01 Dec 2020 | How to Eat Your Way to a Healthier Menopause | 01:04:41
Eat your way to a healthier menopause. I’m joined by Dr. Liz Lipski, my dear girlfriend who shares her insight into gut health, especially for post-menopausal women. We all know by now that the gut is the gateway to our overall health, so when we figure out what foods we can and can’t eat, and what type of diet we thrive on, our health will be unstoppable. Key Takeaways Foods You Should Eat for Estrogen Balance
About Dr. Liz Lipski Prof. Liz Lipski, Ph.D., CNS, FACN, IFMCP, BCHN, LDN is Professor and the Director of the Academic Development for the graduate programs in Clinical Nutrition at the Maryland University of Integrative Health, the owner of the Innovative Healing Academy, and the author of Digestive Wellness, now in its 5th edition. Dr. Lipski holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Nutrition, is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition (FACN), and holds two board certifications in clinical nutrition (CNS, and BCHN) and one in functional medicine (IFMCP). She is on faculty for The Institute for Functional Medicine, and the Metabolic Medicine Institute fellowship program. She is on the board for the American Nutrition Association, and advisory boards for the Certified International Health Coaches, and the Autism Hope Alliance. Dr. Lipski has been a co-author in peer-reviewed papers and is the author of several books: Digestive Wellness, Digestive Wellness for Children, and Leaky Gut Syndrome, and a video course The Art of Digestive Wellness. After 30 years of clinical practice, she devotes her time to teaching, writing, and building the field of personalized nutrition. Heal Your Gut for a Healthy Menopause Dr. Liz Lipski devotes her life to finding innovative and sustainable ways to heal your gut microbiome. She shares how quickly you can change your gut health. It might surprise you to learn you can start feeling improvements in around 24 hours! Did you know that the word diet doesn’t have to refer to food restriction for weight loss? We’re changing the approach to the diet to focus on the type of food and eating habits that help YOU thrive. Liz explains why more and more people are turning to restrictive diets, such as gluten-free, vegan, Keto, or carnivore instead of getting to the root of their health problems. Especially for post-menopausal women, we need to focus on eating estrogen-balancing foods. Liz shares some of the best foods for this, including broccoli, cabbage, and kale, so make sure you’re loading your plates with these. You also might have noticed, as you age, that you can no longer tolerate some foods like you used to. Liz explains how this could be a histamine intolerance that’s showing up in your body through bloating or other uncomfortable symptoms. Discover the FODMAP Diet One way that Liz encourages you to explore your food sensitivities and intolerances is to follow the FODMAP diet. This is an elimination diet that can indicate what foods you should avoid. One thing we both know is that when we put our patients on the FODMAP diet, their symptoms improve dramatically in a short period of time. Most people have a diet that’s very high in processed foods. We should all endeavor to be more mindful of what we eat and try to stick to more natural, whole foods. Trust me, when you find the diet that’s right for your body, you will thrive on it! Liz also explains the second part to having a healthy gut: making time for yourself and keeping your stress levels in check. When we prioritize our own mental health and well-being, we’re better able to keep our guts healthy. Putting ourselves first also gives us more energy to assist others. How do you fill your own bucket? What activities do you find gives you more energy? As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com. In This Episode
Quotes “For me, digestion is really this river of life. Just like any river, it can get slowed down, sluggish, not work very well, and dried up, or it can flood. We don’t want either of those things to happen. We just want this to be working really well.” [11:07] “Especially for women, cabbage family foods are so protective for breast cancer and other hormone-dependent cancers.” [22:20] “I think it’s just interesting to know what those trigger foods are for us and be aware of it. Then you can make a choice.” [40:32] “Our body is always trying to tell us and if we slow down enough, it will give us wisdom.” [54:45] Resources Mentioned Take The Digestive Health Appraisal Questionnaire Learn About Maryland University of Integrative Health Enroll in The Art of Digestive Wellness Follow Dr. Liz Lipski on Facebook | Twitter | LinkedIn | YouTube Join the KetoGreen Community on Facebook Buy Keto-Green 16 Check out the full episode page Follow Dr. Anna on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter Related Episodes 148: Healing Your Gut Issues With Enzymes w/ Steven Wright

08 Nov 2018 | Re-Thinking Your Cervix: Pain, Orgasms and More | 00:48:38
Today I want to start a conversation on a topic that you won’t often hear about, and that is about connecting more positively with your cervix. Meet Today’s Couch Talk Guest, Olivia BryantOn today’s Couch Talk I interview Olivia Bryant, founder of Self: Cervix, a global project that aims to educate women on how to heal their cervix for more pleasure, deeper orgasms, and easier childbirth. To date over 2500 women have taken part in her project. Prior to starting Self: Cervix Olivia worked as a sexologist and coach. I recently met Olivia when she interviewed me on her podcast on the topic of how to have a more empowered menopause… and I absolutely loved her mission to help women with what has been a somewhat taboo and hidden subject – and that is a woman’s cervix and how it is so much more than just the point of attachment between the uterus and vagina. Olivia is opening up this type of communication worldwide and is really helping a lot of women. In many cases, she is helping women figure out what is causing their pain, lack of libido and lack of orgasms. And with others, she is opening up a new sexual awareness and awakening. What IS The Cervix? The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that is within the vagina. It is the opening to the womb. Here is a photo (courtesy WebMD) of the cervix for an anatomical reference. During a woman’s pap smear a sample of cells are taken from the cervix and examined for signs of cancer or other issues. The cervix can also be a gateway to both pain and orgasm. And that is the focus of today’s Couch Talk. In Today’s Couch Talk Interview You Will Learn
I hope you enjoy the interview! Let me know what you think or if you have any questions by commenting below. Oxytocin is often referred to as the "love hormone" or the "cuddle hormone" due to its association with feelings of love, bonding, and intimacy. However, it is much more than that. [00:06:24] – Dr. Sahar Swidan
"The studies have shown that you gotta hug somebody at least 20 seconds, minimally, to increase the release of oxytocin. 29 Sep 2020 | How to Support Yourself Through Grief Using Brainspotting | 00:39:12
Grief is one of the most difficult emotions for humans to process. I’m joined by grief therapist, Deb Antinori, to talk about how you can support yourself with brainspotting, a technique designed to ground and calm yourself. Key Takeaways:
About Deb Antinori Deborah Antinori, MA, LPC, FT, RDT is a Licensed Professional Counselor with 29 years in private practice. She is a Brainspotting Trainer and Certified Consultant. She has been using Brainspotting since its inception in 2003 as she met the developer of Brainspotting, David Grand, in the late ’90s when he was her supervisor for her private practice of therapy. As a grief therapist, Deborah holds her FT, Fellow in Thanatology, from the Association for Death Education and Counseling. She authored a chapter on Grief and Brainspotting in The Power of Brainspotting: An International Anthology. Deborah is the author and narrator of the double award-winning audiobook, Journey Through Pet Loss. (Audie Award - Audio Publishers Association, ForeWord Book of the Year Award – Silver) She is a master's graduate of NYU’s Drama Therapy Dept. Originally an actress, she earned her BFA from the Boston Conservatory of Music and is still in the professional actor’s unions, AEA and SAG/AFTRA. She has begun work on a Ph.D. through the International University for Graduate Studies and is hoping to be able to get to Innsbruck for an EEG study with her mentor, Damir DelMonte, Ph.D., on Brainspotting for her Ph.D. when the travel bans lift. Grief Is Difficult Whether It’s a Pet or a Loved One Deb joins me to talk about the intersection of grief and brainspotting. Grief is one of the most difficult emotions for humans to process, regardless of whether it’s from the death of a loved one, a pet, or a different experience of loss. One of Deb’s specialties is working with people who have lost a pet. The death of our pets impacts many of us just as hard, if not harder than the loss of a loved one. We all know how good it feels to sit and cuddle with our pets when times are tough. That sense of comfort and wholeness gets so many of us through difficult times. That’s one of the biggest reasons losing a pet is difficult. Deb explains what stages of grief look like when our pets die; they’re not altogether dissimilar to when we lose a loved one. Deb talks us through a practice we can use when we’re settling into our feelings of grief. She explains how this practice can help calm us down. It’s called brainspotting, and Deb has been using it since 2003. How Brainspotting Helps You Process Brainspotting helps you process difficult information and return to a state of calm. The three stages brainspotting helps guide you through are survival, homeostasis, and restoration. Our brains are at their best when they’re in homeostasis and restoration. In this episode, Deb actually guides us through the brainspotting process. We take a few minutes to guide ourselves into the right space and sitting, breathing, and feeling our brains return to homeostasis. Just like every new technique, brainspotting is something you need to consistently practice in order for it to have a positive benefit on your life and mental health. When you use it regularly, you’ll have a much easier time of returning to that state of calm. Finally, I really just want to give you permission to be kind to yourself. 2020 has been hard for all of us and it’s absolutely okay if you’re experiencing feelings of grief and overwhelm. I hope that Deb’s advice and brainspotting technique can help you return to your own natural state of homeostasis. Do something to get yourself out of your comfort zone. Collage, dance, chase your dog, watch a new series on Netflix. Get out there so you can get back into your zone. As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com.
In This Episode:
Quotes: “Moving with the feeling in the moment is the best way to help things move in a direction where you can get to the better feelings in time about the wonderful memories.” [12:02] “Each person will do brainspotting differently. They’ll find a way that works for them. Some people find the spot immediately, some other people struggle: that’s where we say, ‘just guess.’ Because, when you guess, you’re using your subcortical brain, and that’s what we really look at in the brain spotting.” [28:46] “Just have an appreciation for what your core brain and system is trying to put together. Be gentle with yourself and don’t expect yourself to be perfect. Don’t put that extra stress on yourself at this time when there are a lot of trauma signals.” [34:24]

03 Jun 2022 | Exploring Kenetik, the Ketone Drink that’s Changing the Way We See Keto with Devon Price and Peter Bayne | 00:44:51
On this week’s episode of the Girlfriend Doctor Show, we had a conversation with the founders of Kenetik, Devon Price and Peter Bayne. On their journey of finding a sustainable diet and exercise regime, they tried the keto diet and found that ketones were the key to sustainable and healthy energy levels and mental clarity. But as we know, keto foods don’t always taste the best so Devon and Peter decided to take matters into their own hands and produce this effective and tasty ketone drink! In this talk, we discuss the many benefits that come from ketones and how they can help with curbing the appetite, intermittent fasting, and how ketones can prevent and possibly reverse Alzheimer’s and other serious neurological diseases and illnesses. Kenetik has now been tested by many groups of people and organizations and many have seen positive results in their daily routine, especially in their fitness regime. In this vast culture of consumerism, we consume things that are not healthy at all and actually cause harm to our bodies so a drink like Kenetik that is sugar-free, doesn’t break fast, enhances our energy levels, as well as balances out our mood receptors, is a home run for me. I for one love the drink, and now, viewers of the Girlfriend Doctor can get 50% off their first purchase with the code, DRANNA50 at drinkkenetik.com! 03 Nov 2020 | How to Heal Pelvic Floor Pain Holistically | 00:44:18
Pelvic floor pain is one of the most common issues we have that no one talks about. I’m joined by my girlfriend, Dr. Brianne Grogan, to talk about how she makes relieving pelvic pain accessible and, dare I say, fun. Key Takeaways The steps to relieve pelvic floor pain at home:
About Dr. Brianne Grogan With nearly 15 million views on YouTube and a 5-star reviewed podcast and book, Dr. Brianne Grogan, PT, DPT is a leading voice in the field of pelvic health and wellness. Her viewers love her for her down-to-earth, compassionate approach and for making pelvic floor fitness fun, mainstream, and accessible. Breathing and Relaxation for Pelvic Floor Pain Pelvic floor pain is a serious condition that you can start treating at home. Dr. Brianne Grogan is here today to talk about what you can do, starting today, to ease the chronic pain that’s so common among both women and men. She takes us right back to basics. If you have pelvic floor pain, some of the things you can start doing to calm it down are deep breathing exercises and relaxing. This might sound easier said than done, but Bri breaks some of these exercises down into really manageable tasks. Bri also talks about the Paradoxical Relaxation method. This approach basically takes a look at how you can relax as much as you can - and from there, accepting where you are. This might mean that you accept you have a certain degree of pelvic pain, but it’s much less than it was before you relaxed. Embrace Your Feminine Energy to Reduce Pelvic Floor Pain Brianne talks a lot about masculine and feminine energy in this episode. These energies exist in both of us and we can embody them both at any given time. While masculine energy is very much in the mind of forcing through the pain, treating pelvic health needs a more nurturing, gentle approach, which comes from our feminine energy. By stepping into our feminine energy, Bri explains some of the techniques we can use to relax our pelvic floor and reduce the pain we have there at home. From self-massage to internal stretching, healthy eating to self-care and relaxation, she lets us know exactly what we can do without a large financial investment. I do want to stress one thing: Bri explains why doing Kegel exercises is counterproductive to reducing pelvic floor pain. Kegels help to strengthen your muscles and focus on contracting your pelvic floor - the exact opposite of what you want to do to relieve any pain you’re having! As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com. In This Episode
Quotes “Focus on effortless letting go. You’re letting go without pushing to make it happen, which is interesting because that brings in the energy, masculine versus feminine energy. It’s a very masculine energy to push and make things happen, “I’m going to make this tension go away!” in a very hard-driving manner. We’re doing a very feminine approach to releasing the tension. Let’s see what can let go naturally.” [13:25] “It’s not that it’s in your head, it’s not that you’re making up the pain at all. It’s just that there are some responses that we need to unlearn.” [17:37] “What we need is actually to release the muscles. Kegels are really the last thing you want to do if you have pelvic pain and tension.” [25:32] Resources Mentioned Heal Pelvic Pain at Home, Holistically Find Dr. Brianne Grogan Online Follow Dr. Brianne Grogan on Facebook | Instagram | YouTube | Pinterest Listen to Dr. Bri Talks Lady Bits on Apple Podcasts | Spotify Join the KetoGreen Community on Facebook Buy Keto-Green 16 Check out the full episode page Follow Dr. Anna on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter Related Episodes: 154: How to Unlearn What You Were Taught About Suffering w/ Sarah Anne Stewart

She also shares how her husband started taking it, too, and he’s had more energy than he’s had in years. I believe that men can learn a lot from The Hormone Fix. While it’s targeted to peri- and menopausal women, the information contained about hormone health is universal. Lisa and her husband took part in parts of my Magic Menopause program together and he found a lot of benefit from learning alongside her. What is your sexy, younger you statement? Let me know in the KetoGreen Community with Dr. Anna Cabeca.
In This Episode:
Quotes: “In The Hormone Fix, Dr. Anna takes the mystery out of understanding our hormones and gives practical advice that is simple and easy to follow.” (1:42) “In chapter 8 of The Hormone Fix, Dr. Anna helps us to realize that stress prevents us from living our best life and she helps us see how we can get stress under control no matter the source.” (3:08)

15 Nov 2024 | Hot Menopause Questions Answered - Pt. 2 | 00:45:26
Menopause questions still piling up? I’m back with my daughter Amira for Part 2 of “Hot Menopause Questions - Answered,” because there’s so much more to talk about! Last time, we covered some of the biggest changes—those first signs of perimenopause, sleep struggles, and managing hot flashes. Now, we’re diving into the nitty-gritty topics you’ve been asking about, like how to handle those “where did my libido go?” days, what’s up with brain fog, and why bone health is something we need to pay attention to sooner rather than later.
We’re also tackling some things that don’t always come up in regular health conversations, like how checking your urine pH can reveal a lot about your body, or why painful intercourse doesn’t have to be just “part of aging.” I’ll share the real stuff—tips that can help with intimacy, boost your mood, and clear that brain fog with a few easy tweaks. And if you’re curious about natural alternatives to hormone therapy, Amira and I have got you covered with practical advice that you can actually use to feel better every day.
Also, if you’ve been feeling like your energy’s been on the low side lately, I can’t say enough about Mighty Maca Plus. I created it to help with exactly these kinds of things—mood swings, hot flashes, and that “just not feeling like myself” vibe. So many women have shared with me how it’s become their go-to for feeling energized and balanced. Give it a try and see what it can do for you!

Getting diagnosed with breast cancer is one of the most life-changing experiences a person can face—but there’s power in how you choose to walk through it. Today, I’m sitting down again with my dear friend Dr. Filomena Trindade, an incredible physician and a pioneer in Integrative and Functional Medicine, who faced her own battle with Stage 4 breast cancer and chose an incredible path blending traditional and holistic treatments. From vitamin C and artemisinin, she shares her journey of healing and how she created a body environment that was less welcoming to cancer. It’s a beautiful conversation about trusting your gut, honoring your body’s needs, and exploring every option with an open mind.
Dr. Filomena’s journey reveals the importance of listening to your intuition and building a strong support network to uplift you every step of the way. Her story is a powerful reminder that healing is deeply personal and that there’s no one “right” way to find wellness. If you or a loved one are navigating health challenges, this episode will leave you feeling empowered and ready to think differently about what’s possible.

08 Dec 2019 | The Truth About A Healthy Life Beyond The Pill | 00:39:11
Taking the hormonal birth control pill might be preventing unwanted pregnancy, but it could also be masking, or even causing, a whole host of chronic health conditions. Dr. Jolene Brighten, the author of Beyond the Pill, is here today, along with my daughter, Amanda, to talk about the effects of the pill on our bodies and what alternative birth control methods are available. Jolene is an expert in women’s health, nutrition, contraception, and hormone imbalances. She works with women to reclaim their natural health, cycle, and rhythm. Having been on the birth control pill for 10 years when she was younger, she knows how it can devastate your body’s natural health, though she isn’t completely anti-pill. Jolene just wants to help you find the best healthcare for you. Many doctors will put young women on the pill to help manage painful or long periods, amongst other things, but those symptoms could actually be caused by a chronic condition such as PCOS. Jolene explains why we shouldn’t try to just mask these symptoms but should endeavor to find the route cause of them. The effects of being on the birth control pill long-term can also last long into menopause! And did you know that your gut health can actually impact your period? If you have extremely painful periods, it could be due to food intolerance, like dairy, or poor gut health, like leaky gut or SIBO. Plus, there are so many links between the pill and cancer. So what do you to prevent pregnancy when you don’t want to risk using the pill? There are so many other non-hormonal contraceptive methods out there. Jolene also talks about the benefits of the barrier method, both male and female condoms, and you might be surprised that they’re not just to prevent pregnancy! The most important thing to understand is that what works for you might not work for the other women in your family. Birth control is personal to you, so figure out what method is best for you, your circumstances, and your health. Do you have painful periods? How comfortable are you with your current method of birth control? Are you entering menopause in the healthiest way possible for you?
In This Episode:
Quotes: “Women should have all the information they need to make the best decision for themselves about the birth control pill.” (3:59) “Birth control was designed for a healthy, young female patient who didn’t want to have a baby - yet - it was never designed to be this indefinite thing that we’re just left on, never to ovulate, never to have a natural cycle. And it was never designed for the management of chronic disease.” (9:16) “Once women start to understand what is going on in their natural cycle, they can see where there’s issues and where there never was issues.” (25:04) “How can a woman ever have a boundary if she’s never been given permission by society to have a boundary? One way we can do that, that serves us as well, is by having our own boundaries and not apologize for taking what we need and leaving what we don’t.” (35:42)

27 Oct 2019 | How To Conquer Your Acid Reflux | 00:29:21
Acid reflux and GERD is a chronic stomach issue for many Americans, with growing numbers of people taking Prilosec or other long-term acid reflux medication for 10+ years. This is so unhealthy! Jenn Malecha, a holistic health coach, joins me to talk about why people get GERD and how they can correct their stomach issues. Jenn is a natural health coach who was diagnosed with skin cancer at the age of 26. This surprise diagnosis had no real external indicators that something was going wrong, but when she started looking at her hormones and internal health, she discovered that she has imbalances that contributed to her skin cancer, and later in life, to Hashimoto’s. What Jenn discovered when she took it upon herself to investigate her health was an overgrowth of H Pylori in her gut. She found the same bacteria in her father-in-law’s guts and has helped him come off the Prilosec he’d been on for over 10 years. Now, he only needs to worry about having acid reflux when he eats food that he has sensitivities to. I’d argue that the unlimited refill culture here in America is contributing to the prevalence of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and acid reflux because our stomachs are designed to produce acid to help digest our food. But if we’re dousing these fires with unlimited liquid, we’re not going to be digesting our food all that well. This is a similar problem that taking acid-reducing medication like Prilosec causes - reducing your stomach acid below healthy levels. So actually, you don’t have an overproduction of stomach acid, but an underproduction, which causes a whole host of health issues. What should we do to help our stomach acid production? Slow down while we’re eating our food, don’t drink too much with your meal, and fast overnight, including water, to give your digestion a chance to rest and reset. Have you been taking acid-reduction medicine for longer than 6 months? Do you take advantage of unlimited refills? Have you ever had your gut health checked out? In This Episode:
Quotes: “I recognize that the sun is my friend. I think that you still need to be careful when you go out in the sun because the ozone layer is not as dense as it used to be, so we do need to be careful - but it’s important to get sun exposure.” (8:49) “A lot of the traditional medical systems will run a breath test or blood test to look for H Pylori. I’ve found that there’s no such thing as the perfect test. Just because you get a negative on one of those tests doesn’t mean that you can rule it out if you’re still suffering from acid reflux or GERD.” (14:34) “What you’re experiencing today is an accumulation of everything that’s happened over your lifetime.” (25:20) Links Find Jenn Malecha on Instagram | YouTube | Facebook

04 Aug 2019 | How To Nurture Your Relationships Through Communication | 01:22:14
Nurturing your feminine side when in your household and your relationship will help strengthen your bond with your husband. All too often, women are seeing an increase in their testosterone levels, which is making us feel less comforted and nurtured at home. Today’s guest, John Gray, author of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, joins me today to discuss how we can nurture our masculine and feminine hormones to create stronger relationships. John has been researching and coaching couples for over 40 years, and he’s sharing what he’s learned about relationships, communication, and having a healthy sex life. To start off, he explains why men are seeing a decrease in their testosterone levels as they grow older, and what you can do to combat this. By opening lines of communication with your partner, you can help nurture their testosterone or estrogen production. John explains what happens when women feel their emotions building up, with little things adding to their problems. And how expressing your emotions and simply talking to your partner can help release that pent up energy. Relationships are all about communication. Men are more likely to do the things you want them to do by simply asking them confidently, not complaining or nagging them. And when you can talk openly to your partner and are comfortable being emotionally naked with them, you’re in a better place to get physically naked. Sex is such an important part of our romantic relationships. John talks us through how we, as women, can encourage a healthier sex life, and how men can prevent their own ejaculation to make sex a longer, more pleasurable experience for both partners. Do you have a healthy sex life with your partner? How do you keep open, honest communication in your relationship? What do you do to nurture your partner’s dominant hormones?
In This Episode:
Quotes: “Sex becomes the doorway for men to open their heart. Women don’t understand this because women have to open their heart first before they fully enjoy sex. So it’s the love that allows women to feel more sexually alive.” (10:48) “Connection is a woman’s greatest need. A man’s greatest need is to feel successful. Success increases testosterone. Connection increases progesterone and estrogen, and oxytocin. Which we know, hormonally, is essential for women’s well-being.” (17:49) “You can’t fully feel your positive emotions if you can’t fully feel your negative emotions.” (35:29)

08 Nov 2018 | Confused About Bio-Identical Hormones During Menopause? | 00:55:34
Controversy and Clinical Insights into the Health Effects and Breast CancerToday on Couch Talk I am talking with Dr. Edwin Lee. He is a past Couch Talk guest and one of the best physicians I know. And we’re talking about one of my favorite topics, the use of bio-identical hormones in the treatment of menopausal symptoms in women. Dr. Lee believes that the best way to treat hormonal imbalance is by natural bio-identical hormone therapy. Natural hormones are the exact and identical hormones that are made in your body (versus synthetic hormones which are not chemically structured the same as in your body). He feels that the use of bioidentical hormones with estradiol, estriol, progesterone and or testosterone in women is essential, whereas the use of testosterone in men is crucial to prevent early mortality. Dr. Lee combines functional medicine to determine the root problem with the use of bioidentical hormones to help his patients achieve wellness – along with an emphasis on improving on diet, lifestyle, and nutrition. Listen to the interview: A Great Way to Kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month! It’s the start of Breast Cancer Awareness month, so this Couch Talk interview was very well timed! We talked a lot about our own patient and clinical outcomes over our decades of combined practices in using bio-identical hormones to treat hot flashes, depression, anxiety, mood swings, vaginal atrophy and other symptoms commonly seen in menopause. We also talked a lot about the confusion relating to breast cancer risk. In thisinterview, you will learn,
And We Covered So Much More!
Why is it that less than 1% of women who have taken HRT therapy in his clinical practice have developed breast cancer (compared to 11% of women developing breast cancer in the general population)? We discussed both of our clinical observations as to what the answer to this might be. Finally, we talked about our “polite disagreements” with the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (of which Dr. Lee is a member) recently stating in a position paper that they do not recommend the use of bio-identical hormone therapy in many cases… What? Well...we both feel that endocrinologists already use bio-identical hormone therapy all of the time for standard care with insulin, cortisol, thyroid, progesterone, testosterone, transdermal estradiol, etc.! So what is going on in this position paper? Is it the definition of what is “synthetic” versus “natural”? Is it a bit of bias from the Big Pharm companies? Such an interesting discussion with my favorite endocrinologist! Meet Dr. Edwin LeeA little bit about Dr. Edwin Lee, and I hope you’ll listen to our interview in the audio posted above! He’s board-certified in internal medicine, endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism, and has completed special training in regenerative and functional medicine. He is an author and an international speaker and educator. Dr. Lee founded the Institute for Hormonal Balance in 2008. Currently, he is the Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. In addition to writing his books, including two awesome children’s books, one called, Your Awesome Brain, and the other is Your Amazing Heart—I highly recommend these—he’s written, for those of us that really want to get a better understanding on hormones, a couple of other books. 28 Jul 2020 | Healing From The Five Stages Of Betrayal | 00:50:19
Recovering from a betrayal, whether your partner cheated or your best friend shared your deepest secrets, is a process. I’m joined by Dr. Debi Silber to talk about her work helping women discover their Post Betrayal Transformations. About Dr. Debi Silber Dr. Debi Silber is a holistic psychologist, the founder of The Post Betrayal Transformation Institute. She’s a recognized health, mindset, empowerment, and personal development expert and speaker, coach, and author. Debi specializes in helping women heal after experiencing betrayal. After researching and conducting a Ph.D. study on how we experience betrayal from a family member or partner, Debi discovered a predictable and proven process that takes people from betrayal to breakthrough. That process, coupled with 28 years of health, mindset and personal development training and coaching, enabled her to create a multi-pronged approach to help people heal (physically, mentally, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually) from the trauma of betrayal. About This Episode In this episode, Debi joins me to talk about her work with the Post Betrayal Transformation Institute. She explains the three reasons why most people are unable to move on from betrayal. These reasons are not always something we do consciously, but recognizing them allows us space to work through the betrayal. Debi’s favorite three steps are to face it, feel it, and heal it. When we actually take the time to face and acknowledge the betrayal, we can start to feel it. And it’s only when we actually feel our feelings and work through them that we can begin to heal. Being betrayed and holding the feelings associated with it has a lasting impact. That impact is not just on our emotional health, but our physical and mental, too. It’s imperative that you find your way through these feelings so you can heal your body. Debi talks about the five stages of betrayal. Like grief, our bodies and minds need to work through these stages in order to heal. Debi explains what happens when you don’t go through these stages or, even further than this, refuse to accept your betrayal altogether. Finally, Debi talks us through a relatively simple activity that can help you start to heal your betrayal right now. Healing is a process; the earlier you start your journey, the sooner healing can begin. Are you struggling to work through a betrayal? You’re not alone. As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com.
In This Episode:
Quotes: “It’s the hardest thing in the world because you really have to go through it saying, “I have no expectation of what’s going to show up, but I know I have to heal. That’s my priority.” (22:50) “When you feel safe and valued, you forgive, you feel better. When you do not feel safe and valued, and you forgive, you do not feel better. I take it one step further and say: when you feel safe and valued, and you reconcile, then you can feel better. When you do not feel safe and valued when you reconcile, well, you can’t do that.” (32:29) “Transformation happens when you tell yourself the truth.” (40:27)

Do you feel as if you’re losing your memory? Ability to recall? Forgetting names? Misplaced your keys? Minni Mental-Pause’s? Walking into a room and forgetting why you're there? Yes, we can all have these moments, but what I noticed with my patients is that they are more worried about this with age. Maybe someone close to you has dementia or memory issues; it’s really distressing. Stress, is certainly a factor in memory loss too. I know this too well. Not only acutely, but longterm stressors affect memory. It is for this reason I work on memory and mental techniques to sharpen my memory as well as the nutritional support and exercise components. One of my mentors that I am thrilled to share with you is Jim Kwik who is a master at memory and “Kwik Learning” as his name conveniently implies! In my recent CouchTalk, I was blessed to interview Jim and he shared a wealth of information. Please listen in. He gave so much useful information we can apply into our life right now. In fact after our call that evening, I taught my 7 yo daughter one of his techniques and she mastered her spelling list in less than 5 minutes! (This typically took 30! Kids learn much faster, I took a bit longer to memorize my grocery list.) Here’s what you’ll learn:
He also gave so many tweetable quotes I have to share a few of my favorites here: Listen via my podcast or watch on YouTube. I’m thrilled to bring this information to you. If your brain is like mine, it needs some exercise! Additionally, Jim has given you a series of video trainings free. 07 Jun 2022 | Food as Medicine for Healthy and Radiant Skin with Maria Marlowe | 00:34:55
On this week’s episode of the Girlfriend Doctor Show, I had a conversation with Maria Marlowe. Maria is an Acne Nutritionist, helping people of all different shapes and sizes achieve their acne-free skin they truly deserve. Maria approaches healthy skin through the use of healthy foods and healthy lifestyle habits. We discuss many topics in this interview but the main topics Maria emphasizes are paying attention to our body’s signals, how inflammation can lead to leaky gut and gut dysbiosis, and what foods to eat that will help you diminish your acne. Once again, we are informed that the food we eat can be the main cause for our health problems. Many people talk about how refined sugars and carbs are the main causes for inflammation in the body and how it can be detrimental to our health. But not many show you exactly how to replace those foods with healthier, and sometimes tastier, options. For those who want to dive deeper on healthy foods for healthier skin, be sure to visit Maria’s website, mariamarlowe.com! KEY TAKEAWAYS [4:51] Using food as medicine for clear and healthy skin [7:28] Make the connection between gut health and skin [13:42] Best foods to eat to combat inflammation [24:54] Digestive bitters for improving digestion system [26:31] Maria’s famous beet brownie recipe HOW TO CONNECT WITH OUR GUEST MEMORABLE QUOTES “It’s really important to pay attention to your body and the signals your body is telling you in order to find or figure out the optimal diet for you in particular.” “In acne in particular, and of course for hormone health, in general, we know that a high glycemic diet is not benefitting us and it’s really important to maintain a low glycemic diet; I would say that’s one of the most important things we can do for our skin.” “The research is really showing that what’s going on in our gut can manifest into our skin, and so people with acne or other inflammatory skin conditions tend to have gut dysbiosis.” “The research now all points to, for the last twenty years, is pointing to inflammation as really the spark that lights your acne on fire, so to speak.” “So that’s why focusing on gut health, repairing the gut, repairing leaky gut, making sure you have a good balance of bacteria in there that’s going to support reducing inflammation in the body, that’s going to be key to clearing acne.” “Definitely more plants. We want to consume more fiber; that’s going to help keep our blood sugar stable. We want a variety of different fruits and vegetables, and depending on where you are with your digestion, you might want to tread really slowly.” “Starting your day with an arugula salad is going to help your body better digest whatever comes after it.”

We also get into the emotional side of it all, the mood swings and irritability that seem to come out of nowhere. 17 Mar 2020 | Announcing The Girlfriend Doctor Podcast | 00:44:34
Introducing: The Girlfriend Doctor. I am so excited to share my rebrand with you! I’ve been working with the incredible brand strategist Nancy Hala, CEO of BrandStory, to develop a brand that truly resonates with me. It was actually Nancy who started calling me The Girlfriend Doctor after I was on her podcast. She said it was like chatting with your girlfriend… but your medically trained girlfriend who actually has the answer to your most personal health questions. That’s how The Girlfriend Doctor was born and I’ve been working with Nancy to bring it to life. Nancy asks me what we need to know about dealing with Coronavirus, the current pandemic sweeping the world. My advice in these times of isolation is to find ways to increase your oxytocin. This helps reduce the fear that many of us are experiencing while boosting your immune system. Do your best to connect with your friends, family, and community, even if it has to be online. I explain why the pelvis is the most important area of your body and how to keep it in tip-top condition, especially during this pandemic. Giving you the information you need in order to take charge of your own health is what I do as The Girlfriend Doctor. Having the knowledge to take charge and make our own decisions is a game-changer, ladies! Nancy and I talk about why it’s not just what you put in your body, but how you live that’s going to impact your life. And, did you know that following a strictly keto diet actually isn’t that healthy for women over 40? I talk about this a lot in my new book, Keto-Green 16, which you can pre-order now. Lastly, Nancy and I touch on what happens when we change our entire way of thinking. Our words and thoughts impact the world around us, so being more open and receptive to change is important. We also talk about why it’s so important when we talk to our parents and children about sexual and menstrual health! I want to answer all your questions! So please, ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com.

I’m going to give you the information and the solutions but it’s really your choice to do it. Then you own it and the results are even better than you can imagine.” (20:12) “It’s more than about what we eat. It has everything to do with how we balance our female hormones, how we boost our immune system, how we fight inflammation, and then have energy, clarity, and focus.” (44:37)

On This episode of the Girlfriend Doctor, we had a conversation with Dr. Mindy Pelz, a fasting expert and author of Fast like a Girl! She is making fasting accessible and safe for women to practice in their daily lives. The key is to build awareness of your cycle and strategically plan your fasting to support your hormones. By tapping into your body’s wisdom, you can reap the full health and spiritual benefits of fasting. It is no coincidence that most cultures practice fasting because it allows your body and mind to cleanse. Fasting is known to increase your energy and by integrating fasting into your life you can live longer, healthier and happier lives. Your energy is often reflected back at you by those around you and fasting is a natural way to clear negativity and gain clarity in moments of turmoil.

MEMORABLE QUOTES “I see a lot of evidence that you are rebooting dopamine receptor sites, you know if you really want to heal the body, you get to know yourself in a 72 hour fast. I love the longer fasts for women they just have to be timed to a woman’s cycle if she still has it” [2:48]
“If we look at a woman’s menstrual cycle, when hormones go high during ovulation and the week before our period, that’s when things have to change and each one of those sections have to be a little bit different.” [11:35]
“ When you’re fasting you’re changing your whole microbiome in your gut and when we look at some of the critics of fasting there’s a lot of people, mostly men, that are saying, no it’s bad for the microbiome. Well, what it’s doing is you’re breaking down the old and you’re bringing back the new.” [20:40]
“When you take water out of the equation, you force your body to go find other areas it stores water and burn that.” [36:40]

28 Apr 2020 | The Link Between Your Beliefs & Your Longevity | 00:53:31
You can control your health and how long you live by examining your deeply held belief systems and resolving generational trauma. How? This episode with Dr. Mario Martinez explores the links between cultural beliefs and longevity. About Dr. Mario MartinezDr. Martinez is a clinical neuropsychologist who specializes in how cultural beliefs affect health and longevity. He proposes, based on credible research evidence, that longevity is learned and the causes of health are inherited. He has studied healthy centenarians (100 years or older) worldwide and found that only 20 to 25% can be attributed to genetics - the rest is related to how they live and the cultural beliefs they share. He is the author of the bestselling book, The MindBody Code: How to Change the Beliefs that Limit Your Health, Longevity, and Success that teaches his theory and practice of biocognitive science to the general public. In addition to longevity, he also explains why our immune system is not just a protector. Instead, it responds to the cultural premises we learn to perceive the world. In this episode, Dr. Mario explains why some cultures live longer and how we can adopt some of their beliefs and practices in our own lives. He also shares the scientific basis for how generational trauma happens and what we can do to heal from this. Dr. Mario also talks about the creative outcome from discipline and positive patterns. You know one of my favorite hormones is Oxytocin - the love hormone - well, Dr. Mario talks about what some daily activities are that will increase our Oxytocin and why we should. His research into centenarians has revealed the true role of Oxytocin plays in our longevity. He also shares how creating and following simple rituals can increase your lifespan. We talk about how this collective quarantine we’re experiencing with the Coronavirus can actually alter the way our minds work. What was important to you before this supervirus might not hold the same weight when we’re through this health crisis. What we need to do in order to increase our longevity is to create our own eudemonic pleasure. This is a simple part of your daily life, like taking a shot of rum at the end of the day, which brings you pleasure for no other reason than creating joy. For you, this might look like regular phone calls with your friends, an indulgence that fills your cup, or even a morning run. Do you have any daily rituals or eudemonic pleasures you participate in? As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com. In This Episode:
Quotes:“That’s a powerful statement. Embody your truth, essentially, embody what is true to you versus the lies that have been told about you. Embody what’s true to you and practice it.” (19:15) “Find out what is good about your culture and see what you’re not doing that your culture taught you that you can incorporate. Then, also look at how your culture limited you. And, sometimes even berated you, and begin to question that.” (43:22) “The antidote for shame is honor-consciousness. And I use honor-consciousness as an anti-inflammatory.” (49:39) LinksPre-Order Keto-Green 16 to get a sneak peek and free gifts! 19 May 2019 | Keto-Green™ Q&A | 00:21:02
Keto-Green is the way of eating, and living I developed when I entered perimenopause, and I’ve shared it in the hope that it helps other women combat the changes their bodies go through during this time. With a foundation in the keto diet, I emphasize alkaline foods and ensuring your body maintains a neutral pH. Not only has KetoGreen helped women manage their changing bodies, many of lost weight following it! Have you ever wondered how to know if your body is in ketosis? In this episode, I talk about why you need to test your urine to make sure you’re in - and staying in - ketosis. When our bodies metabolize in ketosis, we’re functioning at our best, and this promotes weight loss, as well. However, while it’s important to stay in ketosis, it’s also super vital that we’re maintaining a neutral pH level. By eating alkaline foods and regularly testing our urine’s pH levels, we can keep some of the side effects of the keto diet at bay. I also cover what a typical Keto-Green plate consists of, and what foods we should all be striving to eat every single day. Eating a variety of food is important, but we all need to make sure we’re consuming lots of leafy greens daily. Then I take some questions from within my KetoGreen Community on Facebook and answer them! These questions are so insightful and have definitely brought up points that so many people on the Keto-Green diet have considered. What can help one can usually help many! If you have any questions about following the Keto-Green diet, definitely join my Facebook group and share with the community. Do you know when your body is in ketosis? How do you maintain a healthy pH balance to do your best to avoid symptoms like keto breath and keto crotch? What kind of foods are you eating on your Keto-Green diet? In This Episode:
Quotes: “Keto-Green is getting our body into a state of ketosis and working together to get our body nourished so that our urine pH is alkaline.” (2:22) “Greens add fiber, they add alkalinizers, they’re loaded with nutrients to help support detoxification, as well, and that’s critical to healthy hormone balance.” (6:24) “I recommend drinking a tall glass of water when you wake up, because you want to rehydrate right away.” (11:44) Links Join the KetoGreen Community on Facebook

11 Oct 2022 | The Miracle of Algae: The Future of Fast Food And Reversing the Aging Process With Catharine Arnston | 00:45:13
On this episode of The Girlfriend Doctor, I look at why algae is so important in your diet, and acts as a superfood. Joining me today is Catharine Arnston, the founder and Chief Scientific Officer of ENERGYbits. She is an expert in algae for wellness in nutrition, beauty, biohacking, mitochondria, and longevity. Algae was actually the first life on earth 4 billion years ago and is now known to be the most nutrient-dense food in the world. Two forms of algae in particular are considered superfoods -- spirulina and chlorella. You can take these in a dried pill form but they must be raw algae, dried at low heat for the nutrients to survive. They offer a multitude of benefits -- your hunger will be cut, your energy will be increased and your brain fog will go away. They contain zero carbs, and contain the critical antioxidants that can stop free radical damage in your mitochondria, promoting anti-aging. Spirulina and chlorella work harmoniously together. Spirulina works in the morning for energizing, appetite control and mental focus, and chlorella works to cleanse, detox, repair and restore during sleep.
KEY TAKEAWAYS [4:15] How Catherine’s sister’s breast cancer brought about exploring algae [5:15] Why algae is the most nutrient-dense food in the world [28:42] Why an alkaline diet is so important and how it can fight cancer [34:38] The role of mitochondria in the body and free radicals [35:20] The four most important antioxidants in your body [37:09] How to reverse the aging process with algae

MEMORABLE QUOTES “When I started the company, it was to really make a difference in the world and people's health. We chose spirulina and chlorella because they are the two nutrient-dense algaes that are around and available and have been grown for 50 years.” “One tablet has the same nutrition as an entire plate of vegetables, except you didn't have to carry it home from the grocery store, clean, cook, and eat it. It's instant.” “It's the future of fast food because if you can swallow water, you can take five or ten of these spirulina tablets in the morning. Your hunger will be cut, your energy will be increased, your brain fog will go away. It's ketogenic, zero carbs. It's the answer to everything.” “All the Asian countries, particularly Japan, they don't leave their house without taking chlorella, algae, probably spirulina too. And they're world recognized for having the best longevity, lowest cancer rates, lowest obesity rates, and great skin and hair.” “The average adult in America now has 800 toxins in their body. But even if you lived in a bubble, your body constantly is regenerating its cells. We have 30 trillion cells and dead cells are toxic. They clog up your lymphatic system.”

26 May 2019 | How To Perfect Your Pelvic Floor Exercise Routine | 00:29:15
A staggering 30 million women worldwide suffer from pelvic pain, and it’s not only those who have had children. In fact, most women go without talking about their pelvic floor out of embarrassment and confusion. A proper pelvic floor exercise routine will help so many aspects of your life, from your sexual and anatomy health to your physical health and wellbeing. Today’s guest is Isa Herrera, pelvic floor physical therapist, and we’re talking about everything you need to know about having a healthy pelvic floor. Isa first began her research into the pelvic floor after having a baby but also gaining a lot of pelvic pain and frustration. Her leaky bladder and feeling pressure and pain all the time led her back to her OB/GYN who just told her to do Kegel exercises. But they didn’t work for Isa. Kegel exercises. Most women have heard of them, but do you know how to do them properly? We move away from the term Kegel to talk about the over 25 different pelvic floor exercises to support female health. By learning how to connect with your body and your pelvic floor exercises, you’ll start to improve your problems, day by day. We also talk about how important it is to educate our daughters about their anatomy and Isa gives a surprising example of her daughter’s classmate’s lack of knowledge. We need to empower and honor our pelvic floor health in a way our children can grasp and understand so they don’t have these problems or questions later in life. Do you practice pelvic floor exercises every day? Are you in a constant state of compression? How do you talk to your children about their sexual health? In This Episode:
Quotes: “All pelvic floor exercises, when it involves a contraction, have three things in common. The clitoris should nod, the area between anus and vagina should pucker, and the anus should wink. Those three parts should happen simultaneously. ” (7:32) “If you can see it, then you can fix what’s not working.” (8:51) “Before you can do a pelvic floor exercise, you’ve got to bring the mind-body connection to it.” (12:31) “How do I go about this in a very holistic, honoring way for my child that she gets it, honors it, and knows that she can communicate and ask questions.” (21:01) Links Grab your Free The Perfect Kegel Checklist Find Isa Herrera, MSPT, CSCS Online Follow Isa on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter

30 Aug 2016 | Unleashing the Power of Your Brain; the Importance of Resilience in Surviving Trauma, Stress & Fear | 00:58:37
I interviewed a good friend and a superstar of neuroscience, Dr. Srini Pillay. You absolutely must listen to this interview, just so excellent and fascinating. He has over 17 years of experience in brain imaging and has an international reputation as a human behavior expert with special emphasis on stress and anxiety. Srini is a world renowned Harvard Psychiatrist, a brain expert and he is the award winning author of the excellent book, Life Unlocked: 7 Revolutionary Lessons to Overcome Fear. He is Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Invited Faculty at Harvard Business School. Srini is also the founder and CEO of Neuro Business Group, voted one of the top twenty movers and shakers in leadership development in the world and is noted for his uncanny ability to translate complex brain science into usable tips. He is wildly sought out by the media and has been featured on the Dr. Laura Bergman Show, on Oprah radio, Martha Stewart whole living, Elle, Cosmopolitan, Fox News, The New York Times, and numerous other media outlets. Srini aims to help people understand how we can all unleash the power of our brains to live happier and more productive lives. In our interview, Dr. Pillay talked about the importance of a person’s resilience, as a key differentiator, when it comes to dealing with stress and thriving after a trauma. He uses a wonderful visual of a flashlight. The ability to consciously choose to shine your flashlight away from the stress, to shine it on a more positive outcome or feeling; that allows one to be resilient. People who continue to shine their flashlight on the fear or anxiety, relive the experience. If the emotion is about a bad breakup, a person may be so fearful and anxious that they go from one relationship to another. Stress precipitates habit; it is called “repetition compulsion”, and seen in PTSD victims. So how does one increase their resilience? How does a person gain control over their flashlight? Dr. Pillay gives us an overview as to how people can reduce their anxiety and deal with their fears and stresses. He reviews his “C.I.R.C.A.” model which stands for: Chunking, Ignore the threatening narrative, Reality check, Control check, and Attentional shift. All of these have significant research behind them and can help balance your anxiety. Dr. Pillay says that research has proven that anyone can train their brain to think and react differently. So fascinating…the mind has a profound impact on our physiology. It can sabotage you, or help you heal.

Her passion for cleansing the gut started from an early age when her and her mother would examine their weekly movements to try to see what was up with their health. Now known as the Queen of Thrones, Dr. Marisol helps women diagnose and treat health issues and tame menopausal symptoms by looking at their poop. Find out exactly what Dr. Marisol’s 11 golden nuggets are and how they relate to your gut, mental, and spiritual health. You’ll also learn how much you should be pooping every day (hint: probably more than you think) and why you should be aiming for movements that don’t smell and leave behind no mess. And lastly, you’ll find out how menopause affects your bowel health and why castor oil becomes such an important supplement as you age. Do you have a bowel movement every day? Do you know what the color of your poop can indicate? How do you connect your gut health to your spiritual health? In This Episode:
Quotes: “If you’re constipated, you feel bloated, your pants don’t fit, you feel just horrible: foggy brains, you feel off/sick, and then when you’re running to the bathroom all the time, you’re scared to have a social life because first thing you do when you go somewhere new is to scope out the bathroom - because heaven forbid you have an accident.” (4:26) “I cannot get a patient healthy if they are not having regular brown banana bowel movements.” (7:11) “The digestive tract is like Toronto’s Union Station: a central hub where everything happens.” (12:51) Links Find Dr. Marisol Online Follow Dr. Marisol on Facebook | Instagram

For sleep, I use Night-Zzz for a nourishing night of rest, and Balance cream to moisturize and keep hormones balanced. I have many more tips to share with you, so please listen to the podcast! But before I go, I want to emphasize that the most important thing to do when traveling is to prioritize yourself. That includes nourishing yourself, being kind to yourself and forgiving yourself when you go off plan. Happy travels!

10 Mar 2019 | How To Fix Your Brain | 00:51:25
Brain fog, menstrual memory, dementia, and Alzheimer's are all conditions and diseases that affect our brain. All of us worry about those times when we forget something, and in our 20s and 30s it’s usually not a big deal. But when we get older, into our 50s, 60s, and beyond, the concern can definitely be real -- are we losing our memories for good? Oftentimes, the cause for these illnesses starts well before we’re even aware that we have a problem, but there is good news. You can fix your brain! And today’s guest and expert, Dr. Tom O’Bryan, is here to tell you how. Dr. Tom O’Bryan is a leading expert, author, and specialist, studying how gluten-containing foods impact our gut. He’s basically the Sherlock Holmes of chronic disease. His latest research shows the links between gluten, the gut, and the brain and highlights how important it is to have good immune health. Today we’re talking about the changes your body goes through that means you might test positive for Celiac disease later in life. We learn about oral intolerance and explain why it’s something you need to understand to start managing your gut symptoms. Plus, we’re looking at the factors in early to mid-life that can contribute to issues, gut symptoms, and poor brain health later in life. Dr. Tom also goes over what simple changes you can make in your diet and fitness routine to help promote healthy brain function. Finally, we’re looking at the blood tests you can ask your doctor for if you’re really worried. Are you worried about your memory? Do you suffer from brain fog? What changes to your diet have you made to try to help your symptoms? In This Episode:
Quotes: “These tests that - in general doctors use that tell you are you sick? Or are you healthy?- Can actually be interpreted from 'where are you on the scale?” (6:45) “70% of people with a sensitivity to wheat have hypoperfusion of the brain, a decreased blood supply to the brain.” (12:58) “When your ovaries start shutting down it’s the job of your adrenal glands to start ramping up and making about 1/10th the estrogen that your ovaries used to make.” (27:48) Links Find Dr. Tom O’Bryan Online Follow Dr. Tom O’Bryan on Facebook | LinkedIn | Twitter Pick up your copy of You Can Fix Your Brain and all of Dr. O’Bryan’s bonuses Download the first chapter of You Can Fix Your Brain Learn more about Vibrant Labs
04 Aug 2020 | Manifesting All The Luck You Need | 00:49:01
Do you feel like the luckiest person in the world? If not, why not? Learn how you can create more luck in your life by following these practices shared by my guests, Gay Hendricks and Carol Kline, authors of Conscious Luck. About Gay Hendricks and Carol Kline Gay Hendricks, Ph.D., has served for more than forty years as one of the major contributors to the fields of relationship transformation and body-mind therapies. He is a New York Times bestselling author and his books include Conscious Loving and The Big Leap. Carol Kline has devoted her career to teaching, writing, and speaking about consciousness and personal growth. She is the #1 New York Times bestselling co-author of Happy for No Reason, Love for No Reason, five books in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. Together, they wrote Conscious Luck: Eight Secrets to Intentionally Change Your Fortune. About This Episode This episode was an absolute joy to record. Speaking with and learning from Gay and Carol about what luck actually is and how to manifest more of it in your life was enlightening. First of all, they break down why exactly luck isn’t just about luck. You’re likely familiar with the phrase, “you make your own luck.” And it’s true - to an extent. Luck is about being open to the great abundance of the universe coupled with living a joyful and grateful life. So how can you increase the luck in your life? Gay and Carol share about the luck factor and some of the ways you can improve this in your daily existence. One of the major aspects of improving your luck is to adopt a radical gratitude practice. They don’t mean you should force gratitude when you can’t see anything to be grateful for, but to try to look for something you can be grateful for in any situation. By looking for things you can be grateful for, you actually train your brain to be more positive and see the good more often than not. Gay and Carol explain why this practice increases your luck - it’s all about raising your overall vibration. Gay and Carol talk about other ways you can increase your luck: creating a luck-worthy goal. When you have a goal in mind that not only elevates you but other people, the universe will help you out. Another aspect of this is how much goodness comes when your head is in line with your heart’s desire to do good. Lastly, Gay and Carol share some practices we can adopt today so we can start achieving our lucky goals. These are simple ways that help change our mindset into one more open and willing to accept luck and the joyful abundance of the universe. Are you ready to create your own luck? What are you grateful for today? As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com.
In This Episode:
Quotes: “It really begins with an act of your willingness and your commitment to be a luckier person every day.” (11:17) “What I think we’ve got to do is make your life an opening for magical things to happen. Because why not? What have you got to lose? Open yourself up to more magic and miracles and the appearance of spontaneous good things in your life.” (14:39) “Luck is like a wind that’s blowing all the time. Conscious luck is finding your way of being with that so things come to you effortlessly.” (41:45)

28 Feb 2025 | Dating Then vs. Now: A Mother-Daughter Tell-All | 00:41:33
Ever looked at today’s dating scene and thought, “Wow, things have really changed?” Dating apps, social media, and modern expectations make it a whole new world compared to back in the day. And since we’re still in February—fresh off Valentine’s Day—love, dating, and intimacy are definitely hot topics. So, I sat down with my daughter, Amira, and thought, this would be the perfect time to swap stories, talk red flags, and figure out what really makes someone a great partner. Confidence, kindness, and a few unexpected surprises—this conversation is full of eye-opening (and hilarious) moments. Amira even spills on a first date that took an unexpected turn—let’s just say, it was memorable. We’re also getting into how dating apps have changed the game, why emotional connection matters more than ever, and how family influences the way we navigate relationships. And because we love a little fun, we threw in a rapid-fire Q&A with some juicy dating questions! Whether you’re single, taken, or just here for the laughs, you won’t want to miss this one. Oh, and if your energy (or hormones) could use a little love, I have to tell you about Mighty Maca Plus. I created it because so many women—myself included—needed something natural to feel good again. It’s packed with over 30 superfoods that help with energy, mood, and even those annoying hot flashes. Try it at dranna.com/drinkmaca and see how amazing you can feel!

Key Takeaways:
Quotes: “One of the biggest reasons people don’t go for their passion and purpose, don’t create a life that’s as extraordinary as it could be, is because we’re afraid.” [9:11] “We have to feel our feelings and our grief over the things that we may have lost either temporarily or in the longer term. And what you focus on grows. It’s honoring what is, but at the same time, I firmly believe that there is nothing like times of pure chaos to create something different.” [19:10] “Perimenopausal women are at a tremendous time when our changing hormones will really call us to go within and to shed whatever’s not working, adopt whatever will help us thrive so that we can feel sexy, vibrant, healthy, and successful into our 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond.” [28:38]

18 Apr 2025 | Decoding Physical and Mental Knots | 00:50:15
There’s this deep connection between how we feel, what we think, and what our bodies go through—especially during big transitions like menopause. I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Yasmine Saad, an award-winning NYC Psychologist and TEDx Speaker, who’s doing some seriously powerful work helping people understand their emotions in a whole new way. She talked about how our feelings—like sadness, anger, even loneliness—don’t just pass through quietly; they show up in our bodies. And when we start to really listen to those messages, that’s when the real healing begins. Dr. Yasmine shared her own personal journey and how she blends traditional Chinese medicine with modern psychology in the most grounded, eye-opening way. We got into what loneliness actually means (hint: it’s not about being alone) and how connecting with your purpose can change everything. We also touched on menopause—not just the symptoms, but how it can be a time to reconnect with yourself and feel more powerful than ever. If you’ve been carrying emotions in your body and not quite sure how to unpack them, you’re going to love this one. Tune in and I think you'll come away with some beautiful aha moments—and maybe a few deep sighs of relief. We even talked about how to stay centered and hopeful when the world feels heavy, which feels especially important right now. And if menopause has you feeling off or just plain over it, don’t miss my Magic Menopause program—it’s a space to get grounded, feel better in your body, and actually understand what your hormones are trying to tell you. You can check it out at dranna.com—I’d love to have you there.

How to keep from "Frog Farming" as she calls it when we are in relationship, 3. How to empower our mate, 4. Understanding key differences between the masculine and feminine in relationship 5. Discussion on Stress in relationships and the peri-menopause and peri-andropause Alison Armstrong is a sought-after speaker in the areas of gender differences, well-being, empowerment, sexuality and relationships. She is the author of The Queen's Code and creator the widely acclaimed "Queen’s Code" workshop series, plus a host of other products and programs designed to foster understanding and further partnership between men and women. In Alison’s own words, "I'm passionate about Partnership. I want to know everything about this paradigm – this magic that can happen between people. What makes a partnership possible, what makes one brilliant, what destroys a partnership, what expands the power of partnership. Everything I study and distinguish is to give greater access to the phenomenon of partnership. "This is why I've spent so much time on male/female and masculine/feminine dynamics. The misunderstandings and misinterpretations between testosterone-based and estrogen-based creatures (usually known as men and women, but not always) devastate lives, destroy families, and put our dreams of love and fulfillment out of reach. And that's just in the personal, romantic domain. Apply these misconceptions to education, work and community, and the real consequences of fundamentally not understanding each other are exponentially worse." 18 Aug 2019 | How To Process & Heal From Grief | 00:21:14
Grief affects all of us in so many different ways and can come over you at any point, even when you’re not expecting it. For many, grief stems from the loss of a loved one, but that’s not always the root cause. Grief comes from loss -- the loss of a job, business, pet, friendship, relationship, death, and so many other aspects of your life. My guest and friend, Lindsay McKinnon, is talking about her relationship with grief after losing her two sons in a house fire. The grieving process will look totally different for each individual going through it, but one thing remains static: it will be a long, hard haul. Our culture isn’t taught how to grieve properly, and so many of us feel guilty for trying to live a happy life again. Lindsay has found happiness after loss by turning to, and now teaching, Qoya, a type of dancing yoga. Grief sits in our hips, and the movement and flow of dancing is not only emotionally enjoyable, helps release the sadness. She writes about how our soul meets the body and talks about creating space for that connection. Lindsay also holds retreats to help people work through their grief. In this episode, we talk about how grief can come into your life, even when you think you’ve healed from it. We look at the healing process and how this is a journey that is individual to the person. You need to honor the time it takes for you and your body to heal. Grieving the loss of love is natural, but it’s important to remember that the sadness we feel is a reflection of the joy we felt. How do you handle your feelings of grief? What do you do to remember those you have lost? Do you incorporate movement into your grieving process? In This Episode:
Quotes: “Our culture is just not really taught how to grieve. We find ourselves in the midst of it and quite often judging how we’re navigating it. Feeling like we should be doing something other than what we are doing or feeling something other than what we are actually feeling.” (2:10) “What I learned is that the heart can expand. It can include our deepest pain points and our greatest joys at the same time.” (5:57) “Being present in your body, being physical, incorporating that. Realizing physically what you’re feeling emotionally and where that needs to be worked out physically because our different organs hold energy.” (14:24)

08 Sep 2019 | Why Love Is Medicine For The Heart & Mind | 00:26:01
How we feel towards our bodies and our loved ones can actually impact the health we have inside. Love is medicine; feeling love increases our oxytocin and helps keep cortisol in check, so our stress levels don’t contribute to the heart or other diseases. Razi Berry is a naturopathic doctor who focuses on the way love impacts our health. When Razi was a teenager, she had a severe eating disorder that was causing her heart to stop working. She knows the exact moment when she started to heal: her mother and brother were surrounding her hospital bed and telling her how much they loved her. It was that love, and love she felt for them, that told her body it was time to heal. Razi found herself asking the question “where does healing come from?” often after she was healed. And now she believes that as a society, our lack of love and empathy for one another and ourselves are contributing to chronic and incurable diseases. As a society, we have a disconnection from nature and Razi encourages everyone to spend more time outside. Also, we should strive to become more self-aware and connected with nature, so our bodies will start to reattune and heal from the inside out. Razi shares a couple of techniques that help you reconnect with your body and feel the love. She explains how a body scan works and why you should do them regularly. Plus, she gives some examples of how power poses and various playful practices can heal the body and soul. How is your relationship with yourself and your loved ones? Have you ever practiced using body scans? When’s the last time you spent time in nature? In This Episode:
“The naturopathic philosophy is one that says ‘the doctor doesn’t heal you, healing comes from within.’” (7:55) “It’s not just about love and relationships, but it’s about how these resources of love, in yourself and your relationship with nature, your environment, and each other are really the medicine that we need to get back to healing.” (10:02) “If we don’t know how to love ourselves, how to listen to ourselves, then that’s how we stay stuck in these patterns that take us away from our health.” (13:54) Links Find Out More About The Love is Medicine Project Find Razi Berry on Facebook | Instagram | Pinterest

Memorable Quotes "People make assumptions, oh, it's common to be obese and overweight by x age. It's common to have aches and pains. It's common to have poor sleep and how so many of us have been conditioned to accept these things, and I'll be the first person to say that does not have to be our destiny. So, a lot of the work that I do is helping people understand the net impact of these lifestyle choices and how we can make better choices.” [00:05:52] - Cynthia Thurlow "I think for many people they get fixated just on the exterior and not enough internal work, and that's the most important work, is what we do in terms of, you know, supporting ourselves spiritually, mentally, physiologically." And yet, like cancer, this is a topic that few people talk about." [00:04:39] – Kris Carr

30 Jun 2020 | The Neuroscience of Health, Hormones, and Happiness | 01:03:45
Emerging research shows that our early years have a lasting impact on not only our mental and physical health, but our health, wellbeing, and lifespan. I’m joined by Dr. Sarah McKay, a neuroscientist based in Australia, to discuss the intersection of nature, nurture, and a woman’s brain. About Dr. Sarah McKay Dr. Sarah McKay sums up her research with the words, ‘Nature, Nurture and Neuroplasticity’. Sarah is a neuroscientist and science communicator who specializes in translating brain science research into simple, actionable strategies for peak performance, creativity, health, and wellbeing. As the director of The Neuroscience Academy, Sarah offers training in applied neuroscience and brain health for ‘helping professionals’. Sarah has authored the popular science book, The Women's Brain Book - The Neuroscience of Health, Hormones, and Happiness, which explores women’s health from 'womb to tomb' through the lens of neurobiology. In 2019, she hosted an episode of ABC’s flagship science TV show Catalyst exploring biohacking, brain health, and longevity. In 2020, Sarah will take part in Homeward Bound, a women-in-STEMM leadership expedition to Antarctica. Sarah grew up in Christchurch, New Zealand, and after completing her neuroscience degree at Otago University, won a scholarship to Oxford University for her Ph.D. training. After 5 years of medical research in Sydney, Australia, Sarah hung up her lab coat to build a science communications business. Sarah combines a wry sense of humor with an uncompromising mind, and whether she's writing or speaking on the TEDx stage she tells science stories in a fun and compelling way. She features in print media such as The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, and Sydney Morning Herald. Sarah is also on SBS Insight, ABC Radio National, ABC Catalyst, and Channel 7 Mornings. Sarah lives on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia with her Irish husband. Together they're raising two boys and a cocker spaniel, and they spend time sailing, surfing, mountain biking, or skiing. First of all, Sarah explains what neuroplasticity is. It’s a relatively new avenue of neuroscience that Sarah’s dedicated her studies to. She shares how her studies brought her to start her own science business. While there is increasing evidence that the first few years of our lives impact our health and wellbeing, Sarah provides evidence of how the love and care of someone outside your immediate family can help turn your life around. This gives a strong argument to the nurture side of the debate - and how important activating with love and kindness to others has such a lasting impact. From a family first point of view, we talk about how new mothers and new families need to have support systems put in place immediately. As opposed to returning to work just weeks after giving birth, an emphasis on connecting and building love within the family unit will help solidify that new baby’s positive mental health later in life. We discuss the links between puberty and perimenopause and how girls and women should have support during these times in their lives. Our brains and bodies are undergoing some intense transformation that should run as naturally as possible. Sarah explains what actually causes the hot flashes that women experience during perimenopause. While there could be an argument for taking artificial hormones to suppress these and other effects that come with perimenopause, I believe it’s important we don’t suppress our hormones during these incredibly changing times. How can you show love and support to those around you at all times? How do you manage your perimenopause symptoms? As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com.
In This Episode:
Quotes: “Now we have very clear evidence that, yes, what happens in those first few years of life are a strong determinant, not the only determinant, but they are a large determinant to your mental and physical health, and loosely, health, wellbeing, and lifespan.” (19:56) “A lot of the culture with managing emotions that we see in young people is just a bit of a mental mishmash between the emotional part of the brain developing faster than the top-down control part of the brain.” (36:05) “There’s more that we don’t know than what we do know. Really it’s about being educated and informed and working with a healthcare provider that will help you make the right decisions for you.” (53:23)

08 Nov 2018 | Replenishing Our Spirit and Mind | 00:10:52
Have you ever struggled with your emotions on your birthday? Missed someone you loved? Felt a need for peace and quiet? I know I have! Well, that is exactly what I am going to talk about here. Well…. I taped this for you after my birthday last week...an emotional time for many reasons... and it made me realize the importance of resting our spirit and mind, and not just our body! LISTEN TO THE PODCAST!So That Is My Message For You Today....It's my birthday and I’ll cry if I want to! I am 51 today but I am not out celebrating. In fact, I am in quite a different situation. I am tucked away at a hermitage which is a quiet retreat space .. in Washington D.C. at the Franciscan Monastery of the HolyLand. And I am grieving the loss of both of my parents at this time of my life. Missing My Father Who Recently PassedI came to D.C. for my father’s interment at Arlington National Cemetery, which we had on July 26th. My father William V. Cabeca, Jr., passed away April 9th, but due to a long waiting list, some 3 months, this was the earliest day for interment that we could get. I honor all the families, and all the military men and women and their spouses, that have sacrificed so much for our country. I am truly proud to be among them. My mom was buried there nearly 20 years ago, and now my father. And so we celebrated the life of a good man. The Healing Power Of Spiritual RestAfter the interment I retreated to the monastery for some time to reflect. I spent some time looking back, on the loss of my parents...and my earlier loss of my young son. And also some time looking forward, as one daughter leaves home for college and I look to my current list of priorities before me. Is it the right list? We all need to take some time and ask that of ourselves. The quiet of the monastery, tucked away in the woods, allowed me to completely disconnect from media, world events and office happenings. And I focused on all the positives and gratitude that I have in my life.

01 Sep 2020 | Healing Your Gut Issues With Enzymes | 00:57:51
If your body isn’t producing enough of the right digestive enzymes, you might need a little bit of help. Supplementing the enzymes you lack will help improve your digestion and overall health. I’m joined by Steven Wright, co-founder of The Healthy Gut Company, to talk about how he healed his gut issues by experimenting with enzymes. About Steven Wright Steve is an engineer who developed the Specific Carbohydrate Diet to help combat the incredible digestion issues he had since he was 13 years old. Then, he ordered his first supplements and started his first diet, but by 23 he was crying daily in bloating pain. The panic attacks, depression, and constipation were threatening his “successful” life as a consultant. After years of struggle, Steve discovered the secret to gut health and started the SCD diet with his co-founder, Jordan. They’ve now released their own strain of enzymes and give detailed plans of the SCD diet so that other people can feel the benefits of good gut health, too. In this episode, Steve explains what the ancient power of enzymes is. We’re all born with a certain amount of enzymes in our bodies, but years of antibiotic use and poor food choices can lead to the enzymes not necessarily working as they should. Plus, as we age, the level of enzymes we’re born with inevitably declines, which leads to further problems with our digestive health. Steve tells us what the signs of an enzyme deficiency are. From low energy and fatigue to food sensitivities and allergies, there are a number of symptoms that could be signs of this deficiency. Steve recommends that everyone should take a digestive enzyme supplement to combat these kinds of problems. Our bodies have different types of enzymes that work to break down food. Enzymes start working as soon as food enters our mouths and they don’t stop until it leaves our systems. It’s because of all these different enzymes that should be present in our bodies from birth that Steve recommends taking a blended supplement. He lists some of his favorites before providing you his own enzyme blend, HoloZyme. Finally, both Steve and I wholeheartedly recommend that you stop taking PPI medication. Proton-pump inhibitors are often prescribed by doctors to help reduce symptoms of too much acid in the stomach and you should take them for a maximum of 8 weeks! How long have YOU been on PPIs? Do you think you might have a larger issue with digestive enzymes? As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com.
In This Episode:
Quotes: “You can eat the best Keto-Green, the best organic, you literally could be spending thousands of dollars on your food and your supplements and if you can’t break them down into the molecule sizes that your gut needs to absorb them, you will, unfortunately, be putting them in the toilet.” (14:14) “If you’re following Keto-Green, you’re getting a lot of minerals and you’re getting a lot of charges. That’s probably going to make your enzymes work better. But, if you don’t have an enzyme product that has an activation mineral blend in it, you’re essentially going to have to steal nutrients from either your food or your body to make the enzymes work.” (31:05)

10 Feb 2019 | How To Effectively Prevent Hair Loss In Women | 00:28:36
A staggering 80% of women across the world will have noticeable hair loss by the time they’re 60 years old. Hair loss can affect our appearance and confidence, but perhaps more importantly, it can indicate some underlying health issues or nutrient deficiencies. Today’s guest, Dr. Shel, is an expert in women’s hair loss and dedicates her life to supporting women through their hormonal changes. Dr. Shel is no stranger to hair loss. When she had her second child in her 30s, she noticed some postpartum hair loss. It was important for her to find the cause of it -- and it was her research that led her to help other women. Dr. Shel works with women all over the world to help them have their best health, both inside and outside. She recommends a consistent vitamin routine to promote hair regrowth and support hormonal balance. She also has courses and e-books designed to help you gain control over your own health. Today, we dive deep into women’s hair loss, which affects over 56 million women in the United States alone. Different phases of hair loss require different treatments, but overarching this is a positive approach to your health and nutrition. We also talk about what technologies and surgeries are available when you’re just not sure what else to do. Are you starting to lose your hair? Do you know what nutrients you need to keep your hair healthy, shiny, and vibrant? How often do you wash your hair? In This Episode:
Quotes: “80% of all women will have noticeable hair loss by the time they’re 60.” (1:36) “Low-level laser therapy has been around for decades for hair regrowth.” (14:47) “When you combine the laser with the nutrients with balancing the hormones, the results are just incredible.” (18:12) “Let’s try the natural route first. Let’s try to eliminate what may be causing the hair loss first instead of just putting a Band-Aid on it.” (24:54) Links Follow Dr. Shel on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter Buy Dr. Shel’s recommended hair, skin, & nails products on the Website Pick up the I-Grow Laser for yourself Dr. Shel Wellness & Aesthetic Center 1437 Highway 6 – Suite 100 Sugar Land, Texas 77478 Check out the full show notes including behind the scenes footage here! 14 Jul 2019 | Why We All Need To Be Talking About Hypothyroidism | 00:55:42
If you’ve been struggling with your weight, feeling sluggish, and getting no luck with a doctor’s diagnosis, you could still have thyroid disease. Unfortunately, most doctors don’t have all the answers when it comes to correctly diagnosing hypothyroidism. Today’s guest, Elle Russ, has taken her thyroid health into her own hands and now helps other women do the same. Elle has developed and written The Paleo-Thyroid Solution after years of undiagnosed thyroid issues. She has been through it all with the medical system, including being patronized by doctors who are uneducated about thyroid disease. She is a regular on The Primal Blueprint podcast where she discusses thyroid health and the paleo diet. An extraordinary amount of people have to figure out their thyroid problems on their own. Becoming your own thyroid advocate might be the only solution to your health problems. Therefore having a solid knowledge of what tests you should and shouldn’t take is essential. Thyroid issues can be caused by a number of different lifestyle influences, some of which you may never have even considered. American diets are designed in a way that makes your body sugar-burning, which usually has a detrimental impact on your health. Optimizing your body to be fat-adapted, which takes at least a month, can already solve a number of health and thyroid issues. Undiagnosed thyroid disease can have an impact on your mental health, and not just hormonal and chemical reasons. But there are other people out there who have solved their own hormone issues. Finding online communities and reading books, like The Paleo-Thyroid Solution and The Hormone Fix, can help exponentially. How long can you go without food? Have you repeatedly been to the doctor without receiving any kind of diagnosis? Do you feel like you can’t go more than four hours without food? In This Episode:
Quotes: “I didn’t realize I was basically eating and exercising my way into a Type 2 insulin-resistant situation.” (13:51) “People sometimes get all of the tests they should, except the Reverse T3, and it’s just not comprehensive enough.” (25:06) “Perseverance pays, no matter what. I wouldn’t be here right now if I was unwilling to accept this state of being.” (31:15) “This is a feeling of not being able to live in your own skin. Every minute of the day sucks. And all you can do is wait to go to bed so you don’t have to exist.” (32:28) Links Get your free Thyroid Health Guide Follow Elle Russ on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter Pick up your copy of The Paleo-Thyroid Solution Join the KetoGreen Community on Facebook

08 Nov 2018 | Methylation and Your Health: What You Need to Know | 00:45:13
Today I have a very exciting guest on Couch Talk, Dr. Kara Fitzgerald. I’ll tell you more about Dr. Kara in a moment, but want you to know that she is absolutely brilliant…and she will be talking with us today about methylation. By now, I’m sure you’ve heard conversations – and a good deal of buzz – around the topic of methylation… and even more likely, you are probably a bit confused about what it really is and why it matters to you! It is such an important topic…as many significant health conditions, including: autoimmune diseases, metabolic syndrome, dementia, accelerated aging, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases have been associated in some degree to the issue of methylation imbalance. So, we’re going to dive in deep today and talk about what YOU need to know. Meet Dr. Kara FitzgeraldFirst, let me introduce you to Dr. Kara and tell you a little bit about her. She received her Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon. She completed the first Council of Naturopathic Medicine accredited postdoctoral position in Nutritional Biochemistry and Laboratory Science at Metametrix Clinical Laboratory (now Genova Diagnostics) under the direction of the brilliant and kind Dr. Richard Lord, who I’ve known well for some time. Just brilliant! These two, just brilliant, let me tell you. Dr. Kara’s residency was completed at Progressive Medical Center in Atlanta, Georgia. And now she is up in Connecticut where she has a clinical practice also involved in the research. She’s the lead author and editor of Case Studies in Integrative and Functional Medicine. She’s a contributing author to Laboratory Evaluations for Integrative and Functional Medicine, The Institute for Functional Medicine’s Textbook for Functional Medicine. She recently co-authored the ebook called The Methylation Diet and Lifestyle and has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in multiple journals. She is also on faculty at The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM). As a final note…she does an awesome podcast as well. One of my favorite all-time podcasts that I have done was on Dr. Kara’s podcast. So, What Is Methylation And Why Is It Important?Methylation is often a tough topic for people to understand, so remember that as you listen to our interview…even if there are a few minutes here or there that go “too deep”, hang in there…you’ll still be able to get a lot of true gems out of the rest of our conversation…including dietary and lifestyle suggestions that will help support your methylation balance today. At a high level, just so you have some background, methylation is a biochemical process that happens in every cell in your body. Our bodies use methylation to support,
This last point is so important! Healthy methylation turns on the genes we want turned on for greater health and turns off the ones that we don’t really want to get turned on (like the ones for cancer and dementia). Think about how important this is…as it means that even if you have a gene that predisposes you to a disease like Alzheimer’s disease, healthy methylation can keep that gene turned off. So you can see that methylation supports many vital functions! We talk more about exactly how methylation works in the interview. If we aren’t a good methylator our body won’t create enough of the important molecules that it needs (molecules like glutathione, melatonin, serotonin, taurine, nitric oxide, etc.) to support these functions. Impaired methylation can also lead to anxiety and depression, increased risk of cancer, hormone imbalance, poor detox capacity, infertility, birth defects, and fatigue. So are you a good methylator or a bad methylator? (And how do you know! And what can you do about it?) Listen To The Interview Now!LISTEN TO THE INTERVIEW NOW, AND YOU WILL LEARN,
A Special Gift For You!As a special gift to my community, Dr. Kara is offering her ebook, “Methylation Diet and Lifestyle” at a discounted price. Just use the code, Anna10, to receive a 10% discount. It’s an incredibly informative ebook and you’ll find a lot of the same messages you are always hearing from me (as I talk about Keto-Alkaline® principles) relating to the importance of lifestyle decisions in creating optimal health! Feel free to ask Dr. Kara some questions below…we will follow-up with her to get her responses. Love this important area of medicine. Thanks Dr. Kara!

21 Jun 2022 | Food Systems on Fire - Medical Concerns from Endocrine Disruptors In The Food Chain | 00:42:43
On this week’s episode of the Girlfriend Doctor Show, we’re doing things a little differently. I attended the Women in Tech Global Summit 2022 in Paris, France. Under the High Patronage of Ms. Elizabeth Moreno, French Minister for Gender Equality, Diversity, and Equal Opportunities, the theme is ‘HERoes Shaping Tomorrow’, which celebrates women across the world who are the Shakers, Makers, and Innovators of our new society and economy. The panel of speakers I was a part of consisted of high-caliber people and the talk revolved mainly around food supply and how the quality of our food has been gradually declining. Terri Cochran, a past guest here on the Girlfriend Doctor, emphasized how not only is the food quality decreasing, but the way in which we manage and waste it is slowly leading our manmade emissions here in our home, earth. Overall, the discussion was very fun but also essential because we need to become more aware of our actions. 70% of food is actually wasted in the home, and though it may only seem like a waste of money, wasting food is also a huge contributor to climate change. We need to come together and find solutions to the problems humanity is facing, and it starts with discussions like these. Tune in to find out how we can overcome these global issues! KEY TAKEAWAYS [10:30] Food storage and waste contributes to 35% of total manmade emissions [13:24] Diabetes and obesity in the country is growing exponentially [18:32] How Food Cloud is feeding the world [22:04] We waste a lot of food and water [22:54] Dr. Anna’s take on ‘Food is Everything’ [32:55] Becoming more conscious of food waste in the home SPEAKERS Teri Cochrane - CEO and Longevity Expert - Beyond Nutrition John D. Then here’s the question, what is the sacred opportunity sitting right in front of me?” [27:11] -Sheri Salata “There is a new story to be told, and when you tell that story, Dr.Anna, as I know you know, there is a new life that comes with it, the life of your dreams.” [35:45] -Sheri Salata

21 Apr 2020 | Improving Your Immune System Starting Now | 00:18:22
The single most important thing you can do to protect your health right now during this international health crisis is to wash your hands. The next is to boost your immunity. In this episode of The Girlfriend Doctor, I’m talking about how you can improve your immune system starting today by following my tips. About Boosting Your ImmunityDo you realize how important it is to wash your hands regularly, especially during an outbreak such as COVID-19? I’m going to tell you a story of an Austrian doctor who faced ridicule over the concept a few centuries ago. Once doctors finally agreed with him, there was a significant decrease in medical and labor deaths. I cannot stress enough how vital it is for you to be washing your hands right now. Stop spreading this disease. Help keep our healthcare system under control. We have a responsibility to boost our own immune system. It’s not just the foods we put in our bodies, it’s also the chemicals we use around us and the air we breathe. Take some time to examine the ingredients in the products you use on a regular basis. I explain how we can start removing harmful substances from our system. By replacing the chemical cleaning products we use regularly with more natural ones, we can start making a huge difference. Also, by cleaning our fruits and vegetables well, we’ll start reducing how much pesticides we ingest. Finally, I’m talking about how you can start improving your immune system by making simple changes to your diet and lifestyle. And you can start today! Sharing your love, increasing your Oxytocin, and taking some of my Mighty Maca supplements are great ways to start. I also invite you to pre-order Keto-Green 16. We’ll be following my plan live and it’s a wonderful way to improve your immune system. I challenge you to watch the sunrise and sunset every single day for the next 7 days to reset your circadian rhythm! How can you be more loving today? Ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com In This Episode:
