17 Feb 202558. Cósmico! The Inside Story of the New York Cosmos' Trip to Cuba00:56:58

We're back!

Our fist episode of 2025 is an exclusive. For the first time, Steven Torres and Luis Yero sit down with Rory to tell the inside story of the New York Cosmos' trip to Cuba in 2015 and their roles in making this historic fixture come to fruition.

In December 2014, President Obama relaxed diplomatic relations with Cuba for the first time since the Cold War. Steven, our guest, jumped at the opportunity to send a football team there to compete in a friendly - the first time a soccer club from the US had visited Cuba since the 1970s.

From the first chaotic meeting in Jamaica to meeting Pelé, Steven and Luis orchestrated one of the most historic fixtures in US soccer history. This is the first time they've told their story.

11 Nov 202452. Belfast Celtic01:28:30

We're joined by Belfast Celtic Society board members Padraig Coyle, Frank Hennessey and Charles Tully Jr., son of Celtic legend Charles Patrick Tully, for a feature-length discussion on Belfast Celtic Football Club.

Belfast Celtic are arguably the most famous lost club from the island of Ireland. Existing during some of Ireland's most turbulent and violent periods of history, and being interwoven with the social, economic and political history of Belfast, Belfast Celtic were a club who represented their community and provided them a space to make their voices heard.

Tragically, they fell out of existence after leaving the IFA in 1949 following a controversial fight during a match.

In this episode, we discuss the power clubs like Belfast Celtic have in drawing people and their stories to them, the work that goes into preserving the memory of a football club and how people attach themselves to football clubs which they feel represented them in matters beyond football.

03 Jun 202435. RBC Roosendaal00:42:58

We're joined by Vincent Duitsch and Bas Brouwer to discuss one of The Netherlands' many football casualties - RBC Roosendaal.

Those of a certain vintage may remember RBC competing in the Eredivisie and in the final of the KNVB Cup against Ajax. Sadly, their collapse was greater than their rise.

A life-long RBC fan, Bas tells us why RBC were only ever an amateur-level club who punched above their weight, and we touch on how the much-maligned Dutch football pyramid plays into the demise of football clubs in the Netherlands.

04 Nov 202451. Edinburgh City00:56:27

We're joined by Edinburgh City season ticket holder and supporters' club member Ally Moncrieff to talk about the club's interesting off-field activity over the last few years which is akin to a BBC soap opera.

In 2019, the owners of Edinburgh City circulated a marketing document with the hashtag #FCEdinburgh mysteriously plastered all over it.

Fast forward to 2022 and the club confirmed it had changed their name to FC Edinburgh to attract 'European interest'.

Coupled with a disastrous new stadium, financial catastrophe and a points deduction, its certainly been a rollercoaster for Edinburgh City fans over the last few years. As the club lurched from one catastrophe to another, Ally tells us how this impacted supporter identity and feeling towards the club during one of the lowest points of their history.

It goes without saying that we hope KV Oostende can return sooner rather than later, and our thoughts go out to the fans and everyone associated with the club.

This week we're joined by Jim Thomson, the organiser of Scottish Football Programme & Memorabilia Fairs, for a chat about collecting and what memorabilia means to football fans.

We discuss the reasons why each fan has their 'holy grail' item, why we should view programmes as historic documents and the wider value of collectible memorabilia.

01 Jul 202439. One History: AEK Athens00:59:13

We're joined by Nikos and Thanos for a conversation about the history and heritage AEK Athens.

Founded by Greek migrants from Constantinople following the Greco-Turkish War, AEK Athens grew to become one of the most successful clubs in Greece. Their primary fan group, Original 21, are known for their anti-fascism and left-wing outlook, largely stemming from their heritage as a club founded by migrants who considered outsiders by both Turkish and Greek people.

This episode covers their history, the heritage and identity of the AEK Athens support, along with Nikos' and Thanos' memories of supporting the club.

Note: Due to connection problems, issues with sound quality were not flagged during the recording of this episode and only appeared afterward. We have tried to make it as easy on the ears as possible, but otherwise apologise for the poor quality of audio.

24 Feb 202559. Our Stories and Our Songs00:45:34

We're joined by John Williams, an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Leicester, to talk about the stories, myths and historic tales which make our game what it is today.

Storytelling plays a huge role within football, whether it's about the origin stories of the club your support or your grandad telling you about his favourite away day. As supporters, we create myths and idolise players in such a way that these stories take on a generational aspect.

John seeks to capture these sentiments in his latest book, which tells the history of football in Britain through a scrapbook-timeline of lesser-known stories and tales, each of which speak to the wider socio-economic and political landscapes of the contexts in which they exist.

29 Apr 202430. Eisern! The Story of Union Berlin01:17:15

We're is joined by English-German author and journalist Kit Holden to talk about one of Germany's most interesting clubs - 1. FC Union Berlin.

From their growth under the DDR to playing in the Champions League, Union Berlin have a phenomenal story and a unique fanbase. The circumstances of their existence, growth and identity make them one of the most interesting clubs to discuss from a heritage perspective, and as they become established in the Bundesliga, they continue to ride a fine balance between staying true to their roots and selling out completely.

We discuss the history of Union Berlin and the issues, events and conditions which led to their label as a 'rebel club', the identities of the fans and their role in the club and how Union traversed the oppression of East Germany to navigating modern capitalist football.

Kit is the author of 'Scheisse! We’re Going Up!', a book which documented the rise of Union Berlin and the crossroads they found themselves at at the time of writing. He has covered football for Der Tagesspiegel and AFP, and he has also written for The AthleticGuardian and Die Zeit. His second book 'Played in Germany' was released in June 2024.

Rory is joined by journalist and podcaster Sam Lewis to discuss the maelstrom of issues surrounding the 'first' Matildas team, a recent controversy which has reshaped Women's football in Australia.

Sam published an article at the beginning of July explaining the issues surrounding the 1975 side who played in what came to be recognised as the first Women's Asian Cup. Their recent recognition as the first Australian Women's National Team has been problematic and caused serious issues among the Matildas alumni.

Rory and Sam also discuss the difficulty in tracing historic records from Women's football and other common issues in studying one of football's most forgotten areas of history.

06 May 202431. The US Open Cup01:07:09

We're joined by Monterey Bay FC coach and aspiring football analyst Elian Corona to discuss The US Open Cup, one of the most loved tournaments in US Soccer.

Elian tells the history of the cup and the early teams who would dominate the trophy, before we discuss the recent issues the US Open Cup has had with scheduling, the MLS pulling out of supporting the tournament, and why preserving this inclusive piece of US Soccer history is essential to ensuring the longevity and continued participation of clubs in the tournament.

This episode offers a great insight into Grassroots Soccer vs the Capitalist Soccer Machine!
