The Joyful Friar Trailer
00:01:02
The Joyful Friar Podcast explores the soulful, the meaningful, and the mystical in three different ways. First, Afterlife, Interrupted stories, in which someone who died suddenly and traumatically seeks my help and the help of my prayer partners. Second, Compassionate Responses, to readers’ and listeners’ questions and concerns that arise from those stories. And third, Spiritual Practices, influenced by the Catholic Christian tradition I’ve been shaped by that reveal how goodness is at work throughout the universe and within each of us. Each episode reveals insights about living in the present with faith and joyful hope. Be inspired to more fully receive, magnify, and share love.

Check your assumptions (with the help of another).
The scientific method proceeds from a pre-existing understanding…through new information, proof yields new evidence e.g. Galileo, Copernicus.
Presume: to sum up before … Where have you presumed to know the truth about someone or something while closing yourself off to the flow of new information?
See the fool in you: “You’re a caveman, Ray.
Mirror exercise with the Holy Spirit.
Give your higher self the chance to get a word in edgewise.

If you would like to help the Catholic Nuns in the Benebikira Congregation, a native Rwandan order. In Kinyarwandan, Benebikira means "Daughters of Mary". They serve the poorest of the poor in Rwanda, a country that suffered so much during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.
Their convent is over 100 years old and is in serious disrepair. They are in desperate need of a new home and because they originated in Rwanda, they have no mother order in Europe they can turn to for assistance. Immaculee Ilibagiza survived the genocide and is helping these saintly souls through her work in the U.S. and abroad. 100% of all money raised will go to rebuild their convent. Fr. Nathan discusses "The Work" of Byron Katie. A method of inquiry born directly out of Byron Katie’s experience. This practice allows you to access the wisdom that always exists within you.
In 1986, at the bottom of a ten-year spiral into depression and self-loathing, Byron Katie woke up one morning in a state of joy. She realized that when she believed her stressful thoughts, she suffered, but that when she questioned them, she didn’t suffer, and that this is true for every human being. Her simple yet powerful process of self-inquiry, which she calls The Work, consists of four questions and the turnaround, which is a way of experiencing the opposite of what you believe. Byron Katie has been bringing The Work to millions of people for more than thirty years.
Her books include the bestselling Loving What Is now in a revised edition, I Need Your Love—Is That True?, A Thousand Names for Joy, and A Mind at Home with Itself

Fr. Nathan discusses Dr. Bruce Greyson's research work on near-death experiences.
Dr. Bruce Greyson is the Chester Carlson Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia. He was previously on the medical faculty at the University of Michigan and the University of Connecticut, where he was Clinical Chief of Psychiatry. Dr. Greyson has consulted with the National Institutes of Health and addressed symposia on consciousness at the United Nations and at the Dalai Lama’s compound in Dharamsala, India. He has earned awards for his medical research and was elected a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, the highest honor bestowed by that organization.
Dr. Greyson’s interest in near-death experiences began just a few months after graduating from medical school, when he treated an unconscious patient in the emergency room who stunned him the next morning with an account of leaving her body. That event challenged his beliefs about the mind and the brain, and ultimately led him on a journey to study near-death experiences scientifically, leading to more than a hundred publications in medical journals. He co-founded the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS), an organization to support and promote research into these experiences, and for 27 years edited the Journal of Near-Death Studies, the only scholarly journal dedicated to near-death research. Through his research, he has discovered common and universal themes in near-death experiences that go beyond neurophysiological or cultural interpretations, as well as patterns of consistent aftereffects on individuals’ attitudes, beliefs, values, and personalities.

Fr. Nathan discusses with his prayer partner Michael Quinn about finding joy after the unexpected passing of his beloved wife Linda, and how grief ebbs and flows, eventually becoming a peaceful and positive presence.
Michael Quinn has been a hospice volunteer for 20 years. He is co-author with his late wife Linda of The Journey Home - Soul Release Intercession: Assisting the Actively Dying at the Time of Transition and The Journey Home – Inspiring Passages From Near-Death Experiences to Comfort the Dying. Michael believes writing these books are a part of his sacred journey to awaken us to the reality that we are all beautiful, sacred souls, loved beyond measure by God, and that life is full of opportunities to share this profound love with others.
With the recent passing of his beloved Linda, Michael composed From Grief to Peace: A Pilgrim’s Journey That Has Just Begun And Will Never End. He wrote: “Grief isn’t something we go through, like driving through a rainstorm and expecting a beautiful rainbow to greet us as we exit the storm. Rather, grief is something that becomes a part of us forever. The good news is that over time, as we make room for grief's existence, it becomes a more peaceful and positive presence; one where warm memories and a connection with our loved one can grow.”

00:37:58
Fr. Nathan discusses Father Kevin Goodrich, O.P.'s (Anglican Order of Preachers) captivating spiritual journey. Father Goodrich is an advocate for the Anglican Tradition of Christianity. Yet his teaching is ecumenical in spirit. He stresses commonalities across Christian denominations while maintaining a respectful and generous approach to the differences between them.
