06 Feb 2024Avoiding and Managing Running Related Injuries with Physiotherapist Elliot Cooke00:35:01

Welcome to season 2, episode 2 of The Fuel Run Recover Podcast! In this week's episode, I sat down with fellow runner and physiotherapist Elliot Cooke to talk about all things running and injuries.

We answer questions like, why do we keep hearing that running is bad for our joints? and, how can runners keep their joints healthy? How much does wearing the right (or wrong) shoes play a role in developing injuries?

A little more about Elliot:

Elliott graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Master of Physical Therapy and a Bachelor of Science (Chemistry and Biology). He practiced at Elite Physiotherapy for three years before deciding to open a new clinic with a modern approach to Physiotherapy.

Elliott is a certified professional with The Running Clinic, SFMA levels 1 and 2, Acupuncture, Dry Needling, and Orthopaedic level 1. Elliott has also taken further education in Spinal Manipulation, TMJ pain, Long-COVID Rehabilitation, Hip OA, Pelvic Girdle Dysfunction, and Mulligan Mobilizations.

Elliott competed for the University of Manitoba Bisons as a Captain of the Track and Field and Cross Country teams. He raced middle distance and distance events, specializing in the 3000m. He has run several half marathons, shorter local races, trail races, and one marathon. He was most recently the winner of the 2024 Frostbite River Run 5 Km, and the 2023 Manitoba Marathon 10 Km.

Elliott spends his leisure time running, skiing, sailing, and playing squash. He is an armchair physicist and, despite being a lousy gardener, still loves to cook.

Artificial sweeteners have been a long-time hot topic of debate that have been making their way back into the headlines recently. This may have you even more confused and unsure on if they’re safe and if you should be consuming them or not.

In this week’s episode, I’m breaking everything down and telling you exactly what they are, where you can find them, if they’re safe to use, and if you should be consuming them as a runner.

26 Dec 2023Do Runners Need to Follow a Meal Plan? (re-release)00:42:51

In this week's re-release episode, we're talking meal planning. Do runners need one? Why is it that so many runners think they want or need a meal plan to eat well, only to wind up not sticking with it? What is the real 'secret ingredient' to healthy eating that will help you stick to your nutrition plan?

While meal plans aren't a bad thing to have, or to follow (inside The Fuel Train Recover Club you'll find plenty of sample meal plans for a variety of dietary needs), they aren't the only thing runners need in order to fuel properly for their running goals.

22 Apr 2025Let’s Talk About Fueling Short Runs (Yes, Even 10Ks!)00:47:01

Welcome to season 3, episode 12 of The Fuel Run Recover podcast, where we're talking about fueling for short workouts and races, yes even if you don't technically 'need to'.
There’s a trend I keep seeing online—runners bragging about how little they fuel or hydrate during long runs or races, flexing about fasted workouts, and downplaying the need for carbs or hydration. Even some running books and coaches still promote training in a glycogen-depleted state. So in this episode, we’re unpacking it all.

You’ll learn why some runners are drawn to the "no fuel, no hydration" mentality, and why others prioritize performance, enjoyment, and longevity in the sport. Spoiler alert: it’s not about who’s right or wrong—it’s about different perspectives, beliefs, and goals.

As a running coach and dietitian, I’m here to break down why fueling—even for workouts or races you technically could complete without it—can be a total game-changer for performance, recovery, and enjoyment.

In this episode, I cover:

  • Why some runners love “the grind” and prefer to train or race with as little support as possible

  • A contrasting mindset: optimizing performance and enjoying the experience

  • The science behind why carbs improve performance in endurance sports

  • Why hitting the wall, walking the last few miles, or constantly bonking could be a fueling issue

  • How under-fueling can negatively impact muscle mass and body composition

  • The importance of gut training during your workouts—not just on race day

  • The truth about fasted training and glycogen depletion

  • Why even short races like 10Ks and half marathons can benefit from fuel and hydration strategies

  • Practical reasons to fuel during training (gear, logistics, GI practice, etc.)

Whether you’re newer to running or a seasoned pro, this episode will help you reflect on your approach to fueling and why the “just because I can doesn’t mean I should” mindset might be worth exploring.

27 Nov 2023Discovering a Love of Running with Laura Lutes00:51:41

In this week’s episode, I sat down with Laura Lutes, a Fuel Train Recover graduate who shares her super relatable journey of going from 'effortless athlete' as a teen and young adult, to needing to learn the right ways to train and fuel her body to actually enjoy running and stay (mostly) injury free.

A new(ish) runner, Laura began running consistently in August 2020 while living in Ottawa. Despite some apprehensions about going from casual runner to racer, Laura is looking forward to her very first trail race, with her sights eventually set on the Squamish 50km. Even though Laura doesn't describe "running as my therapy" (she says she has therapy for that!), Running is an important coping mechanism for her. She sees it as a chance to get out of her own head and go on little adventures in her neighbourhood and local trails.

Running with her dog Goose always helps slow her down to allow for his sniff breaks!

04 Jun 2024Protein Powder and Your Gut Health with Jack Schrupp from Drink Wholesome00:39:37

Welcome to season 2 episode 19 of The Fuel Run Recover podcast, where I'm so excited to bring you this great conversation all about protein powder with Jack Schrupp, founder of Drink Wholesome!

A little bit about Jack:

Jack created drink wholesome in 2020 because he wanted a protein powder that didn’t upset his stomach, and he made just that using a short list of simple ingredients. At the time, there were no protein powders made specifically for people with digestive issues, so drink wholesome filled a significant gap in the market. Jack has now sold over 1,000,000 pouches of protein powder to people with sensitive stomachs. Before starting drink wholesome, Jack was a two-sport college athlete who later worked as a high school teacher and ski coach. He now runs the business with his sister, Tessa, in Gilford, New Hampshire (USA).

26 Sep 2023Why You Shouldn't Take Nutrition Advice From Just Anyone00:44:22

In today's episode of The Fuel Run Recover Podcast, I'm breaking down why runners need to be oh so extra careful about where they get their nutrition advice from. This isn't because people are trying to give bad information or share advice that might be harmful to others, but because we all have a deeply personal relationship with food that can cause some folks to feel a stronger emotional connection to their chosen way of eating. Not to mention that many folks in the diet realm have a lot of money invested in selling a certain book, product, or program. This passion for a certain way of eating can lead to a lot of defensiveness at times, and manipulating of things like science or evidence to support a specific belief system.

So, today we're talking about why what works for one person won't necessarily work for everyone, and how even within the running community we can sometimes support some pretty 'bad' behaviours or advice just because people doing very extreme things with their diet or training endeavors tend to get a lot of attention on social media.

And finally, I'm sharing some key things you can be looking out for when getting connected with a nutrition professional to help ensure you have a great experience and receive the personalized information and strategy you need to get the best possible results that you deserve.

18 Jul 2023A Conversation With Ultrarunner Charlie Engle01:07:40

I'm so excited to bring you this week's episode, where I had the pleasure of sitting down with legendary ultrarunner Charlie Engle!

A little about Charlie...

Charlie Engle is a global ultra-endurance athlete and the founder of the 5.8 Global Adventure Series, one of the most ambitious expeditions in modern history, trekking from the lowest to the highest points on all seven continents. He is also one of the most accomplished ultramarathon runners in the world, having placed in hundreds of races in dozens of countries.

His incredible athletic ability was profiled in the film, Running the Sahara, narrated by Matt Damon. The documentary highlighted his historic, record-setting journey with his two teammates across the world's largest desert, running more than two marathons a day for 111 consecutive days, for a total of 4,500 miles. Charlie's transcontinental run through deep sand and politically unstable countries remains one of the premier accomplishments in the ultra-endurance and adventure sports worlds. After crossing the Sahara and seeing the global water crisis first-hand, Charlie raised more than $6 million for clean water projects in Africa and helped establish an organization called H20Africa, now known as Water.org, one of the largest water nonprofit in the world.

Charlie's memoir, Running Man, became a bestseller shortly after it was published in 2016. While the book details his inspiring life story, it is about more than just running. It is about facing demons, overcoming impossible odds, keeping your sense of humor and discovering the redemptive power of putting one foot in front of the other, even when you feel like you can't keep going.

His motivation to run and tackle extreme adventures stems from his battle with addiction to drugs and alcohol. Charlie has been in recovery since July 23, 1992, and he credits a large part of his recovery to the purposeful devotion and emotional release he experiences while running. He has said that "Drugs and alcohol were my way out. Running was my way through."

Charlie is a dynamic speaker who has enthralled audiences around the world, from keynotes at the Boston Marathon and Google to the National Geographic Society, the United Nations and the deck of a nuclear-class U.S. Naval aircraft carrier.

He's been featured in the New York Times, National Geographic Weekend, Outside, Runner's World, NPR's All Things Considered, Men's Journal, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He lives with his wife, Astacianna Hatcher, in Durham, North Carolina.

07 May 2024Faster After Babies? Post-Partum Running with Jessie Gruca and Erin Van Schyndle 00:47:39

Welcome to season 2 episode 15 of The Fuel Run Recover podcast! This week I'm bringing you our very first panel discussion, with not one, but TWO fellow running coaches to talk about returning to running after babies!

In this episode we discuss some of the challenges runners can face post-partum, but also why your potential as a runner doesn't need to go out the window after having kids!

Erin Van Schyndle is a Postpartum Run Coach and Personal Trainer. She has been working in prenatal and postpartum fitness for 14 years and is a UESCA certified run coach. She has run everything from 5ks to marathons and 70.3 triathlon distances. Erin became passionate about helping postpartum runners after her own postpartum running experience was anything but easy. It seemed like any time she got some momentum, she would get injured, sick, or burnt out. She finally reached out to a physical therapist and run coach who specifically worked with postpartum women. It was a complete game changer. After Erin had such a great experience with a coach, she got her run coaching certification and took additional training on postpartum running. She loves helping other postpartum runners get back to the sport they love. You can find Erin at therunningdoula.com and @erintherunningdoula on instagram.

Jessie is a Boston Qualifying runner who is on a journey to complete a marathon in all 50 states began as a way to visit friends and travel since has completed 25 marathons (in 23 states) along with multiple 5Ks, 10Ks, and half marathons. She has also had her experience as a triathlete completing many Sprint and Olympic distance triathlons along with a half Ironman. Her motivation has allowed her to self-coach herself to PRs after reading multiple running books before finally deciding to get her RRCA running coach certification in 2021, to be able to help other runners improve their running and find the thrill as well. Her current PRs are a 19:32 5K, 1:30 half marathon, and 3:13 marathon. She has her own run coaching business Running with Roses and also assists with run coaching for Running Explained.

10 Dec 2024This Winnipeg Mom Can Run!00:30:59

Welcome to season 2 episode 45 of The Fuel Run Recover Podcast, where I'm thrilled to bring you this conversation with Winnipeg runner and Fuel Train Recover Club member, Wendy! Wendy just started running this year, and has been an incredible example of how by being consistent, taking things slow, and believing in yourself, you can achieve anything you set your mind to!

Here's a little more about Wendy...

My name is Wendy. I am a wife, mom & runner! I am middle age, mid sized and started running in January 2024.

I am a medical laboratory technologist but do not work in the typical lab setting. Currently I work at a corporate job which has me sitting at a desk for long periods of time. My sister had a heart attack in 2023 so in January 2024 I decided I needed to become more active and also try to reduce my heart disease risk. So, in January 2024 I signed up for the 5km run @ the mb marathon. I have no prior running experience other than that from middle school, which was many, many years ago!

While training for my 1st  run, I started noticing the mental health benefits.  Sticking to a routine, getting outdoors, moving my body, and prioritizing "my run time" made me a much nicer person! I completed the 5km run and felt incredible crossing the finish line & having my husband & son there cheering me on.  I guess you could say I got hooked to running! I completed the winnipeg 10&10 5km run, wfps 10km run and the frightening fiver all this year.

I am a regular mom, working fulltime and dealing with family responsibilities however I think its important for us to take care of ourselves so we can take care of our families. I encourage you to Sign up for a race, believe that you can do it & challenge yourself.

22 Oct 2024Injury Prevention With Better Running Mechanics with Dr. Caleb Beland00:53:35

Welcome to season 2, episode 38 of The Fuel Run Recover podcast, where I'm excited to bring you this in-depth conversation all about staying healthy and injury free as a runner by improving running mechanics, with Chiropractor, coach, and runner Dr. Caleb Beland.

Caleb’s journey into chiropractic began during his high school years in Sudbury, where he developed a deep passion for the sport and fitness. His dedication continued at Laurentian University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. There, he competed at both provincial and national levels in running and conducted a thesis on the biomechanical differences between long-distance and middle-distance runners at various speeds.

Driven by a growing fascination with running mechanics, Caleb started coaching elementary and high school athletes. Today, he employs gait assessment as an essential tool in his practice, helping to identify factors that influence injuries, performance, and overall experience in sports and activities.

After graduating from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, Caleb began utilizing soft tissue therapy, spinal manipulation therapy, joint mobilizations, acupuncture, and other techniques to assist patients and athletes in recovering from injuries and returning to their favourite activities. He takes great joy in helping others find or rekindle their love for movement. He collaborates with individuals of all ages and abilities, ensuring their training and rehabilitation progress at an appropriate pace, whether they are recovering from an injury or gearing up for their first race.

Outside the clinic, Caleb trains for races ranging from 5k to half marathons. He is often seen running along the Lake Ontario waterfronts, joining others who share his enthusiasm for the sport.

Welcome to season 2 Episode 10 of The Fuel Run Recover Podcast where I talk to Samantha Clemens, Clinical Psychologist and Ultra-Runner who shares her story of learning to fuel her body for endurance running while developing a healthier relationship with food and exercise.

Get to know Sam!

Samantha Clemens is a clinical psychologist and co-director of a large mental health clinic in the San Francisco Bay Area. Samantha's journey in running is marked by significant milestones, including her first 5K and marathon in the same year. From there, she delved deeper into the running world, participating in numerous marathons, half marathons, and even ultra races. Throughout her running endeavors, Samantha found unwavering support and companionship from her sister, who has been her dedicated running partner. Their most recent adventure took them to Colorado for a challenging 3-day, 60-mile stage race.

Sam's relationship with food has been complex, marked by a history of struggles with dieting and food restriction since childhood. Recognizing the need for a healthier mindset, she sought the guidance of Steph to help her finally make peace with food.

30 May 2023Fueling Better and Feeling Stronger Than Ever - Bridget's Story00:42:02

In this episode, I sat down with one of my very own nutrition and running clients Bridget, who shared her running journey and story of over 20 completed marathons! But, despite having so many years of running and race experience, Bridget still had plenty of potential for learning more about fueling properly for her running needs as a vegetarian, and incorporating more strength work into her program so she could feel better than ever while running. Listen to her story and prepare to be inspired by what you can accomplish too!

Here's more about Bridget!

When I was a kid hiking breath-taking mountains with my Dad, he taught me that “nothing worthwhile is easy”. He never ran but he inspires my running to this day. I ran my first race in 1986 loved it and thereafter flirted with running for about twenty years, enjoying it, but never quite believing I could run more than a half-marathon. Finally, a high school friend Lisa inspired me to run the Paris marathon with her in the spring of 2005. After that affirming run, I’ve been fortunate enough to run at least one marathon a year (except for 2021), experiencing many joyful adventures in beautiful parts of the world, and running the Comrades ultra-marathon back-to back. My Dad’s running advice was: “Do your best and have fun” and that perfectly captures the spirit of running for me.

I’ve benefited greatly from running and I’m very motivated to share my love of running with others. In 2012 some friends and I started the Point Douglas fund-raising fun-run; the focus of which is camaraderie and the joy of running. 100% of the profits go to valuable local community centers. The captivating route starts and ends in the beautiful Michaëlle Jean Park and crisscrosses the Red River passing by historical points of interest, including the childhood home of Sir William Stephenson (Intrepid), and Barber House (one of Winnipeg’s earliest buildings).

I’m a firm believer that the camaraderie between runners essentially makes it a team sport. I’m very grateful to the running community, race volunteers and spectators.

“Long may we run” and continue to enjoy the fantastic gift of running.
