We have something we want to express and if we're lucky, what we've created is a vessel for meaning..............each person who comes up to the object, the image we create, they are going to bring their own image, their own background to it. And that's as true as any story we tell."  Benjamin Frey

He joined an art commune that the group called The Academy.  Wanderlust has sent Ben on various life adventures including a time in Paris and selling his work on the streets of New York. The constant in his life has been pursuing his artistic vision with relentless passion. Trés Taylor https://www.trestaylor.com/ was a biochemist with a passion for writing. He was at a turning point in his life when a paintbrush fell from the sky and landed in his hand. She "caught him" as he stepped into this new life, and together, they built a career as folk artists on a spiritual journey. This is the first part of a two-episode conversation that will inspire you to follow your own hero's journey through "rediscovering joy."  In the preamble discussion, Douglas and Will discuss the Tuscon Gem Show, getting back to the glass studio, and jury bait.

27 Feb 2023Magic Carpet Ride/ Trés & Helene Taylor01:15:13

Trés & Helene Taylor https://www.trestaylor.com/ took a leap of faith in 2019 by relocating to Selma, Alabama, to further civil rights activism through their art. As they stood in the doorway of their home for the first time, they both cried, but for very different reasons. Helene expressed tears of joy, but for Trés, it was fear.  In this episode, the Taylors share the "signs from the universe" that have directed them along the way, even during the difficult times when facing their mortality. These signs have served as encouragement to hop on that "magic carpet ride" and not look back.

In the preamble discussion, Douglas and Will discuss family distractions, exhibitor theft, reality show opportunities, and when your art is used for show publicity.

As a young artist in the Montreal art scene, Julia Gilmore http://www.juliagilmore.ca/ discovered that she thrived from interacting with her audience and shifted gears. She formed an indie-punk band where she wrote and performed her original music for many years. Eventually, she discovered that her life lacked something she couldn't identify until the birth of her son. She longed for the tangible creation of her fine art, combined with the interaction of her collectors.  Armed with tubes of oil paint and a palette knife, she began to carve and create paintings that elevate the ordinary prosaic subject matter to a vibrant exuberant level of iconic imagery by using vintage objects to tell a story and make visceral connections with memory and the past. In her artistic view, she paints a world with intense beauty, even in mundane everyday objects. Her artwork re-examines the temporal world around her in a direct, straightforward joie de vivre expression of vivid color and gestural texture that reaffirms her zest and love for life.

In the preamble discussion, Douglas and Will discuss the grief of not jurying into one of your best shows, the final tour for the Radtke's, and when the elusive show doesn't meet your expectations.

Visual artists Douglas Sigwarth https://www.sigwarthglass.com/ and Will Armstrong http://www.willarmstrongart.com/ co-host and discuss topics affecting working artists. Each episode is a deep dive into a conversation with a guest artist who shares their unique experiences as an independent professional artist.

29 May 2023Risk Factor/ Erica Iman01:35:36

When Erica Iman http://ericaiman.com/ was a middle school art teacher fresh out of college, she recognized a trend among her coworkers. Her fellow teachers were counting down to retirement. She also identified that her favorite educators were those who led interesting lives. This prompted her to experience life and get outside her personal bubble. Erica and her husband joined the Peace Corps and spent two years of service in Mongolia. Her experiences in Asia fueled her drive to pursue her own art practice with ceramics as her medium. After years of working with clay, Erica's curiosity inspired her to explore 2D paintings that work seamlessly within her entire artistic vision. Erica's work has garnered many notable awards, and reputable shows look to her as a voice when selecting their artist exhibitors. Tune in to her thought-provoking conversation.

26 Jun 2023Nature AND Nurture/ Jeffrey Zachmann and Carl Zachmann01:27:24

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? It's difficult to say regarding this father/ son pair of kinetic sculptors. Jeffrey Zachmann http://www.zachmann.com/brought his son Carl Zachmann https://carlzachmann.com/ on the road with him throughout his career as an independent artist. It is no wonder that Carl eventually followed step with his dad after exploring his interest in engineering and archeology. What seemed like a random collection of interests coalesced around his body of work involving gears and artifacts, encouraging the viewer to go internal. Conversely, Jeffrey's work is a lively experience that allows his collectors to actively engage in the movement within his pieces which disarms them and allows their natural and unfiltered reactions to emerge. These men are extremely creative, and their stories about their experiences on the road are truly entertaining.

In the preamble conversation, Douglas and Will discuss hiding from tornadoes, canceling a show, and mistaken identities.

21 Aug 2023Paint with a Seriousness/ Beth Bojarski01:20:24

When it comes to painting, Beth Bojarski https://bethbojarski.com/ has three rules. "Don't take yourself too seriously. Don't take your subject matter too seriously.  But paint with a seriousness." Beth compares her creative process to looking up at the clouds and seeing what imagery emerges. Her characters arise from the board as she works tirelessly to allow the humanity to show through her subjects while expressing her clever sense of humor.

04 Sep 2023No Limitations/ Marlene Rose01:39:07

When Marlene Rose https://marlenerose.com/ discovered molten glass, she was energized by the adrenaline rush of the material. While pursuing her BFA, she learned that glass could be used for more than just craft, but as a means to convey an idea of what she wanted to say. Although glassblowing was more common at the time, she was drawn to an ancient technique of sand casting, typically used for metal. Sculpting molten glass in a mold of sand sent her in a direction where everything was new and exciting with no limitations.

02 Oct 2023Honoring the Past in Present Time/ Mick & Paige Whitcomb01:35:10

The Whitcomb's are both artists working on their own bodies of work in different mediums. Each captures elements of the past presented with a contemporary eye. Mick Whitcomb https://www.artifactsbynomad.com/ is fixated on the American Machine Age and the advent of electric lighting. He transforms 19th-century machines and scientific instruments into utilitarian sculptures. Paige Whitcomb https://www.paigewhitcomb.com/ creates photos using the traditional method of wet collodion photography with an authentic 19th-century studio camera. She creates tintypes to capture a staged fictional world. Her images are the opposite of modern photography; in a society where anyone can take a picture anywhere, her meticulously staged scenes allow the viewer to see the world through the artist’s perspective, which is often an allegorical view of modern culture.

27 Nov 2023State of Bliss/ James and Carrie Pearce01:17:34

Working Artists! You are not alone! Listen to these entertaining and inspirational podcast conversations with working artists.

Carrie Pearce https://www.carriepearce.com/ experienced every artist's nightmare, a creative block. Fearing that her creativity was broken, she went back to school to teach and in the process, discovered her bliss. This metamorphosis propelled her forward into a new body of mixed media work.  James Pearce https://pearcepearce.com/ has been working with wood his entire life, inspired by the generations of woodworkers before him. James is fascinated with mechanisms and implements them into his aesthetic. He struggles with the two sides of his brain that argue between his work being functional versus sculptural. An interesting conversation with an amazing artist couple.

In today’s preamble, the hosts talk about commission shows, coming home with COVID, and another round of ankle surgery.

Working Artists! You are not alone! Listen to these entertaining and inspirational podcast conversations with working artists.

As a child, Athlone Clarke https://www.athloneclarke.com/ used his drawings to communicate with his mother, who passed away giving birth to him. This therapeutic activity developed a perception in Athlone that is the foundation of his creative process as a visionary artist. When describing his artistic style, Athlone says he wants to be surprised with each artistic outcome and avoids defining limits that will "contribute to the building of his own prison." He aims to make his most authentic work and "leave his fingerprint on the wall of life." A genuinely inspirational conversation.

Working Artists! You are not alone! Listen to these entertaining and inspirational podcast conversations with working artists.

Step into the mind of Matthew Naftzger! "Stubborn!" he says, "I don't want to work in a shitty job just to pay for an expensive house. I don't even want to make artwork I don't want to make." Living and working out of a box truck or buying abandoned houses to renovate are ways he feels free. In his pursuit of "choosing a life," Matthew describes how he has adapted his behavior to how his brain works. Discovering as an adult that he experiences ADHD brought into focus the "self-taught mechanisms" he's used to convert "circular thinking to linear thinking." Matthew is an artist who works in various mediums, such as metal sculpture, jewelry, and painting. This conversation shares his experiences with mental health while listening to the universe along the way. https://matthew.works/

19 Feb 2024Paying Your Dues/ Christopher Jeffries01:18:16

Working Artists! You are not alone! Listen to these entertaining and inspirational podcast conversations with working artists.

When Christopher Jefferies caught the glassblowing bug in high school, he charted a course that would ultimately result in building his own glass shop by "paying his dues." From working on Dale Chihuly's team to sleeping on the floor of a Czech hot shop, Christopher immersed himself in the fast-paced environment of production glass studios that created hundreds of pieces daily. Once he launched his own studio, his work evolved into multiple-element wall installations on a large scale. Christopher talks about going after those "big fish" on the art festival scene and how he navigates his unique career.

Working Artists! You are not alone! Listen to these entertaining and inspirational podcast conversations with working artists.

William Kidd taught high school ceramics for 30 years while simultaneously pursuing his career as a professional artist. Bill credits his stable income with allowing him to create the work he wanted to make without the pressure of having to sell. He describes how his nature-based work has evolved to the point that the inspiration for his new work emanates from his own finished pieces. Describing himself as a humble potter, Bill Kidd says he "no longer has anything to prove to himself," and limits the proximity of his show travels to his home state of Florida. A rock star in our community and a conversation you won't want to miss.

Remember those critiques in art school, where the students would start pecking at each other at the first sign of blood in an attempt to impress the professor? We look back on those comments that, perhaps, stopped us from pursuing a particular body of work.

And, right now, all of us artists are under so much pressure! We discuss these various struggles we all find ourselves in. And what about AI? It’s here to stay so how do we wrap our brains around its impact on categories like photography and digital.

In this conversation, she describes the vulnerability of being an independent jewelry artist and the incredible support she received from the community.

Visual artists Douglas Sigwarth https://www.sigwarthglass.com/ and Will Armstrong http://www.willarmstrongart.com/ co-host and discuss topics affecting working artists. Working Artists! You are not alone! Listen to these entertaining and inspirational podcast conversations with working artists.

How are YOU handling the pressure these days? Are the struggles with road life getting in the way of your creative process? What is the right balance of studio time versus art show time for your bottom line? Are you prepared for fluctuations in buying energy due to the economy or elections? Is your baller schedule NOT so baller because the sales are off? Or are unforeseen hiccups forcing you to cancel a show that you needed to cover your bills?  Douglas and Will talk about these and other topics related to the issue of artist pressures.

Working Artists! You are not alone! Listen to these entertaining and inspirational podcast conversations with working artists.

Making a living from our artwork comes with its unique set of challenges. For art fair artists, this involves venturing out of our solitary studios and hitting the road, searching for our audience. We risk physical and financial security, and if we can't maintain a positive attitude during adversity, that dark spiral can cycle us downward and act as a barrier to connecting with collectors. This week's conversation discusses the Pacific Northwest Tour, The St. Louis Art Fair, Emerging Artist Programs, and planning for next season.

Working Artists! You are not alone! Listen to these entertaining and inspirational podcast conversations with working artists.

Cali Hobgood (https://www.photographsbycali.com/) is a traditional photographer who uses 35mm film and develops her black-and-white images in a darkroom. She finishes her work using oil paints to add color. Her imagery reflects the sensory pictures she sees in her mind's eye that depict beautiful memories from her life. These images celebrate their essential, ordinary functions yet trigger a wealth of emotional resonance from their symbolism. Cali talks about her intuitive process and recounts a story about when her work sparked controversy at an art festival that nearly threatened her safety.

Working Artists! You are not alone! Listen to these entertaining and inspirational podcast conversations with working artists.

Marina Terauds (https://www.marinaterauds.com/) has always loved to draw. When she was a child, her parents would sneak her sketchpad, and while she slept, they created drawings for her to find when she awoke. She enrolled in an arts academy in 5th grade and continued her art education, earning a master's in printmaking at The Latvian Academy of Arts. She worked as a key animator for many years before she emigrated to the United States with her husband Uldis. In this conversation, Marina describes her experiences adapting to rural life in a different country without being fluent in the language. Her nature walks became the source of inspiration, which ultimately fueled her body of work.
