28 Jun 2021The History and Future of the Gas Industry with Norman Shade of ACI Services Part 100:54:02

W. Norman Shade, Jr., PE Sr. Consultant & President Emeritus, ACI Services Inc. is one of the most respected and experienced voices in the gas industry. He joins host Michael Haning on part one of this two-part episode of The Gas Compression Podcast. They discuss the history of the gas industry, both in the U.S. and globally, the state of the industry today, and what the future looks like.

Norm starts at the beginning with the discovery of natural gas, which was considered a waste product at the time until engineers of the day figured out how to harness the energy present to power industrial boilers.

Norm continues through the history of the industry including the ongoing construction of the pipeline system that is vital to the industry in the U.S., the steady increase in gas production and delivery through much of the 20th century, and how the industry nearly died a slow death beginning in the 1970s.

Fortunately, the industry didn’t die, thanks to advancements in hydraulic fracturing, and Norm closes part one by discussing energy projections moving forward including the decline of coal, how natural gas is the safety net for the rise of renewable energy, and the causes and potential solutions to the rolling blackouts occurring recently in states like Texas and California.

25 Oct 2021Maintaining 98 Percent Uptime with Jeff Jackson of Kodiak Gas Services00:20:44

On this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes Jeff Jackson, Field Supervisor at Kodiak Gas Services, the largest privately-owned contract compression company in the United States.

Kodiak offers a 98% mechanical availability guarantee, which means they have technicians like Jeff on call 24/7.  That guarantee is what intrigued Jeff about the company. He thought it would be impossible, but they hit that high runtime mark month after month.

The company thrives on focusing on high level customer service, and their customers appreciate that. They have alarms on all their units, and the moment one goes down they can troubleshoot it, get the right parts, and head into the field to make things right.

Another contributing factor to the uptime is their equipment. They have 172 units in the field, and nearly all of them are Cat/Ariel, with a few smaller Gemini compressor units. Their customers know they’re serious about uptime because they use high-quality equipment.

As oil and gas prices recover, Jeff has seen wells that have been sitting for several years get fired back up, which they’re using small horsepower units on. The upturn has been good for business.

On this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes David Rutherford, Senior Engineer of Compression and Rotating Equipment at Crestwood Midstream Partners LP for an interesting discussion about the state of the industry today, and David’s philosophy on ways to maximize efficiency in their operations.

David’s career path has led him to a variety of positions in the industry, which he says has allowed him to learn the ins and outs of many aspects of the business through hands-on experience. He thinks that it is important for newcomers to the gas compression industry to step out of their comfort zone for the sake of continuing professional development.

His focus at Crestwood Midstream Partners is to get all their operations running as efficiently as possible, which saves gas and, in turn, saves money. He says that most operators have the false belief that running at slower speeds is more efficient, and David goes into some detail about why that simply isn’t true.

Those details that he and Michael dive into make this a fascinating interview that any industry professional will appreciate.

20 Sep 2021The Importance of Proper Lubrication with Curtis Roys of Patton Divider Block Systems00:48:16

On this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes Curtis Roys of Patton Divider Block Systems. Curtis has been in the gas compression industry since the late 70s, and he spends much of his time these days fixing common problems in gas compression, and training technicians so they can troubleshoot those problems in the future.

The biggest problem Curtis sees in the industry is that people don’t truly understand divider block systems, and they overlook the importance of proper lubrication in those systems. Many of the problems technicians face in the field have simple fixes, but they have never been trained on what those fixes are.

Curtis does his training in person, and he doesn’t offer online courses. He believes in the power of physically handling the parts, both new and worn, and being able to see how the parts work together to function properly.

He gives countless examples of ways compressor failures could be avoided with simple and inexpensive solutions like adding pressure gauges and valves, or eliminating air from lines. Anyone who is in the industry can learn a thing or two from this legend.

21 Feb 2022Substituting Hard Work for Education with Shawn Whitmore of Williams00:15:49

On this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes Shawn Whitmore, Operation Manager at Williams out of Wyoming.

Right away, Shawn delves into Williams' newest acquisition of 1.2 million acres in South Central Wyoming. Purchased from BP and Southland, Williams will use the land for exploration and production (E&P).

Before his 16 years at Williams, Shawn wanted more from life when he was serving in law enforcement. So he jumped on a hiring opportunity at Williams when they were expanding one of their power plants in Wyoming.

Early on at Williams, Shawn realized that nobody but himself would hold him back from what he wanted to do. He jumped on new positions, moving up the ranks where he could.

He'd assumed the bachelor's degrees of other candidates would outweigh his qualifications. One hiring manager alluded to his diversity of experience throughout the company. He had worked in various locations, with various employees, and in varying roles, which put him ahead of candidates who had a degree but less experience.

This relentless pursuit of chasing the next best opportunity has carried the pace of Shawn's career.

11 Oct 2021A New Generation of Technicians with Andrew Brill of Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology00:27:33

On this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes Andrew Brill, Coordinator/Instructor of Natural Gas Compression at Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology, who talks about his career path that led to his current position, running a program preparing the next generation of gas compression technicians to thrive in the industry.

Andrew’s passion for the program is infectious, and based on his own life experience. He was struggling to make ends meet as an auto mechanic when he got into gas compression. As he says, it changed his life.

The program is two years, and Andrew strives to achieve a balance between practical training and theory. He wants his students to know what they’re doing, and he thinks it’s important that they also know why they’re doing it.

The students work on actual equipment using the same tools they will be using after graduation. They do a paid externship during the summer, where they get valuable experience working as young professionals with top companies in the industry.

Covid hit the program pretty hard, and there is room for new students interested in learning this interesting profession.

06 Jul 2022Fine-Tuning Failure Analyses with Jim Dettore of Failure Analysis Services00:35:36

On this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes Jim Dettore, President at Failure Analysis Services, Inc.

With over three decades of machining background and over two decades working for Caterpillar dealers, Jim details his experience transitioning to failure analysis services.

What is the typical failure analysis procedure and what are the best practices? Jim gives a thorough walkthrough, skimming across the surface of the complexities involved in diagnosing the failure. He provides a multitude of questions to gather as much factual data as possible and interpret those facts and why the failure occurred.

Jim estimates that about 75% of failures are due to contamination and lack of cleanliness. Any time the compressor frame or engine is opened up, it risks contamination. The environment for servicing work should be contained and clean if at all possible.

Before the pandemic, Failure Analysis Services hosted 30 classes a year and is now offering in-person courses again. Check out their website for more details.

03 Jan 2022An Optimistic Bunch with Brent Haight of Gas Compression Magazine00:33:45

On this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes back Brent Haight, publisher of Gas Compression Magazine, for his second appearance on the show.

Gas Compression Magazine recently released the results from the annual state-of-the-industry poll, which received nearly 2,000 responses from people involved in the industry from all over the world. Michael and Brent dive into the details of each of the 14 questions to make sense of what is going on with the industry today, and what the future holds.

A hot topic in the industry today is environmental, social and governance (ESG). In the poll, 85% said they were either complying, embracing, or leading the way on ESG. A mere 7% said they are resisting.

One result that jumped out was that 69% of the respondents said that capital spending at their company will be the same or higher next year than it was this year — a much higher number than last year’s poll. Brent says, people in the industry are “an optimistic bunch.”

Brent points out that the poll was answered by all walks of life in the industry. That gives it a true insight over the entire industry.

20 Dec 2021Marketing to Attract Top Talent with Greg Hayne of Hayne Coaching Group00:32:53

On this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning kicks off a series of interviews talking to blue collar industry experts and sharing some insights related to the labor crisis that has been called the Great Resignation.

Michael talks with Greg Hayne, Chief Innovation Officer at Hayne Coaching Group, an organization that helps commercial roofing contractors build better, more profitable service departments. And how? By teaching them the best practices used by the best service contractors in the country.

Greg has some great insights that apply to any industry, not just commercial roofing. He says a major problem business owners are having is self-inflicted: They aren’t paying a living wage. If you want to attract and retain top talent, you have to show them you care — and that starts with making sure they can take care of their families.

He stresses the fact that if you own a trade company, stop thinking of your company in terms of being plumbers or roofers, and start thinking of your company as a business. Learn how to market to potential labor as well as potential customers.

It’s thoughtful stuff that applies directly to the gas compression industry.

20 Aug 2021Focusing on the Future with Brian Green of TOPS LLC00:31:24

On this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes Brian Green, Chief Operating Officer at TOPS LLC, an oilfield equipment rental company specializing in the natural gas compression market.

Brian talks about his decision to join TOPS (which was founded by his father) in 2006, not long after he graduated from Baylor University with a degree in economics. Since he has been there, the company has experienced tremendous growth in the highly competitive market of the Permian Basin.

Brian has overseen a push to have a rental fleet of state-of-the-art electric-driven gas compressors. The company is now 92% electric-driven.

He also talks about how he sees the industry innovating, for instance with solar power, or capturing natural gas that is currently flared at night to generate power.

He also describes the challenges his business faces with the disruption of the supply chain since the Covid crisis began, how he feels the gas industry is mischaracterized by politicians and the media, and the difficulty many in the industry have finding skilled workers.

16 Jan 2022Blue Collar Recruiting with Michelle Blevins of C&R Magazine00:27:07

On this episode of the Skilled Trade Series on The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes Michelle Blevins, Owner and Publisher of C&R Magazine, the only independently-owned publication dedicated to serving cleaning and restoration contractors.

The cleaning and restoration industry is full of blue-collar jobs, and finding the right workers can be challenging. As Michelle points out, technicians have to be on call 24/7, and they may be asked to crawl into a spider-infested crawl space or into a burnt-out building full of toxins.

Because of the nature of the work, she says it is vital to have a culture at your company that gives team members a feeling of belonging and importance. Pay is important, but in cleaning and restoration, treating employees with respect, training them up, and showing them a clear path to make it a career — and not just a job — is just as important.

Michelle has a background in recruiting, and she believes that business leaders and owners should always be recruiting, especially in the current job market. She advises that you move quickly when you identify a quality candidate. Drag your feet and they’ll go somewhere else.

Louis (Bunky) Dussetschleger, Field Technician at K&R Operating LLC, has been in the gas compression industry for over 27 years. He joins host Michael Haning on this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast to discuss the history of the gas industry as seen from Bunky’s eyes out in the field, what the future looks like in the gas industry, and what employers should know about finding, training, and keeping new talent in the industry.

Bunky started in the industry as a young man and, with his background as a mechanic, he was quickly put in a service truck and “booted out in the field,” where he quickly learned he had to prove himself without the help of any of the veterans.

After years of being out in the field, he eventually settled into his current role in the rental compression business, where he turns his hand to any type of work you can think of, from rebuilds to overhauls, on all types of equipment from old school to the most modern.

His experience gives Bunky a clear insight into how the industry works, and how the industry might work better moving forward.

09 Jan 2022Blue Collar Cash with Ken Rusk of Rusk Industries00:25:18

On the second episode of the Skilled Trade Series on The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes Ken Rusk, President of Rusk Industries and author of the book, Blue Collar Cash.

Ken is a professional ditch digger. He started doing it as a summer job in high school and eventually started his own company, which today includes over 200 team members.

Ken talks about the decision that high schools made in the 80s to get rid of shop classes and replace them with computer classes, and he brings up a good point: Why did it have to be an either/or decision?

He is not anti-college, but the reality is that college just isn’t the right path for some young people. People who learn a skill and work in the trades can make just as much or more than people with a college degree, and they aren’t saddled with a massive amount of debt from student loans.

He believes that creating a positive culture is critical to having a successful company in the trades. Invest in your people. Find out their goals. Celebrate with them when goals are achieved.

Your people are your best asset.

28 Feb 2022Family-Owned, Operated, and Grown with Jason Herrick of Pantera Energy00:26:23

On this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes Jason Herrick, President at Pantera Energy.

Pantera is based out of Amarillo, Texas, and was founded by Jason's father. He went out with a geologist and landman and started buying up fields from large oil and gas clearinghouses. Their strategy had been to look for more long-life fields to set up an asset base, then partner with other companies to service their pumps.

Before joining the operation in 2001, Jason went to the Netherlands with a consulting startup. There he gained people skills and learned the trades of the European environment.

When Jason started in 2001, Pantera had about 120 properties. At present, Pantera operates about 1,800 wells, employing a heavy acquisition strategy.

Behind their expansion success, Jason credits their ability to find ways to maximize production. Pantera has eliminated many contractor roles by training ground employees to handle their daily needs. Jason points out that the consistency gained from this has been invaluable.

Jason also discusses how they have weathered the pandemic and what they look forward to in 2022 and beyond.
