17 Jan 2020Monitoring Your Kids Online00:15:59

Do you ever worry about what your kids are looking at online? Wondering how much to monitor and how? In this podcast we are going to get real about monitoring your kids online. Full disclosure, I am not an expert on this. I just wanted to share my own experience as a mom of two boys. So in no particular order, I've got a few things I want to share as far as monitoring kids online.

Lessons learned:

• Things change as your kids are in different age groups

• Every kid is different

• It’s important to pay attention

• Trust your kids to make good decisions

• We have a responsibility to teach them how to be responsible digital citizens

• Be open and honest and talk about the dangers

17 Apr 2020Social Media in Uncertain Times00:14:52

In the past few weeks, I've been asked a lot about how to navigate social media in these uncertain times. I've been doing a ton of training and zoom calls and webinars all about this topic. As much as social media brings us together in times like these, it's also really important to think about what to say, what to post, what's appropriate, and what's not appropriate.

In this podcast I will give you a few ideas, a few dos and don’ts, and some actionable tips as we all adjust to this new way of doing life and business.

Lessons learned:

• Be helpful

• It doesn’t need to be all about business

• Now is not the time for “marketing as usual”

• Reach out to your current and past clients and simply ask, “How are you?”, “Do you need anything?”, “Can I help you with anything?”, “Is there anything I can do for you?”

• Share your own story and struggles - the funny moments, what’s keeping your kids busy, etc.

• Share good news!

• Turn off automation

• Now is the time to create original content (and get on video!)

12 Nov 2021Fearlessly Authentic | Interview with Franke Joehl00:40:55

Fresh out of high school, Franke Joehl jumped into real estate and in the last 7 years - he has catapulted his career and is now the director of Operations for EXIT Realty Alabama and Mississippi as well as an amazing national speaker, coach, podcaster and more. Franke is also a long-time #GetSocialSmart Academy member and dear friend and I am thrilled to be able to highlight him in our Academy Spotlight Series!

In this podcast, we delve into some of the social media marketing strategies that are most effective now, common marketing mistakes seen as a real estate agent, some of Franke’s best Canva tips and how to be fearlessly authentic on camera and on social media.

I loved our conversation and know you will too!

About Franke:

Franke Joehl started in the real estate industry with EXIT Realty in 2015 at age 18 and through the years serving in multiple roles he has found his passion of teaching, coaching and developing agents and brokerages. Starting in the industry as an executive assistant for a team, becoming a licensed agent, transitioning to Director of Agent Development for a multi-location brokerage to ultimately moving into a leadership role with a regional sub franchisor, Franke has been on multiple sides of the real estate transaction and uses this knowledge learned to teach and train agents and brokers to success using social media.

26 Jul 2019Take Time to Stop and Smell the Roses00:13:02

Have you ever thought you were way too busy to indulge in a hobby? Between running a business and running a family alongside my husband – there aren’t too many hours left in the day. But over the past few years I started a side hobby that I have come to enjoy on a daily basis – gardening!

If you had mentioned this to me years ago, I would have laughed at you because I certainly did not have a green thumb. But my Papa did and so does my mom, and so genetically, perhaps I have a bit of that garden expertise within me!

I slowly discovered how much I loved spending 5-10 minutes at the end of each day on something that was just for me; not for my kids, not for my husband or my friends – just for me and I realized how valuable and recharging it is to find something for you and you alone. In this podcast I share this journey and all the parallels I see with gardening and life and business.

When you garden, you reap what you sow. You understand there is a season for everything and the value of patience.

I’d love to hear from you what it is that you carve out time for. Leave me a message over on my FB or Instagram!

Lessons learned:

  • I didn’t start my own business to not spend some time for myself. Create a small daily habit that is just for you each day.
  • Gardening taking patience, persistence and the realization that sometimes you do everything right and you still fail – such a great life lesson.
  • There is a season for everything – some people come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime!

12 Jun 2020Your Logo Doesn't Have To Be On Everything00:13:17

When it comes to marketing, I think a lot of times we get hung up on the fact that in order to brand ourselves we have to slap our logo on everything. I don't necessarily agree with that philosophy. I think branding and marketing is so much more than your logo!

To me, it's really the experience of what it feels like to work with your company, with your brand. In this podcast I share a few of my insights on building your brand online - without plastering your logo on everything!

Lessons learned:

• How you're crafting your messages is key - your content creates the experience for your audience.

• When thinking about your brand voice, it helps to think through who you are speaking to specifically.

• There’s a lot of power leaning into who you are...and who you are not.

• When you think about your content, whether it's videos, Facebook Live, podcast content, social media content, you want to write a book, whatever it might be, you want to think about who is that ideal person who's listening and who's watching.

03 Sep 2021Back to School After a Pandemic00:18:40

I think it’s safe to say that most parents and guardians I know feel a mixed bag of emotions when it comes to their kids being back in the classroom. Our two boys were home 17 months from the beginning of the pandemic to now. 17 months!

They spent their entire school year last year in remote learning.

As school approached - my husband and I had some mixed feelings - excitement, elation, nervousness and more. In this podcast, I share some of my unfiltered thoughts and would love your thoughts too.

I know we are not out of the woods and I am so grateful that our school district has so many important safety precautions in place including masking, social distancing, new ventilation systems and so much more.

Seeing all the teachers applauded that first day back brings tears to my eyes. I am so grateful for all the great teachers.

I am grateful that our kids are off Zoom and at least for now can be safely back in school with their friends. I’m grateful for our teachers recognizing that most kids have not been in a physical classroom in sometime. I’m grateful for them focusing not just on grades but on the social and relational part of school and interacting that feels a bit new and foreign now even to adults.

I am grateful! How are you feeling about all of this? I would love to hear from you - send me a message or tag me in a post over on IG @katielance.

27 Nov 2020Social Media for 202100:17:52

Are you ready to up your social media game in 2021? The new year is going to be here before we know it!

In this episode I’m going to give you some great tips, tools and strategies for creating your social media plan for 2021.

Lessons learned:

  • Create a Pillar Content Plan. Pick one type of pillar content (video, blog, podcast, etc.) that you can commit to creating at least once a month, preferably once a week.
  • Create a Distribution Plan. I believe in working smarter, not harder. If you’re going to create a piece of content, you can repurpose it in a multitude of ways. Create a plan for publishing and how you will distribute it in at least 4-5 ways.
  • Calendar Planning Your Next 12 Months. Finally, take a step back and plan out your next 12 months. Block out the days that are important to you - birthdays, vacations, etc. Put your publishing dates on your calendar, schedule time to batch create your content and add your distribution schedule.

Are you ready to learn all about Instagram Reels, YouTube and what is working right now to grow your real estate business? In this Flashback Friday episode I’m excited to share a great conversation I had a few weeks back with a dear friend of mine, Chavi Hohm, over on Instagram Live.

Chavi is co-founder of Team Diva Real Estate. Team Diva Real Estate is an incredible, powerhouse team in the greater Seattle area. I have known them for years and one of the things I absolutely love about Chavi and her partner Kim is how they are always raising the bar for the industry.

They are continuously putting incredible content out through social media, their blog and their email marketing efforts. Most recently, their content on Instagram Reels and YouTube have been a huge success. They have also made some new strategic changes to how they produce, create and distribute content - and Chavi was generous enough to share so many great tidbits!

03 Jul 2020Unconscious Bias in Real Estate00:51:19

In this podcast, I am excited to share with you a very special conversation that I had recently on Facebook Live. I had the pleasure of interviewing a dear friend of mine and an accomplished keynote speaker and author, Valerie Alexander. Valerie and I had a really important conversation about unconscious bias in real estate.

Currently, we are in the midst of a global pandemic and on top of that, we are in a state of social injustice. I know for myself, if I can be candid as a white woman, my eyes have been opened in a way they’ve never been opened before in terms of race and racism. I have been working on my own self to do a lot of work, to better educate myself and our family on how we can be better and how we can be actively anti-racist and how we can be a better ally.

I'm excited to share my journey here on the podcast. I’ll be sharing periodically from time to time my journey, because I think it's important to talk about it. This conversation is one of the first steps in that for me.

The reason why I reached out to Valerie is because Valerie is an amazing speaker. She gave an incredible TED talk a few years ago, all about unconscious bias. What's really interesting is the brain science behind unconscious bias. So I hope you are able to really listen and really, really give this interview the time and attention it deserves. I think it's a really, really important conversation.

19 Apr 2019Newlyweds, Moving Cross-Country and Living on Love00:15:28

After getting married in 2001 we took a big leap and decided to move cross country (more than 2,200 miles) from California to Indiana! We were young, newly married and looking to save a bit of money and have an adventure. This podcast episode is the story of that two-year period in our life from moving cross country (and back), living (literally) on love, discovering what really matters and getting my first real experiences speaking on stages up and down the state of Indiana. This journey really helped to set the stage for where we are now in our life and always reminds me to be thankful for how hard we’ve worked to get to where we are today!

Lessons learned:

  • There is so much value in leaning on your partner – “let the glue stick” (especially when you are newly married!)
  • The value of putting yourself out there - you only live once. You want to do something? Start with small actions today that will move you toward your goal tomorrow.
  • The value of what’s really important - stuff is just stuff. We started our journey living on an air mattress and going to garage sales for our first set of dishes. Stuff is just stuff - be grateful for what you have!

07 Jun 2019The More You Learn, The More You Earn00:18:21

In this podcast episode I share some of my very favorite books, online resources and events that have changed my life personally and professionally! The theme of this episode is, the more you learn, the more you earn. But beyond making money, the time to learn and improve is so important personally and professionally.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the books I mention in this episode:

“You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” - Secrets of Closing the Sale by Zig Ziglar

Love is something you do for someone else, not something you do for yourself.” - The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman

“I think a lot of people dream. And while they are busy dreaming, the really happy people, the really successful people, the really interesting, powerful, engaged people are busy doing.” - The Year of Yes by Shonda Rimes

Lessons learned

  • Make the time to continue to educate yourself
  • The more you learn, the more you earn
  • There is never an ideal time – make the time to read, go to events and pursue learning!

16 Jul 2021Social Media is a Marathon and Not a Sprint | Interview with Karen Bigos00:30:01

Social media is a marathon, not a sprint! No one knows this better than New Jersey real estate broker, Karen Bigos! Karen started on social media back in the day by organizing her high school reunion through a Facebook Group which led to one of her first million dollar deals, which she can attribute to her relationships through Facebook.

Since then, her following across her groups and platforms has grown to more than 18,000 followers and she can directly attribute more than $100M dollars in business from social media!

In this podcast, Karen shares so many incredible stories and truths about what it takes to be a successful and busy Realtor while also leveraging the power of social media. Karen has been a broker for more than 37 years and is now the co-founder of Towne Realty Group.

Karen will be the first to tell you - success does not happen overnight. It takes time, effort and organization! In this podcast Karen shares her tips and strategies for making the most out of social media, how social media has fortified her relationships and impacted her business, how she reaches people where they are (phone, text, social media) and more. We also chatted about how this past year or so it was not “business as usual” on social media and how she navigated those challenges.

What I took away from this interview was that Karen has a true sense of who she wants to work with and who she can best serve. Your vibe attracts your tribe! Karen believes in having meaningful connections - not just liking a bunch of things on Facebook but being intentional and connecting with people on and offline.

Karen’s advice for agent’s overwhelmed with social media? Ask yourself WHY are you doing what you are doing? What are you trying to accomplish? Also, remember you can’t be everywhere. Be a giver! Give and you will receive!

08 Nov 2019Traveling Secrets for Keeping Your Sanity00:14:05

Do you travel a lot for work or personally? Or, are you someone that has a little bit of anxiety when it comes to traveling? I spend a lot of time on the road (or in the air) speaking and between traveling for business and family vacations with my boys – I’ve collected a few of my favorite traveling tips – to keep you sane, no matter what!

  1. Get to the airport early – don’t cut it too short. Get there early without stressing out. Use the extra time to grab a bite to eat, get some work done, etc. It is worth it!
  2. When booking travel – try to avoid traffic times. Think about what time you will be commuting or driving to your airport, home or hotel.
  3. If you can afford it - book a better seat! The extra amount of legroom can make a big difference especially if you have to get work done on the plane or are traveling with small children. You don’t have to spring for first class but look into business class (especially if you are flying more than 3-4 hours!)
  4. Get a credit card to get miles and points. Having a credit card that you use for personal or business that gets you points – makes a big difference. Only do this if this is financially feasible for you. Having an airline (or hotel) specific credit card many times will let you book a better seat or book a better room.
  5. Pick one airline and stick with it – the perks add up.
  6. Bring bottle water and snacks with you. Never rely on the snack cart on the airplane – but don’t bring your McDonald’s or smelly burritos onboard – please! Smells great to you – not so great to everyone else 4 hours later!
  7. Don't over pack. Layering is key. Keep all your important things in the same place each time. Don’t check your important documents or medicine.
  8. Bonus: Get TSA Pre-Check and/or Clear – it makes traveling SO much easier!

It’s easy to just turn into a task-master when we run a business, or work for someone else, or run a family. But in this episode, I challenge you to go beyond tasks and think about being a visionary.

What do you love to do? What are you good at? Where do you want to be in 5-10 years personally and professionally?

Don’t be a slave to your email. You can become the visionary you want to be – I promise!

Lessons learned

  • Time block – plan ahead for planning, plan out big chunks of time for creative work
  • Don’t check your email all day long – don’t let your email become your to-do list
  • Think long term – where do you want to be in 5 years and work back from there

31 May 2019How We Built Our Team00:22:01

Have you ever thought about building a team or are ready to grow your team? In this episode I share my thoughts on building and maintaining a team, how we find great people, what happens when your business evolves and more.

When I started our company, it was “me, myself and I” and as the business grew it got to the point where I started missing things. Things started to fall through the cracks – and I knew it was time to bring on someone to help. Over time, our team has evolved and I’m so thankful for everyone who has worked with us – now and in the past. We’ve been fortunate to work with some great people.

As we’ve grown our small but mighty virtual team – we believe in growing slowly to build stability and to maintain a sustainable environment. How do we hire? Simple – we look for good people. Character counts! We also look for people with a strong work ethic – people who do what they say they are going to do, people who don’t "pass the buck," but take responsibility. At the end of the day, businesses grow and change and sometimes what you need when you start isn’t what you need a few years later – and that is ok!

It’s also super important to set up systems and treat your business like a business. Pay people on time. Have your systems in place like: NDA’s for your team, contracts for your team members and clients, payment systems (not through Venmo or PayPal but through a business banking account!) We love using tools like Asana for project management and the Voxer mobile app to communicate quickly when needed.

Growing your team is an evolution and a big part of that for me has been my own personal development. Join me for my next episode where I talk about how I invest in myself - professionally and personally through reading, courses, and more!

Lessons learned:

1. Treat your business like a business.

2. Hire for your weaknesses. Don’t try to do it all. What do YOU do that you are really good at that moves things forward?

3. Systems are key. When you 1st start – everything is in your head. Utilize project management tools to help you be organized. Systematize your business.

16 Apr 2021How to Leverage Video on Facebook and YouTube to Build Your Real Estate Business | Interview with Julie Ziemelis00:42:54

Julie Ziemelis is the founder of Ziemelis Communications and Founder of 365Hawaii on YouTube. She has been vlogging for almost three years and creating weekly Hawaii lifestyle, real estate and moving videos for a year.

She and her husband now have over 4000 subscribers, over 10,000 views on many of their videos and have parlayed the video success into a real estate referral business garnering five closings a month.

Julie is also an author of three Hawaii based moving/real estate/lifestyle books, two private Facebook groups with over 1.5k members each, and a popular lifestyle blog “365 Things to Do in Kona” with over 25,000 fans.

Lessons and takeaways from Julie:

  • Tell the story of your city or the area you live in. Be the expert!
  • Play to the masses of NONE for a while - if you build it they will come.
  • Someone should be the resource about your local area and lifestyle - why not you?! You are the expert.
  • You have to believe and you have to put in the work.
  • Lifestyle blogging and videos are key - people don’t always want to hear about a house, they want to hear about the town they live in or the town they want to live in.
  • When people want to learn something they will binge watch it and they are better leads because they are more self-educated about the area.
  • Cast a wide net with your content - post your content to YouTube, Facebook, your blog, write an ebook!
  • Own your content. Become “the guy or gal” that shows up when people are
  • Googling your town.

How can you build trust with your marketing when everyone is pitching you someone - virtually everywhere? This is exactly what we covered in this podcast which is a special Facebook Live interview I did a few weeks ago with one of my all time favorite keynote speakers and authors, Ron Tite.

I first met Ron a few years back. I heard him speaking at an event and I was totally blown away - he’s one of the most talented keynote speakers I’ve met! So, when his book, “Think Do Say” came out last year I knew I had to get a copy of it and I have since read the book a few times!

If you are in marketing, if you are a real estate agent, if you ever thought about how to market your product or service or yourself or build a business in a really smart and thoughtful way, you will love this podcast interview!

05 Nov 2021Leadership at Work and at Home | Interview with Adam Contos00:34:02

Have you thought about what it takes to be a great leader? In today’s podcast, I have the pleasure of interviewing the CEO of RE/MAX Holdings and the author of the new book, “Start with a WIN!” - Adam Contos.

We had a great conversation about how to avoid overwhelm, combat stress, goal-setting for 2022 and how to step into leadership at home or in business.

I loved chatting with Adam and I know you will enjoy this fantastic conversation!

About Adam:

Adam Contos, CEO of RE/MAX Holdings, Inc, provides strategic direction on major corporate initiatives for two innovative, action-oriented franchise brands – RE/MAX and Motto Mortgage. RE/MAX, a global force of 140,000+ agents in over 110 countries, and Motto, the first of its kind franchise mortgage brokerage model - one of the fastest growing franchise brands in any industry, both thrive as thoroughly modern operations. Their cultures reflect the traits of their CEO, who embodies these three roles:

  • Lifelong learner – Contos, who holds an MBA, is driven to grow as a person and professional every single day.
  • Generous sharer – Offering daily insights through his “Start With a Win” podcast, live speeches, video addresses and social media content.
  • Action taker – Contos is the sort of leader who actually does what he encourages others to do. Whether it’s showing up at the gym or using video to build community.
  • Affecting positive change throughout the real estate and mortgage brokerage industries, Contos is a maverick among global corporate leaders. A believer that people mirror the behavior of their leader, Contos doesn’t just talk the talk—he leads by example. Contos’ self-discipline and work ethic stems from his background as a former Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps and SWAT commander.

10 May 2019How My Love of Online Learning Inspired Our #GetSocialSmart Academy00:15:30

This podcast episode is the back-story of how I became so inspired with online learning that it helped transform our business by creating our #GetSocialSmart Academy. I was inspired early on from online marketing pioneer, Laura Roeder who is now the founder of MeetEdgar. I remember listening to webinars she hosted nearly a decade ago and being inspired, blown away, I thought to myself, “This is such a great way to learn. Here I am in my home office and fuzzy slippers. I would love to run a business one day to be able to offer this type learning!” Fast-forward to my first webinar I ever hosted back when I worked for Inman News. I was so nervous and quickly realized how different webinars were from speaking onstage. But here’s the truth – we live in an on-demand world with Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and others. Not only that, but attention is truly the name of the game. When someone signs up for your webinar and then they choose to attend live, they are choosing to spend an hour with you - that is a really big deal!

This epiphany inspired our first iteration of #GetSocialSmart – our first 6-week course which was cobbled together with Go To Meeting, Dropbox, Mailchimp – but guess what? It worked! And, more importantly, it served a huge need. In our next episode, you will hear more about that story!

Lessons learned:

  • Give people more than they expect. Under-promise and over-deliver.
  • Find your voice. Be brave and vulnerable.
  • The riches are in the niches. When you lean into who you are and who you are not, so much is possible!

10 Jan 2020How to Create Great Work00:09:42

A few years back I saw a video that really inspired me. The video was by Ira Glass, an American public radio personality and host of This American Life.

The video is all about storytelling and doing creative work. One of the things he talks about in this video is the idea that we all want to do great work - it doesn't matter what industry we're in.

Maybe it's writing a book, maybe it's launching a podcast, maybe it’s putting out video content or improving our marketing, but most of us won’t produce great work out of the gate.

We all have to start somewhere and do the work - and at first the work might be bad. It might be really bad. But if you don't actually do the work, it's not going to happen and you're not going to have that success that you really want to. You've got to get through doing really bad work to get to the great stuff!

Lessons learned:

• Great work doesn’t happen overnight. We all have to start somewhere.

• You have to go through actually creating work to get better.

• We shouldn’t compare ourselves to other people.

• You can read the books, you can listen to the videos, you can go to events, you can get all fired up...but if you don't actually do the work, it's not going to happen.

My husband is my partner in life and business and it all started in 2001 in a Yahoo chat room! Yep, I met my husband online, in a chat room. Needless to say, I think my family and friends were worried – but as the saying goes, ‘when you know, you know.’ This podcast is the story of us – before we had our company and before we had kids. It’s the story of how two people met online, and within six months were married - and now seventeen years later are still happily married! On a side note – if you like romantic comedy movie references – you’ll love this episode.

19 Jul 2019The Why and How to Lean Into Your Niche Market00:14:30

If you need heart surgery do you want a general surgeon or do you want the best heart surgeon you can find? No one wants to hire a generalist – we want to hire the best specialist we can find right?

The riches are in the niches and in this episode I share my own journey in trying to be “all things to all people” and the transformation that came to my business when I really focused on my core audience, where I was known, in the real estate space!

After you take a listen, I’d love to hear from you and hear your struggles with this – message me on FB or Instagram!

Lessons learned

  • No one wants to hire a generalist. Be specific.
  • Ask yourself, “Who do you love working with (or, not?)” This will give you some insight on who your ideal client is.
  • What are the questions people ask you all the time? This answer can help you to form your niche!

18 Sep 2020Creating a Library of Content Versus More Noise00:10:52

Are you creating a library of content or are you just creating more noise? As we think about content marketing and we think about different ways to create content, there's a lot of noise out there.

It's important when you're thinking about content to think about creating content that is relevant and timely, that speaks to what is happening now but is also timeless. This episode shares a few of my tips for creating this type of quality content - not just more noise.

Lessons learned:

• Focus on creating pillar content.

• Think about the purpose of creating your content.

• What are the questions you get asked all of the time?

• What's happening now?

• What will always be relevant?

• Lean into who you are and who you're not. Find your niche and layer in your personality.

25 Oct 2019Quality of Life as an Entrepreneur00:16:34

In this episode, I’m sharing how to achieve quality of life as an entrepreneur. Now, I'm smiling because quality of life, I think, is one of those things that we all strive to accomplish. We strive to achieve. We want to be in balance with our family and business.

When I started my own company in 2012, and one of the reasons why my husband and I are so passionate about running our business, and one of the reasons why we are in this for the long haul, is quality of life.

We make sure that we take the time to plan out our vacations and there's certain things that are non-negotiable when it comes to our family and our kids. I know this is probably not rocket science, but if it's not on my calendar, it usually doesn't happen. So getting things scheduled makes a really, really big difference.

The next thing is what are your priorities? I know for a very long time, I mean basically since I had kids, I would say my kids are first. But then what would happen is something would come up. I'd have a really important call from a client or an amazing speaking opportunity, and all of a sudden my kids were important, but they kind of got pushed to the side because of this great opportunity. I've really begun to realize is that when you say that something is your most important thing, you have to ask yourself, do your actions speak louder than your words?

At the end of the day, are you going to wish that you spent more time at the office? Am I going to wish I spent more time on stage? No. So having those priorities in place is really important.

30 Jul 2021Kindness Counts | Interview with Nestor Herrera and Michelle Phillips-Herrera00:33:28

We had a great conversation on the podcast about working with your spouse, understanding the art of work and life balance and how to ‘stay in your lane.’

We also talked about how they use social media to grow their business. Nestor and Michelle have always stood out to me over the years because of their generosity of spirit and kind hearts. In this podcast they share how they too believe in the philosophy, “Done is better than perfect” and although sometimes we are afraid to put ourselves out there - the rewards outweigh the risks!

You can tell Nestor and Michelle like to have a lot of fun but they are consummate professionals too and believe wholeheartedly that agents need to treat this profession seriously and give it the respect it deserves. I couldn’t agree more!

About Nestor and Michelle:

NESTOR: Born and raised in Orange County, Nestor's passion for creating a strong community in Irvine is obvious. His contractual expertise allows him to prevent problems before they occur, creating a sense of ease among his clients. His positivity and ability to visualize success make him an excellent asset to the team he shares with Michelle in both work and life. Nestor's dedication to the people around him is apparent in everything he does, so making Orange County a great place comes naturally.

MICHELLE: Michelle grew up in Pasadena and is a happy Irvine transplant, where she shares Nestor's passion for creating great communities. In her more than 15 years of real estate experience in Orange County, Michelle has formed honest relationships with her clients, ensuring everyone has the facts needed to make the best decisions. One of her favorite things about living in Irvine is having access to the various trails and parks that the city has to offer. She works hard to bring her love of the area to other people looking for homes. Michelle and Nestor agree that real estate is about more than just buying and selling homes, it is about building community.

05 Jul 2019Unplugging for a Week00:16:05

When is the last time you unplugged? Truly unplugged? Recently, we took an amazing Disney Cruise to Alaska. It was an incredible vacation; truly a bucket list item. During that time, I decided to completely unplug; no social media, no email – nothing! This was the first time in nearly ten years that I unplugged and ‘went off the grid.’

We said to ourselves, “What if put our out of office on and just went on vacation like it was 1990?” The good news – we did it! Listen to the full podcast and let me know your thoughts and I’d love to hear over on Facebook or Instagram when was the last time YOU unplugged?

Lessons learned

  • You aren’t that important LOL. Ok, yes of course you are important – but you aren’t so important you can’t take a few days offline, right?! You can do this! Set the right expectations with your clients and/or colleagues and just do it!
  • Be in the moment – this is the best gift you can give those around you.
  • Build your systems, your resources and your team to be able to do this effectively.
  • Don’t be so busy watching other people’s lives that you aren’t living yours.
  • Are you looking at your device out of habit or ON PURPOSE?

09 Aug 2019Nothing Replaces Time in Your Business00:09:54

Time is our greatest ally and when it comes to business (and life) - sometimes we have to learn by doing. By sticking it out. By doing things we aren’t sure we can (or want to do.)

In this podcast I talk about the value of learning what we are good at, what we aren’t, who we want to work with, who we don’t, who we say yes to and who we say no to.

I talk about the value of just sticking it out - not too many people do! Time is everything in business and life!

Lessons learned

  • Give yourself grace
  • Get a support network – colleagues, friends, coach
  • Be realistic

12 Mar 2021The Personal is Political | Resiliency, Activism, Innovative Marketing, Parenting and More! | Interview with Team Diva Real Estate00:56:29

The Divas (aka Chavi and Kim) are founders and leaders of the very successful real estate team, Team Diva Real Estate, in Seattle, WA.

Years ago the Divas wanted to create a real estate movement that better reflected their community. It was extremely important to the Divas that a black person can go into real estate and become a top producer. Or, a young person with a creative background can have a healthy career. Over the years the Divas have taken this vision and have grown a top producing team at Coldwell Banker.

They have been recognized by Inman News twice for their Innovation practices. In addition to these awards, the Divas have stayed rooted in the activism of their community. In 2012 they helped to lead the effort to pass marriage equality.

For years they brought attention to the growing homeless issues (specifically LGBTQ youth) in Seattle. They also went against their own association to advocate for more funding for education. Over the last few years, the Divas have focused on fundraising, organizing, and leading voter mobilization efforts to support disenfranchised voters in our country. Black Lives Matters every day. Team Diva recognizes that the real estate industry practices have resulted in the displacement of the Black community in Seattle through gentrification and that we conduct business on land that was stolen from the Duwamish (doo-WAH-mish) people.

In this episode the Divas and I chat about real estate, activism, politics, LGBTQ, inclusion, raising a middle schooler during a pandemic...and so much more!

Big thanks to Chavi and Kim for this candid conversation!

11 Oct 2019How I Got Into Speaking00:11:05

In today's episode I'm going to share with you some of the backstory of how I got into speaking and give you some tips for how you can get into speaking if you are interested in becoming a professional speaker. As I look through my career, I was really fortunate because I was given a lot of opportunities early on in my career to be in front of a lot of people. Today, a big part of my business is speaking and I've been fortunate to speak on stages, literally all over the world stages large and small. Here are a few tips for honing your craft as a professional speaker: Tip One: Always try to put yourself in a position where you are in front of people. Raise your hand and volunteer for opportunities - look for opportunities local to you. Tip Two: Think about what your message is about. Do you want to teach? Is it something inspirational? Is it something educational? Is it something funny? Is it a life lesson? Is it a skill? What is that people ask you all the time? What are things that you're the most passionate about? Tip Three: Start to put some of that content out there in the form of video content. If you want to become a subject matter expert on a certain topic or whatever it is that you want to talk about, start thinking about what type of video content can you start to create on a consistent basis. Speaking is something that I truly love and enjoy. At the risk of sounding corny, I truly feel at home on a stage. So if speaking is something you're curious about and you'd like me to talk more about that, I'm happy to share more about that. Just let me know!

13 Nov 2020Secrets to How I Increased My Instagram Engagement00:11:53

Have you ever wondered what happens behind-the-scenes of a growing Instagram account? Instagram is one of my favorite places to be and there is a lot going on with the platform.

In this episode I’m sharing how I’ve successfully grown my Instagram following and 3 tips that have helped me not just grow, but also increase my engagement on Instagram.

Lessons learned:

  • Pay attention to new trends. Embracing new features like IGTV and Reels can have a huge impact on your engagement. Is there an opportunity to repurpose your content into Reels content?
  • Post consistently. From my own experience, posting 3-5 times a week in my feed has made a big difference. Don’t just post to post - give people a reason to like, share and save. Also be consistent commenting back and engaging with other people’s posts.
  • Document on your Stories. Every time you post on your Stories, you move your bubble to the top of people’s feed. I like to post 5-10 Stories throughout the day. Have fun with your Stories!

This year in 2021 we celebrated our 9-year business anniversary and our 20-year wedding anniversary! We are so grateful for our business (we are having our best year ever and we are so grateful for our clients and our team!)

We are incredibly grateful for our health, our faith, our two amazing boys who are growing like weeds and the opportunities to travel again.

21 Jun 2024 In the Room Where It Happens: Insights from Mike Ganino's Mike Drop Era Retreat00:38:32

Have you ever gone to an event and just knew it was going to be life-changing? That is how I felt after leaving my dear friend Mike Ganino’s Mike Drop Era retreat in New York City.

I knew I had to record a podcast for you where I unpacked my notes and take-aways. In this raw (and sometimes messy) episode - I recapped my key takeaways from the event, which featured dynamic discussions on storytelling, personal branding, and the power of intentional communication with Mike and three expert guest speakers.

Stories build connections - and I am so excited to share some insights I learned on how storytelling captivates your audience. I share tips from:

  • Marisa Corcoran about the art of copywriting and how giving your content a unique name can clarify your message.
  • Laura Gassner Otting and the strategies for gaining ultimate control over your content to connect freely and authentically with your audience.
  • Erica Reitman on creating a 'category of one'—establishing a personal brand so distinct, no one could possibly confuse you with anyone else.

Whether you’re looking to refine your brand or enhance your storytelling techniques, I hope you enjoy listening to my takeaways - and behind the scenes of this incredibly AWESOME event!

At the end of the day it reminded me of the power of being “in the room where it happens” - there is so much magic that happens in a small group mastermind!

P.S. We have a few spots left for our #GetSocialSmart Vegas Mastermind this Fall - we’d love to have you there - check out the details here!

09 Apr 2021Becoming a Better Storyteller | Interview with Mike Ganino00:49:20

Mike Ganino is a storytelling and communication expert who hosts The Mike Drop Moment podcast. He’s been named a Top 10 Public Speaking Coach by Yahoo Finance, and California’s Best Speaking and Communication Coach by Corporate Vision Magazine.

Mike is an author, former Executive Producer of TEDxCambridge and has been named a Top 30 Speaker by Global Guru. He teaches storytelling, presence, and public speaking to some of the biggest names and brands. He’s a trained actor and coach from the World Famous Second City, Improv Olympics, and Upright Citizen’s Brigade.

In addition to his track record as an executive in the hotel, restaurant, retail, and tech industries, Mike’s worked with organizations like Disney, American Century Investments, American Marketing Association, and UCLA.

Lessons learned from Mike:

  • If we are going to get ourselves out of our situation or into a new place it’s going to be words we say and the presence we have and that’s what I do now!
  • We are all public speaking all the time. Social media is speaking. Sharing our ideas, stories and our presence. All of these are opportunities to think about public speaking.
  • What people really want is you - your take on things, your opinion on things.
  • You may forget the facts and figures from what you are supposed to say but you’ll never forget your stories or how you feel.
  • Context is key.
  • Good stories are hard to define but we know when we’ve heard it.
  • Connect it to your through line - if a story isn’t working you have to think if it’s connected to who you are. If I didn’t hear your voice but I heard your words - would I know that is YOUR message?
  • The other key to great storytelling is revealing something about yourself.
  • You don’t have to hide who you are.
  • There are people out there who need to hear what you say and who will love you more for it!

27 Sep 2019How I Get Ready for a Presentation00:11:16

As a professional speaker, I have been speaking for years and I speak to all different size audiences from a few hundred to a few thousand. And although oftentimes I'm giving similar presentations, every presentation is different because every audience is different, every group is different, and it's something I take a lot of pride in.

I would say over the past few years, I've really been focused on honing my craft and really honing how I think about presentations -  honing my stage presence and really thinking about the whole process. In fact, last year I was so fortunate to attend a great event through Heroic Public Speaking.  This has been a great resource for me to really improve my presentation skills.

Lessons learned

  • Be prepared – be over-prepared.
  • Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse!

10 Dec 2021Social Media with Intention | Interview with Eileen Lacerte00:37:44

I am excited to share with you an interview I did recently with a long-time member of our

#GetSocialSmart Academy and real estate broker - Eileen Lacerte. In this interview

Eileen shares her tips and advice for how she leverages video and email marketing to

stay top of mind for her clients and people who may be buying or selling luxury

properties in Hawaii.

Eileen has learned the fine art of providing truly helpful information to her clients in such

a non salesy way that she is truly known practically everywhere she goes. Eileen also

shares how the Academy has impacted her bottom line including how one seven

second video ended up helping her close a $15M dollar real estate deal! I know you will

enjoy the interview as much as I did. Thank you Eileen!

About Eileen:

Eileen Lacerte got started in real estate 41 years ago. Eileen's father was in the military,

so her family moved frequently when she was young. Eileen learned a lot from watching

her father fix up old homes. "Every time we moved, he bought a fixer-upper and spent

the next couple years fixing it, and sold it when we left," she says. "Then we moved on

to the next house. I think my interest in houses started there." In addition to her depth of

knowledge and experience, Eileen emphasizes the relationship aspect of her business.

Over her years in resort real estate, she has built strong connections with her clients,

and her dedication has earned her a place in the Hall of Fame for Hawaii's Top 100

Realtors®.

01 Oct 2021Getting Back Onstage After 18 Months (and, How I Prepare for a Keynote)00:22:26

In this podcast, I share a few thoughts about how events have evolved, my thoughts around in-person and virtual events, what it was like to be back onstage, and some behind-the-scenes into how I prepare for a new keynote.

Helpful tips to prepare for a keynote:

  • Get to the venue early - do a sound and tech check. Get onstage. Walk the stage. Get to know your A/V team - they are your best friends. Ask ahead of time what the stage set-up will look like - where are the screens? What is the seating?
  • Go through your slides onstage - check your videos if you are playing videos.
  • Rehearse - physically practice, stand up, wear the shoes you will wear onstage.
  • I start creating a keynote by doing a brain dump first: my older content, stats, stories, examples, etc. What do you already have that you can repurpose?
  • Be cognizant of your time constraints with your presentation. Prepare to have to cut or add time. Be respectful and do not go over with your time!
  • What you wear onstage is important - can you move? Are you comfortable?
  • I don’t script my talks - prepared but not scripted. I do heavily prepare for my opening and closing. I rehearse those over and over!
  • Be prepared for anything! You never know what will happen!
  • I use slides - but less is more. I use PowerPoint - but I create all of my slides within Canva. Slides are essentially images - so they don’t look distorted on someone else’s computer. Your slides should be a prompt.

Additional thoughts:

As we move into this ‘post-pandemic’ era - I think it’s important personally to be prepared for events by understanding the protocols in place, be prepared with items such as masks, sanitizer, and your vaccination card. Also, be prepared ahead of time with your own personal boundaries. What are you comfortable with? Handshaking? Hugs? Selfies? How will you navigate that? I think it’s important to make those decisions ahead of time.

What events are you going to? If you are looking for a speaker - I would love to be considered!

When someone shows you who they are, believe them! This is one of those tough love lessons that I have to remind myself over and over again.

In this episode, I’m sharing this important life lesson that has benefited me in relationships over the years, both personally and professionally.

Lessons learned:

• People are who they are and sometimes they’re “just not into you.”

• Actions speak louder than words.

• If something is really important to someone, they will make the effort.

• Not everyone is going to like you and that’s okay.

02 Jul 2021How to Actually Take a Vacation (and, Unplug as an Entrepreneur!)00:17:37

Here is how we think about work/life balance, planning time for vacations and logistically how to unplug.

Lessons learned:

  • Plan vacations and important days off in advance – block them off first when you are doing your planning!
  • Have systems in place that work even when you aren’t. Systemize your business
  • Set boundaries – what will your vacation look like?
  • Give yourself time on the front end and the back end of your vacation. It’s like a runway!

16 Oct 2020How to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others00:08:01

If you’re like me, you might tend to compare yourself to other people. I think it’s part of human nature, and especially with social media, we are exposed to the highlight reels of other people’s lives. What we tend to see are the successes but what we don’t see are the struggles, the heartbreaks, the blood, sweat and tears that it took to get to that success.

In today’s podcast I’m sharing how I struggle with comparison and a few tips that have helped me to have some perspective.

Lessons learned:

  • Social media is a ‘highlight reel’ of our lives
  • We often see the successes - not the struggles
  • Don’t compare your own life to someone else’s highlight reel
  • We are all running our own races
  • We may need to unfollow or ‘snooze’ someone if it’s affecting us negatively

06 Dec 2019How I Really Feel About TikTok00:14:18

Everyone keeps asking me how I really think about TikTok – so here we go! In this episode I dive into answering questions like:

“Should I be on it? Should I let my kids use it? Should Realtors be on it?” (and much more.)

My answer may surprise you but if you are a mom, a real estate pro or just curious in general what the heck TikTok is and if you should be on it – take a listen!

Lessons learned:

  • Trust your kids but always check out a new app before letting them download something new. For us, we believe in trusting our kids but also being aware of what may or may not be appropriate for them to watch. It’s a personal decision and you have to do what is right for your family!
  • Just because something is “new and shiny” – doesn’t mean it is right for you and your business. Is your potential customer on the platform? Who are you trying to attract?
  • We can learn a lot about video from TikTok – if anything, the app is super entertaining!

08 Oct 2021Wrap Your Goals In Grace | Interview with Stephanie Lanier00:41:54

At the end of our lives, no one will wish that we “spent more time at the office.” Quality of life and leading a family first business is what it is all about!

I had the pleasure of speaking with dear friend and long-time Realtor, Stephanie Lanier, about how she switched from a career in social work into real estate after a devastating medical diagnosis for her son.

Stephanie is a true inspiration and in this podcast, she shares her experience as a special needs mom and how her and her husband Andrew built their real estate business around the idea of family first. From Sunday night weekly dinners to building a team early-on to support their goals - it’s all about family!

As Stephanie says, “It’s messy and hard but you can do both with a team.”

Stephanie talks about how she balances work and family and how it’s less about hustle culture and more about designing the life you love and wrapping your goals in grace. Grace for team members when they are going through something challenging, grace for clients and grace for each other.

Stephanie is also so incredibly smart and creative when it comes to marketing and providing true value to her clients and her referral partners. I loved hearing her talk about her passion project, The Inspiration Lab, and how she is impacting her fellow colleagues.

Also, make sure you listen to the end to hear how she has developed unique guides that have helped her clients in so many ways. This one idea is something I think so many Realtors could implement in their local markets.

Thank you Stephanie for being on our show!

About Stephanie:

Many words describe Stephanie Lanier: wife, mom, REALTOR®, entrepreneur, blogger, special needs advocate. Yet being a “wholehearted tribe builder” is the thread connecting all of the experiences and creations in her life.

Stephanie’s life-changing moments have fueled a search for connection, purpose, and spaces for vulnerability. In 2012, she co-founded the Wilmington-based Lanier Property

Group alongside her husband, Andrew. In 2020, Lanier Property Group merged with Intracoastal Realty.

In 2015, Stephanie created The Inspiration Lab, which offers an authentic place for women to learn and be inspired by one another, by helping women foster meaningful connections through events, online workshops, and original workbooks.

20 Nov 2020Parenting During a Pandemic (an Update)00:11:53

Are you parenting during this pandemic? I’ve shared a few updates this year about our family and how we are managing through this time. But it has been a few months so today I’m sharing an update.

I’ll be honest, this year has been tough. I have to say our boys have been so resilient. In this podcast I’m sharing a few things that have worked well for us, as well as a few that have not.

Lessons learned:

  • Screen time. We still monitor screen time, but we’ve also become more flexible. Video games have become a great way for our boys to stay connected with their friends.
  • Routines. For our family, we thrive on routines. We are huge believers that kids need to do chores. We also come together every night for dinner. I also have a special night time routine of reading to my boys each night.
  • Having a pet has been huge! If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you’ve seen our cute kitty cat, Rex. He’s been so wonderful to have during this time and brought us so much joy!
  • Getting outside. Getting out every day - playing baseball, taking walks, riding scooters. Getting fresh air every day has been so important.
  • Being on the same team. This year we are spending more time together as a family than we probably ever will. Coming together and checking in with each other and working together as a team has been key for us.

29 Jan 2021Social Media Strategy in 2021 - Interview with Stephanie Chumbley00:42:25

Today, I am excited to share my interview with Stephanie Chumbley, the Director of Social Media & Education for Chicago Title of Oregon. Stephanie is a real estate speaker, social media specialist, Apple enthusiast and educator from the Pacific Northwest.

She’s an early adopter of technology and enjoys exploring new apps, tech tools and loves to help Realtors and lenders learn how to effectively use social media and technology to generate business.

Stephanie and I had a great conversation about the biggest trends for social media for Realtors and social media for real estate agents in 2021, new emerging platforms like Clubhouse and Instagram Reels, some of the biggest mistakes we see Realtors making and some of our favorite apps right now.

I know you will learn so much from Stephanie in this conversation and big thanks to her for sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm!

Lessons learned:

  • Be where your clients are
  • Learn one new skill per month
  • Buddy up with a friend for accountability
  • Time-block your schedule
  • Look at holidays and then pick some to highlight on social media that are
  • relevant to your brand
  • Running FB ads to your email database with a Happy New Year message (not
  • every post or ad needs to be branded or have a call to action)
  • If you are an Apple user - iCloud storage is key!

13 Mar 2020CEO Mindset When It Comes to Being a Mom00:13:02

In this episode we're going to talk about having a CEO mindset when it comes to being a mom.

As a lot of you know, I am a mom to two awesome boys and I am CEO and cofounder of our company.

I think a lot of times when it comes to being a mom or a parent or guardian, let's just be honest, it's overwhelming. What I've tried to do to make it a little bit more manageable and less stressful for me and our family is to try to have a CEO mindset.

Lessons learned:

• You can’t do it all.

• Try to stay as organized as possible and put it on the calendar.

• It takes a village.

• Stay in your zone of genius.

• Stop feeling guilty.

• Time block.

• As soon as you’ve got it figured out, it changes.

24 Jul 2020Virtual Open House Mastery00:12:46

In today’s episode I want to take you behind-the-scenes and talk a little bit about virtual open house mastery. In the past few months, I have taught thousands, probably close to tens of thousands of agents, how to do a virtual open house specifically through Facebook Live.

In this episode I’m sharing what I’m seeing work really well for agents, the systems and steps that we recommend, and tips and best practices to help you master your virtual open house skills.

Lessons learned:

• It’s a 3-part system (promote, show up, promote after)

• What are you going to do before to get people to show up and tune in to your Facebook Live? What are you going to do during to keep people engaged and to watch the replay as well. Finally, what are you going to do afterwards to follow up?

• Use other platforms (such as Instagram) and email to promote your Facebook Live ahead of time.

• It’s all about storytelling - don’t just tell the facts of the home, tell the story!

• Practice, practice, practice. Going live can be nerve-wracking, but the more often you do it, the easier it gets and the better you get!

09 Mar 2022Consistency is the Name of the Game | Interview with Jim Chu00:20:50

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing #GetSocialSmart Academy member, Jim Chu for our monthly Academy Spotlight series!

Jim has been in real estate about six years, and is a real estate salesperson with Royal LePage Real Estate Services in Mississauga, Ontario - Canada. He’s also been a part of our Academy for almost a year and a half.

In our conversation we talked about his vast experience before real estate and how that has impacted his business. Jim also shared his journey with social media, what is working for him right now with video marketing, Instagram and so much more. We also talked about being consistent and how having a plan is key!

I know you will enjoy the interview! Check it out on our YouTube channel and on our podcast!

About Jim:

Jim had vast experience in many fields prior to entering the world of real estate.

He initially worked in the restaurant field including a golf country club, Greek/ Mediterranean restaurant, English pub, sports bar and a TexMex restaurant which later took him into wine sales - where he learned a lot about customer service and the need to hustle.

Jim’s career then took him into a production supervisor position in an instant printing company where he learned logistics, organization skills and scheduling. Skills that serve him well today. He also worked as a charter bus driver touring groups to Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, New York City, Washington D.C., Chicago, Boston and many other cities. He still holds a Class B driver's license and with this opportunity, he credits a great deal of responsibility and interpersonal interaction.

Jim is an avid photographer which he has done both as a hobby and professionally. He still enjoys photography and these days, video work on his listings.

Growing up in Toronto, Jim studied mechanical and architectural drafting at Central Technical School.

The vast background that Jim possesses would amalgamate into a “well rounded” career in real estate where his drafting, photography, mechanical and architectural experience; combined with customer service, organization and sales would all be put to great use!

Jim has owned a vast collection of real estate from houses, condos and lofts through various parts of the city of Toronto and Mississauga where he worked along with a custom home builder to build a 3200 sq ft. modern home with an extensive landscape plan that he had a huge part in creating. He resides there today with his wife, in the Lakeview community. His knowledge also helps his clients when considering a new build experience.

31 Jul 2020What I've Learned: YouTube00:18:31

Are you on YouTube? I've had my YouTube channel for a very long time, but it really wasn't until about three years ago that I actually started to take it seriously. The way I used to treat YouTube is it used to just be the place where I would put a bunch of videos and then I would never do anything with them. It was like the dusty library and there wasn't a whole lot happening. But three years ago my team and I decided to get more serious about YouTube and we launched our #GetSocialSmart Show.

So fast forward to today and we have a thriving weekly show. We have a video on YouTube that comes out every Wednesday where I share social media tips, tools and strategies. Having our show has changed our business in a big, big way. It has helped to grow our community. I can't tell you how many people hire me or want me to teach or reach out to me or decide to join our Academy because they found me first on YouTube.

So in this podcast, I’m sharing behind-the-scenes of our YouTube channel, how it has impacted our business in so many ways and tips for you if you are just getting started.

on the platform.

Lessons learned:

• You have to get your family onboard

• Batching is key

• Consistency is also key - it's ok to repeat content

• Focus on top of the funnel content

• Creating consistent videos creates a snowball effect

• Be in it for the long game!

30 Aug 2019How to Build an Online Community00:08:38

Community is everything – it’s how I launched my book, this podcast, our vlog, our #GetSocialSmart Academy – it’s truly been a cornerstone of our business.

I am often asked how we have built our community over the years. Here’s the truth - people want to feel like they are a part of something bigger than themselves. Building a community is an amazing way to grow your business and your social media presence.

How can you build a community? Be a giver. Notice people around you. Be a good finder. Surprise and delight people. Give without expectation.

Also, think about what you are good at. What is your skill set and what do people ask you about? There are communities for everything! A great community can be an amazing support network and it can also help your business in so many ways.

Lessons learned

  • Find your niche
  • Give without expectation
  • Take the online offline

10 Sep 2021Thriving in Flexibility | Interview with Nicole Nicolay00:38:24

Is it possible to achieve balance between work and family? Where does health and wellness come into play? Can you be the hero for your clients and your family at the same time? In our recent podcast, I had a great conversation with my dear friend and incredibly awesome Realtor, Nicole Nicolay.

I’ve known Nicole for years and first met Nicole on social media and then on the speaker circuit when we both spoke at many events for Inman, NAR and others. Since then she has joined ‘the family business’ (real estate) and in our interview, she shares candidly her thoughts around the ‘ebb and flow’ of her life, how she thrives in flexibility, how she prioritizes being a triathlete and why health is so important to her, how she communicates with her family and clients and more.

I have also long-admired Nicole for the incredible marketer that she is. We chatted about how marketing has changed and what marketing is working for her right now. If you aren’t following her or checking out her awesome videos - you are missing out!

I know you will love this interview! Thank you Nicole!

About Nicole:

Nicole Nicolay is a full-time REALTOR® passionate about helping her clients love where they live, even more.

Growing up in the business, Nicole found her calling in real estate marketing. She traveled for nearly a decade training and speaking to over 200,000 agents nationwide. She created and delivered educational programs for nearly every major real estate brand, as well as for the National Association of REALTORS®. After both of her companies were acquired in 2013, Nicole joined the family business as a local REALTOR®.

Nicole has been recognized as "Rookie of the Year" and "Grand Master" by the BayEast Association of Realtors for outstanding achievement in sales and service to her clients. She co-founded the popular movement "Love Livermore" in order to facilitate a greater sense of community both online and offline. She has also been named one of the 100 Most Influential People in Real Estate.

23 Apr 2021Overcoming Obstacles as a Real Estate Agent | Interview with Robyn Burdett00:35:20

Robyn has been in real estate since 1988 and with RE/MAX since 1995. She has listed, sold, managed over 35+ agents, was the corporate trainer for a large multi-office RE/MAX, ran a successful team for 5 years, and has been a national speaker for Tom Ferry.

She has been on the Board of Directors at her local association and she is currently on the Virginia Association of Realtors Board of Directors. Robyn is constantly learning/growing. Last year, even with breaking her back with two surgeries, COVID and her mother dying, she sold 25 homes on her own, which she did 23 in 2019.

Robyn is an inspiration and I know you will get a lot out of this interview!

Lessons learned from Robyn:

  • You don’t have to “be everywhere” – pick one or two places on social media and spend time there
  • There is value in connecting with other real estate agents too on social media!
  • Manage your time otherwise social media can be a big time suck
  • Real estate is constantly changing and evolving – have a mentor to help guide the way!
  • Getting on camera and connecting with your audience is key. Be prepared not scripted
  • Obstacles come up all the time – if you are struggling or have had a tough year – give back to your community and others
  • Lead the way in everything you do – ethics are so critical to everything you do in real estate!

23 Aug 2019How We Launched Our Vlog00:12:02

A few years ago, we saw a massive shift from blog to video content and so we decided (with the prompting of my team) to start a show! We launched my YouTube channel and recorded the 1st 99 episodes on my iPhone 6S+ without a mic or fancy lighting, and it made a huge impact in our business.

Creating episodic content has been huge for us and this podcast tells that story – lessons learned, why content alone is not enough, how we think about distribution of content and why it was one of the best business decisions for us!

Lessons learned

  • Have a plan – Asana (consistency counts!)
  • Distribution is key – repurpose, repost, repackage
  • Email is not dead – this has played a big part of how we distribute our vlogs each week!

02 Apr 2021Opening Pathways for Conversations About Race, Best in Class Real Estate Marketing, Parenting (and More!)00:51:55

Anne Jones is the Owner/Designated broker at Windermere Abode, which she and Dave opened in 2017. She has been licensed as a Realtor since 2008 and sold many homes in the greater Tacoma area during that time. Opening Windermere Abode has allowed Anne to focus on the aspects of real estate she is most passionate about; providing best-in-class marketing at all price points, giving back to the communities they serve, and creating a welcoming space where brokers and clients feel comfortable being their authentic selves.

As a former educator and high school principal, Dave takes a service-minded and socially responsible approach to running and operating Windermere Abode with his wife, Anne Jones. Dave and Anne were recently named 2020 Inman News Person of the Year for their role in not only operating Windermere Abode during a pandemic, but also taking a lead on social justice both in the community and in real estate circles. A trailblazer, Dave is the first black owner in Windermere Real Estate’s history. He is also a filmmaker, podcaster, community mentor, hip hop scene junkie, loves all things tech, and a lifelong basketball junkie. He takes pride in bringing a new energy and approach to ownership in the real estate space.

Lessons learned from Anne and Dave:

  • Reducing the barriers to implementation for our agents is key.
  • Exposure to black and brown faces - the more Dave shows up, the more “normal” it is.
  • Goal is to shine the light on their agents. “What else can we do to provide value for our folks?”
  • 230K was the medium home price when they opened their doors - all of their agents still do first in class listing videos, professional photos, best in class marketing - regardless of price point.
  • “Our Realtors can show up exactly how they are - when they are at the farmer’s market, or taking their kids to school - they are Realtors. We want to embrace them exactly as they are.”
  • Finding your voice is a process.
  • If we don’t acknowledge that separating business and personal is rooted in white supremacy. We don’t talk about those things because it makes us uncomfortable. There is zero excuse to not be listening to black men and women - there are lots of opportunities.
  • You see what you most interact with - you have to be proactive.
  • Humanity over politics.
  • Listen - ask and listen.
  • Every day is a new day.
  • Invest in things that are uncomfortable.
  • Fail forward.
  • Start where you are at.
  • Be where your feet are.
  • Pick one thing and do that!
