24 Nov 2024 | The Hockey Healer - Dr. Kerry Johnson EP147 | 01:35:37
If there's one guarantee from my experiences being a hockey player, there's going to be a few times during your career where you had an injury or got dinged up. After a while, and going through the normal therapy & healing protocols, things don't improve as planned, resulting in you not being able to get back on the ice. What do you do then? I'll tell you, you search everywhere for a possible solution, sometimes months will go by without finding a resolution. That's where someone like Dr. Johnson comes to the rescue. Solving the unsolvable is the best way I can describe what I witnessed with my wife and kids seeing Doc Johnson. I can't remember how we found him, but I know it wasn't me. We're going to get a bunch of questions answered and then some. Thanks for stopping by. Have a productive day and enjoy this fantastic episode, co-hosted with my son Rem Pitlick :) To Learn More about Dr. Kerry Johnson - https://www.instagram.com/johnsonspinalcare/?hl=en https://johnsonspinalcare.com/team/dr-kerry-johnson/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NUCCA To Learn more about Coach Lance - Online Hockey Training Largest Online Data-Base Off-Ice Stickhandling, Passing and Shooting Drills https://www.onlinehockeytraining.com/ In-person lessons with Coach Lance https://www.sweethockeycoach.com/

07 Dec 2022 | The Performance Advantage EP75 | 00:32:40
Now that everyone knows I'm doing podcasts, I'm getting requests to do an episode on a specific topic. A couple of weeks ago, I was asked to do one on adversity, as a couple of my players were trying to get over a wall that suddenly appeared in their lives. But now that the winter season is rocking, the common theme being asked by these student-athletes is how to play at a higher level consistently. Why do you think that is? Because everyone loves to win a game once in a while, and the only way to do that is by playing at your best. Is there a performance advantage that you have yet to hear about? I hope we'll get closer to answering that question by the end of this episode. Many have made the topic of peak performance their life's work, and I'm going to lean on them to help me out here and share with you some of their most important and impactful findings, with the hope that the wisdom you're about to hear will help you become a little better version of yourself! For the following books I'm going to refer to, please know that I'm only scratching the surface of all the learning nuggets in each title. If something resonates with you from a specific book, I highly encourage you to pick up a copy of your own by the end of this episode and read it. I've put the links to each below. 22 Jan 2023 | No Mistakes - No Hardship - No Failures - No Successes - EP84 | 00:33:53
As we settle into the new year, with hopefully a slightly new and improved daily routine, I always think it's a good idea to take a few minutes and go over in our heads, our relationship with mistakes, hardships or failures. It is a relationship you know, and the better we can understand it and how those few words we try to avoid, for some at all costs, are the critical stepping stones to our future successes. Always remember, no mistakes, no hardship, no failures, no successes. You know I love to read and I'd like to share with you a few books and related quotes that may get you thinking a little differently about your relationship with mistakes, self-sabotaging thoughts, and negative thinking, in order to increase the likelihood of totally crushing your short and long-term goals. For the following books I'm going to reference, know that I'm only scratching the surface of all the learning nuggets and goodness from each of the titles. If one connects with you by the end of this episode, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of your own and read it in its entirety. I've put the links below. 22 Jul 2024 | Logan Cuvo founder Best Dam Tape Hockey Journey EP140 | 00:49:50
Today, we have a special guest joining us on the Hockey Journey podcast: Logan Cuvo. Having started a number of small hockey-related businesses, I love hearing the history of a startup and the founder's voyage, which always begins at some point with venturing out into an unforeseen landscape that might be dominated by some goliaths. Mr. Cuvo wasn't always a businessman, though. He played the game, so we'll begin there and work our way up to where he is now: owning a company that apparently has the Best Dam Tape on the market! I really enjoyed hearing Mr. Cuvo's story, and I hope you do as well! My next guest is Joe Dziedzic and I'm super excited to hear his hockey journey. Joe grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he spent his childhood playing football, hockey and baseball. By the time he finished his high school career he had college scholarship offers for all 3 sports. In 1990, his senior year at Edison High School, he won Mr. Hockey, which is awarded to Minnesota's best male high school hockey player, and later that same year he was drafted in the 3rd round, 61st overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins. After high school, he began his college career with the hometown team, the Minnesota Gophers. Following 4 years of schooling and hockey growth, he would sign with the Penguins and go on to play in 130 NHL games with Pittsburgh and at the time, the Phoenix Coyotes, but it was a career cut short because of an eye injury. After his retirement he got into coaching at the team level and also doing small group skill development training through JD Hockey. He's currently the head coach at Minneapolis High School and was the 2022 Minnesota High School Coach of the year, so we have a lot to talk about. 17 Jul 2022 | Leadership (Part 1) EP45 | 00:28:47
My Mom and Dad looked at each other with blank faces, a short pause and then looked at me and said, the thought never crossed their mind. My Dad did interject this, he said, I don't know Lance, I guess I just remember telling you to be an engine and not a caboose. I chuckled and told him that I remember him saying that to me, and I'm grateful for that small, short, simple sentence, because it's stuck with me to this day. But what the conversation showed me, was that I'm sure there's all kinds of other parents, kids, teachers or instructors out there that might have the same question, how is leadership acquired or taught? What do those conversations sound like, when should they start in one's life, and, is there a competitive advantage out there, when it comes to acquiring leadership skills, available to everyone, that you might have missed the boat on? Well, I'm not an expert in the field of leadership, but there are many in this world who have made this quality or characteristic their life's work, and we're going to see what they have to say on the topic. For the following books I'm going to reference, know that I'm only scratching the surface of all the learning nuggets in each of the titles. If something resonates with you from a certain book, by the end of this episode, I highly encourage you to pick up a copy of your own and read it in its entirety. 24 Jul 2022 | Jeremy Goldberg - What is LeagueApps? EP46 | 00:51:03
Most of us coaches, players, and parents, take for granted the enormous amount of work that goes on behind the scenes from a small group of individuals. Who orders the jerseys, takes registrations, and organizes the ice schedules. Who tracks payments and waivers, runs the tryouts, and puts together the committees and communicates to the parents? So much of what we think about regarding a hockey association or organization, has to do with things that happen on the ice. But the true success of a program is based on what happens off the ice, so that on-ice games and practices seem to run effortlessly. One company that's assisting hockey programs everywhere with behind the scenes optimization is LeagueApps.com and I got their captain here today, Jeremy Goldberg, the President of LeagueApps. I hope you enjoy his story and how they're helping hockey and other sports organizations and associations run silky smooth! Learn more about LeagueApps @ https://leagueapps.com/

20 Apr 2022 | The Hero's Journey - EP26 | 00:53:47
The other day my oldest son Rem asked me if I'd ever heard of the hero's journey. I said that I hadn't, so he suggested I look up a guy named Joseph Campbell, who in 1949 wrote a book called The Hero with 1000 Faces. Little did I know, but so many movies that are so familiar to so many of us, are based on the framework and writings of Mr. Campbell's book, like Star Wars, Shrek, Batman, Harry Potter, The Lion King, and the Matrix to mention a few. I have to admit, this is all new to me, but it sparked something and now I want to learn more, because, as you'll find out, The Hero's Journey is really about each and every one of us. I brought back my good friend and mind mentor Don Ollivet, THe OLLIE Man to help explain what exactly is the Hero's Journey. Enjoy the conversation.
14 Apr 2024 | Blake Sloan Hockey Journey EP135 (Part Two) | 01:03:40
Well it happens sometimes, when I do an interview with someone, the hour flys by and we don't even come close to finishing the hockey journey of the individual. I thought I'd have to wait weeks to get back on Mr. Sloan's schedule, but I got that lane to the net and here we are a few days later, ready to tap into part 2 of his hockey journey. Here's where we left off. He's new to the professional game, was asked to move from a life-time of playing defense, up to playing forward in the minors from time to time with the Houston Aeros. Caught the attention of the Dallas Stars brass his second year, and was offered an NHL contract at the end of that campaign. We know from part one, that he jumped on a rocket ship when he signed with the Stars, playing in their final 12 regular season games, and most of their NHL playoff games, capping off an unbelievable year by winning the Stanley cup. If you're ready to get wowed & inspired a second time with Blake Sloan, well grab the beverage of your choice and settle into part two of his story, Here we go :) To learn more about Blake Sloan - https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=5010 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blake_Sloan For more information regarding Coach Lance Pitlick Online Hockey Training Largest Online Data-Base Off-Ice Stickhandling, Passing and Shooting Drills https://www.onlinehockeytraining.com/ In-person lessons with Coach Lance https://www.sweethockeycoach.com/

11 Jun 2023 | Speed on Ice: The Brett Strot Method - EP103 | 01:04:24
In this episode of The Hockey Journey Podcast, host Lance Pittner reunites with Brett Strot, a former University of Minnesota teammate, to discuss Strot's extensive and diverse journey in hockey. From a player with a decade-long professional career to a respected coach in the US, particularly within the USA Women's Hockey program, Strot shares insights from his experiences and the philosophies that have shaped his approach to hockey and coaching. Key Highlights: Early Beginnings: Raised in Minnesota, Strot's passion for hockey was kindled in a state known for its deep hockey roots. Engaging in multiple sports, including soccer and baseball, Strot attributes much of his hockey development to playing boot hockey and participating in local rinks, emphasizing the importance of anticipation and reading the game. Coaching Influence: Strot's father played a pivotal role in his early development, teaching him visualization techniques and the power of mental preparation from a young age, a skill set that later distinguished him as a player and coach. Professional Career: After college, Strot embarked on a professional hockey career that spanned ten years, taking him to various locations and eventually concluding in Jacksonville, Florida. His journey underscores the dedication and adaptability required to sustain a long-term career in professional sports. Transition to Coaching: Post-retirement, Strot remained in Florida, where he has become known as one of the top hockey development coaches in the US. His work with the USA Women's Hockey program, particularly as part of the staff for the 2018 gold medal-winning Olympic team, highlights his expertise in player development and the importance of mental training. Philosophy on Speed and Hockey Sense: Contrary to traditional beliefs, Strot argues that both speed and hockey sense can be taught and developed. His coaching methods incorporate over-speed training and a focus on the mental aspects of the game, advocating for a holistic approach to player development. Impactful Mentors: Strot credits several mentors, including Jack Blatherwick at the University of Minnesota and sports psychologist Dr. Colleen Hacker, for influencing his understanding of the physical and psychological components of hockey. These mentors emphasized the significance of mental preparation, visualization, and the application of these principles in real-time scenarios. 25 Mar 2024 | Nontraditional Hockey Teaching w/Barry Karn & Karn Skating Dynamics EP132 | 01:09:54
Today is a treat for me, as I love when I can have our next guest, skating instructor extraordinaire Barry Karn on the show. He's one of our most popular guests here on the hockey journey podcast. After you're done with this episode, you can also check out numbers 12, 78 and 79 for a whole lot more of Barry Karn goodness. Recently, one of my other companies, Online Hockey Training started posting again , the Instagram, youtube and the facebook to mention a few after a good 2 year break. One category I like to highlight is the opposite hand training I have players work on and the benefits, but wanted a different, more catchy title, and then I remembered something Mr. Karn said; "disagreeable training!" I texted him, asking if he'd mind if I used the term, he proceeded to give me one of the longest texts I've ever received on disagreeable training and how it's such a critical ingredient in a kids childhood development. Right then and there, I said it's been too long, I don't know what the topic is going to be, but I need to get a little Barry Karn fix. So ladies and gentlemen, if you're ready to brave this trip with me here today, soon to be traveling through uncharted waters, well sit back, get comfy, settle in, put your tray table in it's upright and locked position, and get ready for a discussion on how one of the top skating instructor's in the world non traditionally teaches. 20 Mar 2022 | Francois Gagnon RDS Professional Journalist Journey EP17 | 00:50:51
When most of us think about a hockey Journey, we think of one through the eyes of a player, but not everyone has that opportunity, for a variety of reasons. But there's another group of individuals who've had a hockey journey, reached the top of their game, but just in a different sector. Fransois Gagnon has one of those stories and is currently a professional writer for RDS covering the historic Montreal Canadian franchise. From a journalist perspective, I don't think there can be a more prestigious position in the hockey world, especially if you're French Canadian. Was a kid that early on knew he wasn't going to be more than a mediocre hockey player, but was mentored early by a friend's father that changed his trajectory and propelled Francois eventually to the upper crest of that industry. So many great stories and messages!! I really enjoyed the conversation and I hope you do as well. You can follow Francois on Twitter - @GagnonFrancois

05 Mar 2023 | Slapshot to Startup: How One Hockey Pro is Changing the Game On and Off the Ice EP 89 | 00:50:42
Ladies and gentlemen, put your skates on and get ready to glide into our next interview! I am thrilled to introduce a man with ice in his veins and a business on his mind. He's the one, the only Josh Healey! This Canadian-born hockey star has been hitting pucks since his days in Alberta, and now he's making waves in his 7th season as a pro with the San Diego Gulls. But it's not just his slapshot that's impressive - it's his business acumen! Josh and I first crossed paths when he played alongside my son Rem for the Milwaukee Admirals back in 2019. As we chatted, he revealed he'd been working on a secret project for years, all while tearing up the ice. And what is this project, you ask? Only the coolest thing since Zambonis - The Sports Aux app! This platform is a godsend for hockey players looking to get recruited - for both men and women! If you want to get scouted, you must get on this app faster than a puck flying toward the goal. And if you're not convinced yet, let me tell you - Josh is like the Mario Lemieux of business. He's read all the books, done all the research, and created a platform that's the real deal. So don't be a benchwarmer, folks. Check out The Sports Aux app and get ready to score some goals. I'll even provide you with the link, so there are no excuses! And while you're at it, check out the books he's been reading too. Trust me. They're more exciting than a game-winning goal in overtime. Thanks for tuning in, folks. It's been a real hoot, and I hope you enjoyed this interview as much as I did. Until next time, keep your stick on the ice and your head in the game! My next guest, Lee Erickson has worn many hockey hats. His journey began as a player, progressing to on-ice skills instructor, hockey coach, owner and operator of the Lumberyard Hockey Sports Center, owner and operator of the Rivertown Hockey AAA program, married, a father of three very accomplished college student-athletes, and if that wasn't enough, he's an inventor and has developed a vision training aid, that helps hockey players work on playing the game more with their eyes up than they are down. 02 Oct 2022 | Bill Butters - Former NHLer - Hockey Ministries - Hockey Journey EP58 | 00:56:50
My next guest is former WHA player and NHLer Bill Butters. I've been excited about this interview since I booked it, as Mr. Butters was one of my coaches when I played at the University of Minnesota. He made a huge positive impact on my life, during the four years I played for the Gophers. Mr. Butters is a Minnesota Native and carved his path to professional hockey, eventually the NHL, not by putting many points up on the board, but by bringing crowds to their feet, by what he could do with his fists. Back in the 1970s, if you weren't a skill guy or Canadian, the only way to make it past college hockey, if you were an American, was by fighting, and that's exactly what Mr. Butters did, playing 7 professional seasons, playing 299 games and registering 607 penalty minutes. Before turning pro, Mr. Butters played four seasons at the University of Minnesota, where he was mentored by two hockey icons, Glen Sonmor and legendary coach Herb Brooks. Those two would weave in and out of Bill's life and support him as there were some struggles along the way. Let's not forget his wife Deb, who also stood by his side during a dark period of his journey. Mr. Butters enjoyed a 14-year college coaching career as an assistant at the University of Minnesota, the University of Wisconsin, and Bethel College. Ever since I've known him, he's had a higher power guiding him along the way. That passion and commitment is seen clearly through his work over the years with Hockey Ministries International and Christian Hockey Camps International, mentoring hockey players worldwide, and spreading the word of the Lord. In addition to all of the hockey stuff, he's a husband of 50 years this year, father of 3, and grandfather of 7, so we have a lot to talk about. I've included the link to Hockey Ministries International if you'd like to learn more about what Mr. Butters has been involved with for over 40 years. Enjoy the interview, and thanks for stopping by for a listen!! Have a great Day!! Hockey Ministries International - https://www.hockeyministries.org/
19 Oct 2022 | John Vanbiesbrouck Hockey Journey EP63 | 01:02:16
My next guest, John Vanbiesbrouck, was pretty good at goaltending craft. This Detroit, Michigan native took a different hockey path, deciding to swim against the current, forgoing the traditional college route, and going up to Canada to play major junior. In 1981, he was drafted in the 4th round, 72nd overall to the New York Rangers, where he played most of his career. He also played for New Jersey, Philadelphia, the New York Islanders, and down in Florida, where he backstopped the Panthers to the Stanley Cup Finals. He's won the Vezina Trophy, was an NHL All-Star several times, holds several goaltending records, played in 882 NHL games, was inducted into the USA Hockey Hall of Fame, and is currently the assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey. Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy the conversation! Have a great day!!

04 May 2022 | How to Set and Achieve Your Hockey Goals EP30 | 00:27:21
Since the school year will soon be wrapping up, I thought it made sense to have an episode about how to set and achieve your hockey goals. Summer is right around the corner and is a time when players can make significant gains in their hockey development, because you don’t have school and now have a bunch of extra hours to do whatever you want. In the last 5-6 years, reading books consistently became important to me again, after a 15-year hiatus. I've gained so much knowledge from the extra effort I put in weekly, and have implemented a lot of the suggestions or tips into my daily routine. To help paint a clearer picture regarding how to set and achieve goals, I've picked 4 of my favorite titles that I'd like to incorporate into this episode. 16 Nov 2022 | Adversity, A Source of Strength? EP69 | 00:32:16
How do you view adversity? For many of us, it's something to be avoided at all costs, while another group of individuals views and uses adversity as a source of strength. My relationship with adversity has been an up-and-down battle over the years, but now at the medium-paced age of 55, it doesn't bother me anymore. I've accepted that adversity is always coming, and there's nothing I can do to stop it. I’m only in control of how I react to it. This evolution didn't pop into my head one day. I’ve used resources, books, podcasts, and videos to find ways to manage adversity best. The books I'm going to reference opened my mind to a different way of thinking, and I hope they will have the same effect on you. This conversation explores Duffy's multifaceted career and how his experiences translate into training hockey players. Here's a closer look at Duffy's journey and insights: Mike Duffy's Background: Raised in South Minneapolis, Duffy didn't play ice hockey but was deeply involved in various sports and activities. His journey into martial arts began as a means of self-defense and evolved into a passion that defines much of his professional life today. Diverse Skills and Interests: Duffy's professional repertoire includes roles as an entrepreneur, tactical trainer, certified gun safety instructor, personal trainer, martial arts instructor, boxing instructor, public speaker, private pilot, model, and actor. His commitment to empowering others covers health, well-being, personal safety, mental health, trauma recovery, and holistic lifestyle. Encounter with Hockey Through Training: Duffy's introduction to the hockey world came through training Coach Plick's sons, Rett and Rem. This experience was Duffy's first foray into applying his martial arts and physical training expertise on ice, offering a new dimension to hockey training. Innovative Training Approach on Ice: The training sessions incorporated martial arts principles, focusing on power, speed, strength, and the mental aspect of the game. Duffy adapted scenarios from martial arts to hockey situations, such as puck battles along the boards and defensive positioning, to enhance the players' physical and psychological edge. Impact of Martial Arts on Hockey Training: The application of martial arts techniques to hockey training highlighted the importance of control, leverage, and mental toughness. Duffy emphasized the transfer of skills from martial arts to hockey, particularly in terms of movement efficiency, body control, and the strategic aspect of engaging in physical play. Philosophy and Mentality Transfer: Duffy's training philosophy goes beyond physical skills, delving into the mental and emotional resilience required in competitive sports. 11 May 2022 | Taylor Williamson: Winning the Draw: Mastering Hockey Face-Offs - EP32 | 01:11:46
In episode 110 of the "Hockey Journey" podcast, Coach Lance Plick chats with Taylor Williamson, a former Minnesota Golden Gopher and current trainer with the Oates Sports Group, about the nuances of hockey, focusing particularly on face-offs and communication with coaches. Here's a breakdown of the insightful discussion they had: Importance of Face-Offs: Williamson emphasizes that face-offs are pivotal moments in a game that can capture or shift momentum. Recognizing the opportunity each draw presents is crucial for players at all levels. Preparation and Strategy: Before engaging in a face-off, having a clear plan and ensuring all teammates are aware of it is essential. Observing the opposing center's stance and adjusting your approach accordingly can provide an advantage. Body posture, hand positioning on the stick, and focusing on the referee rather than the opponent are key elements to success. Execution Techniques: Players should opt for a stance that allows agility and quick movement, avoiding being too bent over. Depending on the side of the ice and whether facing a lefty or righty, strategies may vary. Utilizing a backhand or forehand approach can be dictated by the situation and personal strengths. Communication with teammates is vital to executing a successful play post-face-off. Practicing Off-Ice: Williamson suggests practicing face-offs off the ice using simple exercises with friends or teammates. Watching games and paying attention to successful face-off techniques can also provide valuable learning opportunities. Approaching Coaches: Both Plick and Williamson stress the importance of open communication with coaches. Players should not hesitate to seek feedback or discuss concerns and aspirations. They recommend approaching coaches with specific questions and a willingness to listen and improve. Professionalism and Growth: The discussion also touches on the professionalism required in athletes, not just in their sport but in life skills such as communication and handling feedback constructively. The New Women's Professional League: The conversation concludes with excitement about the new women's professional hockey league, emphasizing the opportunities it opens for female athletes to pursue their passion for hockey beyond college. Summer is officially here and is a time when a kid can make some huge gains in a lot of different areas because you don't have the school commitments and for the next few months, you have more time on your hands. The question is are you going to use that time productively, or is that time going to use you, by wasting it watching others on your smartphone for hours a day, growing as an individual at the slowest pace. Today, I want to challenge all of you listeners out there, especially the players out there, to add one new thing this summer, to your daily schedule, that you will spend 15-20 minutes a day executing. You have to view this challenge and whatever your goal is, in the same light as breathing, eating and sleeping. It's done every day for the whole summer. An Awesome Day with Robb Stauber!
Hi everyone, this is going to be an awesome day, as my son Rem is sitting in on this episode, and I am pumped to visit with a former teammate of mine from the University of Minnesota – goaltender Robb Stauber. I'm not kidding you when I say he was the most talented goalie I got to play in front of. Maybe I think that because he saved my butt probably hundreds of times after a bad read or when I coughed up the puck for a breakaway. Mr. Stauber was always there for me! By my sophomore year, I’d hardly backcheck when I made a bonehead play, because I knew Robb was there. He’s the 1st goalie to ever win the Hobey Baker Award, made it to the top of the hockey mountain as a player with NHL stops in LA and Buffalo, and has pursued equally impressive coaching and entrepreneurial ventures. This is Part One of an incredible hockey journey. I hope you enjoy it! Learn More About Robb Stauber

Conversation with Michael O'Neill
Today's Conversation with Michael O'Neill
Today’s conversation is with someone I'm grateful is in my life and respect immensely, Michael O'Neill. Mr. O'Neill has worn many hats over the years: a club hockey player during his college days, a dedicated youth hockey coach, and a respected attorney who once helped me through a significant business legal matter. Today, our conversation comes full circle, as our sons face off against each other in college hockey this weekend—a moment that marks just how much our hockey journeys have intertwined. Mike didn’t accomplish anything of significance as a hockey player, but his contributions in the past as a youth hockey coach are immeasurable. The hockey diamond in the rough connection that puts Mr. O'Neill at the highest level is his contributions to Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services (SMRLS), which helps people that are in need of legal services but can’t afford it. 11 Sep 2022 | The Power of Positivity EP53 | 00:34:49
Did you know that researchers did a study where they interviewed people who were on their deathbed, asking what their biggest regrets in life were? Wishing they were happier more was consistent across the board. Interesting, so shouldn't we learn from these people and strive not to have the same regret when that time comes for us? There is so much negativity in the media today. I've done my best to limit the negative social media from infiltrating my days. Still, it's hard as it's the norm to say, "did you hear about what happened downtown? I can't believe so and so tweeted that about so and so," in daily random conversations. But does it have to be that way? Do we have to play along with the masses and keep mindlessly contributing to this non-necessary practice, by passing on negativity through our conversations? For the following books, I'm going to reference, know that I'm only scratching the surface of all the learning nuggets in each title. If something resonates with you from a certain book, by the end of this episode, I highly encourage you to pick up a copy of your own and read it in its entirety. I've included the links below. 07 Apr 2024 | Blake Sloan Hockey Journey EP13 (Part One) | 01:05:36
I can't wait to share my next guest, Blake Sloan's hockey journey, because it is truly remarkable. Let me quickly summarize it in a couple sentences. Broken ankle, broken face, high school championship, NCAA National Champion, Stanley Cup Champion, a Europe Professional League Championship, and was on the bench when one of his Michigan teammates introduced the world to the now famous, the original Michigan move and lacrosse style goal. Though he accomplished and experienced a lot of the good stuff during his incredible hockey journey, unfortunately, the road he traveled wasn't scripted to perfection, not having any challenges or hardships along the way, where everything just came easy for him. That doesn't happen for anyone, and Mr. Sloan was no exception. If you want to hear the story of a kid, who let his character, work ethic, adaptability and never give up mentality until you get what you want, then buckle up because we are in for a wild ride. If you're ready to get wowed & inspired, grab the beverage of your choice and settle into a story that I know you're going to love, and this is only part one of his journey. 23 Oct 2022 | Sports Stories (Part 1) EP64 | 00:31:13
During my playing days, I liked Stephen King and James Patterson, sprinkling in some self-help books. But after retiring from the National Hockey League and not even getting close to winning a Stanley Cup, my curiosity to witness people triumphing at the highest levels, somehow performing perfecting during a playoff run, or pulling off the impossible at an event or tournament continues to grow year after year. These sports moments and the characters who played their particular role happen all the time to people, but for most of us, if we've even heard of the story, we rarely know the whole journey and all that went into preparing for that moment in time. For today's episode on the Hockey Journey Podcast, I want to share some fantastic sports stories that inspired me, and I hope they'll do the same for you. For the following books, I'm going to reference, know that I'm only scratching the surface of all the learning nuggets in each title. If something resonates with you from a particular book, by the end of this episode, I highly encourage you to pick up a copy of your own and read it in its entirety. I'll put the links to each of the titles in the description.

Scott Bjugstad had the hockey player trifecta, by being able to play for his hometown college (Minnesota Gophers) and professional team (Minnesota North Stars), and the once in a lifetime experience of becoming an Olympian, and all of this was accomplished after the tragic loss of his Mother during his high school years. His story is one of self-belief, grit and determination, with his Mom always being the guiding force. What I love is that he continues to share his journey by passing on what he's learned and developed over the years since retiring, to the players he gets in front of on a weekly basis. 26 Oct 2022 | Chris Hansen - Time On The Water - Hockey Journey EP65 | 01:02:29
My next guest, Chris Hansen, is probably someone you've never heard of, but he's been my best friend since I met him back in 1979, and he's got a journey and story to tell. It includes hockey, fishing, dogs, 2 critical periods in his life where he almost died twice. The second and most recent event landed him in the ICU, in a coma, and hooked up to every monitoring and life-saving device available to keep his heart beating. You'll hear his story of recovery from a traumatic brain injury and how it's manifested through a lot of sweat equity and passion into a non-profit, where Mr. Hansen and his band of love-giving gypsies are providing fishing trips and experiences for Military Veterans, First Responders, Police, and Fire, as well as Teachers and Health Care Workers since 2015. If that wasn't enough, Chris is a realtor by trade and has given back 25% of his commission to our hero clients, close to $200,000 over the last 5 years. Chris and his partners, Mike Ferrell and Katie Lavander, do all the fundraising for Time on the Water, so our heroes get to have these fishing excursions at no cost. 29 May 2022 | Ben Hankinson - NHL Player - NHLPA Player Agent - Hockey Journey EP37 | 01:27:34
My next guest, Ben Hankinson, has been someone I've wanted to get on the show since I got into the podcast game, because we spent a lot of time together years ago, as college teammates and training partners once we turned pro in the off-season. Mr. Hankinson is a Minnesota native, where he grew up going to school and playing sports for the powerhouse Edina Hornets. He went on to play Division 1 hockey for the hometown Minnesota Gophers. In the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, Ben was drafted in the 6th round, 107th overall to the New Jersey Devils, playing 448 professional games over seven seasons, 43 of them in the NHL. Wasn't much for goal scoring, but did carve his way to the NHL by chucking the knuckles a bit, as he was fighting in the heavyweight division. Those were scary individuals!! He's currently a certified NHLPA player Agent with Octagon Hockey, so we have a lot to discuss. Enjoy the conversation! For more information, please visit the links below. 31 Mar 2024 | Dan Woog Hockey Journey EP133 | 01:11:56
I'm super excited to have my next guest, Dan Woog on the Hockey Journey Podcast. He grew up in the state of hockey and carved out an impressive career, eventually earning a college roster spot at the University of Minnesota, and we're going to find out how he did it. If you think the road he had to travel was easy, well, if almost dying in a rock slide near his South St. Paul home was part of the plan, being told he'd never walk again, and if he did, it would be with a limp, I want to see how he climbed out of that challenging experience and realized his hockey dream! Dan's hockey journey is part one of the story, being the son of one of the most influential, iconic hockey individuals Minnesota has ever produced, my coach at the University of Minnesota, is part two of the story. I really enjoyed going back to a period of time on my hockey journey, that shaped me and prepared me for what I didn't know then, but would eventually end up being a 12 year professional career, and my experience at that school prepared me to take advantage of that once in a life-time hockey opportunity! So sit back, grab your preferred beverage, and let's dive into the hockey journey of Dan Woog. Thanks for stopping by, enjoy the conversation and I hope you have a wonderfully productive day!! 22 May 2022 | Kerry Goulet - Pro - Stop Concussions - Hockey Journey EP35 | 01:16:01
My next guest, Kerry Goulet was born and raised in Winnipeg, and it was there that he starred in junior hockey and later in ball hockey. His Winnipeg Grasshoppers, represented Manitoba in 8 national ball hockey championships, collecting the title in 1985. In 2006, Kerry was inducted into the Canadian Ball Hockey Association’s Hall of Fame. He credits his experience with Hockey Manitoba and ball hockey with assisting in honing his skills for a successful international ice hockey career that saw him spend 16 seasons as a player, coach, and general manager with six different teams in the German 1st, 2nd and 3rd Division. His years as a player saw him collect an astounding 1997 points in 505 games which earned Goulet the honor of having his jersey (#29) retired. At the age of 52, he was asked back to his old club in Germany to attempt to collect 2000 points….which he did with a 5-3 win contributing a goal and two assists. Kerry’s coaching record was also sensational, with 312 wins in 452 games. Kerry has dedicated much of his office energy to charitable causes, with his focus on concussions and spinal cord injuries in sport. His motivation behind the cause comes from his former hockey and ball hockey teammate, who suffered a broken neck, leaving him a quadriplegic. One of the lessons learned from his friend Robert’s plight Goulet recalls was, “It is not what you collect along your journey…championships, scoring races, trophies, money, cars…. but what you give back, that will be your legacy.” A motto Kerry has adopted in his everyday life post being on the ice. Goulet is one of the founders of Stop Concussions, along with former NHLer Keith Primeau. 06 Mar 2022 | Tim Jackman's Hockey Journey of Patience and Endurance | 01:04:27
My next guest Tim Jackman would have scared the crap out of me if I had to play against him, as he was as tough as they came. This Minnesota native was a second-round pick by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2001 NHL draft. Played 2 seasons of college hockey at Minnesota State University, and became the first student-athlete from that university to play in the NHL. In his 14 year professional career, he ended up playing 483 games, in the show, putting up 75 points and 806 penalty minutes. A hockey journey that had a foundation of patience and endurance

He's also been developing players via camps and clinics over the years, and I just so happened to cross paths with this special individual in the mid-'90s when I was with the Ottawa Senators. Super excited to reconnect, as I don't think I've ever met someone who knows more people in the sport of hockey but, more importantly, has at least one detailed story about that person, and we're going to hear a few of them today. 19 Feb 2023 | Transforming Your Life Through Health and Wellness: A Conversation with Barbero Caico EP87 | 00:58:01
My next guest on the show is Barbero Caico, who was recently introduced to me by my oldest son, Rem. I'm grateful that Rem made the connection for several reasons. Firstly, Barbero is an amazing person, and our correspondence so far has been really enjoyable. Secondly, I always love talking to people who are passionate about something, especially when it comes to health and wellness. If learning from their experiences can help others become better versions of themselves, then that truly excites me. As I prepared for the interview, I faced some challenges researching Barbero. Unlike most people, he seems to have a minimal online presence, but I discovered that he had faced some tough times growing up. However, he found a book called "How to Eat, Move and Be Healthy" by Paul Chek in his early 20s, which was a turning point in his life. This book led him on a path that has brought him to where he is today, which I assume is a super happy place for him now. I'll be sharing all the important information from our interview below so you can learn more about Barbero and what we covered. Thank you for joining us. 21 Aug 2022 | Meditation - What is it and How can it Benefit You? EP50 | 00:37:15
What is Meditation? Before I decided to learn more about this self-improvement practice, I have to be honest with you, my perception of meditation was someone sitting on a mountain side, on a flat surface, with their legs crossed, hands on top of the knees with one of the fingers, pressing against the thumb on each hand, making a circle, with a straight back, head tilted back slightly, eyes closed, and with a calming hum, purring in a consistent cadence, Huuuuuummmmmmmm, Huuuuuuuuummmmmm. Maybe some of you out there have the same mental image. It seems that for every high performer I read about or listen to, the majority of them put meditation as a high-priority habit and dedicate daily time to the practice. This is all new to me and I look forward to understanding this world-wide healthy living tradition or method. Below are the books I'll be using to better understand meditation. Enjoy the Episode! 04 Dec 2022 | Leadership (Part 2) EP74 | 00:31:20
As the first winter snowfall has been deposited here in Minnesota, that can mean only one thing, and the hockey season has begun. Being around the game of hockey my whole life, I was tied to a team each season, as a player till 32 years of age or as a youth hockey coach for 17 years after that. A hockey season can have so many storylines by springtime. Individuals and teams might have nothing but success and flow the entire year, but that would be the experience of the minority, as most of us travel a road packed with extremes in the next 4 to 6 months that will test our character and resolve. I remember being on or coaching several teams where I thought we had a chance to do some damage, only to have the team be decimated by injury or sickness at critical times where we couldn't recover. Covid was the perfect example of this, as it forced teams to not think too far in the future, and they learned how to battle when their backs were up against the wall. This podcast is about life experiences that develop into acquiring leadership qualities. Some of you out there may already be on a path of leadership, others maybe haven't thought about it much until now. What I'd like to do with this episode is share with you some quotes from some books that helped me learn more about what leadership is and how to acquire more leadership qualities. I consider myself a quiet lead-by-example player, but I am not an expert in the field. But, many have made the topic of leadership their life's work and I'd like to share with you some of their most important and impactful findings, with the hope that the wisdom you're about to hear will help you become a little better version of yourself! For the following books, I'm going to reference, know that I'm only scratching the surface of all the learning nuggets in each of the titles. If something resonates with you from a specific book, I highly encourage you to pick up a copy of your own by the end of this episode and read it. The links to each of the titles are below. 05 Oct 2022 | Procrastination - How to Beat It? EP59 | 00:32:22
In today's episode, we're going to be discussing procrastination. If there's one thing I deal with daily, almost on an hourly basis, and that's procrastination. I go to bed knowing what I want to accomplish the next day, with 100% certainty that I'll have no problem knocking each item off the list one by one with ease, but for years and years, I could never get all the things I thought I could get done from the planning session the night before. Has this ever happened to you? When I finally had enough and wanted to know why my productivity was slower than others, so I started to track where my 24 hours each day were going. After a few days of close analysis, all the signs pointed to one single affliction, I'm a procrastinator! But with that being said, I'm a much-improved procrastinator 30 years later, meaning procrastination doesn't get as many minutes or hours a day from me as it once did. I'd like to share some quotes from books that have helped me beat procrastination most days. In part 4 and final episode on my journey as a hockey player, we'll cover the final 2 years I played for the Ottawa Senators, where I finally sign a one-way contract, I become a father. I had to deal with a roommate that was a sleepwalker, I make it to free agency, and had to say goodbye to all of our Canadian friends, as we make a move down to South Florida and all the fun that came along with that ride. And finally, I have to answer the question every hockey player has to ask themselves at some point, can I continue on for one more year, or is it time to retire?
