An eight month pregnant teenager and her boyfriend post an ad on Craigslist, hoping to trade sex for cash. A user named “Mike's Hard” reaches out, and they make plans to meet at a local park. The couple leave their apartment and drive to the park, but they never return home. Four days later, the boyfriend is found decapitated in the park, near his abandoned car. The pregnant girlfriend is nowhere to be found. Investigators track down Mike's Hard, but they’re too late - he’s already taken the girlfriend's life, along with his own. But that’s not where this story ends - once investigators step inside Mike's Hard’s house, they discover a scene ripped straight out of a horror movie. On August 18, 2020, a 44 year old mother of two goes missing from Crawfordsville, Indiana, after a heated argument with her husband. Two days later, when she hasn’t returned home, her husband reports her disappearance. The same day, a sickening discovery is made just outside town, but the mystery only deepens. If the victim met her killer after leaving her home, law enforcement is in a race against the clock to find the person responsible before they strike again. But when the real killer is identified, and the motive for the murder is revealed, it’s as disturbing as it is incomprehensible. Late at night on Saturday, February 8th of 2020, 57-year-old Steve Ray Fason meets 22-year-old Sandra Marie Rappold for a discussion at his home in Bigelow, Arkansas. For weeks, Sandra has been hounding Steve by texting him, calling him, and showing up at his house uninvited. Sandra is convinced that Steve has committed crimes he had been acquitted of years ago. Finally, Steve decides to give Sandra what she wants: a conversation. The next day, Steve’s lifeless body is discovered at a neighboring business’s dumping grounds. Someone has stabbed Steve to death and burned his house down to destroy the evidence. When an anonymous tipster tells the authorities that Sandra is the culprit, Sandra immediately confesses to everything. Two months later, a second perpetrator is arrested. But, to this day, Steve’s family believes that more people were involved in Steve’s death. In episode 261, Jac and Alexis untangle the intimate relationships, alleged shady business dealings, and potential corruption surrounding the murder of Steve Fason.

On May 1st of 2010, 23-year-old Shannan Gilbert gets into a black SUV with her hired driver and de facto security guard, Michael Pak. Shannan and Michael travel from New York City’s Manhattan to a wealthy gated community on Long Island known as Oak Beach. Shannan, a sex worker, enters the home of her client, Joseph Brewer. Ever since she was a little girl, Maureen L. Brainard-Barnes had a generous heart. From stray kittens to down-on-their-luck friends, Maureen was happy to share her money, living space, and more with those in need—often leaving herself with little. Born and raised in the southeast corner of Connecticut, Maureen ended her academic career at age 16 when she realized she was pregnant with her first child. With no high school diploma, Maureen set her sights on becoming a model. In 2004, Maureen posted her photos on a supposed “modeling” website and, inadvertently, began her journey into sex work. By July of 2007, Maureen only did sex work part-time to make ends meet when her notorious generosity created financial hardship. In this episode, Jac and Alexis break down how the threat of eviction forced Maureen back into sex work and left her vulnerable to the still-at-large Long Island Serial Killer.

How do we stop these perpetrators, and how can we avoid getting into relationships with them? The short answer is--We can’t. What we can do is educate ourselves in what behaviors to look out for, which is exactly the purpose of today’s episode. On July 31, 2020, concerned neighbors contact authorities after not seeing their 73 year old neighbor since mid-April. Mail is piling up, her yard is no longer meticulously maintained, and she’s not answering phone calls or texts. Authorities conduct a welfare check, and find nothing amiss. 19 days later, they’re contacted by the 73 year old woman’s bank - someone has been illegally accessing her accounts. By August 31, authorities finally have enough evidence to enter the woman’s home, but what they found inside was enough to creep out even the most seasoned detectives. On November 29, 1996, two young men in Farmington, New Mexico, are murdered and mutliated inside a downtown business known as The Eclectic. At first it seems like a robbery gone wrong, but investigators soon deduce it’s more serious. However, despite the brutal nature of the crime, law enforcement is unable to pin down a suspect, and the city is on edge. It wouldn’t be until 4 years later, in December 2000, that investigators would apprehend the killers. Tragically, by this stage, one of the men had killed at least two more people, both from the Navajo nation, and was facing two additional trials. In episode 218, Jac and Alexis detail the frightening case of Robert Fry, a disturbed offender who over several years terrorised the northwest of New Mexico.

In a local river, a vehicle is submerged, the driver having lost control after leaving a nearby parking lot. Sadly, it’s too late for the 37 year old man, who drowns at the scene. On April 10th, 2001, actress 26-year-old Rebeca Peña works on the film Muhammad Ali in Miami, Florida. Late that night, Rebeca leaves the set and drives to her Miramar apartment. No one ever sees her again. Six days later, fishermen find a suitcase floating in a Miami canal with Rebeca’s body inside. The police investigation reveals that Rebeca’s ex-boyfriend and the father of her child, 26-year-old Berkley Calvin Curtis Jr., may have been involved in Rebeca’s death. For years, Rebeca accused Berkley of physical and mental abuse. But Berkley is quickly cleared when his new girlfriend provides him with an airtight alibi the same night Rebeca was murdered. Berkley’s name is cleared. He moves across the country, raises Rebeca’s daughter, and starts a new family. But, 20 years later, on December 14th, 2020, the police arrest now 46-year-old Berkley. On December 12, 2021, a 34 year old Kansas man is arrested on a misdemeanor count of property damage. As fate would have it, the man’s cellmate is a family friend who fronts him half the money to pay his bond. On the night of the 13th, the 34 year old man is released from jail. Less than three hours later, his body is found in the back of a truck - he’d been brutally murdered.
