Serafina Costanza is a Davis, CA born/LA-based comedian who you can see performing regularly at Westside Comedy Theater in Santa Monica and all up and down the California coast. She also produces The Shack Show, second Wednesday of every month at The Shack in Playa Del Vista.I've done the show twice. Not only is it fun, but The Shack has a damned good burger! Liam McEneaney is a stand-up comedian and filmmaker whose career's roots can be traced back to 1997. He dropped out of college to work the road and his career saw highs in 2001 when he appeared on Comedy Central's Premium Blend. I kinda remember it, but what I do remember is it was pretty popular. Since then, my friend Liam has appeared on Sirius XM (not sure if you subscribe to it) and WTF with Marc Maron (might need to pay for premium cause it's an old episode). He's done other TV stuff but I don't remember what. Today, Liam is a filmmaker who got accepted to the prestigious USC School of Cinematic Arts here in LA. We talk a lot about that. Jay Light is a comedian and television writer originally hailing from the fine city of Dallas. He has written for a long list of TV shows. You can see Jay perform all over the country, including regularly at The World-Famous Hollywood Improv. He also hosts WRONG! A Dark Comedy Game Show which you can see in a city near you! A lot was discussed in this episode. Normally when I go into producing these, I have a vague idea of where it could go. This conversation pivoted quickly into a passionate discussion was Jay Light’s argument to as why both comedians and industry would benefit from having a stand-up comedy union (a conversation I did not expect to have but boy am I glad we did!). We discuss how wages for features and headliners have remained the same literally since 1979 not adjusting for inflation one bit, how normalized it is for producers in LA to not pay comedians for ticketed shows with item minimums, the power of collective bargaining, the disappearing stand-up comedy middle class, a fairly recent and successful strike to get wages increased for club performers and emcees in New York City, and a lot more on the matter. I record these episodes on average a month before they are released, and let me tell you, they have shapped every discussion I've had with comedians going forward. Believe it or not, many of my peers have felt similar frustrations. That being said, Jay Light is smart, opinionated, fearless, and frankly, one of the most punk rock people I know in comedy. He is also an artist by every definition of the term and I've enjoyed watching him develop from when we first met. (which incidentally, I met him when he hosted a Potluck when he was a door guy at The World-Famous Comedy Store once-upon-a-time ago and we talk about that too!) We also talk about the power of taking risks industry are reluctant to take on creatives, the importance of giving back, the power of community, what community did for the Roast Battle, really why comics should always be writing and how so many have no idea how to write jokes yet, the difference between art and commerce in the social media era, and so much more! Nick Wevurski is a Vermont-based comedian, producer at Woolen Mill Comedy Club in Bridgewater and produces Vermont Comedy Festival. The festival kicks off this Thursday 11/30 and will be headlined by Colin Quinn. My friendship with Nick dates back to 2016 when he was doing comedy in Los Angeles. Navigating the scene, we quickly became best friends; slingin' jokes and gettin' rowdy at places like Fanatic Salon and Cinema Bar every week. During the pandemic, Nick moved back to Vermont. Despite 2,900 miles between us, me and Nick still talk on the phone two to three times a week. Joel Madison is a veteran TV writer and WGA member whose resume is a mile long; having written for Roseanne, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The Jackie Thomas Show, Undeclared, as well as having created Malcom & Eddie. In addition to all of this, he also was a working road comedian hailing from the great city of Minneapolis (home of jucy lucys and the almighty Dillinger Four). Upon moving to LA, he was a door guy at the La Jolla Comedy Store and eventually he became a paid regular at The World-Famous Hollywood Improv, passed by the late Budd Friedman himself. Hailing from Queens, NY, Liam McEneaney is a comedian, producer and filmmaker nearly 30 years on the road. Having been on the road for many years, he has achieved notoriety on SiriusXM, WTF with Marc Maron, Showtime, HBO, as well as the hit show Premium Blend on Comedy Central. Great set, Liam! This was the first episode with multiple guests since going multi-cam. Minus a few unrelated technical difficulties, it came out well and honestly, was one of the most fun episodes of The Ian Ira Rousso Show to date! After Liam airs his grevences with me and Gary Cannon, we get into what it was like working for the sixth and final season of Fresh Prince as Will Smith was becoming a megastar, what it was like developing in Minneapolis along side the late Louie Anderson, the important role of SiriuXM in saving the stand-up comedy middleclass, helping me with my apperence on stage, as well as workshoping a one-liner that has since gone on to get a 15-second laugh break in the Belly Room of the World-Famous Comedy Store, and so much more. This is the longest episode of The Ian Ira Rousso Show in a very long time, we covered so much, and I am wildly appreciative for having them on. This was a fun one! Kim McVicar is a Canadian-born stand-up comedian who you can literally see all over America right now. You can see her at The World-Famous Hollywood Improv on Melrose as well as Levity clubs around the southwest. This episode was recorded on what was the first warm day of the year in LA. Because of it, the cameras kept overheating. At one point, I attempted to correct everything by unplugging the power strip. That ended up erasing the first 20 minutes of the episode (lol). The good news is, though YouTube tutorials, I figured out how to keep this from happening going forward. That isn't to say this episode didn't suffer. This is a relatively quick, mostly audio-only episode. It's a fun one, definitely was frustrated the whole time cause this was the first episode with the multi-cam setup that crapped out on me like this. Most of it was pretty playful. In the month since recording this episode, a crazier story unfolded that ultimately resulting in him discontinuing virtually all operations at Def Noodles Comedy Club. Justin Conigliaro is a singer, writer and lead guitarist of Brooklyn-based punk rock outfit Up For Nothing. Founded in 2001 in the days of The Temple in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn DIY staple, Up For Nothing has gone on to tour all over the United States releasing 5 albums including the band’s most recent “Escape Route”, released through San Diego, It’s Alive Records. I’ve known Justin longer than almost anybody I’ve had the privilege to call friend. It started with my high school ska band playing with them at Arlene’s Grocery, and our friendship has transcended many eras of our lives; nights that include seeing countless bands, long van rides to other states, excursions to The Fest in Gainesville, FL, and more times seeing The Bouncing Souls than I could ever try to count. I still have the ticket stub somewhere of the time I got to see them open for Sum 41 at Union Square institution, Irving Plaza. We talk movies, music, New York sports, the unhealthy side of nostalgia, and just a million things. On episode 27 of The Ian Ira Rousso Show, I spoke to comedian and author, Lue Deck, who I met at a storytelling show in January. I read about some of Lue’s experiences in William Knoedelseder’s “I'm Dying Up Here”, a book whose accounts became the inspiration of the Showtime series of the same name. Some of these stories left me in absolute awe so when I finished, I invited Lue to be on the podcast. In the early-1970’s, Lue quit law to pursue comedy in Houston before moving to Los Angeles where he found work at The World-Famous Comedy Store both on Sunset and in Westwood. Dubbed one of Mitzi’s Boys, Lue would work with soon-to-be household names, originated The Comedy Channel and eventually becoming the club’s archivist, as well as the head of security. The camaraderie of the young club was put to the test in 1979 when much of the club’s talent would go on strike; an issue that has caused contention even 45 years later. Lue talks about his experience working The Comedy Store during the strike, as well as some of the remaining tension with a then soon-to-be Tonight Show even today. Over the course of a career most new to this business would only dream of (including myself), Lue has performed stand-up comedy all over the WORLD. He recalls fondly of getting to perform in North and South Korea literally AT THE SAME TIME, performing for Apple, Microsoft and NASA, as well as a story of performing for the president of The Philippines; a story that he says resulted in the best thing that’s ever happened as the result of being a comedian. When you have a career that long, you might have some wisdom to dispense. Lue’s is to learn to say “thank you” in as many languages as you can. For him, it’s literally 40! I know TWO! That, and it all starts with a smile! Lue has performed thousands and thousands of shows; clubs, USO tours. He was featured in “I Am Sam Kinison” and even had the honor of being nominated for a Peabody award. He has a book out now called Stand-Up Decoded. This was one of those episodes where I tried listening far more than I did talking. Did I knock it out of the park? Absolutely not! However, I am absolutely grateful for the opportunity.
