04 Sep 2019Stephen King Movie Battle Royale, Unappreciated Television Supporting Characters, And TV Crossovers We Need | The Best of HO 2019 Vol. 201:51:29

As we take the week off, here are three of our most popular topics from earlier this year: Television's most unappreciated supporting characters, our Stephen King Movie Battle Royale, and TV crossovers we need.

First up, from Episode 351: We discuss the most unappreciated supporting characters on television, as well as what unappreciated even means to us. From shows like Fringe, Sons of Anarchy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and many others, we debate why we love these respective characters and the actors who portray them, as well as why we think audiences never quite appreciated them.

Next, we head to Episode 347: We take a look at the movie adaptations of arguably the greatest horror author in history, Stephen King. For several decades now, both readers and audiences have been terrified by the works of Stephen King, in all forms of entertainment. As with anything, not all of his adaptations click, and occasionally the results are scarier than the source material. But those that do, have become classic films that have horrified generations. Because we love King, we left it to our listeners to decide the final eight films with which we’d handle our latest Movie Battle Royale, and the nominees are all great in their own way: Pet Sematary, The Mist, Misery, Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Stand By Me, IT (2017), The Shining. But which of them is the greatest Stephen King adaptation of them all? Find out on our Movie Battle Royale!

Finally, we head to Episode 346: We take a look at that weirdly connective phenomena which is known as the “TV crossover”. Networks have utilized these for years as examples as to how to sell their television shows to people who might not be watching them: Mulder and Scully went to COPS, Angela Lansbury headed to Magnum P.I., and the CW combines an entire DC universe once a year. These events can often be nothing more than publicity stunts, but often times they create something beautiful. And we’re going to throw our two cents in the mix, crossing over TV shows to create several brand new properties! Oh, we have some ideas.

20 Dec 2021Spider-Man: No Way Home Spoiler Review01:32:14

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we discuss every single aspect - spoilers and all - of the biggest movie of the entire year, Spider-Man: No Way Home

Tom Holland returns for the conclusion of his trilogy which began with Spider-Man: Homecoming as director Jon Watts pulls out all of the stops. Peter Parker's choices, returning villains, navigating potential franchise missteps, the strange choices of Doctor Strange, stellar surprise casting, and enough heart-filled Marvel nostalgia to power a DeLorean. Nothing is out of bounds on our latest spoilercast.

Following the events of Far from Home, where Mysterio outed Peter’s true identity on his deathbed, his life is becoming straight-up chaos. His identity upends everyone’s life that he cares about: Aunt May, Ned, MJ, Happy. Peter (Tom Holland) gets the questionable idea of reaching out to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and asking him to throw down a little spell that forces the world to just forget about ole Spidey’s identity and needless to say, things do NOT go as planned. Marvel’s Multiverse opens up, and fan service takes a collect call direct from Kevin Feige’s cinematic prison. Also, the true Peter Parker finally emerges.

09 May 2018The Evolution of Television Families | Ep 31101:37:42

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are both here, so what better time to discuss the evolution of television families?

We all remember watching various families on our favorite TV shows, but why did we connect with some over others? What was it about this obviously fictional yet familial bond that, often times, felt more real than our own?

This week, we discuss how our beloved TV families have evolved over the years, from safe sitcom messages of the moment, to modern-day issues where it seems every family has a criminal mastermind behind it.

Also this week: Movie trailers and their lies, why do we still care about box office records, reviews of Tully and Anon, and much more.

14 Aug 2024Why Movie Adaptations Are So Difficult To Pull Off and D2301:37:26

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, with recent movie adaptations - such as Borderlands and It Ends with Us - struggling to resonate with fans in terms of the changes they've made, we decided to break this whole process down. Why are movie adaptations so difficult to pull off? Why does it seem so impossible to bring together what both fans and casual cinephiles want and create something everyone can enjoy? Our topic this week breaks down this very concept.

Also this week: Disney's D23 event (their own personal Comic-Con) was recently held and tons of news released that we need to discuss including new Pixar releases, reviews of Borderlands and Skincare, and much more!

02 May 2018Building A Marvel Cinematic Universe and Avengers: Infinity War | Ep 31002:15:28

With the largest opening in history, everyone is talking about Avengers: Infinity War. So we thought, as we celebrate 10 years in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, let’s go back to the beginning and look at how we got here.

This week, we discuss all of the films BEFORE Infinity War. We begin with Iron Man, and how Marvel gambled on a risky talent by the name of Robert Downey, Jr. While he is beloved worldwide for his portrayal of Tony Stark, as well as many other projects, he was very much an actor studios were leery of. By staking the entirety of their future on him, they hedged what turned out to be one of the greatest bets in cinematic history.

From here we move on to discuss everything else Marvel has attempted to do in the past 10 years. From their struggles – recasting Bruce Banner and War Machine – to their insane successes (what’s a Guardian of the Galaxy again?), we tackle it all on this extra-Marvelous episode that any film fan won’t want to miss.

AFTER this discussion, we take off the Spoiler Gauntlet and jump into Avengers: Infinity War! What we loved, what we loathed, favorite moments, personal experiences, and especially: what we thought of that ending! There is a lot to talk about this week, so take a listen.

Movie marketing has changed exponentially over the last decade or two. 24 Jun 2017Interview with Director Harris Doran | Beauty Mark00:26:42

In Beauty Mark, Angie is a woman marked by the cruel twists of life. A single mother with a limited education and a long history of bad decisions, Angie struggles to find the right path for her son. Adding to this dilemma is her live-in mother,  a boorish woman with her own track record of irresponsibility. Upon learning that their home is being condemned, Angie sets off on a desperate mission to find a suitable place to live before her family is cast out into the street. When every corner leads to rejection, she fixates her sights on settling the debt with the one person she feels owes her: the man who sexually abused her as a child.

Beauty Mark is an honest depiction of the toll sexual abuse can have on personal judgment. It delivers a protagonist whose plight might seem detestable to some, yet through the raw and unflinching performance of Auden Thornton as Angie, we witness a character whose pain and plight begins to resonate with each of us. Complemented by remarkable supporting performances from Catherine Curtin and Jeff Kober, Beauty Mark is a tragically beautiful tale of the damaged hearts left in the wake of abuse.

For this exclusive interview, writer-director Harris Doran discusses both his journey to Hollywood, as well as the road to Beauty Mark. He elaborates on why the topic of sexual abuse and the need to craft a narrative that spoke a brutal truth was so important in the making of his film. And why Auden Thornton was the perfect choice to bring his powerful tale to light.

A haunting story centered around an uncomfortable topic and filled with memorable performances, don’t miss our exclusive interview with Beauty Mark director, Harris Doran.

Currently playing at the LA Film Festival, you can find more info about Beauty Mark on Facebook or Twitter

29 Nov 2022Murder Mysteries, Marvel Movie Stars, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and Netflix's Wednesday01:41:30

In recent years, directors Rian Johnson and Kenneth Branagh have revived the murder mystery format in a huge way with their respective franchises beginning with Knives Out and Murder on the Orient Express, respectively. We have discussed how much we all love murder mysteries on the podcast, but WHY do we love them so much? What is it about these puzzle games of murder that drive audiences back for repeat viewings, long after they have already deduced who the culprit is? We'll find out this week as our topic is what makes for a great murder mystery?

Also on this week's show, we have spoiler-free reviews of Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Adams in Tim Burton's foray into television with Wednesday, plus Rian Johnson's return to the Knives Out franchise with Glass Onion. Furthermore, Quentin Tarantino has been getting a lot of press recently for his comments stating that Marvel actors are not movie stars, but is there truth in his statements? We discuss, and at the end of the podcast, revisit an earlier conversation we had on the end of the movie star era as a whole.

Don’t you love it when you are watching your favorite television show, and your favorite character gets him or herself into a predicament that you just know they will wiggle themselves out of…and then they DIE?!

Oh, we’ve all been there. The RAGE that seeps through your pores, the visceral reaction to the fact that a character you have spent tens of hours becoming attached to has just been forever ripped away from your heart.

Is it fair? Is it right? Most importantly, is television getting carried away with it?

This is our topic this week as we discuss TV’s recent obsession with constantly knocking off beloved characters. Not only are they killing too many, a bunch of them KEEP COMING BACK!

12 Jul 2022Changing the Tone in Movies or TV and Thor: Love and Thunder01:26:02

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, with Thor: Love and Thunder blowing up theaters, we decided to take a look at movies or TV that changed their tone. For example, a show like The X-Files regularly altered its tone from comedy to sci-fi to horror with relative ease, while movies rebooted into completely new genres with films like 21 Jump Street and Baywatch. Changing the tone of a property is nothing new, but it does beg the question: is it worth the risk?

24 Dec 2018Aquaman, Mary Poppins Returns, and Bumblebee Spoilercast Special01:42:36

The year is ending with a bang, as Aquaman, Mary Poppins Returns, and Bumblebee all hit theaters for the holiday season. One, an enormously charismatic hero with the ability to communicate on a deeper level with every living being while simultaneously saving lives. The other two, Aquaman and Bumblebee. On this special episode, we explore each of these three behemoths and their respective plots and details.

First up, we trip a light fantastic as we sashay into Mary Poppins Returns! Emily Blunt picks up the umbrella and returns to theaters just in time to put that stoic narcissism and delightful penchant for a song to the test and save the Banks family from certain ruin. Joined by Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda, Blunt grasps ahold of Mary Poppins and makes it her own, but does it live up to the original? Poppins, music, insanity, and family - we explore a world of imagination as Aaron and Amanda discuss Mary Poppins Returns.

Next, Bumblebee. Set in 1987, Hailee Steinfeld stars as Charlie, a young girl who has recently lost her father and her inner light. She’s a mechanic like her dad, and she’s desperate to repair her father's car when frustration leads her to an old bug. Which happens to be Bumblebee after his unfortunate voice incident. The two become fast friends before having to fend off both an irrational government, and a pair of rowdy Decepticons dead-set on information Bumblebee has on Optimus Prime.

Lastly, we dive into DC's latest hero, Aquaman. Born a son to an underwater Queen (Nicole Kidman) and a human, Arthur Curry learns he is destined to rule the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. Along the way, he must challenge his brother Orm, and fend off the villainous Manta. For this section, Aaron is joined by John Davenport and Brian Williams to debate Arthur Curry's journey towards his rightful place as King, Jason Momoa's entry into the DC Universe, Amber Heard's hair, Patrick Wilson's flair, and James Wan's direction.

14 Dec 2016The 3rd Annual Holiday Special and Christmas Movie Battle Royale02:37:47

Every year, we love to celebrate the holiday season with our listeners, and there is no better way to do that then with our 3rd Annual Holiday Special!

It all started with a random idea, as Aaron and Scott were big fans of holiday specials, and podcasts seemed to skip over the idea completely. We decided we can do whatever we want here at The Hollywood Outsider, so let’s create our own tradition and the annual special was born.

Every year we do a little something different, and this year we are incorporating one of our most popular topics – The Movie Battle Royale! We’ve all debated what IS a Christmas movie and what is not, but what is - ultimately - the GREATEST CHRISTMAS MOVIE EVERY MADE? By the end of this episode, with a little help from our special guest Amy, it will finally be decided.

That’s not all, oh no. After our debate, the Christmas joy kicks in as we get a little personal and share our personal memories of the holiday season. Favorite movies, TV specials, moments, and even desserts – everything is covered this year!

With a special opening from John, a little whimsy from Aaron, and of course the annual Christmas Poem from Scott – This is the one podcast you don’t want to miss this holiday season!

14 Aug 2017Interview with Screenwriter, Producer and Actor Leah McKendrick | M.F.A. 01:06:39

M.F.A. follows Francesca Eastwood’s Noelle, a shy college art student. Attending a campus party, Noelle is raped by a suitor and her life is irrevocably altered. Finding no solace within the school or her friends, she confronts her attacker with tragic results. Noelle is horrified, yet there is something of a tangible relief in knowing that justice has effectively been served. As she summons an emerging strength within, Noelle follows a new path as an avenger of sorts. A vigilante who can punish those who have so casually destroyed lives like hers, all while a detective (Clifton Collins Jr.) nips at her heels.

M.F.A. is screenwriter and producer Leah McKendrick's first feature film, as she continues her quest to build her resume with personal projects. For this exclusive interview, Aaron sits down with Leah to discuss her path to Hollywood as an actress, struggles within the industry, and creating her own opportunities in Hollywood. The conversation then turns to M.F.A. and why this film was such a personal story for Leah, the journey to get the film made, and what she hopes her thoughtful revenge story can accomplish on the topic of rape and sexual assault debates.

You can find more on Leah and her work at LeahMcKendrick.com and the film itself at MFAMovie.com. Look for the film to release this October.

09 Jun 2015Ep 191 | Movie Trailer Lies!01:54:02

Why do movie trailers lie to us?

We recently discussed marketing in today’s films. As that was a very wide-ranging conversation, one of our listeners – John - asked us to elaborate on movie trailers themselves. Specifically, those trailers that painted an awful film as brilliance or made a great film look like hot, sticky garbage. As we discuss movie trailers and the lies they tell, we also focus on those trailers that duped us personally. Join in on the discussion and listen to the latest episode of The Hollywood Outsider.

22 Aug 2017The Worst Advice In Movies And Television | Ep 28301:52:27

We have all been victims of bad advice from time to time, but movies and television are supposed to be where advice gets it right. They have time, money, and talent to toss out some of the greatest life-changing mantras in history, and we have come to expect greatness.

Unfortunately, that’s simply not the way entertainment works. So this week, we are taking a look at the worst advice in the film and television. Perhaps it was a little nugget of insight that was simply misguided, or maybe it was completely moronic. Regardless, these are the vocal tidbits that caused us to slam our heads against the screen in disbelief.

Also on this week’s podcast: Game of Thrones and HBO need to plug a leak, AMC wants to take on MoviePass, Deadpool 2 loses a stunt person, the New York Post questions if millennials appreciate classics, reviews of The Hitman’s Bodyguard, Logan Luck, Wind River, and much more!

27 Feb 2019The Oscars Movie Battle Royale: Best Picture 2000s Edition02:04:04

For our first Movie Battle Royale of 2019, we decided to climb aboard the Oscar train and look at some of the Best Picture winners of decades past. If you took a single decade, and looked at all 10 winners, which film would stand the test of time to be crowned the greatest film of that respective decade?

So this week, we’re discussing the Best Picture winners of the 2000s. A decade ripe with classics, but only 10 verified winners of The Academy Award’s top prize. Previous guest Scott Calgaro joins us to debate and decide on which one film rises above the others to win the title of the Best Picture of the aughts! ! Will it be Gladiator, Slumdog Millionaire, The Hurt Locker, Crash, Chicago, A Beautiful Mind, Million Dollar Baby, No Country for Old Men, Gladiator, The Departed, or Lord of the Rings: Return of the King? You’re about to find out.

Also this week: Rotten Tomatoes comes to their senses with audience scores; A Quiet Place 2, Escape Room 2, and The Haunting of Hill House Season 2(now known as The Haunting of Bly Manor) are all happening; and we discuss our reactions to this year's Oscar ceremony. 11 Dec 2017Interview with Director Paul McGuigan and Author Peter Turner | Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool00:43:31

Over 30 years ago, Peter Turner published a memoir on his relationship with screen icon, Gloria Grahame, titled "Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool". Unlike most celebrity tales, this was not one rife with scandal or despair. This was a story about love, regret, and kinship. Over 30 years later, Peter's story has finally arrived on the silver screen.

Annette Bening stars as Gloria Grahame, an aging acting icon who learns she is ailing. Rather than suffering alone, she calls on her former love, Peter (Jamie Bell), and requests to stay with him and his family. After taking her in, Peter begins to reflect upon the love they had before, pondering where it all went wrong. And more importantly, where do Gloria and Peter go from here?

For this exclusive interview, Aaron sits down with the director of "Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool", Paul McGuigan. He discusses a myriad of topics including why this story felt like one he needed to tell, working with Annette Bening and Jamie Bell, and what it was like having the inspiration for the story readily available. Also, Aaron talks with Peter Turner himself, to get behind the movie magic and discover the love behind the story, and what it is like seeing your own life on the screen.

Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool releases on 12/29 in LA and NY, and the film itself is a beautiful celebration of life and love. And to compliment this tale, enjoy these two interviews with the wonderfully engaging talents of Paul McGuigan and Peter Turner.

13 Oct 2021James Bond Battle Royale and No Time To Die Spoilercast02:02:11

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we have devoted our entire show to one man: Bond, James Bond. From Dr. No through No Time To Die, we debate who of the original James Bonds has worn the tux the best. We discuss each iteration of this classic character in detail, as well as our appreciation for what each of them brought to the role.

But we are not stopping there! Our Movie Battle Royale returns as we whittle down 8 wonderful choices for the role of James Bond to determine who should be the next 007! Maybe Idris Elba or Richard Madden? Perhaps Tom Hardy or James McAvoy? You'll have to listen to find out who is ultimately determined to be the next great James Bond!

As we wrap-up our show, we finally dive into Daniel Craig's last foray as the greatest spy to ever live in No Time To Die. There is much to discuss on his latest film, and we can't wait to share our thoughts on Craig's concluding chapter.

05 Dec 2019The 2019 Holiday Special | A Hollywood Outsider Christmas01:13:42

It's the 2019 HOliday Podcast Special!

Every year, we love to celebrate the holiday season with our listeners, and there is no better way to do that than with our 6th Annual Holiday Special!

It all started with a random idea, as Aaron and Scott were big fans of holiday specials, yet podcasts seemed to skip over the idea completely. Therefore, we decided we can do whatever we want here at The Hollywood Outsider, so let’s create our own tradition and the Annual Holiday Special was born!

Every year we do a little something different, so this year we're taking our Movie Battle Royale and sprinkling some Christmas magic on it for a Santa Battle Royale. That's right, who will survive as the best Saint Nick to EVER grace our screens? Only one way to find out.

That’s not all, oh no. We also talk about our standards on when decorating can begin, the best holiday movie of the last decade, and the best holiday TV episode of the last decade. The Christmas spirit kicks into overdrive as we open up and share our personal memories of the holiday season, stories that remind us of Christmas. And no holiday special would be complete without a visit from the big man himself, so get ready as Santa Claus drops by the studio to tell us just how wrong (or right) we are all throughout the episode!

With a special game from Amanda, Santa in his sleigh, Scott’s annual Christmas Poem, and a lot of fun for everyone – This is the one podcast you don’t want to miss this holiday season!

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we decided it was time to get a bit controversial and weigh in on a few of our unpopular opinions or theories in entertainment news. As we take the week off, here are three of our most popular topics from earlier this year, as well as our review of The First Purge AND major Top Gun 2 news. Also, visit PodcastAwards.com and vote for The HO in People's Choice and TV/Film!

First up, from Episode 301, it's the most emotional relationships on television. We discuss some of those relationships in TV that either broke or healed our aching hearts. Perhaps they filled our cups with joy, or maybe their angst flowed over into our own realities. It’s an intriguing conversation and there is no better time to discuss it.

Next, we head to Episode 299 where we debated the best way to defeat an iconic movie hero! The villains rarely win, which means heroes are far more difficult to bring down. Therefore, on this episode we put ourselves firmly in the shoes of supervillains and megalomaniacs everywhere and determine exactly how we would bring down iconic movie heroes such as Iron Man, Batman, Harry Potter, James Bond, and even Luke Skywalker!

Finally, we come to Episode 306 and when it's time for the hero to walk away. Think about it, does it make a hero less heroic if they reach a point where it’s just too much for them? Were there moments in a movie or TV show where a hero going forward seemed to be the absolutely wrong choice? Our topic this episode revolves around this very concept of when is it OK for a hero to walk away?

31 Mar 2016What Defines A Family Film In 2016 | Ep 22401:34:22

It seems like things keep going darker these days, and even Disney animated films like Zootopia are tackling harsh topics like diversity. Meanwhile Star Wars, Marvel and DC pump out numerous films that the entire family goes to where there is constant wanton destruction.

That brings us to our topic – What constitutes a family film in 2016?

17 Jul 2018Vigilantes in Film and TV - Are They Justified? | 31901:45:17

A vigilante is any person who takes the law into their own hands to avenge a crime. When you mention the word, a few names immediately pop into mind: Batman, The Bride, Paul Kersey, The Equalizer. Film vaults are stock full of men and women who have been wronged for one reason or another, and chose to journey outside of the law to avenge those wrongs. Yet in the scheme of things, the facts are simple: these people are criminals.

This week, we discuss what it is about vigilantes that excite audiences around the world. Why do we love what these people do? Is it right to applaud mass murderers? Are vigilantes fundamentally justified? It's an interesting topic about a group of people we often applaud, without really considering what it is we're applauding.

Also this week: Our reviews of Skyscraper and Netflix's How It Ends, new releases including The Equalizer 2, Unfriended: Dark Web, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, and more; news including Joss Whedon returning to TV via HBO, Zombieland 2 is a go, and much more.

28 Apr 2016The Movie Soundtrack Of Our Lives | Ep 22801:52:41

Do you remember that song from that one movie? The one that came on the radio as soon as you left the theater, causing you to crank the dial all the way up, drop the windows down and scream out of your window in the vicinity of random strangers?

THAT’S the song we’re talking about this week, as we dive into what we consider to be the greatest original film song of all-time. Is it Purple Rain? Maybe Danger Zone? How about Goldfinger?

Grab that broom handle and bring your vocal stylings along for a trip down memory lane as we determine our personal favorites and even whip up a movie soundtrack of our lives.
