00:57:20
I am thrilled to welcome Caroline Williams to The Joy of SUP Podcast today.
I first discovered Caroline whilst reading and listening to her book Move! The New Science of Body over Mind and I was fascinated by the research she shared. It seemed to explain why we love to paddleboard and the science behind why it makes us feel so good. When I saw that she enjoyed SUP I was very excited to ask her onto the podcast!
A little bit about Caroline:
Caroline originally planned to be a PE teacher but got sidetracked by science. The author of Move! she is also a science writer, editor and consultant and writer for New Scientist. She has also written for The Guardian, The Times, The Telegraph and the BBC amongst others. She is passionate about the potential of movement to transform the way we think and feel and aims to bring the research behind it to as wide an audience as possible. She gets her movement kicks through yoga, paddleboarding and cycling. And when she's not doing that, she's usually walking the dog.

In 2020 I became a British Canoeing #She Paddles Ambassador. In 2021 I was invited to join the Californian Watersport Collective Ambassador programme.
The role of #ShePaddles Ambassador has empowered me to speak + write about my own paddling journey to inspire other women. This has included podcasts in the UK with SUPFM, in USA with Paul Clark, and with Etienne Stott, Olympic Slalom Gold Medal Winner.
In February 2021, I was thrilled to write a series of interviews celebrating the explosion of women in the White Water SUP coaching route for SUPMagUK. I am very proud of this year long project and so honoured to chat with Jenna Sanders, Jessica Phillip, Lisa Boore, Charlotte Louise, Louise Royle, Beth Kirby, Julie Vigor and Joyce Johnston. All incredible women, inspiring paddlers + talented coaches.
Summer 2021 I took a tucked away dream of mine + turned it into a reality - my very own SUP coaching business Wotbikini Stand Up Paddleboarding.
I specialise in building women's confidence on the water via stand up paddle boarding. I am very pleased to be a British Canoeing Delivery Partner.
It was an amazing first season, wonderful to support so many inspiring women. We have learnt together, developed, laughed + really enjoyed having time on the water.

Holly Pye - SUP Racing, Downwinding, Being a Sleep Specialist + Cinammon + Raisin Bagels
01:05:43
I am thrilled to welcome Holly Pye to The Joy of SUP Podcast.
I first met Holly when I asked in SUP Sisterhood for a sleep specialist. What I didn't realise that as well as working in the NHS as a sleep physiologist and running her own specialist sleep clinic - Stars Sleep Clinic - Holly is a very successful SUP racer and downwinder!
Holly is a SUP racer living in South Devon. She enjoys the competitive side of the sport and has raced in the GBSUP National Series since 2017. In 2021, Holly travelled to Hungary with her SUP for the ICF World Championships where she came 13th in the long distance race - an 18 kilometre race against some of the world's best!
Holly loves being in or on the ocean and takes any chance she can to get out there. She grew up around the water and now does lots of different watersports. When the weather turns she can often be found downwinding along the Devon or Cornwall coast, riding the bumps on her SUP from one point to another and enjoying every minute of it.
When Holly is not on the water, she loves to help others. She trained as a sleep physiologist and runs Stars Sleep Clinic where she offers cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia and supports people with a variety of different sleeping difficulties.
Holly is now a team rider for Starboard SUP, SUP North Devon and Paddle Logger. All organisations which care for the oceans and environment and allow us all the opportunity to protect what we love.
We talk about:
Growing up by the sea and her water loving family - everyone SUPS!

Vikki Weston - Founding Sydney's award winning She SUPs, Community Joy, Tiny Island Adventures + Popcorn on the Go
00:51:39
I am so thrilled to welcome our first international guest to The Joy of SUP today!
Vikki is a British-born adventurer and founder of She SUPs, her paddleboarding business in Sydney, Australia.
She SUPS is an all women's community focussed on empowering women + girls through SUP adventures.
Vikki moved to Sydney in 2015 + within a few months was hooked on paddling. First, it was kayaking, but then came SUP.
Being on the water helped her process working in a toxic corporate environment, visa struggles, loneliness, being away from family + living with anxiety. Through kayak and SUP she gained strength, learnt new skills and found her identity. It helped her create a stronger connection to Country, build friendships and connect with and learn from Mother Nature.
Conducting research, during the initial brainstorming stages of the She SUPs concept, Vikki was shocked (but at the same time not surprised due to personal experience) by the statistics around barriers to participation in adventure-sports for women, which were preventing so many women across Australia from gaining these benefits.
As she read these studies she could definitely relate. Unfortunately, she had found that sometimes being a female adventurer/paddler could be tough, and yet, it really shouldn’t be.
Therefore fuelled by her own experiences, and determined to provide a better, more supportive outlook for women Vikki decided to:
Take on an adventure challenge to raise publicity and awareness of deeply-rooted discriminatory social norms and stereotypes that often prevent women from pursuing adventurous activities/outdoor sports and get the She SUPs mission out into the world!! This was the She SUPs Sydney Expedition where she paddle boarded 30 waterways of Sydney in 30 days during September 2019.
Build an all women’s SUP community focused on creating a safe environment for women to try something new, learn, grow, connect with others and the planet and ultimately feel empowered through adventure.
Winning a prestigious award New South Wales (NSW) Office of Sport 'Her Sport, Her Way' Local Champion Award in recognition of her achievements in 2021 for increasing female participation in sport.
It would be great if you could also rate and review us on Apple as it will help more people find our paddleboarding SUP sunshine! Please always put safety first and train for your body.

Cal Major - World Records, Night Paddling, Ocean Optimism and Finding Joy in Tiny Moments
00:52:38
I am thrilled to launch the first series of The Joy of SUP with an interview with Cal Major, a friend and true inspiration to me and many in the paddleboarding community.
Cal Major is an ocean advocate, world record stand up paddle boarder and veterinary surgeon. She founded Paddle Against Plastic in 2016 to bring a positive message to the plastic pollution crisis, and to inspire and empower positive change through stand up paddle boarding adventures.
Her 2018 expedition saw her SUP the length of the UK, from Land’s End to John O’Groats. She was awarded the Prime Minister’s Points of Light award on World Oceans Day to celebrate her campaigns and efforts to conserve our oceans.
Cal is passionate about connecting people to nature, to protect mental health, and to drive a desire to protect our natural world. As such, she is currently working on setting up the charity The Vitamin Sea Project. Cal loves to engage people through public speaking, writing and film. She lives in Devon where she surfs, kitesurfs and sea swims whenever possible.
In this episode, we talk about Cal's incredible adventures paddling round Cornwall, the Isle of Skye and the length of the UK and her films Skye's The Limit and Vitamin Sea (which you can access on her website).
We also get the most recent news on her mental health charity work, qualifying as a SUP instructor and hopes for making paddleboarding available to more young people. Cal shares her own mental health journey and the connections she made when cycling the country touring her film Vitamin Sea.
There's her Mum's homemade flapjack, the support of HM Coastguard, puffins galore and how joy in tiny moments in nature help her start her day.
It was an absolute honour and joy to interview Cal. She very generously gave me so much great advice on my own SUP adventure and inspired me to make films about paddleboarding with the words "just write and film what brings you joy."
You can follow Cal on Instagram @cal_major, on Twitter at @calmajor_ and her website CalMajor.com.
Cal is an Ambassador for Palm, Kleen Kanteen, Dryrobe, the Midlands Cooperative, Keen and Starboard. She trained as a SUP Instructor with Water Skills Academy. To see more of James Appleton's beautiful work find him on Instagram @jamesappletonphotography.

Please note: Cal talks about depression and the suicide of her close friend in this episode.
I'm so thrilled to bring SUP surfer Heather Peacock to the podcast. I was so struck by her enthusiasm and zest for life on Instagram, I was keen to invite her to share her story.
Heather is a 44 year old SUP-surfer, mother of 2, wife to Chris, charity worker and lover of all things outdoors from TynemoIuth in North East England where she's lived for the past 20 years.
Her love for the sport developed from a chance meeting San Francisco in 2007, and she tells me that she's been hooked ever since...
Professionally, Heather works in a small but very dedicated team for the North of England Children's Cancer Research charity where she's largely responsible for marketing and event support.
Heather tells us how strength training has helped her performance in the sea and cycling. We also talk about how she fits paddleboarding into her busy life and learning to put her own needs higher up the priority list as a busy Mum. Heather likes cold water - the North Sea is particularly cold - and we talk about the mental health benefits of being in the sea.
Having been around SUP for so long, Heather loves to see the sport and community really growing and how accessible it is. She gives us some great tips on taking your first lesson, the importance of safety especially in the sea and how to get into SUP surfing.
She recently invested in a new SUP surf board from SmikSUP for which she and her daughter custom designed the artwork. You can see it on her Instagram now!
Heather also loves a beach clean and is often seen picking up the litter on her local beaches (Longsands and King Edwards Bay). She passionately believes in the power of the sea, the benefits of the outdoors, and helping others to 'dip their toe in the water' of stand up paddle boarding.
It was an absolute joy to talk to Heather and learn from about SUP surfing. I feel so inspired by her enthusiasm and generosity. Here's to rising by lifting others and moments of joy with blackcurrant sunshine smoothies.
You can find Heather on Instagram at @heatherpea.
Heather mentions her first board in 2008 from Naish.
Surf Yonder is the surf school she speaks so highly of.

India Pearson - SUP Yoga, 2 Minute Beach Clean Fundraising, She Paddles Ambassador and Dancing on Water
00:46:00
I'm so thrilled to share India Pearson's episode with you. I discovered her on Instagram and was struck by the light and kindness that shines through. I think you will love her too!
India is a yoga + SUP Yoga teacher, presenter and founder of Fin and Flow based on the Kent Coast in Hythe. As a former dancer, India found yoga after struggling with anxiety and the unforgiving pressures that can be felt in the performance industries. After what felt like a 'mid 20's crisis' India changed her mindset and started focusing on what fuelled her soul, instead of what felt expected. She left London, moved to the Kent coast, trained as a yoga teacher and developed a passion for watersports including SUP!
The more time India spent by and on the water, the more she noticed a positive impact in her own mental and physical health. Not only this, she also wanted to give back and protect the coastline, running regular beach cleans and fund-raising initiatives for environmental charities.
India currently runs yoga/beach cleans for Planet Patrol and in June 2020 embarked on a solo SUP trip, to paddle board the length of the Royal Military Canal between East Sussex and Kent in 1 day whilst litter picking and raise money for a '2 Minute Beach Clean Board' on Hythe Beach. With the help of a friend and trusty mobile phone India has put together a film of her adventure, to highlight the damage litter and most importantly plastic pollution is having on our waterways.
India has combined her passions together and founded Fin & Flow, a hub for like minded people to connect through wellbeing by the sea, from yoga to paddle boarding wild swimming, walking and beach cleans.
In this episode, India shares lots of wonderful and helpful information about SUP Yoga - from what to wear to what to expect and how it can really benefit us, meditation and mindfulness. She also tells us about her fundraising challenge for 2MinuteBeachClean and the On Planet Patrol app. There is also a brilliant story about the amazing things that can be done upcycling an old pair of waders! India gives us some insight into the British Canoeing She Paddles campaign and her dream location to paddle in the UK and her most memorable SUP moment.
It was an absolute joy to talk to India and learn more about SUP Yoga. Here's to rising by lifting others, dancing on the waves and a nice cup of tea and piece of cake!

Sarah Blues - The Joy of Movement, #PaddleKitHerWay, Loving her Race Club and Being Braver
00:37:33
I'm so thrilled to introduce Sarah Blues to you. I discovered her on Instagram after I had shared details about being part of Sport England's This Girl Can campaign and Sarah commented on my post. I was struck immediately by her commitment to support other women who wanted to enjoy paddleboarding safely and comfortably and her #PaddleKitHerWay campaign. Sarah completely embodies one of the themes of the podcast that 'we rise by lifting others.'
Sarah lives in Weymouth, Dorset by the beach. She grew up there and her family life revolved around the sea and the community. Her father was second coxswain on the RNLI Lifeboat and Sarah gig rowed and swam in the sea.
She moved away from Weymouth for university and lived in Hertfordshire for 10 years. Her job is in marketing and communications. She returned to Weymouth just before the 1st lockdown in the UK and took up SUP in summer.
She immediately fell in love with SUP and everything it gave her in terms of confidence and a place to unwind. She first thought it would be a summer sport but loved it so much that she wanted to continue in the winter months.
However, as it got colder, she found it increasingly difficult to find kit that would keep her warm and safe. Most brands only go up to a UK size 16 in women's ranges and as a UK 18 and around 6ft tall, she felt very excluded from the leading brands. They simply didn't have the range she was looking for.
Sarah realised that if she was finding it difficult to get the right kit, then other women would be facing the same problem, but no one was talking about it. She set up her Instagram account @plussizepaddler to share her own story and encourage other women to share theirs. She realised that kit sizing and design was a barrier facing many women who wanted to continue to paddle in the winter months but felt they couldn't.
Rather than give up, Sarah set herself a mission to campaign for kit that fits and works for women over size 16. She shares inspiring stories and is spreading her message in the media. She was recently featured on British Canoeing's channels.
In this wonderful conversation, Sarah also shares how she has learned to enjoy exercise for herself and as a way to look after her body, noticing how she has improved her skills and her achievements. Her confidence has grown and she feels braver.
Sarah also talks about the impact joining a supportive club - the Dorset Race Club - has had on her life since returning to Weymouth, bringing her friendship and focus. This has inspired her to set herself a huge LEJOG SUP challenge in 2021 since recording our episode together.
You can find out more on her Instagram page @plussizepaddler and her website www.plussizepaddler.com.

Cadi Lambert - British Canoeing, Women in SUP Coaching, Mental Health + Paddling Friendships
00:39:20
I'm thrilled to welcome Cadi Lambert to the podcast. Cadi has been hugely instrumental in my own SUP journey over the last 2 years. I was honoured to work with her during my year as a #ShePaddles Ambassador. I'm grateful I can thank her publicly on the podcast.
This episode was recorded in December 2020 when Cadi was running the #ShePaddles programme at British Canoeing.
This is a programme to encourage more women + girls into paddlesports and develop their leadership + coaching roles.
#ShePaddles has a number of elements: a) The 10 Women's Paddlesports Ambassadors who share a love of paddling across their social media and blogging. b) A Sport England funded programme to develop a 100 women and girls as coaches and leaders across the country in clubs. c) the Women's Paddling Community, a 2500 strong community on Facebook where women can support each other, make new friends and build their confidence.
In this episode, we talk about:
how the #ShePaddles programme helped increase the numbers of women joining British Canoeing since its beginning 5 years ago when the figure was 27% female membership. In 2020 40% of the new members joining British Canoeing were women.
why it is important to join BC for your Waterways License - allowing access to 4500 kms of waterways, providing insurance + supporting campaigns such as Clear Access Clear Waters environmental work.
the Paddles Up Training Opportunities and Go Paddling website + resources available at British Canoeing.
On a personal level, Cadi is happiest when out running the trails with her dog Brew Dog, or wild swimming in a cold lake with friends. Nature has been a huge influence in her life and helped her through the death of a partner to suicide and the loss of her Mum to cancer last year. Her desire to chase positivity and help others find theirs has led her to qualifying as a Life Coach and she plans to use the outdoors, alongside coaching to create positive change in people's lives now she has left British Canoeing.
Cadi first tried SUP many years ago but thought it was only something to be done at the beach. She now loves to head out with friends for a SUP on the local rivers and canals. She hopes to live by the sea one day!
Thank you for listening! I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did recording it and have learned some more about Cadi, the #ShePaddles programme and British Canoeing.

Michelle Ellison - Paddling The Thames + The Channel, Citizen Science + A Wild Business Adventure
00:53:58
I'm thrilled to welcome Michelle Ellison to the podcast today. I first met Michelle in 2018 when we paddleboarded on the Thames with Active 360 and then went to Adventure Uncovered Live.
Michelle Ellison has been an adventurer, author, speaker, film producer and podcast club host since connecting with her love of the outdoors back in 2015.
She has since paddle boarded the length of the River Thames for citizen science, the longest fjord in Norway, the English Channel, and more recently the width of England for mental health.
Describing herself as a non-runner, cyclist and mountaineer, she took on cycling the length of the UK, running the width of the UK for mental health and suicide, and climbing the highest point in every European country.
A kiwi at heart, her mantra of ‘make sh*t happen’ pushes her to create new experiences for herself and others, believing in the power of connection and getting out of your comfort zone.
When she’s not in the outdoors you’ll find Michelle scheming her latest adventure, spending hours talking to her friends and family on the phone (Covid-times), binging on Netflix and tending to her career in HR.
In this episode, Michelle tells us about her exciting new venture bringing the Kula Cloth, which sounds fabulous and could make a great difference to women in the outdoors!
To get more information on Michelle’s projects and how you can buy your own environmentally friendly, technical antimicrobial pee cloth for your next adventure, visit www.shellsellison.com or @shells_ellison on Instagram.

Adya Misra - #ShePaddles Champion, SUP Club Coach, Changing Careers + On Planet Patrol
00:47:24
I'm thrilled to welcome Dr Adya Misra to The Joy of SUP Podcast. I discovered Adya on Twitter and love her passion for coaching other women in SUP + kayaking as well as her commitment to the environment. I also admire how she made a decision to change her research career so that she could incorporate SUP + coaching into her life. There are so many valuable lessons within Adya's story I am honoured to share it.
Adya discovered the joy of being out on the water when she moved to Stockholm, Sweden and discovered kayaking in 2014.
Being inside a research lab 24x7 left little free time to enjoy her new hobby, so a few years later she decided to change careers and get her weekends back.
After kayaking for several years, and craving a challenge while living in a new city, Adya tried paddleboarding in 2019 in Ireland and a few months later bought her own board.
She is a flat water kayak coach and loves leading small groups of paddlers at her local canoe club near Liverpool. In the soundbite clip she also shares her joy of paddling in the Liverpool Albert Docks.
Adya also blogs about her adventures at Gone Paddling, hoping to inspire other women with full time jobs to try paddlesports while incorporating safety advice for everyone.
She is also a British Canoeing #shepaddles Club Champion hoping to improve representation of women at her local canoe club not just as members but in more leadership roles. We cover some really interesting topics around women in paddlesports from both a coaching and participation perspective. I found this really fascinating, in particular around technique and using our bodies in a more effective way.
With her paddling, blogging and #shepaddles work, Adya hopes to improve gender, ethnic and neuro-diversity in the paddlesports community.
Adya talks about paddleboarding in the Albert Docks in Liverpool. You may love the episode with our guest Jayne Rigby from Liverpool SUP Co who teaches SUP there too! Just look for episode no 6 in Apple, Spotify or Stitcher.
Thank you for listening! I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did recording it. I love Adya's commitment to coaching other women and to the environment and how cool is she to change her career to incorporate both!

Camilla Todd - SUP Soul Retreats, Life Coaching, Anchors + Feeling the Fear + Doing It Anyway
00:51:32
I am thrilled to welcome Camilla Todd to The Joy of SUP Podcast. I met Cami on Instagram and loved her energy and passion for wellbeing of people and the planet. I was really keen to find out more about SUP & Soul, her wellness and water retreats.
In this episode Cami talks about making a big decision at a turning point in her life to become a SUP instructor, following a difficult few years. It is really inspiring to hear how she took that leap of faith to back her herself and how the support of life coaching and her partner helped her see the opportunities before her and go for them. She really helped me understand the value of life coaching and why she is now combining it on her wellness and water retreats.
Cami discovered the power of SUP in 2015 on a trip to Canada - a story I think you will love although a little hair raising!
She was immediately in love with the sport. In 2019 she trained as an ASI SUP Instructor in Portugal and officially launched SUP & Soul in 2020. Here is her vision for it:
“My vision is to create SUP experiences and retreats that combine the power of paddleboarding, nature and blue space with mindful practices to help enable people to care for themselves, each other and our planet. I strongly believe in the benefits of self care, compassion and finding calm in this chaotic world. I believe we can find this through reconnecting with nature and in turn we can use this connection to become nature ambassadors who will move mountains to protect what we love. That’s the purpose behind SUP & Soul.”
In this episode we talk about:
The power of life coaching
Following your dreams and backing yourself
Feeling the fear and doing it anyway
The kindness of strangers in encouraging us to believe in ourselves
Building self confidence
Becoming a SUP instructor with ASI and what that entails
SUP in Canada
Blue health and blue mind
How paddleboarding allows you to see a different perspective on life + your thoughts
Water and wellness retreats
Pivoting your paddleboarding business in a pandemic
Rediscovering the joy of play as we get older
Using an anchor to enjoy a quiet moment on the water
Cami talks about using an anchor on her paddleboard. Here is a link to what she uses: (not an affiliate link!) Boatworld SUP Anchor
Thank you for listening! I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did recording it. I love Cami's commitment to water and wellness and how she bravely decided to follow her dreams and bring her unique paddleboarding ideas to the world and help others.

00:48:23
I am thrilled to welcome Rebecca Gillmore to The Joy of SUP Podcast. You might know her as Rebekah Mermaid on Instagram where she shares her watery adventures and commitment to the oceans. I have had so many people ask me to interview Rebecca for the podcast so let me introduce her!
Rebecca is a marine conservationist and all round water woman who spends a lot of time immersed in the sea. She is a stand up paddleboarder, surfer, open water swimmer and PADI scuba diver. She loves the sea deeply + is passionately committed to protecting it.
She works for many charities in different roles. She is:
In 2020 she did a dip a day raising money for British Divers Marine Life Rescue - yes, a dip each day 365 days of the year in all weathers!
Based on the Wirral, Rebecca shares her love for the area and how grateful she is to be so close to the water.
We talk about:
a) being a RNLI Lifeguard and water safety when we are paddling b) surfing in Bali, collecting plastic pollution and her video going viral c) paddleboarding around the Wirral d) her dip a day for BDMLR e) body confidence, appreciating our bodies and encouraging each other to believe in ourselves f) changing the narrative around watersports and the way women and men are differently portrayed in the media g) the reality of SUP in the North - all the layers! h) the benefits of a great dry bag i) plastic free snacks with homemade flapjack
Rebecca's advice for beginners to paddleboarding is to book yourself onto paddleboarding lessons and for those local to the North West recommends Jayne Rigby of Liverpool SUP Co who teaches in the Albert Docks in Liverpool. Jayne has also been on the podcast and you can find her episode here or just look for episode no 6 in Apple, Spotify or Stitcher to hear Jayne's story.
I'll be sharing a photograph of Rebecca on her RNLI jet ski. The photo is credited to David Edwards of Image 61. Thank you David for allowing us to use the great photo.

Natasha Lovegrove - The Kind Store, Summer River Days, Unwinding and Plastic Pollution
00:39:47
I am so thrilled to welcome Natasha Lovegrove onto The Joy of SUP Podcast. Natasha is the founder of The Kind Store and I discovered her on Instagram when I was looking for a great plastic free shampoo + conditioner. She recommended Kind 2 (which I now use) and I realised she was a paddleboarder! She is also a big fan of hugging trees which is something I love doing too!
Natasha discovered paddleboarding by chance in Slovakia in 2015. She has always loved board sports, including high adrenaline wakeboarding and snowboarding.
She thought SUP was just something she could do on holiday, but was reintroduced to the sport through her interest in plastic pollution and the work of Lizzie Carr and On Planet Patrol paddleboarding litter picks. She realised it was a wonderful way to marry her two interests - board sports and caring for the planet.
Based in Essex, Natasha created The Kind Store over 2 years ago as she struggled to find products that met all of her principles and thought there must be more people like her wanting to reduce their single use plastic consumption. She's been vegetarian, now vegan, for nearly seven years and this is what kick-started her journey into sustainability.
She also has a successful career as a Chartered Building Surveyor and runs The Kind Store at night. She and her husband married in summer 2020 in Cornwall.
Like many of us, SUP offers Natasha the chance to escape the demands of a busy working life and gives her a space, place and time to unwind and relax.
I am keen to show all the possibilities of SUP on the podcast and share the important role it can have on our physical and mental wellbeing. I think many of us will relate to Natasha's story.
Topics we also cover:
The Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation requires an extra license in addition to the Waterways License available from British Canoeing. Always check the waterways to know where you are allowed.
Stopping to reflect and celebrate how far we have come either in business or our paddleboarding journey.
Natasha didn't grow up as a 'water baby' but found water sports a little later in life. We all find our way to SUP on different paths.

Fiona Quinn - SUP + LEJOG Triathlon, Crossing the Irish Sea, Ignore the Fear Book + Dolphins
00:36:25
I am thrilled to welcome Fiona Quinn to The Joy of SUP Podcast. Having read her book Ignore The Fear and met her at the Wildbase film evening, I was so excited to finally speak to her about her world record triathlon and the lessons she could share.
Fiona is a keynote speaker, endurance adventurer and entrepreneur.
She became the first woman to complete a length of Britain triathlon in 2018 when she stand up paddleboarded from Lands End to John O'Groats, having already walked and cycled the route.
Taking on her fear of the sea, as well as the demanding logistics of sourcing a boat, crew and funding, she showed what you can achieve when you dare to start before you’re ready and rethink what’s possible.
She faced her fear and lost sight of shore to become the first woman to SUP across the Irish Sea. At the same time she became the first person to SUP the length of Britain on an inflatable board, picking up a hat-trick of world records during this expedition.
When not adventuring Fiona runs Adventure Book Club, sharing stories of adventure and helping others to get outside, as well as running the Action Collective, a 3 month coaching programme for entrepreneurs.
Fiona was sponsored by and used a Red Paddle Co inflatable paddleboard.
I hope you enjoyed listening to this episode as much as I did recording it. Having read Fiona's book and followed her online, you'll hear I did get a little star struck!

Sarah Thornely - UK SUP Racing Champion, Broadcaster, SUPJunkie + Cheerleader Extraordinaire
00:45:54
I am so thrilled to share Sarah Thornely with you on The Joy of SUP Podcast. She is one of the most inspiring, knowledgeable and kind women in the paddleboarding community and I am sure you will love her story.
Having had no previous sporting history, she learned to SUP in 2012 when she was 53. After a serious life-threatening operation she realised it was time to get on with paddling!
She raced for five years, culminating in jointly winning the National Series UK Title in the 14' class in 2017.
She promptly retired and offered to volunteer to help the GBSUP National Series on their events team with practical info for each race location and photography. She became part of the Live Feed of the first race which grew to also interviewing paddlers and all those involved in the race scene.
Supjunkie was "born" and she and her husband are now the media arm for GBSUP.
They have also been involved in some big SUP races: UKN1SCO races, the APP World Tour and went to China with the GB SUP Team who were competing in the World SUP Championships in 2018.
They do this for the love of SUP and it has kept Sarah connected with all the paddlers she used to race with.

Emily Hague - The Killer Whale Trail, SUP in Shetland, RNLI Crew and Being Grateful for the Sea
Emily is a marine biologist, specialising in marine mammals - whales, dolphins and seals. As well as her research, she has a deep care and passion for the sea and all that encompasses it. She is a volunteer lifeboat crew onboard the Anstruther RNLI Lifeboat. She also loves to spend her spare time walking or cycling coastal paths and beach cleaning. She loves getting in the sea itself, whether that’s swimming, kayaking or more recently, paddleboarding!
She is based in the beautiful East Neuk of Fife in Scotland, so mostly paddles around the skerries and rocks within the Firth of Forth. She also shares her wonderful paddles on the Shetland Isles.
Emily runs On the Killer Whale Trail, a social media platform dedicated to adventuring whilst looking for wildlife, with special highlights spotting killer whales in Shetland. She also runs the On the Litter Trail beach cleaning campaign, sponsored by Sea Changers. Through community action and team spirit the campaign collected over a tonne of litter in two weeks (including whilst paddleboarding!).
Emily loves the freedom and sense of adventure that SUP brings. Whilst it can be fun to enjoy with friends, she finds a solo paddle magical, where you can really take time to enjoy the peace and calm that the ocean can bring.
The sea, and all the wonderful creatures that inhabit it, are very close to Emily’s heart which is why she dedicates all her time to researching it, doing beach cleans, educating and encouraging others to enjoy it too.

Gill Ryan - Overcoming Fears, SUP with Children, Fab Photography + SUP Friendships
00:54:11
I am so thrilled to welcome Gill Ryan to the podcast!
Gill lives in a town in Hampshire on the South Coast surrounded by water but this doesn’t mean she grew up as a water baby, in fact the opposite. She tried SUP in the summer of 2019 and instantly fell in love and SUP soon became a big part of her life. There was just one challenge and that was getting over her fear of the water!
Being married and a mum of 2, Gill loves nothing more than getting her family out on the water with her, she even got her over 70 year old dad out in a kayak for the first time in decades. Gill tells us all about preparation and patience she uses to take her children on the boards!
Being a naturally shy person around people she didn’t know, SUP has boosted Gill’s confidence dramatically. Never would she have imagined meeting up with a group of people she didn’t know and thoroughly enjoying herself. She has made some fantastic friendships.
Her new-found confidence has now led her to recording reviews on products. She shares that she still gets tongue tied and it takes several attempts along with a lot of editing but these reviews have proven very popular, especially her YAK Kallista Buoyancy Aid review. She also loves helping small businesses, promoting their clothing/accessory ranges and often gets sent items to promote on her ever growing Instagram @sup_loving_gill account.
In summer 2020 Gill organised three local meet ups, where around 20-30 people turned up each night. Going forward her plan is to organise more meet ups, including fancy dress nights and litter picks, organised through the local sup groups on Facebook.
Owning a VW campervan gives her the freedom to travel further afield and stay overnight. Gill is currently organising various trips around the UK including Devon, Lake District, Swanage and East Sussex.
Gill featured in the 2021 Spring edition of the SUP International Magazine, where she talks about the joy of being able to get back out on the water after restrictions lifted, what motivates her and her kit .
Along with SUP, Gill’s other passion is photography, no fancy cameras just her mobile. For her combining the two has been a dream. She loves nothing more than catching a beautiful sunrise or sunset from her board, spotting glorious water reflections and snapping those stunning autumnal shots on the Basingstoke Canal.
I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I do! I'd love to hear your thoughts and do follow Gill.

Sarah Perkins - Coral Reef Research, SUP Surf, Citizen Science and the Joy of Cake
00:35:42
I'm so thrilled to introduce Dr. Sarah Perkins to you on The Joy of SUP Podcast!
Sarah is a wildlife biologist at Cardiff University whose work focuses on wildlife diseases. She works mostly outdoors, in the field, collecting data on everything from small wild mice to (extremely large) polar bears, but no matter the size of the study animal, she’s always got her eyes on the community that lives on, or in, her study species; the parasites.
When not studying disease transfer in wildlife, Sarah is a keen SUP surfer and racer living on the Pembrokeshire coast.
In recent years Sarah has combined her love of SUP with that of science, finding that her SUP works well as a floating laboratory for her marine research. Over the last 10 years Sarah has been carrying out research on the health of a small, remote coral reef community in Tobago.
The SUP has become an important part of the research equipment used, with it not only being the form of transport to the study sites, but a platform from which to observe the reef and collect samples.
Back in the UK, Sarah is an advocate for wildlife conservation, education and responsible engagement. She can frequently be spotted paddling her SUP while wearing a mask and snorkel; ready to jump off and explore the underwater world.

Becky is a paddle boarder based in the South West of the UK. She took up paddling in 2013 after her friend Guy set up Jurassic Paddle Sports in Sidmouth, Devon.
Although Becky was born in Yorkshire and spent her early years living in Hebden Bridge, her family moved to Devon when she was 6 years old and has been a water baby ever since. She started sailing at the age of 7 and spent many weekends playing in the surf on the North Devon coast.
As surfing became more competitive on the water, she looked for a sport that was more accessible and paddle boarding was perfect!
Last year Becky set up a WhatsApp group for paddle boarders based in the South West of the UK. It’s allowed women to meet up, make friends, share advice and knowledge of SUP and explore new paddle locations with great company!
Becky is also taking on a paddle boarding challenge with her friend John, to raise money for cancer research which has impacted her life as with many others over recent years. They will be paddling across to the Scilly Isles from Cornwall, planning is still in its early days but will share the details of when they come available.
We will share the links to Becky's fundraising page on social media.
She is 42 and lives in Croyde, North Devon with her 2 girls, husband Graham and her dog Pixie.
In 2019 I fundraised for The 2 Minute Foundation with my C2C SUP adventure from Liverpool to Goole, creating 4 beach clean stations. I am a very proud Ambassador.
After graduating with a BA degree in 2000, Nicky travelled to Mexico + New Zealand. She worked in Australia with one job overlooking Sydney Harbour bridge and the blue mountains and loved every minute!
On her return, she worked in financial PR, then project management but jumped at the opportunity to join Graham in India for 6 months where she travelled and volunteered for a Women’s empowerment charity.
After working in London, the pull back to North Devon and the Atlantic coast was magnetic.
At the end of her maternity leave for her firstborn, she started working with Martin Dorey, founder of The 2 Minute Foundation for his writing business 1 day a week.
As traction on the 2 minute beach clean hashtag grew, she listened intently into the conversations between Martin and Dolly, the social media manager and wanted ‘in’! Starting out with the bookkeeping, online shop and station sales, she soon picked up more hours to work with corporate relations, new campaigns, recruiting the wider 2 minute team and being instrumental to transition into charity status.
She now helps to drive The 2 Minute Foundation forwards with the growing and awe inspiring team and adores working for a charity that aligns with her values. She is 2 Minute through and through, always on the look out for new 2 Minute opportunities and litter (!), continually learning and seeking out new adventures.
In addition to the love of SUP, her hobbies include running, Pilates, singing and dipping in the sea!
In this episode we also hear how Nicky's Grandfather was enjoying paddleboarding in the 1940s!

Hayley Browning - Creating the Paddle Cabin, Experiencing Breast Cancer, The SUP Life and Tasty Tomato Soup
00:45:32
I'm thrilled to welcome Hayley Browning to The Joy of SUP Podcast today!
Known for her infectious energy and love of the outdoors, Hayley is co-founder of the award-winning Paddle Cabin and British Canoeing SUP Coach, and it’s safe to say paddleboarding has completely transformed her life since her diagnosis of breast cancer in 2017 at the age of 27.
Paddleboarding has allowed her to reconnect to nature, the feeling that had been missing for her since 2010 where she lived in a wooden cabin with no electricity on a Wolf Lake in Minnesota. While having an 11 year career in the charity-corporate partnership world taught her a lot, it’s not the environment that would help her overcome the long-term physical and mental effects of having breast cancer at such a young age, unlike the positive wellbeing effects of the outdoors.
After lockdown’s reflection time, quitting her 9-5 office job without a real plan and risking her life savings to follow her dream of working on the water paid off, with the opportunity of a lifetime soon coming her way. Fast forward six months, alongside her friend Jo Taylor, Hayley opened the Paddle Cabin’s door and brought the paddle life to Kent, winning awards for their paddleboarding business which has water safety and wellbeing on the water at it’s heart.
Combine that love of nature, with her passion for introducing people to adventure, and getting into the nitty gritty of technical SUP coaching, that’s what you can expect from time with Hayley. Hopefully this episode will give you a flavour of paddle life at the cabin and inspire you to take that leap into your unknown, and trust the net will appear, like it did for Hayley.
We talk about:

Lesley Robinson - Heron and Hush community, RED January, Trent 100 and Babybels
00:50:58
I am thrilled to welcome Lesley Robinson of Heron and Hush to The Joy of SUP Podcast.
I discovered Lesley on Instagram when I saw her fundraising for RED January, a campaign founded by Hannah Beecham encouraging us to move every day to Beat The Blues in January and fundraise for mental health charities.
Lesley tells us more:
My love of the outdoors grew with me from a young age when we would go for hikes for my little legs, through woodland, farmland, fields, or by the lakes and rivers. If we weren’t walking, we were cycling miles along dirt tracks in the Hertfordshire villages or playing outside. I can't tell you how much I dislike being inside! ‘Outside is the best side’ and where I feel that sparkle, that warm feeling.
18 years ago, I moved to Bedford, a short walk away from the river and the country park and knew instantly that being closer to nature felt better, years went by where I enjoyed these blue and green spaces by myself and with friends and family.
Returning from holiday several years ago, I had a SUP taster session on my local river, the River Great Ouse and I was hooked! After spending as much time as I could on the water and attending different SUP courses and clinics, I decided to go for my SUP Instructor Qualification with ASI and now… Heron and Hush is heading into it’s third year!
There’s nothing I love more than seeing those smiles at the end of a session and the incredible effect being on the water has on everyone, from the soothing and calming moments where we connect with nature to the fun and frolics we have.
Heron and Hush has grown so much, through some tough times! I think we provide something for everyone, new experiences, edging out of your comfort zone with that support and knowledge on hand.. I want to make SUP accessible for everyone in a way that they enjoy and have the most fun!
Please do also rate and review us on Apple as it will help more people find us!
