We can thank the fat free era for what we now see with a lot of clients and that is a NEED for essential fatty acids as many are deficient in EFAs. We were fear mongered to believe that even good, anti-inflammatory fats were making people fat in the 80s/90s…research now shows it made people FATTER. 

The low fat era caused more dysfunction in the body because what many people aren’t aware of is that omega-6 fats have nearly the opposite effect of omega-3s. Omega-6 fats promote inflammation and contribute to modern diseases such as heart disease, obesity and diabetes. Unfortunately, omega-6 fats are ubiquitous in the modern diet. They’re found in nearly all processed, refined and restaurant-cooked foods, and recent statistics suggest they may constitute as much as 20% of calories in the average American’s diet.

In this episode we talk about when you should and should not fear fat. Dive into what fat does for your body, high quality fat to include and fats to avoid.

Everyone has their days/weeks that things feel way HARDER...  We don’t feel like we are in our groove, but I always ask myself, what is the alternative? 

If I skip my workout I’m tired, crabby, upset with myself that I didn’t workout and I don’t physically / mentally feel good VERSUS feeling proud.

If I choose a burger and fries or order in because “I felt like it and didn’t want to cook” [every now and then FINE, not saying you can’t do these things] how does that add up? 

We’ve talked about the accumulation effect before and the 1% better rule. If you follow this with your food and think about the small changes you can make that 1% you focus on accumulates, and by the end of the year you’re 37% better… or the opposite, you’re 0% better and maybe taken many steps backwards towards your goals… 

This impacts your health and can be the difference of preventing or inviting disease.

Remember, every meal/snack you have is an opportunity to make a GOOD choice!

So as you may already know, we don’t like ‘average’.  We don’t like ‘just living’, or ‘not being sick’.  We want OPTIMAL health, we want AMAZING, we want a life for ourselves and for our clients and listeners that is well BEYOND and ABOVE average... and we hope you want that for yourself as well. 

Exercising, eating healthy/nourishing foods should all be like brushing your teeth, taking a shower, eating breakfast, sleeping - things you do EVERYDAY just because your body needs it. 

Average individuals think one step in front of them - What can get me the fastest results?  What is the easiest, least path of resistance?  They don’t want to get too uncomfortable. 

We see this the most with people that have unfortunately dieted their way into poor health.  Either by under eating for too long and so their body has adapted at a place of eating 1000-1200 calories OR they now are dealing with gut issues, hormonal imbalances, inflammation etc. because of under-nourishment.  

Their body NEEDS healing and if they would take maybe 6-12 months and really simply focus on eating enough, resting more, HEALING and guess what… they would get to a place where their body can respond in a healthy way.  But unfortunately, that long-term, INVESTMENT view is to ‘in the distance’ for most. Some can’t even comprehend something taking that long because we are so used to instant gratification and ‘fast results’ being pushed in our face...having to be the smallest version of ourselves… never having ups and downs.  

Here is the hard truth, there are going to be ups and downs in your life.  You’re going to probably go through phases where your body is changing.  

That is why the short term mindset will always keep you stuck.

When it comes to health... 

We feel uncomfortable in our skin, so we want to lose the weight FAST.

We do a week of workouts and we expect immediate change...we avoid alcohol or sugar for one week and expect large amounts of weight loss... We track our food for a week and think our body composition should change.

You need to pay your dues.  

If you want to be healthier, happier, feel better - you have to put in the time.  Especially if you aren’t healthy, happy or feel good right now.

Today we talk about the scary truth behind birth control and what Doctors may not tell you. TO BE CLEAR: We are NOT ANTI birth control, we are PRO informed consent!

Hormonal birth control can also be very beneficial for SOME people with extremely painful conditions like severe endometriosis or really heavy periods.  So we are NOT saying you should never take birth control by any means.

However, and unfortunately, 'informed consent' seems to be RARE in the US for both women and girls.

So, today we are hopefully clearing up some of the confusion and misunderstandings around what birth control actually is and what it does - ESPECIALLY when it comes to 'progestin' which is NOT progesterone as they say.

  • What a REAL period is without birth control (synthetic hormones). 
  • How hormonal birth control does NOT ‘balance your hormones’.  
  • How birth control should not be marketed essentially to every woman on the planet with a mild hormonal symptom because it very well could be making things much worse.

In todays episode we discuss how many people think about doing things or talk about doing things, but never truly take action. They hold themselves back thinking about the 'what if's' or make excuses to push things off like 'I'll start Monday.' 

The hard truth is, if you’ve been on the fence for a while or tiptoeing around the action you need to take to create change and are still talking about it, you’re a broken record. 

So, stop talking about it and accept where you are OR COMMIT  to taking action.

This doesn’t have to be extreme or CRAZY, we aren’t about the all or nothing or extremes – by now you all should know that. BUT you CAN take action today 

  • You can go for a 10 min walk
  • You can drink more water
  • You can choose a salad with grilled chicken or salmon over a burger and fries or HECK even just a burger with a side salad is a good start
  • You can choose to ask for help
  • You can choose to get into bed earlier instead of watching another episode on Netflix
  • You can choose to get up earlier and have time to collect yourself instead of starting the day in a rush and frantic. 

THERE’S A LOT YOU CONTROL RIGHT NOW... SO JUST START DOING SOMETHING. You'll be better, happier, and healthier for it.

As a society, we've fallen into the trap of instant gratification, and shying away from things when they get hard...

When something feels hard or difficult to change in terms of our current routine/habit, most people push it off until tomorrow, after XYZ date, etc. or complain about it or we give up on it completely.  Because we naturally don’t like for things to feel hard. . . it's human nature to shy away from anything that is a threat. BUT the struggles are exactly what you need.  The struggles teach you more than the success ever will. 

If you aren’t uncomfortable, you like won’t experience any considerable change.  And if you are experiencing change, guess what - you’ll go through struggles.  It's simply part of it.  So, embrace it, use it as your power and build the grit necessary to change your life.

In todays episode we talk about things that may be preventing weight loss even in a negative energy balance i.e. a calorie deficit. We discuss the common drivers of dysfunction in the body and how that creates stress that can halt weight loss/fat loss... 

We also discuss why exercise is not the way to create a deficit, how calories are not metabolized equally, how foods affect our hormones and, in turn, can affect how we use or store energy.  

One of the big take homes today is to consider your HEALTH and quality of food versus just calories as many people fill their intake with 'diet' food that contains a lot of chemicals, which are associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high LDL cholesterol, mental health illness, neurological decline and all cause mortality. 

Not so fun, FUN FACT: In Europe there are more than 1,300 chemicals that are not legally allowed to be added into food due to their toxic effect on human health. The US has only curbed 11 of these. Note: not made illegal, just recommended against...we will share more about this in a coming episode!

Do you feel like you're controlled by certain thing such as food? alcohol? shopping? Are you seeking pleasure through constant dopamine hits?  

Dopamine is responsible for allowing you to feel pleasure, satisfaction and motivation. But sometimes things go too far and we become addicted to things such as substances, habits or food that don't serve our long term goals.  Dopamine hits from instantaneous and short sighted actions to not results in long lasting happiness. Sure, they may feel good for a fleeting second to enjoy life but it is better to make your own future enjoyable too instead of miserable as you keep crashing down from manufactured dopamine highs. 

So, sometimes restriction is necessary!

Did you know that several ingredients that the US allows to be added to processed foods are banned, or severely regulated, in other countries?!

The food supply in the U.S. (and many other nations, too) is full of chemical flavorings, additives, colorings, and other ingredients that you may not want to put in your body.

Each country has its own standards for what ingredients and food production practices it considers safe. And some of what’s considered normal practice for the food industry in the United States is handled very differently in other countries.

It’s well known that rates of chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity are at an all time high in the U.S...and the country is also saturated with food allergies, digestive distress, autoimmune diseases and behavioral disorders. In many cases, these conditions and diseases are highly preventable. So, we wonder... Could it be possible that some of these ingredients and food additives that other countries have banned, but the U.S. still uses, are playing a part in the public health crises?

The CDC recommends 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity AND 2 days of muscle strengthening activity. And this would be a MINIMUM - if you want optimal health, I’d even say 3-5 days of strength training is where it should be.

That is at least 30 minutes per day - and that is not walking. Walking is great, it gets us moving, it helps aerobic capacity, but it is NOT. THE. SAME. Muscle is an endocrine organ, which impacts our hormones, and is one of the main areas of use for our energy consumption. When you are training and moving you get the benefit of your muscle for the disposal of the energy we consume. Muscle contraction ensures that the metabolites and our energy sources (i.e. fats and carbs) are turning over quicker and are not being stored. Otherwise, fat and glucose can both be stored in muscle. 

The more muscle you have, the more our body is able to turn over energy stores efficiently and quickly i.e. We are not storing our energy in additional fat cells or burdening our liver with trying to process it.

When we don’t work our muscles, they become less healthy tissue. They can start to foster a more inflammatory environment within the body. So if you are searching for health, and even if you are just hoping to live a longer life - exercise is not optional.

  2. Exercise - Not just walking.
  3. General daily movement - Walking is important! 
  4. Weekends cannot be free for alls.
  5. Quality of Food - much easier to control calories this way and you make sure you’re getting your body what it needs.
