20 Feb 2024Ep 54 | The Value in the Un-Paid Work of Parenting with Lori Sugarman-Li00:50:34

First of all, I’m so grateful to all of you, Listeners, for being on the podcast journey with me for one full year of episodes! I’m proud of the episodes I’ve been able to bring you and have so much more to offer. Today’s guest is no exception. I am thrilled to have Lori Sugarman-Li, a fellow Certified Fair Play Facilitator and Family Coach, join me for a great conversation today.

We dig into the value of unpaid work. And if you are a parent, you are doing unpaid work. Even if parenting is not your only job. Not only is Lori a great advocate for starting the conversation around the value of this work, she has great ideas for how to get into Family Flow. This means making the invisible work more visible, getting your kids involved in “chores” in a way that makes sense to them, and shifting the energy around these undesirable tasks.

This is not easy work, and if you find yourself in need of support, I would love to see you in The Heartful Parent Academy! You can use code PODCAST to get your first month for just $7.

And finally, in the interest of keeping The Heartful Parent Podcast going strong, please share this episode with someone who might also need to feel valued in the unpaid work they are doing. A 5 star rating along with a review is also helpful, and greatly appreciated!

27 Jun 2023Ep 20 | Scary vs. Dangerous: Tips for Parenting in a Digital Age with Emily Cherkin, M.Ed00:45:30

Emily Cherkin, M.Ed. joins me on The Heartful Parent Podcast for a thought-provoking conversation about how we, as parents, may be worrying about the wrong thing(s)! Emily is former teacher who is now The Screentime Consultant, and her work focuses on understanding the challenges we face parenting through a digital age.

Emily and I dig into the difference between scary versus dangerous, and why this matters. We also talk about guidelines around when kids should get a phone and what we should really consider before we give them one. Parental controls and monitoring are one tool to keep kids safe online, but really, learning to be safe in the real world paves the way for the skills kids need to be safe online. Emily and I share what this type of “functionality” looks like in kids and teens before they can really navigate using technology to communicate and socialize.

As with all components of Heartful Parenting, no matter the age kids are when they become encompassed with technology as a way of life, we have to build trust and nurture our relationships to really make a difference for our kids. Emily and I talk about the connections that need to be made in order to tackle the anxiety and challenges that kids and teens are facing in today’s digital world.

07 May 2024Ep 65 | Parenting in the Digital Age: Navigating Screens and Connections with Joey Odom00:51:02

Have you ever been so distracted by your phone that you’ve missed important moments in your child’s life?

Today’s guest knows just what that feels like. Joey Odom joins me to talk about phone distraction and how it impacts our children’s lives.

Joey missed his son’s first soccer goal because he was looking at his phone, he had a realization: his phone was getting in the way of his best intentions as a Dad and husband. Since then, he has been on a journey to change his relationship with his phone so that he can change his most important relationships in life. He and friend, fellow Dad, and co-founder, Heath Wilson (co-founder of eVestment, a NASDAQ company), started Aro to help create a new generation of intentional families. Since launching in October 2022, Aro has been adopted by thousands of families across the country, helping parents model healthy habits for their kids, be more present with their families, and set their kids up for success with technology.

During our conversation we talked about:

  • Setting boundaries and prioritizing face-to-face interactions.
  • Tips for modeling positive behavior for children.
  • Balancing screens and connections in modern parenting.
  • Strategies for intentional parenting amidst digital distractions

So, grab your favorite beverage, settle in, and join us as we explore the intersection of technology and family life on this journey toward intentional parenting in the digital age.

16 May 2023Ep 14 | Keeping Your Kids Safe at Summer Camp with Cherie Benjoseph00:44:56

In preparation for a summer filled with fun and exciting summer camp opportunities, I am welcoming Cherie Benjoseph, LCSW on The Heartful Parent Podcast today. Cherie has worked as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for over 30 years in various school settings. Currently she works at the Director of National Outreach and Education for the Center for Child Counseling.

In 2009, Cherie founded the KidSafe Foundation, a non-profit with a focus on child sexual abuse primary prevention. KidSafe has many programs for parents and educators, but today we are talking about CampSafe which is geared towards providing strong foundational knowledge of child sexual abuse prevention and awareness within a  day camp or overnight camp setting.

Cherie shares with us two imperative conversations parents or caregivers need to have if you are sending your child to camp this summer. First are the questions you must ask the director of your child’s camp in order as part of the process of researching and vetting the camp you choose for your child. And second are the conversations to have with your kids, starting way in advance, so they know what to expect, what healthy boundaries might look like, and what options they have for protecting themselves and who to go to if something feels off.

Cherie and I share an absolute love for camp, and the experiences it can bring to our children’s lives. But it is our job to project all the children! So Cherie encourages us to not only have these tough conversations with the directors of the camps and help our kids feel prepared, but also make it the norm that camps participate in a program like CampSafe as part of their own process to keep kids safe at their camps.

Find out more about CampSafe, and the other programs offered by the KidSafe Foundation at their website: kidsafefoundation.org and connect with Cherie and the work she does for the Center for Child Counseling at centerforchildcounseling.org.

I’m talking with Susan Cottrell. Susan is an international speaker and passionate advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community. Susan shares her personal journey of accepting and supporting her LGBTQ children, despite the conservative teachings of her evangelical church. She discusses how her deep faith led her to deconstruct harmful religious teachings and embrace values of love, empathy, compassion, inclusion, justice, and kindness.

You’ll Learn:

0:27 Introduction to Today's Issue

1:47 Susan's Faith Journey

11:53 Deconstructing Faith

45:12 Bible as a Story, Not a Rule Book

46:09 Bible as a Vehicle for Oppression

47:06 Spreading Radical Love

47:51 Conclusion and Gratitude

Thank you so much for being with me today and for listening to this conversation. I know religion is not something I typically dive into on The Heartful Parent Podcast, but I felt like this was a conversation that was worth having here during Pride Month, and just in general as we, as those of use who do choose to love unconditionally and unequivocally work to protect all of us who are LGBTQIA+ from being vilified and being scapegoated as we move forward in the year 2024 and beyond.

And let us know how you’re celebrating Pride Month where you live!

28 May 2024Ep 68 | Navigating Divorce Peacefully with Kim Korven00:45:43

Today, I want to chat about something that might not be the picture-perfect family life we often imagine: divorce. We all envision a loving, committed partnership raising happy kids, but for many, that’s not the reality.

If you’re in a relationship that’s run its course or has turned negative, you might be wondering if staying for the kids is the right choice or how to move forward. I recently spoke with Kim Korven, who’s been through it all – a retired lawyer and judge, mom, divorcee, and judo coach. Kim’s approach to divorce is different. She doesn’t treat it as just a legal issue. Instead, she helps parents see themselves as the CEOs of their families, using divorce as a tool to improve relationships and help everyone thrive, even in tough situations like dealing with coercive control, narcissism, or mental health challenges.

We talked about:

  • Kim’s own divorce journey and how she kept her kids' well-being front and center.
  • The real impact of divorce on kids and how to create a healthy environment for them, even if it means ending a bad relationship.
  • Tips for communicating with a partner who might not be on the same page.
  • Making choices that honor everyone’s well-being. Divorce isn’t ideal, but sometimes it’s necessary.

Divorce isn’t ideal, but sometimes it’s necessary. Our conversation with Kim is packed with insights on how to navigate this tough time with your kids’ best interests at heart and maintain healthy communication. Even if divorce isn’t on your horizon, there’s a lot here about relationships and communication that can benefit anyone.

If you found this episode helpful, please subscribe, leave a review, and share it with anyone who might need Kim’s wisdom. New episodes drop every Tuesday. Until next time, stay heartful and intentional in your parenting and relationships.

Cheers,

Christy

Hey there, Heartful Parent listeners! In today’s episode, we’re diving deep into a topic that touches every single part of our lives as parents, partners, and professionals—effective time management. Now, before you roll your eyes and think, “Oh no, not another time management talk,” trust me, you’ll want to stick around for this one.

Time management can feel like an impossible dream, right? I get it! We’re all juggling so much, and sometimes it seems like planning is just another thing we *don’t* have time for. But today’s episode brings a refreshing perspective that I think you’re going to love!

I had the pleasure of speaking with the amazing Megan Sumrell, the CEO and founder of The Pink Bee. Megan’s a wife, mom, and business owner who truly understands the chaos of juggling it all. What’s really special about her approach? She’s not your typical productivity guru—Megan’s all about practical, down-to-earth strategies that work for everyone, whether you’re the super-organized type or, like many of us, just trying to keep your head above water.

In our conversation, Megan shares her wisdom on how to achieve work-life harmony (not just balance!) through smart time management, organization, and productivity systems. Her tips are *so* relatable and actionable, and the best part? Megan is fun, real, and someone you’d totally want to grab a glass of wine with after a long day.

Whether you’re a stay-at-home parent, working outside the home, or a grandparent, Megan’s advice is for everyone—even the busiest and most disorganized among us!

Key Takeaways:

  • Time management isn’t one-size-fits-all – Megan shares how her approach adapts to different lifestyles and needs, making it accessible for everyone.
  • Work-life harmony vs. balance – Megan explains the difference and why harmony is the goal.
  • Practical, doable tips – From systems that simplify your day to productivity hacks that even the busiest person can adopt.
  • Fun and relatable – Megan’s tips are realistic, grounded, and honestly just fun to hear!

Thanks for tuning in! I hope you enjoyed this conversation as much as I did. If you found this episode helpful, don’t forget to subscribe, rate, and leave a review—we love hearing from you. And as always, take care and keep being the heartful parent you are!

28 Mar 2023Ep 7 | Conscious Parenting from the Heart with Caitlin Escobar00:44:08

Today, I have the pleasure of having Cailtin Escobar, a certified Conscious Parent Coach, Positive Discipline Educator, and founder of Raising Parents Coaching on The Heartful Parent Podcast. Caitilin is dedicated to partnering with parents to find more joy and purpose in their parenting role through teaching researched-based parenting workshops and coaching in ways that empower and support parents with today’s complex world.

In this episode, Caitlin explains that when it comes to how we are as parents, Conscious Parenting is the WHY and Positive Discipline is the HOW. Caitlin and I get the chance to dig into how the approaches of Conscious Parenting and Positive Discipline go hand-in-hand. Caitlin touches on how these approaches can strengthen the relationships and truly make and repair connections with our kids.

Conscious parenting is going to help us understand our reactions and our triggers. And the best part is that Caitlin describes how to really apply these approaches in the moment, through the ups and downs of a day, and how to connect with ourselves in that moment too.

Caitlin shares a multi-step strategy to work through your internal triggers ––since Conscious Parenting is highly focused on healing our parental reactivity, which then allows us to access our Positive Discipline tools more easily..

She gives details on each of these five steps:

Step 1: Think of a new (realistic) response

Step 2: Visualize the triggering event

Step 3: Notice your trigger response & let it take over (within your visualization)

Step 4: Acknowledge, validate, and appreciate the response

Step 5: Practice your new response

25 Jul 2023Ep 24 | Enneagram: A Guide to Calm & Confident Parenting with Valerie Tih00:38:06

Today I have the pleasure of talking with Parent & Enneagram Coach, Valerie Tih on The Heartful Parent Podcast! She is the founder of JoyFULL Coaching and she frames her work around helping parents who feel frustrated by the gap between who they want to be as a parent and the day-to-day reality of parenting. Valerie transforms outdated parenting paradigms into research-based Positive Discipline frameworks based on the latest brain science, the Enneagram, and best practices.

Valerie and I have a lot of overlap with our work with Positive Discipline, but today we are talking about how your Enneagram number can begin to bridge how you show up in hard moments with the parent you want to be. Enneagram does more than tell you about your personality; when used properly, it can shed a lot of light on your strengths AND your “blindspots”. In this episode, Valerie explains all this and gives practical tips (and an acronym!) to help us become more calm and confident in our parenting.

28 Feb 2023Ep 3 | Survey Says: Our Youth Are In Crisis00:38:12

Today I am starting a conversation about our youth in crisis by presenting some of the findings of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey put out by the CDC on February 13, 2023. The report covers 5 areas, sexual behavior, substance use, experience of violence, mental health & suicidality, and new and emerging national data.

In regards to these 5 areas, today I will begin to cover:

  • What does this report mean?

  • What are the numbers telling us?

  • What might be the causes for concern based on the findings?

  • And most importantly, what can we do about it all as parents, educators, & policy makers?

Even though the Youth Risk Behavior Survey findings are focused on high school youth, the information is relevant to a much wider range of kids. High school does not happen in a vacuum--what do kids see & experience before these years that have impacted the findings?

As parents, partners, and professionals, we are already doing the best we can, but it is important to know more so we can do more. This is just the beginning of the conversation, so send your questions to me at podcast@theheartfulparent.com so we can keep digging into how to help *all* our kids!

23 Apr 2024Ep 63 | Fight the New Drug with Parker Hymas00:42:28

Hey Heartful Parents,

Today, I've got a guest on the show who's tackling a topic that's not always easy to talk about—pornography. Yep, I said it. It's a subject that often gets swept under the rug, especially when it comes to conversations with our kids or within our own relationships.

Let's face it, discussing porn can be uncomfortable, even controversial. But here's the thing: when we dig into the facts, the evidence, the science, things start to become clearer. And that's exactly what we're going to do today.

So, let me introduce you to our guest, Parker Hymas. Parker is with an organization called Fight the New Drug, a nonprofit that's all about raising awareness on the harmful effects of pornography using science, facts, and real-life stories.

Parker's got a knack for connecting with people and driving positive change. With his background in communications and his passion for community engagement, he's been spreading the word about Fight the New Drug to audiences far and wide.

I've been following the incredible work of Fight the New Drug for a while now, so when Parker reached out to chat about it on the podcast, I was thrilled. Look, I get it—this topic can make some folks squirm, especially if they've used porn themselves. But here's the deal: no shame, no judgment. Just important conversations.

Whether it's talking to our kids or navigating the waters of adult relationships, these conversations matter. And Parker's here to shed some light on it all.

So, stick around, parents,  You're in for a thought-provoking discussion filled with insights and research that might just change the way you think about porn.

Cheers,

Christy

14 May 2024Ep 66 | Parenting with Purpose: Insights from Trunnis Goggins00:34:30

Hey there, lovely listeners! Get ready for another episode of the The Heartful Parent Podcast. Today, we're joined by Trunnis Goggins, a parent, educator, and all-around awesome human being.

After the devastation of losing his oldest daughter, Trunnis slipped into a world of confusion and darkness. However, with soul-searching, he was able to rediscover his purpose and strive to help others deal with challenging and tragic situations arising from parenting and quite frankly everyday life. Trunnis now lives in Asheville North Carolina and is privileged to be with his oldest grandson who lost his mother the same time Trunnis lost his daughter.

Trunnis is pulling back the curtain on his journey through parenthood, sharing stories of raising a big family, navigating loss, and finding strength through it all. He's all about communication, teamwork, and embracing each child's unique path in life.

15 Aug 2023Ep 27 | Be Heartful & Mindful When Posting Pictures Online with Fareedah Shaheed00:38:39

We all love to share and it has become second nature to post that cute or funny picture of our kiddos, but it is time to pump the breaks and think twice. Today on The Heartful Parent Podcast, I welcome Fareedah Shaheed, an award-winning Internet Safety Expert, who is here to talk to us about the aspects of cyber security that parents need to be thinking about.

Fareedah’s background is in cyber security and threat intelligence, but her best advice comes from her own experiences in the online gaming world and noticing how what she sees people post on social media can threaten their family’s safety (even if you only have a handful of followers).

Fareedah and I dig into identifying the risks of posting certain types of photos or information online, the importance of modeling the type of behavior you want to see, and being intentional about not only what you are taking a picture of, but what else can be seen or gathered from the background of the photos you are posting.

There are 13 specific photos you should not post, which Fareedah shares in her FREE download. These photos fall into three main groups:

  • any photo that exposes your child in any way (diaper, bathing suit, bathtub, etc.)
  • vacation or location information specific photos
  • photos with specific personal/private information (birth announcement, school report card, etc.)

Get the list of photos and many other free resources at Fareedah’s FREE Resource Library. Connect with her at her website: cyberfareedah.com and find her on Instagram (@cyberfareedah) and YouTube youtube.com/CyberFareedah

19 Mar 2024Ep 58 | Youth in the Spotlight: Exploring the Harm of #Kidfluencer Culture with Casey O’Roarty & Amy Lang00:50:32

Putting kids on social media -- is it social behavior or exploitative BS? Well it depends. And I brought in two of my favorite fellow podcasters and parent coaches to talk all about it. I welcome Casey O’Roarty and Amy Lang back to The Heartful Parent Podcast today to talk about the #Kidfluencers movement and all the things that are wrong with this use of social media to exploit children.

This conversation is based on our joint outrage after reading the NY Times article “A Marketplace of Girl Influencers Managed by Moms and Stalked by Men.” And we’re talking about it today to help you navigate the right kind of conversations with your kid, tween, or teen around what is acceptable and “normal” on social media. We are reminding you how to stay curious and teach your kids to think critically about the “water they are swimming in.”

We also dig into where the “line” is and Casey even wonders if she’s crossed it in some of the work she’s done that has included sharing her kids’ struggles. Catch more with Casey and Amy on their podcasts: Joyful Courage Podcast and Birds+Bees+Kids

In order to put a stop to this type of exploitation and child sexual abuse, talk about this topic with people you know. Better yet, pass this episode along to get more people talking!

14 Nov 2023Ep 40 | Eliminating Mealtime Battles––Part 1 with Christine Muenz00:46:19

Do you have mealtime battles in your house?  Most parents do, because there are a lot of confusing resources out there, and because most of us got some messed up ideas about food from how we were raised.  So to dig into this, I have my good friend and mentor Christine Muenz on the podcast to share her deep wisdom.

Christine is a parenting educator, lactation educator, and an infant feeding specialist. She teaches parenting classes at hospitals in the Seattle area and lectures at conferences for professionals who work with families in the stages of pregnancy and postpartum. And she is joining me for a two-part conversation on eliminating mealtime battles. *SIGH OF RELIEF*

In this part of our conversation, Christine and I dig into the way we feed our children as infants and how this changes as kids grow and get older. And the decisions we make and the battles we pick can have unintended effects with our kids and in our families. Christine is not only the  ‘wisdom keeper’ on this topic, she offers a perspective that will truly change how mealtimes play out and help you focus on connection with your family.

Christine is beginning to have all sorts of new offerings, so keep checking back to her website to see what’s coming! christinemuenz.com

Come back in two weeks for the second part of this conversation. And if you need support in the meantime, reach out! I would love to hear from you chrisy@theheartfulparent.com or see you in The Heartful Parent Academy (use code PODCAST to get your first month for only $7).

Welcome to the Podcast, Jonas Keating! I’m so thrilled to have my husband, one of my very favorite people, on The Heartful Parent Podcast for this episode. He is such a good sport and truly a great podcast guest! He not only answers all my questions, we even have one from our six year old, which turned out to be the hardest question for both of us.

Jonas shares with us how parenting is different than he expected, his perspective on what makes our family work well, and what it is like being married to someone in the parenting space. He also shares his true north, what guides him as a dad and what he has learned about himself. Tiny spoiler, it’s his Harry Potter house, which also turns out to be his true north!

This is a special episode for me. It’s a little vulnerable to put my family out there this way, but it all comes from my true belief that we are not meant to do this alone. By sharing my parenting partner with you, I hope you get a glimpse into my support system. I’m here to support you, whether you have a parenting partner or not. You (& your partner) do not have to navigate your parenting journey alone.

13 Jun 2023Ep 18 | Conversations on Death & Dying for the Sandwich Generation with Maureen Kures00:44:12

Founder and CEO of Radiant Mourning, Maureen Kures joins me on The Heartful Parenting Podcast today. Maureen is on a mission to guide families to decide, document, and discuss their final chapter plans long before it is needed in order to bring a sense of peace to those who live on. As an End-of-Life Planning Facilitator and Doula, Maureen has witnessed the devastation that can occur when families haven’t’ had candid conversations with those who matter most. She knows it can be different with planning.

Because many of us are now part of the sandwich generation–caring for children and aging parents at the same time–Maureen and I dig into what the conversations should be and how to have them––both with aging parents and with children who may experience death as part of your family. All of this comes from a place of honoring those we love and their wishes. We also want to give our children a healthy outlook on all that surrounds end-of-life and give them the opportunity to ask questions and talk openly about a difficult subject.

You can get the conversation started with help from Maureen’s free starter guide, Does Speaking of Dying Scare You to Death? which you can download at startthetalknow.com. And you can learn more about End-of-Life planning and connect with Maureen as an End-of-Life Doula at both www.radiantmourning.com and www.gentlepassagedoulacollective.com.

02 May 2023Ep 12 | Tech Less & Talk More to Promote Digital Wellness with Dawn Wible00:43:46

Today on The Heartful Parent Podcast, I welcome Dawn Wible, a certified digital wellness educator and founder of Talk More. Tech Less. Dawn focuses her work on how digital wellness and safety go hand in hand. Her mantra is “if we’re not well we won’t be safe, and if we’re not safe we can’t be well”. She and I agree that our kids’ safety is dependent on their mental and physical well-being. Technology is a big part of our lives, so we need to learn how to use it to serve us, rather than have it dictate how we spend our time and the level of connection we have within our relationships.

Dawn and I dig into digital wellness––what it is and how it impacts our parenting. She also explains the 5 pillars of digital wellness and how to understand them better and use them to promote healthier digital well-being.

The 5 pillars are:

  1. Physical Wellness -  sleep, eye health, spine health, getting fresh air, and movement
  2. Mental Health - anxiety & disconnection
  3. Time – as it relates to our phone
  4. Healthy of our Relationships - in real life & on screens
  5. Ethics and Values - how digital platforms are designed and how we are using it

Dawn also shares the importance of modeling what digital wellness should look like as aligned with your family’s values. And she explains the impact that creating  good healthy phone habits in our homes help our families stay healthy AND safer.

Find out more about Talk More. Tech Less on their website talkmoretechless.com where you can get information and resources to support your family’s digital wellness. And connect with Talk More. Tech Less. on Instagram, Facebook, & LinkedIn.

01 Oct 2024Ep 86 | No Apology Needed: Navigating Motherhood & Career with Megan Whiteside01:01:45

What steps can you take to get comfortable with being successful in your career AND being a parent? Is it even possible to do both, and do it well? Are you ready to let go of mom guilt and stop comparing yourself to others?

In this episode of the Heartful Parent Podcast, I’m talking about it all with Megan Whiteside. Megan is a friend, a colleague, and a remarkable mom of four who is breaking down barriers for women in the law field.  I invited Megan on today to share her inspiring story of bringing her infant to two national legal conferences. But that is not all you’re getting in this episode.

Megan is unapologetically shattering norms and reshaping perceptions around working motherhood. She is sharing the importance of setting boundaries and finding the people who are “her people” while leaving the rest behind. Megan shares the importance of learning to name her core values and how thoughtwork was the big shift she needed to start finding fulfillment in both motherhood and her professional life––at the same time.

You will walk away from this episode feeling inspired and encouraged, and hopefully being able to find the same fulfillment that Megan shares.

If you could use some help with your core values, I’d love to support you with some parent coaching or see you in The Heartful Parent Academy, where your Values Trio is one of the first things we work on.

27 Feb 2024Ep 55 | We are NOT Meant to Parent Alone with Providencia Lopez00:45:21

You’ve heard me say it at the start of every episode: we were never meant to do this alone. Parenting, that is. Finding the support she needed was what saved this week’s guest’s relationship with her daughters and got her on a much better path in parenting. Providencia Lopez is a former client that I had the pleasure of working with when she found herself newly sober and in a very tough spot with parenting. She knew she needed help, and she did the right thing by reaching out to find it.

Providencia and I dig into the importance of true self-care, not just getting your nails done, but going deeper into what fills your cup so you’re able to show up for your kids. We also touch on how to build connection with your kids (and your partner if you have one) and how to truly repair when we’ve screwed up with our kids, our partner, or even the employee at Forever 21.

Providencia gets real and vulnerable in this episode, and I appreciate her willingness to share her journey so we can really share the message that we all need support. It is truly my pleasure that I got to be part of her parenting journey. She has come leaps and bounds since I first assigned her to hug her daughter as homework in her first coaching session.

If you need some support, reach out to me! I would love to hear from you christy@theheartfulparent.com or see you in The Heartful Parent Academy. It might just be the community of support that makes the difference for you in your parenting, partnering, or even your professional life.

28 Nov 2023Ep 42 | Eliminating Mealtime Battles––Part 2 with Christine Muenz00:44:10

We are back for the second half of the ‘mealtime battles’ conversation with my good friend and colleague Christine Muenz. If you missed part on, go check it out Eliminating Mealtime Battles––Part 1

In this episode, I’m firing all my feeding, food, and mealtime questions at Christine. And she offers her thought provoking perspective on how mealtimes can play out on a daily basis. She shares how some of the philosophies that we use to feed our infants can transfer to feed our toddlers, children, and teens. And she talks about how we can maybe improve the choices we make around food and our bodies can keep us rooted in mutual respect with our kids and connection with our families.

Since Christine is now officially a “Friend of the Pod”, you will definitely hear more from her in the future. In the meantime, keep track of her new offerings on her website christinemuenz.com

And I would love to hear from you! Drop a review or send me an email christy@thehearfulparent.com. And if you know another parent who has mealtime battles, and I’m guessing you can name a few, share part 1 and part 2 with them. We are not meant to do this alone!

08 Aug 2023Ep 26 | Strangers Aren't the Problem with Dr. Paul Renfro00:48:50

This is a continuation of the conversation from Episode 25: Heartful Parenting Practice: STOP Saying “Stranger Danger”. This week, I have author and professor Dr. Paul Renfro with me to share thought-provoking evidence in the harm of the phrase “Stranger Danger”. Dr. Renfro wrote the book Stranger Danger: Family Values, Childhood, and the American Carceral State which speaks to the history and notion of this phrase that we were taught (and possibly continue to teach our own children) in the interest of safety.

We dig into the details about how the phrase came about and why it is harmful to the practicality of keeping our kids safe. Dr. Renfro and I discuss perception versus reality in terms of how few strangers actually harm our children. In addition to the threat to children being much closer to home, the phrase Stranger Danger has also marginalized people of color and the LGBTQ population by perpetuating the idea that people in these groups are more likely to mean harm to children, which is 100% factually inaccurate.

Listen and share this episode of the podcast to help spread the message that there are better ways to promote safety with our children. The Heartful Parent Academy can give you a comprehensive approach to parenting from a place of love and connection. I would love to see you join us there! b

You might have fond memories of sleepovers as a child, I know I do! It seems that now, sleepovers are much more controversial, and with good reason. I’m not here to tell you if you should or shouldn’t let your child have a sleepover. Today on The Heartful Parent Podcast, I will help you weigh the benefits and the risks so you can make the decision that is right for you, your family, and your kiddo.

Then if you decide that the benefits outweigh the risks for your family, I’m giving you practical tips that can help you and your child be prepared. There are 3 key steps to implement if sleepovers will be a part of your child’s experience:

  1. Prepare your child.
  2. The conversation you should have with the other family/families involved.
  3. What to do (and not do) when you pick your child up & how to have a post-sleepover conversation with your kiddo.

I’m giving tips for all 3 steps. Brain and body safety is the goal, so let’s work together to make sure you have the tools you need.

If this conversation leaves you needing or wanting more, I would love to hear from you or have you join me in The Heartful Parent Academy. The Academy has all newly-developed content to support you in your parenting journey and the membership (which requires no long-term commitment) dives deeper into the Heartful Parenting Practices I touch on in the Podcast. 21 Nov 2023Ep 41 | Gratitude, Health, & Happiness00:34:41

If you celebrate, Happy Thanksgiving! Whether or not you celebrate, I’m still glad you are all here to dig into the benefits of inviting more gratitude into your life daily, weekly, and beyond.

In this episode, I’m giving you the numbers of how an active gratitude practice benefits your emotional and social wellbeing and helps you get the D.O.S.E. chemicals that benefit your overall physical health.

BUT not all gratitude practices are created equal! While even just listing things you are grateful for can benefit your overall health, today I’m sharing some ways to take your gratitude practice a little deeper. And I’m giving you some ideas of things you could do to help deepen the connection you have with your family by inviting more gratitude into your lives.

This conversation is a great example of the deep dives I do with The Heartful Parent Academy. 07 Mar 2023Ep 4 | Reconnecting With Our Youth with Sherra Grasser00:43:02

Today I continue the conversation about the findings of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey from the CDC which identifies that our youth are in crisis. Sherra Grasser joins me in the conversation today. Sherra is a Youth Empowerment Coach, Founder & Director of MePowerment Programs-Empowering Youth from the Inside Out. Her mission is to make an impact and advocate for the mental health of our youth.

Sherra and I talk about how our youth are growing up disconnected in a connected world. They are bombarded by outside influences, such as social media, peers, parents, and the lingering effects on their social experiences because of Covid.

Sherra gives us the top 4 reasons she believes the trends published in the CDC report are the way they are. She has great tips on HOW to talk to your kids about difficult topics and how to keep the conversation going when they “don’t know” what they are feeling or why they are feeling something. And she talks about the difference between feeling seen and being seen. And when kids feel seen, they stay more connected. Sherra and I agree that the good news is that reconnecting is actually simple, and Sherra gives some great practical tips to become more intentional in order to start reconnecting with your kids.

Find Sherra at www.mepowerment.org to connect with her for Youth Empowerment Coaching/Mentoring, which offers a space for human connection, difficult conversations and to nurture one’s authentic self through. You can also find her on Facebook (Sherra Grasser Youth Empowerment), on Instagram (@coachsherra), or on LinkedIn (@coachsherra).

Please share this episode with other parents who might also need some support –– Sherra and I both believe in the importance of finding the help you might need or your kids might need.

23 Jan 2024Ep50 | Getting Un-Stuck from Anger & Shame in Parenting with Emily Hughes00:43:31

Can you relate to feeling angry, exhausted, overwhelmed? I’m betting every parent has! And maybe you’ve even lost it on your kids or your partner. Cue the shame spiral. We’ve truly all been there, but we can’t let our shame get the best of us!

On this episode, I have the pleasure of talking about all things overwhelmed, angry, and exhausted with Emily Hughes, a Conscious Parent Coach, Somatic Therapist, and mom of two. She and I both share pretty vulnerable stories about times we’ve had all-out-rage just take over. Again, cue shame spiral. Like I said, we’ve ALL been there!

Here is the good part! Emily and I dig into not only when this happens, but why. She shares all about the role of shame and how it could be contributing to anger and reactivity in your parenting. And she also shares how we can get back into our bodies in these moments to begin to break that cycle. Emily also explains how getting clear on your values might explain some of the anger you are experiencing.

This is a great conversion for anyone who feels stuck in their angry, exhausted, and overwhelmed state and wants to get unstuck. And I walked away feeling so much more seen and understood, and much less alone in some of those tough emotions.

You can connect with Emily for more support or you can reach out to me! I would love to hear from you christy@theheartfulparent.com. If you sign up for my newsletter, you’ll get great resources and tips delivered right to your inbox each week! Sign up HERE.

My friend and colleague Jo Langford joins me on The Heartful Parent Podcast today! Jo is a dad, a Master’s-level therapist, an author, and a sex educator for tweens, teens and parents. He is here today to tell us all about his new editions of his Spare Me the Talk book series.

Spare Me 'The Talk' book covers

If you know a 12-22 year old, then you need to hear all about these books.. The books (along with Jo’s other work) focus on the “messes” that happen when you smash together adolescence, sexuality, technology and the world we live in. Jo sets out to give factual and relevant information in easily digestible chunks to the kids who are at this intersection in their lives. And I have to say, I love it!

Jo and I dig into not only what he has put into the new additions of his books, but also why these additional topics are so important. We talk about how much the world has changed in the last 10 years and why it's so hard to be a parent and a kid now.

You can find out more about Jo’s work to promote healthy, positive and safe sexual and social behavior can be found at his website: beheroes.net

13 Feb 2024Ep 53 | Don't Raise a Narcissist with Dr. Mary Ann Little00:41:46

Do you know any narcissists? If you do, I’m sure just reading or hearing that word triggers a reaction in you. Did you know there is actually healthy narcissism? Now, before you skip past this episode because of the word narcissism, please hear me when I say you will find the conversation in this episode more fascinating and applicable than you probably expect. I sure did.

Dr. Mary Ann Little is my guest for this episode, and she is a clinical psychologist with years of experience in private practice and has written books about parenting and children including the book we’re talking about today, Childhood Narcissism: Strategies to Raise Unselfish, Unentitled, Empathetic Children.  Who doesn’t want their children to be generous, well-rounded, and empathetic?!

Dr. Little and I dig into successfully developing the four structures in parenting that will protect against narcissism in your child. She also describes how to find moderation in your parenting with your child’s concept of self, emotional regulation, ability to accurately perceive, and positive modeling of love and relationships. So many good gems in this conversation.

If you would like to connect with Dr. Mary Ann Little, you can visit her website, drmaryannlittle.com, or find her on Social Media: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram

If you find yourself nodding along at any point in this episode, please share it with another parent who might find it useful. Then drop a rating and review so we can reach even more parents who might need support.

11 Jul 2023Ep 22 | Showing Up "Heartfully" for Our Teens with Casey O'Roarty00:49:27

Casey O’Roarty, Positive Discipline Lead Trainer and Coach joins me on The Heartful Parent Podcast today, and I’m thrilled to have her here! Casey’s work encourages parents of teenagers to discover the purpose of their journey, while also providing them with tools and a shift of mindset that allows them to deepen their relationships with themselves and their families.

Casey and I agree that our purpose is to foster open, heartful connection with our teens and young adult children. Casey and I dig into what to do, as parents, when our teens or young adult children are making choices we don’t like, are unsafe or dangerous, or have consequences they didn’t anticipate. It truly isn’t about preventing them from making such choices (it’s not possible!), but how to make sure they come to us when they do and help them think critically and problem-solve in these situations.

Casey gives tips on how to “stay deep” in curiosity, what questions to ask and not to ask. She also guides us to come from a place of neutral and how to practice this skill before we need it.

14 Feb 2023Ep 1 | Welcome to The Heartful Parent Podcast00:26:37

Welcome, welcome, welcome! In this intro to The Heartful Parent Podcast, you hear from me, Christy Keating, about my journey becoming a parent, what that meant for my partnership and professional life, and how all of this brought me to become a parenting coach and supporter of other parents by creating The Heartful Parent Collective.

My journey may be relatable to you as a parent; after becoming a mom and feeling the pressure of dual roles, I decided to make a change. I left my work of 20 years as a prosecutor to create a space for parents to feel supported and help partners learn how to build equity in relationships. Now I am a Certified Parent Coach, Positive Discipline Educator, Certified Gottmann Instructor, Certified Fair Play Faciliator, and my I serve on the board of the National Coalition to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse and Explotation.

My journey is a bit different than some of my amazing colleagues in the parenting space, and I hope you will find both that journey and my perspective helpful to you as you live, learn, and grow as a parent.  I’m a lawyer, I’m a mom, and I’m a coach. I want to help you explore how taking care of yourself and your relationships, using positive discipline techniques, and empowering your kids with brain and body safety tips can all be done in a heartful way.

My approach is real (some swear words included!) and I am a parent coach who admits I don't get it right all the time. But I am here to help you bring the love, joy, and connection back to your family. I am so happy you are here and have some great guests planned to really make The Heartful Parent Podcast one of your go-to resources for real talk about parenting, partnering, and our professional lives..

18 Apr 2023Ep 10 | Play & Our Mental Health––Why Our Kids & Teens are Struggling00:53:59

This week on The Heartful Parent Podcast, I bring you a thought-provoking conversation with Dr. Peter Gray, a research professor of psychology and neuroscience at Boston College. Dr. Gray has conducted and published research in behavioral biology, developmental psychology, anthropology, and education.

Dr. Gray and I focus this conversation on the play of children and how impactful play (or lack of play) is on the mental health of our children and teens. We dig into how the decrease of casual play is directly related to the increase in depression and anxiety in children and teens today.

Dr. Gray discusses how children need to develop in 3 key areas to have their basic psychological needs met: autonomy/decision-making, competence in things they care about, and a feeling of connectedness to other people. All 3 of these key areas are developed for children through play.

Dr. Gray shares ideas of what some parents and professionals have already done to close the widening gap in play and independent activity and what parents can do right now to begin to make changes. He also shares how to tap into resources from Let Grow (letgrow.org) which is the nonprofit that he works with to incorporate mixed-age, unstructured play back into schools and communities.

Find Dr. Gray on Facebook, and be sure to check out Dr. Peter Gray’s most recent article that was published in the Journal of Pediatrics. You can also find more of his articles and research on his website petergray.org and from his book Free to Learn

Please rate, review, subscribe, and share this episode with other parents who may be looking find ways to make an impact on the high rates of anxiety and depression that our kids are facing by implementing these ideas from Dr. Peter Gray as well as other topics I have covered on The Heartful Parent Podcast.

02 Apr 2024Ep 60 | The Family Jewels with Nancy Balin00:51:17

April's here, and you know what that means - Testicular Cancer Awareness month!

So, for our latest episode of The Heartful Parent we're diving deep into a story that'll hit you right in the feels.

I had the privilege of chatting with Nancy Balin, who wears two hats: she's the Executive Director of The Family Jewels Foundation and, lucky for me, a good friend. Together, we unpacked her stepson Jamieson’s journey through Testicular Cancer—and trust me, it's a rollercoaster.

Nancy doesn't hold back - she gets real about the importance of catching this stuff early. We're talking about missed diagnoses, delayed treatment, and how it all made a difference for Jamieson's prognosis. And hey, we mix in a bit of gallows humor because life's too short not to laugh, right?

But in all seriousness, we're sending out a vital message: talk about this stuff! With your kids, your pals, or anyone with a pair of jewels. Early detection saves lives, plain and simple.

So, grab your tissues (you'll need 'em), and let's talk about the family jewels with Nancy Balin.

-Christy

She is here to help us use a combination of scientific research with wellness and self-care to promote non-toxic living in our homes. As the owner of Evidence-Based Mommy, she focuses her work on helping families thrive in an attainable way.

Dr. Radford and I dig into the places (and things) in our lives where our babies and kids might be exposed to toxic chemicals. She also explains why some of the things to watch out for are more dangerous to kids than adults. And she gives some great practical tips on how to make a shift towards cleaner living if you are on a budget and the all-organic-all-the-time idea is not a good fit for your family.

You can find out more about all of Dr. Radford’s work and her offerings for families, mothers, and breastfeeding moms on her website  evidence-basedmommy.com. 27 Aug 2024Ep 81 | Unlock Your Teens Potential with Dr. Melanie McNally00:44:27

In this episode, I’m thrilled to introduce you to Dr. Melanie McNally. We crossed paths a few months ago through mutual contact, and from our very first conversation, I knew we were on the same page about how to best support parents and their teenagers. But here’s the thing—while Dr. McNally’s work focuses on parents of tweens and teens, there’s a ton of value here for parents with younger kids too. We talk a lot on this show about parenting with the end in mind, and this episode is a perfect example of why that’s so important.

17 Oct 2023Ep 36 | Up Close & Personal with Israeli Mom, Lihi Netzer00:39:40

My friend and colleague, Lihi Netzer joins me on the podcast today. Lihi is a fellow Positive Discipline Educator and Parent Coach. She focuses her work on pre-teens and teens struggling with social emotional challenges. Today, Lihi is here for a different reason.

Lihi lives in Tel Aviv, Israel and she is sharing her personal account of living and parenting through the events that happened in Israel on October 6 & 7, 2023. Lihi not only shares her story, but also talks about parenting her own 10 & 13 year olds during a very scary time. All of this through the lens of her expertise as a Parent Coach and a Life Coach for teens and pre-teens.

Lihi’s story and perspective are inspiring. She talks about strength versus resilience. She speaks about how to secure the connection with your kids before the hard conversations can even begin. And she gets very raw and real about what it was like during and after the attacks, as a person, as a parent, and as someone who supports other parents and teens.

16 Jan 2024Ep 49 | What the HECK is Sugar Dating?! with Casey O'Roarty & Amy Lang00:43:06

Sugar Dating?? Have you heard of this? If you have a teen, tween, young adult, or someone who is going to grow into one, you’ll want to hear this! My good friends and colleagues, Amy Lang and Casey O’Roarty, and I are talking about something just a little disturbing today, and that is the concept of Sugar Dating.

We dig into what it is exactly, how it is being facilitated through the internet, why adolescent brains are NOT equipped to really understand the reality of this, and finally how and when to talk to your kids about these types of topics. Even if it’s not sugar dating, we can’t wait until our kids hit their late teen years to begin these conversations.  We have to start framing how they think about sex and relationships much earlier.

We cannot control (unfortunately) what they think and the actions they will ultimately take, but we CAN ask the right questions in order to help start framing how they think about sex and relationships. Casey, Amy, and myself are telling you what questions to ask and when to start asking them so you can pave the way for your teen/tweens’ underdeveloped brains to THINK about things like how sugar dating fits into the picture of a healthy relationship.

Quick disclaimer: This is an episode that aired on Casey O’Roarty’s Joyful Courage Podcast in December of 2023. It is such an important topic and great conversation, I decided to share it here too.

Hey, friends and podcast listeners! Welcome back to another episode of the Heartful Parent Podcast. I'm so excited to be here with you today.

If you've been listening for a while, we don't just discuss parenting here. As I always say, we wear a lot of hats—we're people, partners, professionals, and so much more. That's why I love exploring various topics on the pod.

This week, I'm particularly thrilled to introduce someone truly inspirational: my friend, colleague, mentor, and teacher, Kristi Rible. Kristi is the founder and CEO of The Human Group and is dedicated to humanizing the workplace by preparing leaders for a future that demands flexibility, empathy, trust, connection, and psychological safety. She champions a diverse, equitable, and inclusive representation of our collective humanity.

Kristi's international leadership experience spans over 25 years, covering technology and consumer products in public and startup ventures across the US, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. She is a fierce advocate for the advancement of women, which is how I met her through her Stanford course, "Motherhood and Work." She teaches an incredible class once a year, and it's open to continuing ed students. It is conducted remotely so that you can join from anywhere.

Kristi holds an impressive array of credentials, including an MBA in International Business from Thunderbird and Arizona State University, a BA in African Studies and Classical Archaeology from Franklin and Marshall College, and Executive Certifications in Organizational Gender Balance from INSEAD, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion from Cornell, Executive Coaching from UC Berkeley, and the Fair Play Method.

In today's conversation, Kristi and I dive into the power of language, the modern movements and setbacks affecting parents, mothers, and women in particular, and so much more. I'm super excited to share this enlightening discussion with you.

So, without further ado, let's dive into my conversation with Kristi Rible.

14 Mar 2023Ep 5 | Unpacking the Emotions of Parenthood with Wendy Sloneker00:38:52

Today I have  the pleasure of having Wendy Sloneker from Heart Healing From Loss on the Heartful Parent Podcast. Wendy is a Grief Coach & Specialist who helps people suffering from loss to connect and reclaim a sense of aliveness. Wendy’s coaching work is informed by the Grief Recovery Method, The Life Coach School, and David Kessler's Grief Educator program and is LGBTQI informed.

There are many, many life events that can bring about feelings of grief or loss, including many on the journey of parenting. There are life changes, expected and unexpected milestones, big and small transitions, and a constant need to manage emotions, both our’s and our kids’.

I find Wendy’s work as a Grief Coach extremely relevant to what we go through as parents. Today she and I talk about the difference between being an emotion and feeling an emotion, the importance of being present, and the “how to” of emotion management and productive self-talk.

Wendy and I also discuss how parenting is FULL of difficult emotions, and change is a constant companion in parenting. Wendy’s work comes into play because even good changes can require us to navigate feelings of loss.

Check out Wendy’s Podcast Heart Healing From Loss. And find more about Wendy and her work at her website wendysloneker.com. You can also find her on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram.

And reach out to me at podcast@theheartfulparent.com to keep the conversation going.

09 Jan 2024Ep 48 | Building Your Village with Mara Berrios & Mayna McVey01:04:52

Parenting is hard, and I strongly believe we are not meant to do it alone. In this episode of The Heartful Parent Podcast, Mara Berrios and Mayna McVey join me for a powerful conversation about the reality and challenges that come with parenting a child with a rare condition and/or with special needs.

Mayna’s nine year old daughter is diagnosed with Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis (CRMO) and Mara’s four year old son is diagnosed with Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS) and also, more recently, has been identified on the autism spectrum.

Mara and Mayna share their journeys to diagnoses for these conditions with their kiddos. They also talk about all the emotions that need a place and some space in parenthood, including loneliness, grief, joy at odd times, and rage.

I have had the absolute pleasure of working with both these moms in The Heartful Parent Academy, and I am so grateful they are sharing their stories and how they build their village to be able to move through each of their difficult parenting journeys.

If you are in a place where building a village could help you with some of your challenges as a parent, with your partner, or in your professional life, I would love to see you in the Academy! Use code PODCAST to get your first month for only $7

30 Jan 2024Ep 51 | Heartful Parenting Practice: Showing Up with the 4 S’s00:35:02

Most of us wonder what we can do to raise happy, successful kids; the answers aren’t always obvious or easy!

In this solo episode, we are digging into what the research shows about raising securely attached kiddos who thrive socially, emotionally, and cognitively from preschool through adulthood.

Not surprisingly, perhaps, the answer starts with us: how we show up is key.

To help parents do that well, we’re talking today about the 4 S’s, which were developed through the brilliant work of Drs. Dan Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson .

The 4 S’s are a beautiful framework for thinking about what’s important and how we show up,  and provides parents with some clear, concrete strategies for ensuring that we are parenting with presence and connection.

We can all help our children feel Safe, Seen, Soothed, and Secure; I’m sharing why it’s important, how to do it, and some successes and learning moments for me as a mom.

As always, I would love to support you. If you need help with the 4 S’s or anything else in parenting, please reach out christy@theheartfulparent.com or come see how The Heartful Parent Academy can give you the support and sense of community you might need.

I love Halloween! We get to dress up and pretend. It's great for building community and connecting with our neighbors. If you celebrate, it is a lighthearted, low prep holiday. And… I’m all about safety, so let’s talk about safety on Halloween.

However, I bet my list will surprise you! I’m not going to tell you to inspect your kids' candy or follow them around the neighborhood. I’m going to explain the three main myths around Halloween safety and give a couple practical tips that will help you have fun and stay safe.

So, let’s bust some Halloween myths and talk about what we need to do to ACTUALLY keep our kids safe on Halloween.

23 May 2023Ep 15 | A Heartful Approach to Financial Literacy with Jon Alvarado00:33:56

Today, Jon Alvarado, the founder of Teach Financial Literacy joins me on The Heartful Parent Podcast to talk about financial literacy and how to understand it enough to talk to our kids about it. And who would have guessed, but his approach to financial literacy goes hand-in-hand with Heartful Parenting!

Jon speaks about how drastically the financial landscape has changed in the last 20-25 years. There are options for our kids (and us) now that didn’t even exist 20 years ago! So he is here to help us reframe not only how we view money and wealth, but also to help us get the conversation started with our kids. Jon encourages us to think about how to leverage money rather than start conversations with the limitations of money. He also explains how to come into the conversations with our kids, teens, and young adult children in a way that fosters love and connection.

Jon is sharing a free resource with you, Increase Your Child’s Lifetime Earning Potential, and you can find that download HERE [free download]. 21 Feb 2023Ep 2 | Positive Discipline with Dr. Jane Nelsen00:36:16

Today I’m welcoming a very special guest, Dr. Jane Nelsen! Jane is the co-founder of the Positive Discipline Association, a worldwide training program that has certified thousands of Positive Discipline Facilitators in 88 countries (I am one of them!).

The original book, written in 1981, was the product of Jane’s deep gratitude for the changes she was able to make as a parent of 7 children after learning the philosophy of Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs in a college class in Child Development and Family Relations. Since that time, Jane has authored or co-authored many books, tool cards, and training manuals.

Today, Jane and I talk about how positive discipline came to be. We talk about the fundamentals of positive discipline and how punishment and praise are not a part of the PD philosophy. And we also talk about some of the tools that the positive discipline philosophy offers to parents and how this approach relates back to “Heartful Parenting”.

Making connections is the key to bring “heartfulness” into your parenting, your partnering, and your work. After listening to my conversation with Jane, you will walk away with some really specific tips you can use right away to start connecting in a more meaningful way with your kids.

It was such a treat to have Dr. Jane Nelsen on The Heartful Parent Podcast and I hope you find this conversation as inspiring to listen to as it was for me to be in conversation with Jane.

02 Jul 2024Ep 73 | Postive Parenting with Reem Raouda00:38:05

Hi Friends,

If you've listened to the podcast for any period of time, you've heard me talk about positive discipline and relationship and the importance of parenting in a different way than we were likely parented and we're going to dig into that and even more detail today with my guest, who I'm so thrilled to introduce you to Reem Raouda

Reem is a certified conscious parenting coach certified through Dr. Shafali Sabari's program, and she is the parent of a strong willed child and the founder of the Connected Discipline Method, which is a coaching program for parents of strong willed children. And what she and I really dig into in this conversation is discipline and what does discipline look like when we are not coming at parenting from an authoritarian sort of traditional approach, but what, how we do it or what discipline looks like, how we think about discipline when we are being more conscious, intentional, gentle, positive parents.

In this episode you’ll learn

0:27 Introduction to Positive Parenting

1:23 Reimagining Discipline

6:37 Common Parenting Mistakes

10:58 The Importance of Connection

11 Apr 2023Ep 9 | Supporting Emotional Regulation with Art with Jocelyn Fitzgerald00:40:39

Today I am welcoming Jocelyn Fitzgerald, a board-certified art therapist and EMDR consultant. Jocelyn focuses her work on inviting others to engage in a more authentic, awakened, connected, and creative life. She believes in a supportive and therapeutic approach that provides nurturing feedback to help clients address personal life challenges effectively.

In this episode, Jocelyn and I dig into what mindfulness is (it can be simpler than you might think) and how to incorporate both mindfulness and art into your daily routines. Jocelyn shares some really practical tips on how kids, teens, and parents can easily start practicing some mindfulness and art therapy.

Jocelyn also shares her expertise on EMDR therapy and how it can help kids and teens with issues that parents often don’t even realize have caused trauma with their kids. EMDR and art therapy actually go hand-in-hand, and Jocelyn shares some of her approaches within her practice and the successes she has seen with her child and teen clients.

Jocelyn has some really fantastic resources, including her book Colorful Place: Mindful Story and Art for Kids and the Emotional Regulation for Kids posters she talks about during this episode. 30 May 2023Ep 16 | "Safe" Adults Aren't Always Safe: Lessons from the Latest Clergy Scandal00:19:47

On this episode of The Heartful Parent Podcast, I am challenging you join me in taking a stand and truly making a difference to prevent child sexual abuse.

It is time to start asking questions to ALL the adults and organizations that are involved in our children’s lives. And it is time to teach our children about 3 very important forms of Safe Boundaries so they have the knowledge and the power to be safe, happy, and whole.

A great place to start is Episode 14: Keeping Your Kids Safe at Summer Camp with Cherie Benjoseph to get some great information about the questions you need to ask and the conversations you need to have to keep your kids safe. (The information Cherie gives us can apply to many situations ––not just summer camp!)

This is a sensitive topic, but it is important. So please listen, share, and reach out if you need help or support. You can email me christy@theheartfulparent.com. You can also get resources from me by signing up for my newsletter

26 Dec 2023Ep 46 | Emotional Intelligence, for Ourselves & Our Kids with Dr. Joanne Light00:38:59

Did you know that emotional intelligence, over IQ, is more predictive of success in careers and relationships? There are four important elements of emotional intelligence, and my guest today, Dr. Joanne Light, is going to dig into each of them.

Joanne is an Parent Empowerment coach along with being a mother and grandmother. She is also a retired college administrator and counselor with experience in education, counseling, and life coaching. She has a lot of insight and a great perspective on reframing how we’re thinking about and incorporating emotional intelligence with our kids and teens.

My conversation with Joanne centers around what we mean, exactly, when we say ‘emotional intelligence’, what the four elements of emotional intelligence are, and how to use what we know about emotional intelligence to raise competent, contributing, compassionate children into adults. The theme of wanting something versus being willing to do it also runs throughout our conversation.

01 Aug 2023Ep 25 | Heartful Parenting Practice: STOP Saying "Stranger Danger"!00:19:01

“Stranger Danger!” –– We all learned it and you may have taught it to your kids in the interest of keeping them safe, but it doesn’t! The danger of abduction or kidnapping is actually very low (come back next week for more on that with Dr. Paul Renfro). In the meantime, I’m sharing with you why the phrase “Stranger Danger” needs to be completely eliminated from our lexicon and what we should be teaching our kids instead to be safe.

This includes 3 important points:

  • Kids do not view strangers the same way adults do
  • It is actually dangerous for kids to be afraid of all strangers
  • 93% of child sexual abuse occurs at the hands of someone you know; not a stranger

We do need our kids to be savvy and smart to be safe, not afraid! There are tools to help and I’m sharing what to teach instead of Stranger Danger.

This Heartful Parenting Practice is one of many valuable tools in The Heartful Parent Academy. There are 13 core modules to give you the tools you need on your parenting journey. The membership (which requires no long-term commitment) also comes with all the course work, community support, and additional support from me. 02 Jan 2024Ep 47 | Recipe for a Good Life00:39:02

New Year's resolutions are not really my thing, but I do like a reset around this time of year. So as we start 2024, I’m asking these questions (for myself and for you):

What do you want for yourself, as a parent, professional, a friend, a human?

What do you want for your partnership (if you’re parenting with a partner)?

What will make 2024 feel like a success to you?

And what are you willing to do to get the things you want?

With these questions in mind, I offer you my ingredients that make up my Recipe for a Good Life.  Some of these are my own gems of wisdom and some I got from other people who have positively impacted my own life. Just like with any new recipes you try, you might make some tweaks or changes, but this is a good place to start.

Happy New Year!

If you are finding yourself struggling with how to build a Recipe for a Good Life, I would love to support you. Reach out to me christy@theheartfulparen.com or consider joining The Heartful Parent Academy. It can be a great place to find the support that will help you have that good life.

12 Dec 2023Ep 44 | Shine Your Light with Ed Gerety00:51:46

We want our kids to follow their dreams, explore their passions, and show gratitude. But if you’ve ever tried talking to your teens about these topics, or asked questions to guide their thinking, it may not have landed as well as you’d hoped.

So how do we teach these things to our teens and make sure it sticks? Inspirational Author, and Podcast host, Ed Gerety, has some valuable insight into how to reach our teens with these life lessons. Ed is sharing some of the gems from his book Shine Your Light: Navigate Your Way to a Life You Love

Ed’s book frames a thought provoking conversation, gratitude, kindness, self-confidence, goal setting, and staying curious with our teens. Ed encourages us to lead by example, and shine our light on these values. By doing so, we make space to invite more of each of them into our lives, instead of getting a classic eye roll or “I don’t know” from our teens.

Connect with Ed on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and his website

I hope you’ll share this episode with fellow parents. We are not meant to parent alone, and by sharing valuable information we can support each other. If you are in a place where some one-on-one coaching or The Heartful Parent Academy membership could be the support you need, please reach out! 04 Jul 2023Ep 21 | An Ode to Imperfection00:24:16

I’m getting real with you today on The Heartful Parent Podcast! I’m sharing a personal story about a [very recent] time I didn’t use the techniques of Positive Discipline––instead I let my anger get the best of me. Instead, I spoke to my daughter from a place of fear, frustration, and disbelief; I let the imperfect human side of me win out over the so-called “parent expert” side of me.

BUT, it’s not all bad! My relationship with my kid and my ability to *tolerate* myself were both repaired fairly quickly, which is why I’m sharing this story with you today. I’m digging into the 3 reasons why the repair happened quickly and successfully, and that part does go back to the elements of Positive Discipline that have laid a strong foundation within my parenting and my family.

If you would like to learn more about how you can begin to implement Positive Discipline into your own parenting, we would love to see you in The Heartful Parent Academy! We dig deep into so many useful tools including the 4Rs of Recovery that I mention in today’s episode.

06 Feb 2024Ep 52 | Improving Your Relationship with Your Space with Patricia Lohan00:41:01

Did you know that feng shui is the art of creating a harmonious and healthy home? You might be a skeptic, and that is okay. But if you stop and think about it, your relationship with your space (home, office, bedroom, etc) impacts everything.

Maybe it’s hard to relax with a lot of clutter. Maybe you can’t unwind in your bedroom because it’s also your office. Maybe your kitchen table is full of kids’ homework and papers to look over. All of this is impacting the energy of your day to day routines.

Feng Shui Expert Patricia Lohan is my guest today and she is sharing how to bring harmony into our homes and enhance our relationships by embracing a few new techniques within your spaces. In this episode, Patricia and I dig into how the flow of your home impacts your overall energy and atmosphere.

Patricia gives us a few practical recommendations for how to begin to feng shui your kids’ room, your main living areas, and your bedroom. And she gives three very doable suggestions for how to truly shift the energy in your home right away. Hey Heartful Parents,

As we wrap up April, I wanted to share a fun topic: Using Music in Parenting. Today’s guest, Samantha Foote is a board-certified music therapist that explores the transformative role of music in parenting.

During our conversation we talk about:

  • Crafting emotion-based songs using GarageBand
  • Creating playlists for different emotion states
  • Using Drum talks to facilitate non-verbal communication

Samantha also focuses on how the power of music can ease transition between activities and connecting with neurodivergent children.

Throughout the conversation, Samantha discusses the importance of prioritizing connection over correction in parenting. Her personal stories underscore the profound impact music can have on fostering emotional awareness and family harmony.

For more insights and resources, visit Samantha's website, https://www.boisemusictherapycompany.com/ and tune in to her podcast, "Every Brain is Different."

26 Sep 2023Ep 33 | Dealing With Disappointment (& Uncomfortable Shoes)00:30:28

I’m getting raw and real with you again today. I’m sharing a story that while, yes, it’s a first world problem, it was also an opportunity for self-reflection. It was brought about by an extremely disappointing weekend.  And disappointment is something our kids feel too, even when we don’t totally agree with them.

Often, it is necessary to make space for feeling all the feelings, for us and our kids. In my case, it was uncomfortable, but quite necessary, to just let it play out–to give myself space to feel my feelings.. It can be equally uncomfortable to watch our kids deal with tough emotions, but it is necessary for them to have the space to feel their feelings and let them play out too.

So my invitation for you today is to join me in some self-reflection. When unpleasant feelings or emotions come up for us, how do we handle it? And when they come up for our kiddos, how do we handle it and/or help them handle it?

Are you in a place where you could use some support as you navigate parenting, partnering, and your professional life? Sign up to get resources from me delivered right to your inbox!

And since I strongly believe we should not do this alone, please share any episode of The Heartful Parent Podcast with two people you know. We can spread the word on Heartful Parenting and support each other in the process.

I am so happy to welcome Dr. Mandy Sanchez on The Heartful Parent Podcast today. Dr. Sanchez is Program Coordinator for Culture Reframed, an international non-profit organization that is focused on addressing the public health crisis of the digital age: pornography. Dr. Sanchez’s role with Culture Reframed focuses on expanding, developing, and ensuring high quality, comprehensive, impactful programming for parents and adults who are influential in children’s and teens’ lives.

She is here to share the shocking truth about the connection between social media and the gaming world with pornography and the porn industry. It is a big eye-opener to hear her talk about what is actually happening on social media platforms and how much it is all connected to the porn industry in some way.

All of this feels really overwhelming and, as parents, we feel so powerless! So how do we protect our kids!? Dr. Sanchez is here to help! She teaches us as parents to educate ourselves so that we have the confidence to have the tough conversations with our kids.

She also points us to the FREE resources provided by Culture Reframed that will tell you HOW to have those guided conversations with your kids. 26 Mar 2024Ep 59 | Uncovering Your Joy with Siris Raquel Rivas-Verdejo00:44:01

We hear the term self-care a lot, even I talk about it in the work I do with parent coaching. How can self-care really help us be better parents? My conversation today with Siris Raquel Rivas-Verdejo gives us a glimpse into a world of how to prioritize joy and self-care, framed around her experience of growing up with two siblings with special needs.

Siris is a Family-Child coach, and she does work around the role of communication in building strong family relationships and managing the day-to-day within our family unit. She challenges us to use all of our senses when finding things that bring us joy (which is a form of self-care!), and teaching our kids to do the same. Siris and I also dig into not just communication styles, but how kids communicate with their energy and nonverbal cues.

06 Jun 2023Ep 17 | Overwhelmed & Underwater: The Mental Load with Laura Danger00:48:19

This episode is all about the mental load and we have Laura Danger with us today on The Heartful Parent Podcast to talk about it. Laura is an Educator, Advocate, and Fair Play Facilitator. She creates educational content in an effort to create a more equitable world. She is passionate about domestic equity, the value of domestic labor and how empowerment out in the world starts with empowerment at home.

Laura and I dig into the reasons that contribute to our mental load, that can often burden one parent more than the other, and the reasons why this has become the norm in the world we live in today. We are both Fair Play Facilitators and use the work of Eve Rodsky to support parents in the division of labor and domestic equity within their family structure.

Laura tells us the basics of Fair Play and how this framework can ease the burden of the mental load on one parent. She also shares her own experience of why holding her boundaries with herself and her partner were finally “worth it”.

Follow Laura on Instagram @thatdarnchat for some real and relatable content about parenting and partnering. And watch for her book No More Mediocre to hit the shelves soon!

04 Apr 2023Ep 8 | Growing in Our Leadership at Home & at Work with Teri Schmidt00:43:15

On this episode of The Heartful Parent Podcast I have the pleasure of chatting with Teri Schmidt, the founder and director of Stronger to Serve Coaching & Teambuilding.

Teri loves supporting female leaders to gain the clarity and confidence they need to unleash potential, drive team performance, and make their workplaces and communities more compassionate and just.  Using her 25+ years of coaching, leadership, and performance improvement experience in the corporate and nonprofit sectors, Teri excels at turning overwhelm into impact.

She hosts the Strong Leaders Serve podcast (formerly the Moms that Lead podcast) which aims to support working moms who excel in many of the people skills necessary for success in today’s economy. Through her podcast and associated leadership coaching, she helps women gain clarity, confidence, and connection so that they can share their unique talents in the workplace, community, and at home.

Teri and I chat about her 3-part framework––Ground, Grow, Give—as it ties into my mission of supporting parents through their partnerships and professional lives to build love and connection within all relationships.

Not only does Teri introduce us to her framework, she describes how to learn and reflect within each stage of the spiral to find fulfillment at work and at home. We dig into how each of the components can apply to parenting, partnering, and our professional lives.

If you are ready to begin the work of finding your leadership voice, Teri invites you to explore more about the Ground phase of her framework through her workbook that will help you  identify your strengths, values, and passion. Get your free download HERE

21 Mar 2023Ep 6 | Heartful Parenting Practice: Family Meetings00:40:10

Today I’m sharing one of my favorite tools of Positive Discipline, and the first Heartful Parenting Practice episode––the Family Meeting! If that strikes fear or anxiety in you, you are not alone. The family meeting you might be thinking of may have been full of lectures and yelling. BUT the Family Meeting I describe is NOT that; it is a fun way to connect with your family. It focuses on building community, building connection, and practicing cooperation.

There are many ways to set up this type of family meeting for your own family, SO I cover the four essential components of a Family Meeting rooted in Positive Discipline and how to do each of these parts.

They are:

  1. Compliments & Appreciations
  2. Scheduling
  3. Problem Solving
  4. Something fun & plan for family fun during the week

And then I give you many variations to add in as needed or wanted for your own family. My hope is that after today, you can walk away ready to put your first (or next) family meeting on the calendar and start connecting, or reconnecting with your family.

05 Dec 2023Ep 43 | Parenting & Leading with Courage with Teri Schmidt00:39:27

Teri Schmidt defines leadership as “courageously using your talents as a way for others to courageously use theirs”, and I have to say that is a nice picture of leadership. Teri is a repeat guest on The Heartful Parent Podcast, and she is back to not only define servant leadership, she is here to teach us how to become strong leaders.

Imposter syndrome is real, and the world has unfortunately conditioned us to think of leaders a certain way. Teri reframes this for us, and explains how our identities can become tied up into the “Drama Triangle”. In this representation, we can get a little bit stuck in the role of hero/rescuer, villain, and/or victim.

Teri and I dig into misinterpretations of leadership and how to recognize and function within the role that we gravitate towards. There are so many parallels between taking a leadership role in the workplace and parenting. We want you to be able to tap into your talents to excel at both.

18 Jul 2023Ep 23 | Teaching Comprehensive Consent with Sarah Casper00:37:47

Teaching our children about consent can be one of the “awwww…I know!” conversations with our kids, but it doesn’t have to be! Today, Consent Educator and founder of Comprehensive Consent, Sarah Casper joins me on The Heartful Parent Podcast to share her story of how she got into the work of teaching consent (trust me, it’s a totally unexpected reason!). And Sarah shares how she uses social-emotional learning theory and practices to equip young people (and their adults) with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate body boundaries and create healthy relationships.

Sarah emphasizes the use of generalizable skills that aren’t about sex, but about navigating your body, and your boundaries, in a way that is safe and respectful. She talks about how these basic skills and conversations will lay the groundwork for teaching consent in a low stakes environment so it becomes natural for our kids and teens when the stakes become higher. Sarah also shares how to use a “game of scenarios” that can help tweens and teens have conversations with us and develop their critical thinking without making them feel that they are getting talked at.

Hi friends! Welcome back to the Heartful Parent Podcast. This week, we’re diving into an important but tough topic: child safety. Specifically, we’re discussing child sexual abuse in educational settings. As parents, grandparents, and loved ones, it’s our responsibility to ensure kids grow up brain and body safe.

This episode might be triggering for some of you, especially if this is part of your history. If that’s the case, please take care of your heart. Pause or come back when you're ready. Also, this episode isn't suitable for little ears, so if kids are around, come back to it later. If you're co-parenting, consider listening with your partner so you’re both aligned on this critical topic.

I’m honored to have Rosalia Rivera with us today. She’s a consent and child sexual abuse prevention specialist, speaker, and co-founder of the BRAVE Movement. Rosalia’s insights offer practical, empowering steps to help us protect our children and move from fear to action.

Without further ado, let’s get started!
