In February 2024, with very little fanfare, Los Angeles Unified School District introduced a new grading policy, the first update since 2005. Based in Equitable Grading and Instruction principles, this new policy recommends that teachers to use equitable grading practices and states that grades should reflect student proficiency in learning outcomes. In this episode, Joe Zeccola joins Sharona and Bosley for a look into the process that went into crafting this new policy. In this episode, our hosts Bosley and Sharona take a thorough look at the third and fourth decisions of the grading architecture of an alternatively graded course.
In traditional grading, instructors don't usually determine if a specific learning target has or has not been completed satisfactorily. There are numerous ways, based on assessment methods and other factors, to determine when the learning target is complete. From a holistic approach to specific numbers of demonstrations of sufficiency, several of the ways of completing a learning target are discussed. Once individual learning targets are developed and proficiency criteria decided upon, then its time to roll all of it up into a final course grade (assuming the instructor needs to give one). Ranging from a simple counting up of successes to utilizing a more nuanced approach, instructors will be introduced to some additional options and methods for approaching final grades. Welcome to the inaugural episode of The Grading Podcast, a show dedicated to exploring everything related to grading student work in the context of the educational system of the United States. Grading is a largely unexamined component of the classroom experience for most instructors and students. Until the fifteen years or so, important research into grading practices and their effect on students was often ignored by instructors, administrators, and institutions in favor of a "traditional" points-and-percentages based grading system.
