Welcome to The Imposter Syndrome Files! Today, Kim is joined by Jennifer Kauffman who shares her powerful story of overcoming trauma, including surviving the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013, and how it has changed her life. As a result of these horrific events, Jennifer realized that there were pieces missing from her life that she hadn’t noticed previously. She would not wish for anyone to go through the same trauma, but she recognizes that with trauma came an opportunity to reflect more consciously on her values and goals. Stay tuned to this amazing episode to learn more about how Jennifer came to view trauma as a gift. Forgiveness leads to acceptance and power: Understanding what’s within and not within your control will help you cope with trauma and all the emotions that accompany it. Knowing that you cannot control what has already happened can be difficult to accept, but what’s more difficult is navigating current events without a sense of control over your emotions and actions. Jennifer shares that not having the drive to control everything has helped her find peace in her own mind. Taking the first step: Jennifer shares that it’s important to recognize that you don’t have to have everything figured out. Just take the first step and everything will unfold from there. It’s important to know where you want to go, but everything starts with the decision to make the journey. Jennifer also shared how she allowed her intuition to override her logical brain to free herself from physical and emotional limitations that had been holding her back. Despite her life’s many successes and accomplishments, Jennifer has always been in search of more: more peace, more love, more joy, more money, more passion, and more fulfillment. She is a bestselling author, award-winning results coach, inspirational speaker, Executive Producer of Emmy award-winning films, and trauma survivor of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. Welcome to The Impostor Syndrome Files! Join Kim Meninger and Kristy Olinger as they talk about how to master spontaneous communication. In this episode, Kristy shares how she struggled with communicating and sharing her ideas with others when she took a role in strategy. She also shares what she did to overcome that obstacle and provides strategies that worked for her so others can accelerate that learning curve. There’s a lot to unpack in this episode, so stay tuned! Soft Skills are the Hardest! Communicating clearly and professionally requires dexterity, and it is one of the essential soft skills needed in any work. But, while it is already ingrained in each individual, articulating ideas well is also one of the hardest to master, according to Kristy. The only way to get better is to practice. Kristy acknowledges that there are different approaches and that we all need to decide to decide for ourselves what works best. To some people, realizing they can build their communication skills with other people is empowering, and to some, it is a daunting task because it takes effort. Communication is a complex issue, but building confidence and learning how to navigate the conversation works. About Kristy Olinger: A 20-year career in the banking industry has taught Kristy Olinger that even the most innovative ideas are useless until you can communicate them in a way that inspires others into action. Her ability to tell the business story became the differentiator that propelled Kristy to lead the credit card product strategy of some of the country’s largest banks. For over a decade, she had been teaching these skills and mentoring individuals. Kristy teaches communication strategies that help people build relationships and expand influence so they can crush goals. She hosts a bi-weekly podcast, called The Opposite of Small Talk, for curious people interested in self-awareness and self-development. Kristy lives in Wayne, Pennsylvania, with her husband Brian and her two daughters, Mary and Bree. She is an active community member and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the Radnor Memorial Library. ~ Outline of the Episode: [01:24] Kristy’s struggle with communication and how she coped [05:20] Some steps to start solving the problem in communication [10:19] Pay attention closely – it’s all about intentionality [20:26] Spontaneous speaking can be practiced to get better at it [26:50] Know people and their perspectives to position your message well [31:04] Be your authentic self to communicate comfortably ~ More from Kristy Olinger: Website: https://www.kristyolinger.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristyolinger/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ko.communication/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC28t8dT8fafkdfUsYN9WE4g Phrase Bank: https://kristyolinger.ck.page/b13c48205e Growth Mindset Challenge; https://kristyolinger.com/growthmindset ~ Connect with Kim and The Impostor Syndrome Files: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kimmeninger/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/ExecCareer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kim.meninger

19 Apr 2022 | How to Be a Confident Introvert in an Extroverted Workplace | 00:37:07
In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we examine the challenges facing introverts in workplaces that favor extroversion. My guest, Terrance Lee, the Introvert Leader and author of Quiet Voice Fearless Leader, shares his story of embracing his introverted style. We also explore ways in which introverts can more authentically engage at work and how extroverts can better understand, support and leverage the strengths of their introverted colleagues. Terrance Lee, AKA The Introvert Leader, had always avoided taking on leadership roles in his life. At the age of 13, an experience occurred which caused him to doubt his ability to speak in front of people, and caused him to shy away from the spotlight. This worked for Terrance until he eventually had to learn leadership skills by necessity at his first engineering job out of college. When he had been working in his first role for a short time, his mentor put in his two-week notice. Terrance then found out that he had to take his place presenting to a group of experienced engineers and pilots for a highly technical review. Despite feeling extremely nervous, the meeting that Terrance led went well; which gave him a giant confidence boost. Since then, Terrance has taken on many leadership and management roles as an introvert at several Fortune 500 companies in the defense industry, with proven results. He utilizes his platform to empower introverts to tap into their own inner leadership potential and is never shy about sharing the tips that he has learned throughout his journey. In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about the human experience at work. Regardless of our roles, tenures, backgrounds, etc., at the end of the day, all any organization is a collection of humans – humans with very complex emotions, experiences and insecurities. For much of history, the expectation has been that we essentially check our humanity at the door when we enter the workplace. But what if that’s not only a flawed design that hurts humans but also one that hurts businesses? After all, your ability to achieve business results depends entirely on the well-being of your people. My guest this week, Brian McComak, founder of Hummingbird Humanity, shares his vision to bring human-centered cultures to the workplace. About My Guest Brian McComak is the CEO & Founder of Hummingbird Humanity. He is a consultant, speaker, author, and facilitator with over 25 years of experience in DEI, HR, culture, change management, internal communications, and employee experience. Before starting Hummingbird Humanity, he was the Global Head of Inclusion for Tapestry – the home of Coach, Kate Spade & Stuart Weitzman – where he developed and launched the company’s DEI strategy. He put Tapestry ‘on the map’ as a great place for inclusion, earning recognition from the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index, Women in the Workplace, and Forbes’ Best Places to Work for Diversity. Brian has also held leadership roles at leading global companies including The Walt Disney Company, L’Oreal, and Christie’s Auction House. His internal experience spans a diverse variety of industries including fashion/retail, hospitality, auction, entertainment/media and he has consulted with organizations in technology, financial services, media, and non-profit. My guest this week is Sheila Buswell, CEO of Buswell Biomedical and author of the book, “Is This Seat for Me?” Here we discuss her journey with impostor syndrome, which stems not from her work experience but from her identity as a woman, having been told throughout her life that she’s “too girly,” or not “girly enough.” Sheila and I talk about why we experience impostor syndrome in some situations and not others. We also talk about the power of authenticity and vulnerability to slowly change systems around us.

Here we talk about strategies to break free from complacency and the status quo to become the best versions of ourselves. Connect with Aaron:
19 Sep 2023 | Pushing Past the Upper Limit | 00:39:53
In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about the upper limit. Just as homeostasis keeps our bodies in a state of equilibrium, our minds tend to do this as well. Often, we set up an upper limit of what we think we’re capable of, or what we think we deserve, which becomes our own glass ceiling. My guest this week, Jill Avey, shares strategies for how we can push past this upper limit to better utilize our strengths and more confidently achieve our goals. ~

We also talk about how to share our authentic selves while protecting ourselves in the workplace. And, we talk about the importance of failure to achieving success.

24 Oct 2023 | What Our DEI Conversations Are Missing | 00:51:06
In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about how helping men to heal will help all of us to thrive. So much of the dysfunction we experience in today’s workplaces is rooted in the lack of compassion we have for ourselves, our fragile egos, and the way we perceive others as threats. This is much deeper than impostor syndrome. While we tend to focus on women’s challenges in the workplace, a giant missing piece of the puzzle is how we understand men’s experience. When men are in pain, and so many of them are, they hurt others on small or large scales. My guest this week is Sean Harvey, author of the new book Warrior Compassion, Unleashing the Healing Power of Men. Sean is an organization development consultant, an interfaith minister and much, much more. One of the things I find most fascinating about his work is the healing work he does with men in hyper-masculine systems, such as police forces and even right-wing extremist groups. Here, Sean and I discuss what our DEI conversations are missing and how compassion will lead us to far greater levels of inclusion. His work in personal, organizational, and societal transformation is inspired by twenty-five years of purpose, talent, and organization development consulting combined with having served on the faculties of Cornell, New York University, and Baruch College CUNY teaching courses in the areas of leadership, management, and organizational behavior and change. Sean is affiliated with George Washington University’s Center for Excellence in Public Leadership in Washington, D.C. As an interfaith minister, he co-founded Project Compassion, a national initiative to deepen compassion in police departments and communities. In 2021, he delivered his TEDx, “Compassion Makes the Warrior.” Sean's book, "Warrior Compassion: Unleashing the Healing Power of Men" was published in September 2023 and became an Amazon New Release Best Seller for Organizational Change and Fourth Best Seller for Men's Gender Studies. In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about the role our stories play in our confidence journeys. Here we talk about the impact of our stories and what we can do to adopt more empowered mindsets.
