29 Sep 2021Episode #230 -- Dumbo / In the Loop01:01:20

In the circus we have Dumbo and in the political circus we have dummies. The Immortals watch the 1942 Disney classic as well as one of Austin's favorite movies, 2009's In the Loop. It's not just because The Doctor swears up a storm in it, but it helps.

Note -- Something went wrong with the Chicago audio and we apologize for the lesser quality. J.C., as always, sounds great.

09 Jun 2021Episode #219 -- Little Caesar00:56:08

No Sarah this week because she got got, SEE! The rest of the Immortals review the OG gangster film, Little Caesar starring Edward G. Robinson. But is the film any good? Or watchable?

The greatest virus in an idea, according to Christopher Nolan's Inception. Then enjoy as we present you a series of ideas directly into your ear holes. We will make you believe his film is actually a dissection into filmmaking, we will make you want to go to an LCD Soundsystem concert, we will have you believe that lekvar is not available where we are, we will have you believe the Bloc Party music video is coherent and we may even convince you that The 100 was described properly. But the real question is.....when did you start listening to this show? Think about it. I know you're here now, but when did you get here?

At any given moment, one of the Immortals are pulling a long con on the other one. (For example, Austin tricked them to do a 20 year podcast.) They also listened to Johnny Cash recording an album in prison, The Drifters walking down a street and one British man's take on all of civilization. I'm sure that won't go horribly wrong. Plus more True Crime Gays and finding out what's on Pedro's Chrome tabs! Get excited!

Next episode was actually recorded recently!

Happy Spoopy! As we're in the midst of October, the Immortals watch the 1931 classic Universal adaptation of Dracula. It's the first viewing for most of the hosts. What do they think of Bela Lugosi's iconic performance? Is it scary? Is the book any good? Will Pedro tell everyone the exact day they're recording this?

While we wait to get some goddamn waffles at this jewelry store, Leigh put on some weird techno video game music, Sarah had us starve, Pedro won’t give any credit to our salesman/waiter(?) Elvis, Adam is zoning out just watching unattended babies while Austin is on the literal edge of darkness. Why won’t they even give us a menu?

That is way easier to follow than anything Pedro tries to say about LL Cool J’s rap feuds and the world of drum and beat. They also try a rye bread that may secretly be chocolate cake, which still isn’t as sweet as the lives of the Bravermans. Also Adam and Austin discover a YA book they really should have read by now. 16 Sep 2020Bonus -- Three Colors: White00:37:52

Since the middle film of the Three Colors trilogy is not on the list, The Immortals watched it anyway. Here is their thoughts on a movie Ebert described as an "anti-comedy."

Note, Sarah did not turn on her mic for the first 2.5 minutes. We kept the correction in the show because why not.

Next main episode we will be discussing the conclusion of the trilogy, Red.

05 Apr 2019Episode #151 -- Patton / Rip It Up / Beat the Clock / Knowing Me, Knowing You01:14:53

Aha! The Immortals are back and ready to go to war as we learn how many of them will follow Patton to the ends of the Earth. They also get annoyed by their song picks this week from Orange Juice and Sparks, which--fun fact--are the names of bands! They also break down the Alan Partridge classic sitcom Knowing Me Knowing You. But first they get all of their Game of Thrones predications out of the way. You'll find out who Sarah is in love with! Here's a hint, it's not Austin!

Intro / Game of Thrones talk 0:00 -- 15:10

Patton 15:10 -- 48:19

Rip It Up 48:19 -- 52:01

Beat the Clock 52:01 -- 58:44

Knowing Me, Knowing You 58:44 -- 1:09:30

We're (at) number one! We're (at) number one! Yes our random number generator has us reviewing the very first entry in all of books. This means the short film A Trip to the Moon! A Frank Sinatra album because the 1001 Albums book starts in the 50s! Opera song that we definitely didn't mess up! And The Ed Sullivan Show which is definitely available! This episode is about three times as long as the film we cover.

Intro 02:40-20:38
A Trip to the Moon 02:40- 20:38
In the Wee Hours of the Morning 20:38-27:13

20 Sep 2018Episode #129 -- The Ox-Bow Incident / Kick Out the Jams / Frisee / The Mary Tyler Moore Show00:58:45

Sarah loves westerns! And The Ox-Bow Incident is definitely a western. It follows Henry Fonda and his familiar faced friend as they take on a moral problem. They also listen to DNC's own MC5, ignore some frisee and take in the delights of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Also, did Austin and Sarah actually finish Parenthood?!? Don't look at the timestamp if you want to be surprised!

The Ox-Bow Incident 6:10 -- 23:14

Who's that over there? Is that Veronique? Or Weronika? There lies the complexity of the film The Double Life of Veronique. The Immortals dive into the films beauty and confusion while leaving plenty of time to continue that artistic relaxation to The Cardigans. Then it's time to get more emotional with 2Pac's tribute to his mother. Then it's time to get way less emotional with a deep dive into the first season of CW's The Vampire Diaries. Get excited!

16 Mar 2017Episode #68 -- Being John Malkovich / Bright Flight / Gulac / Slob / Listen to My Heart / Call the Midwife01:07:30

Even though the portal that formed in the sword wound in Adam's chest that they went through last week closed behind them and they've been trapped in a room without food in another dimension with no clue how to get out, The Immortals still have INTERNET! The movie this week is Being John Malkovich, which proves to be only a slightly weirder scenario than the one the Immortals currently find themselves in. Leigh hates another album that Austin and Adam like, while they all mourn the fact that they'll never again talk about Weezer after this episode. The food and children's book were unobtainable and unreadable, and Austin once again finds himself underwhelmed by a beloved British TV show. Will the Immortals ever escape this dimension? Will they ever do a normal show with no weird stuff? Will Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich? Probably not!

Intro 0:00 – 4:01

02 Jun 2016Episode #29 -- Magnolia / Is This It? / Vatrushka / Heartbeats / There Will Be Wolves / The Paradise01:56:30

The Immortals return and that includes Adam from his week of interdimensional kidnapping! Once they settle down from his adventure, they get into the insightful (or pretentious?) Paul Thomas Anderson film, Magnolia. (They do note when they start talking about spoilers.) They learn whether The Strokes hold up 10 years later, whether Vatrushka is a pastry or a roll, whether Pedro can focus on The Knife’s version of Heartbeats, whether a children’s book can be more upsetting than one about The Crusades and then it’s time for THE PARADISE. Get excited!

15 Nov 2020Episode #200 -- Seven Samurai / Malcolm X01:56:15

Whoa! We actually made it to 200! While we ignore the fact we still have 801 more episodes to go, we enjoy watching two of the greatest films ever: Seven Samurai and Sarah's bonus pick of Malcolm X. Also, Austin and Sarah went to the Music Box.

Tell a friend about the show! Why not!

26 Jul 2019Episode #165 -- Scorpio Rising / Live and Dangerous / Marcus Garvey / Red Dwarf00:57:33

They're back! After a week off, The Immortals had plenty of time to watch a 28 minute Kenneth Anger short film. They eventually get to that after breaking down the Emmy nominations. Then they can get to Thin Lizzy's legacy, Burning Spear's cultural context and the sci-fi silliness of Red Dwarf. Get excited!

28 Jan 2020Bonus -- January 202000:37:44

Everyone's favorite episode in a serialized drama is when they stop the story and just fill in plot holes. Good, here's a bonus episode where everyone gives henge ratings to stuff they've missed. Thankfully, nobody hints at when this was recorded by commenting in real time a major event in American history. They also talk about Ghost Rider.

18 Jan 2018Episode #106 -- Throne of Blood / Autobahn / Tilister / The Man Who Sold the World / Brideshead Revisited00:46:48

Double, double toil and trouble. Fire burn and cauldron bubble. That was the creepy repeated phrase of the witches in William Shakespeare's Macbeth. Throne of Blood is an adaptation of the Bard's tragic tale except instead of witches, it's a weird dude in the forest. Also there are samurais. It's awesome. Also we have the album Autobahn, David Bowie, and another beloved British miniseries. Beware the Scottish play!

28 Sep 2017BONUS EPISODE00:30:00

The Immortals are taking it easy this week so they're just going to chat sorta on topic for a half hour. Sarah tells us what she thought of The Battle of Algiers. Pedro catches up with Return of the Jedi. Adam reviews The Snow Spider for the second time. And Austin wastes everyone's time by trying to recap like twenty shows. IT'S PERFECT AUDIO. Normal episode next week.

Today they are diving into one of the most beloved rockumentaries, Gimme Shelter, covering a memorable tour by The Rolling Stones. Then they have Iron Maiden screaming to Satan, a music video so good it seems like a short film and then they end with....Sliders. Which does technically have a musician as one of the leads. 29 Sep 2016Episode #46 -- The Asphalt Jungle / Tago Mago / Peruvian Purple Potatoes / Electricity / Charlotte's Web / Barney Miller01:31:17

The Immortals haven’t had a worst episode ever in awhile so we gotta give the fans what they want! Almost all of them go deep into The Asphalt Jungle and even fewer will come out alive. They also are perplexed by the sound of Tago Mago, the size of the potatoes, the backstory of Captain Beefheart, the miracles of Charlotte’s Web, and the age of Abe Vigoda. Also stay tuned to see if Austin releases the episode or not! They definitely nailed this.

14 Jan 2022Episode #236 -- Limite00:39:32

In an episode that was clearly recorded last fall, Sarah, Austin and Pedro get into what the fans have been demanding. A long lost Brazilian short film! Turns out, it's actually really interesting but also quite distancing. The downloads for this episode are going to be insane.

31 Mar 2016Episode #20 -- Closely Watched Trains / The King of Kong / Crocodiles / Arbroath Smokie / Marquee Moon / Worzel Gummidge / The Real World01:45:46

The Immortals return from their never-explained one-week break! They review two films this week with Sarah’s bonus review taking us to the intense world of competitive arcade players and our regular review takes us to the not-as-exciting-as-you-may-think world of train dispatching during World War II. They also make amends by finally reviewing the smoked fish, get déjà vu with the album, talk about all the facets of a ten-minute song and meet a magical scarecrow. Also Austin watched eight seasons of The Real World and has plenty to say about it! Get excited.

18 Aug 2016Episode #40 -- Cries and Whispers / Private Dancer / Mississippi Alligator / Love Will Tear Us Apart / The Incredible Journey / Buffy the Vampire Slayer01:46:20

The Immortals have hit 40 episodes and they’re equally as shocked! It’s Pedro’s time for a bonus episode which mean there will be an extra amount of gleeful energy. That will be needed because they’re reviewing the very depressing Cries and Whispers. Also they listen to Tina Turner, eat a gosh darned alligator, get torn apart by love, remember the Homeward Bound movie and discuss a whole lot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Get excited!

04 Mar 2022Episode #241 -- The Palm Beach Story00:47:31

Keep an eye on the pitcher because we got a screwball this week! The gang watches the delightful Preston Strurges comedy, The Palm Beach Story.

16 Aug 2019Episode #168 -- Aguirre, the Wrath of God / Purple Rain / Let My Love Open the Door / Jonathan Creek01:14:47

The Immortals are nothing but method podcasters. They recorded this a bit too late into the evening which puts them in the right mindset to go down the Amazon with Werner Herzog as conquistadors look for El Dorado in Aguirre, the Wrath of God. They go into ALL of their favorite Herzog stories and occasionally mention why the movie is good. They also dive into the classic Prince album, Purple Rain. 29 Jun 2017Episode #82 -- All the President's Men / Scum / Jamon Iberico / Rock of Ages / Granny / Smallville01:20:23

The Immortals struggle to find any sort of modern comparison to this week's film, All the President's Men. The album was easy because everyone in 2017 loves to listen to something that is "barely music", or eat food that is barely getable or a listen to a song that is now randomly a cheesy movie or a read book that's in German or watch a show that is even less liked than Man of Steel? We're just too mainstream. Also listen to the end where Pedro invents a new improv rule called "Yes, So?"!

Intro 0:00 -- 4:24

All the President's Men 4:24 -- 32:45

Scum 32:45 -- 42:58

Jamon Iberico 42:38 -- 44:31

Rock of Ages 44:31 -- 51:28

Granny 51:28 -- 52:30

Smallville 52:30 -- 1:11:25

12 Apr 2018Episode #116 -- Platoon / Fuzzy / Shanxi Extra Aged Vinegar / 1952 Vincent Black Lightning / Time Trumpet00:42:10
War is hell. War film are sometimes also hell, but a considerably lesser hell. Let's get this straight: war = hell; war films = heck. And oh boy is Platoon one heck of a film. Oliver Stone's semi-autobiographical tale of men in Vietnam is filled with impressive actors and maybe less than impressive direction. Also the gang listens to some Fuzzy, ignore some vinegar, find out that a motorcycle is pretty cool and watch an I Love the 90s parody from the creator of Veep. Get excited, it's a short one this week!

Intro: 0:00- 2:05
Platoon: 2:05- 19:41
Fuzzy: 19:41- 24:04
Shanxi Extra Aged Vinegar:24:04-24:28
1952 Vincent Black Lightning: 24:28- 30:48

The Immortals return for their last catch-up bonus episode! Pedro is here to confusingly guide us through some sort of weird French song that is definitely not French, the richness of early hip-hop and one of the stranger Beatles songs ever recorded. At least that’s what Don Draper thinks. Get excited.

25 Oct 2018Episode #132 -- Doctor Zhivago / Ambient 1: Music for the Airport / (Don't Fear) the Reaper / Quantum Leap01:26:06

Get your coat we're going on a train ride! That's the tone of this movie right? The gang are following the epic tale of Doctor Zhivago through different Russian revolutions. After that tension, they calm down with the soothing sounds of Brian Eno and then all the tension returned as they argued about the title of (Don't Fear) the Reaper. Then much like Sam, Austin leaped alone. Stay tuned to hear J.C. try to quit the show!

25 Jan 2018Episode #107 -- The Seventh Seal / Queen II / Tomme de Savoie / Maybe I'm Amazed / Only Fools and Horses00:59:33

The last time we saw Ingmar "Chuckles" Bergman, it was Cries and Whispers and Austin called it one of the most upsetting movies ever made. What does he think of The Seventh Seal which literally has Death following good people until he can take them away? (He loves it.) It's also time for a fantasy battle of musical proportions with Queen, the sweet/cheesy sounds of Paul McCartney and somehow the most popular British sitcom of all time. GET EXCITED. Oh and there's a weird puzzle to hold you over while we take a week off. Solve it!

Intro 0:00 -- 1:37

The Seventh Seal  1:37 -- 28:38

Enjoy the emotional whiplash.

When Don Draper saw Planet of the Apes, he stayed in the theatre with his son and watched it again. Were Austin, Pedro or Sarah compelled to do the same? Or watch one of the eight other Apes films? They also listened to some British reggae by UB40. Austin watched yet another stupid show--this time with Chuck Norris. But more importantly, Pedro has another excuse to talk about BAT OUT OF HELL!

Whoa, we're back! Here's a long episode that was definitely not recorded back in December. Ignore these old references as we get back on a regular schedule. Anywho, we talked about Gangs of New York! Can you imagine a Martin Scorsese movie that's over three hours, being nominated for a ton of Oscars and winning none of them? They also listen to a beloved Beck album and a classic Modest Mouse song. Also, the Immortals finally did it. They spent an hour just talking about Hannibal.
