07 Feb 2022 | Weekly Special: How to lose weight and improve your health using the nutrient - energy reset | 00:17:17
In this episode I talk about how resetting our intake of proteins, carbs and fats can improve our health and help with weight loss. Our health depends on having adequate building blocks and cofactors to keep our body’s operating systems functioning properly. These are amino acids, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Humans have adapted over millions of years to get these from high-quality animal foods. For many people, animal proteins are the missing link in improving their health. Prioritising protein at every meal is the key. For anyone wanting to lose weight, it’s important to tap into burning your own body fat for energy. This means keeping the amount of energy you eat low. There is a limit to how many carbs we can process without these being stored as body fat. Controlling carbs is the key to metabolic flexibility and fat-burning. Fat is an excellent fuel, but if you want to burn the fat from your fat cells, you may need to reduce how many fats you add to your meals and concentrate on eating the fats that naturally come in food. Avoid vegetable oils like the plague. These are toxic to the human body, wreaking havoc on the health of our cells. I love answering your questions, so please send them in to me. 10 Mar 2022 | Busting the Diabetes Myth: An interview with Dr David Cavan | 00:59:25
Dr David Cavan specialises in the management of diabetes. He has spent most of his career writing and educating about how to prevent and reverse type-2 diabetes, and how to better manage type-1. He has written several books on how to reverse 2-type diabetes, his latest is called “Busting the Diabetes Myth”. Today we talk about how to reverse type-2 diabetes using a low-carb dietary approach. He explains the role of insulin in the development of this disease and why dietary interventions are superior to drugs. We talk about how early diagnosis and lifestyle interventions can reduce the risk of chronic and debilitating disease. Dr Cavan has excellent credentials, having worked as a consultant physician for the Bournemouth Diabetes and Endocrine Center for 20 years. In 2013 he moved to Brussel where he worked for 3 years as the Director of Policy and Programmes at the International Diabetes Federation. In 2017 he became closely involved in the very successful Diabetes Reversal programme in Bermuda. He is now back in the UK as an independent consultant working on different diabetes projects and resuming clinical practice. If you are thinking about a low-carb approach to managing your diabetes, I think this is an excellent interview to provide some basic strategies. It’s always important to talk to your doctor about these kinds of changes. If your doctor isn’t familiar with using a low-carb approach for diabetes reversal, this is an excellent interview to share. Today I had a chat with my friend Doug Brown. We talked about the importance of self-care - why looking after your health is so important for success in your professional and personal life. When we are healthy, we cope better with stress, get sick less often and have more patience for those around us - particularly the people we love the most but often don't treat as well as we should. When we have good health, we wake up with joy for life, looking forward to the day ahead. We have energy and clarity that enables us to put in the work we need each day to achieve the vision we have for our life. Doug has very generously shared some special resources for my listeners. 23 Mar 2022 | Think and grow rich, the 5-million dollar, 12 minute a day secret: An interview with John Mitchell | 01:03:14
Today’s guest is my friend and mentor John Mitchell. John Mitchell lives an exceptional life. John shares how at the age of 50 he transformed his already good life – into an exceptional one. He tells some very personal stories that will capture your heart and imagination. We talk about the gap between where we are and where we want to be and what we need to do to make a change, rewire our brains and live our own exceptional lives. This one isn’t for the faint-hearted. John tells me only 1% of people have what it takes to really upgrade their lives. He says most of us only have a preference to lose weight and be healthy, improve our careers and income or have a great relationship. He says wanting it isn't enough; to achieve it, we need to create a plan and execute it. John calls that his secret. That’s what he has mastered and now shares with the rest of the world. He talks us through his 12-minute a day routine of exactly what he does and why. You may have noticed I’m mixing the podcast guests up between those who are experts on eating and how to eat for good health, with those who have mastered the art of living up to their full potential using strategies that rewire their brains. No matter how much we desire to lose weight and become healthy, as long as we are living with emotions of overwhelm, anxiety, paralysis and negative self-talk, all the best intentions won't work. The first step is to upgrade our subconscious thoughts and rewire our brains so we can change those patterns. It's simple, but it's not easy. It takes trust in the system, dedication to the practice and belief that you're worth the effort. Meeting John has transformed my life. His advice has helped me overcome my ruminating, procrastination and helped me to take action. If I can do it, so can you. I hope you will find these insights helpful in creating the life that you want, so that you may achieve your personal and professional goals and dreams. Thanks so much, John for your generosity and for being such a wonderful, compassionate and generous human. You can find John at https://thinkitbeit.com/our-story/

30 Mar 2022 | A journey from overweight, high blood pressure, achy joints and pulmonary embolism, back to vibrant full health: An interview with Drs. Leon and Tamora Byneo | 01:34:32
Today I talk with Drs Leon and Tamora Byneo about their journey from overweight, high blood pressure, achy joints and pulmonary embolism, back to vibrant full health. This couple, who have been married for 32 years, is passionate about how the proper human diet allows us to thrive in our modern world. Leon says, "it's such a shame medicine has conquered so many of the things that killed us in the past, is now killing us with poor advice, based on faulty science". He's talking about the dietary guidelines, meat and fatphobia and the current obsession with plant-based diets. He's also talking about the prescription of drugs to treat lifestyle diseases. He knows, he's an ophthalmologist and Tamora is an anesthesiologist. They have been practising medicine for over 30 years and have seen a decline in health, including their own during this time. They are passionate about sharing their knowledge to help others reverse disease and enjoy the benefits that come with good health. Leon's philosophy is to use insulin/inflammation restriction strategies to improve health. This is achieved with a nutrient-dense diet that is rich in animal proteins and fats and time-restricted eating strategies. Check out his Facebook post here. https://www.facebook.com/labynoe/posts/10223106635469090 By understanding the science and what food does in our bodies, we can choose foods that nourish our bodies and brains so we function at our full capacity. Good health is the foundation to living life with energy and clarity so we can fulfil the personal and professional goals we have for ourselves. I listened in awe as this fabulous couple described how they went from fat and sick to healthy and flourishing. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. 06 Apr 2022 | Taking back our health through our diet, exercise, sleep, recovery and the right mindset: An interview with Dr Pete Delannoy | 01:32:39
Today I talked with health coach Dr Pete Delannoy. Dr Pete has a PhD in Biochemistry, he is a Primal Health Coach, and Nutrition Network Advisor. He is highly experienced in healthy weight loss, type -2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and gout remission. Like me, Dr Pete has a passion to share the message that we can take back our health through our diet, exercise, sleep and recovery and most importantly by having the right mindset to do this. We had a great discussion about all these topics. In 2016 Dr Pete was diagnosed with gout and in 2019 he was diagnosed with prediabetes. His blood sugar and HbA1C were high and he was overweight. He was tired and his health was headed downhill. His doctor told him to eat the Mediterranean diet and exercise more. He ate his whole grains and joined a CrossFit gym. He lost a little bit of weight, but still had a plump belly and his blood sugars were rising. His prediabetes was getting worse even though he was carefully measuring grains and lentils and how much protein he was eating. He started to question what he was being told. Dr Pete says, “Conventional wisdom was killing me. The only thing the medical establishment could offer me besides guilt and shame was medication and disease management. Change my lifestyle, they said, even though I was doing what they asked!” Dr Pete and I talk about the real causes of metabolic diseases, weight gain and gout. 20 Apr 2022 | Uncover the inspiration behind the film Beyond Impossible: An interview with Vinnie Tortorich | 01:30:53
I had great pleasure in chatting with Vinnie Tortorich, about his latest documentary, Beyond Impossible. Vinnie is a celebrity trainer, podcaster, author of a best-selling book and producer of 3 documentaries exposing the dark underbelly of the food and fitness industry and the lies they tell us. Today we take a deep dive into his latest film, Beyond Impossible. This is well worth watching and an excellent antidote to the constant barrage of messages we are getting about the health and environmental dangers of eating red meat, along with animal welfare concerns. Vinnie has been in this industry longer than I have and has enormous experience in figuring out what does and doesn’t work for weight loss, improved health and thriving. He’s been a personal trainer to people from all walks of life for thirty years. He’s worked with Hollywood celebrities, captains of industry, stay at home moms, working moms, pregnant moms, ultra-athletes, Ironman triathletes, injured and post-surgical clients and even children with the beginnings of a weight problem. He has an excellent no-nonsense podcast, called Fitness Confidential which has been running for more than 10 years, with his co-host Anna Vocino. https://vinnietortorich.com You can get his free programme “NSNG” PDF here: https://nsng.vinnietortorich.com/get-the-nsng-pdf/ You find his documentaries here: https://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Impossible-Vinnie-Tortorich/dp/B09PQ6R4PJ If you enjoyed this podcast, please subscribe, like and share. 27 Apr 2022 | Why a medical doctor, neurosurgeon resident, with a background in molecular and cellular biology believes that plants are not necessary for good health: An interview with Dr. Anthony Chaffee | 01:49:15
Many thanks to Dr Anthony Chaffee for his time today. I asked him, why a medical doctor, neurosurgeon resident, with a background in molecular and cellular biology believes that plants are not necessary for good health. Dr Chaffee ate a mostly carnivore diet during his 10-year professional rugby career and continues to do so today. Dr Chaffee says, “our current modern diseases aren’t really diseases but the results of toxicity and malnutrition from an inappropriate diet”. We talk about what he believes is the proper human diet and why. We cover a range of subjects from · Plant toxins and how they affect bioavailability · Why we became genetically wired to eat animal foods throughout our evolution · Why the essential nutrients from these foods are so important and how they differ from what plants provide Dr Chaffee describes the deterioration in health that occurred during the agricultural revolution and how that continues today. We have evidence showing decreased brain volume, shorter stature, teeth decay and other problems. Despite the benefits eating animal foods provide for our health, many people believe the environmental and animal welfare concerns outweigh those benefits. This is a topic Dr Chaffee is passionate about. We spend some time discussing the evidence for the role that animals play as an important contributor to maintaining our ecosystem and the health of our planet. The plant free MD podcast is well worth following. Dr Chaffee is also available for Functional Medicine consultations using telemedicine. 18 May 2022 | The Fat Ginger Nerd – A Weight Loss Story: An interview with Brendan Reid | 01:09:19
I had a lot of fun talking with Brendan Reid and thank him for sharing his very personal story. Brendan has written a book called “The Fat Ginger Nerd – A Weight Loss Story”. This is the journey of how he lost 50 kg over two years. After a lifetime of being fat, Brendan finally fulfilled the simplest of his dreams – he was normal. Today we talk about what it was like to be a fat kid, despite doing everything he had been told to do. Instead of reexamining the advice he was given, Brendan did what so many people do and blamed himself and felt there was something wrong with him and somehow it was his fault. Eventually, Brendan tried something new, a low-carb, high-fat approach and was surprised to find how quickly he lost weight and began to feel better. He has kept this off for 7-years and now enjoys life and is looking forward to what else it holds in store for him. This is a very powerful and compelling story and I hope you all enjoy the podcast and support Brendan by purchasing his book. Today I had the pleasure of talking with my good friend Rob Nugen. We thought we would call this episode “one for the blokes” In fact, Rob does amazing work with both men and women, helping them get out of their heads and back in touch with their bodies. He has been facilitating men’s workshops and peer counselling groups since 2015. These are now available online including the Mankind Project and the Bold Life Tribe. Rob, originally from the USA has been living in Kanagawa Japan for 18 years. We talk about the similarities and differences in the emotional needs of men and women. These questions help them answer who they want to be in life and what kind of legacy they want to leave behind. He says “in the middle of work, relationships and other commitments, it’s easy to feel cut-off and isolated” These groups help men to find a safe place to express themselves and find meaning in their lives. They make deep and meaningful connections and develop powerful support networks. Rob is now facilitating a group for men and women, which brings a different perspective to the conversation that he finds very useful. Rob’s passion is barefoot walking. He began when living in Houston and has continued in Japan. He leads weekly barefoot walking groups. My special guest today is Jessica Cox. Jessica Cox is an amazing woman and I thank her for all that she shared in this podcast and the inspiration she provides to people every day. Although Jessica was born different, that has never stopped her from setting and achieving goals in her life. She found she had hidden assets of determination, courage and willpower. What makes Jessica different – is she was born with no arms. While learning to adapt to a world without arms may seem like a huge challenge, Jessica says this wasn’t the biggest challenge in her life. She was complete in herself and didn’t know anything different. The struggles she faces are similar to many that we all have. She says “no one escapes life without their own experiences and challenges to face”. We talk about how we all collect baggage of life. These are hurts, grudges, fears, mental and psychological blocks that hold us back from moving forward in the direction of our dreams. Jessica is a public speaker, mentor and coach. She is a pilot and has the rank of third-degree black belt in Taekwondo and is the Founder of “Possible Thinking”. It is through Jessica’s own “possible thinking” that she continues to set and achieve her own dreams for her life. Dr Millie Osborne has been helping people for more than 30 years as a doctor and physician and holistic psychiatrist. Fit to Eat: How the food industry is making us sick and what to do about it is her 5th book. She has a passion for helping people restore their health, which was so evident in our podcast today. This is a great book; it’s extremely well written and one we should all take the time to read. It was an absolute delight to talk with Millie today; she is so down-to-earth, and compassionate and has lots of suggestions for how we can take back our own health. She has stern words for the pharmaceutical industry and decided she didn’t want to just be a “prescribing” doctor. Although she uses medication when it’s appropriate, she looks for other alternatives first. That’s why she’s the “Holistic Psychiatrist”. We talk about so much; how to feed our children, the link between diet, depression and mental health and why it’s so hard to change our habits even when we want to and our life literally depends on it. His career has spanned more than 50 years and at the age of 75, he is still involved in education and research. He has published over 600 peer-reviewed papers, review articles and book chapters. He has been cited more than 50,000 times in the scientific literature. I think it’s fair to say, he might know a little bit about protein. We start by talking about protein and its importance in providing amino acids to our body. Dr Wolfe explains the difference between the essential and the non-essential amino acids and how these are used to build over 3,000 different protein structures in our body. We are all aware of the importance of protein – amino acids in building and maintaining muscle, but these are vital for all our other body processes as well. Dr Wolfe is a fan of maintaining muscle and he describes how this provides a metabolic sink for glucose, preventing insulin resistance and type-2 diabetes as well as acting as a reservoir for amino acids between meals. We need a constant supply of these in our bloodstream and our muscle provides these when we aren’t eating. We also discuss some of the myths about protein and disease – heart health, diabetes, kidney function and mental health. Dr Wolfe is the Chief Scientific Officer for a company called “The Amino Company” that produces formulations of amino acids for different groups. He is also the author of ‘A Guide to Amino Acid and Protein Nutrition: Essential Amino Acid Solutions for Everyone”. He calls this the EAASE programme. I am enjoying this book and it is a great summary of Dr Wolfe's research and experience in a very readable format. We ran out of time today for all the questions I had – Dr Wolfe has agreed to come back for part 2, which I’m looking forward to very much. 14 Dec 2022 | How getting up for a walk and having FUN is important to a good life: An interview with Dan John | 01:21:31
Today’s guest was very special to me. Dan John is someone who has had a huge influence on my career as a trainer, my own training, and philosophies on life. Dan has blended his outstanding career in academia with professional strength coaching and success in high-performance competitive sports. At 65, he is still achieving competitive goals. He is an author of numerous books that blend his intellect, training philosophies, and trademark wisdom together. His books are insightful, inspiring, and humorous. My two favourite quotes for life and training are – “how is what you do now going to affect your future?”, and “just pick heavy sh** up off the ground and lift it over your head”. Classic wisdom for living life. Today we talk about osteoporosis, walking as the most enduring cardiovascular exercise and why getting up and down off the floor is so important. He talks about his schedule and how having FUN is important for a good life. I'm a huge fan of Dan’s programme, “Mass Made Simple” (a warning, it's simple but not easy). Nor is the 10,000 rep kettlebell challenge – but it’s worth the effort. I love “Easy Strength”. This is something every one of us can do, regardless of where we are starting. It only takes between 8-10 minutes a day, and it is meant to feel easy; so there are no excuses. I get to ask Dan a couple of questions about hitting plateaus in my own training at the end. At Dan John University you will find a workout generator, where you log your equipment, age, gender, goals and time available. It will generate specific workouts for you. There is a free two-week trial, so I suggest trying it out. Dan provides a huge library of free resources, a podcast called Dan John and his numerous books can be found on Amazon. I recommend his work to personal trainers and coaches. What I learned from him over the years certainly helped me become a better trainer, more focused, and to never let go. I hope you love this episode as much as I did. I can’t believe I got to talk to the great man himself! Please subscribe, like and share if you did, as this helps me to attract more wonderful and interesting guests.

He has developed the “Pillars of Vitality” that he shares in his book “The Vitality Secret”. 05 Apr 2023 | From chronically poor health to the return of his energy and vitality: An interview with Daniel Ebbett | 01:07:23
This was a great interview with Kiwi entrepreneur Daniel Ebbett Daniel’s story is one of struggle with chronic insomnia and migraines. Despite trying everything he could from allopathic and natural medicine, his health continued to decline leaving him feeling frustrated and helpless. He was struggling to meet the commitments of his corporate job and powerlifting career. In this episode, Daniel describes his journey from chronically poor health to the return of his energy and vitality. For him, the answers were in his over-exposure to artificial light. He has subsequently become an expert on how light affects our circadian rhythm and health. He says, “health is about light, not food”. Daniel talks about the different frequencies of natural light, from getting the early morning light in our eyes to set our circadian clocks, to the red glow our ancestors experienced from their fires in the evening. There is growing research about the effects of light on the cell receptors in our body and how we need to match our food to the light environment we live in. When we are eating food grown in the tropics, in the middle of winter, this confuses our cells leading to a mismatch between them and the environment. Daniel has gone on to develop a company called BlockBlueLight where he provides high-quality science-based lighting solutions, all around the world. His website is a mine of good-quality information. We both hope you all enjoy this episode and consider the effects of light on your own health. Please subscribe, like and share with any friends and family who may find this helpful. 12 Apr 2023 | How to reduce the deuterium in our body, allowing our cells to age more gracefully: An interview with Victor Sagalovsky | 01:00:20
This was a long-awaited interview with Victor Sagalovsky. Victor is a health optimization expert, who has dedicated himself to understanding the effects of deuterium on human health. I came across the health implications of deuterium a few years ago, as more of the scientific community is dedicating research to this fascinating subject. Harold C Urey received a Noble Peace Prize in 1934 for identifying deuterium. It is also known as heavy hydrogen or H2. Normal hydrogens only have one proton (H1). But some have a neutron as well, making them twice as big and twice as heavy. When these get into our mitochondria, we make “heavy water” as a by-product of our energy production. This interferes with our mitochondrial function affecting how our cells make energy. When they can’t make energy efficiently, they are unable to complete their cellular work and repair. Over time we begin to age and struggle with chronic diseases. Victor is very knowledgeable about this topic, so it was great to talk to him about the ways that we can reduce the deuterium in our body, allowing our cells to age more gracefully. A ketogenic diet can help us deplete deuterium because burning fat is a clean energy and produces light metabolic water. Time-restricted eating and intermittent fasting help in the same way. As we become metabolically flexible, we can use our own body fat for energy. Other mechanisms to deplete deuterium are red light therapy, good sleep, and exercise. Diets that are high in processed foods and toxic seed oils increase deuterium, another good reason to avoid these foods. In his pursuit of health optimization and longevity, Victor has developed a product called “Litewater.” This is deuterium-depleted water that you can drink on its own or add to your normal water to reduce the deuterium load on the body. Victor explains all these concepts and talks about his “Litewater” and how this is produced. You can find a lot more information and research on Victor’s website: https://www.deuteriumdepletion.org We both hope you enjoy this episode. It might be a new topic for some of you and initially appears complex, but the concept is quite simple, even without knowing much about biochemistry. Please let me know if you have any questions that I can help you with. Thanks for listening and please remember to subscribe, like, and share... This was a long overdue interview, but worth the wait. Dr Glen Davis is a well-known GP for his work in reversing type-2 diabetes in his patients with a properly formulated ketogenic diet. He was awarded GP of the Year in 2021 for this work. During this episode, we talk about the struggles of the NZ healthcare system, the need for lifestyle medicine, and how this may look in a modern GP practice. He talks about fat in the diet and how the different quality fats impact on our health. We also talk about the benefits of fasting and how to individual fasting for different situations. I’m looking forward to having Dr Davis back soon for a Q and A where he can answer all your questions. We both hope you enjoy this episode and will share it widely with your friends and family. 03 May 2023 | Menopause, hormones, including thyroid, and other aspects of health: An interview with Dr Elizabeth Bright | 00:49:34
Dr Elizabeth Bright is the author of the menopause book “Good Fat is Good for Women”. There were many aspects of this book I thought were excellent and appreciate Dr Bright joining me to talk about menopause, hormones, including thyroid, and other aspects of health in this podcast. Dr Bright is an osteopath and naturopath and works with her clients using these modalities along with personalised nutritional plans to create long-term healing and good health. She is turning 60 in 2023 and decided to write a book about menopause following her own experience. She came to realise that the symptoms associated with menopause are caused by a lack of adequate nutrition and abuse of our stress response system, rather than a reduction in sex hormones. One of the chapters I most enjoyed in her book was about the medicalisation of women’s health since the time of Hippocrates and naturally occurring events such as menopause, becoming “problems” to be managed. Dr Bright now lives in Italy. She is the mother to 3 children and a Master in Chou Jia Kung Fu. She now engages in paddling boarding and cycling. She switched to a carnivore diet in 2015, when she went into menopause, to assist with her own health and healing. 10 May 2023 | Where does addiction start? An interview with Bitten Jonsson | 01:11:52
Bitten is a registered nurse who was first introduced to addiction medicine 36 years ago and has been working in the area of food addiction and sugar addiction for 27 years ago. As she acknowledged and better understood her own addictions (cigarettes, alcohol, and sugar) she began working to help others address their sugar addiction problems and reclaim their health and lives.
We have a far-reaching conversation talking about where addiction starts – at the intersection of how our individual genetics respond to the environment and how sugar is the gateway drug to other addictions.
Bitten explains the important distinctions between social use, harmful use, and addictions. She explains why these need to be managed in very different ways. We also talk about children, why diet matters, and how we can set them up for problems later in life when we don’t understand the difference between a child who likes sugar and one who is addicted; as she was growing up.
This episode is full of very important gems. I love talking with Bitten and learning so much. Her passion, enthusiasm, generosity, and desire to help shine through. Please subscribe, like, and share with anyone who may find this helpful.

21 Jun 2023 | Rethinking Type-1 diabetes with a ketogenic diet: An interview with Dr Ian Lake | 01:01:30
Dr Ian Lake is a medical practitioner who has type 1 diabetes. Since adopting a very low-carb lifestyle his day-to-day diabetes management has become so much easier with the added bonus of normal HbA1c. He says “as a result of smaller insulin doses, I am not tied down to strict meal times and can eat when I choose. Similarly, glucose control with exercise is far more predictable. Very low-carb for me gives as near to a ‘normal’ life as someone with diabetes can get”. Dr Lake shares important information for type-1 diabetics, who may want to adopt a ketogenic diet but are feeling nervous. We discuss the key safety concerns for type-1, including dyslipidemia, diabetic ketoacidosis and hypoglycemia. Dr Lake shares his own struggles with glucose control and insulin management when eating as the standard advice and dietary guidelines recommend. In a well-executed fasting and exercise project, Dr Lake along 7 others, (including one type-1 diabetic) completed “Zero-Five-100”. They consumed zero calories, for 5 days and ran a total of 100 miles. The purpose of this project was to explore the safety and physiological effects of ketosis in people with and without diabetes, adding to the accumulating https://journals.lww.com/co-endocrinology/Fulltext/2021/10000/Nutritional_ketosis_is_well_tolerated,_even_in.6.aspx\ The reason I wanted to talk to Dr Lake was to encourage GP’s to learn more about the benefits of therapeutic carbohydrate restriction for their patients, not just in diabetes, but in many of the chronic diseases experienced today.
Dr Lake offers comprehensive training for medical professionals with C.E.C. He is available to have a conversation about how a ketogenic diet could be included into a medical practice. https://type1keto.com/keto-courses/

13 Sep 2023 | Understanding Why Metabolic Health Is Key to Mental Health: A conversation with Dr. Rachel Brown | 01:05:56
Dr. Rachel Brown is a metabolic psychiatrist and author of the excellent book “Metabolic Madness - Understand Why Metabolic Health Is Key to Mental Health’. This is an excellent episode to share with your GP or health provider, particularly if you are taking care of someone with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Despite the accumulating evidence, there remains a lot of resistance to the role that ketogenic diets play in helping to maintain a higher quality of life for these patients. This information needs to be shared widely. We also discuss other issues such as ADHD, depression, anxiety, and epilepsy. Dr Brown explains how the brain is a huge consumer of energy, but when our metabolic health becomes compromised it can no longer use glucose efficiently for energy and this is where ketones provide an alternative energy source. This is the kind of information that would help many parents desperate to find solutions for their children and for all of us as we age and want to stay healthy with good cognitive function. 04 Oct 2023 | Diet, exercise and achieving goals: An interview with Dr Sarah Zaldivar | 01:28:35
I had another fabulous conversation today, this time with Dr Sarah Zaldivar. Dr Zaldivar is a Professor of Nutrition at Miami Dale College and is passionate about sharing her knowledge of nutrition, exercise, and mindset. She brings new thinking and research to the topics of diet, exercise, and achieving our goals. Today we discuss a lot of different health topics and why a nutrition professor would adopt a carnivore diet. We talk about:
A little more about Dr. Sarah Zaldivar: Dr. Sarah Zaldivar received her doctorate in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition from the University of Miami. She is currently a professor of nutrition at Miami Dade College and a full-time content creator on YouTube, Instagram, and other platforms. For decades, Dr. Zaldivar taught other health professionals and college students alike at the University of Miami and the American College of Sports Medicine about health and fitness, while battling with her declining health due to following the dietary guidelines. She eventually found freedom from binge eating, acne, weight struggles, fatigue, sugar addiction, depression and anxiety, etc… on a carnivore diet, and that is why she is dedicated to raising awareness regarding the carnivore diet. She also selects a few individuals per month to coach with diet, exercise, and mindset programs. 07 Nov 2023 | How a low-carb approach helps in weight loss and managing chronic diseases: An interview with Dr Louise Phillips | 00:43:55
I thoroughly enjoyed talking with Dr Louise Phillips today. We have a lot in common with our desire to provide high-quality nutrition education that makes a difference in people’s lives. I’m delighted to share Dr Phillips's work. She has developed a unique tool for GPs, specialists and nutrition educators to use in their practice. As a busy GP, Senior Lecturer with the University of Queensland and Supervisor of registrars, she’s in an ideal position to understand the needs of her colleagues and their patients. GPs frequently face criticism, including from me. Dr Phillips and I discuss several challenges they encounter within time-limited practices, adhering to best practice guidelines for drug prescription and limited testing resources. It’s a complex situation. Dr Phillips' Low Carb Scripts tool provides an exceptional resource, enabling GPs to seamlessly integrate evidence-based, low-carb nutrition into their practices. The tool features ready-to-use videos, comprehensive handouts, and other resources, simplifying the process for patients to comprehend and adhere to. Additionally, it offers guidelines for the de-prescription of diabetes medications. I talk with Dr Phillips about the transformations she observes in her patients' health and discuss how a low-carb approach helps in weight loss and managing chronic diseases. I’m eager to assist Dr Phillips in sharing this valuable resource as widely as possible. I hope you will support this effort by subscribing, liking, and sharing this video with friends, colleagues, and family, and I encourage you to share it with your GP as well. Numerous doctors, now considered thought leaders in the low-carb community, embarked on this path when patients shared their journeys. After experiencing personal improvements in weight and health, these doctors pursued specific training in this field. The more we engage with GPs and specialists on this topic, the wider the knowledge will spread, benefiting an increasing number of people. Dr Louise Phillips (MBBS hons 1, FRACGP) is an Australian General Practitioner who loves teaching health professionals about low carbohydrate diets to improve the health of their patients. Having observed a large discrepancy between the amount of time and energy doctors’ have available to study, and the enormous volume of scientific literature that is available (alongside a lot of incorrect Pharma and Big Food sponsored guidelines) she has developed succinct, practical resources for doctors (and other health professionals) which teach them how to provide helpful nutritional advice, in standard consultation time, thru her online learning platform Low Carb Scripts.

03 Jan 2024 | The dangers of supplementing with vitamin D: An interview with Jim Stepheson Jr | 01:11:56
Recommendations to supplement with vitamin D and zinc have become standard practice from both allopathic and alternative medicine throughout the Covid pandemic; including from some of the people I respect the most. As the Health Detective, my job is to look deeper into whether health recommendations are based on evidence rather than speculation. It’s important not to just accept them all at face value without asking questions. Often, as is the case with vitamin D, we find that natural sources from sunshine and food are vital for a healthy functioning body, but the case isn’t so clear about the efficacy of supplementation. The name vitamin D is misleading because this is a hormone (secosteroid) rather than a vitamin that has profound effects on the regulation of over 2000 genes. When I began reviewing vitamin D I found conflicting research and the influence of big pharma money behind the recommendations for increased testing and supplementation. Vitamin D, The Sunshine Supplement Has Shadowy Money Behind It.” During my investigations, I came across the work of Jim Stepheson Jr. Jim has been reviewing vitamin D research for two decades and is one of the most knowledgeable people I could find on vitamin D pathways and the effect of supplementation for our health. I was thrilled that he agreed to this podcast and thank him for his time and sharing a little of his extensive knowledge; and keeping it at a level that we can all understand. This is a very complex subject, and I have so much to learn. If you find this episode helpful, we would both appreciate you sharing it with friends and family. My goal for these podcasts is to bring you a variety of perspectives that may help you on your personal health journey. A little bit about Jim: His previous occupation in the fisheries industry taught him a lot about researching and writing scientific papers so as a natural progression, Jim applied that knowledge to his vitamin D research. What he discovered was shocking! The truth was that supplementing vitamin D was causing severe, long-term health issues and that the claimed vitamin D deficiency was a lie and a hoax! For the past two decades, it has been Jim's passion and avocation to keep researching and spreading the word to help people learn about the dangers of supplementing with vitamin D. If you would like to know more about Jim’s work you can find him at: If you have any health topics you would like covered or questions answered, please email me at susan@susanbirch.co.nz You can sign up for my newsletter to keep up-to-date with the content I am publishing, monthly blogs, and Q & A webinars with experts from around the world. I had a fabulous conversation with Jayne Bullen, the Chief Operating Officer of the Noakes Foundation and Managing Director of Nutrition Network. Jayne is a contributor/editor to the book The Science of Therapeutic Carbohydrate Restriction in Human Health. We talked about the different chapters in the book and the benefits of medical nutrition therapy. This book is designed to answer the questions and concerns that many health care practitioners have about implementing low carbohydrates diets in patients. We both hope that you will share this episode with friends and family who may find it helpful, and if appropriate with your GP. About Jayne Jayne believes research in healthcare needs better funding and strong minds. As the Chief Operating Officer of The Noakes Foundation, she established Eat Better South Africa alongside inspiring colleagues and Prof Noakes and believes in building stronger collaboration in the nutrition and science game. After realizing the dichotomy between brand research budgets and human health research, she decided to leave the formal research world, committed to bringing her global experience in big biz research, systems, and policy change expertise into new areas to affect change to human health. Jayne is an MBA Chevening Scholar, High Dip in Marketing and International Relations graduate. In her MBA at Leeds University, she focussed on the regulation of marketing to children in the food and fast food categories, later conducting Pan European media research and strategy evaluation in this area for various global health bodies and brands. As an extension of her collaborative vision for the future of human health and better healthcare systems, she co-founded Nutrition Network and has been its Managing Director since it was founded in 2018. 28 Apr 2024 | How to use emotional freedom techniques to help recover from a variety of psychological and physical issues: An interview with Rick Wilkes | 01:03:48
Today I talked with Rick Wilkes, from Thriving Now, about the use of emotional freedom techniques (EFT) to help us recover from a variety of psychological and physical issues, including pain, anxiety, phobias and weight control. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is a form of psychological acupressure based on the same energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture to treat physical and emotional ailments but without the invasiveness of needles. In addition to explaining EFT, we go deep into how to use this powerful technique to shift our engrained thought patterns and behaviour. Often, we desire to make a change, and we genuinely believe we want to do this, but then we sabotage ourselves for various reasons. Rick takes us through some setup options; these begin with the statement “Even though I feel” and different closing options depending on the individual goals. I hope you find this episode helpful. There are many different techniques for mastering our thoughts and regulating our emotions. This one suits me and I find it very useful. We hope you enjoy this podcast and would love to hear your experiences. I’m excited to bring you this conversation with Dr Sara Pugh about Quantum Metabolic Therapy. Not only does Sara add being 50% Kiwi to her credentials, but she also brings a wealth of knowledge with her extensive background in biochemistry and genetics. Her PhD in molecular mechanisms, where she delved into protein folding in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson's Diseases, and her work as a Post-Doctoral Researcher on heart muscle cells, cholesterol, and statins are just a few examples of her expertise. She has also published numerous peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals and is dedicated to training doctors and therapists, instilling in them a deeper understanding of biochemistry and neurology. You may need to listen to this podcast a couple of times. We discuss the role of mitochondria in our health and the impact of light exposure on their function. We also talk about the effects of deuterium and the role of metabolic water and magnetism on our health. Sara then walks us through an example of using a quantum metabolic approach to improve health. She highlights simple, cost-free strategies to enhance energy, sleep, and mindset. I highly recommend checking out Sara’s website, which has free introductory courses and explains the mechanisms she mentioned today. 10 Nov 2021 | Investigating the negative health consequences of consuming excess omega-6 fatty acids from vegetable oils : An interview with Tucker Goodrich | 01:35:59
It gives me great pleasure to introduce Tucker Goodrich. He is skilful in interpreting the complex biochemical pathways and literature on this subject and translating these into concepts that are easily understood. His work has been instrumental in increasing our understanding that it’s not just the carbs that are involved in the epidemic of modern diseases. There is considerable evidence that the omega-6 vegetable oils that are ubiquitous in our diet play a pivotal role in our health. In this episode, Tucker talks about how his early stroke-like symptoms and diverticulitis led him to investigate the root cause of his poor health, and how this improved once he eliminated vegetable oils from his diet. He explains the research that shows an association between increased vegetable oil consumption and the growing rates of cancer, heart disease, type-2 diabetes and obesity over the last 120 years. He talks about the mechanisms behind these processes. I really enjoyed talking with Tucker - I have learned so much from him over the years. I greatly appreciate that he took the time to share his knowledge with us.

17 Nov 2021 | Weekly Special: Profits vs Health, A closer look at the newest diabetes drug | 00:09:38
Are the new diabetes drugs really helping our health, or just creating more profits for Big Pharma? In this podcast, I look at 100 years of insulin and how Noble Prize winner Sir Fredrik Banting, who discovered insulin, gave it to the world because he believed everyone who needed it deserved it. Unfortunately, over the last 100 years, drug companies have made a fortune selling insulin. Now under pressure to reduce the costs, they have invented some new drugs for type-2 diabetes. These drugs do nothing to reverse type-2 diabetes and come with an expensive price tag and some serious side effects. We have thousands of New Zealanders who unnecessarily lose limbs to diabetes. Sadly, many doctors don't know that type-2 diabetes isn't a disease of high blood sugar, it is a disease of insulin resistance. High blood sugar is the symptom - not the cause. The solution to a disease caused by lifestyle is to change the lifestyle. 09 Jan 2022 | Weekly Special: Obesity and COVID Severity | 00:10:10
Today’s question comes from Marama who wanted to know why I think that obesity makes Covid worse. She also said that losing weight is really hard, especially when you love your kai and everyone else around you is eating the same. She mentioned that the cost of food is a struggle for many people to make healthy food choices. There is a direct link to Covid severity and your body weight. The more overweight you are the greater your risk of Covid complications. Overweight and obese individuals often have other underlying health conditions, such as type-2 diabetes, heart disease and autoimmune conditions. These all contribute to increasing the risk of complications with a Covid infection. Losing weight is difficult for many people. Despite repeated efforts, the majority of people who do lose weight, end up regaining it and then some. Today, I talk about the importance of self-worth as the key to mastering weight loss. Believing we are worthy of self-care is very important to success. We live up to who we believe we are. If we believe self-care is hard and means sacrifice and pain, then we won't do it, and our body and health reflect that belief. If we can shift those beliefs to where we believe we can take care of ourselves and we are worth the effort, then those beliefs will be reflected in our bodies and health. Thanks to Marama for the excellent questions. I love answering your questions, so please send them in. If you enjoy this podcast, please subscribe, like and share. 16 Jan 2022 | Weekly Special: 2022 the year of self-care | 00:07:16
In this episode, I talk about self-care. I have named 2022 the year of self-care, I think we deserve some self-care after the last couple of years. For me, self-care means consciously choosing to do the things that promote my own physical, mental and emotional health. It means treating my body the way it deserves to be treated rather than going to war with it for not being “perfect” (whatever that means) and then beating myself up every time I make a mistake, which I do all the time. Thanks for watching or listening. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe, like and share this podcast with anyone who may find it useful. 23 Jan 2022 | Weekly Special: How oxidative priority helps you lose weight | 00:10:52
In this episode, I discuss an important concept for weight loss called the oxidative priority. Our body uses different foods – differently. Protein is used as building blocks for the body, whereas carbohydrates and fats are used as energy. If you want to tap into burning your own body fat for energy, it’s important to keep the amount of energy available in your bloodstream low. Because carbs are used before fat, controlling your carb intake is important for weight loss. When you eat more carbs than your body can use, these get converted to triglycerides (fat) in your liver and are transported via the bloodstream to your fat stores. High levels of glucose from carbs and fats from carbs in the bloodstream prevents you from burning your body fat. I love answering your questions, so please send them in to me.
