And as soon as we start to learn some new things and try to implement them, we find ourselves sort of falling into some imposter syndrome or finding ourselves feeling uncertain about the path that we're on.

21 Apr 2022Building Confident Leaders and Healthy Teams with Todd Long00:28:05

Well, that was a fun conversation with Todd Long.

And one of the biggest takeaways for me from this conversation is that it's such an interesting idea to think about the fact that the vision doesn't have to come just from the leader. We can have these conversations that develop our vision.

Vision can come from everywhere in the organization. We can throw out drafts and we can get feedback or we can engage people in a preliminary conversation about the vision. We don't have to decide on our own.

I hope that you have some really interesting vision conversations as you include the people in your organization.

03 Feb 2022Leading Disruption with Sam Nguyen & Hunter Smith00:40:11

So it was interesting to talk to Sam and Hunter about disruption. I'm fascinated. I like inviting people to my show because I love that leadership skills translate as they go across, you know, different kinds of work.

They work in our home lives. So the thing that I noticed is, you know, a clear vision is still a good leadership skill. Best practices are still a good leadership style, and then bravery.

We talked about getting arrested, putting your body on the line in this one. And I think both those things, not the getting arrested part in leadership, I hope for business. But I think that we put our bodies on the line when we have to give up going to the gym for our work or we aren't able to do as much self-care as we need. We're putting ourselves on the line day in and day out in leadership.

I want to give you an assignment this week. I want you to think about what you want to disrupt in your world. And I want to challenge you to go experiment with disruption.

27 Jan 2022Helping Remote Communication Suck Less with Josh Little00:22:28

Well, that was fun. And I love the idea of Volley as on-demand communication. It fits in line with the Toyota Kata stuff around just in time. And I love all of that.

I think it's iterative. So you can have more iteration of exactly what you need to remove bottlenecks and to do it right at the last second. Or you know to repeat the questions often enough to remove your bottlenecks one after the other. Which is like speeding up productivity. So I love that.

I want to invite you to download a copy of my book at digitalbook.experimentalleader.com. I also want to tell you that it offers an opportunity to buy a workbook where you can chart your progress with that book. I wrote that book, and it took me seven years to write it.

I like it when people get a chance to take their learning and to have a place to put that learning. And to keep that learning. There are additional questions there.

I always dreamed of having that book be like dog eared and tired, and the pages were marked and highlighted. And the feedback I often get when people finish it is "Oh, my gosh! I need to go back and read again."

It's a pretty rich book and has a lot of helpful tips to help you lead a team. And so I'd love to hear from you. If you buy the book and you have feedback. I have a few feedback loops around how people experience the book live, and I'd love to hear that.

Well, I challenge you to think about how you change the way you communicate with your team in any way you can think of.

08 May 2020Community Shared Agriculture: Achieving Food Sovereignty In Crisis Times With Alvaro Venturelli Luchsinger00:22:58

It is the people in the food supply chain that are really the unsung heroes who keep us going as we wait out the COVID-19 crisis in isolation. With community shared agriculture, people can assure themselves of food sovereignty by relying on locally-farmed produce as border closures make it hard to secure food from big, cross-country suppliers. Alvaro Venturelli Luchsinger joins Melanie Parish to talk about how Plan B Organic Farms manages to support its community of 750 families as the current crisis makes it hard for consumers to procure food conventionally. Alvaro’s story is a touching narrative of a person who genuinely cares for his community and uses his abilities and resources to be proactive in the midst of crisis. Make sure to stick to the end and hear about Alvaro’s favorite vegetable!

09 Dec 2021Designing New Workplace Experiments with Melissa Boggs00:33:30

I love Melissa's spirit. I love that she talked about experimenting. And you know, of course, that's near and dear to my heart. And the thing that I loved about it so much is that there was a clear intention behind it. We knew what we wanted to change. We wanted to change the way the hiring process felt in both directions. She also wanted to have better outcomes. And as somebody who does the hiring, I see how observing the behavior is better than hearing about the behavior.

And so trying this experiment, and then trying it multiple times. And then I love that she collected feedback both internally and in tech. Also, from the candidates, and got feedback on the process.

Please think about where you can experiment around processes that don't feel good—or around processes, hiring processes. How can you change your hiring processes in ways? How can you experiment to get better outcomes, especially right now, when things are so competitive?

It's worth the effort to plan new processes right now because the stakes are so high. It's so competitive. And innovation is super attractive to the kind of candidates you want to attract. So, my challenge to you is to figure out where you can experiment.

20 Jan 2022Addressing Bias and Incivility in the Workplace with Robin Rosenberg00:25:37

It was just fascinating getting to talk with Dr. Robin Rosenberg.

And I loved all of the talks about onboarding and how you think about the way that you approach conversations from a leadership perspective.

And also how you see the conversations for the people on teams who are welcoming new team members. How do you invite them to be curious? How do you invite them to have today be a new day? To think about the feedback loops that they're setting up with people.

And there's a whole chapter in my book about feedback loops, you might really enjoy that.

So I really encourage you if you're bringing new people onto your team, think about what your dream is for them. Think about how you best foster that dream and how you create a new day for them and for you as you welcome new team members.

29 Apr 2021How To Transition Into The Food Takeout Service With John Forcier And Jerrett Young, Part 200:29:32

Pivots are breeding grounds for experimentation. As they shifted from the traditional restaurant paradigm to food takeout service, John Forcier and Jerrett Young of Equal Parts found themselves becoming dishwashers, delivery drivers, and prep cooks at various times. This is on top of the Gemba walks that they are already making so that they can really see what needs to be done around the kitchen. In this second part of their interview with Melanie Parish, John and Jerrett share how this experience of experimentation has given them a fresh eye for how work was done in the restaurant and find ways to optimize processes and offers. They also share how they have been using the concepts from Melanie’s book, The Experimental Leader, which was given to them by Melanie herself during the height of the pandemic.

09 Jun 2022Experimenting with Retrospective with Paul Reed00:45:15

Well, it's been a joy hanging out with Paul Reed, as always. Thank you so much. I loved having him on the show. It was wonderful.

Well, that was so much fun. And I think it's very important to look at both retrospectives.

And think of that socio-technical complexity and how it intersects with the Gemba Walk. It's not my concept. I referenced it in The Experiment Leader book.

29 Oct 2022The Power of Telling Your Story Through Memoir with Anne Bokma00:36:14

It's been so fun to be here with you today.

And oh my goodness, Anne Bokma is just such an experimenter in her soul. So it's fun to talk to her about how she approached her book.

You know, it reminds me of being in a workshop at the University of Michigan with Mike Rother, the author of Toyota Kata. And he, you know, said if you want things to change, start changing something somewhere.

So if there's something in your life you want to have to be different, start doing some things. Start changing something. Start experimenting somewhere.

So my challenge is to find a place you aren't so satisfied with and pick a place to experiment. It doesn't matter if it's exactly right.

Do a short experiment, maybe a week and pick something and start trying something new.

08 Apr 2022Using Academic Theory and Applying it to the Corporate Setting to Achieve Business Results with Steve Yacovelli00:30:55

It was just great talking to Steve Yacovelli.

I love this idea of feedback being a gift. I think it is a great gift to have access to information. Often as leaders, we're afraid of information if it doesn't align with what we believe.

And so I encourage you, as you get information, to see it as information to be curious about what you knew already. What you didn't know and not to leap to an immediate.

And then buy yourself time. You know, anytime you're getting feedback, that's hard to take. Just give yourself a minute to say, "Hey, let me think about that for a little while. Get back to you."

It's always okay to ask for more time. It's great any time you meet with a manager and they say something to you that you are like at the moment. Just train yourself to ask for more time. It's a great leadership skill.

17 Mar 2022Experimenting with Being All of Who You Are as a Leader with Bryna Haynes00:37:17

Well, it was fantastic to talk to Bryna Haynes about the idea of thought leadership.

The idea is that you can put your ideas out into the world as something substantial. And I think this is such interesting for people. It's one of the bases of how I work with leaders.

Coaching is to find out how they want to impact the world and what they uniquely offer to their profession. So it isn't just about being good at your job. That's like sort of the fair value exchange for your job.

It isn't about being outstanding at your job. It's about becoming an expert and a thought leader contributor in your field.

And if you have that orientation, I love that she talks about this. That orientation is so powerful for career development.

So I'd love for you to think about this week. I'd love for you to think about your career. Where are you on that journey from being good at something to being an expert and then being a thought leader in your field? Have an honest conversation in your mind about that for yourself. Figure out where you are and where you'd like to be with that.

20 Dec 2021Highly Sensitive Leading with Heather Dominick00:15:42

So I loved talking with Heather Dominick today. It was such an interesting conversation.

And what I noticed is that all of the things that Heather's suggested, sort of acceptance, and all of this is a part of improving feedback loops. We don't want people to be overwhelmed because we want them to take the information. We want them to be able to share information.

So if we look at the experimental leader, sort of that's the principle. It's improving these feedback loops if people aren't reactive and they can respond in those ways.

I love the idea that radical acceptance of so many things can change the way that we do in our work as leaders. I have a challenge for you. And that is for the next couple of weeks. I want you to look at where you can use radical acceptance of uncertainty in the way you lead.

12 Nov 2020Triple Bottom Line: The Place Of Compassion In Business With Dr. Bruno Cignacco00:19:33

Most of us have grown up with the idea that business should always be about the bottomline – profits, revenue, growth – but there is a rising trend of redefining that bottomline to include compassion, empathy, support, care and camaraderie. International business consultant, international speaker, lecturer, and best-selling author, Dr. Bruno Cignacco elevates this line of thinking into a full-blown business philosophy with his latest book, The Art of Compassionate Business. Joining Melanie Parish in this episode, he explains what compassion means in business and why we need to shift our attention to striking a balance between the quantitative and qualitative aspects of business. As Albert Einstein once said, “Not everything that can be counted counts. Not everything that counts can be counted.” This is the long version of that.

16 Dec 2022Making Decisions Based on Measured Results with Fred Fowler00:36:39

Well, it was super fun talking to Fred Fowler about experimenting. And I love that.

He said anytime you try something new; you're experimenting. I believe this wholeheartedly.

And I think one of the things I want to challenge you or you need to do is, if you are doing something new, think of it as an experiment number one or two.

Think about how long you will do the experiment and how you will know whether you should keep doing it.

So, how will you collect data? How will you measure what you're doing? So that you know whether or not it works.

So, make sure you've got that measurement in place before you start so that you know whether or not you're trying.

What you're doing for the first time is a good thing to do or not a good thing to do as you try it.

15 Sep 2022Exploring Positive Intelligence with Kimberly Wiefling00:34:06

It was such a joy to be here with Kimberly Wiefling. She's such a clear leader in her field. I love how she brings in evidence-based models for leadership.

And it's so interesting how she talks about feedback loops, which we discussed in the experimental leader. How do you learn about yourself as a leader? How do you take in information and learn? And then how do you figure out how it's impacting others because leadership is. So it's a circle; you're learning and leading or influencing others with your leadership.

So you also want to hear from them about how you're doing. So ask, Hey, I've been inquisitive. I've been trying to say this in meetings. How's that landing for you? So ask specific questions. Don't ask broad like, hey, how do you think I'm doing in my leadership?

Leadership can be a little lonely. And so, New Leaders often want way more feedback than they naturally get. One thing I hear from new leaders is that nobody tells me anything. It's like they don't get the feedback they're used to getting from having a boss at a lower level in an organization.

So part of learning to be a good leader is learning to quiet that voice in yourself. But on a systematic level, you can ask for feedback. So you don't want to overtax your people by asking for feedback too often, it makes you seem needy, and you can regularly ask for feedback. And over time, learn about your leadership.

So you don't want them to have you don't want to have been trying to get your ego massaged from feedback. You want to be learning about what you can do better.

Burnout is a real risk for people and burnout can last a really long time. And I think many people I talked to, don't take their vacations because they're waiting. There's some real function to those vacations. And I also think that one of the things that you can do when you think about self-care, you want to kind of dig deep for yourself, you want to look for ways that you can step back and pause. And that's sort of the taking time away from work, then you also want to look for a variety of things that actually rejuvenate you. Anything you do for self-care is a quiet investment. And it makes me think about how we experiment as leaders with ourselves, with our thoughts giving ourselves a break but trying something new. The next time learning to repattern is an experimental process.

These objects exemplify how you are now and other objects that illustrate how you want to be because those are touchstones for evaluating the change, shift, target condition, or desired end state that you want to achieve as a leader. I feel like we're talking about who we are from the inside out as leaders. Not so much what we show, but what do we look at inside ourselves? What are our abandoned dreams? 24 Jun 2021How to Pick your Leadership Icons00:05:07

It's super important to think about choosing icons, who are really good at leadership, I think we go down a rabbit hole sometimes, and we think people who are really dominant and tell everybody what to do, or someone who's really charismatic, that those people are exemplifying leadership, I think they're actually just exemplifying their personality. I think true leadership can be learned. And it's a skill, it's something that we practice. And so, if we choose to emulate leaders who have practiced that skill, who have taken on knowledge, who show the skills of leadership, then we're able to start to pick up those skills and improve our own leadership over time.

27 May 2021How Staying Present And Being Self-Aware Help You Become A Great Leader With Shahmeen Sadiq00:43:42

We often rush to take action and do something, but when was the last time you allowed things to slow down a bit? Shahmeen Sadiq, an executive coach, and founder of Anjali Leadership, joins Melanie Parish, to share what it is about staying present and being self-aware that help mold a true leader. Sharing her insights on some social issues, Shahmeen points out that people wanted to move things quickly and help out when all she wanted was to sit a little longer. She tells Melanie about Power Pause, a space she created where people can come, get centered, tune inward, and see what emerges. It’s the beauty of staying present and being aware of themselves that will allow them to deal with an unexpected crisis, difficult people, and events. This is the same with grooming leaders as Shahmeen says, boils down to staying grounded and helping people not be invisible by starting authentic conversations and not just the leader trying to make things better.

10 Mar 2023Helping Managers to Lead Better with Lori Michele Leavitt00:17:15

It was great to be here today with Lori Michele Leavitt.

And to talk about leadership. It's it was amusing to talk about how managers can lead better.

I am left thinking about we manage work and lead people. I think that's such a powerful statement.

I also think it's essential for us to continue to think about what we measure in the work that we do, how we plan the work that we do, and how we collect data to see what results we're having as we do that work.

10 Mar 2022Achieve Excellence by Doing Ordinary Things Extraordinarily Well with Dave McKeown00:26:43

Well, it was great to talk to Dave today.

And I love that he was talking about reactivity. And I have a gift for you. I have a cheat sheet that's about toxic leadership behaviors. You might find them in yourself. You might find them in others. You can get that at reactivecheatsheet.experimentalleader.com. I'm proud of this. And I think it's a really helpful way to just think about how you work with others. We are always doing that. And it's important to figure it out.

I was struck today with this idea of a timeline. And I think it's so important for us to adjust our timelines to fit the situation. If you think about what COVID has done to all of us collectively, it has shortened our timeline, everything became an emergency. And that's burned out our adrenals. It made us tired. It gives us less capacity.

The thing you can do for yourself as you're coming out of it if you want to excel in leadership is to start just leaving space to consider the timeline a year from now two years from now three years from now, maybe five years from now. Not because you can put a plan in place. But because you can put a plan in place that includes that timeline. You may still have the reactive things that are going on in your organization that you have to respond to quickly. That's fine.

Start to leave space to dream about the future. My challenge to you this week is what's your dream for three years from now? And what do you need to do today for that dream to be possible?

26 Aug 2021Using The 5 Senses To Foster Creativity00:05:14

Your job as a leader is to foster creativity. There are so many ways that you can do it. Think about fostering creativity as to how to ask creative questions, and how people tap into that creativity. Those are some really good starts for how you can impact your environment in a positive way to create a creative flow.

Giving space for creativity can also be really important. So my challenge to you is to think about the five senses and think about space and not space. Where do you want to have an impact? Where do you want to remove impact as you foster creativity and innovation in your organization?

09 Sep 2021Values Are The Filter Thru Which The Vision Is Executed By The Mission00:04:47

We spend so much time creating our vision and our mission for our organizations. And that's all great because we have to do that as leaders.

I think of values as the filter that we put those things through because they're really like the spice, and the flavor and the feel of how you're going to do things as a leader.

Everything we do gets filtered through those lenses to make sure that we're meeting the vision and the mission of the company. With that flavor of the values, it's how it feels to do the work itself.

24 Sep 2021Running Yourself Ragged00:07:10

What happens to you as a leader when you've been working hard? Trying to be the best that you can be. And for a while, it might feel good. Suddenly, there's a couple of things that happened. You hit a bump, but you keep coming back at that same pace that was super fulfilling. Then you start to feel some signs of burnout. You feel like you're running yourself ragged.

Everybody goes through this. It also probably needs your attention to come out of it. So what do you do if you notice that you're running ragged?

28 Apr 20222nd Anniversary Episode with Marita Fridjhon: What Does Systems Inspired Leadership Bring To Us Today? And What Has Changed Since Our Last Interview?00:35:53

Well, it is so fun to talk with Marita Fridjhon.

She is masterful at systems and what I would call feedback loops.

And I love this idea of systems-inspired leadership. The idea that we don't have to lead alone is much a part of how I think about leadership.

I want to challenge your thinking. Think about where you try to go it alone and have to be smart?

I want to bust you on that. I want you to think about how you can bring others in when you feel like you have to figure it out all by yourself and where others could help you do it better?

19 Nov 2021Experimenting with Copywriting with Nicki Krawczyk00:32:07

It was just such a compelling interview. Nicki, she's so interesting. I'm left pondering this idea of whether or not leaders can have bad days. I think one of the things that we bring to organizations as leaders is that bright-eyed bushy-tailed energy not all the time and not in a cloying way, and not in a fake way.

There's some authenticity around it all but I do think being able to walk past some of the bullshit and just be in the possible. Like the positive and the possible for our staff is something that we can do powerfully as leaders.

I'm curious as to where you think you cross that line. Where your authenticity steps a little too much into whining. Or where you do a great job of holding that positivity of being solutions-oriented, of walking past the trouble, and sort of holding a beacon for your staff.
