23 Aug 2024425. The Schwa: How One TINY Sound Can Make a HUGE Difference [Revisiting favorite episodes]00:39:51

We’re revisiting some of our most popular and favorite episodes on the podcast.

I mention the schwa almost every time I speak about American English. That’s because this vowel is all over the place, and once you hear it, you never stop hearing it 🙂

Also, you will find yourself investing much less energy in speaking, which is also important 🙂

Tune in and learn more about this special vowel and how to use it. And let me know what you think in the comments below.

Check out a new episode about the schwa here: https://hadarshemesh.com/podcast/157/

We’re revisiting some of our most popular and favorite episodes on the podcast.

As an English learner, you must have wondered – what are the things that are preventing me from reaching a breakthrough in English?

You may think it’s just more vocabulary or phrasal verbs, and maybe all those fancy tenses that people use… When in fact, it’s something a lot more basic and primal.
It’s not what ELSE you need to learn, but instead – it’s how YOU think about yourself when speaking English.

Yes, how we think about our English has a big part in how confident we feel when speaking English. Are we thinking kind and empowering thoughts?
Or are we being harsh and critical?
In this episode, I’ll dive deep into explaining how you can reach a breakthrough simply by changing the way you think about your English.

BECCA: Ridiculous, right? Nine weeks pregnant. In a bar. Drinking.

HOWIE: You said she wasn’t drinking.

BECCA: No, she said. But you know Izzy. Plus the place was probably clogged with cigarette smoke.

HOWIE: Not anymore. Clean Indoor Air Act.

BECCA: She was in Yonkers. You think they enforce that in Yonkers?

HOWIE: I wouldn’t worry about it. If the babies in France turn out okay, I’m sure this one’ll be fine too.

BECCA: You think this is funny, Howie?

HOWIE: Of course not. But you need to relax about it. Izzy could be right.

BECCA: About what?

HOWIE: The baby, getting her on track. It can wake a person up. It did us.

BECCA: She was bragging about a bar fight.

HOWIE: It wasn’t a bar fight.

BECCA: They were in a bar! Fighting!

HOWIE: Izzy hit someone, she didn’t get into a fight. Blows were never exchanged.

BECCA: What is your point? It’s okay for a pregnant woman to be punching people?

HOWIE: Well so long as they don’t punch her back, it’s probably all right.

BECCA: What are you—? Why are you defending her?

HOWIE: I’m not. I just think it’s silly to get worked up about it.

BECCA: I’m not worked up. I’m just saying.

HOWIE: You’re right, it’s a mess, but what can we do? Maybe it’ll be fine. Izzy’s not a moron. Okay, she acts like one sometimes but... A baby can be good for a person.

BECCA: I know that, Howie.

HOWIE: Alright then.

16 Aug 2024424. How to effectively practice your intonation in English [Revisiting favorite episodes]00:42:43

We’re revisiting some of our most popular and favorite episodes on the podcast.

In this podcast episode I elaborate on how to practice it effectively and integrate it into your day-to-day speech.

Because forming a sentence is not enough. And making the right sounds isn’t enough. It’s the intonation that determines the meaning of the sentence: is it a question or a statement? Is it a joke and you’re just being sarcastic? This is also where culture and your inner feelings are thrown into the mix. Intonation conveys ALL of that.

To do that you need to know how to practice! This is why I also share my most effective practice techniques that I’ve used myself and with my students, that are going to help you improve your intonation and deliver your message in a clear way.

It’s not about you sounding more American and losing your identity. It’s about you feeling amazing in your own skin when you communicate in English.

12 Jan 202194. How to Pronounce Gal Gadot’s name with an Israeli Accent00:12:21

Gal Gadot’s name pronunciation with an Israeli accent is quite different from how most English speakers pronounce it. And now that Wonder Woman 1984 is OUT, let’s talk about how to pronounce Gal Gadot’s name correctly. As an Israeli, I can’t ignore the fact that the way English speakers pronounce her name is quite different than how we pronounce it in Hebrew.
So today I’ll teach you how to speak with an ISRAELI ACCENT 😉 But I’ll also mention why I think Gal is so awesome when it comes to English.

Also, a few fun facts about Gal:

  • Her first name means ‘wave’ and her last name means ‘riverbanks’
  • Gal Gadot is her REAL name
  • When she was 18 she was ‘Miss Israel’
  • When she lived in Tel Aviv we lived 10 minutes away from each other
  • Samara Bay, a good friend and a guest on my channel was Gal Gadot’s dialect coach on WW1984
  • I have yet to find someone who does a really good impression of Gal and her pronunciation. For example, this doesn’t sound like an Israeli Accent to me: https://youtu.be/7Nv1KoqM6vc
  • In general I haven’t found anyone pulling off a REALLY good Israeli accent. If you know of someone, let me know in the comments.
Even though I coached most of Gal’s Israel actor-friends, I never got to personally work with Gal

02 Feb 2021100. A native English speaker criticized my English… This is my response00:19:35

What do you do when people criticize your English? Not in a good, loving way, but in a demeaning and patronizing way?

When I get negative comments and criticism (and I do, a lot) I usually don’t respond. But there was something about a comment I received on YouTube recently that triggered me, so I decided to respond.

I wanted to do that so you’ll see that I, too, receive negative feedback, and I don’t let it get to me – and neither should you.

But also, I wanted to show you what Native Speakerism is – the assumption that a select group of people (or teachers) with a certain linguistic background is superior to other groups who don’t share the same background. I think it’s important that we identify it when we see it – as it takes on many forms – and call people out on it.

If you feel like sharing a negative comment you received – write it in the comments, and add your response after listening to this episode!

The video there the comment appeared https://youtu.be/pM1srOv9Mds

16 Feb 2021103. Why your Voice Matters00:14:51

The fear of speaking in a second language or in public can be crippling.
That knot that pushes your words further down into your chest. Do you know it?

We often think about these things as if they are OUR OWN issues.
OUR problems, OUR English.
But what if English is just a manifestation of something bigger that prevents us from speaking?
What if our tendency to mute ourselves is not just English but something generational, that unless we break the chain, we will keep passing it onward?

In this podcast I share with you some of the struggles I’ve been facing recently around creating content during uncertain times, and how I found inspiration in an unexpected place – My ancestors.

I recorded this podcast, after listening to Amanda Gorman’s Ted talk called Using Your Voice is a Political Choice.

16 Mar 2021110. How to find the primary stress in words00:22:05

One of the most challenging, and sometimes frustrating, aspects of English is predicting where the primary stress should be in a word.
Primary stress is the one syllable in a word that sticks out the most: it’s longer, louder, and higher in pitch.
In this episode, we’ll dive deep into the world of primary stress and I’ll teach you, first, how to identify it, and then – how to predict it in some cases.
And if you know me, you know that effective practice is my THING.
So I’ll show you my 3-step system for identifying and practicing the primary stress.
Use it to see results and feel more confident and clear when communicating.

And to make it fun, you’ll also find a short quiz in the end.

30 Mar 2021114. What I learned about English fluency from… DANCE CLASSES ??00:11:17

If you’ve learned to dance, I assume it included moving your body and not just watching other people move, right? Same goes if you learned how to ride a bicycle or play the piano.

Well, you know what? The same goes for learning English!
If you want to become fluent – so fluent that you sometimes can’t tell the difference between speaking in English or your native language because they both feel so natural – you have to put what you learn into practice, which means – SPEAKING!

This is how you acquire a new habit. Eventually you won’t think much about a new word or sound because it will become automatic.
In this episode I’ll share some memories from my days in dance class (and what I learned from that experience). Because it’s not just about dancing, it’s about learning any new thing, including English.

02 Apr 2021115. How the universal laws work with language learning00:44:05

Speaking a second language can create insecurities, fears, and frustrations. These feelings sometimes pop up when we hear ourselves speaking, and we feel that we’re far from the ideal we have in our mind.

We listen to our English and determine if we’re powerful or not.
We allow these thoughts to define our identity and self-worth.
But what if we looked at it from a different perspective?

What if we realized that our thoughts, visualizations, and energy regarding the way we see ourselves are MORE important than the language itself?

In this episode you’ll hear my conversation with Kisma, who’s a prosperity code mentor, about how this approach can support you on your English journey, and in life – and how you can step into your inner power.

15 Jun 2021132. Who Moved My Word Stress?!?! ?00:14:10

In this episode, I’ll talk about phrases and how the stress and rhythm in a phrase may CHANGE based on the function of the phrase in the sentence.

For example, if you take a phrase like ‘last minute’, then in a simple sentence like “They finished their project at the last minute”, MINUTE is usually stressed in a neutral intonation. But if you take the phrase and use it before a noun, as in “a last-minute decision”, LAST will be stressed more than ‘minute’.

Listen to the episode and find out about more examples like this, and find out why we don’t put the plural ‘s’ in phrases like “3-year-old boy”.

Also, have you ever noticed this change in stress and rhythm in English? Let me know in the comments below.

Are you a lawyer? Or do you like legal drama in TV or movies? If yes, you must be familiar with words you rarely hear in the ‘real world’ – like ‘attorney’ or ‘warrant’.

Since I love ‘Law and Order’, ‘Better Call Saul’ and any other show that has the phrase ‘Objection, Your Honor’ at least once every episode – I decided to devote one podcast episode to talking about legal vocabulary.

In this episode I’ve compiled just for you some of the most common terms in the field of law so you’ll know how to pronounce them effortlessly and confidently the next time you’re in court, or…just…the next time you want to impress your friends!

What is your favorite legal word? Is it on the list? Do you know how to pronounce it? You can look for more legal terms here: https://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/

09 Jul 2021139. Can English learners become English teachers?00:10:42

In this ‘Ask Hadar’ podcast episode I’m answering Silvana, an English learner from Brazil, who wants to become an English teacher. Silvana isn’t sure she can do it, because she still has a lot to learn herself. I get asked this question a lot – whether non-native speakers of English should teach the language.
And I always say – absolutely. If pursuing a teaching career is what you want, don’t let anyone – teachers or colleagues – put you down because you’re not a native speaker of English. Because teaching is so much more than transforming knowledge, especially in this day and age.
In this episode, I share some thoughts on how to know you’re doing a good job teaching English, whether you’re a native speaker or not.

27 Jul 2021144. What Makes a GOOD English Teacher?00:18:19

What makes a good English teacher?
So many people settle for English teaching that’s not right for them because it’s comfortable and they don’t believe they can find something better.
They keep taking English lessons with the wrong teacher for them because it’s either close to home, it’s familiar, it’s cheap, they feel bad leaving the teacher, it doesn’t require them to do any research, or it simply allows them to stay in their comfort zone.

  • Have YOU ever taken English classes with a private teacher or in a group, but still felt STUCK?
  • Are you learning English and wondering how you can improve your training?
  • Are you teaching English and looking to take your work to the next level?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, this episode is a must-watch for you!
