My great-grandmother (Nana) was Spanish. English was her second language. With only an eighth-grade education, she learned about life through raising her family and showing love through her kitchen and her cooking. Her specialty was a pot of pink beans with chunks of bacon dripped into her homemade tortillas with a slab of churned butter. She served them with grilled tri-tip on her little kitchen table. To this day, Nana's beans are a weekly staple in the Higgins house. Franny Higgins (my mom) describes how memorable and impactful the time she spent in the kitchen with Nana was to her own life. It’s an opportunity to leave behind past mistakes, challenges, or regrets and embrace new beginnings with optimism. This "reset" aligns with our natural inclination to mark time and milestones as moments for reflection and renewal. Many cultures have rituals or practices associated with the New Year that emphasize renewal, gratitude, and hope for the future. In Japan, for example, hatsumōde at shrines symbolize a spiritual reset. In the West, traditions like making resolutions are rooted in self-improvement and goal-setting. We are naturally drawn to rhythms and cycles, such as the passage of days, months, and years. The New Year provides a mental checkpoint for evaluating personal growth and planning for the future. Setting resolutions or intentions motivates because it offers a structured framework for achieving aspirations. Japan says goodbye to the old year on New Year’s Eve, called Ōmisoka. Ōmisoka is all about reflection and preparation—emphasizing cleansing and renewal. The New Year’s Eve starts with Ōsōji, the deep cleaning of homes before the New Year. It’s a physical and spiritual reset. Preparing your space by removing the old makes room for good fortune in the year ahead. Families take this tradition seriously, often involving every member of the household. After that, Families gather to enjoy toshikoshi soba, or “year-crossing noodles.” The noodles symbolize a wish for a long, humble, healthy life. COVID restrictions had lifted slightly, and Stacey couldn't wait to perform in front of audiences again. She was beginning a tour to support her new album, SONGS FROM OTHER PLACES, a voice and piano duets collection. Traveling with Stacey on this musical journey was her dear friend, pianist Art Hirahara. Stacey was in a hotel room in New York City, and we talked on and off the mic/camera for nearly two hours. It was one of the best conversations I've had with such an established, well-known musician. Easy, relaxed, and an honest conversation. I became an even bigger fan of Stacey's. Stacey Kent has a legion of fans worldwide, a host of honors and awards, including a GRAMMY® nomination, album sales in excess of 2 million, and Platinum, Double-Gold, and Gold-selling albums that have reached a series of No. 1 chart positions during her career. Throughout 2020-2021, with her concert appearances on pause, Stacey remained busy recording from home and staying in touch with her fans through social media. She released several recordings, including Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds, Bill Wither’s Lovely Day, and the EP, Christmas In The Rockies (Token 2020). Pete first began playing piano as a teenager. At Princeton University, he distinguished himself as a math wiz with a preternatural gift for numbers. THE KIMI KATO SHOW with Jeremiah - Featuring Sincere from RYUSENKEI RYUSENKEI is a Japanese city music band consisting of Cunimondo Takiguchi and Sincere. Sincere joins us today on the show. The story of RYUSENKEI starts back in 2001 when Cunimondo Takiguchi [クニモンド瀧口]formed the band 流線形 “Ryusenkei.” The band's name was originally written in Japanese. It began as an exciting project, and by 2003, Cunimondo, alongside Takehiro Oshizuka [押塚岳大] and Yuzo Hayashi [林有三], released the mini album “CITY MUSIC,” featuring Tomomi Sano on vocals. Fast forward to 2006, Ryusenkei transformed into a solo project for Cunimondo, who dropped the album “TOKYO SNIPER” with Nica Eguchi [江口ニカ], also known as Hitomitoi [一十三十一]. It was highly rated amongst City Pop music fans and set the stage for their evolving sound. By 2009, Ryusenkei was back with Atsuko Hiyajo [比屋定篤子], releasing “NATURAL WOMAN.” And just when you thought they couldn’t get any more groundbreaking, 2019 saw them collaborating with Hitomitoi [一十三十一] again for “Talio,” the soundtrack for the NHK drama series “Talio Fukushu Daiko no Futari,” marking a new chapter in their musical journey. [NHK ドラマ「タリオ 復讐代行の2人」] In 2022, they released “Incomplete,” featuring Yasuyuki Horigome [堀込泰行], a former member of KIRINJI [exキリンジ], adding yet another layer to their rich sound. He has appeared in several productions in NYC, including at the NY Public Theater. He's performed at the EPCOT Center in Disney World and as a Puck in "Midsummer Night's Dream" at the Florida Shakespeare Festival. Michael starred in the film, "Legal Aliens" with Julie Dreyfus. Michael lived in Japan for 20 years, where he performed in major theaters with some of Japan's biggest stars, including famous Kabuki actor Ichikawa Ebizou in "Nobunaga" He was also frequently seen on television starring in popular children's programs like "Eigorian" and was active in computer game narrations, like "Shenmue" "Ace Combat" and "Resident Evil." He is the director of the Japanese version of the show. He also wrote and starred in the bi-cultural marriage comedy, "John and Yoko," directed by Yoko Narahashi. He performed the hit Broadway solo show "Defending the Caveman" in Tokyo in English. Michael directed the translation of the live shows at Universal Studios Japan and was often seen as an MC and Ring Announcer for Pride Bushido, K-1, and All Japan Wrestling. He is a founding member of the Tokyo Comedy Store, instrumental in bringing improv and Western-style stand-up comedy to Japan. He performed Japanese-style stand-up and sketch comedy as one half of "The Sushi Brothers" with Yoshimoto Kogyo comedian Zenjiro. Michael studied Taiko drumming with Miyauchi Yukihiro and founded Akaoni Daiko, performing at the KODO Earth Celebration fringe stage for ten years. Michael also has a third-degree black belt from the Nihon Karate-do Shotokai. Returning to Los Angeles, Michael continues his career as a bilingual MC performing in theatre, TV, and film and performing and teaching Taiko drumming. Atlanta- Journal-Constitution, the Baton Rouge Advocate, and the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
