09 Jul 2019The Power of a Dream with Justine Martinson00:45:13

At the tender age of 6, Justine Martinson already knew what she wanted to be when she grew up. While others were dressing their Barbies, Justine was booking salon appointments for them and playing spa owner with her family and friends. Her dream held true, and now Justine has been a Medical Aesthetician and Laser Technician for over 10 years and opened her first Spa in Edmonton when she was just 23 years old. Justine joins the Inner Circle to share her experience in Dermatology, and the lessons she has learned through her vast experience in the industry. She talks about opening Lipstick Empire and her new venture in digital marketing. This female powerhouse also talks about her love of connecting with the community, why it’s powerful to ask for help, and the joy she gets from engaging in philanthropy.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode: The seeds of Justine’s future were planted when she was quite young. It was apparent to herself and everyone around her that helping others look and feel their best was quite important. Justine started doing makeup at age 12 and saved up enough money to go to Australia and Aesthetician School. What it was like for Justine to open her first Spa in Edmonton in 2011 when she was just 23 years old. Justine loves showing others that estheticians are so much more than what people stereotype them to be. You have to be very organized, business savvy and have the ability to pay close attention to detail. Justine started getting supreme business results and found medical and beauty experts were looking to her for advice on how she was using her tools. Justine battled with an addiction to work and seeing a psychologist was one of the best and healthiest decisions she could have made for herself. How Justine now is able to do so much but also invest in her own self-care and boundaries. Her love of philanthropic endeavors and giving back to the community. More about Justine starting Lipstick Empire in 2013, and how it has grown over the years. That Justine faced her fear and enrolled in Carrie’s public speaking lessons and the many doors this decision it has opened. It’s important to diversify! Justine is adding to her team, and surrounds herself with those that are experts to grow her own empire. Why passion and drive are so important, but they can’t come at the price of losing yourself.

10 Dec 2018Reframing our Money Mindset with Chris Harder00:47:51

Today, the wonderful Chris Harder challenges us to think about money in a different way. He should know a few things about wealth - Chris has one of the top podcasts out right now, “For the Love of Money”, and was in the banking industry for 11 years. He and his wife Lori are partners in a host of very successful businesses together, and yet Chris still cites being able to give as the main fuel that keeps his rocketship full powered. He and Carrie talk about how to adjust your mindset around money so the sky's the limit, what we can do to get more comfortable with money, and what’s next for the amazing Harder family.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode: How Chris rose through the ranks during his 11 year career in the banking industry. He had it all, but it wasn’t everything he truly wanted. The reasons why so many of us are confused and fearful about money and issues related to money. Why your money mindset is one of the most fundamental things to work on when building a business and living authentically in your identity. How we develop subconscious beliefs that carry over to money, and what we can do to rewire them. Why Chris believes everyone succeeds when women are in charge of the distribution of wealth. How Chris and Lori handle their extremely busy and successful careers both together and independently, and why they push each other to be better still after being married for 13 years. Chris’s tips for couples that work together, including a 3 mile NON NEGOTIABLE walk every day! What inspired Chris to read 30 books in 30 days, and the main lessons he got from all the material. His deep love of philanthropy, and how giving drives him to be bigger and better. What to do to get momentum back when you feel like things are just “good enough”. Three things that are game changers people should do to grow their business:  Find a tribe that pushes you and supports you; Get a mentor and/or a coach; Be loud and proud about your business and why your product is unique.

Quotes: “People would rather talk about the weirdest parts of their sex life than about money.” “Make sure you are as conscious about your relationship as you are about success.” “When good people make good money they do great things.” “Continuing to learn how to become more effective and efficient is the answer, not working harder.” “Good is the enemy of great.” “The secret to everything is giving.” “Your tribe will make or break your business success.” “Be loud, be proud, and be obnoxious about what you have to offer.” “If we are giving in the dark, we can’t inspire others to give as well.”

25 Jun 2019Sharing the Power of Recovery with Joel Gotlib00:55:56

Carrie sits down today with a friend and longtime former colleague Joel Gotlib. Joel demonstrates big time courage, vulnerability, and character by describing his recovery from a 7 year battle with opioids. Joel explains his personal story on how he started taking them, how he got addicted, and the ways in which it took a grip on everything in his life. He then shares how he found treatment and how we can recognize the symptoms and help others who are going through such a profound and unfortunately now growing crisis. Joel has a way of adding humor and wit into everything he does, and this week’s episode is no different. What You’ll Hear in This Episode: Joel was an anchor and reporter with CTV, and was a well known public figure who many thoughts had it all together. No one knew Joel was dealing with addiction and so much pain, even those working with him closely. How it began in 2011 with a sciatica attack while walking his dog, and went home with Percocet. The tolerance Joel built up for his pain meds, and the sense of euphoria and focus it gave him furthered the addiction, yet caused a slow and steady decline. How Joe’s family and personal life began falling apart, and he began to feel more disconnected and discouraged than ever. His emotions from a series of floors falling out from underneath him, including an online stalker and being taken off the CTV anchor desk and assigned to the new role of a reporter. When Joel really hit rock bottom, and how his psychiatrist brother helped him realize his only option at that point was attending rehab. How Joel went from wanting to leave the rehab center after the first stay to sticking it through, getting clean, and even becoming a co-captain to help others. The new passion that has emerged in Joel to share his story to help other addicts and their loved ones in their journey. Why we should focus on compassion and caring with addiction rather than blame and shame.

Quotes: “Don’t resort to Percocet. I’m sorry. It’s addicting and it’s ruining lives.” “When you are an anchor you don’t just sit and read the news. It’s a hard job, but one of the best jobs in the world to have.” “There’s no coming out the opposite side. You have to climb back up.” “I took Percocet all the way to the rehab center.” “You can’t surrender to the program unless you come clean on everything.” “I have long admired people that have gone to rehab to come out and live a better life.” “I have a story to tell and it’s important to share it. And that’s why.”

06 Aug 2019It’s All About Human Connection with Dr. Jody Carrington00:50:11

Dr. Jody Carrington speaks her truth and calls it like she sees it, which benefits the many she has helped in her career as a clinical psychologist, speaker, and author. The most glaring issue she saw affecting the children and families she has worked with both in her private practice and at the Alberta’s Children's Hospital was disconnection, isolation and a feeling of loneliness. In today’s technology focused world, it’s easy to lose sight of the power that actual human connection has on our happiness and health, and Jody is here to bring about a reconnection revolution one interaction at a time. Jody also talks about the energy that comes with finding your purpose, how we can begin to bring more connection into our life, and more about her book, Kids These Days.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode: Jody is lighting the world on fire with her passion for others finding their purpose and connecting with their own self to bring themselves truly and fully to the world. Purpose is why you are on this planet, and what gets you out of bed in the morning. We remember people’s presence and affect on our growth more than the words they say. All the great leaders and figures in the world made their impact by deeply connecting with others. Proximity is what we need in times of distress to remind us that we matter. Jody and her siblings found out they had a biological sister, years into their adulthood. They are very grateful to know her now and to have her join the family. While working at the Alberta’s Children’s Hospital, Jody saw that a lack of connection and close relationships had a profound impact on the trauma of children. Jody is passionate about working those that are close with children every day to help them understand that their presence really makes a difference. This includes everyone from administrators, educators, bus drivers, etc. The only way we learn emotional regulation skills is face to face with another human being. It is a conscious effort to connect, and to do so we must slow down and detach ourselves from looking at a screen 24/7. Jody wrote the outline of Kids These Days on a napkin while on an airplane, and now it serves as an important guide for both educators on families on how to garner connection. Disconnect can happen to anyone, despite age or economic status. It also happens quite often in times of grief, which is where we really need connection the most. Jody and her team take great joy in their “Reconnection Revolution”. They leave kind notes, pay it forward for others and love seeing the reaction of those that it reaches. You are wired to do hard things, and one of those is to truly connect with others. You can only get through hard things when you show up.

Quotes: “Purpose and passion go hand in hand.” “People will forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” - Maya Angelou “The kids are not the problem. It is the people that hold them.” “We are all just here walking each other home.” - Ram Das

Garrett Lombardi and his girlfriend stumbled upon a struggling woman at a cliff's edge and made choices at the moment that ended in the woman contemplating suicide coming away from that ledge unharmed. Garrett says this was God acting through him. Whether you're a person of faith or not, the incredible humanity and reaction to a situation he'd not ever been in before are awe-inspiring. Garrett is now 21, and with a year removed from the situation, steps into the Inner Circle to share his experience of that day, what it brought to his life, how it changed his faith, and how it reinforced his choice to enter the medical field.

Since Garrett is a medical student who is very dedicated to his studies, he doesn't have a product or service we'd usually send you to, but here is an article from 2018 detailing his own journey with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, which really shines a light on his character, optimism, and determination.

08 Oct 2019Redefining Impossible with James Lawrence00:53:51

James Lawrence has redefined impossible and pushed the limits of what we think is capable, both physically and mentally. By doing 50 Ironmans in 50 days in 50 states, he has more than earned the title, “The Iron Cowboy”. He joins the show to talk about his bag of “why’s” when deciding to do the 50-50-50, the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone, and how to think your way into being a force to reckon with. James also shares some of his favorite yet toughest moments from the challenge, and what’s next for him as he opens up and shares his story with others.

What You’ll Hear In This Episode: Why James is nicknamed the Iron Cowboy and accomplished the 50-50-50, a feat that was deemed physically impossible. The importance of mindset and stepping out of your comfort zone. James doesn’t love living in discomfort, but he knows that is where growth lies. How James took the economic crash of 2008 and saw that he wasn’t a match for mediocrity and the status quo. A few of James’s career highlights, such as sharing his story with the Minnesota Vikings and having them deeply connect to his experience. The importance of letting children know they are loved and are valued, but also giving them set expectations and following through with natural consequences.

Almost all sports (except hockey!) were a big part of James’s upbringing, and he found that individual sports helped him discover who he really was, and the grit that he was made of. What exactly the 50-50-50 is, and why it is referred to as the greatest endurance feat that no one knows about. What James remembers from those 50 days and the greatest physical and mental obstacles he had to overcome. What is next for James? Sharing his story to influence people to get out of their heads and into the game of life. Be okay with your journey and who you are, and the opinions of others don’t matter. The fantastic influence that his children and wife had on helping him through the 50-50-50, and why one person’s 5k is just as important as any marathon.

10 Dec 2019The Most Important Thing is To Try with Victoria Smith00:49:13

Guest Victoria Smith knows firsthand the damaging effects that stress can have on our health, along with our general well-being. She has taken her own experience with stress, burnout, and recovery to transition to a life where she coaches others to use stress management and reduction tools. Victoria talks about the moment she knew that she had to take control of her health, gives us a few quick tips that we can start today to destress, and the common stressors she sees when working with her clients.

What You’ll Hear In This Episode: It may look on the outside like everyone besides us has their life totally together and figured out. Not only is that not the case, but it’s far from it. This can help us have realistic expectations instead of feeling like we are always falling behind in some manner. How Victoria’s high paced and stressful way of life lead to burnout, and what exactly the symptoms of stress can look like. Stress is the #1 cause of shingles in younger adults, and what it felt like for Victoria to have to be vulnerable and admit to her coworkers that she had it, and needed to take time off to heal and rest. What burnout can look like and ways that you can recognize the signs for yourself and your loved ones.

The painful and tumultuous time in Victoria’s life when she was caught in the middle of her parents’ divorce, and the toll it took on her own energy and life force. The benefits Victoria found in counseling services, and other major tools that helped her along her wellness recovery journey. Why setting boundaries is so important to our well being, and to preserve our energy so that we can be the best for both ourselves and others. How Victoria’s podcast Girl Tries Life shines a spotlight on other women who are accomplishing big things and also committed to their health and self-growth. It takes time, energy, and dedication for stress reduction, but the results are worth it. A few of Victoria’s strategies to immediately reduce your stress. We have power over our stress life and being a “stressed out” person is not a life sentence.

Quotes: “Everyone on the outside always seems to be hacking it, but you don’t go home with them.” “The most important thing is to always try.” “I may not succeed, but I will have tried.” “You can only control you.”

25 May 2021How Robin Hobal balanced Career and Family00:50:36

Her name is Robin Hobal, and she owns and operates MINA Consignment. Robin started to Make It New Again when she was a mom in" transition". Long ago, Robin was an elementary school teacher who chose to stay at home with her growing family. When she returned to the paid workforce in that same field, after 7 years, Robin was laid off from a contract position and found herself looking to fill her days with something flexible and fun while staying home with 2 over-scheduled kids.

While scrolling through Instagram one night, she became instantly intrigued with the world of reselling. Robin polled her girlfriends to see if she had a base of ladies that were interested in cleaning out their closets to find items that no longer fit, they no longer gravitated to or their tastes or styles had changed. Within a week, she had over 100 clothing pieces to sell and a small base to help her spread the word about what she was doing! Robin's business has grown substantially in the last 4 years but has had its ups and downs. Thankfully she has a supportive husband that not only allowed her to take over their basement to store our inventory but helped her carve out a niche business that she loves.

16 Jul 2019Learn to Love Yourself with Glori Meldrum01:02:38

Glori Meldrum is a force to be reckoned with, whether it’s fighting for herself or for the peace and dignity of others. Glori joins the Inner Circle to fearlessly and openly share her own personal experience of child sexual abuse and explains the depth of damage that it caused even in adulthood today. She talks about how she took that pain and used it to found Little Warriors and the Be Brave Ranch, to help prevent more abuse in the future for other children, and give them a road map of where to turn to when they are faced with a situation similar to hers. Glori then also talks about how her cancer diagnosis led her to find more self-love, clarity, and truth than ever. A successful entrepreneur and dynamic businesswoman, Glori reminds us that you can have it all on the outside but it’s really the inside love that counts.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode: Glori’s own story of sexual abuse from her grandfather when she was just 8 years old. This unbelievable experience robbed her as a young girl of trust and faith in others and self-worth, an issue that she still works on today as an adult. Shocking statistics of perpetrators and abusers — 95% of the time in sexual childhood abuse cases it’s someone the child knows. Sexual predators also abuse 75-125 children on average, which is significantly more than most would expect. Glori found the strength to report her grandfather at age 10, but was not offered treatment or help and instead was accused of lying and making the story up. How Glori found strength and love by meeting her husband, and she owes so much to her healing to his unconditional love and support. The bolt of brilliance in Glori that helped her create Little Warriors and how this organization treats, educates and prevents sexual abuse like no others out there. Glori’s dedication to cutting through the red tape and political obstructions in order to help her kids at the Be Brave Ranch. The lessons that Glori’s cancer diagnosis and treatment taught her: slow down and be more present, tell the truth and be vulnerable and work on loving yourself deeply.

Quotes: “I’m still working on being enough.” “I had no one, but I wanted to live.” “Nothing on the outside is ever enough.” “Sexual abuse is a life sentence to survive.” “There’s no one that can ever take me off course from healing those kids.” “In order to get me to live, I needed to let go of everything.”

Rachel Notley, the 17th Premier of Alberta and current leader of Alberta’s NDP Official Opposition, has her roots firmly planted in politics, though she didn’t always know it was the route she would take. Rachel initially wanted to teach social studies, but something pulled her in the direction of public service; no doubt, it stemmed from the example her father, Grant Notley, set for her as a trailblazer of the NDP. Since then, Rachel has dedicated her life as an advocate for everyday people. Whether she worked as a labour lawyer, an MLA, or the Premier of Alberta, she always had one goal: to serve those who are most in need. Her efforts to cut child poverty in half, to establish economic growth in Alberta, and her dedication to making sure the government makes decisions on behalf of its people are incredibly inspiring and motivating. This week, Rachel shares stories of her paralyzing initial fear of public speaking, watching her father work, her childhood attitude toward politics, and much more. Her journey is one of determination, sticking to your moral compass, and empowering those around you through leading by example.

Where Carol’s tech interest emerged from, and the path that led her to be CEO of an early stage tech company. How she spoke her intentions loudly from a young age, and how we can start to use our words and declarations to manifest our visions. Why Carrie refers to Carol as the “Martha Stewart of the tech world.” That women have come into their power, and women question their own abilities much less than they used to. That it starts with the belief that you are capable and worthy of sharing your story and using your voice. How Carol got deliberate about choosing her travel and managing her time to be present at both work and home. The highly risky decision to turn down Google, and the lesson of doing what makes you happy and believing in yourself. What Axonify is, and they use three core cognitive principles to turn a few minutes a day into a team’s long term success. Examples of how Axonify had a massive impact on a company’s ROI, behavior change and safety. What’s next for Carol both personally and at Axonify. Why Carol feels so strongly about being a mentor, and her advice for entrepreneurs. That taking as much money as you can at first is definitely not the name of the game and other takeaways that are crucial to success.

Quotes: “Even if you run a tech company, you can still struggle with technology.” “Start believing in yourself, and that you don’t need to be anybody other than who you are.” “I’m a huge risk taker in many ways, and I come from a belief and confidence in myself.” “You will have many ideas, so don’t work at something for 4-5 years that is going nowhere.” “You need sheer intestinal fortitude to be an entrepreneur.” “Spend your money wisely.”

Today, we go on a learning journey and become enlightened on how yoga and entrepreneurialism can go hand in hand. Robindra discusses how the two separate ventures of business and yoga became one, and how one small idea led him on a life changing journey. He and Carrie also touch upon the importance of taking our time when designing an immaculate life, how to move from doubt to alignment, what exactly Robindra’s Yoga Entrepreneurial school is, and how to live mindfully in the digital world.

23 Feb 2021A Cancer Diagnosis: Hillberg and Berk CEO Rachel Mielke Shares Her Journey with Cervical Cancer00:51:58

In January of 2020, Rachel Mielke received a cervical cancer diagnosis, which set her on an onerous personal journey toward recovery during a year of global suffering. During this trying year, she was able to find respite in simple things like deep breathing, journaling, and juicing. Family, support networks, and second opinions were also instrumental in guiding her through some incredibly difficult decisions. “Things in life happen for you. After all, this journey brought her closer to her advocacy work, helped her re-evaluate her work-life balance, prioritize her health, and make the big decision to move her family to Victoria. This experience gave her a sense of urgency and clarity about the changes she wanted to make in her life, and she executed those changes in a way that proves that times of great difficulty can also be times of great opportunity.  Rachel is involved in so much work outside of her business, including speaking, advocating for women's health, serving on boards, and much more.

28 Jan 2020An Army of Light with Thordis Elva00:59:33

Thordis Elva is an Icelandic playwright, speaker, and author who embraces the power of her voice and uses it to advocate for women’s rights and gender equality. This week, she joins the Inner Circle to share the incident of sexual abuse that impacted her life and forever changed the course of her life. She talks about contacting her abuser, and why it’s important to demystify who is capable of the act, and how she alleviated her own shame and blame by sharing her truth. Thordis also talks about the powerful TED Talk between herself and Tom, watched by over 5 million people, as well as her book South of Forgiveness, and her superpower of having an “army of light” behind her.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode: There is no such thing as an unworthy story, or someone unworthy of sharing their own. It is what makes us connect with ourselves and each other. Thordis has dedicated her career to gender equality and helping women realize they don’t need to take the blame and shame from gender-based violence. Thordis details how she was exploited at 16 years old, and really what a profound impact it had on her. Sexual abusers are seen to be mythical inhuman monsters, but really it’s far more common to be violated by someone that you know and trust. Thordis reconnected with Tom because she wanted to know “why” and also see how it had marked his life.

He also felt the consequences of his actions and wanted to share his story as well so it could be prevented and avoided. Thordis recognizes her privilege of being able to share her experience. Many women are in different situations and can’t say anything for fear of being hurt or killed. What it was like when they met up in person, and literally faced their truth once and for all. Thordis and Tom took their conversation of 7+ years to the next level with a TED Talk, “Our story of rape and reconciliation” and their book South of Forgiveness. Thordis found her Army of Light that gave her strength and carried her through a time where she had an extremely slim chance of giving birth to her twins. Whether it’s speaking to the UN or a conference of thousands, Thordis puts the emphasis on sharing her truth and threading humanity together by illuminating our faith and belief in miracles.

Quotes: “Every single person on this earth has a story worth telling.” “I needed to unload the blame and the shame.” “The internet has the capacity to bring out the worst in people, but it can certainly bring out the very, very best.” “If you cling to hope, incredible things can happen.”

29 Jun 2021Emilie Iggiotti and The Photos That Speak A Thousand Words00:51:03

Emilie Iggiotti is a portrait photographer from a tiny French island in the Indian Ocean, not far from Madagascar, called Reunion Island. A world traveller, she studied in Versailles, France, lived in Normandy, Paris, Montreal, and now, lives in Edmonton, AB. While she originally studied literature and law, the legal industry lacked the creativity and connection that photography gives her. She found her purpose with photography. She started as a wedding photographer in France and then moved to Canada in 2010. She had to start over in Quebec but after a few years of photographing weddings, she felt uninspired by her work.

When she moved to Edmonton in 2016, she knew she was ready to focus on portraits and decided to rebrand herself as a portrait photographer. Since then, her work as a lifestyle and portrait photographer, focusing on women, allows her to shape the way her clients see themselves – which is an invaluable gift. She now helps women through imagery and wants to empower every woman to step into her own light, whether personally or through entrepreneurship. She photographs women at all stages of their lives. Her latest offering called "The Crone" encourages women over 50 to step in front of her camera and share their stories. We all have these Wise Women in our lives and it’s time for them to be seen and celebrated.

09 Apr 2019Become Your Own CEO with Kelley Keehn00:57:56

Financial educator, author of over 9 books, and public speaker Kelley Keehn joins the Inner Circle today to give us the behind the scenes of all money matters. She got a first-row seat to wealth (and the lack of) while working in both the banking and financial industries and has built her own empire helping others learn to overcome their issues with money and create a long term plan of financial success. Kelley is the go to “money gal” for many national broadcast shows, and she also shares her experience of getting comfortable with public speaking, writing, and living like her own CEO. She will share the biggest mistakes women make in finance now, and ways we can become our own CEO.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode: Kelley’s background of seeing poverty, and how she propelled herself the other way into abundance. Why the “long game” matters when it comes to our bank accounts and personal goals. The things Kelley did wrong financially along the way - she may be an expert, but she isn’t perfect either! How Kelley got into finance and quickly worked her way up through self-study and dedication to learning. The true statement: timing is everything. Don’t judge a book by its cover when it comes to guessing who has money and who doesn’t. The challenges that Kelley encountered along the way of building her empire as a strong, confident and successful businesswoman and media personality. The changes she made to help her climb the ladder in an authentic way. Why Kelley left banking to head over to finance, and what steps she took to elevate herself personally and professionally. You are your own brand, and your own CEO! Ways to enhance your own professional experience even if you don’t have enough money (yet) to hire a 1:1 coach. How Kelley’s husband helped her take the first step to writing what would become writing books. How Kelley mastered the art of public speaking and being on camera. The biggest mistakes Kelley sees women making in finance.

Quotes: “Never stop learning, about everything.” “You want to write a book - wake up 2 hours before everything else.” “Get coaches.” “If you are what you do, what are you when you don’t?” - Wayne Dyer “Figure out what’s important to you, and be still about it.”

12 Oct 2018It’s All About the People with Teresa Spinelli, President of Italian Centre Shop00:41:47

Welcome to the Inner Circle. Today, Carrie is joined with Teresa Spinelli, Owner and President of Italian Centre Shop, and sought-after speaker and visionary. Teresa gives us a peek into her world, and how she runs a multi-million dollar business while carrying on the Italian tradition of “family first”. She talks about the influence her family had on her values, her passion to give others the opportunity to grow, and the future goals of Italian Centre Shop. Finally, she shares a few key lessons she has learned in business, and the importance of empowering one another.

Takeaways: [3:40] Teresa’s upbringing had a huge impact on the course of her life. She watched her parents work 12 hour days, and still have time to dedicate to family and togetherness. Her father’s ability to give back to the community inspired her to live a life where she could do the same. [4:35] Teresa’s parents were born in Italy and immigrated to Canada, where she was later born. [6:41] While she loved being in the store and taking part in the community surrounding it, Teresa didn’t plan on running the business. However, when her brother and dad passed away, it was left up to her to carry the torch. [7:59] Teresa describes the challenges of taking on the business, and the realization that she had a passion for giving people growth opportunities. Opening a second location was also another way for her to hire great people and assemble a team of leaders. [14:06] Teresa started to gain the trust and respect of the employees when she started to focus on her “why”. For her, it was, and always will be, the people. [17:33] If the Prime Minister can make time for health and wellness, so can you. Teresa recounts a dinner where he showed an important and welcomed example of putting our well being first. [20:41] Teresa shares her beautiful experience in the adoption process, and how they went from no baby to her son Massimo over the course of a very short period. [27:02] Teresa and her husband collaborated to the work/life balance with a playpen in her office. Massimo is growing up connected with the employees and the customers, much like Teresa did in her childhood. [30:20] Teresa credits 70 million in sales and 509 employees to the smart and hardworking team around her. [32:10] A few of the key lessons Teresa has learned throughout the years: trust your gut and don’t be afraid to let people go and move on if the opportunity doesn’t serve them any longer. [33:42] Italian Centre helped feed 100,000 families in Edmonton, with their Earth Group and Earth Water Project partnership. [34:35] As a busy mom, Teresa realizes how tough it is to cook and feed your family healthy food, hence the Massimo line of food. The food is family recipes, and you can read all the ingredients. [37:53] Share your story, and listen to the stories of others.

Quotes: “We always had to be together at the dinner table. It didn’t matter whether you had homework or were getting married. Dinner was dinner.” “The more you give, the more you get back.” “I only hire people that are smarter than me.” “Women have to empower each other.”

11 May 2021Setting Intentions and Finding Purpose with Sarah Bowker01:08:29

SHAKTI is the divine feminine power representing liberation. Shakti represents power, ability, capacity, strength, empowerment and all energy we use to manifest and create the life we want in all of its forms. Shakti is the foundation for a conscious life.

Sarah Bowker grew up a lover; heart always wide open. When she designs her jewelry, it all comes down to matters of the heart and liberation. Sarah has been making jewelry since she was young, and has always sought inspiration and wisdom from other cultures. She believes there is a lot that can be learned from the wisdom traditions and indigenous tribes from around the world. Their eye for adornment, their wisdom, their heart. It all shapes, moves, and inspires the work Sarah does through Shakti.

Sarah recalls setting out to India in her 20’s after Nursing School, and finding inspiration in the Tibetan refugee settlements. There was something so deep and so rich about their culture. Something about the way they adorned themselves with meaning and symbolism touched Sarah in a deep way. She was in India to study yoga, in theory, but she believes she was really in India to connect with the rich culture, environment, and heritage to open a deeper part of herself. Sarah chose the name SHAKTI for the brand because of what it represents. LIBERATION.

Shakti is the creative energy that inspires you to seek growth and change and to live a life of purpose and fulfillment. Sarah has a hunger to create, to serve, to make a difference. Her biggest hope is that she can harness this love for stones, the wisdom traditions, and transformation and share a little wisdom with us all.

The signs and symptoms that PTSD has on our physical, emotional and social life, and why it’s important to encourage openness and respect when discussing it. The profound shift that happens in ours and other’s life when we truly listen in our conversations. That you don’t have to live your life feeling irritable, confrontational and disengaged. An inside look at what First Responders see when answering a call. The different types of trauma and what they mean, including: primary, secondoray, moral and vicarious. Why you may rethink asking a First Responder to recount a memory of the worst thing they’ve seen in their career. The proactive approach Paul and his team are taking to train recruits early on Mental Health First Aid. How digesting a big burger led Paul to develop The Great Stair Climb. The night and day difference Paul feels as a father and husband from getting the proper treatment and support.

Quotes: “We signed up to help. We signed up to give back to society.” “We don’t sign up for the aftermath, and it’s something you aren’t prepared for.” “We’ve always got each other back no matter what.” “If you are irritable, that is something you need to get help with.” “If we can all look out for one person, then we are all covered.” “If people in our world can deal with depression, then climbing stairs for 24 hours pales in comparison.”

08 Sep 2020Levelling the Political Playing Field with Kacey Machin & Lana Cuthbertson00:51:06

Social Media has many great uses, but there's a seedy underbelly that exposes itself when politics are at play. It is understood that criticism is expected when one enters politics, but the abuse is at an all-time high, especially for women. Enter Parity YEG, the brainchild of Kacey Machin and Lana Cuthbertson, whose late night WhatsApp conversation in 2017 laid the groundwork for the movement. Its goal is simple: enable and empower more women to get elected and eliminate the inequality that exists.

In this episode, you'll hear how their Twitter Bot combats negativity online, and when you can expect to see it in action again. There are some additional compelling moments you will hear, including why Kacey and Lana decided to make this a "for profit" venture, and the harassment the guests (and Carrie) have encountered in the line of work. Now is a good time to support the cause of eliminating inequality in politics.

You can become a member here, or donate directly to the Parity YEG Patreon page, which creates Twitter Bots that spread positivity throughout the Twitterverse. Venture capitalists can contact Kasey or Lana here.

12 Oct 2021Dr. James Shapiro: Type 1 Diabetes and the Edmonton Protocol00:57:34

James Shapiro obtained his medical degree from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and trained in surgery at the University of Bristol. After coming to Canada in 1993, he received training in liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery at the University of Alberta and earned a Ph.D. in Experimental Surgery.

Shapiro developed a brand new approach to optimize islet cell transplant engraftment that involved a radical departure from previous practice. Of almost 300 islet transplants attempted before 1999, fewer than 10% of these worked in patients. His protocol was designed to address many of the previous shortcomings by transplanting sufficient numbers of islets into the liver by using multiple donors, and by testing a novel anti-rejection strategy that avoided steroids and allowed the transplanted islets to work at their best. The result became known internationally as the ‘Edmonton Protocol.’

Shapiro led the clinical team that tested his approach in seven initial patients, all of whom (100%) were able to discontinue the need for insulin injections for periods beyond a year. He was the lead author in the landmark paper published in July 2000 that described these results. Since then, he and his team have transplanted almost 300 Canadians and have continued to refine and optimize the protocol. This treatment has been replicated many times internationally, and over 2000 patients worldwide have now received islet transplants using the backbone of his protocol.

A large ‘registration’ trial conducted in Canada and the USA reported its positive findings in 2016 in the Journal Diabetes Care. Countries including England, Scotland, France, Switzerland, Australia, and Canada have approved and funded islet transplantation as part of the ‘standard of care for patients with brittle, difficult-to-control, forms of Type 1 diabetes.

Since the development of the Edmonton Protocol, he has led or co-led three major ongoing international multicentre clinical trials to further improve islet transplantation outcomes. He leads the Edmonton team, which is the largest islet transplantation team worldwide. Shapiro also led the first-in-human stem cell transplant trials in Edmonton, Canada in 2014, and continues to refine stem cell transplantation approaches in patients. So far these studies are proving both promising and safe when tested in Canadians.

In his basic science laboratory, Professor Shapiro developed a new means to transplant cells beneath the skin by using a temporary tube to induce new blood vessels to grow. Before then, islet transplants beneath the skin failed universally, but this treatment is now known as the ‘Deviceless Technique’.

In liver transplantation research, Shapiro and his team recently conducted two trials in Edmonton of a new machine designed to incubate and keep donated human livers alive outside the body before transplantation. This technology is radically altering our ability to rescue damaged livers and provide safer livers for transplant. It is also allowing these transplants to happen during regular daylight hours. Professor Shapiro further led a cross-Canadian research team to test similar technologies in heart, lung, kidney and pancreas transplantations as part of the Canadian National Transplant Research Project.

His busy research lab is currently working on more than 30 projects and 15 human clinical trials. One is an exciting immune reset trial. In this study, people newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes are given a combination of targeted medications designed to reset their immune system and repair the pancreas. Besides maintaining an active immunology/transplant research laboratory, Dr. Shapiro has a busy clinical practice specializing in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, surgical oncology, as well as transplant surgery, and was featured in an internationally acclaimed movie about organ transplantation called ‘Memento Mori.’ A shorter-length version of this called ‘Vital Bonds’ was aired last year across Canada by the CBC’s David Suzuki’s 'The Nature of Things. An edited version called ‘Transplanting Hope’ has been aired across the USA as part of PBS. This movie is helping to raise awareness about organ donation.

19 Mar 2019You Can Always Still Be Somebody with Kristina Botelho01:00:22

Kristina Botelho had every reason to fail. Between a challenging youth where she was in and out of foster homes, becoming a teenage mother, and the general challenges of starting and running a business, this woman had a lot on her plate in all senses of the word. However, she knew at a young age that her story was one that was going to be big, bold, and thankfully — not normal. Today, she joins the Inner Circle to share her own experience of changing her thought patterns to manifest into tangible success, and why we should all accept nothing less than greatness in ourselves and our experience in the world. She also talks about how plant-based foods changed her life so much that she now has one of the tastiest and thriving plant-based businesses in Edmonton, Kb&co.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode: Where it all began for Kristina in B.C., where she was raised in a large family that moved a lot and experienced much financial hardship. A very honest and open description of her early relationship with her own mother, her foster homes and how she was pretty much on her own by the 7th grade. The way being in foster care inspired her to be the best mom she could be and show her own children the life she always dreamed of. What partying looked like for her. Not at the typical age, but at the very young age of 11. Why Kristina thinks she didn’t follow the “typical” path, and how our past does not define our future. Her experience of becoming a young mother, which resulted in her moving with her husband to Edmonton. How she began her business career and worked up enough nerve to purchase a Quiznos franchise by the age of 20, and what she learned right away from entering this fast-paced new world. How Kristina mixed her own love of a plant-based diet with her entrepreneurial dreams and business sense. More about her own discovery that a plant-based diet worked wonders for clearing her health issues, and why she is so passionate about whole foods. Her meditation and visualization practices, and the real-life ways they have benefitted her. The most popular dishes at Kb&co. Yum! How she changed the story she was telling herself about money to reflect abundance.

Quotes: “I was 11 going on 19.” “I wanted to prove to people that I could be somebody, and I could do something with my life.” “I’ve always been a dreamer, and I’ve always wanted big things.” “The easy part is giving up, and that option never existed.” “Trust your gut, and stay in your own lane.” “I need to be hands on. You are worthy! When you allow yourself to be seen, the world will open up to you.

Quotes: “This vulnerability has changed who I am, and what I do.” “Vulnerability and I have become friends. Really good friends.” “Share your story. You are worthy of it.” “Take the first step. One decision is all it takes to make a difference.”

10 Sep 2019Opening Up a Seat at the Boardroom with Chantel Cabaj & Elsa Johnson00:49:09

You all made sure Carrie knew about why she needed to book the guest for this week, and she listened! Elsa and Chantel from DirectHer join the Inner Circle, and these two powerhouse female lawyers discuss how and why they created a very successful nonprofit to help women understand and participate in the world of board governance. They talk about their first meeting in law school and how opposites attracted, why women tend to not go for board positions, and how we can grab opportunities for ourselves and encourage others to use their voice. They also talk about how DirectHer helps women get over the intimidation of being on a board, the common themes that come up, and the appreciation they have for men as allies. What You’ll Hear In This Episode: What exactly is DirectHer, and the way the nonprofit empowers women with the knowledge and confidence to serve as board directors and leaders. How founders Elsa and Chantel met in law school, and became great friends and business partners, much to Elsa’s surprise. Like the women that make up the DirectHer Network, Elsa and Chantel lift each other up and support each other through the ups and downs of their careers and lives. DirectHer was born in November 2016, the day after Trump was elected President. The strong visceral reaction both Elsa and Chantel had motivated them and sparked action.

The main reasons why women feel intimidated to join boards, and how DirectHer works to overcome the barriers from all angles. How exactly DirectHer creates knowledge on board governance and gets women over the fear of not knowing what the language in meetings means, the intimidation and that pesky Impostor Syndrome feeling. DirectHer is not only here to increase women's participation in the boardroom but to encourage diversity as a whole and be a voice for all communities that face barriers. What the response has been since they launched, and what we can expect from DirectHer in the future. Examples of language in board meetings that are simple concepts, but can make an outsider feel like a fish out of water. What exactly a board is, what the purpose of a board is, and how it differs from a committee or a task force. How men fit in at DirectHer, and are also helping by being great allies and support. What being on a board can do for a woman professionally, personally, and for the greater discussion of gender equality. Why having a singular skill set or being able to see the big picture are both two great assets to joining a board.

Quotes: “Diversity of thought is what drives innovation.” “We have these systems in place that demonstrate why people have been left out and why they aren’t getting back in.” “I was our audience. I was so scared and self- selecting out. I’m our best customer in that regard.” “Practice interviewing. Practice applying. Practice being on a board, that’s what gives you the experience.” “We are all in it together.” “There is beauty in differences and in vulnerability.”

04 Jun 2019Really Listen To What Your Body Is Saying with Laura Krosky01:01:11

Today on the Inner Circle, it’s a powerful and vulnerable conversation that centers around listening to your body and what it’s telling you. We often allow pain to become our new normal, or spend time searching for answers and trying just to push through another day while going into our “power mode”. Laura Krosky joins Carrie to openly and honestly share her story on illness from breast implants. She talks about why she decided to get them, how they made her very sick for years and how she discovered thousands of women had a story just like hers. Laura also opens up on getting them out, and what it is like to readjust and fully accept a natural body.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode: Laura’s story of being raised in a conservative Christian family, and how that played a role upon her body image and self-confidence as a female. Her love of coaching, holding space for others and showing them the path to accomplish their own dreams. More about Laura’s time working at Zappo’s, and what she loved so much about the job. That Laura was someone in touch with her own body and fitness, which is why not feeling well or in shape was so distant and unexpected for her. The thoughts behind Laura’s decision to get breast implants, and why her body would create a capsule around them and begin to fight them as a foreign object. That Laura felt good for about 2 - 2.5 years until she didn’t. She explains her debilitating symptoms of joint pain, bloating, exhaustion and much more. How her masseuse was the one to plant the seed that her implants may be causing the illness, and why that thought originally felt like a failure to her. Laura’s discovery of thousands of other women that also shared her story, and why it helped her to know she wasn’t alone. That there are great doctors who can help with empathy, knowledge, and compassion. The process of getting an explant, and the life-changing ways it turned her life back around. How awesome her soulmate husband is, and how he showed her support and love for who she is on the inside and the outside. How she feels in her natural body and the adjustments she has made in life moving forward with no implants.

Quotes: “How can I teach a workshop on vulnerability and not stand up and be vulnerable?” “The thought of not being able to control myself felt like a failure for me.” “I started to see the women’s story after story, and I felt like they were all my story.” “There was so much gratitude that happened, now I was back to myself.”

10 Aug 2021Chef Lawrence Duran: Cooking for Life and Mark Wahlberg00:59:47

We often do not see the opportunities that will grace our lives and take us on a path far better than we could ever dream of and for Southern California native Chef Lawrence Duran, that is exactly what happened. Becoming a Chef was inevitable, but becoming a personal chef for The Wahlbergs was destiny. As a child growing up in the valley of the Angels, before he could call himself ‘Chef’’, Lawrence Duran endured the subtle pressure of cooking for himself. With his mother working long hours and a grumbling tummy, he knew he had to eat. McDonald's would suffice many nights, but his taste buds yearned for more – something home-cooked, so he rolled up his sleeves and went to work. His hands were his tools and his imagination was the fuel to his kitchen masterpieces.

He drew inspiration from Julia Childs and Thomas Keller while they played on the television, but his biggest inspiration is his grandmother. He remembers being on the kitchen floor playing with pots and pans while she prepared and cooked for their family. “We have a large family. With 7 kids of her own and several grandchildren, she was always cooking. Every time someone would walk through the door, she would make sure they had something to eat”.

As Lawrence grew older, he continued to learn his grandmothers’ methods of cooking and incorporated them into his own unique style, ultimately moulding him into the chef he is today. During the latter years of his education, Duran transferred to high schools and went on to live with his father. Entering a new high school was not the most ideal situation for him, but little did he know, he was exactly where he was supposed to be. He befriended a boy named Christian, who happened to be the son of the owner of a very well-known catering company in Los Angeles and after graduation, Lawrence began working for Christian’s father's catering company. Simultaneously he worked in construction which funded his time at The Kitchen Academy in Hollywood in the evenings. Juggling construction and culinary school were difficult, but he knew nothing great comes without hard work, so he resiliently continued.

As fate would have it, Mark Wahlberg was in need of a private chef and was friends with the owner of the catering company Duran worked for, Mario’s Catering Company. Mario highly recommended Lawrence to Mr.Wahlberg and Mr.Wahlberg agreed to let Lawrence demonstrate his skill level. He would work construction from 3 am – 1 pm then prep and serve The Wahlberg’s from 3 pm-7 pm for 6 months until he became full-time and quit construction. “Time management is extremely crucial when you’re preparing food for multiple people or preparing certain dishes. Giving yourself ample time, even down to one-tenth of a second, to get each task done is very important and that’s why I love my MTM Predator Watch,” says Duran. “The three chronographs assist me often and allow me to work faster and more precisely. Sometimes I feel like I’m a professional multi-tasker” chuckles Duran. “Sure, I know my ingredients beforehand, but everything needs to cook for an exact amount of time. My Predator keeps me on top of it. I rinse off food without the worry of getting it wet, I can bang it on literally anything and it doesn’t get scratched or break. This thing is stylish and rugged, that’s why I really like it. Special Operations don’t just happen on the battlefield, they happen in the kitchen too!”

He also grew up on a farm and learned the value of hard work and tending to something that is growing. Cory found a community that gave him a safe and bully free zone while attending the Victoria School for the Performing Arts, and yes, it really was like the real life version of FAME. When we spread our wings and try something new, we have the chance to recreate ourselves.

Cory’s talent of using his voice for theater and opera came in handy for his career in design working with people and his on camera work. What it’s really like to balance the artistic side of design and creativity, mixed with the business and numbers aspect of being an entrepreneur. More about Cory’s Design endeavors featuring wedding design, floral arrangement and much more. How Cory got into interiors design, and decided he was more into projects that have a definite ending with structure. Every artist and designer goes through a lot of trial and error. It’s not always as perfect as it appears on Instagram. Why Cory believes that an urban environment can also be a place to connect with nature and greenery.

29 Dec 2020A Perfect Nightmare: Karen Gosbee’s Glittering Marriage and How It Almost Took Her Life01:05:03

Karen Gosbee is an author, advocate against domestic violence, and mother who has been through the full spectrum of life's hardships. She had it all: the successful husband, beautiful kids, big house and a white Range Rover; filling her days with grocery shopping, exercising, gossiping over coffees, shepherding children to and from their after-school activities, all the while looking enviably at her peers. And then she realized she was the only healthy mentor her children had. She had to be the best she could be to give them self-regulation, especially living with a family member that has mental illness and addiction. Living in constant fear. When Karen's husband passed from suicide, she came forward to tell her story hoping it would encourage others to tell their own.

As she shared her story, she realized she was caught up in intimate partner terrorism and had absolutely no idea. Education drove her to amplify awareness of mental health and illness, addiction, intimate partner terrorism, gender inequities, all inequities and the unwarranted variations of care in health, education, justice, social sector etc. depending on who you are and where you come from. Karen's bravery and tenacity are almost unfathomable. Her resilience after a life filled with abuse is awe-striking. She is a force, who is dedicated to sharing her story so more people can prepare themselves for red flags and take precautions when dealing with an abusive situation.

03 Aug 2021Blair Dorsey’s Journey from Lawyer, to CEO of a Multi-Million Dollar Business, to Stay at Home Mom01:08:53

Blair Dorsey started her entrepreneurial career at the age of four when she would draw, make jewelry, or sell other trinkets to the captive audience that worked for her dad. While most kids enjoy taking a break during summer or other school days off, Blair would go to work with her dad and spend her day shadowing different department heads and coming up with business plans. Blair worked her way up in the company and was on the payroll by age eight.

Growing up with a father who taught, encouraged, and fostered an entrepreneurial mindset gave Blair the foundation and drive to excel in school so that she could one day be a business leader herself. A California native, Blair grew up in Irvine and graduated top of her class from University High School. From there, Blair continued the family tradition of Trojans and studied at the University of Southern California. Not quite ready for the real world, Blair decided to further her education at Chapman University School of Law where she earned her JD and became a member of the California Bar a few months after graduation. Blair married her high school sweetheart, Donovan, the following May and a year later they started building their family. Donovan and Blair moved to Las Vegas when their first son was one month old and took advantage of the fallen housing market by buying up to seven houses a day at the auction steps. Two and a half years and another son later the economy was on a rebound and the Dorsey’s were eager to return to California and to start their next business venture. The Dream Junction is the brainchild of six family members: Dad, Brother Trevor, Aunt Jullie, Uncle Paul, Donovan, and Blair. With Blair leading the way as CEO, The Dream Junction grew from an idea to a multimillion-dollar company within a few short years. Today The Dream Junction does digital printing on textiles for some of the world’s largest e-commerce and brick-and-mortar stores. Chances are if you have bought a shirt from a Facebook link or design-your-own site, The Dream Junction was behind the scenes doing both the printing and the fulfillment of your order.

With the internal need to constantly improve, innovate, and disrupt, Blair founded another company in 2016 that revolutionized the direct-to-garment printing industry with their invention of the OvalJet printer. The OvalJet is now powering The Dream Junction and has been the belle of the ball at printing and textile conventions worldwide. Today Blair, Donovan, their two sons (ages 6 and 7), and daughter (age 3) live in San Juan Capistrano and spend summers at their home on the lake in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The Dream Junction has an office for the Dorsey kids as they beg to spend time at “the working shop”. Nothing could make Blair happier than continuing the tradition of working alongside of her children and teaching them how to be business leaders themselves.

20 Dec 2020Mandy Trapp: December 21st is the Great Transformation. Are you ready?00:40:09

This week's episode is a special one; Jupiter and Saturn will appear so close together on December 21, 2020 that it will seem almost as though they are a single star. According to The Planetary Society, they have not been this close in 400 years. This celestial event inspired us to publish a day early, so you may have the chance to experience what has been dubbed the "Christmas Star" for yourselves! Mandy Trapp shared her insight with the Inner Circle on this rare event, her journey to becoming a full-time meditation and mindfulness professional, and so much more. Before opening Canada’s first mainstream meditation centre in 2016, Mandy Trapp had spent nearly 20 years studying and teaching mindfulness and meditation. As a student of Dr. Deepak Chopra, Mandy was learning how to blend ancient wisdom with modern science and integrated the teachings back into her own life, as a busy mom of 3. And while she was finding great success for herself, she couldn’t help but to share it in her existing work as an athletic trainer with both weekend warriors and high performance athletes.

The demand for her education and leadership with mental and emotional health was beginning to tip the scales and in 2012, she decided to commit herself full-time to the growing field of meditation and mindfulness. Lifestyle Meditation was formed later that year and began with teacher training programs written and delivered by Mandy. Now, Lifestyle Meditation has grown to include a team of facilitators and international training venues, while certifying over 3000 meditation teachers to date. Mandy’s teaching style is honest, down to earth, and full of wisdom.

She’s a fierce advocate for those struggling to be seen, to be heard, and to belong. Her goal is to empower others by bringing them back to themselves and support them to seek the meaning in their suffering while using their struggles as a means for connection rather than disconnection. Whether through her work in the human trafficking trade abroad, or with homeless and endangered youth locally, Mandy has created programs, raised money, and built initiatives that have had a tremendous ripple effect that has been sustainable and long-lasting.

What You’ll Hear In This Episode: Gina was a buyer for a men’s store, and was 31 and not married when her daughter Gabby came into her life in a very unexpected way. Gina’s beautiful experience of fostering Gabby, and how the two synced up and she knew she was changed forever. How Gina went from fostering Gabby to adopting her, and what that decision was like for herself and the close people around her. On their first date, Gina’s husband Matt took both Gina and Gabby out and even made it past a baby meltdown. It is very important for Gina that as a biracial family, her children have role models and plentiful representation of color that they can feel good about. Gina recognizes what she can do for her adopted children, such as deeply listen and love unconditionally. She also recognizes what she can’t do, like take away trauma or fix their hurt. The different origin stories and personalities of all 10 children, and what gifts and lessons they have given to Gina. What it was like for Gina and Matt to adopt from Ethiopia, and how they know they made the right choice. The beautiful way in which these brothers and sisters are bonded for life, and treat each other with mutual respect and unconditional loyalty. The special role that Pops has in their life as the irreplaceable beloved grandfather. The details on how Gina home schools her children and manages to feed such a large crew every night!

Quotes: “You don’t know the capacity of your heart has to hold until your heart holds it.” “You have no control over the love that your heart can fill within the blink of an eye.” “I live in a state of ‘never say never’.” “I can’t fix their hurt, but I can be there to listen.” “It takes honesty to look inside yourself.”

20 Aug 2019Playing By Your Own Book with Cal Callahan00:58:58

John “Cal” Callahan uses his experience and wisdom to give men permission to question their own process, however, it shows up for them. He joins the Inner Circle today to share how really listening to our intuition can be life-changing in ways we can’t even anticipate. John went from Wall Street, golf meetings, and rubbing elbows with celebrities to awakening to a new path of spirituality and self-discovery. He reminds us that it's never too late to look at the world from a new lens and reframe our purpose.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode: John grew up in a small town in Maine and learned the importance of working hard from his parents. What led John to a career in Wall Street, and what it was like to work in such a pressure cooker of a business. Whether it was in the corporate world or a sports team, John loves the camaraderie and support that comes from working within a team. What bad habits and vices John observed he was involved with, and how they were numbing and distracting him from the core of who he was and really wanted to be. That your career should complement your identity rather than define it. John has made a lifetime of defining himself by his values, despite what others may think. What a plant-based medicine ceremony is, and what the journey did for John in terms of seeing how connected he was. When we start to let go of our fears and doubts, we can become part of a larger experience around us. John’s recent experience of renewing his vows with his wife, and how they agreed on love in terms of how they are now in the present moment, rather than decades ago. What’s next for John in the creative process, and the podcast and coaching groups that are unfolding.

Quotes: “There’s not enough men out there that are giving other men permission to do the work.” “I try to not play by the same playbook as everyone.” “I started to collect brothers and sisters on the same path of wondering why we are here.” “It doesn’t have to be about an achievement-based lifestyle.”

Candice and Bill Farrell are breeders of Goldendoodles, located on the outskirts of Red Deer, Alberta. Their ultimate goal is to produce happy, healthy, loving and well-socialized family pets. Candice and Bill take their dog rearing extremely seriously; you won’t find their dogs in cages and treated like livestock. They are all family pets that either live with them or with one of their Guardian Families. The dogs and puppies are bred, raised and cared for with love and attention every single day. They are also provided with top quality food, regular vet care, clean surroundings, regular grooming and toys for their entertainment. Candice says of her husband, “The doodles and I are lucky to have my husband work long days with us when he is home on his days off. He works as hard as I do while he’s home and jokes that he has to go back to work to get a break.” The love for the business and for the animals is very obvious and strong with these two!

Candice and Bill are dedicated to always giving their all when it comes to the Doodles; they do things the right way, even though is hard work. They take pride in taking care of all the dogs to the highest degree, and it shows in the happiness of the dogs when they are picked up to go to their new homes. 06 Nov 2018Share Your Sparkle with Rachel Mielke, CEO & Founder of Hillberg & Berk00:38:49

Rachel Mielke believes that through empowering others, we can change the world. The fact that she is named one of the Top 100 Female Entrepreneurs in Canada is just icing on the already sparkly cake. Rachel is the Founder and CEO of Hillberg & Berk, and has grown the company culture to be a reflection of the jewelry they make - high value, beautiful and existing to help others find their voice. She puts extreme thought and care into all aspects of her company, whether it’s building the right team, finding her own mentors or being one for the next generation, or designing a custom made piece for Queen Elizabeth, an Olympic athlete, or the every day hard working woman.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode: The brilliant marketing move of “Share Your Sparkle” that Hillberg & Berk does to empower and give gratitude to others. How the magic of Hillberg & Berk was born while Rachel made jewelry at her kitchen table. Rachel’s passion for creating beautiful, high quality and long lasting jewelry and how she mixes it both in the tangible and intangible to empower women across the globe. How the models of Hillberg & Berk aren’t just models, they are role models. The real unbelievable behind the scenes story of Rachel’s appearance on “Dragon’s Den” that hardly anyone knows about, and the impact Brett Wilson has instilled in her as a partner. A few of the reasons why having a variety of mentors are fundamental at every level of the entrepreneurial journey. What shifted in both growth and opportunities for Rachel when Hillberg & Berk decided to pursue opening up retail locations. What key qualities Rachel sees in businesses that make it through difficult and challenging times. The critical need to understand where your skills and passions lie, and to lean into the areas where you can add value to the company as you scale up throughout your journey. The magical and life-changing opportunity to design and create a piece of jewelry that was presented (and worn six times!) Queen Elizabeth. The special relationship that Hillberg & Berk has with the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic committees over the last two Olympic games. Why Rachel felt it was important to share her own story on postpartum anxiety and depression. A few of Rachel’s best advice for female entrepreneurs: lean in to risk, don’t be afraid to dream big, be different, recalibrate your priorities daily, and find others around you to help support your goals.

Quotes: (When I put on the jewelry) “I felt inspired. I felt empowered. And I wanted to give that to other women.” - R “You have to have a lot of mentors. You won’t learn everything you need from just one person.” - R “In business, the only constant is that things are always going to change.” -R “There was a lot of competencies in the company, for building out a retail strategy and for executing it in a unique and different way, and people really reacted to that.” - R “I feel it’s important to share honestly and openly about struggles that we go through.” - R “As an entrepreneur, one of the hardest things is to say “no” and stay focused.” - R

15 Oct 2019Business Growth and Personal Growth go Hand in Hand with Natalie MacNeil00:53:32

Building a million dollar business is a huge accomplishment for Natalie MacNeil, but it doesn’t even come close to stopping there for this Emmy Award Winning media entrepreneur. Natalie is devoted to expanding human potential for herself and others, and dedicated to living a deeply meaningful life. She joins The Inner Circle to talk with Carrie about her powerful N.E.T. technique and why you will want to start using it immediately in everyday life. Natalie also talks about her film projects, the inspiration behind her new book The Rituals, and what’s next for her as she transitions from the She Takes on the World blog to a new updated version of herself and her brand.

What You’ll Hear In This Episode: Natalie spent so much time feeling like she had to be someone in order to succeed, and she is at a point where she wants to live and embrace all her dimensions. There will never be a better lesson about business than jumping in and learning for yourself. While Natalie studied business in University, she got a firsthand education by being an entrepreneur. Natalie shows us that we shouldn’t be afraid to dive in and embrace new parts of our identity, and maybe let go of those that no longer serve us. She is taking the big leap of rebranding her blog, She Takes on the World, to level up to meet the current version of herself. Natalie co-produced the interactive film experience, Out My Window, and it was the world’s first 360 interactive documentary. The film won an Emmy, and viewers got an inside look at someone’s life in an initiative and immersive way. Natalie knows that her capacity to succeed in the external world is directly related to her inner experience. The N.E.T. (No Extra Time) principle calls for utilizing our time in a way that best serves us.

While we have things we all do in a day, you can make that part of your mindfulness practice. Examples would include a grounding exercise in the shower, taking a few calming deep breaths and at red lights, and using the little spaces of silence throughout the day to practice gratitude. She Takes on the World has had 1,000,000 + entrepreneurs from almost every country come to the site for inspiration, action steps, and support.  Natalie discusses accomplishing our goals one at a time as a 3-4 month focus, rather than trying to do everything at once. When we choose to hear the stories of others, we get a huge part of what is available to us in the human experience. Natalie’s new book, The Rituals, includes many beautiful practices that make huge differences.

Quotes: “When a creative wave comes, you have to ride it until the bitter end.” “The human experience is messy, beautiful, and wild and painful. We can hold all of those truths.” “I need to feel deeply held and grounded in order to show up the way I show up.” “You are enough and more, and worthy of your dreams.” “Inspiration without taking action serves a purpose, but it’s not as powerful.”

29 Oct 2019Turning Heartbreak into Education and Power with Shelly MacInnis-Wynn01:04:34

Shelly MacInnis-Wynn is a brave, vulnerable, and inspiring woman and mother. She is also someone that endured an unimaginable heartbreak when her husband, Const. David Wynn of the RCMP, lost his life after being shot in the line of duty after responding to a call. This week, Shelly speaks publicly for the first time since David’s death about how she will never be the same, and the impact this tragic event has had upon her and her family. Shelly details that fateful night, and the moments after, spent in David’s final days in the hospital. She uses her voice and heartbreak to change practices and procedures that hopefully will never have another family in her situation suffer again. Shelly’s story is an example of strength and using the past to make the future better.

What You’ll Hear In This Episode:

  • Shelly walks us through that fateful night that her husband, Const. David Wynn of the Alberta RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police), responded to a call and got shot.
  • The ways Shelly honors David’s spirit as she moves forward as best she can, including his beloved sense of humor and memorable laugh.
  • The heartbreaking moment of when she had to tell her children, a moment that will haunt her forever.
  • Shelly and David spent the previous summer together, and she is so grateful that they got time with their family. Life is precious, and Shelly urges us to realize this before it is too late.
  • Stories about the fellow RCMP officers that supported Shelly during this time, and also the truthful ways that they failed both her and David through the process.
  • Shelly is changed forever, but she has the perspective of it changing her for the better. She took what went wrong in her situation and is taking action to prevent it from happening to others, and families will get the support that they need.
  • Home is a safe space for Shelly and her children, and there is not a day that doesn’t go by where they don’t lovingly remember or discuss a memory of David.
  • How Shelly worked on her anger so she could concentrate on moving forward.
  • As time goes on we get stronger, and it’s up to us to listen and allow others to help us.
  • We look at first responders as the superheroes they are, but we also must remember that they are human beings too and need support.

Quotes:

  • “Now it’s time to find the new me, because I will never be the same person that I was before this happened.”
  • “This is my chance to discover what it is that I can do.”
  • “We spent the whole summer together as a family, and it was the best.”

09 Mar 2021Lazina McKenzie: Community Builder, the Entrepreneurial Spirit and the Road Less Travelled01:03:52

Lazina McKenzie is in love with entrepreneurial spirit. She loves working with organizations and teaching people. It was in 2010 when Lazina got one of those goose-bumpy, this-is-what-life’s-about moments. She was volunteering with Suit Yourself, which offers a helping hand to disadvantaged women seeking employment by providing them with free, quality clothing and accessories. That’s when she saw firsthand how discovering a sense of style can give a person an extra boost of confidence when they need it most. So in 2011, with work experience in hand, Lazina McKenzie chose to look away from the traditional corporate route to create and build something that was uniquely hers. She quit her MBA-level, MBA-paying job, started L2 Style, and never looked back. Lazina's goal has been to provide real, actionable training, advice and tools to all clients. But she's not just about business. Lazina loves to play any Frisbee sport she can, goes hiking regularly, and loves to cook and eat. She'll go anywhere, do anything (at least once) and see anything. Everything. Lazina is a community booster, a style booster, even a mood booster.

Her end goal is to get involved in anything she can to contribute towards building a positive and interesting network around her. Lazina steps into the Inner Circle this week to share her struggles, her high moments, and everything in between. While dealing with rheumatoid arthritis, family heartache, and more, she was running a business as an entrepreneur. Her life path has never led her in an anticipated direction, and she takes it all in stride with the lessons she learned in hand. This week, let Lazina inspire you to take the road less travelled.

What a journey! Today's special guest, Kacie Rainey is stepping into our Inner Circle to tell her tale. S

he specializes in 3D hyper-realism, certified in "paramedical micro-pigmentation specialist" who works with the best doctors fighting breast cancer. What You’ll Hear in This Episode: Kacie recalls her raw life and talks about how the pain to purpose ratio lead her into her growth path. Her passion for entrepreneurship and helping others was given to her by her dad. He was a go-getter, he was highly respected in the business world based on his kindness and willingness to give everyone a chance, and her role model.

She talks about when she was bullied in school, how it has changed today with cellphones and Social Media, how it impacts the lives of everyone and her process of taking pain from different areas of her life and letting them go until she could say them without crying. As her father's strength weakened, he gathered his courage and guided the family into peacefulness and taught her the importance of union, braveness, and change. Every year her dad used to write a letter to everyone in the family, right until the last week before he passed, he updated the "last letter" and read it to them. Kacie explains her formula for success, mindset plus practice is what will transform your life, and how to achieve it. After Business School Kacie didn't know what direction to go until she got her "A-HA" moment when she stopped looking for it.

Quotes: ”Life is a privilege, each day is a privilege, do right by others, treat people how you would like to be treated, always give more than you’ll ever take in life, but lead by example”. ”Your purpose comes from a place from taking pain and turning it into a purpose”. "Grief can just set up in your heart and sit there until you choose to unlock it". "He read his letter, and it was the most beautiful pain you'll ever experience in your life because you got to have that moment with that person". "It wasn't closure, it was a send-off back into the world". "Your body is just matter and your soul is what carries on". "When you know your purpose, you don't even question it, you just do it".

26 Jan 2021MmmathMania! An Exciting New Resource to Help Parents, Teachers and Kids with Math00:44:44

Vanessa McLeod is the founder and CEO of MMMathMania, an online math teaching resource that utilizes games as a learning tool for children. She has been teaching for almost 20 years, mostly at the grade 2 or 3 level, but has taught everything from grade 1 to 5. She's the very proud Mom of an 8 year old son named Desmond, who both love being active and spending time sledding and exploring nature outside together. Vanessa is the founder of MMMathMania, but she couldn't be doing any of this without her amazing team: Ashley Elford, Nadine Taylor Wilson , Silvia Greco, Jamie Whalen and Erin Radloff are all a HUGE part of the magic. As much as Vanessa loves math and as good as she is at it, she claims to be equally bad at art, and her students know it. In fact, she got a note from one of her students one day this year that read "Dear Ms M. I like math just like you. But the thing that is different about me is that I am also good at art."

Vanessa has been a self-proclaimed math geek for as long as she can remember (well except for that year in high school, she never did pass Math 31). Her love for all things math started early. In kindergarten one of Vanessa's "show and tells" was demonstrating how she could add dice together as soon as they hit the table. One of her favourite Christmas presents ever was an analogue watch, so she could learn to tell time! Besides numbers, a few of her other favourite things include spending time with her family and friends, Orange Theory Fitness, reading, hot tubs, animals, and eating Indian and Vietnamese food.

Vanessa's passion for teaching, appreciation for her team, and excitement for math all shine through in this heartwarming episode. Getting children involved in math and learning in a way that resonates with them is something every parent will find helpful, and Vanessa's outlook on teaching, learning, and encouraging children at their own pace is an invaluable lesson for those who live and work with children.
