11 Dec 2023 | 12. Shane MacGowan's Funeral: Tributes To A Beloved Genius | 01:55:28
As a fan of Shane MacGowan and The Pogues since 1985 this episode is made with the most respectful of intentions. It is a collection of thoughts, conversations and music from Shane's funeral in Nenagh, County Tipperary on 8 December 2023 - a day that would have been Sinéad O’Connor’s 57th birthday. In the interests of time two notable omissions have been made: the speech from an Uachtaráin Michael D. Higgins and the eulogy from Shane’s widow Victoria Mary Clarke. (Both are really worth looking up.) Victoria does offer a great insight into Shane via a context of the presentation of the symbols. Please forgive and endure the first two interviews as the wind was a bit strong: the audio quality gets better from then on. Victoria concluded her eulogy with this, ”He demonstrated that it's possible to be a multiple drug user – like not just an alcoholic but absolutely multiple, every kind of drug known to man, there wasn't a single drug he didn't take – to still be a genius and a beautiful soul and make massive contributions to the world and be loved. So, next time you see somebody who you're thinking ‘that guy is just an alcoholic or drug addict’, stop. Give thought to it and just let yourself just consider giving a a bit of compassion and respect to that person, that would be my final message.” Sincerest gratitude to all that contributed to this project. 25 Dec 2023 | 14. Christmas Special: Phil Coulter - Living Legend | 01:10:14
Episode 14. The word "legend" has been bandied about so much it has almost lost its meaning. However it is with great consideration and without any doubt that we can announce the guest of this Christmas Special of The Ireland Podcast as Derry, Ireland and indeed Europe's own living legend, Mr. Phil Coulter. Not only has Phil been the first Eurovision composer to have penned two winning songs for two different countries but he also has composed some of the most memorable songs that Ireland has heard in the last century including The Town I Loved So Well, Scorn Not His Simplicity, Steal Away and Ireland's Call to name but a few. Elvis Presley has even recorded one of this man's songs! As producer he has brought us some of the best recordings from the likes of Planxty, The Dubliners, The Fureys, Sinead O'Connor and Van Morrison. He's sold literally millions of records worldwide and has amassed awards resulting in a list that anyone can care to remember. We deep dive into some Phil's background, his production techniques, his methods for composing as well well as some tales from some of the other amazing artists he has worked with. 01 Jan 2024 | 15. Nicole Schwabacher: Inyo's Ring | 01:34:22
Episode 15. The first episode of 2024 brings you Nicole Schwabacher, a teacher turned author at the start of her literary career where she discusses her first novel: Inyo's Ring. As it is described on her website: "A young sailor’s quest for survival turns into an epic battle for love, freedom, and justice in this gripping reimagined legend of the Tudor Era.The coast of Ireland, 1588: Aboard a lone galleon, part of what once was the mighty Armada, Inyo Fernández has barely survived weeks of starvation and harrowing sea battles, when his ship is far off course, heading straight into a catastrophic storm. In Ireland, the O’Malley chieftain’s granddaughter, Finley, has only recently discovered how badly her world is broken. And now, she and the entire clan are about to be plunged into a desperate struggle against foreign domination. So much is already at stake, and hiding someone hunted by the English will endanger everyone’s lives even more. Finley, however, is inexplicably drawn to the stranger and can’t shake the feeling that she knows him. But how? Amid uncertain days, a spark ignites between Finley and Inyo, a growing flame that outshines the darkness around them. Yet both know that inevitable heartbreak looms because Inyo simply has to flee. When Finley’s kin are ambushed and captured, facing the gallows, Inyo and Finley unexpectedly find themselves catapulted into untold dangers across the sea." There's a challenge in this episode to turn this book into a screenplay and then who knows what may become of it? 15 Jan 2024 | 17. Gino Lupari: Irish Musician | 01:24:29
Episode 17. This week’s guest is one of the world’s most famous bodhran players Mr Gino Lupari. Gino plays with a fantastic group called Four Men & A Dog who he affectionately refers to in this interview as The Dogs. Gino has recorded with Sinead O’Connor, Shane McGowan, Rick Danko, Levon Helm (The Band) and Garth Hudson to name but a few. He’s appeared on almost 50 albums, toured in over 30 countries and performed over 1000 concerts. We talk a little bit about Gino’s Italian heritage through his identity but I mostly steer away from that topic as it was covered excellently by Mr Paddy Glasgow on his brilliant podcast which is entitled Small But Massive. (We hope to get Paddy Glasgow on this podcast some day as he has been doing some of most worthwhile work in the whole of Ireland for the last 30 years or so. Anyway, check out that podcast episode. The link is below.) In this episode I ask Gino mostly about his percussion. What does he play? How does he play it? How does he decide which instrument to play? How does he arrange? How does he record? I mention the Shure SM57 mic but I just call it the 57. If any of you are thinking of getting into production this should be the first mic you buy. It’s about 100 Euros and it will make anything sound rock and roll. We also talk about Gino’s new album: No Turning Back. It was recorded in Donegal in Liam Bradley’s studio and also in Paul Casey’s studio who also mixed and mastered it. Musicians featured on the CD include: Liam Bradley. Paul Casey, Seamus O'Rourke, Brian McGrath, Dónal Murphy, Mick Daly, My Girl Josephine, Liam Bradley, Paul Casey, Nicky Scott, John McCullough, Gerry O’Connor, Damien “Nashville” McGeehan, Tim Edey, Dermot Byrne,Cathy Jordan and Lauren Doherty. Gino is touring the album and you can find those dates as well as links for buying the CD on his website. We recorded this conversation in Draperstown (aka Ballinascreen) in County Derry on Thurs 4th January 2024. Special thanks to my brother and his family for the loan of their living room. The soft furnishings really helped the acoustics of this recording. Relevant Links Gino on Small But Massive Podcast Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 18 features freelance animator Patrick Maguire who is the artist behind various hilarious (semi?)viral videos online. Patrick also plays banjo, creates music and is an installation artist, as well as other things. On the internet he is mostly RareWitch but he is also Petal Reaction. Patrick talks us through his inspiration and his work processes. Making the ordinary extraordinary Patrick drills into the mundane and adds humour to it making side-splitting art. We have inserted in some of the audio from Patrick's animated videos. We have also bleeped out the swearing so you can still listen to it in front of anyone who may be offended. Patrick also treats us to live performances of three of his compositions. All in all this is an episode which had us creased up laughing. We trust that you will enjoy too. 30 Jan 2024 | 20. Sister Rita Minehan: Who Was Saint Brigid? | 00:53:00
This is the second episode in a series celebrating Saint Brigid of Kildare - one of our three patron Saints, with the other two being Patrick and Colmcille. This week is all about the 1500th anniversary of Saint Brigid and we thought it would be a good idea to chat with someone who has a good grasp of the facts of what the lady, Brigid of Kildare was all about. In the previous episode Fender was talking with Paula O’Brien who works for Kildare County Councila and she mentioned that “Sister Rita” really knows a lot about Saint Brigid. So it was a no brainer for me to go to the religious centre of Ireland when it comes to our only female patron saint. Sister Rita Minehan is what we call a Brigidine sister. Sister Rita is based in Solas Bhride which translate’s as Light (or flame) of Brigid. (Solas is the Gaelic for light.) To quote from their website: “Solas Bhride is a Christian Spirituality Centre with a focus on St. Brigid and the early Christian Celtic tradition which had a profound sense of the presence of God in everyone and everything. It is a spirituality nourished by ritual, tradition, contemplation, experience and story.” Whilst learning about Saint Brigid Fender was remembering an earlier episode which he recorded with another Brigid - Brid Rodgers. Brid Rodgers is a retired politician and she worked with John Hume’s SDLP. Bríd was quite instrumental in delivering the Good Friday Agreement which helped bring peace to Northern Ireland. In that interview Bríd was talking about the concerns of Unionists (or people in the Protestant community) in Northern Ireland. Bríd said that the Unionists had concerns about the Republic of Ireland being a Roman Catholic state. She then argues that this is less a case now. So whatever your faith, or lack of faith is, you cannot deny that the Catholic Church has had a huge influence over the island of Ireland since about the sixth Century. And, given that this is the 1500th anniversary of Saint Brigid, we thought it would be remiss of us not to delve into the life and times of Brigid of Kildare. Who better to give us an insight into this truly, legendary historical Irish figure of Brigid of Kildare than a Brigidine Sister. We are truly grateful to Sister Rita for her contribution for this episode. Relevant Links https://solasbhride.ie Get bonus content on PatreonHosted on Acast. 02 Feb 2024 | 22. Bríd Rodgers: 1500th Anniversary Of St. Brigid | 00:17:39
Episode 22 brings you a conversation wit Bríd Rodgers which was recorded on 1st February 2024: the 1500th anniversary of Saint Brigid. Brid Rodgers is a retired politician of John Hume’s Social Democratic and Labour Party and was the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Brid was one of those key players back in the day of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's. She helped deliver the Good Friday Agreement. That agreement was quite instrumental in ending the 30 year conflict on our island known as The Troubles. We interviewed Brid at length as a way of marking the 25th anniversary of that peace deal. It’s worth checking out. It’s available in Episodes 6 and 7. With it being such a monumental week for Northern Ireland we thought it would be a good idea to check in on Brid’s thoughts regarding the potential restoration of power after a two year collapse of government. 13 May 2024 | 55. Gerard 'Gerry' Mulholland (Jarír al-Majar): Part 1 - Wake | 01:44:01
Episode 55 is the first part of a two part celebration marking the first anniversary of the passing of the remarkable Jarír al-Majar (Gerry Mulholland). It is a snapshot of memories recorded by some of the friends and family of Gerard Mulholland at the O'Flaherty Funeral Parlour, Galway on Saturday, 13 May from 4.18 p.m. to 7.37p.m. One year ago today exactly. These memories are presented in the chronological order in which they were recorded, interweaved with recordings of Gerry from the internet. Both episodes were published in The Galway Podcast soon after recording and, of all the 46 episodes published so far on The Galway Podcast, these are the two of which I am most proud. I felt at the time that they stand as though they are movies for the ears. I still feel that way. Thank you to everyone who shared their memories and who made recordings of Jarír’s music available on the internet as well as through private messages. Huge thanks to Eamonn, Marion and all the Mulholland family for their blessing for this project to have been given the go ahead, and a huge, special thanks to Breda, Gerard’s twin. I went to visit Breda to get her blessing to publish these episodes on The Ireland Podcast. Breda was very happy to do so. She wrote a beautiful poem for the anniversary notice in the local paper which follows at the end of this message. Perhaps you can tell from the fluidity that it came out in one sitting.
I worked closely with Breda to ensure that Gerard’s memory be treated with the utmost respect that he deserves. It was Breda's grace, dignity and compassion that has made this project a very special one for the memory of Jarír al-Majar.
A final word of appreciation to Jarír al-Majar. The ripples continue after the stone lands at the bottom of the water bed. You were, and continue to be, an inspiration.
ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ. Alhamdulillah. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. May he rest in peace.
Fender Jackson -- Gerard Your smile as you came in the door, alas, it is to be no more. The ivory keys you made them dance, your songs and poems, our lives enhanced. You had so much love to give, embrace, you shared throughout the human race. Sometimes I think, thank God you're gone, to not bear witness to all this wrong. A more gentle soul did not abide, a void so big you left behind. Soar high above and don't look down, the life you lived has earned your crown. Get bonus content on PatreonHosted on Acast.
