to recording them, he chose to present the music in its simplest form, offering listeners the opportunity to hear the songs as he had written them. In this episode, we speak about that, as well as his desire to seek out other musicians in the community, whose styles may be different from his, with a view to possibly integrating new elements into his own music. We also spent time talking about performing – what venue does he prefer these days, after decades of entertaining.

John Price has been a successful realtor for over 30 years – and has seen some changes. Along the way, he has developed relationships with the military community in Kingston – particularly with the Family Resource Centre. His other passion involves a love of Corvettes and somewhere near 400 of them are expected to join him for a weekend in June – an event John and his wife, Heather, have organized for the second time in four years!

19 Jul 2022 | Jamie McKenzie-Naish – The Power of Cultural Heritage | 00:42:05
Her Dad loved museums and her Mom was a teacher. So it seemed only natural that Jamie McKenzie-Naish would someday combine that ‘heritage’ as a museum guide, curator and now facilitator working with the Kingston & Area Association of Museums, Art Galleries and Historic Sites. As Managing Director of the organization, she works to support those sites, so they continue to grow and thrive. This conversation follows Jamie’s journey from Kingston, to Peterborough, to Leicester in the U.K., and back to Kingston. Years ago, Vicki Keith woke up in the middle of the night and decided that marathon swimming was going to be her sport; she pulled down her copy of the Guinness Book of World Records and focused on some milestones she felt she could achieve. In 1988, she became the first person to swim across all five of Canada’s Great Lakes in the space of 61 days. She has 16 world records to her credit and has now dedicated her time to coaching swimming for youth with physical disabilities, and their able-bodied siblings. 04 Oct 2022 | CFRC Radio - 100 Years! | 00:51:00
This episode is a little different. The Podcast does not normally profile an organization or an institution but when a radio station reaches its Centennial, you need to acknowledge it. And when it’s a campus/community station, you need to spend some time talking about it!

18 Oct 2022 | Rick Choma – Carving out a Career | 00:38:33
You may have heard that a radio station in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, celebrated its 100th Anniversary in early October 2022. CFRC is a campus/community station, located on the campus of Queen’s University. Over the years, some of the volunteer staff have chosen to use their time at CFRC as a learning opportunity; a chance to hone their skills and pursue a career in professional broadcasting. In this episode we profile one such individual with a passion for radio. After attending Queen’s, and CFRC, RICK CHOMA eventually got a position at CKWS Radio as a part-time broadcaster, covering the overnight shifts on the weekends. Over a 20+ year career, Rick worked at five different stations, in the same city, doing something different at each one. Follow that journey in this conversation with host, Dave Cunningham. Songs we spoke of, but didn’t play: · Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) · Mama Let Him Play – Doucette · Make Me Do Anything You Want – A Foot in Coldwater · Signs – Five Man Electrical Band Our theme music is “Stasis Oasis”, by Tim Aylesworth Follow us on Facebook, Linkedin, Instagram, & Threads Send comments & suggestions to thekingstonianpodcast@gmail.com Episodes also air weekly on CJAI at 101.3fm (Tue. at 4pm)
01 Nov 2022 | Savannah Shea – Staying Connected with Her Music | 00:35:00
I don’t think it matters where you live. You’ll be out at some music venue and a singer comes out on stage, a local performer, moves up to the mic, and wow! “Why haven’t I heard that voice before?” My guest in this episode has had music as part of her DNA since she was a child. She began by participating in a well-known local choir; took advantage of any ‘open-mic’ session she could; and studied music and voice at the post-secondary level. These days, music is her life’s work – she sings, teaches and composes her own music. There are some great singer/songwriters in almost every community around the world; artists who love to get on stage and share their music. Our role is to get out and listen! This is one person’s story. Our guest is Savannah Shea.

15 Nov 2022 | Norm Foster – Canada’s Preeminent Comic Playwright | 00:29:30
Before he became the most produced playwright in the history of the country; before he was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada for his body of work; and before he moved to Fredericton, Norm Foster lived and worked as a radio broadcaster for CKWS in Kingston, Ontario. That was back in the mid-seventies. It was in New Brunswick that he developed his passion for writing plays. Now, with some 70+ productions to his credit, it is said that on any given day of the year, one of those plays is either in rehearsal or in performance somewhere in the world. Forty-five years ago, Norm and host, Dave Cunningham, both worked at that radio station. In mid-September 2022, they both got together virtually for this conversation.

29 Nov 2022 | Willie Nicol – “What’s Stopping You?” | 00:39:00
After a 31-year career as a policeman in Scotland, and 7 years in the corporate security industry before being made redundant, Willie Nicol wasn’t quite ready to retire. His wife had an idea. Realizing that he had spent much of his life helping people, she suggested he take a more direct approach. He then retrained and started his own business as a Personal Development Coach. Host, Dave Cunningham met Willie on an online networking seminar and thought his story did merit a longer conversation. This virtual chat took place in mid-September 2022, with Willie at his home in Loans, Scotland and Dave in Kingston, Ontario. This episode explores his passion for continuing his mission to help – one person at a time.

27 Dec 2022 | Stephen Lee Naish – Author, “Screen Captures” | 00:48:00
One can make a film; or watch a film. One can also debate the meaning of film with friends. But there are a precious few who have a certain passion for films and how they relate to politics and pop culture – a passion that involves putting those thoughts to paper. Our guest is one such individual; his name is Stephen Lee Naish. Stephen’s latest book is “Screen Captures’ – a collection that explores film sagas, actors, directors, and the fans that watch them. In this episode, Stephen and host Dave Cunningham talk about that book and how his writing career evolved. We also spend a little time talking about whether ‘reading a book’ is still as popular a pastime as it once was. 13 Dec 2022 | Ted Hsu – Blending Science with Politics | 00:29:29
In this episode we speak with a politician, who, like most others, wasn’t always a politician. He was/is a scientist – an individual passionate about integrating the theoretical with the practical. Ted Hsu served a term as the Member of Parliament in Ottawa representing the constituency of Kingston & the Islands (Ontario). After a break, he now represents the same citizens as the Member of the Ontario Provincial Parliament in Toronto. Dealing with climate change has always been high on his agenda, influenced by his ongoing conversations with his family.

10 Jan 2023 | Janet McDonald – Making it Ring, by Hand | 00:33:00
This episode of the Podcast profiles a musician, who leads a group of dedicated players – all playing hand bells. Janet McDonald is the director of the “Limestone Ringers”, a hand bell choir based at Edith Rankin Memorial United Church, located at the west-end of Kingston. Hand bells trace their evolution back to the big bells in the spires, pulled by long ropes, back in the late 1600’s, in the British Isles. 24 Jan 2023 | Jamal Saeed – Chronicling his “Road From Damascus” | 00:50:35
Jamal Saeed is an author who lives in Kingston, Ontario. He first arrived as a refugee from the Middle East back in 2016. Jamal grew up in Syria; as a young man, he spent 30 months on the run avoiding the secret police for expressing his views on the need for basic human rights in his country. Eventually, he was forced to spend a total of 12 years in prison – never charged. Upon release, he continued his education, got married and raised a family. The civil war made life too dangerous, and he and his family made their way to Kingston as refugees. Jamal tells his story in his new book, “My Road from Damascus” and he sits down with Dave Cunningham in this episode of “The Kingstonian Podcast”. 21 Mar 2023 | Dan MacWhirter – Still Making a Contribution | 00:37:00
We are talking about retirement in this episode. Baby Boomers have been wrapping up their working-lives for several years now. Some have favoured the more traditional approach to retirement – making time for travel; focusing on activities they didn’t have as much time for while employed. Others have chosen to continue with their life’s work or moved to another passion. In this edition of the Podcast, I speak with Dan MacWhirter . After forty-three years, and three different careers, our guest opted to relocate to North Bay, Ontario, to help his son open a new business. Dan and I worked together for about a decade; retired from the same business around the same time; and took different paths. This conversation explores the decisions he made along the way and why “drinking coffee and visiting with some amazing people” makes his latest endeavour the “best job in the world”. Doug McClement is a highly respected sound engineer, who also happens to be a great storyteller. Born and raised in Kingston, he started his career by playing in local bands but soon discovered recording music was a better fit than playing it. Ten years ago, Eric Tremblay joined as a volunteer and developed a passion for promoting CJAI-FM. John Smol is a highly-respected professor in the Biology Department at Queen’s University in Kingston. 01 Oct 2021 | Dr. Gerald Evans – The Facts on COVID-19 | 00:33:54

Dr. Gerald Evans is Chair of the Division of Infectious Diseases, as well as a Professor at Queen’s University. He is also an attending physician in Infectious Diseases & Internal Medicine at Kingston General Hospital and Hotel Dieu Hospital located in Kingston. 10 Nov 2021 | Ali ten Hove – From the waters off Kingston to the waves off Fujisawa City | 00:24:55
Many of us spent time in August watching athletes compete at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Yes, the Games were postponed a year, and, yes, restrictions were very intense; but the athletes were focused. Canadian competitors made their fans back home very proud. Ali ten Hove was one of them! Ali raced, along with her team-mate, Mariah Millen, in the 49er FX sailing class (more on the class in the conversation). How does an athlete prepare for this kind of regatta? What was the experience in Japan like? And what happens when that athlete gets back home? Welcome back, Ali; and thanks for representing Kingston & Canada! Currently, he does the morning show at Rock107 in Belleville, Ontario, starting his day at 3:25am; yes, 3:25am, Monday to Friday. Even with that schedule, he finds time to devote to another passion – entertaining from the stage, when the pandemic will permit, as a hypnotist/mentalist. And outside of that, Buzz is very conscious about leaving a legacy; in his words, “trying to make at least one person smile each day”. 08 Dec 2021 | Spencer Evans - Having fun with the music | 00:30:25
Spencer Evans is no stranger to the music scene here in Kingston. He has played his clarinet, his piano, his accordion; he also sings, dances and prances, whenever the spirit moves him. He’s toured with The Cowboy Junkies, even making an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno’. Spencer was also part of a band entertaining Canadian Military Forces at the North Pole and in Bosnia. Like many other musicians, not being able to perform live has been incredibly frustrating. With things opening up a little, he looks forward to every opportunity to “supplying the music for people who are there to enjoy it”. 22 Dec 2021 | Captain Brian Johnson - "Ferry Tales" | 00:42:16
Working the Wolfe Islander for 35 years, Brian Johnson has had the opportunity to hear a lot of stories about the Island, the Ferry and the people who have travelled back and forth. If you’re not familiar with the geography, Wolfe Island is the largest among the Thousand Islands, stuck right between Kingston, Ontario, and Cape Vincent, New York; and where Lake Ontario meets the St. Lawrence River. Over the years, Brian has taken these tales and ‘put them to paper’. His stories have been included in several publications, and he is putting the finishing touches on a book that will focus on the water, and the people who travelled the water, around Wolfe Island. Definitely a ‘raconteur par excellence’, Captain Brian Johnson brings our history to life. Hope you enjoy this conversation. 05 Jan 2022 | Roland Billings – Definitely a three-pointer! | 00:34:05
In almost every community, there is some form of organized basketball. School gyms echo with the sounds of children of all ages, learning the game and the skills. Obviously, these leagues need volunteers to make things happen – coaches, referees, and administrators. In this episode, we focus on one such league and one very dedicated volunteer. His name is Roland Billings. Roland started off as a coach back in 1978 and has contributed many hours to the Pete Petersen Basketball League, serving as its President since 1992. Basketball and its impact on the kids is incredibly important to him, but it isn’t the only thing. He has given up some of the rest of his free time to the United Way, the Salvation Army and the Kingston Sports Hall of Fame. His contribution to the community was acknowledged earlier this year when the City of Kingston gave him a Distinguished Citizen Award. Cliff Edwards has been a guest on the podcast before, but I thought it might be interesting to catch up. For those who may not know Cliff, he was part of The Bells – a group that had a big hit back in the early seventies called Stay Awhile, a song that sold some three million copies worldwide. Long based in Gananoque, Ontario, he continues to write and record his own material; to produce shows featuring some of the great talent our area has to offer; and recently, to author a memoir in the form of stories about his experiences. Cliff also finds himself a welcome guest at a bar in Switzerland, where he takes the stage to sing in English for patrons who typically don’t speak the language! 02 Feb 2022 | Mark Potter – Promoting the History of Hockey | 00:45:17
Mark Potter has been a fixture on the Kingston sports scene for over 40 years. Many remember him from his days as an anchor on CKWS-TV, covering all sorts of local sports activities. But hockey seems to be #1 with Mark, and, right after signing up as a broadcaster, he became a volunteer with the Original Hockey Hall of Fame. He has sat around that table for four decades. Before there was a Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, and before the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame was established in Zurich, Switzerland, there was - and is – the Hall of Fame in Kingston. Mark has been passionate about sharing the history of the game and telling the stories of the hockey ‘greats’ who have taken to the ice. 16 Feb 2022 | Wally Viner – Putting Things in Place for Later On | 00:33:25
If you have lived in Kingston for any length of time, you’ll know the name Wally Viner. You may be familiar with his volunteer work with many different organizations in the City; you may also be familiar with his work as a practicing lawyer, for over 50 years. He may have retired from that profession, but he continues to be passionate about passing along information about – shall we say – ‘end of life paperwork’. Regardless of age, most adults have at least thought about writing a will or recruiting someone to act as a Power of Attorney or Executor. However, less than half of Canadians have done anything about it! When should you write a will? How detailed should it be? Who should act as your Power of Attorney? Which should you address first – a will or that Power of Attorney? Many questions! To help us with some of the answers, I sat down for a conversation with Wally, who now acts a Certified Executor Advisor. You have to be a passionate volunteer to work through the ‘ups & downs’ the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes has had to deal with over the last few years. Chris West is our guest in this episode. He is the Chair of the Board for the Museum. Having established itself decades ago, the Museum found itself without a home when the landlord, the Government of Canada, sold the building to a developer in 2016. After the 55 Ontario St. location sat vacant for three years, a generous donation allowed the Museum to buy the building. Chris and his group have been spending time working on the historical building, getting it ready to to make it Canada’s premier Museum for experiencing and preserving the maritime legacy – past, present, and future – of the largest interconnected bodies of fresh water in the world.
