28 Jan 2024 | Paul Bainsfair (IPA) - the 60:40 rule | 01:15:26
Is the advertising business a form of business or
entertainment? It needs to be entertaining but there definitely is a science to
it.
Paul Bainsfair is the Director General of the IPA – the Institute
of Practitioners in Advertising. He’s a veteran of the industry, with
board-level experience at TBWA, Saatchis and Iris, he’s using his 35+ years in
the business to champion the cause of advertising as a driver of the economy.
But he’s also acutely aware of the issues facing the world
of advertising – the environment, DE&I, frequency and advertising fatigue.
So, the IPA’s focus for 2024 is the 60:40 rule and helping
companies and brands to strike a balance between brand building and activation –
as the old song goes, like love and marriage, you can’t have one without the
other.
In this wide-ranging chat, Paul and I discuss the difference
between US and UK advertising, why ads need to deliver the relevant unexpected,
the latest Bellwether reports and a marketing budget forecast for the next 12
months, the wisdom of Tim Delaney, balancing the standards, saving the economy,
new business opportunities for all agencies, the analogy of steam trains and
Irish songwriters.

26 Jul 2022 | Paul Grubb: The Man Who Sold The World | 02:08:17
Paul Grubb literally emerged from the rubble of a building site in Sheffield and was the first hire that the legendary Dave Trott made when he started Gold Greenless Trott in 1980 with Mike Greenless and Mike Gold. GGT went on to be named The Most Creative Agency In The World and soon became a rebel with a cause in Ad land, bringing a unique twist on the world of advertising, thanks largely to Paul's approach.
Constant reinvention is a driving force behind Paul’s work and he went on to co-found DFGW Duckworth Finn Grubb Waters which throughout the 90s and early 00s was one of London’s most successful creative independent agencies.
Living in Bangkok, Paul now oversees the ASEAN creative work for the Ford Motor Company.
This is a 'Super-show' best consumed in one go, but even if you so hit the pause button, please listen all the way through because Paul is a gold mine of insight and advice for growing agencies. There's also some great stories from the early days of his career!

03 Sep 2022 | Rachel Konrad - The Queen of Green: How humans can avoid extinction | 01:40:18
Like Donald Trump after an FBI raid, the climate deniers' argument keeps changing. Rachel Konrad stands on the battlements for our planet and challenges the fossil fuel companies and the intensive farming lobby every day. Hailing from Motown itself - Detroit to become one of Silicon Valley's leading tech evangelists, Rachel knows only too well the environmental catastrophe we face and she's leading the charge to help educate us and show us that marketing can be used as a force for good as well as bad.
In this show, Rachel walks us through her journey to enlightenment and explains how the powerful lobbyists for the meat industry and the fossil fuel industry have hijacked the narrative to benefit their bottom line.
The answer is actually very simple and all it needs is a common-sense, bullshit-free perspective. Rachel is pretty much the ambassador for common sense and straight-talking, so watch out for some hard truths and uncomfortable facts.
Being disruptive is destructive and it comes with its own challenges. Rachel's job as Chief Brand Officer at The Production Board, a unique venture foundry created by Dave Friedberg focused on businesses that reverse global warming and improve human health stands at the vanguard of the green tech movement.
In this show Rachel also outlines the 3 leading factors for successful plant-based food marketing and why having a moral righteousness is critical if companies want to avoid greenwashing claims. She also spills the beans on Elon Musk's work ethic and provides the perfect response to anyone who tells her to calm down.

22 Sep 2022 | Gustav Martner - Greenpeace: This is Fine | 01:06:39
It's not fine. It's far from fine. It's about as far from fine as it could be. Gustav Martner is the Creative Director of Greenpeace Nordics and earlier this year, he handed back one of his many Cannes Lions as a headline-grabbing protest against the advertising industry that is still rewarding companies that are causing maximum harm to our planet, while they gaslight us into thinking they are doing good.
Enough already! It has to stop and Gustav explains why.
He's on a mission to have advertising from fossil fuel companies banned and if your agency works for a fossil fuel company, then he's coming for your budgets.
And a milder, more level-headed guy you couldn't wish to meet. He's not some tree-hugging hippie that glues himself to the motorway. He understands the whole argument because he's been on the other side of the fence, running agencies and working for big oil, big aviation and big auto but he's seen the light...and it's fading fast.
Here's a show about how the advertising industry can still do what it does best, but as forces of good for the planet.

06 Oct 2022 | Kevin Taylor: The subtle art of negotiation | 01:23:15
Lawman Kevin Taylor once had to negotiate for his own life with a shotgun shoved in his face. He's also had to negotiate for other people's lives too, because he's been at the sharp end of hostage negotiation for decades.
These days, he prefers the cut and thrust of boardroom to the perils of policing but the skills translate to the business and sports worlds, where he’s paid to help parties achieve a win.
Negotiation is one of the foundations of the new business world but most of us have no training in the art – we just make it up as we go along.
And without knowing how to get the best deal for you and your prospect, you’re always turning up to a gunfight with a banana.
Spend the next hour and a bit listening to one of the UK’s best negotiators, spreading the wisdom about the subtle art of negotiation.

He's also about to embark on an exciting new venture with comedy screenwriter Richard Curtis. We hear all about that and Peter passes on his learnings from a prolific 40-year career in advertising.

29 Nov 2022 | Orr Vinegold - Unrest: Tomorrow's World | 01:28:36
With all the outcry about how the big FMCG companies are greenwashing us and brands are gaslighting the general public into buying more of their products, just what are the alternatives for savvy consumers? Where are the products of the future coming from?
Orr Vinegold is the leader of business accelerator Unrest – an incubator committed to coaching the next generation of founders and giving them best-of-breed advice.
And Unrest should know because it’s part of creative superstar Uncommon – a previous guest of the show and one that left an indelible mark on the debate around the real meaning of creativity.
Orr Vinegold has got all the chops – he’s poacher turned gamekeeper, following an illustrious career with some of the behemoths of the consumer goods world but now he’s turning all his skills into helping companies that put planet and purpose before profit – not just ticking boxes but vetting the founder’s DNA to make sure they do what they claim. Having selected his lucky stable of companies, the team at Unrest then go about making sure they get best of bred advice and help to launch their business, giving it one of the best starts a business could want, including marketing, positioning, strategy and funding.
This is a blockbuster of a show and only we dare to go where others don’t. This is more than a podcast, it’s a complete guide to modern marketing and we were honoured to spend so much time with Orr.
This show is packed with extras for you, including a wonderful bit by our returning hero Jeremy Davies who takes down Elon Musk quicker than a tweet about exploding Teslas.
We also pay tribute to our impressive guest line-up across the year, with a rap/poem that name checks all our wonderful agency guests.
We hope that you've had a busy year and we've included a little Christmas Easter egg right at the end of the show for you.

29 Oct 2023 | Liam Keogh - Palm PR: The Land of Mylk and B+tter | 01:22:09
How to build a PR agency for the future
Liam Keogh is the co-founder of PALM PR, arguably the UK’s most creative independent PR agency working in the food and drink and hospitality sector.
He's one of those guys who runs through walls to make stuff happen – and it shows in how his agency works.
Collaborating with his team to identify future clients, issues and policies that ensure everyone plays a role in the progression of the agency is just one of the secrets of his success
Palm PR is also the agency behind the controversial petition to get the Government to stop preventing plant-based innovators from using words like “Milk”, “Cheese” and “Butter” in their product descriptions and marketing .
Currently, in the UK there is a blockade on the use of these words and Palm PR argues that this is directly impeding innovation in the industry.
This is very typical of the spirit and energy that Liam and his sister Emily have built Palm PR on.
Employee-owned Palm is a true innovator, which the PR industry has recognised through all the awards and acknowledgements it has garnered in its history.
Liam explains how to tick all the boxes to create an agency that is built for the 2030s.

13 Apr 2024 | The Howard Gossage Show - with Steve Harrison & Dave Dye | 01:26:37
Howard Gossage - often dubbed the "Socrates of San Francisco," revolutionised advertising in the 1950s and 60s with his unconventional and humanistic approach. So it took two equally unconventional and humanistic creatives - Steve Harrsion and Dave Dye, to write - no, craft - a book documenting some of the most captivating and exemplary pieces of Gossage's short but prolific career, producing a form of advertising so ahead of its time that we're only now catching up with it.
The problem is, that, like the man in the river surrounded by crocodiles, we’ve forgotten that the original objective was to get to the other side.
We’ve forgotten the point of advertising - and that is to entertain.
Gossage was a born showman and it lived and breathed in his work, which is what makes it sadly unique.
If you’ve never been Gossaged before, I suggest you start here. If you have, then I hope you’ll appreciate this podcast and an opportunity to reminisce on a lost period of advertising that we still have a chance to reclaim and make advertising great again.
Thank you to Steve Harrison and Dave Dye for a memorable podcast. If it sounds a bit jumpy, I apologise and hope that it doesn’t spoil your listening enjoyment. We had to record it in two goes and splice the best bits together because of a technical SNAFU.

05 Jun 2024 | Paul Feldwick: The Pedlar's Song | 01:43:54
The undeniable link between advertising and entertainment explained by Paul Feldwick, the author of ‘Why Does the Pedlar Sing?’
Paul’s investigation into this subject began a few years ago when he worked in senior planning roles in some of the world’s biggest advertising agencies.
As our focus on metrics and data increases, it seems our understanding of the basic principles of marketing is similarly decreasing.
Since the first time a person sold another person something, we’ve always tried to make it an enjoyable experience and the industry-wide pearl-clutching over the apparent lack of creativity in our profession can be easily explained by an expert of Paul’s calibre.
This is as enjoyable a podcast as I’ve ever done and Paul is a wonderful storyteller. The show was a revelation to me, as it triggered memories of my own childhood and a series of artworks called ‘The Cries of London’.

04 Jul 2024 | Nick Asbury: The Road to Hell - The corruption of 'purpose'. | 01:11:03
The road to hell is paved with good intentions, says the proverb. Never has that been truer than in the case of corporate purpose, the movement that took over the business and advertising world following the financial crisis of 2008.
Nick Asbury, creative writer, corporate purpose critic, poet, songsmith, humorist and author of the new blockbuster book The Road to Hell, discusses his perspective on how the advertising and marketing business became consumed with the idea of doing good to the detriment of everything else.
We cover the wide and varied reactions to the book from the industry, the rights and wrongs of BCorp, Edelman's Trust Barometer, the link between tobacco & purpose marketing, Paul Feldwick's superb definition of "creativity", Nick Cave and AI and how ChatGPT's creator OpenAI has switched its purpose-driven goals.

01 Mar 2023 | Steve Rawling: storytelling (and story selling) tactics | 01:04:13
Why do we tell stories?
Storytelling in all its forms has been a way of expressing an idea or information in a way that makes it memorable.
Storytelling allows us to see each other more clearly and to empathize. We tell stories because we are human or are we human because we tell stories?
Selling stories is the very essence of PR and yet there’s very little in the way of formal training for this.
And what about new business? Isn’t the art of selling the art of telling?
Pip Decks was first created by Charles Burdett, a UX consultant and designer, that works like a recipe card and Steve Rawlings' Storyteller tactics is a way to ditch dull presentations and tell great stories.
Steve gives us an hour of pointers to help us weave a better tale, to engage and inspire our prospects and clients.

01 May 2023 | Martin Galton: A Compulsive Creative | 01:27:58
What does it mean to be a creative director?
Martin Galton is another of the UK’s rare cohort of absolutely, dyed-in-the-wool, 100% actual factual creative geniuses.
This is a rare opportunity to discover what makes creatives tick. In the interview, Martin reveals some of the secrets to unleashing your inner creative using some very simple techniques.
We also learn how Martin got his break in the industry by copying Jesus; how juxtaposition created a 100 movie franchise, how to compose and opera for salad, why research is the enemy of creativity and the simplest ever definition of the purpose of advertising.
What fun we had discussing all the hits of the past as well as some of the new entries such as flexible working, shit meetings, winning business, the power of yes and an amazing idea for one lucky outdoor media company – are you listening Ocean or Posterscope?
We also have a very lengthy discussion about artificial intelligence – some insights that you might find very revealing!
Like all good operas Martin ends on the highest note possible with an unbeatable story about Muhammad Ali.

29 May 2023 | Matt Smith: Will A.I. make photographers extinct? | 00:53:14
Are the new image generation Ai engines going to create an extinction-level event for photographers?
Just when the profession gets into its stride, with dark room process computer software available to everyone, along comes AI to kill off the very source of the original image.
Or does it?
What have photographers got that AI doesn’t have?
Matt Smith is one of America’s most creative product photographers. His studio is one of only 4 in the country that can create full 360-degree ‘spinning’ product images for ecommerce.
Not computer generated images.
Actual photographs.
Every job is painstakingly set up, lit and shot, whether it’s a full size Ford F250, an outdoor patio set, a contact lens or a chicken nugget.
Matt and his team are creatives, engineers, programmers, woodworkers and photographers. His studio is like a year-round Elves’ workshop.
But as we’re about to hear, he’s got the one thing that AI doesn’t have and will never have.
But if AI isn’t going to steal his lunch it’s probably going to put a couple of drinks on his tab and in this episode, we find out how the two disciplines are learning to work together.
If you love photography, if you’re fascinated by the potential of AI or if you want to learn more about the wonderful world of creative ecommerce product image production, then this is the show for you.

How can we talk to people if we don’t even understand their reality?
In 2017 Nick Looby wrote a book called ‘Modern Zombies - How to Stay Ahead of the Horde and Communicate your way to Incredible Success’ in which he predicted pretty much everything we're now experiencing in terms of the distracting effect that technology has on our ability to be human.
I talk to Nick as he begins to sketch out a sequel and offers some new insights on not only the societal effects of social media and our devices, but delves into the world of Ai and how this is possibly going to eviscerate what we know and understand as human relationships.
How is this going to impact our working and domestic lives?
We discuss:
The attraction of distraction
Channeling Empathy, Rapport, and human resonance
The danger of the infinite scroll
Why we use soft terms to describe terrible things

27 Aug 2023 | Andrew Bloch: My Way | 02:00:38
Andrew Bloch is one of the PR industry’s most well-known stars. After fate sent him as a student through the doors of Lynne Franks PR, probably the coolest and most famous PR agency of the 90s, Andrew developed an instinct for building relationships with brands and companies that were going places.
Co-founding his own PR agency at the start of the century, Frank PR went on to become the standard by which all other PR agencies were judged.
Frank PR has been responsible for some of the most iconic public relations campaigns of the last two decades, working with clients like Nickelodeon, comparethemarket.com, Burger King, Coca-Cola and many other household and consumer brands to become the first PR agency to be crowned “Marketing's PR Agency of the Year” three times.
Simply put Andrew and fellow co-founder Graham Goodkind built Frank into a powerhouse PR agency, literally beating off clients with a stick because it was the agency to work with. In 2007, Frank was sold to the listed Australian marketing services group, Enero in a multi-million pound deal, and more recently taken private again in an MBO.
And then suddenly, after 20 years, Andrew announced he was stepping back and moving into a NED role at the agency, to take another path and find the time to explore new entrepreneurial opportunities.
One of the most fascinating men in PR opens up about his career, his creativity, mental health, working with A-list celebrities, his ambitions and plans as he now finds himself matching clients with agencies through his work at AAR and also advising agencies in the marketing services space on M&A strategies through his work with PCB Partners.
You don’t often get a chance to listen to this much great PR advice in one sitting as we cover a range of subjects including PR industry growth trends, the PR agencies Andrew admires the most, life with Lord Alan Sugar, great PR clients, the anatomy of an M&A deal, the joys of ruthless efficiency and what happens when influencer deals blow up in your face.

08 Sep 2023 | John Caswell: New Agency Model | 01:18:22
New technology such as AI, remote working services and team-working software allows independent premium talent to compete with big monolithic agencies.
Premium talent also knows that many of today’s creative and advertising agencies are responding to briefs that won’t fix the company’s problems.
John Caswell is premium talent.
A youthful veteran of the advertising industry, John now spends his time as a confidential creative advisor to big global corporations.
His experience means that he can address all sorts of unique business problems with a myriad of creative solutions, from advertising, brand and eCommerce, to artificial intelligence, content and digital marketing.
John understands that any company set up for success today is doomed to fail in the future. He knows that the winners are the companies that set themselves up for success in the next 5-10 years and he helps them get there.
This strategy includes advertising and creative agencies.
What does a visionary agency look like?
What does a visionary CMO need to succeed?
This is a fascinating interview with a man who provides solutions for tomorrow's leaders.

08 Sep 2023 | Keith Smith: Future Shock | 00:11:59
In the 1960's author Alvin Toffler began discussing the theory of Future Shock, a human condition brought about by the rapid change of multiple areas of life; business, domestic, familial and financial.
How prophetic his subsequent book 'Future Shock' turned out to be.
The 21st century is seeing a manifestation of all the things that Toffler predicted - and then some! Included in his predictions is the paralysis felt by decision-makers and a failure to move with the shift in process.
In this show, Keith Smith, host of The Fuel podcast, highlights some of the words of wisdom from previous guests to illustrate the point that while we may all be facing Future Shock, it's always possible to immunize yourself from it.

23 Sep 2023 | The Black Farmer: It's all about the Sizzle | 01:24:25
A real tale of inspiration, determination and motivation as I sit down with the leader, the brand ambassador, the genius behind The Black Farmer brand – Mr Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones MBE.
His story begins as part of the Windrush generation, coming from poor farming stock in Jamaica with his parents, as part of Britain’s shambolic attempt to rebuild the country after World War II.
Left to fend for themselves in a strange country, thousands of miles from home, with little or no support from the host nation, Wilfred’s parents settled in one of Birmingham’s poorest districts, but there was a glimmer of hope in the form of a small allotment, which Wilfred tended to help supplement his family’s food. He dreamed of becoming a farmer
His education was from the school of hard knocks. He battled racism, otherism, prejudice in business, climbing the ladder at the BBC and going on to become a marketing and broadcasting expert.
He achieved his original dream, going on to create The Black Farmer organic sausages, burgers, meatballs, bacon, chicken, free range eggs and cheese, which has now become a £10m creation.
He was awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire – a royal appointment), he’s written a book on overcoming fear for failure and most of all, he beat cancer. He’s now working on his latest project - a series of farm shops in deprived communities, bringing healthy natural artisanal brands to food deserts.
He’s an awesome man who champions the underdog.
And he’s here giving his unvarnished truth in this thoroughly entertaining, frank and forthright interview for grown ups.

We are on the cusp of a fundamental shift in the role that journalism plays in our lives. Terms like “Fake News” exist to downplay scandal, social media has unchained hate and negativity and allowed those with the most money to have biggest voice and to punch down on anyone who speaks out against them.
Public Relations stands at the vanguard of democracy right now, defending free speech, diversity, climate change and exposing hypocrisy and cruelty.

06 Apr 2025 | The Survival Guide for Noligarchs: How the wheels came off at Tesla | 01:27:36
Can the world’s richest man - Elon Musk, get away with treating the US government like a startup, throwing out Nazi salutes and behaving like the citizens of the world are under-performing employees in one of his companies, with no damage to the Tesla brand?
How much damage can one man cause for his shareholders and does he really care?
Rachel Konrad, Esben Pedersen and Craig Davis were all early employees in Musk’s fledgling Tesla business. They knew him in the early days, before most of us got to know him.
So has he always been the computer game end-of-level boss we
all know now?
Is there a charming side to Elon, or is he a 21st century Bond villain through and through?
How much hurt can moving fast and breaking politics cause to his companies and does he really care?
Three experts give their opinions on what he was like, how he won them over, and how he’s screwed us all over and made Tesla one of the most toxic brands in the world.
Most importantly – they suggest how Elon can get things back on track.
This is an incredibly revealing show that everyone who defends the man should listen to. It’s got all the facts you need to make a sound judgement on whether they were really Nazi salutes, whether he’s hell-bent on efficiency or self-enrichment and most importantly whether he has
ours or his own best interests at heart.
