Send us a text

Have you ever felt your voice drowned out by the environment you were meant to thrive in? Join Dr. Teralyn and Jen, two therapists daring to challenge the status quo, as they recount the twists and turns of their careers in mental health. Woven through our personal narratives, this episode reveals the subtle yet pervasive ways in which professionals can become gaslit in their workplaces and the wisdom we've unearthed from these experiences. Reflecting on the instinctual cues we ignored and the mentorships that molded us, we aim to spark a light of awareness and advocacy within you.

The journey through the mental health field is neither straight nor narrow, as Jen and I can attest. We share our trials of proposing innovative solutions met with resistance and recount the crossroads that led us to divergent paths within the same organization. Our discussion is vulnerable as we delve into the traumatic stints in supervisory roles and the critical moments that beckoned us to step away from suffocating work environments. This conversation isn't merely a recount; it's a testament to the transformation that's possible when you choose your identity and happiness over the comfort of conformity.

As we close this episode, we dissect the intricate web of inadequacy and the struggle to maintain critical thinking against the grain of suppressive systems. Our professional pivots—from traditional settings to the autonomy of private practice—uncover the ongoing challenges beneath the surface of being one's own boss. 27 Feb 2024Are Antidepressants Ruining Relationships?01:01:21

Send us a text

Weaving through the delicate intricacies of how antidepressants shape the emotional and intimate landscapes of our lives, Dr. Teralyn, along with therapist Jen, embark on a candid exploration that many shy away from. Ever felt that tug in your chest, the one that pulls at the threads of connection between you and your partner as you navigate the waters of mental health treatment? We've been there, and in this episode, we unveil the raw and often unseen effects of medications like sertraline and Lexapro on love, longing, and the longing to connect.

Emotions run deep as we peel back the layers of postpartum depression and the hushed struggles mothers face, particularly when antidepressants enter the picture. Delving into our own battles with intrusive thoughts and the scarcity of protective factors for new mothers, we aim to dismantle the stigma and spark discussions that could pave the way for better support and understanding. And it doesn't stop there; we probe the parallels of withdrawal, both from antidepressants and the bonds that sustain us, considering how these medications color our personal narratives and the fabric of our relationships.

As we wrap up this profound conversation, we contemplate the potential ripple effects of antidepressant use on societal trends, including the unsettling correlation with rising divorce rates. By sharing the multifaceted journeys of our hearts and minds, we seek to illuminate the need for resilience, the grace of apology, and the unending pursuit of balance in mental health treatment. Join us as we share more than just experiences; we share a call to re-evaluate the interplay between medication, mental wellness, and the enduring human quest for connection.

05 Mar 2024They Blinded Me With Science: Big Pharma Marketing Machine00:52:55

Send us a text

Unveil the hidden truths behind the glossy veneer of Big Pharma's marketing with Dr. Teralyn and therapist Jen, as we investigate the chasm between the feel-good narratives of medication commercials and the harsh realities of side effects and efficacy. Our exploration kicks off with an analysis of a recent Pfizer Super Bowl commercial, peeling away the layers of its inclusive message to question the true impact of these drugs on our health and society. We confront the unsettling evidence presented in a JAMA study, which suggests that the drugs we're bombarded with through high-budget ads might not be the ones that best serve our health needs.

Strap in for a candid discussion on the precarious practice of medication stacking in psychiatric care, as we contrast it with the precise nature of treatments like insulin for diabetes. Listeners will gain frontline insights into the therapist's role in navigating the complexities patients face with psychiatric medications, and we'll tackle the criticism of openly discussing such issues. Our conversation extends to 'Big Pharma Friday' events, exposing the tactics used to curry favor among healthcare professionals and the implications for patient care.

To close, we cast a critical eye on the financial might of the pharmaceutical industry, scrutinizing Pfizer's spending on advertising versus research and the potential conflicts arising from their lobbying efforts. We invite you to consider the integrity of the medical advice we receive and ponder the influence of Big Pharma's deep pockets on the treatment options presented to us. Join us for a session that promises not just to inform but also to challenge your perspective on the pervasive power of pharmaceutical marketing in our healthcare system.

12 Mar 2024Pregnant and Prescribed: When Motherhood and Psychiatry Collide00:52:00

Send us a text

As I, Dr. Teralyn sat with my dear friend and therapist, Jen, our conversation took a turn toward the deeply personal. We wound through the complex path of antidepressant use during pregnancy, weighing the delicate scales of maternal mental health against fetal development. This heart-to-heart isn't just about sharing our stories—it's about illuminating the often hushed dialogues surrounding medication, mental well-being, and the intricate dance of decision-making that expectant mothers face.

Navigating pregnancy while managing mental health can feel like walking a tightrope, and this episode doesn’t shy away from that reality. We peel back the layers on the impact of healthcare professionals' guidance, and the profound weight their words carry in the informed consent process. You'll hear firsthand how the ripples of our experiences extend to the little ones we bring into the world as I recount my son's early developmental hurdles—a tale that underscores the need for clear, comprehensive communication and the empowerment of patients to ask challenging questions.

In the tender realm of motherhood, the implications of medication use ripple into the postpartum period, touching on breastfeeding and child development. Alongside Jen, we tackle the emotional and practical challenges faced by mothers striving to nourish their newborns, the need for awareness among healthcare providers, and the importance of informed discussions on the effects of psychiatric medications. This conversation is an advocacy for knowledge, a call for compassionate healthcare dialogue, and a journey toward empowerment in the most vulnerable chapters of parenthood.

19 Mar 2024Deprescribe Me: Breaking Free from the Grasp of Antidepressants00:59:44

Send us a text

Embarking on a journey to taper off SSRIs can feel like navigating through a dense fog—challenging and fraught with the unknown. My co-host, therapist Jen, and I, Dr. Teralyn, pull from our own stories of medication withdrawal to shed light on the resources that are crucial during this process. While a good laugh about our telehealth wardrobe mishaps lightens the mood, our conversation takes a serious turn as we unravel the importance of professional medical advice, the power of a supportive community, and the necessity of understanding what lies ahead when reducing or stopping medication.

Neurotransmitters, those tiny messengers within our brains, hold immense power over our well-being, particularly serotonin and dopamine. They're also central characters in our in-depth chat about the delicate dance of tapering off medications. We dig into the science behind addiction and mental health therapies, sharing personal insights to highlight the role of diet, lifestyle, and amino acids in achieving a balanced state of mind. It's an eye-opener—reminding us that a pill isn't always the panacea, and the road to recovery often requires a more holistic approach.

If you've ever felt alone in the struggle of antidepressant withdrawal, let this episode serve as your companion and guide. We tackle the nitty-gritty of "discontinuation syndrome," the impact of medications on neurotransmitters throughout the body, and the empowering act of sharing patient stories. As we discuss the insights from "Prozac Backlash" and other resources, we cement the significance of being an informed and empowered patient. Your story matters, and we invite you to join us in creating a dialogue around mental health and medication complexities, fostering a community that understands and supports one another through every step.

26 Mar 2024Treatment Resistant & Other Stupid Labels: When Psychiatric Medication Fails You01:02:21

Send us a text

Ever felt like a square peg being forced into a round hole of mental health treatments? Our latest episode peels back the curtain on the stigmatizing label of "treatment-resistant" in mental health care, revealing the systemic flaws that place undue blame on patients for the shortcomings of treatments. We join forces with experts to dismantle the disheartening narrative that often accompanies this term, shining a light on its pervasive use across various conditions, and the concerning rise of medication dependence, particularly in vulnerable populations like children and women. We're not just critiquing; we're calling for a paradigm shift that focuses on the adequacy of care rather than patient labeling.

Navigating the stormy seas of treatment-resistant depression can be a desolate journey, but we're not charting these waters alone. We share raw, firsthand experiences with antidepressants like Effexor, exposing the often-dismissive responses patients encounter, along with the distressing side effects. With our listeners as our co-navigators, we dissect the insidious ways medical marketing shifts blame onto those seeking help and scrutinize the medical literature for how it presents non-medication treatments. It's not just a discussion—it's a revelation of the hidden forces at play in the treatments offered to people grappling with persistent depression.

Wrapping up our voyage, we dare to confront the controversial Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and its role in the narrative of treatment-resistant depression. We don't shy away from examining the weighty implications of such labels and treatments, placing a spotlight on the psychiatrists' role, potential financial motivations, and the underexplored non-medical approaches that often get overshadowed by invasive procedures. As we delve into the power dynamics within psychiatry, we advocate for a practice rooted in ethical standards and patient autonomy. Join u

Send us a text

Discover the disturbing truths and hidden controversies of the mental health field as Dr. Teralyn and therapist Jen join us for an unflinching examination of the discipline's murky past. This episode peels back the curtain on the profession's earliest days, revealing how the shadows of eugenics and the asylum system continue to loom large over modern practices. As we dissect the legacy of figures like Freud and spotlight the stark omissions in our educational curriculum, we promise a journey that will not only inform but also provoke a critical re-evaluation of the mental health narrative.

The annals of psychiatric care are marred by interventions that now seem barbaric, and our conversation takes a hard look at the life-threatening surgeries performed by Dr. Cotton, whose work was once praised. These grim tales serve as stark reminders of the necessity for ethical practices in mental health care. With Dr. Terri Lynn and therapist Jen as our guides, we reflect on the enduring implications of historical treatments and emphasize the need for empathy and patient-centered approaches in the wake of ego-driven agendas that have tainted our field's history.

Wrapping up our episode, we probe the complexities of current psychiatric research and practice, challenging the integrity of studies that influence our understanding of treatments such as ECT and antidepressants. With a critical eye, we discuss the importance of transparency in psychiatric research and the honoring of patient experiences. By the end of this thought-provoking dialogue, listeners are urged to consider the implications of past practices on the present and to recognize the vital role of ethical standards in shaping the future of mental health care.

16 Apr 2024Truth Exposed: Maybe You're Born With It, Maybe It's Inflammation01:00:21

Send us a text

When our bodies whisper tales of discomfort, it's our minds that often scream out in response. This isn't just poetic musing but the thrust of our latest Gaslit Truth Podcast episode, where the often-ignored nexus of inflammation and mental health takes center stage. With the insightful guest therapist Jen by our side, we tackle the Western medical model's shortcomings, offering a fresh lens to view conditions like depression as not just psychological battles but also physical ones. We wrangle with the idea that your mood might be more deeply entwined with inflammation than you've ever considered, and that the usual prescription pad approach might need a rethink.

Witnessing a seizure recently threw me back into the past, dredging up memories that I thought were long buried. It was a powerful, unwelcome reminder of how our past shadows our present, physically and mentally. In this conversation, we weave personal narratives with discussions on 'toxic positivity', the intricate dance between our thoughts and our body's inflammatory responses, and therapeutic avenues like EMDR that can help intercept this cycle. We break down the barriers between mind and body, investigating how our internal dialogue can send ripples throughout our physiology, potentially derailing our mental health journey.

We wrap up this deep dive with a look at the often-overlooked pillars of mental health: digestive health, detoxification, and diet. It's not just about the food on our plates but the words that feed our minds. As we piece together the puzzle of mood disorders, we highlight the two-way street between the gut and the brain, encouraging a dialogue that extends beyond our episode. We invite you to join us on this exploration of the self, sharing your stories and adding to the tapestry of experiences that shape the Gaslit Truth Podcast community.

What’s not shared with patients is that the NEW YOU cannot be established for months or even years as the brain and body go through withdrawal. The sad solution - ADD more medication.

🚨 TRIGGER WARNING: This episode discusses research and personal experience around how we are GASLIT by providers to believe that medication stacking is going to fix mental health struggles. 14 May 2024DSMV Burn Baby Burn, When Therapists Question The Diagnostic Rulebook01:01:24

Send us a text

🎙️🆕 DSM-V BURN BABY BURN, WHEN THERAPISTS QUESTION THE RULE BOOK DROPS TODAY!

Do you feel lost in a maze of conflicting diagnoses? It’s as if each time you see a provider, you are given another label and you wonder “How is this possible? I am still the same person - right?” 🌀 Struggling under the weight of labels that don't quite match your experience is the reality for many leading patients to more confusion than clarity.
Have you ever found yourself questioning the rulebook? That's exactly what Dr. Teralyn and Therapist Jenn did in our latest conversation where we lit a literal match to the DSM-5. It wasn't just a rebellious act; it was the beginning of a deep dive into how mental health diagnoses need a serious overhaul. We share stories from the trenches—both the humorous and the harrowing—about the realities of diagnosing without the necessary tools that should be provided in our training, and why that's sending the wrong message to the next generation of therapists.

The conversation took an earnest turn as we uncovered the often hidden world of on-the-job learning that therapists undergo. From our early days in correctional facilities to our transitions into private practice, we've seen firsthand how varying environments can reshape our understanding of mental health issues. But it's not just about where we work; it's also about the challenging predicacies within the field itself. We opened up about the struggles we face, from the daunting task of assessing inmates swiftly, to the dilemmas of overdiagnosis and the murky waters of diagnostic criteria expansion.

Wrapping things up, we didn't shy away from confronting the controversies that keep us up at night. Please welcome Brooke Siem to our show! Brooke Siem (@brookesiem) is both a chef to professional athletes and the surprising face of psychiatric drug withdrawal awareness and advocacy. Her book, MAY CAUSE SIDE EFFECTS won the 2023 BIBA Prize for memoir and was named as one of Good Morning America's most anticipated reads. Her work on antidepressant withdrawal has also appeared in The Washington Post, New York Post, Psychology Today, and more. Our conversation sails towards the humorous shores of Bob Ross, using his calming painting sessions to illustrate the nuanced art of balancing creative output with meaningful dialogue.

The heart of our discussion beats with the pulse of challenging established norms, as we contemplate the ethical dilemmas of prescribing medications, especially to children. We share stories of the emotional upheaval akin to a 'second puberty,' faced when stepping away from years of medication dependency. Our discourse leads us to examine the societal pressure to endure side effects for promised future gains, questioning the practice within the context of informed consent. Send us a text

How does social media shape our mental health and personal identities? This question underpins our latest episode, where Dr. Teralyn and therapist Jenn tackle the complexities of respectful engagement within our community. Kicking off with a thoughtful discussion about a YouTube comment that trivialized a guest's withdrawal experience, we underscore the importance of empathy and understanding in conversations about mental health. We delve into the diverse experiences of psych med withdrawal and reinforce our communal responsibility to support each other through challenging times.

As we navigate the labyrinth of social media's impact, we dissect how platforms like TikTok and YouTube influence behaviors and self-identity, particularly among teens and women. Drawing from articles in Mad in America and Science Direct, we explore the concept of "social contagion" and how mental health diagnoses can become trendy identities within online groups. We reflect on how these digital spaces can both foster and distort self-perception, sharing personal anecdotes about how private diaries of the past have given way to today's very public digital expressions.

Our conversation spans the romanticization of psychiatric disorders online and the pressures parents face in understanding their children's shifting identities. We discuss real-life cases, like a young girl’s self-diagnosis journey influenced by social media, and broader trends such as the glamorization of Dissociative Identity Disorder. By weaving in personal stories and expert insights, we advocate for a balanced approach that allows youth to explore their identities without premature pathologization, ensuring their online activities don't hinder their everyday lives. Listen in for a deep dive into modern self-expression in the digital age.

Can psychiatric medications be doing more harm than good? Esteemed psychiatrist Dr. Yosef Witt-Dering joins us to challenge the conventional wisdom surrounding psychiatric treatments. Transitioning from traditional psychiatry to a patient-centered approach, Dr. Witt-Dering critiques the over-reliance on medications influenced by pharmaceutical marketing and insurance incentives. He presents compelling arguments on why individualized care is crucial and questions the validity of psychiatric diagnoses that lack clear pathological evidence.

This episode also tackles the rising trend of self-diagnosed mental health conditions propelled by social media and societal pressures. We examine the romanticization and potential dangers of self-diagnosing disorders like bipolar, ADHD, and autism without medical oversight. Dr. Witt-Dering and I discuss the critical importance of thorough medical evaluations, especially for vulnerable groups like children and middle-aged women, and the devastating consequences of misdiagnosis and inadequate testing. We revisit historical anecdotes, such as the misleading allure of stimulants for weight loss, to underscore the risks of unregulated medication use.

Further, we delve into the contentious relationship between the FDA, pharmaceutical companies, and the public's perception of drug safety. Drawing eerie parallels to the tobacco industry, Dr. Witt-Dering exposes how pharmaceutical companies downplay the risks of antidepressants despite evident links to suicidal behavior. We explore the ethical dilemmas faced by medical professionals who challenge the status quo and the societal shifts in mental health stigmatization. Finally, we highlight the emotional and psychological hurdles faced by patients tapering off long-term medications, emphasizing the need for support, self-awareness, and celebrating milestones in their journey towards independence. 19 Nov 2024Spellbinding: How Psychiatric Medication Distorts Our Reality00:47:29

Send us a text

Can psychiatric medications cloud our judgment and distort reality? Join Dr. Teralyn and therapist Jen on the Gaslit Truth Podcast as we challenge the conventional understanding of psychiatric drugs and their impact on mental health. By questioning the true effects of these medications, we explore the concept of anosognosia—where individuals unknowingly disregard the harmful mental consequences while overvaluing perceived benefits. With a vivid metaphor of navigating a hazard-filled hallway, we illuminate the dangers hidden behind the façade of wellness offered by these drugs. Listen in for insights that could reshape your perspective on mental health treatment, whether you're contemplating, currently taking, or questioning psychiatric medications.

We venture into the realm of cognitive disruptions caused by psychiatric medications and everyday substances like caffeine and alcohol. Are these drugs really enhancing mental clarity, or are they impairing it? Dr. Tara Lynn and Jen scrutinize the idea of informed consent, debating whether people are genuinely aware of the potential cognitive detriments. Highlighting voices of those who already feel their brains are compromised, we invite listeners to ponder the paradox of accepting further impairments from medication. By drawing parallels between these treatments and common substances, we shed light on their shared effects on emotional response and self-awareness, urging a critical reassessment of their broader implications for mental health and wellbeing.

Finally, we confront the potential emotional numbing and cognitive side effects of psychiatric drugs, particularly SSRIs, SNRIs, and stimulants, in therapeutic settings like EMDR. With personal anecdotes and research, we discuss "spellbinding"—a phenomenon where users may overlook significant side effects while overestimating benefits. Our conversation raises essential questions about informed consent and the

With Dr. Terrellin and therapist Jen, we challenge the status quo and shed light on the complex relationship between alcohol use and antidepressant medication. Despite the warnings, many individuals continue to drink while on SSRIs, and we ask the tough questions about why this happens. Our conversation includes personal anecdotes and professional insights that underline the disconnect between medical advice and real-world behaviors. By questioning assumptions and advocating for transparency, we aim to empower individuals navigating this tricky landscape.

Throughout this episode, we explore how SSRIs might affect alcohol tolerance and the broader implications of prescribing these medications as a treatment for alcohol addiction. Dr. Terrellin shares a personal story about titrating off Lexapro and its surprising effect on alcohol tolerance, challenging the prevailing perceptions of how these substances interact. We also tackle the controversial topic of iatrogenic addiction and reevaluate what it means to be labeled with a substance use disorder. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion on the need for curiosity and a fresh perspective in understanding the interplay between psychiatric medications and substance use.

10 Dec 2024Nutrition is the Revolution of Therapy: Josh Friedman, Psychologist00:59:41

Send us a text

Discover the evolving landscape of mental health with us on the Gaslit Truth Podcast as we sit down with Dr. Josh Friedman, a pioneer in nutritional psychology. Dr. Josh's journey from traditional mental health treatment to embracing holistic and nutritional approaches offers profound insights into the biochemical and nutritional foundations of psychological well-being. He shares how his diverse background in psychoanalysis, yoga, and holistic health informs his unique approach, while also touching on the challenges he's faced, including an intriguing Facebook ban during the COVID-19 pandemic for discussing alternative health perspectives.

In this eye-opening episode, we address a critical issue: the relentless pursuit of credentials in the mental health field, and the often-overlooked importance of hands-on work with individuals. Our discussion highlights the skepticism and eventual acceptance of innovative therapies, like amino acid therapy, and notes a shift toward integrative medicine, as evidenced by the rising number of therapists embracing more holistic views. We also delve into the stagnation within psychiatry despite the introduction of new treatments, emphasizing the need for comprehensive medical evaluations and the effectiveness of simple, foundational health practices.

Finally, we share our inspiring experiences from a recent conference that connected us with influential figures like Christina Veselak and Hila Cass. These encounters reinforced the importance of following one's path and trusting in one's capabilities. We challenge the notion of "treatment resistance," suggesting that it often indicates a need for new tools. By sharing personal triumphs and the fulfillment of making a difference, we hope to inspire mental health professionals to embrace their unique approaches, fostering a supportive community for future practitioners.

Send us a text

After enduring a difficult period of anxiety and depression following a traumatic event at the age of 15, Susie Amendola found a powerful ally in yoga, which she shares in this episode of the Gaslit Truth Podcast. Susie's journey to healing began when her mother introduced her to yoga, during a time when mental health was rarely discussed, and holistic clinics offered a beacon of hope. For over three decades, Susie has been committed to teaching the authentic essence of yoga, and she joins us to discuss the transformative power of this ancient practice, contrasting its healing potential with the often commercialized versions found in the western world.

We also break down stereotypes and misconceptions about yoga, emphasizing its inclusivity and accessibility to individuals of all body types, shapes, and sizes. My own experience of becoming a certified yoga instructor during the pandemic shed light on trauma-informed yoga's focus on personal connection and self-awareness. By centering and embodying these practices, yoga emerges as a transformative tool for stress relief and healing, encouraging a culture where everyone can find a place, regardless of preconceived notions or physical abilities.

Our conversation further explores the principles of trauma-sensitive yoga and the importance of creating safe spaces for healing. Susie shares insights from her work with a lifestyle program for cardiac patients inspired by Dr. Dean Ornish, showcasing the profound impact of yoga, a vegan diet, and stress management on heart disease, depression, and diabetes. We delve into practical stress management techniques, the importance of internal self-care practices, and the value of mindfulness. By embracing these practices, we learn to foster a profound sense of well-being and presence, underscoring the power of yoga in personal healing and transformation.

28 Jan 2025Do Psych Meds Save Lives? The Answer Will Surprise You: New research with Dr. Teralyn and Therapist Jenn00:44:43

Send us a text

Is the esteemed combination of psychotherapy and psychiatric medication really the gold standard for mental health treatment, or have we been led astray by conventional wisdom? On today's episode of the Gaslit Truth Podcast, we challenge the mainstream belief and examine the influence of the pharmaceutical industry in shaping this narrative. As trained dialectical behavior therapists, we unravel the complexities surrounding therapeutic failures and question if it’s the medications rather than therapeutic interventions that often fall short. We take a critical look at educational materials, inviting listeners to share any textbooks that unwaveringly promote this combination.

The placebo effect might just be the unsung hero in the story of antidepressants' perceived success. Join us as we dissect studies that pit antidepressants against placebos, revealing the often-overlooked power of psychotherapy as a standalone treatment, especially in severe cases of depression. We argue for the empowerment of therapists to lean into their therapeutic skills without defaulting to medication. Our conversation is particularly relevant for those in crisis, where the immediacy of medication might seem appealing but may not be the ultimate answer.

As the therapy profession evolves, the tension between traditional and modern views becomes more apparent. Inspired by a young therapist's self-care controversy on TikTok, we explore how personal habits and lived experiences shape therapeutic approaches. The episode highlights the transformative power of therapy, encouraging therapists and consumers alike to share their stories. We remind listeners of the invaluable role community and support play in mental health care, inviting everyone to contribute their insights and join our ongoing conversation.

Through personal stories and staggering statistics, we reveal how withdrawal can be misinterpreted as relapse, calling for transparent discourse and genuine informed consent.

Can we break the cycle of mental health stigma and oversimplification in treatment approaches? We explore the weaponization of stigma, challenging assumptions about antidepressants' links to aggression or suicidality, especially during withdrawal. By encouraging broader, more nuanced conversations, we aim to dismantle simplistic narratives and highlight diverse experiences. As current political events ignite burnout, we share our commitment to fostering inclusive discussions, inviting listeners to engage with us and share their own stories. The discussion also humorously rebrands the 'Karen' stereotype, adding a layer of levity to a serious topic, while emphasizing the necessity of root cause medicine and functional diagnostics.

Heather doesn't stop at illness; she explores healing through somatic practices and bioenergetics, illustrating how these methods can empower individuals to overcome genetic predispositions. Delve into the significance of self-love, mindset shifts, and practical biohacking tools that Heather champions. Her insights, coupled with her comedic flair, challenge the notion of victimhood, urging listeners to embrace empowerment and personal growth. This episode is a rich blend of inspiration, practical advice, and the heartening message that healing is possible beyond chronic illness.

18 Mar 2025The Politics of Mental Health: Beyond Red and Blue00:42:52

Send us a text

Mental health is a complex subject often lost in political rhetoric, and our latest episode of the Gaslit Truth Podcast brings this to the forefront. We challenge the commonly held beliefs surrounding civil commitment laws, particularly in Oregon, as we navigate the new proposed legislation that could redefine how mental health crises are handled.

Join us as we uncover the intricate relationship between NAMI and civil commitments, confronting the ongoing narrative that embeds mental health within a political tug-of-war. As we discuss the proposed shift towards assessing a patient’s risk over a 30-day period instead of relying solely on immediate threats, we raise essential questions about the responsibilities placed upon mental health professionals. Are we setting them up for failure? And what about the rights of those in crisis?

The episode also explores the implications of these laws on vulnerable populations and their intersection with prison reform efforts. As we unpack these pressing issues, we urge our listeners to consider the ramifications of policies that may further stigmatize mental illness while failing to provide adequate support.

We encourage you to engage with us, share your thoughts, and contribute to this critical discourse as we work toward a society that advocates for comprehensive mental health care instead of merely imposing strict legal frameworks. Tune in, and let's explore the gaslit truths that shape our understanding of mental health today. Don't forget to subscribe, leave a review, and join the conversation!

26 Mar 2025Gaslit by the System: One Man's 20-Year Battle with Psychiatric Medications and Withdrawal01:02:43

Send us a text

Kevin Gundersen's story begins at age 12 when a doctor prescribed him Celexa for school anxiety. What followed was a two-decade nightmare of medication side effects, new symptoms, and medical gaslighting that robbed him of his youth and health.

With raw honesty, Kevin recounts the vicious cycle familiar to many psychiatric patients: medication side effects misdiagnosed as worsening mental illness, leading to higher doses or new medications, creating even worse symptoms. His original anxiety transformed into debilitating panic attacks, vertigo, severe blood pressure spikes reaching 260/150, and the torturous movement disorder akathisia after starting psychiatric medications.

Kevin's experience reveals how medical gaslighting extends beyond patients to families. "My parents were also gaslit," he explains, absolving them of blame for decisions made without true informed consent. This crucial insight highlights how psychiatric medication harms ripple through entire families, creating multiple victims from a single prescription.

The podcast takes listeners through Kevin's medical journey, complicated by Graves' disease and Lyme disease, and his repeated attempts to taper off medications. Most powerfully, he describes his December 2023 breaking point: "I am going to do everything in my power to get off these drugs. I don't care if I suffer every day for the rest of my life. I'm not giving any more money to these companies that have fucked me up."

Now slowly tapering and rebuilding his life, Kevin offers a profound insight that challenges psychiatric orthodoxy: "I feel the best I've felt in a long time, and I'm at the lowest dose I've been on since I was 16." His story is both a warning about the dangers of psychiatric medications and a beacon of hope for those seeking their own path to healing.

01 Apr 2025Disrupting Mental Healthcare Norms: with Raquel Hopkins Professional Counselor & Capacity Coach01:01:13

Send us a text

Three therapists pull back the curtain on an uncomfortable truth: the mental health industry often keeps us trapped in cycles of symptom management rather than helping us truly thrive.

"The Capacity Expert" Raquel Hopkins joins Dr. Tara Lynn and Therapist Jen to challenge mainstream mental health narratives that have created an emotionally fragile culture. With her unique background transitioning from corporate HR to therapy, Raquel brings a refreshingly critical perspective that questions the fundamentals of how we approach mental wellness.

Together, they explore how we've confused normal human emotions with mental illness, why gaslighting exists in all human relationships, and the danger of creating perpetual therapy clients instead of resilient individuals. "Your emotions are just internal data," Raquel explains, "not facts and not justification for how people should respond to you."

The conversation dives into controversial territory, questioning whether childhood exploration should be the default starting point in therapy and challenging the notion that our nervous system is always right about perceived threats. They discuss how the mental health industry has inadvertently contributed to a culture that rewards emotional fragility rather than building capacity to navigate life's inevitable challenges.

This episode will make you question everything you've been told about mental health and therapy. Whether you're currently in therapy, considering it, or work in the field yourself, these perspectives offer a much-needed counterbalance to prevailing narratives that have dominated the mental health conversation.

Ready to develop true resilience rather than perpetual coping mechanisms? Listen now and discover how to build the capacity to navigate life's complexities without becoming dependent on therapy or pathologizing normal human experiences.

08 Apr 2025Do Kids Really Belong in a Therapists Office?00:42:11

Send us a text

The decision to send your child to therapy seems like responsible parenting, but what if that choice follows them long after childhood ends? As licensed therapists ourselves, we're pulling back the curtain on a troubling reality that few professionals discuss openly.

Mental health diagnoses given to children as young as six or seven years old don't simply disappear when therapy ends. These labels become permanent parts of medical records that can affect military applications, government employment, insurance coverage, and more. We share real examples from our practices of young adults facing obstacles because of childhood diagnoses they've long since outgrown.

A revealing study found that over two-thirds of people who received therapy as children reported negative effects from the experience, with many developing increased stress and a sense that their problems would never improve. Perhaps most concerning is how children are routinely placed on psychiatric medications with profound physiological effects that alter their developing nervous systems.

As parents, the pressure to medicate children into compliance can be overwhelming. Schools, doctors, and even family members may insist it's the only solution for behavioral issues or learning differences. We challenge this narrative, offering practical alternatives like working with coaches, paying privately to avoid diagnoses, and exploring holistic approaches before turning to psychiatric interventions.

This isn't about shaming parents who've sought help for their children, but rather providing crucial information that's deliberately withheld from the therapy conversation. Before signing your child up for their first session, consider the potentially lifelong implications of that decision.

15 Apr 2025Gaslit Into Medicating Normal with Angie Peacock01:02:51

Send us a text

Angie Peacock's life changed forever when she sought psychiatric help after serving in Iraq. What followed was a 13-year nightmare on more than 40 psychiatric medications simultaneously – a pharmaceutical regimen that robbed her of her identity, relationships, and basic functioning.

"I completely got robbed of my twenties and thirties," Angie reveals, describing how she lost the ability to shower, read, or even watch TV while heavily medicated. Her medical records ultimately labeled her as having "chronic and persistent mental illness not likely to improve." The psychiatric establishment had written her off.

The turning point came when Angie was invited to share her story in the groundbreaking documentary "Medicating Normal." During a catastrophic cold-turkey withdrawal from benzodiazepines, she endured three years of akathisia, intrusive thoughts, and physical agony. Yet something remarkable happened – her brain began to heal itself. Without supplements, alternative therapies, or more medications, Angie's psychiatric symptoms resolved completely.

Today, Angie lives on the road in her camper van, traveling the country as a psychiatric drug withdrawal consultant and advocate for informed consent. Her story challenges everything we're told about "chemical imbalances" and lifelong medication. As she powerfully states: "These drugs have murdered my brain. That's what happened."

Through heart-wrenching honesty and moments of unexpected humor, Angie illustrates how the mental health system traps patients through gaslighting, creating symptoms that are then blamed on underlying illness rather than medication effects. Her journey demonstrates the brain's extraordinary healing capacity when freed from pharmaceutical interference.

Whether you're questioning your own psychiatric treatment, supporting a loved one through withdrawal, or simply concerned about our medication-first approach to m

22 Apr 2025Gaslit Into Taking My Own Medical Advice with Nicole Lamberson: A Medical Professional's Journey Through Medication Harm01:02:17

Send us a text

What happens when a medical professional becomes the victim of the very medications they once prescribed? Nicole Lamberson, physician assistant and medical director for the Benzodiazepine Information Coalition, takes us through her harrowing journey from stressed PA student to polypharmacy casualty to powerful advocate for medication safety.

Nicole's story begins with work-related anxiety during PA school that led to a prescription for Xanax. What followed was a five-year nightmare of escalating medications – six psychiatric drugs simultaneously, including multiple benzodiazepines, stimulants, and antipsychotics. As her health deteriorated, Nicole found herself unable to function, agoraphobic, and eventually suicidal. When she attempted to discontinue these medications, she encountered a medical system utterly unprepared to help patients safely taper off psychiatric drugs.

The podcast explores the profound gaps in medical education around deprescribing, with Nicole revealing that her professional training included "absolutely zero" instruction on safely discontinuing medications. This knowledge vacuum creates dangerous situations where withdrawal symptoms are misdiagnosed as worsening mental illness or drug-seeking behavior. Even when patients report severe adverse effects, they're often dismissed as "outliers" or told their experiences are "rare."

Through her recovery journey, Nicole became a vital voice in medication safety. She now contributes to deprescribing guidelines, works with the Withdrawal Project, distributes the documentary "Medicating Normal," and coaches individuals through psychiatric medication discontinuation. Her work balances scientific rigor with deep compassion born from lived experience.

This eye-opening conversation challenges listeners to question the narratives around psychiatric medications, advocate for themselves in medical settings, and recognize that healing
