11 Mar 2022How to Actually Support Someone with IBS00:56:21
Today's episode is really unique because we're talking about how to support someone with IBS and how to not actually support someone with IBS. In the States alone 10-15% of the population suffer from IBS and twice as many women have it as men. Gastrointestinal issues are becoming increasingly commonplace, and there still remains little support and resources for those who are suffering and for their loved ones.

In today’s episode, I am talking to Christine, an amazing woman and IBS advocate who has dealt with her diagnosis since 2007.

During our conversation, Christine shares her own experience with IBS. She talks about ways to cope emotionally with IBS and seek support, dealing with blame and unsolicited advice, and how you can actually support someone with IBS.

In this episode, we cover:
  • Christine shares her IBS journey and how it impacted her mental health [0:29]
  • Ways to cope emotionally with IBS and how to seek support [7:25]
  • Dealing with stigma, feeling unheard by doctors, and sustaining relationships [13:13]
  • Falling for the victim mentality and receiving unsolicited advice [25:11]
  • How to actually be supportive and feel supported [34:45]
  • Having tough conversations with family and focusing on self-support [44:36]

This episode is brought to you by Nerva - a non-invasive, evidence-based, at-home IBS management tool. Nerva is an app that provides gut-directed hypnotherapy through a structured six-week program, followed by a maintenance plan.

About our guest:

Christine has been living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome since 2007. Struggling to manage the pain, anxiety & loneliness that comes with IBS, Christine created an Instagram account called MyIBSLife in June of 2019 as a way to cope through humor. Her page has now become a home and community to 45,000+ chronic illness warriors who are looking to be understood, heard and validated.

Through MyIBSLife, it is Christine’s mission to bring awareness to the reality of living life with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and other digestive disorders, through humorous and relatable content. It is also her goal to create and maintain a safe, open place for others to share their own chronic illness journeys.

Self-sabotage means getting in the way of your own success or progress, or working against yourself. This can also look like self-harm but doesn’t always involve causing harm to yourself. It often looks like doing things that you know don’t work for your body or align with your goals, or even failing to take action towards your goals. What is self sabotage [4:21]
Where does this come from [5:31]

Why self sabotage isn’t your fault [19:40]

06 May 2022Why Weight Loss Isn’t Always The Solution00:46:17
One aspect of IBS that isn’t often talked about is weight gain and weight loss. In general, resources and support for weight management while dealing with IBS is about as non-existent as support for IBS in mainstream healthcare. That doesn’t mean the help doesn’t exist, it’s just harder to find. However, today’s guest is an expert in helping her clients approach healthcare from a weight-neutral perspective while dealing with a digestive disorder.

In today’s episode, I am talking to Shana Spence, a fellow registered dietician nutritionist based in New York. Shawna is passionate about spreading the word on food freedom, nondiet approaches, and Health at Every Size health care.

During our conversation, Shana talks about how to advocate for higher quality healthcare for yourself, the issue with stigmatizing language around weight in healthcare, and what Health at Every Size Matters.

In this episode, we cover:
  • Shana shares more about her own journey to becoming a dietician
  • Intersecting anti-diet work with State-regulated healthcare
  • Stigmatizing language around weight and its impact on community healthcare
  • What is Health at Every Size
  • How to advocate for quality healthcare
  • Navigating healthcare with a chronic illness

Get to know Shana:

Nice to meet you! My name is Shana and I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist based in New York. I label myself as an "eat anything" dietitian. Life is already complicated, why restrict yourself? I wanted to create a platform for open discussion on nutrition and wellness topics considering all the information circulating around these days. Was I always interested in nutrition? No. In the not so long ago past I worked in the fashion industry and hated it. (Joke to myself: I got a B.S in Fashion Merchandising...get it?) I decided to make a change, go back to school and became involved in food policy and public health. Update: I love what I do and want to share as much as possible. Speaking engagements include Peloton, NEDA, Eating Recovery Center, and The Rose Retreats, NPR, FoodFluence 2022.

25 Feb 2022Making Peace with Food When It Feels Like the Enemy00:56:43
When it comes down to eating disorders and disordered eating, there's a lot of confusion around what that actually means. Oftentimes people think they know what eating disorders are, and often approach it from a black and white perspective, when in reality it’s actually a spectrum. When we can approach diet as a spectrum, we realize that we can learn to make peace with food.

In today’s episode I am talking to Dylan Murphy, a registered dietician and founder of Free Method Nutrition, who specializes in disordered eating and proper nutrition. Her philosophy aims to help her clients make peace with food. Dylan knows it can be overwhelming to establish a healthy relationship with food, and is on a mission to help women’s health!

During our conversation Dylan shares how she got into private practice and what fuels her passion for dietetics. She talks about labeling foods and diet as good or bad, what it looks like to make peace with food and how to change your language around food rather than fearing it.

In this episode, we cover:
  • Dylan shares how she got into dietetics, starting her own practice and the confusion around eating disorders  [1:32]
  • Falling down the rabbit hole of “bad foods” and focusing on a mindset shift [7:29]
  • What does it look like to make peace with food and addressing food fear [18:33]
  • Taking the morality out of food [27:34]
  • Changing the language around food can change your mindset [34:44]
  • How to ask for support and where to find it [41:32]

About our guest: Dylan Murphy is a Registered Dietitian and founder of FREE Method Nutrition, a virtual nutrition practice that exists to empower women to break up with diet culture by teaching them how to trust, respect, and feel safe in their bodies. Dylan and her team of Registered Dietitians equip women with the knowledge and tools to gain clarity in their food choices and confidence in their bodies through nutrition coaching in 1:1 and small group settings.

25 Mar 2022Navigating Intuitive Eating with Digestive Disorders & Chronic Illness00:58:54
Digestive diseases and disorders are increasingly becoming commonplace in the world. Things like GERD, Celiac, Crohn’s and the ever so common IBS are issues where the gastrointestinal system is dealing with inflammation or bacterial overgrowth. While these conditions range from mild to severe, it can be really tough to face a diagnosis and learn how to eat and nourish their bodies moving forward.

In today’s episode I am talking to Elyse Resch, a RDN and a nutrition therapist in private practice in Beverly Hills with over thirty-seven years of experience. She helps her client navigate restrictive eating patterns and practice more mindful eating habits.

During our conversation Elyse shares her own experience with restrictive eating, infertility and retraining her mindset about food and nutrition. She talks about the intuitive eating framework, misconceptions about this practice, why nourishing your body means you’re nourishing your brain and the role diet culture plays in food preference.

In this episode, we cover:
  • Elyse shares why she decided to specialize in intuitive eating and digestive disorders [2:37]
  • What is the intuitive eating framework and some of the misconceptions around this practice [11:59]
  • Our brains can’t work if we aren’t nourishing ourselves and why serotonin matters [23:56]
  • Does aversion to certain food come from diet culture or genuine harm to your body? [30:11]
  • Food neutrality and reflection in intuitive eating [37:43]
  • What does hunger actually mean [48:40]

Today’s episode is sponsored by Seed. Their signature product, the DS-01™ Daily Synbiotic, is a combination of science-backed probiotic strains and prebiotics that work in synergy to promote healthy digestion, ease of bloating, glowing skin, and more.  You can learn more about Seed and the Daily Synbiotic at www.seed.com. Your diaphragm is involved in breathing, but did you know it’s also involved in digestion?

About our guest:

I graduated Summa cumme laude from Lipscomb University in 2006 with a double major of Exercise Science and Spanish having played on a scholarship for volleyball. Due to an injury in college to my spine, I then decided to attend Belmont University where I graduated with my Doctorate Of Physical Therapy. Since then, I have achieved a board certification in orthopedics, certification in orthopedic manual therapy and several other certifications and continuing educatio education including dry needling, pelvic pain, pre and post-natal pilates specialist and specifically progressing female athletes to and through pregnancy.

I started my own practice in 2018 to allow my clients more 1:1 care and allow for a better family-work balance called Priority Physical Therapy. I reside in Mt. Juliet with my husband of 17+ years (Weldon), 2 children (Audrey and Collin) and newly adopted German Shorthair pointers (Tess and Dotty). When I'm not at work, I will be at my kids' events, on the lake, working out or reading "nerdy" anatomy/self-care books.

About our guest Lindsey Davis, RDN, LDN:

Lindsey was diagnosed with IBS around 12 years old. With little guidance, she fell into the trap of only eating "safe foods" that she knew didn't trigger symptoms. She lived many years under-nourished and in fear of foods.

Now, as a dietitian at Gutivate, Lindsey has learned how to manage her IBS by taking care of both her mind and body. She no longer fears food and now nourishes her body with a variety of tastes and textures every day. She is passionate about helping you find that same freedom!

You can work with Lindsey in our 1:1 or group programs, and connect with her more on Instagram @gutivate.

The short answer is not really, but naturally, there is a longer, more complex answer. We all know that IBS is a very complex disorder, and its pathological cause is not known which makes it harder to treat. However, despite there not being one clear path of treatment, there are different ways to help patients facing this chronic gut issue. During this episode, I explain why IBS is hard to treat, the importance of creating a diverse gut microbiome, and encouraging healthy motility of your gut.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Are there potential treatments? [3:16]
  • The gut-brain connection as a way to treat IBS  [5:26]

  • What role does your immune system play? [9:15]
  • Encouraging healthy motility [11:13]
  • The real answer for IBS management [12:44]

13 May 2022The Overlap of Disordered Eating, Eating Disorders & IBS00:55:47
There is a complex relationship between disordered eating, eating disorders and digestive disorders. It is important that these conversations happen in the GI space, and as health care providers we need to be cautious of how we are helping patients who are navigating care in this space, to prevent disordered eating patterns that can harm them further.

In today’s episode we have special guest Beth Rosen, a non diet registered dietitian specializing in GI nutrition and disordered eating.

During our conversation Beth shares how her own experience with IBS inspired her to get into the field of GI and dietetics. She talks about how ED are actually a spectrum, how restrictive eating habits can present as digestive disorders or exacerbate them further and why seeking a community who understands you is the best way to support many patients who struggle with gut issues and diet.

In this episode, we cover:
  • Beth shares how she got into dietetics
  • Working with patients who deal with ED and why it’s a spectrum
  • How ED patterns can present as a digestive disorder
  • Tools and resources that can help
  • Why diversifying your food intake doesn’t help your gut overnight
  • It's important to treat the ED first
  • Shifting from the restrictive eating mindset due to GI issues
What if you could develop skills to help manage IBS symptoms in only 10 minutes per day? Today’s episode is sponsored by Mahana Therapeutics, who has made cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) more accessible through their app, Mahana IBS. This is a new app that offers evidence-based CBT to reduce the severity of IBS symptoms - until the end of June 2022 this is available at no-cost for eligible patients. Get started now and download the app at mahanatx.com/TheGutShow.

03 Jun 2022IBS Healthcare from a GI Provider’s Point of View00:59:47

Within the functional space of IBS, doctors visits tend to be really tense, and they tend to be filled with more negativity than positivity for patients and their experiences. One really big point of concern within the IBS community is the the relationship between GI provider and patient when dealing with digestive disorders like IBS and IBD. Getting help seems like a massive task, and accessing professional help and expert resources seems more impossible than winning the lottery.

In today’s episode, my guest Jennifer Fijor, is a nurse practitioner who works in the GI space and is passionate about breaking down barriers between patients and gut specialists.

During our conversation Jennifer shares why there might have been tense relationships in the past with certain providers, some ways that you can advocate for better care yourself and how to best prepare for appointments to get the most out of your time.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Getting into gastroenterology and digestive disease as a nurse practitioner
  • Why do patients have such poor experience with healthcare providers?
  • The barriers of limited facetime and tight schedules
  • Advocating for better care and how to talk about symptoms
  • Finding alternative providers and help
  • When to ask for referrals and the role diet plays
  • Ensuring communication between different providers

What if you could develop skills to help manage IBS symptoms in only 10 minutes per day? Today’s episode is sponsored by Mahana Therapeutics, who has made cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) more accessible through their app, Mahana IBS. This is a new app that offers evidence-based CBT to reduce the severity of IBS symptoms - until the end of June 2022 this is available at no-cost for eligible patients. Get started now and download the app at mahanatx.com/TheGutShow.

About our guest:

Jennifer Fijor MSN, RN, FNP-BC is originally from Chicago, and moved out to Seattle approximately four years ago. The mountains, hiking, and activities brought her to the Pacific Northwest, and she is completely in love with it. She has been in G.I. for nearly 14 years, and started as a G.I. tech, continued to work as a G.I. nurse, then parlayed that into a nurse practitioner role. She has always been in love with G.I. for some strange reason, and she thinks it’s because everyone in G.I. has a very odd sense of humor and she fits right in.

You can find her on Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok at @gutgalz

She also has an IBS journal which can be helpful for patients who struggle with IBS and would like to discuss symptoms with their providers. Link: https://amzn.to/3rQBs0u

25 Nov 2022Season Wrap00:27:35
I cannot believe that we are at the end of season four of the Gut Show. I've loved recording this, and it has been a lot of fun researching topics and having new conversations. I hope that this has been helpful for you every step of the way. In this final episode, I actually wanted to end on one of the most controversial topics that has come across my (virtual) desk, and it's the way IBS is marketed by different influencers and health professionals on social media.  During this episode share my thoughts on what IBS is, the dangers around the narrative that IBS is BS, what drives IBS marketing and how you should deal with your IBS.

In this episode, we cover:
  • Is IBS really BS?
  • Why I don’t believe that IBS is BS
  • The root behind IBS marketing
  • Doing the proper research behind IBS
  • How to deal with this narrative and your IBS

Welcome to Season Four of The Gut Show podcast! Today, we’re talking about what makes poop “normal” and what poop is actually made of. Finally, we’ll discuss what it could mean if you’re pooping too much OR not enough. Basically, you have been enrolled in POOP 101 today! I hope you learn something new about yourself and you come away with a greater understanding of your health.

In this episode, we cover:

  • What is normal poop?
  • How does my food turn into poop?
  • Is it true that you aren’t what you eat, you are what you ABSORB?
  • Why are my poops different colors?

  • How is stool stored?
  • What happens when I finally sit down on the toilet to poop?

20 May 2022Improving the Quality of Low FODMAP Alternatives00:52:13
Many doctors and experts recommend those suffering with IBS and other gut disorders to adopt a low FODMAP diet. These diets are often restrictive and lack a lot of flavour which many people find difficult to deal with. However, as more research goes into IBS there are warriors out there making diet a little more manageable.

In today’s episode, I am talking to special guest Ketan Vakil, fellow IBS warrior and founder of Gourmend. After dealing with stomach issues the majority of his life, he had to amend his diet to help heal his stomach but didn’t want to sacrifice flavour! His company has developed low FODMAP alternatives with signature spices and flavours.

During our conversation, Ketan shares how his cultural background and love for cooking influenced the way he approached his low FODMAP Diet. He talks about living with IBS, the connection between diet and your gut and what he hopes to see happen in the future for the low FODMAP world.

In this episode, we cover:
  • Ketan shares his journey to being diagnosed with IBS and starting his own food company
  • Educating audiences on alternatives to high FODMAP foods
  • How the products are developed at Gourmend
  • Stigma and challenges around low FODMAP alternatives
  • High quality ingredients are more expensive
  • Seasonal produce
  • The future of Gourmend
What if you could develop skills to help manage IBS symptoms in only 10 minutes per day? Today’s episode is sponsored by Mahana Therapeutics, who has made cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) more accessible through their app, Mahana IBS. This is a new app that offers evidence-based CBT to reduce the severity of IBS symptoms - until the end of June 2022 this is available at no-cost for eligible patients. Get started now and download the app at mahanatx.com/TheGutShow.

About our guest:

Gourmend was started by Ketan Vakil, who suffered from perplexing stomach issues since he was a teenager. It took years of doctor visits and testing, but he finally identified the problem: Ketan was having trouble digesting foods high in FODMAPs. What he needed was a diet that was low in these short-chain carbohydrates to put his gut problems behind him.

Easier said than done. Part of a multicultural family, living in one of the best food cities in the world, Ketan was no stranger to cooking and eating rich, flavorful foods. But sticking to a low FODMAP diet meant cutting out garlic, onions, honey, legumes and other ingredients that were the base of many recipes that he loved. For a foodie, this was sad news to swallow.

So Ketan set out to create his own ingredients that were low in FODMAPs but high in flavor—and reclaim the gourmet tastes he craved. By teaming up with experienced dietitians and organic farmers, he found FODMAP-friendly ingredients he could use to cook his favorite recipes again. But, as you now know, they were too delicious to keep to himself.

Today Gourmend is working to bring the freshest, most flavorful cooking essentials to the table—ingredients that are gentle on the stomach without sacrificing a bit of gourmet taste.

07 Apr 2023Are gut issues ruining your body image?00:27:47

When you have IBS, your body image can be altered both in what you see and what you feel.

Social media can flood your feed with the ideal body… even though posing, editing, and filters are being used to achieve their look.

This can lead to people trying to look like the images they see online and being frustrated when bloating and other physical symptoms make achieving the look difficult.

In this episode, we cover:

What is body image [1:07]

What is positive body image [2:46]

What is negative body image [3:55]

Can body image fluctuate [4:56]

Societal beauty standards [7:28]

Physical changes as a result of a chronic condition [8:52]

Can mental health affect body image  [12:41]

Is this your fault [13:52]

What can be done  [15:41]
